They Stepped Up to the Plate: Jeff Klein Knocks It Out of the Park By Amanda Dudek
W
hile many are familiar with some outstanding baseball players, there are several others who have long gone unrecognized: the Negro League Players. Jeff Klein of Honeoye Falls is working hard to change that. An enthusiastic baseball fan with a long-time interest in collecting Negro League Player signatures, Klein decided to take his interest to an entirely new level about five years ago. “My oldest child, Makayla, was in 2nd grade then,” said Klein. “One day, she came home with a new hero: Ruby Bridges.” Makayla wanted to write a letter to the still living Ms. Bridges, and he agreed to help her do so. “My seven-year-old wrote a two-and-a-half-page letter telling her why she was her hero,” Klein said. At that time, Klein had been collecting Negro League Player signatures for years. “I was fascinated by the level of play in the segregated leagues,” explained Klein. “I was collecting from Negro League Players before and after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.” When Klein showed his collection to Makayla, she said, “Daddy, why don’t you write letters, too?” This started Klein on a journey that would change his relationship to baseball forever. “There are anywhere between 100-200 Negro League Players still living today,” explained Klein. “I began researching their addresses and writing them letters. I wanted to collect their autographs and help my children understand segregation.”
It was a small note, scrawled in reply to one of his letters, that truly set They Stepped Up to the Plate into motion. The note was from Bill McCrary, a Negro League Player. It read, Give me a call. I will tell you some of the things that happened.
At first, Klein didn’t realize his success until he met Josh Gibson’s grandson, Sean Gibson, executive director of the Josh Gibson Foundation. “He was curious about our work, asking how many people attended our event,” Klein recalled. “When I told him we had about 285 people, he replied, ‘Next time you have an event, call me. I want to be a part of it. If you can get even 30 people to show up to anything related to the Negro Leagues, you are doing something right.’ ” More confirmation soon followed. “I spoke with Ted Knorr of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR),” said Klein. “They were getting ready to have their 20th Annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference.” The SABR was considering TSUP for its top award, the Robert Peterson Recognition Award, and asked about attendance. Klein answered. “He was just astonished,” said Klein. “We received the award.” “We have our own award called the Jim Zapp Courage Award in honor of Jim Zapp, a former teammate of Willie Mays and one of the players to whom I had written,” said Klein. “When I asked Zapp’s son if we could have permission to use his father’s name, he said his family would be honored, but it is we who are honored to recognize those living today who once played segregated baseball.”
It took two weeks for Klein to build up the courage to call McCrary, believing he would be fortunate if he received even 5 minutes of the man’s time. “When I called, we talked for 45 minutes,” Klein said. “The things he shared were amazing.”

After this, Jeff Klein began adding his phone This framed poster announced “They Stepped number to every letter he Up to the Plate’s” first event. wrote. “As soon as I began putting my number in, they started calling and sharing about playing segregated baseball, particularly in the 1950’s,” he said. “I would also send two index cards: one for their signature and another to jot down a favorite memory.” Memories began pouring in. “I knew I needed to share these stories with other people,” Klein stated. “When my best friend’s neighbor, a retired journalist, asked if I was writing a book, even offering to help, I started writing, They Stepped Up to the Plate (TSUP), which is also the name of my nonprofit.” Klein met with representatives of the City of Rochester. “We were hoping the city could provide a venue,” he explained. “Instead, they said they would do all of our printing, including flyers, posters, programs and 500 personal baseball cards for each player and provide the venue, as well!” Klein invited the first four players and held the event, hoping for 100 attendees. An estimated 285 people came.

“We have now held two - Jeff Kline, events and raised a little Founder over $12,000,” said Klein. “All of the money goes to the players and hosting players for the events.” Unfortunately, the Negro League Players are an aging population. “I compare it to WWII Vets,” explained Klein. “There is a limited number of them, and many are passing away. Gardeners What is the best way to deal with slugs in my veggie garden? - Amanda D. Wet conditions and organic matter are favorable to slug problems. Depending on the extent of the planting slugs can be handpicked and removed. Organic mulch and plastic soil covers make excellent habitat and hiding places which can increase your problem. In some situations, wetted boards or heavy cardboard can be placed on garden soil and the slugs disposed of daily as they accumulate on the bottom. Replace the covers for the next night. Bait pellets containing iron are now available which will slowly kill slugs but will not pose a hazard to pets
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County or other soil organisms. The previous generation of pellets containing metaldehyde or ormethiocarb can cause serious kidney damage to dogs and cats if they are eaten. Iron occurs naturally in soil, nothing else will be injured with this kind of product. Read the labels to find a product containing iron. And bear in mind - you must read the label for all use and precautions. (The label is the law, as they say in the trade.) Slugs do the most damage when plants are young. In fact, they’re great pre-emergence seedling killers. So, start your baiting early if you choose to bait - the “early and often” approach. No way can you put bait down once and consider your
problem solved. Sure, you might (if you’re lucky) kill the majority of slugs in your garden, but you have to stay on your game. Those populations will recover as time goes by. Additional strategies include reducing use of mulch in problem areas, and removing leaves that touch the ground on vulnerable plants.
