“If the need arises, Guyana will defend its territory” - PM Phillips says ...as GDF commissions two new helicopters Prime Minister (PM) Retired Brigidaier Mark Phillips on Saturday said that Guyana will defend itself if the need arises. He was at the time speaking at the commissioning ceremony for two new helicopters - Bell 407 and Bell 429- at the Guyana Defence Force Hangar at Eugene F. Correria International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The Prime Minister, who spoke on behalf of President Irfaan Ali, reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening Guyana's national security, while protecting its sovereignty, and enhancing disaster-response capabilities.

According to the Department of Public Information (DPI) Phillips noted that the acquisition of the new helicopters is a reflection of deliberate and strategic investments into the modernization of the Defence Force which is in keeping with Guyana's responsibility as a sovereign state.

“With sovereignty comes responsibility…the most solemn of these responsibilities is the

obligation to safeguard our national sovereignty and preserve, protect and defend our territorial integrity.

That duty must be supported by sustained investment in our Defence Force,” Phillips said.

Acquired for $US10.1M the Bell 429 helicopter, has the capacity to seat two crew members and six passengers, with a payload capacity of 2,700 pounds, and its maximum cruise speed at 150 knots. Designed for multi-purpose roles the aircraft can be used for surveillance, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and rapid response missions.

The other aircraft, the Bell 407 helicopter, which was purchased for US$5.9 million, has the capacity to seat one crew member and six passengers, with a payload capacity of 2,300 pounds, and a maximum speed of 133 knots. This platform enhances the GDF's ability to conduct patrols, logistical support, and operations in remote and challenging terrain.

The PM reminded that the aircraft will significantly improve the GDF's operational reach, its

responsiveness, and flexibility, allow the supporting of border patrols, aerial surveillance, search and rescue operations, disaster response, medical evacuations, and logistical support to hinterland and riverain communities.

Guyana to close 2025 with over US$3.2 billion in oil account W

ith more oil b e i n g produced in the prolific Stabroek Block, with the early startup of the fourth Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, Guyana is expected to close 2025 with over US$3.2B in oil revenues.

This information is contained in the 2025 MidYear report, published by the Ministry of Finance.

At the beginning of the year, it was anticipated that the country would have earned US$2,503 million however; the country's daily capacity has been increased, resulting in a small hike in revenue from the sector.

Currently, Guyana is producing over 900,000 barrels per day (bpd) from

the four FPSOs in the Stabroek Block.

The Mid-Year report e x p l a i n e d , “ Wi t h t h e additional lifts, petroleum deposits for the year are now projected to total US$2,512.4 million, only marginally higher than the US$2,503 million projected at the time of preparing Budget 2025, on account of lower crude oil prices.”

Notably, at the time Budget 2025 was prepared, government expected to receive 31 lifts of profit oil from the Stabroek Block.

Each lift is equivalent to about one million barrels of oil.

Government is now projected to benefit from 33 lifts this year, following the earlier-than-anticipated start-up of the One Guyana

FPSO in August.

“Government is now expected to earn US$2,171.2 million from the sale of Guyana's share of profit oil, and US$341.2 million in royalties.

Further, in accordance with the NRF Act 2021, US$2,463.9 million is expected to be withdrawn from the Fund this year,” the Mid-Year Report outlines.

As such, Guyana is expected the close 2025 with a total of US$3.248B in oil revenue.

Recently, leader of the People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R), Aubrey Norton shared the view that a portion of oil revenue should be used to pay public servants.

He reasoned, “I am of the view that some amount of

President Irfaan Ali resources from oil should go to funding public servants and once that is done with expansion in the non-oil sector and ensuring more businesses come on stream then it (salary increase) is

sustainable.”

Norton was at the time making a case for government to pay a 25% salary increase in employees in the public service.

With just a few days remaining before Christmas, the government has not announced a salary increase or bonus for public servants.

President Irfaan Ali on Thursday however announced a one-month taxfree bonus for members of the joint services.

The announcement came a day after the President's address to the nation where he signaled that no cash grant will be forthcoming before Christmas, despite hinting at a cash transfer during his 2025 elections campaign. Public servants such as doctors, nurses and

teachers will be expected for the first time in years to meet holiday expenses without any additional revenue from government to cushion their high expenses.

Meanwhile, former advisor to the Leader of the Opposition, Elson Low argued that millions of USdollars wasted by government on the Gas-toEnergy (GTE) project as well as revenue the state is yet to recover from ExxonMobil could have financed a $100,000 cash grant to adult Guyanese.

He pointed to three areas that could have saved Guyana at least US$300M which in turn could have been used to finance the initiative, since this was the cost of the previous cash grant.

China releases new policy paper for Latin America, Caribbean …targets deeper collaboration in energy sector …suggests local-currency transactions to curb external shocks China has outlined plans to deepen cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) i n e n e r g y, f i n a n c e a n d infrastructure under a newly released policy paper—the third such document issued by Beijing in less than two decades.

The LAC policy paper was issued on Wednesday, December 10. According to the Chinese Embassy in Guyana, China released its first policy paper on the region in November 2008, followed by a second in November 2016. “The latest policy paper said China stands ready to join hands with Latin America and the Caribbean to promote the five p r o g r a m s o n s o l i d a r i t y, development, civilization, peace and people-to-people connectivity to advance shared development and revitalization, and write a new chapter in building a China-LAC community with a #sharedfuture,” the embassy said.

Energy and resources cooperation features prominently in the policy paper, with China signalling interest in both traditional and clean energy sectors across the full industrial chain.

“Based on the principles of winwin cooperation and sustainable development, China stands ready to

expand and deepen China-LAC cooperation on energy development and utilization across the whole industrial chain, increase cooperation in oil, gas and other t r a d i t i o n a l e n e rg y s e c t o r s , strengthen cooperation on clean energy such as hydropower, solar power, wind power and hydrogen energy, deepen cooperation on peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and enhance green development and utilization of mineral resources at various stages,” the paper states.

Notably, the policy also signals China's willingness to work with the region to explore mechanisms for long-term supply, as well as local-currency pricing and settlement of energy and resource products, aimed at reducing the impact of external economic and financial risks.

In Guyana, China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), through its subsidiary CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited is a 25% partner in the Stabroek Block,

alongside ExxonMobil and Hess.

C u r r e n t l y, t h e r e a r e f o u r developments producing oil from the Stabroek Block: Liza Phase 1, Liza Phase 2, Payara and Yellowtail.

The fourth project, Yellowtail achieved first oil in August and daily oil production has finally reached 900,000 barrels with the Yellowtail Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel reaching its initial capacity of 250,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Moreover, on the financial front, the paper outlines plans to support Chinese financial institutions in strengthening exchanges and cooperation with national, regional and international financial institutions in LAC countries, while also optimizing the construction of branch networks across the region.

It notes that efforts will be made to enhance dialogue and cooperation between central banks and financial regulatory authorities, expand cross-border local-currency settlement, discuss RMB clearing arrangements, and steadily promote monetary cooperation, including localcurrency swaps.

“Building on existing bilateral financial cooperation, China will

give full play to the role of ChinaLatin America Cooperation Fund, concessional loans, China-LAC Special Loan for Infrastructure, China-Latin American Production Capacity Cooperation Investment Fund and financing arrangements between China and the Caribbean countries, actively explore cooperation forms including insurance and financial leasing, further expand cooperation with regional financial institutions in LAC countries, and support cooperation in key areas and major projects between the two sides,” the policy states.

Infrastructure cooperation is identified as another key pillar, spanning traditional sectors such as transportation, energy and water projects, as well as emerging areas including renewable energy, digital infrastructure and smart cities.

According to the paper, “China encourages and supports competent domestic enterprises and financial institutions in actively participating in the planning and construction of infrastructure in Latin American and Caribbean countries, so as to enhance regional infrastructure connectivity and consistently empower regional economic growth and sustainable development.”

Zone of peace Zone of peace in the region has now seemingly joined the ranks of an extinct species. Those who were once taking what appeared to be firm positions for that same peace have since crumbled. Guyana's President Irfaan Ali was in the thick of that kind of healthy talk. He is now caught between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, he did take a stand for the region to be a zone of peace, which was a position to be commended. On the other, the Guyana Government has just signed a Statement of Intent with the US for 'expanded' military exercise in Guyana's waters.

There's a contradiction that cannot be denied, since zone of peace and expanded military drills or exercises are not the friendliest of neighbors. They coexist, if that is what it is, suspiciously and nervously.

President Ali had made his voice heard early about a zone of peace in this area. That noble call and vision has since been pushed to the edge of official considerations and releases, with only opposition or civil society voices echoing here and there. Though meaning well, the voices are weak, don't reach far, and then lack the power to gain any traction, and from that a groundswell of energy. Circumstances considered; peace has seemingly fled in the face of the tightening stranglehold on Venezuela. Now the ultimate objective of the US is the ouster of neighboring dictator, Nicolas Maduro. Needless to say, the job would be incomplete, unless a US-friendly replacement for him is arranged in Caracas.

The stranglehold is unrelenting, with war materiel already lined up from as far away as Puerto Rico with a stopover in Santo Domingo, then with clearance to use facilities in Trinidad and Tobago. That is pressure to capitulate, an intensifying psychological drama, if not war, that captures the attention of the world, and frightens the people in this region. From the perspective of Washington, the latter is inevitable, an unavoidable byproduct of preparations for war, and actual war. The US is an old hand at war, while this region that includes Guyana has known mostly peace, which looks increasingly likely to be turned on its head, given the developments that are in the public domain.

The aerial campaign against so-called narco-boats and terrorists have had fitful pauses, only to resume in sporadic bursts with lethal effect, and to the dismay of a world that watches on largely silently, as standards and conventions are trampled upon by the US unilaterally. More recently, an oil tanker carrying about two million barrels of Venezuelan crude was seized by the US. To add a local touch to that seizure, the Skipper was allegedly falsely flagged (Guyana) when it was intercepted. It could very well have been so, but Guyanese are well-advised to recall the lessons of history, and the pretexts employed by the US in the past. There was Vietnam and the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin, where Vietnamese guns fired on US ships. The US went to war in Iraq, after it had scared the daylights out of the world about Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction.

In both instances, history has revealed that the US is not above manipulating circumstances to suit its objectives, i.e., war by any means necessary. Now out of the White House comes the next step in this formidable series of escalations, the buildup of tensions in this region. It is a 'total and complete blockade' of sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers. If nothing else, the US has been successful in identifying vulnerable spots in Maduro's armor, then tearing them apart, piece by piece, with the end result sought being his departure.

Maduro has had his hands full from American pressure, so there has been some easing relative to his war of words against Guyana. There is that utility to US action directed against Venezuela. But it is doubtful that there is any easing up of anger and aggressive intentions against Guyana. In a time of the race to war, and disappearing Guyana Government postures about zone of peace, this country is precariously perched. The US is all over the place today.

Weaponising the cash grant Dear Editor, It is most disappointing that political parties, namely, WIN and APNU are weaponizing the cash grant at a time when the season of joy and goodwill is upon us.

This is no surprise since these parties are still sore and sour after being soundly kicked by the Guyanese masses at the last General Elections.

Let me make it clear from the inception, a cash grant before Christmas was never promised by the President, the Prime M i n i s t e r o r t h e Vi c e President, it was an expectation based on what transpired in 2024, statements misconstrued during the election campaign and what the WIN political fueled in the minds of people. The WIN leader is now hopelessly arguing that what the President said on the campaign trail is

tantamount to a 'moral contract'.

What is Mr. Azruddin's 'moral contract' as a Member of Parliament who is pending extradition to face federal charges for a massive gold smuggling and money laundering scheme, including wire fraud, conspiracy, and tax evasion totaling millions in the US? He should have done the honourable thing and resign.

Those who truly understand how government expenditures are done will know that monies for such expenditures must have budgetary allocation and approval by Parliament. It is not monies which can be doled out as if from one's personal purse.

WIN and its leader believe that a country should be run on cash grants and handouts and not sound socio-economic policies and feel that it is easier to attack

the Government by fueling this false expectation. This is hardly surprising. The WIN leader wants to impose his hedonistic life on his supporters and exact his pound of flesh.

Christmas is not about seeking maximum pleasure by partying and vulgarity but by exemplifying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Over the years, we have moved very far from this.

The questions are: What was Christmas like before the cash grant? How did Guyanese celebrate the holidays during the PNC dark era? How did they celebrate from 2015 to 2020 when Guyanese were burdened with onerous taxation, meagre wage increase and wage freeze in some cases? Some Guyanese tend to forget the times when putting food on the table was a criminal activity.

Today, Guyanese do not need a cash grant to celebrate this festive season. We have been given an abundance of measures by successive PPP/C Governments which have pushed us far away from the poverty line, especially our vulnerable ones and Guyanese are living a higher standard of living than ever before. Just try crossing the roads.

Supermarkets are strewn all over the place and never empty. Holiday shopping is increasing in intensity more than ever before.

Restaurants and other food outlets are packed, rum shops too. Renovations of homes and purchasing of household furniture and appliances are happening all over and the list goes on. All these are not happening because of cash grant. The Government has ensured that peoples' disposable incomes keep increasing all

and tents have further led to deteriorated living conditions of Palestinians in the face of storms, strong winds and heavy rainfall which flooded and swept away 27,000 tents k i l l i n g 1 1 Palestinians within 24 hours, while 13 residential buildings already damaged by Israeli bombings collapsed.

In the face of all these numerous violations, Israel has faced no penalties, consequences or accountability by the parties with responsibility for monitoring this tattered and failing 'ceasefire' and Trump Peace Plan.

It is well known that Israel has violated every ceasefire/peace plan with Palestine, Lebanon and has been bombing the territory of Syria repeatedly.

