Bartica's Siren Song: Luxury Marina Must Not Become a Smugglers' Port

Dear Editor, The vision recently announced by President Ali to transform Bartica into a world-class yachting and boating hub is an ambitious part of Guyana's economic diversification strategy. However, placing a luxury international marina a magnet for high-net-worth visitors and significant capital in

gateway town already struggling with social and security issues presents a dangerousparadox. Wi

comprehensive economic and security study, this initiative risks becoming a costly misadventure that e

problemsratherthansolving them.

The Paradox of ScarcityandWealth

Bartica's economy is currently defined by its role as a logistics hub for the mining industry, providing essential provisions, fuel, and equipment for gold and diamond extraction in the interior. Introducing a highspending luxury market will instantly create massive demand-side pressure on

these critical resources. The result is predictable: a sharp rise in the cost of living and operations, effectively creatingatwo-tieredpricing s y s t e m w h e r e t h e international clientele can outbid local miners and residents for basic goods, fuel, andproperty

This does not uplift the community; it threatens to price out the very people who form the foundation of Bartica'scurrenteconomy

Security: A Gateway forGoods,orGold?

Bartica's location at the confluence of major rivers makesitaprimaryentryand exit point, which, unfortunately, has always made it susceptible to smuggling and trafficking. Luxury yachts provide the perfect cover for these illicit activities.

Expensive, fast, and often enjoying relaxed international clearances, these vessels are ideal for transporting: Precious Metals and Stones: The ready availability of gold and diamonds from the interior createsaperfectopportunity for large-scale, low-risk smuggling straight from

Bartica's docks into the internationalsystem.

Contraband and

Narcotics: Conversely, the vesselscanbringinillegalor undeclaredhigh-valuegoods andnarcotics.

The lack of robust security infrastructure, as evidencedbygeneralborder and internal security concerns, means the town is ill-equipped to police this high-stakes maritime traffic. Without immediate, heavy investment in Customs, Immigration, and the Coast Guard, the marina will simply be laying the groundwork for a sophisticated cross-border crime syndicate, directly u

security

ACallforData-Driven Governance

P r e s i d e n t A l i ' s announcement, while forward-looking, appears disconnected from a public, comprehensive cost-benefit andriskanalysis.Successful integration of a high-value sector requires more than just a grand vision; it demands a clear, publicly vettedplanthataddresses:

1 Inflation Mitigation: Specific policies to prevent

cost-of-living spikes for long-termresidents.

2 Local Linkages: Mandates for luxury operators to invest in local skills training (e.g., marine maintenance, advanced hospitality) rather than just hiring for menial service jobs.

3 Security Overhaul:A detailed plan for a new, digitally-enabled, and internationally trained maritime security force stationed permanently in Bartica.

The proposed marina hasthepotentialtodiversify Bartica's economy and positionGuyanaasapremier tourism destination However, the government mustresisttheurgetobuilda playgroundfortherichatthe expense of its citizens' security and economic stability

The immediate priority m u s t b e t o h a l t construction until a definitive, public study is commissioned and presented, ensuring that thistransformativeproject serves the people of Barticafirstandforemost

Alfred Maycock dominated cricket in Essequibo

DearEditor,

Arguably the finest allround cricketer whose contribution to the beautiful game was remarkably digestible. His elegance and arrogance with the bat complimented his wily and awkward leg-spin with wizardryandawesomeness.

Igrewuplisteningtothe older folks and teammates who spoke glowingly of Alfred Maycock's brilliance andastoundingeffecthehad onthecricketfield.

His majestic 92 in a senior inter-county match against Demerara was a gem; unfortunately, he was run out as he stood tall and unflinching against the might of Colin Croft and othersonthatday

It remains a defining innings in the annals of heroics and bravery Maycock's contribution spanned almost three decades as a player, captain and subsequently as coach. Domestically, he was unstoppable representing GRB where he was employedandforotherlocal teams as well. Notwithstanding, his immense talent drew Essequibo on the map and with the late Courtney Gonsalves and Elbert Stephens, Lennox Alves, Fitz Garraway among other impressionable stalwarts paved the way for Essequibo's cricket to emerge from a position of stagnationtorecognition. APNUsays$150kcashgrantpossibleforcitizens

With an estimated 604,000 citizens qualifying by this month for the government promised cash grant, andatotalexpenditure of $90 6 billion, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has called on the PPP/C government to distributeatleast$150,000to citizens in time for the Christmasseason.

