Is salt a concern? Once you have locked in your concrete with our coating, it is not going to deteriorate anymore. However, if sandy tires are continuously driven on its surface, it will essentially “sand” it, dulling the finish. ...

Lollypop Farm is a perfect summer experience for children who want to learn more about the animals they love!

At the George Eastman House, I learned Eastman had built-in piping that was hooked up to his organ so that the sound of his playing would radiate through the entire house! ...

I have a list of hiking spots, and I am hoping to get to explore some outdoorsy spots around Rochester.

Going to a few places last year has made me want to get out and explore more new places this year, too!

talks Family Time, Rochester and Giving Back To say David Emmi has a lot on his plate is an understatement. This proud father of four coordinates approximately 300 electric utility employees in the field as a manager with the O’Connell Electric Company, leads the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Western New York as Chairman of the Board, serves as the Facilities Committee Chair and a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester, sits on the respective advisory boards of other professional organizations such as the Junior Builder Exchange, stays active in the community, and still finds the time to enjoy backyard BBQs with his family. We caught up with this busy 40 Under 40 honoree (2019) to discover his secret for balancing family, work, and serving others.

So, David, I understand you are a father of four. What are some of the ways you spend time together? Yes, I am a very proud father of four children who range from 7 years old to 10 months old: Isabella, Dominic, Leo, and Olivia.

We spend a lot of time as a family getting out around the city [Rochester] and on the east side going to area parks. Every day, my wife, Molly, has some sort of fun, new outing planned with our children, and I also learn about many new places and activities through the organizations with which I am involved.

What are some of your family’s favorite local spots? Rochester, with its unique blend of cultural, culinary, and outdoor opportunities, is a great community. The Strong Museum of Play has been wonderful for us! Last year, we reserved space in the Museum just for our family after hours, and it was so nice. Our kids

were able to spend much more time playing because we didn’t have to worry as much about them wandering off. We also love Kettle Ridge Farm in Victor, Durand Eastman Park, and the beaches in Canandaigua and in Charlotte.

Lately, we have been enjoying Mendon Ponds Park where we walk, go hiking, canoeing, and do other outdoor activities.

How has your family adapted to the pandemic?

We focused our time around cooking, athletic activities, and enjoying the outdoors. It took a lot of thoughtful planning, particularly with our broader family. We spent more purposeful times outdoors regardless of the weather.

We always have fun tailgating, BBQ-ing, and campfire cooking, so we would often gather in the backyard and just hang out. We grew closer as a family as we embraced the outdoors together.

Along with family and your work, I understand you also find time to help others?

Serving others and being involved is very important to me. There are so many opportunities to help people in need with time commitments that suit virtually any schedule. I currently serve as Chairman of the Board with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) of Western New York. I first became involved with CFF when I was nominated as one of Rochester’s Finest, a recognition for young up-and-coming professionals who are involved in the community. I fell in love with the cause and with those involved in CFF. I am humbled that they nominated and elected me, and I am happy to serve. I would like my children to see that no matter where you are in life, it is important to serve your community.

Can you describe this sense of community you hope to develop in your children?

Anyone can do charity work, but to give your time to other people because you have a truly organic sense of wanting to be with others and help them live their best lives, that means a lot more than just charity. That is service-oriented, putting in that elbow grease and sweat, and it is what I want my kids to do. My children are getting exposure to different walks of life and have different service opportunities because of the organizations in which I am involved. I hope they understand the beauty of the duty we have to our community and to one another.

You have so much going on. How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I have a lot to say about work/life balance actually. It is challenging and unique for everyone, but a resounding common denominator for success is communicating your expectations for your life and work. As a husband, the most important thing I can do is communicate with my wife about what I have going on.

We need to communicate so that we can manage each other’s expectations. When I am with my wife, I am focused on her. I am not trawling on my phone. Likewise, I am not taking phone calls when I am with my kids. While I do work a lot, there are times that are just for my family. People, no matter how busy they are, need to separate from work for specific periods to spend meaningful time with themselves, their spouses, and their families.

We give flowers in the form of bouquets as a symbol of condolence, congratulations, and love. We admire lawns from afar on our neighborhood walks. We stop and smell the roses. Gardening is one of those gifts in life that keeps on giving and connects people to not only the environment, but also to each other. Flowers are a great way to show someone that you care and are something that can be passed from one friend to another, or on from one generation to the next. Ninety-one year-old Mary Rankin has been into gardening from a young age. Her mother was a gardener who loved to plant pansies. “When I was two or three years old, I sat on her pansies. I guess that’s what got me into gardening!” she says. Now, aside from loving pansies as well, Mary has several favorite flowers.

A few of her preferred blooms to note are orchids, violets, and tree peonies. “Ordinary peonies die every year, but tree peonies grow on last year’s stems.” She also loves osteospermum, which look similar to a daisy but come in various beautiful hues of blues, purples, and pinks instead of just your ordinary white daisy.