This 'Ceasefire' and 'Peace Plan' plan was supported by many countries including France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Canada, and the United Kingdom, yet citizens of the world have seen Israeli impunity with little or no

criticism, sanctions or p e n a l t i e s f o r I sraeli's continuing genocide.

In the face of the repeated violations by Israel of the first phase of this peace plan, BDS Guyana has no confidence that the second phase will fare any better as no stabilization force has been agreed and amidst continued violations by Israel with impunity of first phase of the peace plan. The tattered, failing 'Peace Plan' also lacks Palestinian representation, voice, recognition of Palestinian selfdetermination and sovereignty over a Palestine State. BDS Guyana calls on the Government of Guyana to break all diplomatic, economic and commercial ties with genocidal Israel including the Ministry of Agriculture hydroponic project in partnership with Israeli company Karlico Inc. We also call on private sector companies DDL to end their partnership with the Israeli LR Group and ENet to end its partnership with Israeli company Heights Telecom.

Is Guyana heading for a one-party State by excluding opposition parties from national planning?

Dear Editor, This is a national cry!

I write to express my consternation and deep disappointment regarding the recent meeting convened

by President Irfaan Ali to outline Guyana's development plan for the n e x t f i v e y e a r s . O u r, Guyana's motto -One People, One Nation, One Destiny- seems to be consecrated to dust.

Admittedly, the presentation of a national roadmap is both necessary and welcome but deliberate exclusion of the current parliamentarians of political parties, WIN, APNU, ANUG & FGM, is most vacuous. The current largest opposition party, WIN- led by the presumptive Leader of the Opposition, MP Azruddin Mohamedstill waiting to be confirmed, as the Opposition Leader, is a severe indignity to democratic principles and national cohesion.

Guyana stands at a pivotal moment in its history, with unprecedented economic transformation bringing both opportunity and profound challenge. For a plan of such magnitude to be legitimate, sustainable, and truly national, it must be built upon inclusive dialogue and incorporate diverse perspectives.

The exclusion of the o ff i c i a l p a r l i a m e n t a r y opposition, which represents nearly half of the electorate, undermines the very foundation of participatory democracy. It suggests that the plan is afoot to create partisan document rather than a national compact.

The specific omission of WIN- as the largest opposition bloc - is particularly egregious. Its elected representatives carry the mandate of hundreds of thousands of Guyanese citizens. To sideline them is to disregard the voices of a significant portion of the population. This approach

fosters alienation, deepens political division, and jeopardizes the long-term stability required to navigate our nation's complex future.

History has revealed that, post-Independence 1966, to date, Guyana growth trajectory has been entombed because development plan is crafted behind closed doors, with only the governing party and selected stakeholders at the table. This practice creates lax critical scrutiny and buyin necessary for enduring success.

Why this exclusionary approach? Is Guyana trending towards being a totalitarian regime?

Editor, statesmanship, not bullyism, demands that the President and his administration immediately engage the leader and representatives WIN, along with other opposition parties, in a serious and substantive manner regarding this five-year plan.

The challenges we face—from managing resource wealth equitably to ensuring social cohesion, e n v i r o n m e n t a l sustainability, and regional development—are not partisan issues. They are Guyanese issues, requiring Guyanese solutions forged through dialogue and respect for all democratic institutions and representatives.

In conclusion, our nation, Guyana's progress must be built on unity, not division; on inclusion, not exclusion. I personally call on all civil society organizations, the private sector, religious bodies, and the diplomatic community to add their voices in advocating for a return to inclusive governance and decry despotism.

The future of Guyana is too important to be left to one party alone.

Kaieteur M@ilbox Questions arising from lateDecember capital commitments Dear Editor, T h e r e c e n t announcement of a bid opening scheduled for December 22 for a major infrastructure project under the Ministry of Housing and Water raises a broader and legitimate question about year-end public spending practices.

Across government, December has long been a period when agencies face pressure to commit capital allocations before the fiscal year closes. While procurement activity itself is not improper, the timing of large-value contracts so

close to year-end warrants heightened transparency and public explanation, especially when those contracts draw from capital envelopes that also support housing development, utilities, and community infrastructure.

In this case, the Central Housing and Planning Authority has already absorbed a substantial share of the Ministry's 2025 capital allocation through access road and related works. Introducing another large package at this late stage naturally prompts (Continued on page 09)

The President has in his speech made it clear that a cash grant of $100,000 will be given in the new year with many more to follow. This money should be seen as a saving and not as money to be splurged and wasted. This money should be saved and utilized in a manner which will add meaningful value to our lives.

Many times, I have seen that retroactive pays and bonuses do more harm than good for some people who feel that excessive imbibing and immoral activities is what makes the holiday enjoyable.

It is time we change this bad approach to this season.

Instead of sitting around a bottle of rum, sit with your family in the home in a sober manner and enjoy some ginger beer and black cake and reflect on the positives.

Spend your money wisely, and give some charity to the

less fortunate. Visit your place of worship and pray for a better year ahead.

Our President has outlined a slew of strong measures that will bring sustainable social and economic relief and further propelled our country into more progress and prosperity and we should take all the opportunities available to enrich our personal lives.

Guyana is now a land of many opportunities and it is time we think higher than cash grants and handouts.

In conclusion, Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer ever lived, gave us a good advice when he said that, 'When you ask God for a gift, be thankful when he does not send diamonds, pearls or riches'. And as the Good Book says: Man shall not live by bread alone…

Petroleum Commission urgently needed to match negotiation skills of oil giants rushing to Guyana As Guyana embarks on a new trajectory, diving deep into the petroleum sector, the nation may be at a disadvantage, selling itself short as it fails to establish an expert team to manage the sector.

Most countries establish a body referred to as a

petroleum commission, with specialists appointed to govern the affairs of the industry. The commission is established to prevent politicians from engaging in rampant corruption through under-the-table deals and underhand transactions.

A Partnership for

National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Terrence Campbell, reiterated the importance of the petroleum commission during a party press conference on Friday.

Campbell was asked by this newspaper to share his thoughts on the new

- MP Campbell P roduction Sharing Agreements (PSAs) that have been inked for two smaller oil blocks, located in shallow waters, offshore Guyana, when he pointed to the need for the petroleum commission to be in place.

He explained, “I have glanced at the new PSA, it's an improvement on what existed previously in terms of royalty, in terms of cooperation tax, in terms of cost recovery but again my preference would have been a situation where we had a petroleum commission as the law requires and where there would be opposition representatives on such a Commission to inform those negotiations.”

The MP noted that while the new oil deal features improved terms, an ideal arrangement would have been for the contract to be negotiated by experts.

According to him, “We should have a team that is skilled, understands the oil sector, understands taxation, drilling, everything because when we go up against Exxon (and other oil companies), we are going up against a company whose GDP, or gross revenues are way much larger than Guyana's and who have the

skilled human resources that they will bring to those negotiations and when we are going to negotiate with Exxon, we need to do the same and in a way that is not threatening to other investors in the sector.”

Guyana discovered oil in 2015 and later commenced production activities in December 2019. The country swiftly moved to increase production to over 900,000 barrels in a mere six years, with four Floating production Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSOs) currently operating in the Stabroek Block.

Beyond the Stabroek Block, Guyana launched its maiden oil blocks auction in 2022, securing bids for eight of 14 offshore blocks.

So far, contracts and licences have been approved for Block S4 and Block S7.

As the Guyana basin continues to attract more giants in the industry, stakeholders argue that the petroleum commission is urgently needed to ensure the country is not shortchanged in the negotiations stage.

This is particularly important as the deal with ExxonMobil continues to attract criticisms both locally and internationally.

In fact, the contract is often defined as the worst oil deal known to the industry as it extends extraordinary benefits to the contractor, while the country is left with onerous fiscal terms and conditions that prevent

How the government chose private profit over public good

F

or many years, the sugar industry in Guyana has been in trouble. The company that runs it, GUYSUCO, loses a lot of money. Every year, the government uses billions of dollars from the people to keep it running. This is tax money that could build schools, fix roads, or help hospitals.

A plan was made years ago to fix the problems of sugar. It was a turnaround plan. The idea was simple.

GUYSUCO needed to stop losing money. It needed to break even. To do this, the plan focused on two main things.

First, it aimed to lower the cost of producing our traditional sugar. Second, and very importantly, it aimed to create new ways for GUYSUCO to earn money.

These are called revenue

streams.The plan was not a secret. It centered on smart, modern projects. One major idea was co-generation of electricity. The waste from sugar cane, called bagasse, could be burned to produce power. GUYSUCO could then sell this electricity to the national grid. This would bring in steady cash.

Another idea was to move beyond raw sugar. The plan was for GUYSUCO to produce value-added sugars.

This means packaged sugars for supermarkets. Think of the white sugar you buy in a sealed bag at the store. That bag sells for more than the raw bulk sugar GUYSUCO usually exports. There were also plans to produce molasses. And possibly even to start a rum distillery. Rum is a high-value product.

The goal was clear. Use these new projects to create

new income. Combine that income with lower production costs. This mix would allow GUYSUCO to stand on its own feet. It would help the thousands of workers who depend on it. It was a practical plan for a public company.

Given this plan, a recent government decision is shocking. It is, I daresay, disgraceful.

We have learned that the government has given permission to a private company. This company will be allowed to produce white, packaged sugar right here in Guyana. This is exactly the kind of value-added product the turnaround plan mentioned for GUYSUCO. Just why was GUYSUCO not allowed this benefit? It is unexplainable.

It is inexplicable.

From page 6 questions: How does this award affect other planned projects? Were alternative delivery timelines considered? And what safeguards are in place to ensure that procurement decisions are driven by planning priorities rather than calendar pressure?

Rather than leaving these questions to speculation after the fact, the Ministry and the Authority would do well to practise proactive disclosure at the point of award.

Publishing the successful bidder, contract value, mobilisation or advance payment arrangements, implementation timelines, and how the project fits within the remaining 2025 capital programme would go a long way toward reassuring the public that fiscal discipline and value for money remain paramount, even in the final days of the financial year.

He let out a sigh heavier dan a bag of Parliament rice. “Honey,” he say, voice now flat like a busted soda.

“Ah hope dem get turn down at de Embassy. Last thing we need is fuh dem to come eat up all we food and ask fuh go sightseeing every day.”

He wife nod slow, neva takin’ she eye off de TV. “Tell me ‘bout it,” she say.

“And you know dey gon’ want to take back two suitcases full of clothes, paid for by we. Is a whole month obligation we just invite.”

Is so it does go. One set of sweet talk fuh yuh ears, an’ a next, colder calculation fuh de private living room. De diaspora dream, it seem, come wid a secret prayer fuh de embassy to be de “bad guy” an’ just say no.

So, to all yuh preparin’ fuh yuh embassy interview, mek sure yuh suit sharp an’ yuh answers crisp. But remember, while yuh family abroad shoutin’ “Come!” dere might be a quiet whisper in dey heart sayin’, “...but nah right now.”

Guyana almost a one-party state already

I

t's time for congratulations.

Warm, glistening.

Like beer left in the sun too long.

A garland of congratulations to Pres. Ali. His One Guyana production leaps off the screen. From propaganda to palpable pappy-show. The latter has more substance.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo

cracks a fat smile, just like he did when Charandas Persaud pulled the plug on the PNC and AFC. He was the smart one-a prophet.

He fixed himself first, then fixed the wagon of the PNC and the AFC for good.

What are friends for, if not to pull off these debilitating stunts. A steady stream of them in the months and years

to come. Come to think of it, years may be going too far.

Poor Terrence Campbell, he started out with an aircraft missing an engine, now a piece of a wing just got torn off. Some PNC (even WIN) reps cast their eyes around, and quickly concluded that the green on the PPP side is greener than PNC green and WIN blue.

I see a one-party country.

What of the Guyanese people?

Guyanese, who cares? That's the center of my concern.

A man promised them a cash grant, and now he twists himself into knots to get out of that knot. They will get one.

Later. If for a cash grant, then the stage is set for bigger things. Somebody

has their heart set on a third term. Not I. Bring a stack of Bibles, so I can swear. The same can't be said of Dr. I. Ali, for he gave his word on a cash grant this year, and now look at his antics. Next year.

Most unbecoming for a president.

There will be a cash grant; he is just stringing the p o o r, v u l n e r a b l e , a n d helpless people along; enjoying himself at their expense. Ever see a man go to a wake-house and breakout into a dance? Well, they are people like that in Guyana. Simply examine the verbal tangoes of local politicians. In a one-party country, pols can get away with those abuses.

Regarding Dr. Jagdeo, bibles aren't his thing. He had made his third-term ambitions clear all the way to the CCJ. All those who crowed that that was the end of his presidential hopes w e r e t o o e a r l y, t o o shortsighted. Delayed, not denied.

There are the ambitious in the opposition; those waiting, timing their plunge.

The issue will be who in the PPP wants to fight for the third term more? Ali or Jagdeo? I look at reality.

Parliamentary is now a bigger rubberstamp, with Speaker Nadir having arranged some bigger smiley faces for his seal and stamp.

The opposition is wracked by uncertainty, the murky, and the delicacy of neurosurgery. Where is it anyway?

Who's readying to cut navel string, make the move next? The PNC lost big, and among its ranks are those who calculate how to transform into a winner.

WIN thought it won big, only to lose bigger.

Drs. A and J hold all the cards. Come to my parlor said the spider to the fly.

Less about poetry, all about

money.

My earlier question hangs like a naked stranger in a cathedral: what will become of distressed Guyanese? Someone has to think of them, hold them dear, not see them as horse manure.

That is, to be used, then discarded. If there are five to six political parties in today's Guyana, and all these con games are still happening, then what horrors are in store when only one party has all the power, all the control, and almost a total share of the dirty tricks' men and women in Guyana?