When I moved into my home, 4 years ago, the front yard had an established garden with 4 different varieties of lilies. They have taken over the garden and need to be split and moved. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia. I was in a hurry to move my car closer to the exit. My mom was waiting for me inside. She couldn’t walk far, so she was on my mind. After we got to her house, I couldn’t find my purse. I called the store, and customer service had it. Someone had found I used a wheelbarrow to put my yard debris by the roadside. It makes it easier to take out more than one bag at a time and bring them back in when they aren’t removed weekly. While taking out my trash I noticed that someone had dumped my yard bags and stolen my wheelbarrow! REALLY?!! Please return - no questions asked. I went in to make a deposit in my husband’s checking account. The teller wouldn’t accept my cash because, even though I was a beneficiary on the account, it was not a joint account. She said it had something to do with money laundering. Really? I told her that it was just a few hundred dollars, not $10,000. I asked how we could make GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Meningioma Is Tumor of Brain’s Lining ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? -- C.C. ANSWER: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarging tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My 59-year-old son has cirrhosis, probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he heard that you live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? -- B.M. ANSWER: Cirrhosis after a blood transfusion makes me suspect that your son’s liver disease is due to hepatitis C. If that’s the case, his gastroenterologist has had or will have a discussion with him about new treatments for hepatitis C that will hopefully keep him from needing a transplant. However, if he does need a transplant, it can be done from a family member or even from a nonrelated person. There are risks to the donor, but major complications happen in only 1 to 3 percent of cases. The transplanted lobe of the liver does rapidly regenerate. The results for the recipient are comparable to that of deceased organ donors. Only the transplant surgeons can recommend whether a living donor is possible. For adults in your son’s age group, the likelihood of surviving five years after liver transplantation is about 70 percent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. New Survey Reveals BP Monitoring Habits Need To Improve (NAPS)—A new survey from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association shows that 40 percent of people with high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, report their numbers were still too high at their most recent doctor’s appointment, and many don’t even know their numbers. The Problem HBP occurs when the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. Ideally, blood pressure should be below 120/80 mmHg. It’s considered elevated if the top number (systolic pressure) is above 120 and high if systolic is 130 or higher, or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is 80 or higher. Uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack and stroke, and most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. What People With HBP Can Do Most people say they know what to do to lower HBP. Yet, according to the new survey, 44 percent of those with HBP didn’t know what a high reading is, and 27 percent didn’t know what their blood pressure was the last time it was checked. In addition, while 80 percent of those diagnosed with HBP say they take medication, 16 percent of those with HBP believe that as long as they take their BP medication, they don’t need to monitor their BP. “The first step to keeping your numbers under control is knowing what they are,” said Sondra DePalma, DHSc, a cardiology PA and certified hypertension specialist. “There are no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you can’t rely on how you feel to gauge your levels. You have to take the time—less than 10 minutes—to check it. That’s 10 minutes well spent, considering controlled blood pressure can add five years to your life.” Some people will need medication to keep their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, DePalma said. “But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on lifestyle changes to support your blood pressure– lowering therapy. Making healthier living choices helps your medicine work better.” DePalma added that under a doctor’s care, some people may be able to reduce their medication dose or wean off of it after making consistent progress with lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes that help reduce blood pressure include: • Get regular physical activity: Ninety–150 minutes a week of aerobic activity can reduce systolic blood pressure about 5 mmHg. • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, such as the DASH eating plan, can drop your systolic pressure up to 11 mmHg. Reducing your salt intake by about 1,000 mg per day has a similar effect on systolic pressure as increasing aerobic activity—dropping it about 5 mmHg. • Maintain a healthy weight: For about every two pounds lost, your systolic pressure could drop 1 mmHg. • Work together with your doctor to create a treatment plan. Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