Mary spends quite a bit of time in her garden, stating, “I’m out there every day that it’s sunny out for a couple hours in the morning and a couple in the afternoon.” She spends significantly more time in the garden during the springtime getting all of her flowerbeds ready. Not only does she tend to her own large garden, but Mary has also been a member of Garden Club for about 40 years, joining before retiring from teaching art. Perhaps it is the artist in her that loves the differing colors and textures that flowers have to offer. As a member of the Garden Club, she helps plan the gardens around her village as well as planting and weeding them. Mary is particularly excited about the new hanging “Aqua Pots” planters that are replacing the hanging flower baskets in the village. “We’ve gotten Aqua Pots that have a reservoir to hold the water for the gigantic petunias in them.”

Whether it be time spent alone with your flowers, sharing what you’ve grown with others, or participating in a club that grows them together, gardening is something that can create long-lasting memories for everyone to enjoy for years to come. Just take Mary’s Coral Bells that came from Pennsylvania years ago, for example. “They were given to me when we lived in Williamsport by a friend when my first daughter was about two or three years old.” After being planted in Pennsylvania, the Coral Bells then traveled to Ohio and now New York. Coral Bells are a perennial that last a long time. They continue to grow, and you can separate them to make new plants, which is just what Mary has done. She’s given them to her daughters, friends, and even the flower beds she takes care of for Garden Club. “Everybody has some!”

Daffodils / Hyacinths / Magnolia / Weeping Cherry / Old Fashioned Primrose: Perennials that are a bulb typically bloom in April. “All of these are blooming in my garden early Spring!” - MR Cone Flowers: Perennial, sometimes called a bi-annual, grow one year and sometimes flower 3-4 years and then die out. They are self-sowing so you can get a lot if you don’t dig them up; they bloom all summer starting in late July/August.

Dahlias: Blooming later on around August, you have to dig them up or they will freeze if left in the ground. They can be used over and over.

Tree Peony: These perennials will bloom in late April/early May. Lilies: These are a bulbous plant that bloom year after year, typically in June.

Some may bloom earlier than others.

MARY’S FAVORITE FLOWER LIST Petunias: An annual that you should buy early in the season; they will bloom all summer long.

Gerbera Daisies: This annual blooms with bright and cheerful colors.

Rieger Begonias: Annual tuberous begonia hybrids need cooler temperatures.

Tuberous Begonias: These have big flowers with a bulb, and if you save it inside and let it dry out to plant again, it will come back for a few seasons.

Snapdragons: An annual that self-sows, their seeds pop out all around.

Poppies: “There are perennial poppies that are huge, but I have some poppies that I call peony poppies that are an annual.” -MR Hostas: A perennial that spreads out with lots of different shapes of leaves and coloring, growing tall spiked flowers in the middle of summer.

Dianthis: These perennials self-sow.

490 Farmers wants to help Rochester grow -(and more than just food), but before we get into that, here’s a little bit history from their founder, Chloe Smith.

OUR HISTORY

HELPING ROCHESTER GROW

“The lot was on my route to work, and each day I passed it, I fell deeper into wondering how it could become a community space. At the time I had recently read the book City Farmer by Lorraine Johnson and had spent time at a communal farm-stay. I wanted to bring that atmosphere to Rochester.

490 Farmers became incorporated as a nonprofit in 2021 to increase their services to the community. They want to help Rochester grow by using their existing garden space to its fullest potential and also by branding and stewarding vacant garden plots and beds across the city as a part of the 490 Farmers umbrella to expand their footprint. This will increase food access in the areas that need it most. They want to have Rochester community members grow their urban agricultural knowledge, too. 490 Farmers plans to offer more free programs to community members with a focus on supporting and educating RCSD students. The garden experts and farm managers will provide age appropriate programing to foster an interest in gardening, sustainability, and cooking. Finally, 490 Farmers wants to help Rochester grow through sharing their philosophy that access to fresh food is a human right.

I reached out to an acquaintance about how to start a community garden, and was swiftly guided along a breadcrumb trail of helpful people. Within weeks, I found myself at a meeting with the Urban Agriculture Working Group, a collective of amazing local activists, city leaders, and experienced farmers. The guest speaker that night happened to be an official from the local NYS DOT, who was there to discuss lots that might be used for urban farming. I asked about the 490 spot and was told to simply send in a project proposal for them to consider.

