FAMILY STORY For my children I like to lead by example. We compete over our GPAs, and they tell me it is not fair because I am only taking one class but I tell them that it is fair because I have a full-time job. ANA MENDOZA, HABITAT HOMEOWNER SINCE 2002

8

HabitatVailValley.org

A FOUNDATION FOR A BETTER FUTURE Ana became a Habitat homeowner 14 years ago when her son Nicolas was 5 and her daughter Nicole was 4. When she first moved into her Habitat home, Ana was working at Walmart. Building her own home gave her the confidence to search for better jobs. For the past eight years, Ana has been working as an Early Head Start home visitor for Eagle County, serving low-income, at-risk families with children under 3 years old, to better prepare them for school. Ana’s oldest two children graduated from Eagle Valley High School (Nicolas in 2015 and Nicole in 2016) and each were named Guardian Scholars and awarded four-year scholarships to attend Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.

LAND PURCHASE LAND SECURED TO BUILD THROUGH 2018 After months of negotiations, Habitat Vail Valley closed on a .704 acre parcel of land on December 8, 2015. It will allow the organization to build 12 additional homes (six duplexes) in the Stratton Flats neighborhood in Gypsum. The land was purchased from Stratton Flats Homes LLC and provides Habitat with the property it needs to build homes through 2018.

The importance of this land acquisition cannot be overstated in terms of its impact on our community. 12 more families will achieve homeownership in our resort community where housing costs are a significant challenge. KRISTIN KENNEY WILLIAMS, VAIL RESORTS

20 YEARS! 1995-2015 The concept that eventually grew into Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley was born at a Minturn pizza restaurant in 1995 when locals Michael Wasmer and Ron and Patti Brave had dinner with Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat International. Fuller convinced them to start a local chapter, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2015.

EL SALVADOR Maybe we are crazy, but we all actually love the work, the manual labor it takes to make it all happen. Even with all of the dirt, sweat, bug bites and backaches, it’s great to meet the Habitat family and their neighbors.