Guyanese have had the privilege of seeing Dr. Jagdeo in action first, then when it was believed that things couldn't be worse, until galloped Dr. Ali into town.

Who that's of sound mind, wishes to see more of them? Many in the PNC or WIN are not stupid, they can count just like everyone else.

The pickings on the opposition side are drier than a dry. Why go through the motions, waste time, flog a lame horse?

I wish that all these smart fellows had been upfront with their supporters prior to the elections.

Or come straight out for MIA and BJ at that time.

Don't make big promises to the people, then disown them like yesterday's garbage. I hope that I don't hear any nonsense about astute leadership and such. How many more? Guyanese fear the one-man Venezuelan show called Maduro. There are some of the them right here. One-man, one-party rule. Coming to a PPP social media theater soon.

SUSPENSION OF U.S. VISAS — A Moment for Clarity, Calm, and Cooperation

By Sir Ronald Sanders The recent proclamation issued by the Government of the United States, announcing its intention to suspend the entry of nationals of Antigua and Barbuda and the Commonwealth of Dominica, effective at 12:01 a.m. on 1 January 2026, has understandably caused concern among citizens of the two Caribbean countries. Since then, it has been learned that nationals of other Caribbean countries, including government ministers, have been denied U.S. visas.

For many in these countries — as in the rest of the Caribbean — access to the United States for family ties, education, medical care, business, and opportunity is deeply valued.

Any uncertainty about that access naturally gives rise to anxiety, not only for individuals but also for economies that are closely linked to the United States through trade, tourism, investment, and people-topeople exchange. There is therefore an urgent and legitimate need for clarity about what will apply after 1 January 2026, particularly with respect to existing visas.

From the moment the proclamation was published, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and I have been actively engaged with senior representatives of the United States Government to seek clarity and to work constructively toward resolution. Those efforts are ongoing. It is relevant to note that the proclamation came as an unexpected development, including to officials within the U.S. system responsible for Caribbean affairs.

It would be disingenuous not to acknowledge that it was disappointing for

Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica that this proclamation was issued without advance notice to either government.

This is especially so given that, for almost a year, representatives of several departments of the United States Government and the governments of the five Caribbean countries operating Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programmes have been engaged in sustained and detailed discussions on precisely these issues. That engagement was constructive and undertaken in good faith on all sides.

Moreover, the five countries took collective steps — based on recommendations from U.S. officials — to streamline and strengthen the legislative and regulatory frameworks governing their CBI programmes.

The stated reason for the proclamation, as it applies to Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica, is that these countries have historically operated CBI programmes “without residency.” In Antigua and Barbuda’s case, that characterisation does not reflect the full facts. Antigua and Barbuda has always had a residency requirement, and in November of this year Parliament significantly strengthened it as part of a broader package of legislative reforms.

Dominica has also enacted extensive reforms.

These measures were taken precisely to address concerns raised and to align systems with the highest international standards.

Some surprise has also been expressed that Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica were identified for visa restrictions when three other Caribbean countries operating similar programmes were not included. This, too, is a matter that merits calm clarification through dialogue.

There has inevitably been speculation by commentators and political activists about what they describe as the “real reasons” behind the proclamation. Governments, however, cannot conduct relations on the basis of speculation. Diplomatic engagement must proceed on the basis of the reasons formally stated by governments themselves.

In this instance, those reasons relate to CBI programmes and residency requirements, and that is therefore the issue that must be a d d r e s s e d d i r e c t l y, f a c t u a l l y, a n d constructively.

Antigua and Barbuda fully recognises the sovereign right — and indeed the responsibility — of the United States to protect its citizens from external threats and to ensure that visas are not used for illicit or harmful purposes. We share those objectives.

That is why we remain ready to work with the United States to establish and refine all necessary safeguards and guardrails to ensure that the systems we operate present no risk to U.S. security.

For 250 years, Caribbean countries and the United States have shared a tradition of close, cooperative, and mutually beneficial relations — economically, socially, and strategically. That relationship has served all our peoples well. It is that tradition which must now guide us: preserving security while maintaining lawful and legitimate access for citizens to each other’s countries.

This moment therefore calls not only for calm, but for timely clarity. Prolonged

uncertaint y benefits no one. For citizens who Sir Ronald Sanders have already been vetted and issued valid visas by United States authorities, it is reasonable that lawful travel be allowed to continue — subject to any additional checks the United States considers necessary — while longer-term solutions are finalised for new visa applicants.

Antigua and Barbuda approaches this matter in good faith, with respect for the sovereign responsibilities of the United States and confidence in the value of our long-standing relationship. We look to that tradition of dialogue and cooperation to ensure that security is upheld without unintended harm to ordinary people, legitimate commerce, education, and family ties.

That work has already begun, and mechanisms are now being examined by officials of the United States and Antigua and Barbuda with the intention of identifying early and practical solutions.

That balance has been achieved before. It can — and should — be achieved again.

WEEK-IN-REVIEW SUNDAY Calls grow for transparency on Guyana–US defence pact amid rising regional tension A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Saturday called on the Government of Guyana to be transparent about the recent signing of a Statement of Intent with the United States of America on December 9 to expand joint military and defence cooperation.

Kaieteur News reported on December 11 that U.S. Department of War officials made a high-profile visit to Guyana, signaling Washington’s renewed focus on the region amid escalating tensions with Venezuela.

Senior Advisor to the Secretary of War Patrick Weaver and Acting Assistant Secretary Joseph Humire (Americas Security Affairs) met with President Irfaan Ali and Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan to deepen a strategic partnership seen as critical to safeguarding regional stability, the U.S. Embassy here said in a press release.

According to a U.S. Embassy press release, discussions focused on U.S. s u p p o r t f o r G u y a n a ’s territorial integrity and collaboration to advance regional security and stability. During the trip, Senior Advisor Weaver said, “close coordination with regional partners is critical to advancing regional security.

The U.S.-Guyana partnership dates back to 1966, and it’s important that we strengthen our cooperation and help to support a sovereign and prosperous Guyana.”

The United States and G u y a n a e n j o y a longstanding security partnership that focuses on promoting a safe, sovereign, and prosperous Guyana, countering transnational criminal organizations, and advancing shared goals of peace and stability across the broader Caribbean and South America, the release concluded. While the meetings highlighted longstanding cooperation dating back to Guyana’s independence in 1966, analysts note a sharper geopolitical subtext: the United States is actively strengthening alliances along its southern frontier in

response to Venezuela’s increasingly assertive posture, which has included military drills, border mobilizations, and anti-U.S. rhetoric.

The two countries also signed a Statement of Intent to expand joint military cooperation with full respect for the sovereignty and laws of both countries.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, APNU urged the government to divulge more details amid the backdrop of rising tension in Latin America and the Caribbean Region. In a statement, parliamentarian Riaz Z. Rupnarain said the party “assumes that this measure is intended to support and p r o t e c t t h e n a t i o n ’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“It is understood that a document of this kind may not be placed in the public domain without compelling reasons, However, APNU finds it disconcerting that, given the importance of the SOI, the government has not chosen to inform the Public of its importance and how it addresses national security, defense cooperation, and Guyana’s strategic position in an increasingly difficult and complex regional environment.”

Further, Rupnarain said that the absence of a Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations and the lack of an opportunity for Members of Parliament to discuss the specifics of the agreement with the government at the Parliamentary level are equally concerning.

“Instead of boosting public trust, these omissions raise valid concerns about the government’s commitment to transparency a n d a c c o u n t a b i l i t y, a l l

cardinal elements of a democratic society,” he said.

The member of parliament said that the move by the government raises several questions.

Among them, what commitments were made to the US? Does the SOI affect operational co-operation or access to Guyanese territory? Is the SOI linked to future arrangements such as Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and or Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) under the Foreign Military Sales system? And what safeguards exist to protect Guyana’s sovereignty and the interests of our people?

“The APNU reiterates its commitment to constructive involvement on all foreign policy and national security issues. Strong and mutually beneficial partnerships with important states in international community are s o m e t h i n g w e wholeheartedly support.

Nonetheless, these arrangements must be in keeping with the rule of law, the engagement of, and in consultation with the people of Guyana. APNU urges the government to lay the SOI in the Parliament as a key step in ensuring transparency and accountability,” the APNU representative said.

Leader was speaking at a party press conference when he stated, “I believe that the audit report should be made public. From the inception, we were insisting…they inherited the first audit report and so they were compelled to do it, but I have seen no signs that the government is interested in the auditing, the serious auditing of ExxonMobil or anyone.”

He argued that the PNC/R has been advocating for Guyanese to be trained to be able to conduct the technical reviews necessary of the company’s spending, however he has seen no action from government in that regard.

Norton added that there is no justification for the extended delay in publishing the audit report handed over to government since May this year. Furthermore, he reminded that the party has been calling for the release of the document from the beginning.

Today now marks 214 days or seven months after it was reported that the auditors completed the review of the company’s expenses.

Notably, the review of the company’s financial activities is crucial in ensuring that Guyana received its rightful share of profits from the Stabroek Block. In accordance with the terms of the 2016 Production Sharing Agreement (PSA), ExxonMobil and its coventurers invest in developing the resources discovered in the block.

Guyana has taken a backseat approach where spending by the Stabroek block partners is concerned.

US-dollars which must be paid back by Guyana with its oil. This process is known as cost recovery.

Each month, Exxon is allowed to take 75% of the oil produced in the Stabroek Block for its expenses.

Increased oil production also equates to higher cost recovery for the company.

The remaining portion of revenue is then split with Guyana as profit. This arrangement has often been criticized with stakeholders demanding not only a reduction in the cost recovery percentage, but a seat at the table where large contracts especially are negotiated. In this manner, Guyana can ensure it gets the best value for its money, prior to the signing of an agreement, as compared with verifying costs after a contract is awarded.

The third audit was conducted by VHE consulting, a local consortium comprising Ramdihal & Haynes Inc; Eclisar Financial; and Vi t a l i t y A c c o u n t i n g & Consultancy Inc. The arrangement commenced in secret with the contract signing taking place in the absence of media personnel, a notable deviation from the previous process.

Prior to the US$19.6B audit of expenses between 2021 and 2023, the same company was contracted to conduct the second audit through a more transparent process where media personnel were not only invited to attend the signing but scrutinize the arrangement.

On May 15, 2025, the minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat revealed that the audit was completed and the report handed over to government for review. Five months later,

in October, Bharrat informed this newspaper that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) was still conducting a technical review of the report and would make the document public after the process was completed.

Recently, Bharrat was asked again about the report and directed all questions to the tax agency.

Notably, the GRA has not responded to any queries from this newspaper relating to the audit.

MONDAY Guyana’s oil and gas sector in “deep trouble”- Norton …says country lacks planning for prudent management …greater Parliamentary involvement needed Instead of a ‘wake up and implement’ approach to the management of Guyana’s blossoming petroleum industry, Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) Aubrey Norton has called for a more careful method that involves stringent planning for prudent governance of the sector.

Norton during a press conference on Friday told reporters that the current method, as outlined by President Irfaan Ali of ‘making up a plan as we go along’ cannot be sustainable.

In fact, he said the President has exposed the glaring reality that the sector is in “deep trouble”. The former Opposition Leader was at the time addressing a question from this newspaper on the government’s push to ramp up oil production in the Stabroek Block, through a process referred to as optimisation. This allows operators such as ExxonMobil to increase oil production beyond the design rates of the Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSOs) that operate offshore. The process involves assessing the vessels for areas to safely increase production levels.

Norton made it clear that while he believes Guyana should seize the opportunity to develop its natural resources, more planning and analyses should be employed by the government of Guyana.

From page 12 be given the opportunity to develop their oil resources not one who believes it should stay in the ground for pure environmental concerns but I do believe as well, the environment must be taken into consideration and all the plans should have proper environmental impact assessments, it should have proper financial assessment and it should be done in the context of the long-term development of Guyana,” he said.

To this end, he clarified that any increased levels of production must be backed by robust assessments and careful consideration of the environment. Additionally, he explained that the Parliamentarians should also be included in the process.

Arguments were previously made for proposed increases to be vetted in the National Assembly.

According to Norton, “I think they (plans to increase oil production) should be vetted by stakeholders- a wider cross section.

Parliamentarians are one but these are things I believe should include the private sector, it should include other civil society organisations and it should include a professional core of people who have the capacity to deal with such things.”

He stressed, “I believe that we have to have a plan and if we have a plan, the government should put out the plan and that plan should be able to tell us the areas of production we are going in, the benefits, the limitations...in the absence of those things, you are just talking about ramped up production. It’s not done within a proper policy f r a m e w o r k o r a developmental program and it is likely to be disastrous.”

Back in November this newspaper reported that government had approved a request by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) to increase production on two Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSOs) by 30,000 barrels each, pushing the projects to produce a total of 60,000 barrels above their design capacity.

Government explained that the higher production rates were driven by successful optimisation activities conducted on the Liza Unity and Prosperity FPSOs. Optimisation in the oil and gas sector refers to a process geared at enhancing oil recovery. The company would assess the performance of the facilities for existing limitations of the installed equipment to determine how those could be improved.

According to the report, “These scopes, largely entailing topside debottlenecking activities, will continue to enable production rates averaging beyond 250,000 (barrels per day) bpd at Unity and Prosperity into the second half, respectively.” It is important to note that the

Liza Unity FPSO, which produces oil at the Liza Two development, has a design capacity of 220,000 bpd, according to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The document also states that “the facilities will have the potential to safely operate at sustained peaks of oil production up to approximately 250,000 bpd”. Be that as it may the vessel is now producing over its safe operating limit.