The APNU believes that the amount represents a manageablepercentageofthe total projected government revenues, which proves the feasibilityoftheproposal

Lead member in the National Assembly, Dr. Terrence Campbell said the president and his Cabinet have had several public discussions on one-off cash payments and other benefits tiedtoGuyana'soilwindfall

“President Irfaan Ali recently told Guyanese that “If you behave yourself, you getitthisyear,”languagethat is disrespectful, improper,

Dr Campbell reminded that last year, a cash grant of $100,000 was allocated to each citizen age 18 and over to provide financial relief amidst the rising economic challenges

With population growth projected as well and an increase in revenue, he believes it is imperative to reassess the grant amount in ordertobettermeettheneeds of citizens He reasoned that with current revenue trends which show, “mid-year revenues for 2025 show an increase to $4973 billion, a 447% rise from 2024 The government expects total revenues to reach $1,0245 billionin2025,anincreaseof 305%overthe$7846billion reported in 2024 Given the earlystartupoftheYellowtail FPSOandtheexpectedrisein oil production, this estimate maybeconservativelylow”

But Georgetown has an acute shortage of housing.Youcanworkinthe city, but unless you are wealthy or have the negotiatingskillsofaUnited Nations diplomat, you must commute from distances so far that you begin to experience spiritual detachment.

Which brings me to the grand plan to improve Georgetown.Reportssaythe President requested a study on the housing stock, which is promising, provided the plan is not to accelerate the current trend of converting everyremaininghomeintoa business. One hopes, desperately, that the intention is to stop the city from morphing entirely into a commercial maze. But yesterday’s rains reminded us that housing is only one of our municipal nightmares. The downpour made an absolute mockery of the proposal to concrete thecity’sdrains.

After moderate showers,

the water rose so fast that I briefly wondered if Noah was hiring carpenters. What Georgetown needs is not concrete drains but the radical idea of cleaning them, clearing the canals, and allowing water to flow somewhere other than our livingrooms.Basicdrainage is not a luxury; it’s the bare minimum expected of a city that wishes to remain above sealevel.

But is drainage a part of the really thorny question, that one that keeps young peopleawakeatnightishow they are supposed to afford rent in a city where rents behaveliketheyaretraining for the Olympics. And those who try to leave end up right back on TikTok, explaining to strangerswhythey’restillin Sophia while landlords cheerfully demand US$1,200 for an apartment where the bathroom door doesn’tcloseproperly.

Health of seniors

Note is taken of SN's editorialdatedDec02,2025 and captioned “Public figures and their health.” It is timely and has much value; but it may also be coincidental. Coincidental because I saw two recent snapshots ofVice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, and the firstthingthatstruckmewas thathedidn'tlookhimselfin the least. I hope he is well,

andnoonewillthinkthat,as Guyanese say, I am calling sickness on the man. For whatever it is worth, count me out of such nastiness. That's a role for others. Because no matter the differences between me and someone,Idonotandcannot allow myself to get to that state of malevolence Guyana already has too many of such malice-

minded individuals, who think nothing of rejoicing when a political figure (or others) that they detest is struckbyillness.

My two sightings of Dr. Jagdeo were when the president was having a fun time and inspiring his listenerstolaughteroverthe high priority that Guyanese place on a cash grant. As a quick aside, I condemn that

in no uncertain terms; there is nothing to laff about on a cash grant for those who need it the most. The other sighting was another social mediaclipwhereDr.Jagdeo seemed to be the center of attraction amid hearty celebrations and good cheer fromhisbosomcomrades,as though he just returned Return from where?

