Hats Off To All e Local Peaceful Protesters
Hats off to all the local peaceful protesters who gathered April 5th to express concerns about disruptions to federal programs such as Social Security, Medicaid, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Veterans Affairs, and the Affordable Care Act.
Music has a big impact on my life. And all it takes sometimes is a simple thought or word or phrase, and I’ll start singing, mostly in my head, but also out loud, a song that matches the idea. Carly Simon’s “Anticipation” comes to mind for this time of year .... the advent of Spring. Sing along!
be experiencing a higher volume of calls all at the same time? Alexander Graham Bell is rolling over in his grave right now.
PSA: STOP signs mean you come to a complete stop before proceeding when it’s your turn to go. It seems most drivers consider STOP signs as YIELD signs instead. I’ve almost been hit by numerous drivers just gliding through. Sure, some slow down a bit, but it seems brakes are not even applied. Please stop at STOP signs.
Why does a local restaurant bother to stay open? The hours are never the same, they close in the middle of the day. We have driven 20 minutes to find it closed. The food is very good, prices are fair. BUT, they aren’t going to make it if this is a routine.

PRATTSBURGH, NY:
Bruce Harold French, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Prattsburgh, NY, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
Bruce was born on October 26, 1948, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Harold and Elsie French. One of four children, he moved with his family to Candia, New Hampshire, in 1955. There, he grew up and attended Manchester Memorial High School.
Bruce graduated from the University of New Hampshire and went on to complete Officer Candidate School, launching a distinguished career as a pilot in the United States Air Force. Bruce flew both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, most notably the C-141 transport plane. He served his country with honor and distinction, earning numerous military decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal and two Air Medals. Following his first retirement from the Air Force, Bruce and his wife, Marjorie, moved to Prattsburgh, NY, where they began restoring an old farmhouse. He found joy in the beauty of the Finger Lakes region, where he indulged his love for the outdoors—hunting, fishing, and swapping stories over a game of cards. Bruce was also a devoted fan of all Buffalo and Boston sports teams.
In 2001, Bruce returned to active duty, serving an additional four years with deployments to Iraq andAfghanistan.Heretiredasecondtimein2004, leaving behind a legacy of service, and dedication.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marjorie French; his sister, Suzanne Marmuscak; two brothers, Tom (Diane) French and Mark French; two sons, Nathan (Linda) French and Matthew (Cama) French; and four beloved granddaughters: Courtney, Vivian, Marina, and Amelia French. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Bruce cherished his family above all, and he took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

What to know about hospice at home e philosophy behind hospice is that people should be able to live as fully and as comfortably as possible through the last days of their lives, surrounded by loved ones and friends. Hospice treats the symptoms of illness rather than trying to be curative. Hospice also does not try to postpone nor accelerate death.
e American Cancer Society says hospice care is offered by a team of professionals who work together to manage distress, symptoms and spiritual issues. Services also are offered to family members, including access to counselors and bereavement experts. Hospice workers help family members make decisions and plan care. Hospice is a form of care, rather than a place. Saying a person is going into hospice means he or she will begin to receive this type of palliative care. While hospice can take place in a center that only offers this type of service, a hospice team can work in a variety of settings, including one’s home.
Many people receive hospice care at home. VNS Health provides care in spaces patients call home and says that hospice care can include administration of medications, arrangement of equipment (like beds and oxygen) and visits from a hospice care team. A hospice team may include nurses, social workers, physicians, therapists, and even clergy who come to the home to offer support and care.
Home hospice care begins with a team member visiting with a terminally ill person and his or her family. During a visit, needs will be addressed and the hospice team can arrange for desired services.
Members of the hospice staff will visit regularly to check up and make sure that any symptoms are under control.
Families are urged to do their homework to find the best program for their needs.