Similarly, the Prosperity FPSO which produces oil at the third deep-water development offshore was designed to produce 220,000 bpd, according to the EIA. EPA drops EIA requirements for shallow-water exploration The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ruled out the need for an Environmental Impact

Assessment (EIA) for a planned 3D seismic activity in shallow waters offshore Guyana.

According to project documents seen by this newspaper, the exploration activities are expected to be conducted over a three-year period, commencing January 1, 2026 to 2028. The seismic works are earmarked for three sites, measuring a total of 25,604.78 square kilometers or almost the size of the Stabroek Block, operated by ExxonMobil.

Seismic surveys are routinely used in offshore oil and gas exploration activities worldwide to detect and define geological structures under the seabed.

An application for the initial oil exploration works was made by CGG, an affiliate company of the Viridien group. Viridien is a global advanced technology, digital and Earth data company that provides a comprehensive range of data, products, services and solutions for complex digital, energy transition, natural resource, environmental and infrastructure challenges. In addition to proprietary offshore projects for clients such as Exxon, which discovered the successful Liza field from CGG data, CGG acquired the only two offshore multi-client projects available for licensing in Guyana (Stabroek Phase 1 & 2).

R e g i o n a l l y, C G G recently completed a multiclient project in Suriname in 2023. Covering 1,800 sq km, Phase IV completed the programmed 14,500 sq km survey of newly acquired 3D data in deep and shallow water in the GuyanaSuriname basin.

On 11 November 2025, CGG applied for an E n v i r o n m e n t a l Authorisation to the EPA, seeking to conduct geophysical 3D surveys within shallow waters offshore of Guyana. The areas for the shallow water survey are outlined on a map attached.

The survey area is offshore of Guyana, east of the border of Venezuela and west of the border of Suriname. The closest shore distance is around 120 km away and ranges with water depths approximately 10 to 70 metres deep.

According to the Project Summary, a research vessel with a towed streamer will be used for the seismic acquisition. Towed streamer 3D seismic acquisition allows for the efficient and comprehensive mapping of offshore geological formations, providing valuable insights for oil and gas exploration and production activities.

“This is a common method us ed to gather detailed subsurface geological information in offshore exploration for oil

and gas. CGG currently plans to use the BGP Prospector for this project.”

The company noted that the vessel is fully furnished with state-of-the-art equipment for seismic 3D surveys.

Kaieteur News understands that the activities will be conducted in a total of eight phases beginning with setup and deployment, data acquisition and closing with data p r o c e s s i n g a n d interpretation.

Impacts associated with the planned development includes marine noise, marine water quality and climate, fishing and marine traffic disruptions among others.

Marine seismic data acquisition is based on the principle of ‘seismic reflection’. The method involves releasing pulses of acoustic energy (i.e., sound waves) at regular intervals along designated transect lines. In general, the energy penetrates subsurface formations and is reflected back to the surface where it can be detected by acoustic receivers, or hydrophones, encased in a long cable (i.e., streamer), which is towed behind the seismic vessel.

Each time a seismic pulse meets a change in rock properties; part of the pulse is reflected back to the surface and received by the hydrophones. Consequently, by measuring precisely the difference in arrival time of reflected seismic energy, distinct subsurface rock layers can be identified, and subsequently mapped. This map helps geoscientists understand the geology and structure of natural resources. It plays an integral role in decision making when exploring for and developing oil and gas reserves in ocean waters.

No EIA The EPA in a decision published on its website explained that the developer will not be required to conduct an EIA for the threeyear seismic activities. The regulator listed three reasons for its decision but indicated that the project has not yet been approved.

The Agency said, “The impacts are transient. The acoustic disturbance moves continuously with the vessel and does not result in permanent habitat alteration or permanent presence.”

T h e Ve n e z u e l a n Vi c e President’s statement noted: “In immediate response to this ‘escalation of hostilities and serious aggressions’, Ve n e z u e l a n P r e s i d e n t Nicolás Maduro has made the decision to immediately terminate any existing contract, agreement, or negotiation for the supply of natural gas to T&T.” According to the statement, Venezuela has “full knowledge” of Trinidad and Tobago’s participation in the theft of Venezuelan oil committed on December 10 by the US administration through the assault on a ship transporting the strategic product.

T h e Ve n e z u e l a n government described this incident as “a serious violation of international law and a clear transgression of the principles of free navigation and trade.”

The statement also directly points to the Prime Minister of Trinidad and

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez Tobago, Kamla PersadB i s s e s s a r, a s h a v i n g “revealed a hostile agenda against Venezuela since her arrival in government.”

Among the actions denounced is the “installation of US military radars” in Trinidad and Tobago to harass Venezuelan ships. VP Rodriguez said Venezuela considers that “this official has turned its territory into a ‘US aircraft carrier to attack Venezuela, in an unequivocal act of vassalage’.”

President Maduro proceeded to denounce the Energy Cooperation Framework Agreement previously signed with T&T. “Faced with this ‘very serious act that aims to blatantly steal Venezuela’s oil’, the Government has decided to sever energy ties with the Caribbean nation,” t h e Ve n e z u e l a n V P ’ s statement reported.

The Venezuelan Government in a statement accused the U.S. of “blatant theft” and described the seizure as “an act of international piracy”. Guyana Movement (FGM) and Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir has sounded a stark warning over rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela, cautioning that any escalation into open conflict in Caribbean waters could have devastating and irreversible consequences for Guyana and the wider region.

Speaking during an interview on GoMosely Radio, Walton-Desir said the Caribbean’s long-cherished identity as a “zone of peace” is now under serious threat.

“I am deeply concerned.

What we are seeing is an aspiration we held on to for decades slipping away, and that has to alarm all of us,” she said. She also criticised what she described as a lack of decisive regional intervention by CARICOM. Walton-Desir warned that any escalation into war would have direct and lasting consequences for Guyana, particularly given its proximity to Venezuela. She stressed that regional leaders must approach the situation with restraint. “For us in this region though, our leaders, the ones that speak on our behalf have to understand that now is the time for them to be very sober and very temperate because we have seen this played out in other parts of the world and it never ends well...do you understand what this means for Guyana should this happen? Do you understand that our lives will never be the same if war breaks out in Venezuela and so we have got to understand the implications for us,” she cautioned.

The MP explained that a conflict would likely result in a sharp increase in migration into Guyana. She noted that an influx of refugees would overwhelm the country’s healthcare, education, and social

services, while forcing the government to divert resources away from improving the lives of Guyanese. Walton-Desir also warned of serious security implications, including the spill over of illegal arms, drugs, and criminal activity.

While acknowledging Ve n e z u e l a ’ s a c t i o n s r e g a r d i n g G u y a n a ’s Essequibo territory, WaltonDesir maintained that war would serve no constructive purpose. “Maduro has been a pain in our side as it relates to Essequibo, but war in the region will serve no purpose, it will benefit no one,” she said.

CARICOM lack of regional intervention In relation to CARICOM, Walton-Desir said the regional body must take a stronger, more unified stance. She called for a return to a rules-based international order and criticised the organisation’s long-standing inability to act collectively, which she said has left Caribbean states vulnerable to pressure from larger powers. “I think Caricom as a body in terms of a head of government are in a difficult position of navigating their local realities in the context of this multilateral agency.

Last Wednesday, the United States seized an oil tanker just off the coast of Ve n e z u e l a , a n a c t i o n confirmed by President Donald Trump. The vessel had been sanctioned by the U.S., and Trump stated that the oil would be retained by U.S. authorities, according to Reuters reports. In response, the Venezuelan government accused the United States of “blatant theft” and described the seizure as “an act of international piracy.” The Venezuelan government said it would “defend its

s o v e r e i g n t y, n a t u r a l resources, and national dignity with absolute determination” and denounce the seizure of the tanker before international bodies.

The seizure marked the first known action against an oil tanker since the U.S. ordered a significant military build-up in the region. The U.S. has already carried out several strikes against suspected drug vessels, which has raised concerns among lawmakers and legal experts. British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the tanker Skipper was believed to have been seized off Venezuela early on Wednesday. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the tanker for what Wa s h i n g t o n s a i d w a s involvement in Iranian oil trading when it was called the Adisa.

The vessel reportedly left Venezuela’s main oil port carrying approximately 1.1 million barrels of crude. The Skipper left Venezuela’s main oil port of Jose between December 4 and 5 after loading about 1.1 million barrels of Venezuela’s Merey heavy crude, according to satellite info analysed by TankerTrackers.com and internal shipping data from Ve n e z u e l a n s t a t e o i l company PDVSA. Oil futures rose following news of the seizure. After trading in negative territory, Brent crude futures rose 27 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $62.21 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 21 cents, also 0.4%, to close at $58.46 per barrel.

ons especially are husbands and providers of their mothers. The daughters have it worst, being daddy’s spouse and caregiver. When problems or challenges came up, you had to act with more maturity than your parent(s).

As a child no matter the age, you found yourself giving advice to your parent(s) when they had romantic difficulties.

When your parents argued, you found yourself taking sides (or expected to take sides) and defending one of them. When your parents argued, you had to step in and help them resolve things. Your parent(s) turned to you, instead of their partner or another adult, to unburden any feelings of emotional distress they ex p erien ced . A fter an argument or conflict with the other parent, your parent(s) turned to you for comfort and support.

To help maintain family harmony, you took on responsibilities in childhood that weren’t age appropriate.

You recognize that you couldn’t fully enjoy your childhood.

The needs of your parent(s) took priority over your needs. You envied the relationships your friends had with their parents. You realize you had to mature, or “grow up,” sooner than your peers to better support your parent(s).

You had to consider, or even manage, household responsibilities for your parent(s). On the surface, this closeness might seem positive, even beneficial.

But it’s not the same as family cohesion, or healthy closeness, and it can become quite confining.

In relationships that involve emotional incest, the parental figure views the child as they would a spouse, close friend, or their own parent. They may reveal personal problems to the child and seek advice, support, and comfort. They expect their children to respond like another adult would, even though this is beyond the child’s maturity level. Children may be guilted into taking on this role and do whatever they can to please their parents.

Healthy parent/child relationships involve appropriate boundaries.

There is an understanding that parents provide support to their child and seek their own emotional support from

other outlets, like a friend, partner, or therapist. Parents know and respect their children’s limits and do not place inappropriate expectations on them. They treat them like children, not adults.

When made to emotionally fulfill the role of a spouse, children can develop a variety of psychological conditions.

However, with treatment like therapy, the cycle of abuse can be broken. Emotional incest, also called covert incest, describes an unhealthy family dynamic where a parent relies on their child for emotional and practical advice and support.

Despite the name, it doesn’t involve physical sexual abuse: “Incest” refers to inappropriate emotional closeness. Emotional incest can also happen unconsciously. In a dynamic of emotional incest, your parents treat a child, not as their child, but more like a romantic partner. Instead of providing appropriate parental guidance and helping a child to meet their emotional needs, they, parents, rely on their child for: comfort and company when they feel lonely or sad.

Help navigate their financial concerns. Advice on navigating conflicts at work or in their personal relationships. Being loyalty to them, especially in family and or spousal conflicts rather than the other parent Why Do Adults Engage in Emotional Incest?

Parents who engage in covert incest often don’t see their approach to parenting as harmful. They may think that they are doing what is right as a parent and fail to see how their behavior toward their children is problematic.

Each family is unique and parents may display emotional incest for different reasons, like if they had a parent act similarly when they were a child, or if they’re going through a divorce and relying on their children for too much emotional support. This emotionally incestuous parent may be more likely to engage in emotional incest when. They have experienced emotional incest themselves. They lack good role models and knowledge of how to parent a child in a healthy way.

Parents are divorced. Singleparent and stepparent families are at greater risk for

emotional incest. One parent struggles with mental illness or addiction. The parent who is not mentally ill or dealing with addiction may form an unhealthy bond with the child to try to help the mentally ill or addicted parent. Yet this behavior can still cause significant pain, not to mention disrupt healthy development. In fact, physical and emotional incest can have similar longterm effects on child development. Parents who commit emotional incest often lack their own healthy support systems. They may be single, divorced, or in an unhappy marriage. Families may be dealing with addiction or mental illness.

Potential Consequences of Emotional Incest Children who experience emotional incest are at risk for anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. They may develop eating disorders or sexual dysfunction issues, low selfesteem, and perfectionism. It can also create problems with the other parents (if they are present) and siblings, who may feel resentful of the closeness between parents and children. Children, teens, and adults that experience emotional incest may struggle emotionally and in relationships with others. Victims of emotional incest learn that their primary role is serving the needs of their parents. This unhealthy dynamic can affect their expectations and behavior in other relationships as they grow older.

Additional adverse impact of emotional incest in children and teens include and looks like. Feelings of guilt or unworthiness.

Feeling responsible for a parent’s feelings. Difficulty making and sustaining friendships. Isolation from others. Conflict or strain with siblings and/or the other parent, Poor self-esteem.

Perfectionism.

These impacts continue or evolve into adulthood.

Being a people pleaser. Lack of self-identity. Fear of rejection. Difficulty maintaining healthy relationships. Fear of getting close to others. Putting the needs of others before one’s own. A strong desire to succeed but sabotage it.

Finding a partner that is similar to one’s parent.

Eating disorders. Drug or alcohol addiction. Sexual dysfunction issues.

In summary, parents aren’t children’s responsibility, it’s the other way around. Children are parents’ responsibility. We not only rob children of a better future when we as parents are unhealth but generations to come.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle for parents is essential for fostering healthy habits in their children and ensuring their long-term well-being.

Honouring Excellence - STEMGuyana celebrates Teacher-of-the-Year Winners and Nominees The STEMGuyana Teacher of the Year Awards were created to shine a light on educators who are making a real difference in classrooms and communities, often quietly, consistently, and without fanfare.

