As July winds down nearly half of summer already gone, Stephanie and I participated in the Run, Jump, Throw of the National Coaching Certification Program which is building fundamentals and transitioning into modern sports mirrored in the actions of Track & Field. This was a beginner course to coaching and instructing development of motor skills in the areas of Running, Jumping and Throwing. We explored technical progressions, safety, risk management and ethical decision making; all represented as foundation pieces for proper instruction and coaching to ensure the well-being of participants of all ages. We have enjoyed days in the sun with Indian Baseball, entered a 10 and under team for the 3rd Annual Tsakis F.C. 7 Aside soccer tournament over Filomi Days weekend. Days relaxing at the Pond.

TREATY UPDATE Hello community members! Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather -- berries seem plentiful and large in size this year!

Here is the July update on our treaty negotiations: On July 3 and 4th we had our monthly scheduled Main Table negotiations during a trip to the Homelands of the ‘Nakwaxda’xw. We stayed overnight at the float camp in Warner Bay hosted by Cindy Browne with the help of Dorothy Walkus. Our skipper on the 12-passenger boat, Gordies Girl, was Adam Munn. The trip and the stay were very much appreciated by all in attendance, the 3 federal negotiators of Canada, the 5-person provincial negotiation team, Hereditary Chief Tom Henderson, Chief Paddy Walkus and myself. Of the many years that we have been involved with the BC Treaty Commission negotiations this was the first time the negotiators of Canada and BC saw a portion of our homelands first hand. The weather was a gusty northwester travelling in and out but did not impact our ability to travel all the way to the head of Seymour Inlet, into the two ‘legs’ of Frederick Arm and back down to Warner Bay and out to the Queen Charlotte Sound. We hope to take the negotiators to view other portions of Seymour Inlet as well as Smith inlet in the next while.

At this juncture of negotiations, BC is still “statusing” all of our territories, by this I mean that they are evaluating/assessing all the land to determine who has “title” a “tenure” or other type of use and ownership on the “crown lands”. After all of the statusing is complete, they will make an “offer” to us, based on the treaty selections that we have put forward. Following, we will negotiate to get what it is that we want/need to support our community into perpetuity. As mentioned during community meetings held, we will retain full ownership of those portions of land and will negotiate to maintain our title and management over the rest of the Gwa’sala‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations territories outside of the treaty selection areas. Of special interest to our leaders is access to viable forest to fulfill our community housing needs. We not only need good cedar to build houses, we also require wood to sell to purchase other materials to build houses that are not wood, such as the gyprock, taps, counter tops, etc. To do this we are seeking areas within our territories that can provide trees needed at the least amount of cost to harvest. To find necessary trees we negotiated a forestry Treaty Related Measure (TRM) grant to study our forests. The resulting study will create a “Total Chance Plan”, which will give us necessary information as we seek to address housing and economic development needs on behalf of the community. It is expected that the study will be completed by the fall of this year. The study will also offer opportunity to community members to apply for employment positions that will come available in August or early September. Another initiative we are working on at this time is to provide an opportunity for youth to travel and work at the Homelands for a period of time PAGE 5

GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS

this summer. The initial project, under supervision of Hereditary Chief Tom Henderson, is to go to Deserters Island to brush and weed whack the old village site to make it more accessible for Elders and community members to visit. As well, the four youth will help Tom to renovate the steps, the porch and inside of the cabin that he and community members built more than 15 years ago. They will also work to clear and plant grass seed at a potential field. On time off, youth will get to do some traditional food gathering such as berry picking and halibut jigging.

As a wrap-up to this report, I want to emphasize the importance of us finding ways to effectively manage and control our own lands and natural resources. We have bountiful resources that are sought after by large corporations, i.e. forest companies, fishery companies, biology consultants, the outside governments, etc. We say we want to see things done sustainably, to achieve this we need to do our own training and management– we have many capable people that can help to train and to sustainably manage the territories of the GN Nations. If we do have to outsource contractors, they must be required to train our members to do the jobs they were hired for. We need to empower ourselves to make decisions about our own future. Chief Willie Walkus, Treaty Team member was unable to make the trip to the Homelands, he was missed. Gilakas’la!
