THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY “Black Friday” The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office.

In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees.

Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.

Chicken and Black Bean Chili Serves 6 to 8 1/2 cup olive oil or vegetable oil, divided 11/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 to 3 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 2 cups diced yellow onions 1 cup seeded, diced poblano chiles 1 red bell pepper, diced 3 canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, minced 1/4 cup minced garlic 1 14.5-ounce can black beans 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes 2 ears corn, kernels cut from the cobs Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 ripe avocado, halved, pitted, and diced 1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered 1/2 red onion, diced 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, minced Tis the Season

www.portpocketsanddeli.com 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice 2 jalapeno chiles, seeded and minced 11/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 cup crumbled Mexican cotija cheese 1/2 cup grated mixed cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses Heat 1/4 cup of the oil in a heavy-bottomed, 8-quart pot over medium heat. Add the chicken, chili powder and cumin seeds and saute until the chicken is cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes.

Transfer the meat to a bowl and set aside.

Return the pot to the heat, add the remaining 1/4 cup of oil, and cook the yellow onions, poblanos, bell pepper, chipotles, and garlic, stirring frequently, until the onions start to brown. Stir in the beans with their liquid, tomatoes and corn and return the cooked chicken with all its juices. Turn the heat down to low and simmer, stirring every 5 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and tender, about 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

In a large bowl, combine the avocado, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, lime juice, jalapenos, and salt. Set aside.

To serve, ladle the chili into bowls and top with the salsa and the cheeses.

Wassail can be made in many different ways, depending on one’s tastes. But cider is an integral ingredient in most wassail recipes. Home cocktail creators can use this basic recipe and modify as they see fit.

HOMETOWN SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY + CYBER MONDAY CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history.

Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.

Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky.

While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Doctors tried an electrical cardioversion, but it came back after a few days. She is taking metoprolol and Eliquis. We have read about the supplements red clover, turmeric, omega-3 and hawthorn. Should she discontinue the pharmaceuticals and take supplements instead? -- J.C. ANSWER: Please don’t do that, and let me explain why.

Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm. The goal of treating it is first to relieve symptoms, such as fast heart rate and dizziness, and second, to reduce the risk of stroke. Blood clots can form inside the heart when the atria are fibrillating (a chaotic, non-coordinated muscle movement). Those clots can break off and go into the blood vessels of the brain, causing cell death and loss of function in that part of the brain. That’s a stroke.

Your wife is taking metoprolol to slow the heart rate.

Atrial fibrillation causes the ventricles to go too fast, causing a sensation of fast heart rate and palpitations.

Metoprolol, a beta blocker, protects the heart from damage from a too-fast heart rate, in addition to relieving symptoms. Apixaban (Eliquis) is a powerful anticoagulant, reducing the risk of clot formation.

Red clover is usually used in herbal medicine for its estrogen-like activities. Unfortunately, estrogens INCREASE clot risk, so this herbal medicine absolutely should not be used by someone at risk for clots. Sweet clover hay is the source of warfarin (Coumadin), another often-used anticoagulant in people with atrial fibrillation: This may be the source of confusion. However, warfarin needs to be dosed precisely, with frequent blood-level checks.

Turmeric is an antioxidant that does have some mild anticoagulant properties. However, it is not remotely powerful enough to do the job of protecting your wife adequately from stroke.

Omega-3 fish oils were once thought to reduce risk of atrial fibrillation; unfortunately, a 2013 study showed no benefit.

Hawthorn has two potential benefits: To a slight extent, it acts as a beta blocker (like metoprolol) as well as an anticoagulant. However, no trials have proven its effectiveness. It may interfere with both her medicines.

The metoprolol and Eliquis have much more safety data.

DEAR PAWS CORNER: Help! Our recently adopted dog “Mollie,” a medium-sized mixed breed, thinks the doggie door flap leading outside to the backyard is delicious. Rather than using it to go in and out, she grabs the edge, chews and tugs on it. She growls when she does this.

And she insists that we open the back door for her to go out. How do we fix this? -- Mary T., San Antonio DEAR MARY: You’ll need to address this in two steps. First, you need to figure out if Mollie is chewing due to boredom or attention-seeking, or if she has separation anxiety due to trauma in her past. If she’s only chewing on the door flap and nothing else in the house, maybe there’s an old memory surfacing.

Second, you’ll need to repair or replace the damaged flap and train Mollie to go in and out of it confidently.

Here are a few methods: 1. Divert and distract: As soon as Mollie starts trying to chew the door, call her name to stop her and then distract her away from the door with something else that interests her, like a favorite toy or a treat.

2. Behavior training at the same time each day: Note when Mollie is most likely to start chewing on the door. Then, conduct 10 minutes of behavior training in basic commands.

3. Train Mollie to use the flap correctly: Once she’s responding well to basic commands, add “going thru the flap” to her training. Good news!

In response to “Where are we headed” here is some good news. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.6% and 531,000 jobs were added in October! The infrastructure bill passed by both Democrats and Republicans last week will be adding millions of new jobs, and we will all benefit from repaired roads and bridges, lead free water lines, increased broadband and improved train travel.

