The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines.Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Stay Calm to Foil Scammers
This is a new scam, but then it’s what we expect from thieves -yet another way to steal from us. This one involves our innocentseeming bank debit card, a scammer and a pair of scissors. Here’s how it works:
You’ll get a call from someone claiming to be from your bank who says there is fraudulent activity happening on your account, and they need your help. You’ll be told that you need to act fast before you lose all your money.
The scammers will tell you to cut up your debit card, but not to cut up the little microchip on the card. Put all the pieces, they’ll say, in an envelope and leave it at your door, because a bank “official” is going to rush over to take possession of the evidence. Oh, and there will be one last little detail they’ll need -- your bank PIN. By that time, if you’re sufficiently rattled, you’ll willingly tell them the number.
A scammer will quickly show up at your door to grab the envelope. Armed with that little card chip and your PIN, they can quickly empty your account.
The key is for you to not get rattled, to not let scammers direct your actions.
If you’re suspicious about any call, hang up! It’s OK (even preferable in this case) to be rude! Call the bank or company on their official number and ask if they were trying to contact you about fraudulent activity on your account.
If your debit card (or any card) expires and the bank or company sends you a replacement, cut up the old one. Be sure to cut through the chip, the magnetic strip on the back and the numbers as well as your name. Divide them up in multiple trash bags to keep the pieces apart
Remember: Stay calm to defeat the scammers.

For more than half a century, the Macedon Food Pantry has played a quiet but essential role in supporting families facing hardship in the Macedon and Walworth communities. Founded in 1973, the pantry was created to assist those experiencing challenges such as loss of income, illness, fear of eviction, andfoodinsecurity.Today,thepantry remains a dependable resource, continuing its mission through the dedication of volunteers, the support of St. Patrick’s Church and the broader St. Katharine Drexel Parish, and a longstanding partnership with
Volunteer coordinator Elizabeth Hoteling notes that the pantry depends heavily on community involvement. “Many of the food pantry’s volunteers are members of the parish, others are local residents who help stock the pantry and hand out food when the pantry is open Fridays and the first and third Saturdays of the month,” she says.
She adds that about 25 people volunteer each month, and that “some of them have been volunteering at the food pantry for 30 years. ey are dedicated to helping food insecure residents in Macedon and Walworth.”
at dedication also fuels one of the pantry’s most enduring traditions: the Macedon Community Christmas Program. Now celebrating its 42nd year, the program began a er the Social Ministry Committee recognized the continuing needs of pantry clients. Over time it has grown to include a anksgiving initiative as well, added 18 years ago.
In 2024 alone, the Christmas program assisted 153 families in Macedon and Walworth. Each family received food for a holiday dinner and 180 children within them received gi s to unwrap, 18 older teens received gi cards, and 96 seniors received gi cards.
e program is guided by the Social Ministry Committee of St. Katharine Drexel Parish, including Chairperson Lucille Hamlin, Secretary Heather Keenan, Volunteer Coordinator Elizabeth Hoteling, Provisions Coordinator Denny Marker, and members Linda Brongo, Louise McGuire, and Jean Beha.
For many of these volunteers, the work is both personal anddeeplymeaningful.CommitteememberJeanBeha, who has helped with the Christmas Program for more than 15 years, says, “Our faith calls us to help, love and serve one another. It is such a blessing to be able to share our time and resources with people that need a little help. e gratitude expressed by our recipients makes it all worthwhile. As St. Francis said, ‘In giving, we receive.’”
Longtime volunteer Linda Brongo echoes that sentiment. A er more than 25 years supporting the pantry, she remains motivated by a simple desire to serve her community. “It [means] a lot to be able to make a contribution, and help those in need, right here in our town,” she says. e pantry supplements its Foodlink supplies with donated funds used to purchase items such as milk, cheese, butter, and toiletries, necessities not covered by SNAP. Contributions come from private donors, churches, scout troops, schools, and local businesses, especiallyduringtheChristmasseason.Volunteersalso take pride in the sense of fellowship that develops as theyworktogether.Keenannotesthatfamiliesreceiving assistanceo enextendthatsamespiritofcaretoothers, making sure neighbors without transportation are not le behind.