This year, 3,979 people voted, and the $100,000 in prize money was sponsored by Ima, Asha, and Caleb Christian, the co-founders of the organization, who wanted to remind us why teachers remain one of the most powerful forces shaping Guyana’s future.

With 1,428 votes, first place was awarded to Dwayne Daniels, who teaches at Friendship Secondary School in Region Four. Mr. Daniels is a teacher whose work reflects both deep dedication to students and a clear understanding of the demands of a changing world.

For him, teaching is not simply a job; it is an identity.

“Teaching is central to who I am,” he shared, explaining that what drives him each day is “seeing students grow academically and personally.” His commitment to integrating technology into

learning is intentional. He views ICT as a tool to strengthen literacy, deepen critical thinking, and better prepare students for the realities of the 21st century. His guiding principle, “Securing our nation’s future by delivering innovative and effective education to today’s generation,” captures the sense of national responsibility that defines his work. Mr. Daniels will celebrate with a prize of $50,000.

Second place, with 1,143 votes, went to Rayann Halley, an ICT teacher in the primary department at the School of Nations. Ms. Halley’s classroom practice reflects innovation, inclusion, and creativity.

Teaching in a diverse, multilingual environment, she believes technology education must be accessible to all students, regardless of background. She describes teaching as “more than a profession,” calling it “a journey of continuous learning, growth, and self-discovery.”

Her enthusiasm for emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, has helped transform her classroom into a space where curiosity is encouraged and students are empowered to build, problem-solve, and imagine new possibilities. Ms. Halley will receive a prize of $30,000.

Third place was awarded to Sharmala Singh from Lake Mainstay Primary School, who earned 410 votes. Ms. Singh is a teacher, STEM coach, and mentor whose work is deeply rooted in community and care for children.

Her philosophy is anchored in the belief that “every child deserves to feel capable, valued, and supported in the classroom.” Her motivation comes from knowing she can make a positive difference in a child’s life, a commitment she lives out daily through her work in Region Two. Her journey is a reminder that educational excellence is not confined to urban centers but flourishes wherever dedication, service, and belief in children are present. Ms. Singh will celebrate with a prize of $20,000.

These awards are particularly meaningful because the nominations came directly from students. Students identified the teachers who inspired them, challenged them, and believed in them. In doing so, they affirmed a powerful truth: students recognize excellence when they experience it.

STEMGuyana also recognizes the broader ecosystem that nurtures great teaching.

It was encouraging to note the strong representation of nominees from outside of Georgetown, reflecting the Government of Guyana’s commitment to expanding teacher training nationwide. As more educators are trained across regions, opportunities for quality education are becoming more evenly distributed, strengthening communities far beyond the capital.

A special acknowledgment is due to St. Stanislaus College, which fielded the highest number of nominees for the Teacher of the Year Award. Four teachers from the institution were selected as nominees: Rashanna Murray, Melanie Christina Alphonso, Chris Kirshnaram, and Grace Brummell, alongside Shevvon Williams.

This level of representation speaks to a positive and supportive school environment where students feel empowered to recognize and celebrate the educators who shape their growth. It reflects a school culture that values excellence, mentorship, and student voice. STEMGuyana honors teachers because teachers do far more than deliver lessons. Canadian firm says govt. eager to ink mineral agreement for Eagle Mountain gold project …CEO says: “they really want to sign”

Canadian mining firm Mako Mining says discussions are underway with the Government of Guyana to finalise a mineral agreement for its Eagle Mountain Gold Project in Region Eight (PotaroSiparuni).

Speaking during a recent interview on The KE Report, Mako Mining Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akiba Leisman disclosed that senior company officials are currently in Guyana and engaged with government authorities.

“Steve (Parsons), our president, is down at site right now meeting with the government ministry. They have him in a headlock right now because they really want to sign the mineral agreement.

I'm not entirely sure they're going to let him leave the country without that sign,” Leisman said. Mako considers Guyana an e m e rg i n g g o l d m i n i n g jurisdiction, citing a miningfriendly permitting environment and growing foreign investment.

The CEO explained that securing the mineral agreement would be a key step in defining the project's fiscal and social framework.

“That's going to be a good first step in terms of where we are to define the uh the economic parameters of our project and kind of our uh our requirements for community support and things along the way,” Leisman added.

Mako holds a 100 per cent interest in the preliminary economic assessment (PEA)stage Eagle Mountain Project, located in the Mahdia district, roughly 200 km southsouthwest of Georgetown.

The company says the site is currently undergoing engineering, environmental, and mine permitting activities, as it prepares for a full-scale development phase.

The company acquired the project through its 2024 takeover of Goldsource Mines Inc., inheriting a resource base of nearly 1.2 million ounces of gold (indicated) and 582,000 ounces (inferred). The 5,050-

hectare property includes the 4,784-hectare Eagle Mountain project and the 252hectare Kilroy medium-scale mining licence, with two known gold deposits, Eagle Mountain and Salbora, along with several additional exploration targets.

Leisman said the company is preparing to submit its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to Guyana's Environmental Protection Agency early next year. “That dovetails into when we think we're going to be ready to submit our environmental impact assessment, which is likely going to be towards the end of January, maybe slip to February,” he said.

He noted that, once submitted, the company expects regulatory approval timelines to align with its broader development schedule. Mako has previously indicated that, pending approvals, construction at Eagle Mountain could begin in 2026, with first gold production from Phase One targeted for the second half of 2027. A 2024 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for Eagle Mountain Gold outlines that the project can produce 66,500 ounces of gold annually on average for 15 years, Life of Mine (LOM).

“CARICOM cannot continue to operate in this dysfunctional and self-destructive manner,” PersadBissessar said. She highlighted what she described as poor management, lax accountability, factional divisions, destabilising policies, and inappropriate meddling in domestic politics by some member states. The Prime Minister added that the organisation's support for the Maduro regime in Venezuela, which has been accused of human rights violations and threats against CARICOM members, further undermines its credibility.

The Prime Minister insisted that Trinidad and Tobago will put its national interest first, asserting that CARICOM will not determine the country's future. “The citizens of our country will choose our path,” she said, framing the dispute as a test of national sovereignty and regional solidarity.

The statement comes after a public exchange of criticism within Trinidad and Tobago. Former Prime Minister Stuart Young accused Persad-Bissessar of harming CARICOM and undermining bilateral relations with the US, calling her government's handling of the matter “disturbing” and “flippant.”

Former Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Minister Amery Browne echoed the criticism, describing Persad-Bissessar as “unprincipled” and accusing her of using public rhetoric to suppress dissent and evade accountability.

Persad-Bissessar defended her position, asserting that the Trinidad and Tobago government maintains its own independent foreign policy, separate from CARICOM's political ideologies or security and economic policies. Explosion at Good Hope substation responsible for power outage - GPL

The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) on Saturday said that an explosion at its Good Hope substation is responsible for the power outage that left several areas without electricity for over an hour.

In a statement, the organisation said that at around 12:04 hrs a loud explosion was heard at the Good Hope Substation, which resulted in the facility going offline, and causing a system disturbance.

“Upon investigation, smoke was observed emanating from the main breaker panel in the switchgear room. The Good Hope Substation is one of our main substations and serves as an interconnection point with the Sophia and Columbia Substations, facilitating the transfer of power between Demerara and Berbice,” GPL said.

The Good Hope Substation going offline resulted in an instability occurring on the grid, which caused several other feeders to go offline. Restoration began immediately in increments and affected areas had their power restored at around 13:10hrs, with the exception of customers from Success to Hope, East Coast Demerara.

However, efforts are currently underway to repower customers from these areas, which are also supplied by the Good Hope Substation, using alternative sources.

by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips. The commissioning ceremony saw more than 100 passengers boarding the ship for its maiden voyage from Parika to Supenaam.

According to the Department of Public Information (DPI), thousands of farmers and passengers from both Regions Two and Three no longer have to worry about limited space on vessels travelling the Parika-Supenaam route.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, in the presence of government ministers, commissioned the US$5 million vessel into service.

Named after an Amerindian area in Region Eight, the MV Konawaruk 1899 is built to accommodate over 300 passengers, 81 cars and is Guyana’s first modern doubleended ferry.

$136M Digital X-Ray System commissioned at Leonora Cottage Hospital A $136million state-of-the-art digital Xray system was recently commissioned at the Leonora Cottage Hospital, Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara). The new equipment was commissioned by President Irfaan Ali and Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony.

The digital X-ray unit, valued at $53 million, is a high-resolution GE generator FlashPad system. Supporting infrastructure to facilitate its installation and operation was constructed at an estimated cost of $83 million, bringing the total investment to $136 million.

The Ministry of Health in a statement said that the commissioning represents a significant expansion of access to high-quality diagnostic services for residents of Lenora and surrounding communities. The new system delivers advanced digital imaging with AIenhanced performance, improved accuracy, and simplified clinical workflows.

Addressing stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and community members at the ceremony, Dr. Frank Anthony emphasised that the newly installed system ranks among the best globally and is fully supported by critical infrastructure, including a reliable battery system, generator, stable power supply, and modern ancillary equipment.

“This is a very good machine,” Dr. Anthony stated. “We now have the battery system, the generator, the power, and the equipment in place to ensure consistent and reliable service delivery.”

The minister noted that the introduction of in-house digital X-ray services eliminates

the financial and administrative challenges previously associated with outsourcing diagnostic imaging. As a result, costs have been reduced and efficiency within the public healthcare system has been significantly improved.

Dr. Anthony further highlighted the streamlined patient-care process enabled by the new system. Authorised personnel can

“With this new machine, we can now offer X-ray services as part of a true ‘one-stop shop’ for our patients,” Dr. Luke-Blyden said.

“This significantly improves efficiency, convenience, and overall patient experience.”

She also outlined the advantages of digital imaging over the previous analogue system, noting that images can now be

reviewed immediately after they are taken, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment.

“One of the major benefits is that patients are no longer repeatedly exposed to radiation due to retakes,” she explained. “Digital imaging allows adjustments to be made electronically to improve image quality.”

Additionally, the system enables realtime review of images by radiologists and external specialists when required, which is particularly beneficial in emergency situations.

“This significantly expedites diagnosis and treatment,” Dr. Luke-Blyden said.

“Ultimately, this digital X-ray machine represents a major advancement in the quality of care we provide to our patients.”

Community members also welcomed the development. A Lenora resident, Budnarine, praised the government’s efforts, noting that the new service will spare residents the need to travel long distances for diagnostic imaging.

“This is a good thing the government did here today; now we don’t have to travel far to get an X-ray done,” he said.

Similarly, Bibi Yasmin Singh of Zeelugt described the initiative as a positive move that will ease the financial burden on residents who previously had to spend on transportation to access X-ray services at other hospitals in the region.

The commissioning at Lenora follows a similar milestone achieved just last week, when the Minister of Health commissioned a digital X-ray system at the Kumaka Hospital in Region One (Barima–Waini), marking that institution’s first digital X-ray unit.

Whether twinkling string lights, illuminated ornaments, or colourful displays, they are a beloved part of the holiday tradition in Guyana, adding warmth,

While these lights enhance the overall aesthetics of Christmas decorations, it is essential to remember that they are electrical products that must adhere to quality requirements and be used properly.

Decorative lights, like any electrical appliance, can pose risks if they are poorly made, improperly installed, or incorrectly utilised. The Christmas season increases

the danger of electricalrelated mishaps due to the increased use of electricity from string lights and lit ornaments. Recognising this, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) plays a vital role in protecting consumers by enforcing the requirements of the National Standard GYS 232:2017 – Safety for Seasonal and Holiday Decorative Products.

This standard was developed to guarantee that

decorative lighting products meet strict safety regulations prior to being sold.

Decorative lights are evaluated to lower the risk of electric shock, fire, and other risks through stringent monitoring by the GNBS Product Compliance Team.

Only products that satisfy the standard are deemed safe for use by consumers.

The standard also mandates that decorative lights on sale are labelled properly to assist consumers

in making informed decisions. Information to be included on the items include voltage ratings, the manufacturer’s name or brand, the month or year of manufacturing and certification marks attesting to the product’s quality. It is also necessary to provide clear user instructions for correct installation, maintenance, care, and storage.

Additionally, labels on decorative lights must include clear information a b o u t t h e p r o d u c t ’s operation, user maintenance and storage. These guidelines provide a thorough summary of risks to equip users with the necessary information to avoid possible dangers.

With the increased use of decorative lighting during the holiday season, the GNBS remains vigilant to ensure importers, manufacturers, and retailers provide products that meet the requirements of the national standard.

The GNBS would like to urge consumers to purchase standard-compliant decorative lights as they adorn their homes and other places during this Christmas season.

By making this smart and responsible decision, consumers can confidently illuminate and beautify their

spaces in a way that is both joyous and safe for everyone.

In a statement on Tuesday, attorney-at-law Darren Wade said that on November 13, 2025, ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) entered the titled lands of Kanapang without the consent of the Village Council, without a warrant, without notice and without statutory authority, in breach of the Amerindian Act. During the operation, 27 Brazilian men and women were arrested.

Wa d e o u t l i n e d t h a t Kanapang is a legally recognised Amerindian community located within ancestrally and traditionally occupied territory in the North Pakaraimas, Region Eight, along the Ireng River which borders Guyana and Brazil.

He noted that the Brazilian nationals were subsequently taken before the Mahdia Magistrates’ Court and charged with illegal entry, contrary to section 34(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 14:02, and illegal mining, contrary to section 14(1)(a)(ii) of the Mining Act. According to the lawyer, the matter was first heard on November 14, 2025, when pleas were entered, with Continued on page 27 some of the defendants pleading guilty and others not guilty. On that occasion, several defendants were convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

Wade argued that the actions are particularly egregious where prosecutorial authority has not been demonstrated or lawfully established, accused persons were unable to understand the proceedings due to language barriers and the absence of competent interpretation, and custodial sentences of up to six months were imposed in circumstances inconsistent with due process and fair trial guarantees.

