THE SOARING SPIRIT OF DANSVILLE:

INSIDE THE FINGER LAKES SOARING CLUB B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

The Finger Lakes Soaring Club (FLSC) makes its home in a hangar in the Dansville Airport, but it launches gliders and attracts soaring enthusiasts from all over Western New York. Soaring entails engineless glider planes that are towed up to at least 2,000 feet by a small-engine plane and released to navigate the air currents. Experienced glider pilots can fly for hundreds of miles and stay in the air for two to four hours from a single tow.

Cy Kastner is one of those experienced pilots. He’s been a member of FLSC for about 25 years, ever since he first tried his hand at flying a glider. Since he’s licensed to fly powered planes, he often flies the small towplanes that get a glider up to soaring height. Kastner is one of 30 club members who volunteer their time to operate the group’s five gliders and two powered towplanes. The club, which has been in Dansville since 1963, offers recreational rides to the public on weekends in fair weather months and also accepts new members interested in learning to fly for the first time.

“It’s poetry in flight,” Kastner says of soaring. “It’s an experience you will never have doing anything else, even if you’re a pilot.” He describes rising on a thermal column in the glider and seeing a bald eagle flying with him off his wingtip, the complete opposite of many people’s assumption that a plane without an engine would feel more like a sled or a roller coaster. “The [gliders] themselves are elegant and

beautiful,” he says. “You’re surrounded by glass. It’s not like you’re in an airplane at all.” He says that with no engine, the only sound as you soar is the wind around you.

Kastner calls soaring “the best kept secret in aviation,” but the club’s volunteer members do a lot to make soaring more familiar to the community in which they take off and land. They regularly show off gliders at local schools and community events, such as the annual air show at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, where they also tow for a pilot who does aerobatics in an engineless plane.

Every other year, the Finger Lakes Soaring Club hosts a regional competition as part of the Soaring Society of America, which oversees the sport in the United States. (In off years, the regional competition is held at Elmira’s Harris Hill Soaring.) During the weeklong competition, around 40 gliders from all over New York descend on Dansville. Pilots set off every day to fly to different locations around western New York, with speed, distance, and other data recorded by an onboard device. When pilots return, flight data is analyzed to award points to competitors, with a winner each day and one for the entire week. To host the competition, the club must be able to launch every competitor within one hour, which means they tow and launch about one plane per minute every morning.

Soaring is one of the easiest and most affordable ways for the curious to learn to fly, especially compared to powered planes.

At the Finger Lakes Soaring Club, flight instructors volunteer their time, so students only pay club dues and tow fees. All told, a private pilot license for gliders ends up a fraction of the cost of a license for a powered plane. One can start learning to fly a glider as young as 10 or 12 (as long as you can reach the controls, Kastner says) and glider pilots can fly solo as young as 14. The club has a dedicated Junior group with about eight members currently learning to soar.

Kastner says soaring isn’t just an easy way to learn to fly. It’s also one of the best ways to really learn how aviation works.

He says, “You really learn on the fly with a glider. And not just us. In the Air Force Academy, this is the first thing they learn

to fly.” He says soaring requires you to be far more aware of the airplane and your connection to it, likening it to putting on an article of clothing rather than climbing into a machine, saying, “You really get a sense for an airplane on a glider.”

The Soaring Club offers recreational rides, weather permitting, and accepts new members who are interested in learning to fly. The only requirements are paying dues and participating in the volunteer operation of the club. Those curious about soaring can take 15-minute flights from the Dansville airport for the cost of tow services. Rides take place from about March to November, weather permitting.

AI-assisted scams against seniors It’s not that scammers are getting smarter, but they have a new tool now: AI, artificial intelligence. For our own protection, we need to learn about AI and how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

If you’ve posted any pictures on social media, take them down.

Make it your task for January to remove any photos you’ve put up, especially if -- heaven forbid -- there are snaps of your children and grandchildren.

If you routinely attach photos in emails to friends and family, and if they tend to post those on their own social media, ask them to remove the pictures. If they don’t comply, stop sending them photos. I know, that’s harsh. But you have to protect yourself and those dear to you.

