A GETAWAY DESTINATION
to celebrate
Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn of LeRoy, less than an hour from Buffalo and only 30 minutes from Rochester, is the perfect getaway for any occasion, from a fantastic evening out to an unforgettable overnight stay. Weathering the pandemic and experiencing a shift in management, Creekside has re-emerged as Western New York’s contemporary fine dining destination. With a gorgeous patio overlooking the falls on Oatka Creek, live music in warm weather and dining igloos in the winter, Creekside offers exceptional experiences year-round. Moving beyond more restrictive fine dining, Creekside has embraced the entire culinary experience and a more family-friendly atmosphere. Its award-winning wine program features prominent and local wines as well as very rare and very boutique style wine. A very fine collection of bourbons fills a five-page list, and a changing bevy of seasonal cocktails are crafted with house-made simple syrups and other in-house ingredients. In fact, everything the Creekside restaurant serves is homemade, including breads, rolls, pastas, pastries, and hand-cut French fries. Owner Sarah Farmer credits Creekside’s popular menu to both talented head chef Rob Derin and the entire Creekside team. “We have an amazing team here – a truly collaborative environment. Everyone has a voice and believes in what we are doing. We do everything together from, overcoming challenges to naming new cocktails!” 6 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
Creekside’s location is also ideal. “Both during the height of the pandemic and now, people are looking to get out and drive. Our expansive indoor dining space, as well as our outdoor dining and bar, allows people to get away and enjoy a night out in comfort and safety.” Creekside even went so far as to be the area’s first restaurant to offer outdoor igloo dining to its patrons. “We practically have a PhD in igloos now!” Whether guests are looking for an overnight or staying in town for the weekend, Creekside’s Inn offers five beautiful, meticulously clean suites. Its exquisite honeymoon suite overlooks the falls. All include high-end amenities such as luxurious bedding, comfortable robes, heated floors, and a farm to table, homemade continental breakfast. Sliced fruit, cold brewed coffee, fresh squeezed juice, homemade granola, yogurt parfaits, and breakfast pastries are delivered directly to each room! Guests are drawn to stay at the Creekside Tavern & Inn for a variety of reasons, from local festivals to precious memories. Oatka Fest continues to drawn many visitors to LeRoy. This year, Kettle & Friends will be playing at Creekside on Saturday from 12:304:00pm, and all are invited to stop in and enjoy drinks and delicious dishes next to the falls. Still, one of the privileges that Farmer enjoys best of all is when guests return to celebrate their memories at Creekside. “Our building is 200 years old. Many personal memories are attached to it. We had a woman who got engaged here before it was even Creekside return with her husband to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary here. We truly care about these experiences.”
Creekside is Growing! With a vision of becoming an all-inclusive venue for weddings, anniversaries, and other occasions, owner Sarah Farmer, who continues to be active in real estate development, is continuing to invest in LeRoy’s Main Street community. Having purchased the LeRoy National Bank building, Farmer is reinventing the structure as an event space and ballroom. The space will feature five suites for overnight guests, instantly doubling Creekside’s occupancy.
“Our newest building will feature a Broadway-style grand ballroom, and the bank vault will transform into a very high-end bar called The Vault. A huge professional kitchen and a slew of rental packages for event materials stored in the basement will complete the space. The bank space is the final piece to the puzzle in our vision for a boutique style restaurant and event space. It will be able to accommodate up to 150 guests and sleep 14. Guests can bring in their own caterers, rent the event package they need, and when the event is complete, they can simply pack everything back into storage!” Farmer sees uses for her new building beyond Creekside events. “I envision this as an event space for the community, whether that be for a concert, a student art gallery, or banquets. Community involvement is very important to us!”