The DOT approved our half-baked Google Docs proposal. Within 6 months, we had a DBA registered, DOT ROW and Highway Work permits, an insurance policy, and permission from the neighborhood and City to go ahead with creating the Broadway Community Garden which has come to be known simply as the 490 Farm. It is the first community garden on state-owned land in New York and the second largest in the city after the Lexington Ave Foodlink Garden. WHERE THEY WERE & WHERE THEY’RE HEADED Starting with just 10 garden plots & a shed, 490 Farmers has grown to offer 50 plots for rent, a Children’s Garden, a Free Food Forest complete with fruit trees, berry bushes & numerous perennial vegetables, an Herb Circle, beehive, Little Free Pantry, community composting area, rain catchment set up, and gathering in just three seasons. The Food Forest supplies 2 local food pantries and Food Not Bombs Roc, as well as individuals who come to harvest, which include members of a homeless encampment across the street. The Children’s Garden & composting bins are well utilized by families in the neighborhood, the rental plots serve about 45 families who lack access to growing space, and workshops and events serve the greater Rochester community. In 2019, 490 Farmers received a grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation to increase their scope, purchase materials & plants, and to build their Children’s Garden. Until now, they have operated 100% on a volunteer basis and supported the garden through yearly plot rental fees & donations.

Local artist, designer, blogger, and social media influencer, Amie Freling, shares outdoor DIY tips/trends Being creative with a passion for design is in Amie Freling’s blood. For thirty years, she has been helping clients and organizations shine with style.

“I came from a family of artists,” she says. Influenced by her art teacher grandmother and woodworker grandfather, Freling named her studio after them. After studying Illustration at Syracuse University and working as an Art Director in Washington D.C., she relocated to her Rochester hometown. “I’m grounded by family – they come first, followed by work.”

As a Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker and HGTV style set influencer, her services include interior design, color consulting and real estate staging. Clients include homeowners, restaurants, and businesses.

She also has a line of decorative hardware and home accessories.

Let’s Get Social Where Freling really bloomed has been on social media. When her teenage daughter wanted to go on Instagram seven years ago, mom gave permission – with a caveat – she was going to be monitoring it. Freling opened an account and started posting project pictures. Fast forward to 2021, and the @memehillstudio Instagram account has over 48,000 followers. She also has a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and a blog with over 11,000 followers. Covering interior design, home accessories and DIY, articles include “before and after” makeovers, home décor advice (how to infuse unconventional colors into your home) and pro tips (how to style a bookcase).

As her fan base grew, so did opportunities – and her first big national client. A selfdescribed “Black Belt in Shopping,” Freling started tagging products from Home Goods. They reached out and she has been a brand ambassador ever since.

Inspiration/Influences (and that tiny cottage on the lake)

While being an influencer expanded her reach, her love for Rochester and the Finger Lakes is never far from her mind. A few years ago, Freling spent time painting murals in a Canandaigua lake house. This serene sight inspired the purchase of a 745 square foot ‘fixer upper’ cottage on Honeoye Lake. Over the next few years, Freling and her family turned this diamond in the rough into a relaxing retreat. It also contributed towards her move away from painting murals towards more staging, style, and DIY makeover projects. One project included transforming a backyard shed into a bunkhouse. Completed with help from Home Depot, Freling won their “Orange Tank” competition (like ‘Shark Tank’ but for DIY pros). With that prize money, and a lot of sweat equity with her family, this inviting summer haven includes nautical décor and space-efficient furniture and accessories.

Local Design Trends “Covid has had a big impact on the DIY space for my Rochester clients,” Freling says. “People were itching to transform their homes and used money they couldn’t spend on travel to do so.” She kept busy with projects that included turning a closet into a study space or place for that Zoom call. “Going from an open floor plan to a semi open floor plan that has a place to escape will likely continue,” she says. Other recent design trends in the area include the use of mixed metal lighting, mixing grays and beiges, matte finishes for flooring, the use of black exterior windows, European oak/white oak flooring and the continued popularity of the modern farmhouse style, fire pits and outdoor kitchens.

Bring on the color With spring in full swing, Freling says it’s time to say goodbye to gray. Refresh your yard, deck, or patio with accessories like a bright outdoor rug and umbrella.

“There are affordable options at all price points. Head to the Public Market for Flower City Days (where you can get annuals, perennials, hanging baskets and garden accessories) as well as your town’s greenhouse/nursery (for plants, patio cushions, pillows and garden stools).”

Put up a trellis for privacy, string solar lights and add a ceramic planter for a pop of color. “You don’t need a big space– this can be done on a balcony,” she says. As for colors, Freling is a big fan of navy and blues in all hues.

She assures clients that “it’s ok to mix colors!”

What’s next Freling’s latest project is a “Garden House” for Pittsford’s Alpine Ridge subdivision. This community space includes a house that looks like a greenhouse (with reclaimed hardwood, locally sourced furniture, and a raw pebble floor), walking paths, raised garden flower beds, and a communal vegetable garden.

Going forward, Freling plans to continue to share her talents with her clients. These collaborations may include a foray into shipping container design. “I’m obsessed with tiny living, and it’s amazing to see what can be created in such a small amount of space.” She also has some surprises, which she can’t reveal just yet. Whatever the future holds, Freling remains inspired and grateful. “Rochester has been so good to me. It’s a place I’m proud to call home.
