West Center is GVR’s customer service and entertainment hub. The 500-seat auditorium hosts dances, performances, comedies, tribute shows, and more. It also includes an art gallery, wood shop, billiards, lapidary, six tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, a large swimming pool with lap lanes, spa, three meeting rooms, GVR Artisans’ shop, and a full-use kitchen.

Wonderland Golf Cart Parade and Social Hour
Celebrate the season with a winter wonderland golf cart parade! Cheer on festively decorated golf carts cruising around West Center in a display of holiday spirit. Ceramics Beginning
This class is a prerequisite for joining the Ceramics Club. Students learn how to prepare greenware and bisque, apply undercoats and glazes, and other techniques. Students complete three projects, included in the material fee, to take home. Students must be able to attend all classes. Bring an apron to protect clothing.

Introduction to the Clay Studio
This class is required for Clay Studio membership. Participants must attend all sessions to join the studio. Dichroic Glass Jewelry
BEGINNING LEVEL — Students complete three pieces of fusible dichroic glass. Pieces may be used for pendants or earrings. Felt Magic — Fundamental Felt Making
In this introductory felt class, students learn to manipulate and embed fibers and silk fabric, and understand how and why wool grabs and has a shrink factor. Not every sheep grows the same quality wool. Some are better for garments while other are best as a rug or art vessel. Participants determine the difference between the wools and determine the shrinkage factor. This technique opens the imagination and instills a new sense of creativity with this medium. Felt: Wet Felted Bowl
This class intrigues even the most cautious artist. The mystery of interlocking wool fibers with other fibers into a bowl-shaped vessel pushes the creative spirit. Students learn the shingling technique of layering fibers to keep the vessel sides even while using the shrinking characteristic known to wool fibers. Color theory is discussed and applied to the project. Participants are encouraged to cut into the vessel to reveal colors placed on the inside. West Coast Swing is a partner dance rooted in Lindy Hop, renowned for rhythm and musical expression. WCS is danced to jazz, foxtrot, rock and roll, and more. Improv is a large part of this fun, dynamic dance. Wear non-stick, non-marking, smooth-soled, non-marking shoes. Couples only.
Prerequisite: Beginning West Coast Swing (WCS) Part I. Learn more fun moves to add to the WCS repertoire. Add more pizzazz and refinement to the style and cover the dance floor. Learn the Latin extravaganza of dance! Each week, participants learn a new style of dance such as Cha-Cha, Rumba, and Salsa. The final week is a Latin mix dance of all styles. Each of these dances have unique personalities to them. Dance and have fun! Wear nonstick, smooth soled shoes. Couples only.

Line Dance for Dabblers
No pre-requisites, no experience needed. Students learn basic beginner-level line dances in this casual introduction meant to build confidence and spread the joy that line dancing brings. This class strengthens and tones the body with lowimpact exercises that are gentle on joints. Through a mix of classic dance moves, students enjoy a fun workout that increases mobility in knees, hips, and shoulders. Step Interval
This class mixes step aerobics with weight training segments throughout the hour. The workout is packed with high energy fun and burns lots of calories. Modifications are given during the class—no need to use the step platform. The class finishes with abdominal work and a nice stretch. This program gives students the full body workout and condition to stay strong, fit, and healthy. Bring a mat, good athletic shoes, and water.

Stretch, Strength and Stabilize
Learn specific exercises to promote whole body bilateral correction and alignment, and establish functional strength and balance. Participants are likely to learn some anatomy too. Look to create a practice that helps eliminate body pains, stiffness, and chronic pain from injuries and postural issues. The instructor is certified as an Egoscue posture specialist and a massage therapist with over 30 years of experience. Total Body Conditioning
This fun and challenging class is designed to increase cardio endurance, body flexibility, muscle strength, and practice better balance in a full body workout. Students use several bands and bodyweight for resistance. Exercises are lowimpact to make it easy for students with joint replacements and arthritis. Students must be comfortable standing for 60 minutes and coming to the floor for the cool down exercises. This easy/medium/difficult workout can be adapted to many different fitness levels. Safe fitness and fun for all. Wear stretchy comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Bring a water bottle, one exercise band with handle, a stretchy band without a handle, and a mat for floor work.

Sound Healing with Biofield Tuning
Biofield tuning is a form of sound therapy that uses tuning forks to bring participants into deep relaxation, releasing stress and tension. Tuning forks are used to introduce pure tones and frequency to bring one’s energetic field (or aura) into coherence. A more coherent energy field promotes emotional, physical, and spiritual health and wellness. Sessions start with a discussion about biofield tuning, followed by a brief meditation, and the tuning.

Open the Door to Tai Chi
The class introduces a gentle practice of Tai Chi, the Yang 6 style, derived from a martial arts fighting style originating in early China. Tai Chi is an internal martial art that unifies the body and the mind with natural energy, the chi. Students focus on each form, as well as connections between these forms, while calming the mind by incorporating natural breathing. The Tai Chi 24 Yang Form can be further studied by joining the GVR Tai Chi Arts Club.