MICHAEL SELLARS STEPS UP FOR CFF & ROCHESTER’S FINEST A RT I C L E B Y J ODY G R E E R
following year, the partnership between Rochester’s Finest and the WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation began. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a rare but devastating disease that affects the lives of approximately 30,000 Americans. This means approximately one in thirty Americans can be an unwitting carrier for this genetic disorder. Up until recently, it was rare for a child diagnosed with CF to even make it to adulthood.
these generous philanthropic eff orts and contributions, Cystic Fibrosis would be a much more devastating diagnosis than it is today. One such Rochester’s Finest nominee, Michael Sellars, is determined to enhance the dialogue surrounding CF in our community. As someone who knows what it’s like to live with Cystic Fibrosis, Sellars brings his life experience and knowledge to combatting CF so that future generations may enjoy a better quality of life.
Cystic Fibrosis is a lung disease that causes thick and sticky mucus to secrete in the lungs and digestive tract. Those who suffer from it often have frequent episodes with pneumonia, nasal congestion, coughing, fatigue and various respiratory ailments. Fortunately, researchers have made significant strides with I AM 32. Rochester’s Finest is a leadership program that looks to mentor young professionals who are making a difference in their community. These young professionals excel in their chosen business field while showing integrity and leadership qualities. In recent years, Sellars has been a mentor among Rochester’s Finest, but this year, he was nominated as an honoree. Every honoree is expected to raise contributions in their business and community to go towards the CF foundation. And at the end of every year, in September, one special honoree will be awarded by the leadership committee. While Sellars does have Cystic Fibrosis, you do not have to have CF to be a mentor or an honoree. In addition, there are many advantages of joining a leadership program like Rochester’s Finest. Once nominated, honorees become ambassadors for CF in the WNY community and beyond. “There are so many networking opportunities, especially in Rochester. I was actually nominated by
a Key Bank employee (Key Bank is heavily involved in Rochester’s Finest). Th e Key Bank employee who nominated me never knew that I have Cystic Fibrosis.” Rochester’s Finest and CFF’s spotlight on Cystic Fibrosis has been crucial for those suff ering from CF and their families. New drugs and breakthrough therapies have been a lifeline of hope, expanding the expected lifetime of those who struggle with CF. Medications like Trikaft a have been groundbreaking in the CF community and would not be possible without the continued support of investors and valuable contributions.

Worthy prizes for a worthy cause. Th ose wishing to participate may register at www.roccfa.org. For more information, email Michael Sellars at msellars@roccfa.org.
Sellars notes, “One pharmaceuticals company has formulated a drug which [for some] has been life-saving…Within one month, I was off the lung transplant list. I can now exercise and play with my kids.” One major way that Sellars hopes to generate support for his favorite cause is the “Swinging Fore a Cure” golf tournament set to take place on Monday, July 25th. The tournament will be held at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville. Already Sellars has garnered support from notable benefactors such as Derek Jeter’s “Turn 2” Foundation. A Musical Story | Hanna PK Talented blues musician, Hanna PK is a hidden gem in the Flower City. A soulful pianist and vocalist, she writes and plays a variety of genres such as jazz, blues, swing, and old school folk. Growing up in South Korea, Hanna was heavily influenced by her father who was also a musician and fan of various soulful styles, many of which are rooted in the blues. Much of what she learned from him has made its way into the music she creates and shares with the world today.
In 2021, she released her debut album Blues All Over My Shoes with Kenny Neal and the VizzTone Label Group (Booga Music). Her music has been played all over the world and holds a top spot since debuting at #13 on the Billboard’s US Blues chart. She moved to Rochester in 2007 and immediately fell in love with the community’s music scene, noting how grateful she is for her fans who feel like family and support her success. Although she loves performing at the area’s many festivals, for her, it is most meaningful when people come out to support her at the smaller, local gigs played at restaurants and venues throughout the area. While her recorded songs are superb, those who follow Hanna say you have to see her in person to truly understand just how talented she is. “The audience is such a big part of the performance. As artists, we get fed by the energy and reactions in the room and instantaneously create a moment based on their vibe. You cannot truly experience that unless you are there,” shares Hanna. Her music tells an age-old story with a fresh modern twist, writing about many things she has experienced in her own life, mixed with stories of those she hears around her. “I write about experiences that are real. Some of them are fun and others tell more of a story like you would read in my diary. I want what I write to be very natural and enjoyable at the same time.”