As a result, Kanapang Village contends that the State of Guyana has committed multiple breaches of constitutional,

statutory and international law.

These include violations of the right to personal liberty under Article 139 of the Constitution, arising from the unlawful arrest, detention, charging, c o n v i c t i o n a n d imprisonment of the affected persons; a breach of the right to freedom of movement under Article 148 of the Constitution by criminalising the presence and movement of residents within their traditionally occupied and titled territory; and a breach of the right to equality and equal protection of the law under Article 1 4 9 D t h r o u g h discriminatory enforcement of criminal and regulatory laws against residents of an Amerindian community.

The village also contends that there was a breach of the right to the protection of the law under Article 144 (2) b of the Constitution, which provides that every person charged with a criminal offence shall be informed, as reasonably practicable, in a language that he or she understands and in detail, of the nature of the offence charged.

Wade further noted that the defendants are from neighbouring communities on the Brazilian side of the border, whose populations include Amerindians and persons of mixed ancestry with long-standing cultural, familial and economic ties to the territory.

“The criminalisation of their presence and activities within this area further implicates protections under international law, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP),” he said.

According to ECLAC’s data, by 2023, central government interest payments in 23 countries in the region absorbed a larger share of expenditure relative to education, health, and social protection compared with a decade earlier.

Interest payments accounted for the equivalent of 70 per cent of education spending in 2023, up from 45 per cent in 2012. In relation to health, from 61 per cent in 2012 to 86 per cent in 2023, for social protection, interest payments increased from 52 per cent to 57 per cent.

Moreover, growth in Latin America and the Caribbean is expected to remain weak in 2026 amid continued global uncertainty. The region’s Gross Domestic Product is projected to expand by 2.4% in 2025 and 2.3% in 2026, marking consecutive years of growth hovering around 2.3%.

It should be noted that the Caribbean, excluding Guyana, is forecast to grow by 1.8% in 2026, slightly below the pace seen in 2025.

This expansion will largely depend on trends in tourism and construction, leaving the subregion vulnerable due to

its reliance on imported energy, high transport costs, and exposure to natural disasters. By contrast, Guyana’s economy continues to outperform, with real GDP growth projected at 24% in 2026 following 15.2% growth in 2025 and 43.6% in 2024.

Ali dangles $100K payout for all adults in 2026 budget The anticipation of thousands of Guyanese who tuned in to President Irfaan Ali’s more than two-hour national address on Wednesday night ended in disappointment, as it became clear that there would be no cash grant payout for Christmas.

Addressing the nation from the Arthur Chung Conference Centre at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, President Ali spent hours outlining his administration’s vision, policies and plans to a c c e l e r a t e G u y a n a ’s transformation over the next five years. It was near the end of his presentation that he announced provisions would be made in the 2026 national budget for a $100,000 cash grant for every Guyanese citizen aged 18 years and older.

In one of his August 2025 campaign speeches, Ali had hinted that Guyanese could receive another cash grant payout before the end of the year if the People’s Progressive Party was re-elected at the September 1 General and Regional Elections.

In the lead-up to Christmas, expectation among Guyanese continued to grow, with many hoping Wednesday night’s address would bring confirmation of the long-anticipated payout.

Opposition parties, including We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), had also publicly called on the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government to honour what they described as a promise to deliver the cash grant for the holidays.

“We will have a beautiful Christmas. Look at the smile on my face and know that you will have an enjoyable holiday,” Ali had said at the time. Since that statement, many citizens had been anticipating an announcement confirming a Christmas payout. Despite earlier assurances of ‘a bright and happy Christmas,’ no such cash grant for all adult citizens will be paid out during the holiday season.

Notably, under the first Irfaan Ali-led administration a $100,000 cash grant for citizens aged 18 and older was introduced in 2024. That payout continued into early 2025 and benefitted more than 600,000 Guyanese.

“All of this could be lost if we don’t change our mindset and build a more caring and value base society, not a society of want but a society of need, not a society of convenience but a society of structure, deliberate strategies to uphold, uplift and promote each other,” President Ali said.

The President also said that as Guyana transitions to a modern and digitally d r i v e n e c o n o m y. H e announced that over 600,000 Guyanese are now integrated into the country’s financial system. “We firmly believe that everyone should have equal access to participate f u l l y i n o u r e c o n o m y, beginning with the fundamental ability to open a bank account. That is why we drastically simplified the requirement for opening bank accounts,” he told the audience. “These simplified procedures are already in operation. Today, more Guyanese than ever before are part of the formal banking system. In fact, the number of bank accounts has grown by more than 65,000 since 2020,” President Ali said.

Earlier this year, the president called on Guyanese to ensure they open bank accounts, as the

government aims to deliver social cash transfers via the banking system.

Additionally, online banking is operational at four commercial local banks, making the process of creating a bank account much easier, including for those in the hinterland regions. “This is progress in financial inclusion and empowerment that is measurable. The government aims to foster a more inclusive financial system that will empower all Guyanese to access the system and to participate in saving and investment opportunities.

By long-standing constitutional custom and democratic practice, the President’s address outlining the legislative and policy agenda of a new term is delivered at the commencement of Parliament, before elected Members of Parliament from both government and opposition. The address is formally recorded in the Hansard and presented in the presence of the diplomatic corps, the joint services, and representatives of the international community.

“That is the accepted democratic practice in Guyana,” Walton-Desir said.

What is unfolding today, she warned, is a troubling departure from that practice.

Parliament remains effectively paralysed, Guyana has no formally appointed Leader of the Opposition, and yet the President is delivering a speech historically reserved for the National Assembly, outside of it. “Parliament is not a backdrop for executive announcements,” WaltonDesir stressed. “It is the central institution of democratic accountability.”

Throughout Guyana’s history, such addresses have been delivered within the chambers of Parliament, whether or not opposition members chose to attend.

of democratic norms.

Equally alarming, WaltonDesir said, is the silence of the diplomatic community.

There has been no public insistence on the reconvening of Parliament, no call for the appointment of a Leader of the Opposition, and no pressure for the resumption of parliamentary business.

“This silence should concern every Guyanese,” she warned. “We are entering a period where we can no longer assume that external actors will defend our democratic institutions for us.”

According to the Forward Guyana Movement leader, the responsibility now rests squarely on the people of Guyana to safeguard constitutional o r d e r, p a r l i a m e n t a r y democracy and the balance of power. “This is not about political theatre or partisan advantage,” Walton-Desir said. “It is about defending the institution of Parliament itself. When Parliament is sidelined, democracy is weakened — and no nation can afford that.” She concluded with a clear m e s s a g e : G u y a n a ’s democracy cannot be reduced to executive rule by convenience. “Guyana is not a one-party state, and our Parliament must not be treated as optional.”

Back in November President said that Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir was out of the country, and as a result, the meeting to elect a Leader of the Opposition cannot be held until he returns. His comment was made amid threats of legal action from the We Invest in Nationhood ( W I N ) p a r t y, l e d b y businessman Azruddin Mohamed, over the Speaker’s failure to convene the meeting with opposition MPs to elect the leader of the opposition. Speaking reporters President Ali had said: “From what I’ve seen in the news, the speaker is traveling now, so you don’t expect the speaker to convene a meeting while he’s traveling or he’s on his overseas trip. So I’m sure that the speaker and the National Assembly, would convene a meeting at the appropriate time and have that process completed.”

Following the convening of parliament, Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Isaacs explained that while the constitution outlines the

process for electing the opposition leader, it does not specify when the meeting must be held. “The constitution doesn’t say when the meeting is to be held, if it’s at the first sitting or the second sitting or third sitting; it’s at the discretion of the speaker,” Isaacs told reporters.

WIN in a statement following the convening of parliament expressed concern that the Speaker’s silence calls into question the impartiality of the parliamentary process. “This unexplained silence stands in contrast to the Speaker’s public oath to execute the functions of his office ‘without fear or favour, affection or ill will,’ and raises legitimate concerns regarding the impartial administration of parliamentary processes,” the party said.

The party said that while the President was swiftly sworn in following the elections, the same urgency should have been applied to the election of the Opposition Leader. As such, the WIN party further accused the administration of deliberately stalling the process. “The Leader of the Opposition is not symbolic; the Constitution requires that the holder of this office be consulted on major appointments, including the P o l i c e C o m m i s s i o n e r, Chancellor, Chief Justice, and members of the Judicial Service Commission.

Delaying this office undermines the balance of power and signals a disregard for constitutional governance,” the statement added.

Equally disturbing, Duncan added is the complete exclusion of the Parliamentary Opposition from this rollout. “This was not accidental. The structure and staging of the event ensured that the Opposition, elected to represent a significant portion of the electorate, was deliberately locked out of a process that should have been national and inclusive. A Five-Year Agenda that excludes dissenting voices cannot credibly claim to reflect the will or interests of all Guyanese.

While the delayed broadcast is a minor detail, it adds to the overall picture of poor judgment and disregard for democratic norms,” the APNU MP said. “Let there be no misunderstanding: formal and rigorous scrutiny of the Government’s plan will follow shortly, through the appropriate parliamentary and public channels. FRIDAY Govt. vows to stand with U.S. to crush criminal networks - Jagdeo says U.S. wouldn’t tell them of their military plans against Venezuela President Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed Guyana’s full support for regional and international efforts aimed at dismantling criminal activity and protecting peace and sovereignty. The Head of State made the position clear during a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Christmas Luncheon on Thursday morning, where he addressed members of the joint services.

Surrounded by members of the joint services, he explained, “We are living in a period of increasing

We must ensure we are prepared at all times to defend the sovereignty of our country and to join all our partners who work closely with us in such defence and in partnering for a safer world. One that is free from illicit activities. One that is free from all forms of criminality that destroy lives and families.”

To this end, Ali sent a clear message, “Guyana continues to support every effort to end and destroy criminal elements that seek to undermine the peace and destabilize the freedom of our country and our region and our world.”

For him, he believes Guyana is duty-bound to be included in a system and partnership aimed at crumbling “criminal empires”. At the same time, the President noted that peace must be protected.

“That is why Guyana remains committed to strengthening its defence capabilities to maintaining a professional and well prepared defence force and to building partnerships with friendly militaries through defence cooperation and defence diplomacy,” he said.

According to Ali, such partnerships promote confidence, reduce misunderstandings and contribute to regional stability.

M e a n w h i l e , Vi c e President Bharrat Jagdeo shared similar sentiments during a press conference on Thursday at Freedom House, Georgetown. He was asked how concerned Guyanese should be about the potential of a military event between Venezuela and the United States (US) when he highlighted that the President Donald Trump administration has already laid out his objectives for the country’s presence in the region.

“The Secretary of War has pointed out what assets they have in the region, and the purpose of their

presence. President Trump himself has made it clear that he is here to fight drug trafficking,” the VP said as he went on to voice support for these activities.

“We support any fight against drug traffickers. We support any fight against drug traffickers. And we will work with the United States o f A m e r i c a , t o collaboratively, to support all of their activities aimed at blocking illegal drugs from going up to the United States of America, or coming to Guyana,” Jagdeo stated.

The former President was keen to point out that he is unaware of any future military plans the US may have against Venezuela. “If they’re gonna do this, they wouldn’t tell Guyana...and so, I can’t comment on a hypothetical. As far as we are concerned, we have engaged with the United States of America. They have assured us that our sovereignty, they will support us in protecting our territorial integrity and s o v e r e i g n t y, ” J a g d e o outlined.

While Guyana remains unaware of any military action the US may take against Venezuela, Jagdeo n o t e d t h a t t h e Tr u m p government has already assured Guyana that its assets will be protected. He said, “They (the US government) have assured us, however, that the assets, the American assets in Guyanese waters, or Guyanese territory off shore, and our territorial integrity, fully supported by them.”

Last Wednesday, the United States seized an oil tanker just off the coast of Ve n e z u e l a , a n a c t i o n confirmed by President Donald Trump. The vessel had been sanctioned by the U.S., and Trump stated that the oil would be retained by U.S. authorities, according to Reuters reports. In response, the Venezuelan government accused the United States of “blatant theft” and described the

seizure as “an act of international piracy.” The Venezuelan government said it would “defend its s o v e r e i g n t y, n a t u r a l resources, and national dignity with absolute determination” and denounce the seizure of the tanker before international bodies.

The seizure marked the first known action against an oil tanker since the U.S. ordered a significant military build-up in the region. The U.S. has already carried out several strikes against suspected drug vessels, which has raised concerns among lawmakers and legal experts. British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the tanker Skipper was believed to have been seized off Venezuela early on Wednesday. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the tanker for what Wa s h i n g t o n s a i d w a s involvement in Iranian oil trading when it was called the Adisa.

SATURDAY ‘We must plan for possible hostilities as US heats up row with Venezuela’- APNU ...says Govt. hoping to outsource defence As the United States (US) government takes aim at Venezuela to tackle a string of illicit activities, it is incumbent on the Government of Guyana (GoG) to plan for any outcome that can involve hostility.

This is according to the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament (MP), Terrence Campbell. During a press conference on Friday, the

businessman in an invited comment said that the party is concerned about any threat to the region, as a zone of peace, and the risks to Guyana should tensions escalate and the situation becomes more aggressive.

Already, US war officials have held talks with the GoG as the President Donald Tr u m p - l e d g o v e r n m e n t heightens its presence in the region in a move to tackle illegal movement of drugs from the sanctioned state.