Shotokan Karate
Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art in which students learn to use hands and feet as weapons. Tai Chi Basics for Better Balance
Basic moves and principles of Yang Style Tai Chi are introduced to develop an individualized exercise program for people with balance issues due to Parkinson’s, post stroke, Meniere’s, etc. Participants practice some standing, stretching, and slow moving. Pickleball 101
Pickleball 101 is an introductory class for beginners. The method of instruction focuses on safety first by providing a proper progression for the participant to be successful and confident in a safe environment. Students are introduced to the following technical skills; serves, return of serves, ground strokes, volleys and dinks. These specific skills are incorporated into game related skills to assist the student in making good decisions on the court. The fourth-class session, at the discretion of the instructor, may be a mock tournament. The instructor provides participants with a skill level recommendation at the completion of the class. Proper court shoes/tennis shoes are required to participate. Paddles are provided.

Pickleball 201
Prerequisite: Participants must be a 2.5 or better or completed Pickleball 101. Emphasis is on the third shot, drop, lob, or drive, and knowing when the serving team would execute each of them. Proper footwork and drills to improve footwork along with paddle control are introduced so participants improve on being more intentional with ball placement. Another focus is the utilization of deep serves and returns.

Pickleball 202
Prerequisite: Participants must be a 2.5 or better or completed Pickleball 201 or Pickleball 101. This class focusses on review and progression of the third shot, (drop, lob, drive) depending on the serving team zone. Players develop a better understanding and be more consistent on which shot to use as the serving team advances to the no volley zone. Additional skills are introduced such as dink volley, volley, punch volley, offensive lob, and the overhead smash. Footwork, paddle control, placement, positioning, and team strategies are also addressed.

The system is predicated on setting up partners for success. The Perfect Four is introduced with emphasis on best ball placement for success and winning points. Dinking strategies, reset triangles, serving zones and return of serves are incorporated, emphasizing shot selection and ball placement. Yin Yoga
The essence of Yin Yoga is to surrender and be passive in poses. By popular demand, this class is now 90 minutes instead of 75. The focus is on postures that release tightness in the muscles surrounding the hips, shoulders, and back. Students typically hold postures for three to five minutes, which helps lengthen the connective tissue around the joints and increase its elasticity. Those with medical restrictions have many options guided by an experienced instructor. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle, yoga mat, two yoga blocks, yoga straps, Mexican blankets, and an optional bolster.

Yoga Saguaro (Hatha) Level I/II
This mixed-level yoga class is open to all experienced yoga practitioners. It is eclectic, mindful, and invigorating, with an emphasis on breathing techniques and exploring traditional yoga poses. The class includes sun and moon salutations, followed by a combination of balance, standing, and seated poses, twists, backbends, and some inversions. The instructor has been at GVR since 2009 and is a retired Arizona high school teacher who has been instructing yoga since 2004. He is certified and registered annually as an E-500 RYT through Yoga Alliance. Please bring a firm yoga mat, two four-inch blocks, two Mexican-style firm blankets, and a yoga strap (available for purchase from the instructor).

Chair Zumba (Seated Zumba Gold)
Chair Zumba (seated Zumba Gold) is a dance party sitting in a chair. This class is designed, but not limited, to students who may not be able to comfortably participate in standing aerobics or exercise for any reason (i.e., balance, joints). All ability levels are welcome. Students increase activity, muscular strength, endurance, balance, mood, improve joint range of motion, and cardiovascular system—all in a safe, inviting, light-hearted, and upbeat environment. Creating Your Memoir—A Writer’s Workshop
Want to turn your life’s story into a memoir? This class guides students through creative non-fiction techniques, memoryjogging writing exercises, and examples from some of the world’s greatest writers. Students are given short writing assignments as homework and have the opportunity for the writings to be critiqued by classmates and an English professor. Is It Too Late to Become a Goddess?
Only women over 50 should enroll. Regardless of time or culture, women inherently carry the goddess gene, which can either fully manifest or be pushed aside and devalued. From Athena to Wonder Woman, they are mothers, mentors, and guides. Goddesses are not myths but personifications of feminine energy potential. New Class. Indigenous cultures used the medicine wheel as a template for the sacred cycles of life. Small Group Training Options
Introduction to Resistance Band (Beginner)
Resistance band training is a low impact, safe, and efficient way to build strength, improve flexibility and support balance without weights. The class is oriented toward seniors who have recently done little or no regular exercise. Small group training allows each person to get individualized attention, and all the equipment is provided for class. Wear loose clothes, sneakers, bring water, and please arrive 20 minutes early for the first class.

This class is designed to build on the skills introduced in the beginner resistance band training class. Parkinson’s Functional Fitness
Research shows that exercise and physical activity help maintain and improve mobility, flexibility, balance, and quality of life, as well as manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This training program consists of functional movements that target different aspects of fitness, such as high intensity interval training, resistance, flexibility, and balance training. Additionally, the program includes non-contact boxing exercises. There is no onesize-fits-all when it comes to exercise and Parkinson’s disease.