Reports are that he had missed two successive Thursday afternoon press conferences, which must be some record. He wasn't travelling. He couldn't be thatoccupied, sincePres.Ali is now shoving him aside and running more and more under his own steam, and answerable to no man. But in both posts, the vice president looked different: wan, atbest, andmanifesting that hollow-eyed, sunken cheeked,thousand-yardface and stare of someone who had just endured a bout of serious bodily assaults. He had that gaunt look of one whowentthroughawar, and is still feeling and showing the effects. Like I said, I hope he is in good health, and if he was ill that he is well on his way to getting backfullyandquicklyonhis feet. Bestwishes, friar

Generally speaking, in times of severe sickness, it takesarealmonstertohavea good time over news of that nature. Further, itcallsfora monster of exceptional depravity and barbarity to take such a development, and make a social media story out of it. Those are very sick individuals. The SN editorial had something to say about it, as it referred totheFirstLady Whatkind ofabottomfeeder, whatsort ofslimycreaturestraightout of the Galapagos Islands, finds something to thrill about in another person's strugglesorillness? Ittakes ararekind, indeed. Thereis a saying inAmerica (maybe even in Guyana) that I wouldn't wish certain things on my worst enemy My standard is that those who seemeaseitheranobstacle, oraproblem, arefreetodoas they please, and wish ill to theirheart'scontent. Bringit on down. But I hope that I neverfallsolow, astoreach that dead end, ever even thinkofreturningthefavor

Hate breeds hate Guyana has too much of both, without too much effort required to initiate, to retaliate. How can there everbehopeforthiscountry,

whether as One Guyana, or Minus One Guyana, or One Guyana Plus, when there is this thickness of venom in the blood that sickness is found delightful? How can this country aspire to and actually achieve any higher ground, when there are so many, whoaresohappytobe gambolingintheguttersand sewersofsocialmediatoget anupperhandoveroneheld as a blood enemy, and bring him or her down? In this country, itseemsthatthereis aspecialjoyinstickingitto political foes most of all. When sickness or reports of sicknessdonotbringoutthe bestinus, buttheworse, then Guyanese might as well close-up shop, call it a day here, and head for new pastures. Sickness must always be off-limits. Just like when there is death and timesofmourning, thereisa suspension of hostilities There is a time for fighting andquarreling;andthereisa timeforhealingandrising.

Sophia man gets life sentence for killing sleeping girlfriend

A 25-year-old man, who brutally killed his girlfriend in 2023, was on Friday sentenced to lifeimprisonment.

The ruling was handed down at the Demerara High Court by JusticePriscillaChandra-Hanif.

The accused, Linden

Benjamin of Sophia, pleaded guilty to stabbing 31-year-old Lisa George 25 times as she slept beside her two children. The attackoccurredonApril26,2023 atLot604CField,Sophia,where Georgelivedwithherchildren.

Benjamin pleaded guilty on September 16 and returned to courtforsentencingonFriday

During the sentencing, state prosecutors Darin Chan and Latifa Elliot outlined several aggravating factors, stressing the sheer brutality of the attack, particularly the twenty-five stab wounds delivered while the victim lay defenseless They noted that “a dangerous and deadly weapon was used in the commission of the offence, to wit, aknife.”

The prosecution highlighted Benjamin's betrayal of trust, the presence of George's young children during the killing, and the severe trauma inflicted on the family Chan also underscored the broader issue of intimate-

partner violence, stating, “Too frequently these incidents are happening; we have a duty to protectwomeninsociety.”

He urged the court to impose a life sentence, stressing that the exceptional nature of the case warranted the harshest penalty.

According to Chan, Benjamin showedabsolutelynoremorse.

“Your Honour, justice must speak loudly today It must reach every home, every community, and every man who believes that a woman's life is his to threaten, his to injure, or his to take,” he said. “This sentence must say to all men that the women of this country are entitled to safety, dignity, and life, and that the courts will protect that right withouthesitation.”

Benjamin's attorney, Buelah Williams, pleaded for a lesser sentence, noting the emotional impactonhismotherandarguing that one of the main purposes of imprisonment is offering an opportunity for betterment and rehabilitation.

However, in delivering her ruling, Justice Chandra-Hanif said she found it alarming that Benjamin showed no genuine remorse for his actions. After weighing both aggravating and mitigating circumstances, she

accepted the State's submissions and imposed a life sentence, with eligibilityforparoleonlyafter30 years, minus time already spent onremand.