In recent weeks, the US conducted several military strikes on vessels off the coast of Venezuela, killing close to 100 already. Only this week the United States military said it killed four people in its latest attack on a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Government officials in Guyana have cited support for the actions by the US which it says is aimed at crumbling a criminal empire.

“We are concerned about any threats to the region, as a zone of peace and we are concerned about the risks to Guyana if there are to be hostilities. In our statement today we highlighted the fact that we have heard nothing really from the government about contingency planning if there will be hostilities,” Campbell noted.

He added, “Those contingency planning relate to our defence posture and our ability to even defend ourselves and also, the crisis that may be caused on our border with migrants pouring over. Already its an issue here in Guyana that has not been dealt with and the reality is that we must plan as though hostilities could take place tomorrow.”

Be that as it may, APNU argued that the government has failed to outline a policy on migration and strategy for defence. The party pointed out that President Irfaan Ali in his recent address to the nation referenced a migration policy but offered no details on enforcement, regularization, labour market impacts, or contingency planning in the context of regional instability. “There was also no credible defence strategy, implicitly suggesting continued reliance on external actors...nothing on details for his new Migration Policy, a policy long overdue and no contingency planning for escalation of hostilities in the region or for the defence of Guyana,” APNU argued.

The party therefore concluded that this is a clear signal that government is hopeful that Guyana’s defence will be outsourced.

Campbell reasoned, “Nobody wants this or must think this can happen but it would be prudent governance from the government of Guyana to be planning as though something could happen tomorrow and we are seeing none of this.”

He stressed that he has not seen a shred of evidence that points to planning for a possible mass movement of migrants across the border.

While he acknowledged that these details would not be publicized, the MP pointed to the importance of these plans being shared in the

Campbell expressed further discontent that the Head of State has not summoned the Opposition faction of the National Assembly on the recent developments to discuss plans.

He was keen to note, “These are not issues that the government should take it on themselves alone to address and to plan.” According to him, this subject requires not only the support of one party, but all of Guyana, including all political groups.

Beyond a Presidential invitation, Campbell was asked whether the Opposition wrote to the Head of State seeking to engage on the subject. As such, he explained, “That issue is being considered by our foreign policy team at the moment.”

US$15M signing bonus by Total Energies paid into NRF The first consortium to seal an oil pact with the Government of Guyana (GoG) under the revised Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) has paid US$15M as a signing bonus into the country’s Natural Resource Fund (NRF).

This is according to the Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat.

In an invited comment, he told Kaieteur News that the entire sum has been deposited into the oil account.

Be that as it may, the Bank of Guyana NRF report for November 2025 does not reflect the US$15M sum. In fact, the report indicates that a mere US$3,750,000 signature bonus was deposited into the Fund that month.

Bharrat explained that the three partners in the consortium made separate payments but assured that the total US$15M signing bonus has been paid. While it is only possible to see the US$3M payment, Bharrat indicated that the balance

could be reflected in the following month’s NRF report, depending on the date of the deposit.

The Minister did not respond to questions on whether the GoG has sight on any specific use for the resources at this time.

On November 12, 2025, the GoG signed a Petroleum Exploration Licence and Petroleum Agreement with Total Energies, Qatar Energy and Petronas for Block S4, a shallow-water concession off the country’s coast.

Total, a French energy giant leads the consortium with a 40% interest in the block, along with its partners, Qatar Energy and Petronas with 35% and 25% respectively. Block S4 spans an area of approximately 1,788 square kilometres, located 50 to 100 kilometres off Guyana’s coast in water depths ranging between 30 and 100 metres.

Under the revised terms, shallow water blocks are subjected to a signing bonus of US$10M, while deepwater areas will attract a higher sum of US$20M. Government was however successful in acquiring a higher signing bonus through negotiations with the consortium.

The oil companies will be expected to pay a 10 percent royalty and a 10 percent corporate tax to the Government of Guyana. In the meantime, the cost recovery will be capped at 65 percent in a given year, while profits will be shared 50/50 between the parties. These fiscal terms vary significantly from the existing PSA enjoyed by ExxonMobil, the operator of the Stabroek Block.

The company pays no taxes but shares 50% profit with government after deducting 75% each month for cost recovery. It also pays a meager 2% royalty to government.

The block, which originally spanned 26,800 square kilometers, does not have a ring-fencing provision.

From where I stand...

Smoke, Mirrors, and the Politics of Performance There is a great deal of performance unfolding in Guyana right now.

On all sides.

I tell myself that politicians will politic; that much is inevitable. There will be posturing, soundbites, carefully framed outrage, strategic empathy, and moments designed for maximum visibility. None of this is new, and none of it should surprise us.

What should concern us, however, is how easily we, the citizens, become absorbed by the performance, mistaking it for substance, the noise for accountability and visibility for leadership.

We are living through a season of smoke and mirrors, where political theatrics dominate public attention while decisions with longterm implications for the country unfold quietly, often without serious scrutiny.

Take the Amerindian Hostel controversy that flared just last week. The issue itself is real.

The conditions faced by Indigenous people who must stay there are unacceptable and deserve urgent attention. That was never in question. What followed, however, was familiar: cameras, confrontation, accusations, counter-accusations, and a public consumed by how things were said rather than what would be done.

And once the dust settled, the most important

questions remained unanswered: what immediate steps are being taken now? What changes will occur beyond the performance? When the cameras are gone, will the lives of the people affected actually improve?

This pattern repeats itself constantly.

On the opposition side, we see energy, clout, and platforms being used to amplify spectacle; from viral confrontations to commentary about the First Lady’s dress and its price tag.

Whatever one thinks about accountability and transparency, this kind of focus does little more than hijack public attention.

Once introduced, it becomes the only thing people are talking about.

The systems that enable misuse of power, weak oversight, and inequality fade into the background.

On the government side, we see a parallel performance, some ministers carefully curating relatability, visibility, and optics, often blurring the line between governance and branding.

Again, politicians will politic. The danger lies not in the performance itself, but in allowing performance to substitute for serious engagement with policy, institutions, and outcomes.

This is not accidental.

Post-colonial societies are particularly vulnerable to

politics becoming spectacle rather than transformation, warns my favourite thinker, Frantz Fanon in The Wretched of the Earth.

Emotional mobilisation replaces structural change, and the people are kept engaged at the level of appearances while deeper realities remain untouched.

That warning feels deeply relevant today.

While public attention is consumed by theatrics, significant developments are unfolding quietly.

Just this past week alone, Guyana signed another oil contract that brought a signing bonus of roughly US$17 million into the Natural Resource Fund.

According to media reports, nearly US$195 million flowed into that fund from oil sales and bonuses, in November, bringing the total balance to well over US$3.6 billion.

At the same time, nearly US$1.8 billion has already been withdrawn this year to finance government programmes.

These are not trivial sums. These are decisions that will shape inequality, development, and intergenerational equity for decades. Yet they rarely dominate public discourse the way political performance does.

S i m i l a r l y, G u y a n a recently signed a Statement of Intent expanding military cooperation with the United States; a development with

serious implications for s o v e r e i g n t y, r e g i o n a l security, and our positioning amid tensions involving Venezuela and broader geopolitical shifts in the Americas. This, too, received relatively little sustained public scrutiny. To date, only a small number of opposition voices have publicly engaged the broader implications of what is unfolding.

These are the moments that require focused attention, thoughtful debate, and a functioning opposition asking hard questions; not just reacting to the spectacle of the day.

Speaking of which, why is Parliament yet to convene to elect an official Leader of the Opposition?

Have we paused to consider what this prolonged absence means for the opposition’s ability to collaborate meaningfully and fulfil its constitutional role of holding the government to account?

And this is where responsibility shifts from politicians to the people.

Leadership, in its truest sense, is rooted in service; in a deep love for people and humanity. But leadership behaviour is also shaped by what we the people reward.

When we reward

performance, we get more performance. When we reward noise, we get more noise. When we allow ourselves to be perpetually distracted, governance continues largely unchecked.

The newly released World Inequality Report reminds us that the world is r i c h e r t h a n e v e r, y e t inequality remains extreme because growth alone does not distribute opportunity.

Without strong institutions, transparency, and deliberate policy choices, wealth concentrates. Guyana, in this moment of rapid growth, sits squarely at that crossroads.

So, the question is not whether politicians will politic…they will.

The question is whether we will discern, dissect, and refuse to be distracted.

foundations of our future are quietly laid? Or will we demand substance behind the show; asking how oil revenues are managed, how inequality is addressed, how security agreements affect s o v e r e i g n t y, a n d h o w governance translates into real improvements in people’s lives?

I am not asking for less performance. I am asking for results. When the cameras turn off and the applause fades, the only thing that matters is whether those elected to lead are actually doing the work they were chosen to do.

From where I stand, the call is not to disengage, but to engage more seriously. To look past the smoke. To recognise the mirrors. And to insist that when all is said and done, what matters is not who performed best but whether the people of this country are actually better served.

Santa’s Sleepy Surprise

t was Christmas Eve night, and Aurora, who was seven years old, was wide awake. She was holding onto her detective notebook and had a flashlight, in addition to wearing some fuzzy socks that somehow made her feel s n e a k y. W h a t w a s h e r mission?

She was going to catch Santa red-handed. Bryce, her little brother, who was five years old, was also wide awake.

Bryce's reason for being awake was much simpler than Aurora's was. “I want to watch him eat the cookies we helped to make,” Bryce whispered gently, taking a peek out from under his blanket. “We made Santa the best cookies. They have sprinkles on them.” Aurora nodded and smiled at her little brother. “We will look at the fireplace. I think that is how he will get into the house.”

“But how will he do that?

We don't have a chimney,” Bryce asked curiously.

Aurora did pause and then respond. “Exactly, this is what makes it a real mystery.

How does Santa get inside each house?”

Both kids decided to tiptoe downstairs, being careful not to make any noise, which would wake up their Mom and Dad. The tree sparkled beautifully in the corner of the living room, and a plate of cookies sat on a coffee table beside a large glass of

milk.

Aurora and Bryce curled up on the couch together, their eyes very wide, with hearts thumping in excitement.

The minutes passed quickly.

Then the time changed into an hour.

Then___ Whoosh!

A swirl of glitter and snowflakes filled the room, and suddenly, standing in front of the tree, was a man in red with twinkling eyes and a snowy beard.

“Santa!” Bryce gasped.

Aurora dropped her notebook.

Santa chuckled. “Well, well. Two little night owls.”

“We wanted to see how you get in,” Aurora said.

“And I wanted to see if you liked our cookies,” Bryce added.

Santa smiled at the children and took a seat in the armchair. “I do love cookies. My favorites are the ones with all the sprinkles on them. I cannot deliver any presents while boys and girls are still awake.”

Aurora made a frown.

“Why not?”

“It is part of the magic of Christmas,” Santa explained. “Gifts only come when kids are dreaming sweet dreams.”

Bryce yawned a bit. “But I'm not sleepy.”

Santa reached down into his sack and pulled out a book. “Then maybe I can read you a story. It will be one that will help your eyes to get heavy and your heart t o

Santa read Aurora and Bryce about snow bears, candy cane forests, a reindeer who wore pajamas, and elves who built notable bedtime forts. His voice was soft and deep, like a lullaby wrapped in peppermint.

Aurora did her best to stay alert, but her eyelids began to droop.

Bryce curled up beside her, his beloved stuffed rabbit tucked under one arm.

Santa closed the book very gently. “Sleep tight, little detectives.”

He then touched each child's head, one by one, and then did a quick wink and a nod. He stood up and vanished into a swirl of glittering snow.

The next morning, Aurora and Bryce woke up in their beds; the cookies were gone, and the milk glass was empty. Waiting under the tree were some presents for them.

Aurora found her notebook lying beside her pillow. Inside it was a note: “Dear Aurora, You're a very clever girl, but I must say, even detectives need their rest. Merry Christmas to you and Bryce. Lots of love, Santa.”

Bryce found a sprinkle cookie tucked inside his stocking.

The boy grinned. “Santa liked them.”

Aurora smiled happily.

“He came.”

And from that Christmas on, the sister and brother always left a book beside the cookies, just in case Santa wanted to read to them again.

I

n this season of Christmas which is so meaningful to Christians, it is very heartening that people of all religions celebrate it, which has been the tradition since our forefathers came to this country from various other places from around the world.

This is just as true for the festivals of the other main religions which are followed by our people, mainly Hinduism and Islam, in so much that most of them have been declared national holidays. In a world where

some feel that religion has been the cause of people being divided in many societies, this must make Guyana unique even at a global level.

Along with the good times that we will personally enjoy and share in this season, it is important that all Guyanese recognise and keep in mind this tradition, and make it one of the reasons that we should use as a means of promoting unity and brotherliness among our people.

During the week leading up to this great holiday, try to contribute to this tradition, so that you will be playing your part, not only to make yourself

satisfied that you are helping your countrymen to become free of all ill feelings towards one another, but to make an impact in this national effort of bringing us together.

The next night, Christmas Eve arrived. The workshop buzzed with excitement. Danny climbed into a tiny special seat right behind Santa. It had pedals, buttons, and a little platform for tapping.

Santa called out, “Reindeer ready?”

The reindeer stomped.

The elves cheered.

Danny bounced in place.

“Danny,” Santa whispered, “start tapping.”

Tap. Tap. Tap-TAP-TAP! The sleigh lit up like a shooting star.

“FASTER!” Santa laughed.

Danny pedaled, bounced, wigglewiggled, and tapped every part of the platform. The Super-Sleigh shot into the sky, leaving a trail of sparkling lights behind.

They zoomed across the world—faster than ever before.

Danny's energy never ran out. The sleigh glowed brighter and brighter as they flew.

“You're doing amazing, Danny!”

