It is so hard to believe that another summer is winding down and that, in just a very short period of time, local schools and Colleges will get started on another exciting year. The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce partners with many other local organizations to keep its membership informed about how local education and training providers are assisting businesses in addressing the workforce challenges many of you are facing. This month alone, the Chamber was involved with the Shenandoah Valley Partnership’s Annual Meeting, the local State Delegates’ annual Valley Business Summit, the Valley Business Keynote, and the annual Presidential Address on August 12. The networking opportunities that your Chamber provides are invaluable in helping you connect with both supply chain partners and workforce development experts.

Our ongoing Business After Hours and Business Before Breakfast events are another great opportunity to interact with local business entrepreneurs and leaders. I enjoyed attending the July 11th ribbon cutting event at Honey Baked Ham in Harrisonburg, where Chamber members Wes and Cindy Dove unveiled their informative book called “Discover your Team’s Potential: Proven Principles to Help Engage Your Team and Improve Performance.” In addition, the Reserve at Stone Port hosted a wonderful Business After Hours event in mid July.

Both of the leadership development programs sponsored by the Chamber recently concluded another successful year. Graduates of both the BOLD and Leadership Harrisonburg-Rockingham (LHR) programs learn so much from their experiences and often employ what they learned by becoming more involved on local community boards or in other forms of volunteer experiences. This coming year will be the fortieth year for the Chamber’s LHR program and the new class is very excited to get the year started! We are always looking for active Chamber members with experience and expertise to help the leadership planning teams provide wonderful opportunities for participants, so if you want to serve on one of those committees please contact us!

Another great way to become more active in the Chamber is to participate on one of our Regional and Business Councils. The Chamber coordinates a Diversity Business Council, the Shenandoah Women’s Alliance, the Aging in Place Council, and several regional business councils that talk about important issues in their local communities. The Chamber also has a Public Policy Committee, a Hospitality Committee, and a Military Affairs Committee so there is a place for every Chamber member to become more active!

Finally, planning is now underway for the very popular CONNECTIONS 2019 event to be held on October 3rd at the James Madison University Festival Center. Economic prosperity will be the focus of the event, with Virginia Business Publisher Bernie Niemeier, Virginia Economic Development Partnership President Stephen Moret, and Virginia Chamber of Commerce President Barry Duval each serving on a powerhouse panel looking toward the future where the state and Valley economies are heading.

As you can tell, a lot of things happen through your local Chamber of Commerce and we are delighted that you are a member! ‘Looking behind,' ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit Looking back is useful in understanding the past, good and bad, which helps us understand exactly where we are today and how we got there. Looking ahead is much trickier but it helps to shape our thoughts and plans in the present to prepare for the future.

Everyone has heard how change has accelerated over the past few years, and change is unavoidable. While the last economic downturn is now ten years behind us, there are still many businesses looking back as they expand today, but maybe not as fast as they financially could because they can’t shake the feeling of ten years ago. And there are those who are content today and would be satisfied with the status quo, but they know the reality is that change is coming. Then there are those who embrace the thought of a new economy, even if the picture is a little cloudy looking beyond the foreseeable future.

As I write this article, I have just returned from the BRCC ribbon cutting for the new BioSciences building. With BRCC and JMU planning for the future of STEM jobs, the community was well positioned when Rockingham County officials became aware of the opportunity for Merck’s new expansion and they jumped on board. There are plenty of business examples of companies and communities in the right position at the right time to take advantage of and seize an opportunity. There are plenty of examples with the opposite storyline. As a business or an association, with the speed of business changing with technology, population trends, ever evolving consumer habits, etc., you can’t afford to stay in the same place for too long and stay relevant. You need to look over the horizon, if possible.

This year’s Connections2019 is all about looking ahead, through the lens of the present and with an eye to the future.

Looking ahead a great theme for such a gathering of business and community leaders, with such a stellar line-up. We have three people with unique perspective on business in Virginia and the Valley, willing to share their observations with us. We have two of the most important people in local government ready to share facts and figures and their views on where we are today and where we are heading in the future. And we are lining up three special sessions that should interest everyone, again with an eye to the future. We will cap off the afternoon with an interactive survey, getting member and community opinion, including the next stage in the Chamber’s evolution.

Always trying to look ahead, the Chamber has a number of ongoing initiatives and programs that do just that. Two of my favorite programs are Leadership Harrisonburg-Rockingham (LHR), now in its 40th year, and Building Optimal Leaders by Design (BOLD), a recent addition in 2012. The premise of these programs is to provide leadership skill, community knowledge, and opportunity for people to become more engaged and to make a positive impact on our community, immediately and well into the future. Please check the list of new LHR and BOLD participants starting this month in this edition of The Advocate. The Business Smarts series is designed to provide information which helps member businesses and organizations prepare for long-term success. The Business After Hours events are for networking, but the intent is always to help members broaden their base of contacts so that somewhere down the road those relationships will help the individuals, companies and the community prosper.

These are just a few examples. The Chamber can help, but YOU need to be involved and engaged. Please put Connections2019 on your calendar, whether it is digital or paper. Like they say in the community development world, there is no standing still. If your community is not moving forward, you are falling behind. And this being an election year, followed by another one in 2020, the only thing that is certain is the uncertainty ahead. Connections2019 is being designed to help you move forward, so please take advantage of the opportunity.

Cultivating leadership is an important component in the continual betterment of our business community. With this in mind, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce offers two programs designed to promote leadership growth. With a 40 year history, Leadership Harrisonburg-Rockingham (LHR) has been a stepping stone for many leaders in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The program, held over a ten-month period, is a unique opportunity for participants to gain access to an extraordinary network of area leaders and get an up close and personal look at the inner workings, and often collaborative involvement of many area programs and offices. From public safety and local government to arts, culture and sustainability, the program provides a comprehensive and enlightening look at Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. LHR is designed to expose current and aspiring leaders to the many different aspects of our community, educating them about the community’s past, present and future, including our strengths and opportunities that will help us build a better tomorrow.

We had a great turn out for this year’s ValleyFest: Shenandoah Valley’s Beer and Wine Festival on May 25 on the slopes of Massanutten Resort. The musical line up on both stages was crowd pleasing! Pebble2Pearl had everyone up dancing by the end of the evening. There were over 32 craft vendors selling their goods. The beer, wine and cider vendors had a selection that was hard to beat. There was truly something for everyone’s taste buds between food and beverage.

We wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the army of volunteers who donated their time to help make this event a success! From planning stages to the clean up crew, every single volunteer made a difference. We are so fortunate to have such great partnerships and sponsors who make ValleyFest the premier event that it is: Massanutten Resort, Valley Honda, Blue Ridge Beverage, Blue Ridge Community College, Cargill, Pioneer Bank, The Reserve at Stone Port, Queen City Creative, Appeal Production, AT&T, Hammond Insurance Services, May Supply, iHeart Media, Harrisonburg Radio Group and WHSV TV3.

This year’s Valley Businesses Give Back Campaign was a success due to member participation including: Blue Ridge Insurance Services Inc., Care Advantage, Cargill, Harman Realty, Kawneer Company Inc., LD&B Insurance and Financial Services and LSC Communications. The goal this year was 35,000 meals but with the help of all the network partners, 79,000 meals was reached.

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce staff was lucky enough to be able to volunteer one afternoon to help pack food with Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce and Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce.