“It was persistent and merciless. He should have walked away There is no remorse; he needs to be held accountable for his actions,” the judgestated.

Several family members of thedeceaseddeliveredemotional testimonies George's sister, Lauren George, said, “Lisa was my rock. She did not deserve to dielikethat.I hope he spends life inprison.”

Her teenage son, who witnessed the attack, told the court, “My mother was very loving and caring. I was in shock and fearful for my life. The incident keeps replaying in my head When it comes to Christmas and birthdays, there is always an empty space in my heart.”

Statements from George's parents were also read in court, expressing similar grief

Throughout the proceedings, family members wept openly as theyrelivedthepainfulevents.

Benjamin later addressed the court for the first time, offering a statement in which he claimed he

had been “taken advantage of.”

Showing no visible remorse, he said, “I wasn't a good citizen. I wouldn't disrespect her or her relatives. I used to be taken advantage of; I used to get beat. I never take anything to beat or hurther Iapologize.”

The prosecution's case outlined that on April 26, the nightofthekilling,Georgewasat home with Benjamin and her two children At some point, Benjamin demanded that she “open her phone,” to which she refused. She later went to bed with her children, and Benjamin joinedthemshortlyafter

“In the stillness of the early morning hours, sometime between 2:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., the convict armed himself with two knives… and launched a brutal and unprovoked attack upon the deceased while she lay asleep in her bed in a defenseless state,”thecourtheard.

Benjamin stabbed George 25 times across various parts of her body According to the prosecution, he then made no efforttogethelpandattemptedto leave the bedroom, but was stoppedbyGeorge'sfather,Colin George. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the capitaloffence.

APNU wants parliament, committees

convened for scrutiny of spending, planning

The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is calling on the government to quickly convene the next sitting of the national assembly to allow for proper scrutiny of the spending and the plans being implemented.

TAKE NOTICE that this Notice of Application is fixed for Directions Hearing on Tuesday the 13th day of January, 2026 at 9:00 am before the Honourable Justice Peter-Hugh in Court 7

IN DEFAULT of your filing a Application Relating to Child, an Answer and/or, Notice of Intention to Defend the Court may proceed in your absence and may make any Order it considers appropriate, including granting

Custody.

The Registry of the Family Division of the High Court is located at the Law Courts [Georgetown, Demerara]. The office is open to the public between 8:00am and 3:30 pm Mondays to Thursdays and 8:00 am to 2:30 pm on Fridays except on public holidays and on such other days as the Registry is closed. Dated the 24th day of October, 2025.

Mahipaul has also urged the “strengthening of parliamentary scrutiny, including prompt release of supporting costings and sensitivity analysis and…a public register of major projects and their procurement status to reduce uncertainty and corruption risk. In other words, put parliament and its various committees in place as the constitution dictates.”

Opposition MP and leader of Forward Movement Guyana (FMG), Amanza Walton-Desir, had also recently demanded the immediate reconvening of parliament and activation of key oversight committees, as the political deadlock over the swearing-in of new opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed drags on.

In a forceful social media statement on Sunday, Walton-Desir warned that the paralysis in the National Assembly is eroding the country’s credibility and putting citizens at risk. She also called for the Speaker Manzoor Nadir to call the meeting for the election of Mohamed, leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).

“I’m asking a serious question, how are we to be taken seriously when we have a parliament that will deliberately not meet to appoint a leader of the opposition?

How are we to be taken seriously when we are on the verge of such a shift geopolitically, and we do not have a foreign relations sectoral committee meeting so that we

can go and in a bipartisan manner, continue to help the people of Guyana to remain calm, because panic is not going to serve anybody,” she stated.

The opposition parliamentarian stressed that the refusal to convene committees jeopardises public safety. Walton-Desir said, “Do we understand why people take us for granted? Because we take ourselves for granted, and we take our safety for granted, and we take the affairs of this nation for granted. What is more sad for me is that there are Guyanese who chair that posture on, ‘oh yes, don’t convene no committee for them’ not understanding that they’re endangering and jeopardising themselves.”

Pres. Ali launches new Guyana...