Photos by the amazing local photographer, Amy Moore
Music has always been such a big part of Hanna’s life, and she has built a great career while establishing herself as a musician. It is an inspiration simply to hear her talk about what music means to her, let alone to watch her perform.
“Her music evokes the past, yet she puts a fresh and cool spin on her songs.”- Blues Blast Magazine
Hanna PK has always had a love for music and often turned to it in good times and bad. In fact, her favorite hobby is to just sit down at the piano and sing. Although she originally started out on what she refers to as a “more traditional” path, it was a happy accident that brought her back to music. Meeting many talented artists such as Rochester’s own legendary Hall of Fame blues musician, Joe Beard, reignited her love for music and inspired her to perform again.

A Puzzling Archivist | Kirsten Feigel
Guest Services and Education Administrative Coordinator at RMSC Museum & Science Center, archivist and museum specialist Kirsten Feigel was once a Project Cataloger at The Strong. We sat down with her to learn more about the ins and outs of cataloging work – including some 7,500 puzzles. BY KAITLIN DONNAN
Q: How did you first become interested in museum studies? My interest sparked during my undergrad studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). As a freshman, I joined the journalism program initially, and for one of my courses, I was required to take History of Journalism. I always did like American history, along with research and art. Around the third quarter of freshman year, I realized that journalism wasn’t for me and began looking into the Imaging Science and the Museum Studies programs. I started the museum program my sophomore year. 16 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
Q: How long have you been part of Rochester area museums? I began work as an intern at The Strong in 2014 as part of my graduation requirements for RIT. When I first applied, it was for a Web Essay Writer, but I ended up being put in the collections department. I was asked back in for a temporary position twice after that, both of them grant-funded. The first lasted roughly two years, and the second lasted 11 months. I have been at RMSC Museum & Science Center for four years this September, originally starting as a Guest Services Associate. I’ve also volunteered a bit at the Genesee Country Village & Museum and at the John Wehle Gallery, along
with volunteer and research work for my undergraduate thesis for the Rochester Historical Society at the Rochester Public Library. Q: Okay, I think we need to talk about these puzzles now. 7,500?! As part of one of my temp jobs in 2016 – and later volunteer work in 2018 – at The Strong, a generous donor funded my position of Project Cataloger not once, but twice in order to catalog part of her impressive jigsaw puzzle collection. The puzzles all came from local donor Anne D. Williams; she’s a jigsaw puzzle expert. Some of them came boxed, others assembled. My job was to take inventory and create metadata (data that gives information about other data) of the items that came in. For this collection in particular, Anne did her own cataloging: she had sheets within the puzzle boxes of her own research, including how many pieces, how big it was assembled, who created it,
Q: Aside from puzzles, were there any other materials that really caught your eye?
“CATALOGING IS WHAT MAKES A MUSEUM A MUSEUM. IT’S GIVING ITEMS BACKSTORIES AND SHARING THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WITH PRIMARY DOCUMENTS. WITHOUT PROPER CARE, STORAGE, AND MANAGEMENT, YOU RISK LOSING THEM FOREVER!” – KIRSTEN FEIGEL
While working on a contract as part of the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) department, I came across an orange floppy disc. At the time there were so many donors I don’t recall exactly who it came from, but my supervisor would take any mediums like that to check them for content. I didn’t think much of it until he came back down the next day, excited, and told me that I’d found a demo for a Super Mario Bros 3 game. The game is now stored safely in the archives. Q: As a whole, how important do you feel the work of cataloging and archiving is?
and what year it was dated. She had her own system of collecting that metadata, which was a huge help with inputting it into the database on my end. For a first-time intern, this was a great experience of what I’d be delving into, usually without help from a donor. In the end, I personally catalogued roughly 1,500 of the 7,500 jigsaw puzzles. Q: Impressive! Any interesting ones? There were a ton of them made from different materials (wood, plastic, cardboard, foam, etc.) and in all shapes. The figural puzzles were some of the most interesting because the pieces were cut to resemble objects. One of the biggest things I remember about jigsaw puzzles in general is that they were first introduced as an educational tool to teach geography.
