Farfalle with Crabmeat, Asparagus, Scrambled Eggs, Garlic, and Herbs Makes 4 to 6 servings 1 pound farfalle 1⁄2 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally, 1⁄4-inch thick 10 extra-large eggs 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1⁄2 pound cooked lump crabmeat, picked over to remove any bits of shell or cartilage 1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the farfalle and cook until al dente, following the manufacturer’s suggested cooking time. About 2 minutes before the pasta is done, add the asparagus.

Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until slightly frothy. Set aside.

When the pasta and asparagus are done, drain and set aside.

Immediately melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the pasta and asparagus and toss briefly to coat them with the butter mixture. Pour in the eggs, add 1⁄4 cup Parmesan and the cream, and stir and toss the mixture until the eggs just have begun to form moist curds, about 2 minutes. Add the crabmeat, chives and parsley and continue cooking and tossing until the eggs have formed more solid curds that cling to the farfalle, 1 to 2 minutes more.

Serve immediately, passing grated Parmesan and black pepper for guests to add to taste.

Medication Doesn’t Stop Vertigo’s Spinning ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a terrible case of vertigo. I’m not sure what causes it or what I can do to prevent it from happening to me again. I was given two medications, promethazine for nausea and meclizine for vertigo, but still the problem persists. Can you offer some kind of help? -- J.G. ANSWER: Vertigo is the sensation of movement when not moving. Although it is classically described as a spinning sensation, some people feel as if they or the world is moving in other ways.

There are many causes of vertigo, but we generally break them down into two groups: peripheral causes, from the vestibular nerve, which connects your brain with the organ of balance in the inner ear; and central causes, from the brain itself. Peripheral causes are much more common and generally are labelled “benign,” even though they can be quite severe. Central causes are most commonly attributed to vestibular migraine and poor blood flow to the brainstem.

Only a careful exam and, occasionally, more sophisticated tests can reveal the underlying cause of the vertigo. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and I suspect that is what you were being treated for, having received a nonspecific treatment for vertigo. Although it is commonplace, I disagree with this treatment if it is used for more than a day or two, and then only in people whose symptoms are severe.

Most people get relief from an office treatment called the Epley maneuver. They can continue at home with other exercises. I would suggest that you ask your doctor about these procedures, and if he or she isn’t familiar with them, it might be wise to consult with an expert. In any event, vertigo is a symptom that can arise from several distinct medical conditions. You should find out what your diagnosis is. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion of taking a vitamin B complex capsule. A friend recommended it, but the dose of one to two capsules a day makes my urine turn bright-yellow. The daily values are from 3,000 to 8,000 percent, and that seems pretty high to me. I don’t enjoy taking it, because it smells and tastes unpleasant, but I’m mostly concerned about getting too much of a “good” thing. -- R.W. ANSWER: Here’s the good news: B vitamins are necessary, and your body is able to get rid of any excess. In fact, the yellow color of your urine is exactly that, your body spilling off the B vitamins you don’t need. There are a few medical conditions that benefit from B vitamins.

Here’s the not-so-good news: You almost certainly don’t need so much, and most people don’t benefit from taking vitamins at all.

A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables gives you most of the B vitamins your body needs. (Vitamin B-12, by contrast, is found only in animal products, which is why vegans require supplementary B-12.) If you choose to keep taking a vitamin just for general health, I would change to a brand that has lower doses and isn’t unpleasant to take.

I don’t recommend stopping megadose multivitamins suddenly.

This is particularly important for vitamin C, where symptoms of deficiency can show up temporarily in people who suddenly stop high doses.

I’m your typical sweet as pie girly girl! When I was only a few months old, I had to get one of my front legs removed, but that hasn’t slowed me down one bit. I’m the cutest tripod around!

I love exploring the world and strutting my stuff on walks, or as I call them a “flexi”.

Mom always lets me bring a special toy on our walks and keeps a watchful eye to make sure I don’t drop it and leave it behind. I also love chasing “the spot” (a laser pointer) around the house, and when I’m finally all tuckered out, cuddling up into Mom and Dad’s arms!

I was skeptical that we would ever find our keys again and I took a risk that To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”.

I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone.

Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. For those who wish to change the way we or the large percentage of people living in the U.S. acknowledge the spirit of the season, I say toughen up! Political correctness is insensitive to the majority of us Americans.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.

According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap.

This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge.

Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Retired Pittsford Teacher, John Strazzabosco, Takes a New Look at Poverty

T

hirteen years ago, retired Pittsford teacher, John Strazzabosco, needed to understand the issue of poverty that plagued people he met while doing volunteer work. His research and experiences during the years that followed led him to shocking conclusions. In his newly published book, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people, Strazzabosco shares his findings, hoping to spread awareness and inspire solutions.

John Strazzabosco has long had an interest in helping others. “I was in the middle of the 4th year of my engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati when I realized this was not what I wanted to do,” said John.

“After two years in the US Army as a hospital lab technician, I decided to use my math background to become a teacher.” He then taught in Pittsford for the following 33 years, even chairing his department a couple of times.