Writing a Sympathy Card
An authentic handwritten message can mean a lot to someone dealing with grief. It shows that you’ve sat down and thought about it as opposed to buying a pre-written card. Sharing fond memories and sincere feelings is a respectful way to remember the passing of a loved one and to offer condolences to their friends and family. If you’re able to offer support, then definitely mention this in your sympathy card. ose grieving will o en have lots to do and will appreciate any help you may be able to offer even if they don’t take you up on it.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In honor of her memory, we ask that instead of sending flowers, you perform a random act of kindness. Do something meaningful for someone else without expecting anything in return. Spread compassion, share kindness, and create a positive impact in this world in her honor.

Maple syrup comes in different colors - There are four grades of color for maple syrup that also are known as classifications: golden, amber, dark, and very dark. The colors develop as the maple harvesting season progresses. Golden syrup is produced from the sap collected at the very beginning of the season. Dark maple syrup is produced later and very dark comes last.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an adventurous Shorthaired Pointer named “Gordie” who loves running through the woods behind my home while I walk behind him. He occasionally comes back with scrapes and cuts. I want to share with your readers how I take care of his minor injuries, and when a vet visit is necessary.
Most of the time, Gordie’s scrapes are very minor. I always check him when we get back to the house, because he can easily pick up ticks, too. I remove any clinging ticks and kill them right away. I check the pads under his paws, and run my hand along his coat to remove burrs. If he has a scrape on his side or paw, I clean it with warm water, disinfect it and put some antibiotic ointment on it. If it’s a place where he can scratch or lick, I cover it with a gauze bandage for a couple of days.
Last month, Gordie limped over to me with a deep laceration on his left front paw pad. Fortunately, we weren’t far from home. I carried him inside and gently looked at the injury. It wasn’t bleeding too badly, but the cut was very deep, and trying to clean it was very painful for him. This time, we had to see the vet. I wrapped his paw in gauze to protect it and off we went. The vet stitched him up, and Gordie has to wear a lampshade collar for the next week or so to let it heal.
I hope my story will be helpful to readers. -- Tyler N., Dracut, Massachusetts DEAR TYLER: This is very helpful! Best wishes to Gordie for a speedy recovery.

About a
DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting.(It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired,so I had to find another one. Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it,then ordered a scan. This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy. It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. -- F.B.
ANSWER: Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.
Q.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old woman who received the original Zostavax vaccine around 2010. Then, when the newer, improved Shingrix vaccine became available, I was given the two-shot series in 2019.
Feeling quite confident that I was well-protected, I was shocked when I was diagnosed with a very painful case of shingles in September 2021, followed by postherpetic neuralgia that lasted for six months. I have heard that shingles can recur, sometimes more than once. My question is, should I get Zostavax again in the hope that it will maybe protect me this time around? -B.K.
ANSWER: You did everything right to prevent shingles but still got the infection and its complication, which doesn’t seem fair. Fortunately, this is a rare situation. Recurrent shingles happens more commonly in people with immune deficiency, women, and older adults. Anyone at risk for HIV should consider getting an HIV test if they get shingles or recurrent shingles.
A.
The live Zostavax vaccine is no longer available in the United States, even though it is available in many other countries. Still, I don’t recommend it as the protection from the vaccine is not long-lived.
There are no strong data in getting another dose (or more) of the Shingrix vaccine in your situation, but you could discuss it with your doctor. Another option is having an available supply of antiviral medicine such as valacyclovir (Valtrex) to use as soon as another recurrence happens.

Avoid peak hours: Book a reservation before peak hours so everyone can relax and take their time. Also, choosing a day of the week other than Friday, Saturday or Sunday also may mean smaller crowds and less wait time to receive food.

ALL YOU NEED FOR A MEMORABLE NIGHT OUT
Don’t hype things up: Labeling a night as the “best night ever” or a “party to remember” can quickly tamp down the fun in a flash. It’s best to let the fun develop organically rather than putting a bunch of labels or expectations on the event.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
“If you pull all the way into your garage, tack some carpet scraps to the wall that you pull in toward. It will protect the wall’s paint, and it will protect your car’s bumper if you accidentally rub the wall.”