From page 12 disasters, one of the first things that we try to get back up after natural disaster is communication and electricity, before roofs and homes and everything. And once those two things are back up, education is back up to the Digital School,” he elaborated. Further, he noted that the digital school is a gateway and hub for digital learning. Through the school, he noted that they hope to create high quality digital content, empower students with skills that match global standards, close the digital divide in education between coastline and hinterland, offering alternative pathways for learning, especially for those who cannot access traditional schooling easily. It will eventually support adult learners, out of school, youth and lifelong learners.

The school, he added, is not simply a response to the present, but rather it is an investment in the future and that it is a declaration of a country that knows where it

is going and refuses to be left behind. Importantly, he mentioned that the digital school will have a digital library with all of the textbooks students require for CSEC and every single examination. Meanwhile, in her remarks, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag said the school will introduce new avenues for learning, so that no child will fall behind because of distance, circumstance or pace.

“We all witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, how quickly the world can change and how fragile learning becomes when a system relies on a single mode of delivery. Students everywhere lost time they can never fully regain, and countries across the world are still grappling with the learning loss of that period. In Guyana, the Guyana Digital School is designed to guard against that vulnerability. It stands beside our classrooms as a resilient, flexible partner, giving teachers, parents and students, consistent support, even in times of uncertainty,” she informed.

Countries including Barbados, Belize, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis are already benefitting from the programme, which will continue to expand to Grades Seven through Nine by early 2026. Parag related that the Guyana Digital School is grounded in a holistic four quadrant approach that blends technology, content, engagement and hands on experience into one cohesive model of learning.

“It brings together interactive online classes led by trained educators, a rich library of on demand, digital resources, programmes that build wider skills beyond the curriculum, and practical activity-based projects that help students apply what they learn,” she remarked. Addressing the ceremony virtually, was Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley and Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell who both lauded the new initiative stating that the wider Caribbean students will benefit significantly from this innovative platform.

5th annual Energy Conference and Supply Chain...

From page 2 human capacity and capability that is needed to execute all of that,” he said.

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat in his address, noted that next year’s event will be the fifth year of the conference, even as Guyana remains a newcomer in the oil and gas industry. “The success of this energy conference is heavily hinged on the development and the success story of the development in the oil and gas sector. Because of what is taking place and the rate which it is taking place in the oil and gas sector we have seen tremendous success at these conferences,” he stated.

He underscored that the conference has become a major driver of sector development. Bharrat pointed out that Guyana is now recognised as one of the largest producers of hydrocarbons per capita globally, and has one of the most successful deep-water exploration wells. The minister added that growth in the sector has been matched by efforts to build a robust management framework, resulting in

Guyana being rated among the best-managed new oil-producing countries. With total oil production now surpassing 900,000 barrels per day across four developments in the Stabroek Block namely Liza 1, Liza 2, Payara and Yellowtail and more projects expected before the end of the decade, Minister Bharrat said the 2026 conference will place significant focus on local content, which he described as a success since the 2021 Act. “What is good about our energy conference is that we are not only focusing on oil and gas…because we are not only speaking oil and gas, we are speaking investment in Guyana, we are speaking about expansion of all the sectors in Guyana, building out new sector to support the oil and gas sector and the others too,” he noted. He added that ICT and manufacturing will also be key highlights, especially with the Gas-to-Energy project expected to come onstream next year, which will deliver cheaper and more reliable power, a major boost for local manufacturers.

BLUNT BLUNT

A $50,000 grant is not enough

The government's announcement of a one-off $50,000 cash grant for persons with disabilities is a welcome gesture, but it falls far short of what is needed.

A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable, and on that measure, Guyana still has a long road ahead. Persons with disabilities face barriers that most citizens never have to consider: in accessible transportation, higher medical costs, limited employment options, and chronic under representation in policy decisions that affect their lives.

A single payout, roughly the cost of a week's groceries for a family cannot meaningfully ease the long-term financial pressures they carry daily. Real support requires structural change: disabilityfriendly infrastructure, year-round financial assistance, workplace inclusion, and genuine consultation with advocacy groups.

A caring state must deliver more than seasonal relief; it must guarantee dignity and opportunity. $50,000 may brighten a moment, but it cannot transform a life. And transformation, not tokenism, should be the goal.
