A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed at around 08:30 hrs yesterday after slamming headlong into a utility pole in James Street, Albouystown. The victim, Ralph Stewart, of Castello Housing Scheme, had reportedly swerved to avoid crashing into a car when the accident occurred. Winners of the Guyana Prize for Literature 2012 alongside the President of Guyana, Donald Ramotar and representatives of the University of Guyana One of Guyana’s most proficient writers, Ruel Johnson, copped the Guyana Prize for Best Fiction at last night’s award ceremony for the Guyana Prize for Literature 2012 which was held at the Pegasus Hotel. Touted as one of the country’s best writers of the decade, Johnson won the award for the second time following his previous win in 2002 for his collection, “Ariadne and other stories”. The title for the best poetry award was shared between Dr. Ian Mc Donald and Cassia
Alphonso. Mosa Mathifa Telford was lauded for her thought-provoking play, “Sauda” and thereby won the award for Best Drama. Only one entry was shortlisted from among those in the First Book of Fiction category and Sasenarine Persaud was declared the winner of this group. Unfortunately, no work was considered suitable for a shortlist in the First Book of Poetry Category.