All those new jobs are certainly good news! I’m not sure where you shop, but I’ve found everything I need at all the main grocery stores in our area, both national chains and local grocers. If you’re finding bare shelves, perhaps you should try a different store or try purchasing online.

There is little anyone can do about gas prices which fluctuate up and down based on the price of crude oil which is controlled by the global market. We all received help from our federal government during the COVID-19 shutdown, and we are still receiving it. I see much to celebrate! Also, it’s 61 degrees with sunshine in mid-November! Smile!

Wow! That is not what our democracy or this country was built on. We had one of the greatest nations on earth because of our republic and the open exchange of ideas and ideologies, but we should all be extremely concerned as to where our United States of America is heading. Our politicians could use a vaccine that would cure their cruel and bitter criticism!

Foreign Radio Stations and Language Lessons Here we are, still stuck mostly at home for another winter. Looking for ways to get out, even if it’s only mentally, I’ve discovered internet radio.

It’s easy to get started. I went to Radio.net (with 33,000 stations around the world) and on a whim I typed in Ireland for a search function. That got me 15 stations in Ireland. I tried Canada, and that netted me 44 stations.

Searching for France, I found 798 stations. I went with a French talk show aimed at seniors and have been able to test the free French lessons I’ve been taking online with Duolingo.

If you get hooked on listening to the radio on your computer, you might consider investing in a good pair of speakers. I prefer the wired speakers, as opposed to struggling with Bluetooth connections, and a decent set can be had for less than $25. I’m still using a pair of 3-inch cube speakers with a very handy volume button that I purchased seven years ago.

As for the free French lessons on Duolingo (duolingo.com), I’ve decided to start again at the beginning. There are four goal levels: casual, regular, serious and intense, meaning 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes per day of instruction. Now that I’ve found that French talk show, not to mention all the other 797 French stations, I’m going to get more serious about learning French.

RESILIENCE: A TIMELY THANKSGIVING TRADITION

Browning leaves of red, orange, an gold rustle as they are and bl blown by breezes that bite, an the palest of frosts and appear overnight only to ap melt away at sunrise. me Throughout the country, families are preparing to fa gather over tables full of turkey, squash and stuffing, carrots and cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes and marshmallowed yams, plump biscuits, and pumpkin pies. Thanksgiving Day has arrived, wafting in on mouthwatering [turkey] wings. Amid an ongoing pandemic, it is time to find gratitude once again.

This Thanksgiving, after “two weeks to flatten the curve” became nearly two years of riding the rollercoaster, there is a strain which can be felt. Almost two years of pandemic pressures, economic challenges, political conflicts, and semi-isolation have left their mark. Pandemic realities continue to shape our everyday lives; whether long-term or short-term remains to be seen. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, perhaps it is time to expand our focus from simple survival to include how we will survive.

Thanksgiving Day itself is a holiday born and baptized in adversity. Its inception took place among those Pilgrims who survived their first year upon New England shores: only 51 of the Mayflower’s 102 passengers and about half the crew. It was proclaimed and celebrated on the heels of the American Revolution, when President George Washington declared Thursday, November 26th, 1789, to be “a Day of Publick Thanksgivin.” It rang out over the fierce battles of the American Civil War in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln issued a declaration asking that all citizens observe “a day for National thanksgiving, praise, and prayer.” Finally, in 1941 as World War II raged on, Thanksgiving Day was established by the Congress of the United States as a national holiday to take place each year on the fourth Thursday of November.

During the Spanish Flu pandemic, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Royal S. Copeland was faced with many difficult—and at times controversial—decisions while working in the interests of public health. In one of his letters, he wrote, “When the history of the influenza in America is written, you will not be ashamed of the care afforded to this metropolis.” Dr. Copeland’s ability to imagine a point after the pandemic in which the pandemic itself was in the past is both striking and key. Dr. Copeland understood that the Spanish Flu pandemic would become a chapter in American history…and it has.

One day, whether one month, one year, or five years into the future, the Covid-19 pandemic will be a chapter in American history. Will we be able to look back and say that we are not ashamed of how we cared for each other, of how we treated others in restaurants and grocery stores, on “It is time to social media and within our families?

A gratitude lifestyle has been found to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and blood cortisol levels, increase feelings of well-being, and strengthen one’s ability to cope with challenging situations. This Thanksgiving season, consider taking some extra time to reflect on those blessings which mean the most to you. As you gather with family and friends, whether in person or virtually, share these blessings with each other and experience resilience through gratitude. After all, it’s a Thanksgiving tradition.

A common thread even more meaningful in the light of our present pandemic is the human resilience at each of these points in time as well as the decision to give thanks. Merriam-Webster has defined “resilience” as “the ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens.” If that doesn’t sound like a post-pandemic prescription, I don’t know what does!

Merriam-Webster also defines “resilience” as “the ability of something to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed, bent, etc.” For many, the last two years have left us feeling all of the above! Yet, it is this elasticity we so desperately need right now. It is one’s ability to endure extraordinary difficulties and challenges and yet remain the same sort of person they were before. Surviving this pandemic has been our necessary focus for so long; however, what can we do to ensure the “us” that survives is who we want to be?

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