Santa called. Danny beamed.

For the first time ever, he didn't feel “too energetic.” He felt… just right.

By the time they returned to the North Pole, Santa lifted Danny onto his shoulder and announced: “This Christmas, we were powered by the one and only Danny the Elf—who couldn't sit still, and saved the night!”

The elves cheered.

Danny bounced happily.

station, where smoke was observed emanating from the transformer panel. It said a technical team was immediately dispatched to investigate the root cause of the disturbance, which was reported to be a damaged cable.

As a precautionary measure, the damaged cable was then isolated to allow the safe restoration of power. Immediately restoration began in an incremental manner and continued until all the affected areas had power restored sometime around 00:30 hrs on Wednesday.

Hours later, on Wednesday at approximately 11:19 hrs., the 69kV line linking the Edinburgh and Vreed-enHoop substations tripped while transmitting approximately 15 megawatts (MW) of

power.

“The sudden loss of generation caused a cascading effect across the grid, resulting in service disruption to customers in Demerara and Berbice. Teams were instantly dispatched to determine the reason for the disruption. It was determined that the disruption was due to the movement of heavy machinery in close proximity to the transmission lines.”

However, within 30 minutes of the outage, power was restored to some communities and full restoration followed in a 90 minutes period after. In this light, the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation said it continues to work with the Guyana Power and Light Inc. to maintain reliable supply of electricity.

Gratitude, Presence, and Purpose C

hristmas is one of those seasons that invites us to pause. Amid the lights, the music, the shopping lists, and the celebrations, there is a gentle call to slow down and reflect on what truly matters. Beyond the beautifully wrapped gifts and carefully planned outfits, Christmas is, at its core, about love. Love for God, love for one another, love for our environment, and love for ourselves.

As the year draws to a close, I often find myself reflecting not just on what I have accomplished, but on how I have shown up in the lives of others.

Have I been present?

Have I invested my energy wisely? Have I given love generously? These questions feel especially relevant during the Christmas season.

As we reflect during this time, many of us experience an emotional roller coaster.

Joy, gratitude, longing, and quiet reflection often exist all at once. It brings to mind a quote I created that continues to guide me: “Guard your emotional currency wisely; invest it in people and moments that enrich your soul, and never spend it where it's not valued.”

Christmas reminds us that our emotional currency, our time, attention, kindness, and compassion, is one of the most valuable gifts we possess. While material gifts may fade, depreciate, or be forgotten, the way we make people feel can last a lifetime.

In a world that moves quickly and demands so much of us, being present has become one of the rarest and most meaningful gifts we can give. Sometimes the greatest present is simply our presence.

Sitting at the table, listening without distraction, sharing a meal, or checking in on someone who may be struggling silently.

As families gather around Christmas meals, it is worth remembering that not everyone has abundance. If you have a little extra, consider sharing. Take a plate of food to a neighbor who may be unwell, elderly, or going through a difficult season. Invite someone who might otherwise be alone to share a

meal. These simple acts of kindness reflect the true spirit of Christmas.

This season can also be bittersweet as we remember loved ones who are no longer with us. We honor their memories by carrying their love forward and holding space for gratitude, even in moments of loss.

Over the years, through the Sonia Noel Foundation, we have made it a tradition to give back during the Christmas season by hosting feeding programs for individuals e x p e r i e n c i n g homelessness.

Each year, these moments remind me that love in action speaks louder than words. I cooked the pepperpot myself and served it with bread and coffee to those experiencing homelessness, offering the simple dignity of choice, coffee with milk or black.

Sometimes, a smile and a genuine conversation become the most powerful gifts of all, affirming our shared humanity.

Christmas is also a sacred reminder of God's love for humanity. The birth of Jesus represents hope, h u m i l i t y , a n d unconditional love.

Scripture tells us, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is love.”

— 1 Corinthians 13:13 Love is not passive. It is active. It is seen in how we care for our environment, how we treat strangers, how we show up for our communities, and how we steward the blessings we have been given. Whether it is choosing more sustainable options, reducing waste, or being mindful of how we consume during the holidays, love for the environment is also an extension of gratitude.

Of course, Christmas is also a season of celebration, and fashion plays a joyful role in how we express ourselves. Clothing is more than fabric. It is storytelling. It is how we show up confidently at family gatherings, church services, festive lunches, and relaxed Boxing Day outings.

For the holiday season, think effortless elegance and comfort. A flowing dress in breathable fabric, a relaxed two-piece set, or a beautifully tailored casual

MSF urges Israel to let critical aid into Gaza as children freeze to death At least 13 people in Gaza, including two-weekold and one-month-old babies, have died from winter weather and a lack of adequate shelter and aid – blocked by Israel.

Aljazeera - Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, has warned that babies and children in the Gaza Strip are dying from harsh winter weather, calling on Israel to ease its aid blockade as the military continues to violate the ceasefire and press on with its genocidal war.

Citing the death of a 29day-old premature baby, Said Asad Abedin, from severe hypothermia in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, MSF said on Friday that winter storms “combined with the already dire living conditions [are] increasing health risks”.

The death toll from extreme weather stood at 13 as of Thursday, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Another two-week-old baby, Mohammed Khalil Abu alKhair, froze to death without access to proper shelter or clothing earlier this week.

Ahmed al-Farra, head of the maternity paediatric department at Nasser Medical Complex, said in a video update that “hypothermia is very dangerous” for babies. “If nothing is offered for these families in the tents, for warming, for mobile homes, for caravans, unfortunately, we will see more and more” deaths, al-Farra said.

Children are “losing their lives because they lack the most basic items for survival,” Bilal Abu Saada, a nursing team supervisor at Nasser Hospital, told MSF. “Babies are arriving to the hospital cold, with neardeath vital signs.”

In addition to the growing number of deaths, MSF said its staff has recorded high rates of respiratory infections that it expects to increase throughout the winter, posing a particular danger to children under five.

“As Gaza is battered by heavy rains and storms, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians continue to struggle in flooded and broken makeshift tents,” the organisation added. “MSF calls on Israeli authorities to urgently allow a massive scale up of aid into the Strip.”

On Friday, an Israeli strike on a shelter for displaced Palestinians killed at least six people. The Israeli military claimed to be firing on “suspects”.

Graphic videos from the scene showed body parts and terrified civilians trying to carry wounded people out of danger. Military vehicles also descended upon the town of az-Zawiya, located west of Salfit in the occupied West Bank, where forces severely beat and injured a number of citizens and stormed homes, the agency said. ‘I can still hear his tiny cries’ Heavy rain, high winds and freezing temperatures have battered Gaza in recent weeks, flooding or blowing away more than 53,000 tents that have served as makeshift shelters for displaced Palestinians.

She and her husband couldn’t find transportation to get to hospital, and intense rain made it impossible to make the trek by foot.

After rushing Mohammed by animaldrawn cart to Red Crescent Hospital in Khan Younis at dawn, he was admitted to intensive care with a blue face and convulsions. He died two days later.

“I can still hear his tiny cries in my ears,” Eman said.

“I sleep and drift off, unable to believe that his crying and waking me at night will never happen again.”

Mohammed “had no medical problems,” she added. “His tiny body simply couldn’t withstand the extreme cold inside the tents.”

Since the October 10 ceasefire took effect, Israel has continued to block the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip despite calls from a host of United Nations agencies, international organisations and other states for it to stop.

The UN has said that Israel has prevented tents and blankets from reaching Palestinians, even as an estimated 55,000 families have seen their belongings and shelters damaged or destroyed in the storm.

Dozens of child-friendly spaces have also been damaged, affecting 30,000 children, according to the UN. Natasha Hall, a senior advocate for Refugees International, told Al Jazeera that aid is entering Gaza in a “trickle” in part due to its opaque list of “controlled dual-use items” that has included nappies, bandages, tools, tents and other essentials.

“It’s unclear how those could be used as weapons or any kind of dual use,” Hall said.

U.S. seizes oil tanker off Venezuelan coast, officials say Dec 20 (Reuters) - The United States has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela in international waters, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Saturday, a move that comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a "blockade" of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

This would mark the second time in recent weeks that the United States has seized a tanker near Venezuela and comes amid a large U.S. military build-up in the region.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the Coast Guard seized a tanker that was last docked in Venezuela.

"The United States will continue to pursue the illicit movement of sanctioned oil that is used to fund narco terrorism in the region," she said in a statement posted to social media. "We will find you, and we will stop you."

Three U.S. officials earlier Saturday had told Reuters that the vessel had been seized.

The Coast Guard and Pentagon referred questions to the White House, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Venezuela's oil ministry and state oil company PDVSA did not immediately reply to requests for comment British maritime risk management company Vanguard said the vessel was believed to be the Panamaflagged Centuries, which was intercepted east of Barbados in the Caribbean Sea. "The seizure of a vessel that is not sanctioned by the U.S . m a r k s a f u r t h e r increase in Trump's pressure on Venezuela," Paner said. "It also runs counter to Trump's statement that the U.S. would impose a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers."

TRUMP CALLS FOR 'COMPLETE BLOCKADE' Trump on Tuesday said he was ordering "A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela."

In the days since U.S. forces seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela last week, there has been an effective embargo in place, with loaded vessels carrying millions of barrels of oil staying in Venezuelan waters rather than risk seizure.

Since the first seizure, Venezuelan crude exports have fallen sharply.

While many vessels picking up oil in Venezuela are under sanctions, others transporting the country's oil and crude from Iran and Russia have not been sanctioned, and some companies, particularly the U.S.' Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab, transport Venezuelan oil in their own authorized ships.

China is the biggest buyer of Venezuelan crude, which accounts for roughly 4% of its imports, with shipments in December on track to average more than 600,000 barrels per day, analysts have said.

The dark or shadow fleet is considered exposed to possible punitive measures from the U.S., shipping analysts have said.

Centuries, which loaded in Venezuela under false

name "Crag" and is part of the dark fleet, was carrying some 1.8 million barrels of Venezuelan Merey crude oil bound for China, according to internal documents from state oil company PDVSA, the oil's seller.

The vessel departed Venezuelan waters on Wednesday after being briefly escorted by the Venezuelan navy, according to company sources and satellite images obtained by TankerTrackers.com.

The crude was bought by Satau Tijana Oil Trading, one of many intermediaries

involved in PDVSA's sales to Chinese independent refiners, the documents showed.

As of this week, of more than 70 oil tankers in Venezuelan waters that are part of the shadow fleet, around 38 are under sanctions by the U.S. Treasury, according to data from TankerTrackers.com.

Of those, at least 15 are loaded with crude and fuel, it added.

Trump's pressure campaign on Maduro has included a ramped-up military presence in the

region and more than two dozen military strikes on vessels in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea near Venezuela, which have killed at least 100 people.

Trump has also said that U.S. land strikes on the South American country will soon start.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has alleged that the U.S. military buildup is aimed at overthrowing him and gaining control of the OPEC nation's oil resources, which are the w o r l d ' s l a rg e s t c r u d e reserves.

Chase’s Academic ready to defend KFC Goodwill title - St Benedict’s also confident of a championship win

h e K F C International G o o d w i l l Football final is here, and the stage is set for an exciting showdown. Trinidad’s St Benedict’s College and Guyana’s RBL League c h a m p i o n s , C h a s e ’s Academic Foundation, will meet tonight for the 2025 title, with both teams entering the final unbeaten.

Yesterday, the Petra Organisation hosted the two finalists at the KFC Vlissengen Road office in a customary exercise to mark the opening of the grand finale. KFC Chief Executive Officer Paul Subryan met with the two captains, Bryan Wharton (who has been cleared to play tonight) and S t B e n e d i c t ’s c a p t a i n Malachi Fraser.

The two teams have met four times previously and are therefore familiar with each other ’s playing styles.

During the face-off exercise, both captains expressed

confidence ahead of the final.

So far, the finalists have showcased strong defensive units along with several prolific goal scorers within their squads, making this final an even bigger battle for the title.

St Benedict’s captain Fraser indicated that his team will approach the match aggressively, noting: “This final means a lot to us. We have been playing well over the past few days, and if we turn up with the same level of fight and flair, we can come away with the win. Winning this tournament would definitely be a great accomplishment for us as a team.”

Meanwhile, Wharton is confident that Chase’s Academic Foundation will successfully defend their title, stating: “I think the boys are ready for the challenge. We have been playing well as a team, and at this time our only aim is to defend our title and show the

rest of the region that Guyana has good talent.”

The tournament concludes this evening at the Ministry of Education ground, with the grand finale scheduled to kick off at 8:00 pm. Prior to the final, fans will also be treated to a matchup between Kingston College of Jamaica and Nickerie Technical Institute of Suriname. In a special announcement, Narada Wilson revealed at yesterday’s faceoff that the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) will earn the opportunity to train and play with a professional club in Brazil.

The three-month stint is designed to aid the player’s development as they transition into senior football.

It is reported that he is unwell and as teammate after team-mate came in ahead of him, it is starting to look serious enough to prevent him from batting.

principles might have come in handy to recognise that he could leverage his strength, scoring square of the wicket, into runs, “Plan your work, work your plan,” he said at the end of the day on 109 not out.

Hodge looked suspect initially, surviving outside edges through the slip cordon and berating himself about his front foot’s reluctance to get in line with the ball. But none of that deterred him from doing the basics right; from being ready for the next ball; from gaining better awareness of his off stump. With more and more time in the middle, he was able to get his body moving the way he wanted.

The strength of his defence began to shine through – soft hands, bat face pointed down to make sure the ball didn’t reach the close catchers – and the bowlers began looking elsewhere. Hodge punished them for their lack of perseverance, playing some of the most crisp pull shots. The early struggle and the method to get out of it made the final yield all the better.