Long interested in social justice, John recalled, “I realized I did not truly understand poverty and how it works.” Five years after he retired in 2001, Strazzabosco felt driven to understand the complexities of poverty. “I did volunteer work with people in poverty so that I could learn more about it,” John shared. “I became involved with the Rochester Children’s Zone Effort, and the church I attended started partnering with a Rochester church, as well.”

These eye-opening experiences sparked in him a determination to end the poverty crisis. “When I saw what the kids went through, I had to know why,” John recalled. “My wife, Jeanne, and I have been involved ever since.” Jeanne runs a program called Kicks for Campers which hosts a Kickball Tournament to raise money for kids to go to Camp Cory on Keuka Lake. For Strazzabosco, those experiences led him in another direction.

“I shared with people in our church about poverty,” John explained.

“Sister Janet Korn, who helped me develop my presentation, asked if I would use it to help train mentors as a part of an Action for a Better Community self-sufficiency program. I agreed, also working with Focus Plus.”

When asked to make a presentation for a training arose at the Hillside Crestwood Center, he jumped at the opportunity. “That was really the beginning for me,” John shared. “All kinds of opportunities have started popping up. I have since presented programs for Brighton, Webster-Schroeder and the Pittsford Teacher Center to name a few.”

“Sadly, many people still think about poverty in terms of stereotypes and judgments,” said John. “Believing that people in poverty are lazy, do not want to get a job and want to live on welfare.

However, the people I’ve worked with are typically anything but lazy, and whether they receive welfare or not, they are also often working 1-2 jobs, which do not pay enough.”

“Over the years, I have identified 90 impacts that poverty has on people,” John explained. “Most of these are experienced at one time or another, sometimes all at once. They have these 90 impacts assaulting them all the time. This is true for situational poverty, and much more so for generational poverty.”

“In poverty, you might feel guilt and shame,” John elaborated. “It starts deteriorating your mind and your body…and it starts early,” he added, suggesting poverty is now being found to affect unborn children. “Poverty’s assaults on children can be silent,” John continued.

“As an infant, you experience attachment through eye gaze, touch, and tones of voice. If the infant’s parents are experiencing their own guilt, shame and stress, that affects how they relate to the infant.”

“Hunger is another silent assault,” John continued. “Also, poverty is the #1 predictor of child abuse,” he added, careful to emphasize that many parents living in poverty do not abuse their children. “Once I started making a list of these impacts, I didn’t think I was going to be able to stop,” said John. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than the 90 I reported.”

“About 6 years ago, I decided to write a book about what I have learned,” shared John. “Now, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people has been published.” Poverty is a serious issue with long-lasting effects on those who experience it. Yet, in spite of the enormity of this issue-traditionally 11-15% of Americans and between 20 and 25% of all children in the USA live in poverty-he believes there is hope.

“People must first have their basic needs met, and in poverty, this isn’t happening,” said John. “Food, rent, sickness, shame, cold, hunger, fear: these critical factors are so demanding that attention must be given to them first. Work, education, going to school, career: these might very well get lost when one is totally overwhelmed by making decisions in survival mode.”

Strazzabosco hopes he can help others understand poverty’s impacts as well as encourage creative solutions.

“I want to see poverty end,” he said, emphasizing that it is up to all of us to find effective solutions before they can be implemented nationally. “First, we must believe we can solve this problem and end poverty together, then we have to find John Stazzabosco at his Book Launch on a way to do it.”

“Having a living landscape of grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants is good. Using this outdoor space to reap the health benefits it offers is even better,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), whose Foundation created TurfMutt, an environmental education and stewardship program that teaches the value and benefits of the outdoors. “Getting outside, even for just 10 minutes, can do much to boost your mood, productivity, and quality of life.”

Take a walk. Lace up your athletic shoes and head out for a walk around the block or to your neighborhood park. While you’re out, commit to turning off your cell phone and enjoying the natural setting around you (it’s just 10 minutes, after all!).

Get your kids moving. A rousing game of tag or hide-and-seek in the family yard is a great way to counter computer and screen time.

Play with your dog. A dog’s favorite “room” of the house is your family yard. Take inspiration from your pooch and spend a few minutes outside playing Frisbee or fetch.

Clean up your outdoor living room. Make simple work of yard chores by breaking them up into smaller chunks. Ten minutes is enough time to put a serious dent in weeding a flower bed, sweeping off the back patio, or picking up debris from your lawn.

Plant something. It is spring planting season, so take 10 minutes to dig a hole and introduce a new plant or get started on your vegetable garden or flower beds.

Meet outside. Fresh air can be a catalyst for fresh ideas, so take your next brainstorming session for work outdoors. Need to have a heart-to-heart with your child? Scientists have discovered that communication between parents and children is more connected when conducted outside.

Sit back and relax. Sometimes, the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all. Spend some time in a hammock, spread a blanket out on the grass, or take a meditation break outside to soak up the nature around you.