‘Lactose Intolerance’ Proves To Be A Casein Sensitivity
DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife believed that she had lactose intolerance. After some tests, it was found that she was sensitive to casein rather than lactose. Are there other things in cow’s milk besides lactose and casein that people are sensitive to? -- K.A.
ANSWER: There are three main components of cow’s milk that can lead people to having a bad reaction.
Lactose is a type of compound sugar called a “disaccharide,” which includes two separate single sugars (“monosaccharides”) -- glucose and galactose -- that are connected by a chemical bond. This chemical bond is broken by a specific enzyme called lactase. Deficiency is rare in children but common in adults, especially in people with ancestry from Asia and Africa, as well as Native Americans.
Without the ability to break lactose into its component monosaccharides, a person is likely to get abdominal cramps, gas and diarrhea if they consume lactose. This is because lactose passes into the colon, where colonic bacteria will digest the lactose and produce gas (as well as discomfort). There is a wide variety in the amount that people need to consume to have symptoms, with some people being exquisitely sensitive and others needing a fair amount of it to develop symptoms.
Milk allergies are different. Eighty percent of adults with cow’s milk allergies are women. Cow’s milk allergies are most commonly due to the protein casein (the “curds” of the nursery rhyme) but may also be due to whey protein. People who are allergic to whey protein often have less symptoms if the protein is heated or cooked (for example, milk in baked goods) or if it is changed by digestive enzymes, as in yogurt.
Cow’s milk allergies can have various symptoms. They can be serious and cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. But they may also cause symptoms that people might not recognize as a food allergy, such as skin changes, symptoms of the mouth and esophagus, and food- and exercise-associated anaphylaxis. Some people develop eosinophilic esophagitis, which can resemble gastroesophageal reflux disease; this causes heartburn that doesn’t respond to the usual treatments.
This is only a brief overview of a complicated topic that generally requires an expert in allergy and immunology to help diagnose and manage the condition.

ANSWER: Stenosing flexor tenosynovitis, aka trigger finger, is a common issue that I see very frequently in my clinical practice. Symptoms usually start with some “catching” or locking of the fingers while flexing and extending one or more of them. This may progress to discomfort or pain, and it can progress to the point where a finger or thumb is locked in place and needs to be bent by the other hand.
Initial treatment includes rest and anti-inflammatories. Some experts use a splint to reduce the trauma from repetitive movement in the pulley system of the hand. If conservative treatment isn’t effective, most hand experts will try an injection of a steroid into the area of the pulley and tendon. Surgery is an option if two or three injections haven’t solved the problem. Q. Q. A. A.

Many of our favorite foods at Thanksgiving and Christmas contain ingredients that are poisonous to dogs and cats. Holiday gatherings with lots of family and friends can be really stressful for them, too. -- Larry in Secaucus, New Jersey
DEAR LARRY: You’re absolutely right, and thank you for sending this reminder along. Dogs and cats alike will be attracted to all of the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen this week. Turkey, gravy and lots of side dishes will smell irresistible.
But owners should know that it’s not just chocolate that is dangerous for pets to ingest.Onions,garlic,chives,avocados, grapes (and raisins) can all be deadly. Sugar substitutes, especially xylitol, are also very dangerous. Coffee and caffeinated drinks, like chocolate, contain a chemical that causes illness, seizures and even death. Here are some ways to keep your pet safe during holiday preparation and gatherings.
• Create a safe space for your pets: a quiet room away from all the bustle and noise. Fill it with their favorite toys, food and water, and a cozy place to curl up and relax. If you crate your dog, place their crate in this “safe room” a few days before the gathering.
• Wall off the kitchen: Put up baby gates in front of each entrance while you’re preparing food.
• Keep a close eye on pets: Have a family member monitor your pets while preparations are underway.
• Give them attention and cuddles. Before and after the big gathering, spend time with your pets. They’ll settle back into their home routine afterward much more easily.