Photos are the tip of the iceberg, however. Consider what scammers can do with innocent information about a vacation you took. They can personalize their scam against you and pretend to have met you on that trip. If you’ve posted the names of family members, or even the name of your dog, they can pretend to actually know you. It will sound so innocent if they then ask for your home address or the correct spelling of your name so they can send you a souvenir.

It gets worse: Scammers can clone voice samples they find online. If you’ve posted a video of a teen grandchild, scammers can convert that into a fake video call wherein the child appears to be upset and asks for help, which is another version of the grandparent scam.

One of the best sites I’ve found to learn about AI scams is McAfee’s Guide to Deepfake Scams and AI Voice Spoofing at www.mcafee. com/learn/a-guide-to-deepfake-scams-and-ai-voice-spoofing.

Also go online and search for “how scammers use AI against seniors.”

If you suspect you’ve been a victim of fraud, report it to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old female who is currently on biannual infusions for osteoporosis and high cholesterol. In 2018, I was diagnosed with Lynch syndrome with an MSH6 deviation. The genetic testing was done after I had breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and a colectomy for three years in a row. Yearly colonoscopies have been included in my preventive care.

In 2022, during my colonoscopy, I experienced excessive vagal tone and needed atropine to restore my heart beat. Since this time, I have been given Robinul prior to the procedure, which has prevented another incident of bradycardia. My gastroenterologist isn’t recommending any more colonoscopies due to this cardiac issue and my age.

ANSWER: People with Lynch syndrome are at an increased risk for a variety of cancers, especially of the colon but also other parts of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, pancreas and bile duct). People with Lynch syndrome are also at an increased risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer (in women), prostate cancer (in men), and other cancers including skin and brain cancer. Gastroenterologists know that cancer of the colon can arise without a polyp.

For people with Lynch syndrome, a genetic analysis is recommended.

The exact gene may help determine the optimal beginning time and frequency of a colonoscopy. The decision of when to discontinue screening via a colonoscopy is not agreed upon by experts, but clearly when the risk of performing a colonoscopy is greater than the expected benefit, it’s time to stop. This is less about reaching a certain age than it is about underlying medical conditions.

You have a slow heart rate during sedation for the colonoscopy, and it sounds as though your doctors have found a way to do the colonoscopy safely. Your lifetime risk of colon cancer, given your MSH carrier status, is estimated to be 20%, but at age 79, you have outlived much of your risk.

Most cases of colon cancer in Lynch syndrome occur before age 80.

In my opinion, both the risks of a colonoscopy and the risk of developing colon cancer are low, which means that it is difficult to make a recommendation as to which way you should go. Apple Brie Bites

Servings: 24 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 5 ounces Brie cheese 1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1/4 cup pecans, chopped Heat oven to 400 F. Grease mini muffin pan.

Press seams of puff pastry sheet together. Cut sheet into quarters then each quarter into six pieces.

Use rolling pin to flatten each piece of pastry into square shape. Place one square into each muffin cup.

Put 1/2 teaspoon brie, 1 teaspoon apple butter and 1/2 teaspoon chopped pecans into each muffin cup.

Bake 13-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

DOWN HOME APPLE PIE POPCORN Yield: 10 cups 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 8 cups popped popcorn 1 cup dried apple chips, broken into large pieces 1/4 cup toffee bits Heat oven to 300 F. Whisk melted butter with vanilla. Toss brown sugar with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.

Toss popcorn with butter mixture.

Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture. Stir. Transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Here are a few ways to maximize his safety while celebrating.

Talk to your family. Sit down with them and explain that decorations, food and treats need to be placed out of your dog’s reach.

Reinforce basic obedience skills. Work with Max on recall commands and behavioral training.

Stay on schedule. The holidays are super busy, but it is important to keep Max on his regular daily schedule of walks, feeding and training.

Store dog food and treats securely. The pantry often sits open during holiday preparations. Make sure Max can’t get into his dog food and overeat, causing serious complications like bloat.

Create a “safe room” for Max during holiday events. Parties, dinners and the fun of unwrapping gifts can all overstimulate a young dog.