Boxing is a highly effective exercise for Parkinson’s disease. It improves handeye coordination, balance, and agility through a blend of cardio and strength training. This therapy uses modified, no-contact boxing techniques to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Free Personal Training Options
GVR offers fitness training options to help members get the most out of their fitness center experience.
1. Attend a free fitness center orientation at the facility you plan to use for your workouts. This session includes a tour of the cardio and strength training equipment and a group orientation on the adjustments and proper use of the machines. Schedules and registration information for orientations are posted in each fitness center and at GVRec.org. Registration is mandatory
2. Try a 30-minute personal training consultation with a GVR personal trainer. It’s available to members with a customized fitness program tailored to goals and medical needs.
3. Book a 30-minute introduction to resistance band training. This exercise style is a fantastic way to stay active and strong. Learn to use resistance bands to enhance the functional movement patterns of daily life. Demonstrations will show how to train push, pull, press, squat, hinge, and lunge movements that are convenient, versatile, and joint-friendly. Benefits of this type of training include improved strength, balance, endurance, coordination, mobility, core stability, and flexibility.

Meet Your Personal Trainers
Fitness Program Design $129
Program Design is aimed at members who want to learn to train on their own, but want guidance to move in the right direction safely and effectively.
Unfortunately, bodies change with age, and this can have an impact on function and mobility. Range of motion, balance, coordination and muscle strength can deteriorate over time.
For $129, you receive two, one-hour consultations that will set you up to execute a six-week, individualized training plan on your own.
The consultations include:
• complete assessment
• prime and prep warm–up
• corrective exercise strategies
(as needed)
• strength training prescription, and
• cardio prescription
Participants walk through the details of the program and are provided with appropriate form, reps, tempo, sets, and rest periods. The workout schedule is in six-week cycles and based on individual preferences: two-day splits, three-day splits, four-day splits. The goal is to have members become confident and self-sufficient in their quest to reach personal goals.

Jaymon specializes in strength training and confidence building. He played college baseball at Minot State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in corporate fitness. Outside the gym, he coaches high school baseball in Tucson. Whether in the gym or on the field, Jaymon is passionate about helping others reach their goals.
Suzanne Polzin
Suzanne has been teaching group fitness and personal training for thirty years, working in sports rehabilitation clinics in Southern California, and with Fit-Center doing specialized training for stroke and brain-injured clients. Suzanne is a motivator who challenges clients to meet their goals.
Allan Carter
Allan specializes in functional fitness, exercise therapy, senior fitness, and nutrition. He has helped many 55+ clients overcome disabilities and injuries and is passionate about helping the senior community achieve their health and wellness goals.
Shaun McGuire
Shaun, a certified personal trainer with a doctorate in chiropractic, has trained University of Arizona and Olympic athletes. He specializes in functional movements and bodyweight exercises. As a nutrition expert, Shaun has taught college courses, deepening his knowledge of the digestive, immune, and metabolic systems. He’s eager to help members achieve their fitness goals.
Jeanie Cooper
Jeanie holds a BS in Nursing and an MS in Exercise Physiology, with 25 years of nursing experience. She specializes in pre-op and post-op joint replacement, osteoporosis, cancer rehab, and heart disease exercise strategies. Jeanie enjoys working with clients both one-onone and in small groups.
Daniela Cawthorne
Daniela has over 20 years of experience in training and teaching various fitness classes. Her expertise spans functional fitness, yoga, Pilates, and strength training. Passionate and enthusiastic about health and fitness, Daniela enjoys working one-on-one and with small groups to help clients achieve their goals.
Complimentary Yoga
This complimentary class introduces members to the practice of yoga. Perfect for both beginners and those looking to renew their practice, it covers basic foundational postures to align, strengthen, and promote flexibility. Students learn breathing techniques and meditation. The class moves at a slow pace to help participants build a strong yoga foundation in preparation for GVR’s advanced specialty yoga courses.
Mats and yoga blocks are available, but students are encouraged to bring their own. A Mexican-style blanket is recommended but not required.

How to Register for Classes and Purchase Event Tickets

Students may register for classes and purchase tickets online, by mail, by phone, or in person at GVR’s West Center Box Office. Early registration is encouraged to prevent cancellations due to low enrollment. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express).
Do not send cash through the mail. If your mailed registration is for a full class, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if a spot opens. Attend class only after receiving registration confirmation.

All sales for event tickets are final. If a performance is canceled, refunds may be issued. We will make every effort to reschedule any canceled performances.
CLASSES
If you are unable to attend a registered class, please notify GVR as soon as possible so we can accommodate members on the waiting list.
Refunds are issued if you cancel your registration at least five business days before the class starts. No credits or refunds will be given for cancellations made less than five business days before the course start date.
Drop-in Policy for Classes
GVR may cancel classes due to low enrollment, instructor illness, or other unforeseen circumstances. If your class is canceled, you will be notified promptly and can choose to register for another class, receive an account credit, or get a refund.
For online registrations, the class fee will be refunded (excluding the service fee).
If you paid by cash or check, you will receive an automatic account credit for future GVR purchases. If you prefer a refund, please contact customer service at 520-625-0288. If you paid with a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express, you will receive a credit on your card. Please allow up to fifteen business days for processing
Drop-ins depend on class enrollment and are not accepted in full classes.
