TEAM STATISTICS

GAME NOTES

QUITE FRANKLY

St. Bonaventure forward Frank Mitchell has been a star through eight games, averaging a career- and team-best 16.0 points as well as 10.4 rebounds per game.

As of Monday (Dec. 1) only two players in Division I are averaging at least 16.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game: preseason All-American JT Toppin (Texas Tech, 22.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists per game) and Mitchell.

Mitchell leads the Atlantic 10 conference in rebounding, is tied for fourth in blocks (1.4 per game) and ranks eighth in scoring. He also leads the league in field goal percentage among players who have 100-or-more shot attempts on the season at 54.2 percent (58-for-107).

The Toronto native has five double-doubles on the season, which leads the Atlantic 10 and is tied for third-most nationally. Heading into Wednesday’s game, Mitchell has posted a double-double in

two straight games, recording 17 points and 12 rebounds against East Carolina (Nov. 27) before posting 13 points and 11 rebounds at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 30).

Mitchell is no stranger to the top of the national leaderboards. In 2023-24 with Canisius, he ranked fourth in the country with 11.6 rebounds per game.

The senior’s rebound percentage of 18.4 and offensive rebound percentage of 14.2 are both on pace to be the highest in a season in St. Bonaventure history.

COUNT ON CAYDEN

Cayden Charles gave the Bonnies a huge boost in their win at Florida Atlantic on Sunday (Nov. 30), scoring a team-best 16 points and grabbing five rebounds. It was the second time this season that he has led the Bonnies in scoring.

Charles has reached double figures in six of St. Bonaventure’s eight games, all six of which have been wins. He has scored 15-ormore points in four games, trailing just Buddy Simmons II and

Mitchell (each with five) for the third-most games over 15 points on St. Bonaventure.

The North Georgia (Div. II) transfer went 7-for-7 from the free throw line on Sunday. He has not missed a free throw in four straight games, going 13-for-13 during that stretch.

Charles has made a team-best 35 free throws on the season, more than double the nearest St. Bonaventure player (Simmons II, 15). He has accounted for 36.4 percent of the Bonnies’ 96 made free throws through eight games.

Defensively, Charles has also been extremely reliable, leading the Bonnies with 15 steals to this point. He is recording a steal on 3.5 percent of defensive possessions this season, which would be tied with Melvin Council Jr.’s 2024-25 steal percentage as the highest in St. Bonaventure history.

BONNIES OFF THE BENCH

Several Bonnies have stepped up off the bench in several of St. Bonaventure’s wins. In five of SBU’s seven victories, a player has reached double figures off the bench.

In Sunday’s win at Florida Atlantic, Achille Lonati shined with 13 points while shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. On Thursday against East Carolina, Daniel Egbuniwe had a season-high 17 points, shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range.

THE NERD CORNER

In the first NET rankings published by the NCAA on Monday (Dec. 1), the Bonnies ranked 91st. St. Bonaventure was one of eight Atlantic 10 teams ranked in the top 100.

Last Sunday’s win at Florida Atlantic was considered a Quad 2 win, the Bonnies’ highest rated win of the season so far.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Barr-Buday averaged 9.3 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 81.3 percent from the field, helping the Bonnies to a pair of wins over Radford and Valparaiso last week. In Wednesday’s matchup against Cleveland State, Barr-Buday chipped in 10 points and two rebounds on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in 11 minutes off the bench. In Saturday’s win over Valpo, BarrBuday scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down four rebounds, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor in 11 minutes.

Mitchell was a dominant force over the Bonnies’ trip to Florida for three games last week, nearly averaging a double-double of 16.0 points and 9.7 rebounds.

Against nationally ranked North Carolina, he put on a show in front of a national TV audience with 18 points in 31 minutes of action, adding six rebounds and two assists along with a block and a steal.

On Thanksgiving Day vs. East Carolina, he was key to a Bonnies win with 17 points and 12 boards and Sunday at Florida Atlantic he was clutch again in a victory as he produced 13 points and 11 rebounds for another double double.

He posted a 50 percent shooting percentage for the week as well.

The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL for the week ending Nov. 30 are women’s basketball redshirt freshman Brianna Barr-Buday and men’s basketball senior Frank Mitchell.

BONNIES BASELINE

The Hometown Product

Most players who don the St. Bonaventure basketball colors gain their first introduction to the Bonnies from watching a game on TV or getting a call from the coaching staff.

For Bonnies junior guard Jack DeRose, however, some of his earliest childhood memories involve cheering on the team from inside a raucous Reilly Center.

The Olean native remembers watching Andrew Nicholson and the 2012 Atlantic 10 championship team as a kid and gaining a love for the game of basketball from a standout generation of Bonnies players.

basketball and have a passion for St. Bonaventure.”

As the Bonnies were enjoying success on a yearly basis, DeRose modeled his game after some of his favorite Bonaventure players.

His continued development on the basketball court led to an integral spot on successful Olean High teams. He became a First Team league all-star as a junior and senior, averaging 16 points per game and earned recognition on the Big 30 First Team.

“My core memories were Marcus Posley, Jaylen Adams, Matt Mobley,” DeRose says of a memorable Bonnies group during his middle school days. “The triple OT game vs. Davidson (in 2018) might be the best basketball game I’ve ever watched. That’s what really made me love

In 2022, his Huskies squad captured the sectional championship.

“We all grew up playing basketball together. We had a special bond,” he said of that team. “It taught us about working hard and understanding the value of teamwork.”

Along the way, he set the Huskies program record for 3-pointers in a single game, sinking a dozen in a contest.

During his high school career, DeRose looked for a way to continue his future in basketball.

“Growing up here, I wanted to represent my hometown and my community. Coming here to walk on was the best way to do it,” he said. “I love basketball and wanted to be a part of something special.” Continued on Page 16

BONNIES BASELINE

DeRose gained a spot on the Bonnies roster as a preferred walk-on prior to the 2023-24 season. As a freshman, he saw time in five games.

The life of a Division I basketball walkon isn’t always a glamorous one: while it doesn’t often result in many minutes of action in games, the work is the same as any member of the roster. It involves a daily grind that is always about putting the team above self.

“Practice is like our game. I do the best of my ability to make our guys better in every way possible,” DeRose says. “The day-today doesn’t change from a walk-on to a scholarship player. The work that goes on behind the scenes, there’s so much more that goes on that people don’t think about. We were here all summer practicing five days a week; in the fall we practice twice a day and lifting. There’s so many hours that go into it. It’s a full-time job.”

appreciate every moment of.

This past postseason, DeRose had his own March moment. He tallied his first career points with a threepointer off the bench during an NIT contest, to the delight of those in an arena he’d spent so much time in growing up before countless hours of work out of the spotlight.

That work makes the moments where he is able to step on the court on gameday stand out as opportunities to

“It was somewhat bittersweet because of the outcome of the game, but that was the moment where it all came into perspective,” he said. “I came here growing up, going to the games and to finally score in this building in a setting like the NIT, that was a moment I’ll never forget.”

A finance major, he knows his unique perspective of being able to watch the Bona coaching staff work each day will help should he stay involved in the game post-college. Regardless of where his career path leads, the road from Reilly Center bleachers to the court has brought an unforgettable ride for the hometown Bonnie.

“I have a lot of pride in the opportunity to wear the Brown and White,” he said. “I’m forever grateful. I wake up every day and put on that jersey and know I’m super blessed.”
