The rst semester of the undergraduate studio sequence introduces architecture as a design inquiry comprised of iterative experimentation. Through a series of design exercises and focused discussions, the studio explores the generation and manipulation of space, form, surface, and ground. Techniques of representation will also be scrutinized as modes of production, assessment, and dissemination. A goal of the studio is to help the student develop an informed design process. Speculation and experimentation are encouraged in the studio; thinking and making are to be understood as simultaneous endeavors. The studio consists of four major exercises (each divided into a series of interconnected parts ranging in duration from one day to ve days) and a nal project. Each exercise is comprised of work completed by the student and subsequent assessment by faculty in open studio reviews. All studio exercises will require self-initiative in their architectural inquiry: thoroughly exploring assigned media and methods (including drawing, diagramming, and modeling) is essential to developing a rich design process.

PROJECT 1 LINE SURFACE VOLUME

Operation 1: Contrast create contrast by cutting large and small blocks, and then making the corners of most of the space touch each other but not create overlap. In this case, the space will create tension with each other. Also, some small interactions between the spaces create a special moments which may bring new possibilities to the cube. Operation 2: Continuity In this model, want to always maintain a wave-like continuity, and then through the different widths to produce different sizes of space; therefore this space is becoming more interesting. Also, from different angles we have different access to the inner spaces. created my grid by connecting the surrounding façades. My design was gradually derived upwards and outwards from the underground of my model. Then the ow going outward interacted with the grid, leading into my neighbourhoods’ models.