Incredibly important. Cataloging, archiving, and managing collections are what make a museum a museum. It’s inventorying what you have in your collection, where it’s housed (storage, archives, on exhibit) and giving items backstories about where they came from, who gave it to the museum, etc. Not only that, but it’s sharing with the public the history of the world with primary documents. Without proper care, storage, archiving, and management, you risk losing them forever.
Q: What’s most exciting about what you do now? As Guest Services and Education Administrative Coordinator, I schedule field trips, birthday parties, scout groups, camp registration… you name it, I probably cover it! I’m also a member of the After Dark team, where we brainstorm ideas for adult programming. The Museum & Science Center is an education-based museum with a lot of live presentations, and we have our summer camps running from July 5th to August 26th— plus, with summer finally here, the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium has expanded hours for shows. We also have our RMSC Cummings Nature Center in Naples, which is great for getting outside and experiencing some new classes!

A Magical Journey | Larissa Juliano
BY TRISH PINO
HISTORY, ARTS + CULTURE
Local author, Larissa Juliano takes children on a magical journey through stories that spark their imagination. Being a mom, former teacher, and Rochester native, Juliano is often inspired by life’s simple moments, transforming them into mystical fantasies. Her passion is to help children use their imagination and to transport them into worlds beyond their own backyards, inspiring them to dream big, explore new things and embrace curiosity. Her first book, Gracie Lou, tells the story of a little girl who gets whisked away by a shooting star to explore magical lands with music, dinosaurs and even cupcakes! Each adventure sparks the character’s five senses while readers delight in the vivacity of Gracie Lou’s imagination. Juliano has always been passionate about writing and has spent more than 13 years as an elementary school teacher in Williamson Central School District. Much of her work is inspired by her children and her students’ reactions to books they read. “Reading many stories to children throughout the years, I love noticing what captivates a child, takes them to another place and inspires them to think of new ideas on their own,” shares Juliano. She wrote her first manuscript when on maternity leave and has slowly built a robust portfolio from there. Her work includes a series of STEAM holiday books (Sourcebooks Jabberwocky) with catchy titles such as How to Build a Leprechaun Trap and How to Build an Elf Trap. She also created a set of board books in collaboration with Clever Publishing which highlight the beautiful memories made with a child’s grandparents in Nana’s Garden, Nana’s Kitchen and Grandpa’s Workshop. These books are particularly special to her as she drew inspiration from the experiences her own children had with their grandparents. These tales combine her love for poetry and colorful language with beautiful illustrations that bring the stories to life. Born and raised in Brighton, Juliano now resides in Webster with her husband and three children who continue to inspire her work through ordinary, yet beautiful moments – from a simple task like putting on sunscreen to a surprise raincoat that landed in her garage – each part of everyday life becomes an adventure for her to tell. She is incredibly grateful for how welcoming and supportive the Rochester community has been and is a huge fan of supporting locally-owned businesses throughout the area. In addition to writing, Juliano can often be found holding storytime at local schools and shops throughout the community and even attending local vendor fairs to showcase her books. Juliano writes a teaching column called Story Monsters that inspires kids to think about and discuss topics that spark their imagination.
To catch Larissa Juliano this summer and see the line-up of local events she will be attending, follow her on Instagram @LarissaJulianoAuthor or visit her website LarissaJuliano.com. 18 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester

GET OUT AND EXPLORE
I first launched my retro style blog, The Soubrette Brunette, in 2013 merely as a means of documenting my daily outfits. I’d recently moved back to my hometown of Rochester after a brief post-grad stint in New York City, musical theatre degree in-hand, and I wanted a way to express myself creatively while staying occupied between productions. But after nearly 10 years of sharing my #ootds (outfits of the day) online, it’s become so much more. I cherish the opportunity to connect with thousands of other vintage fashion enthusiasts, share my costume-y point of view, and find every possible excuse to explore – and theme my outfits around – the homegrown gems the Flower City has to offer.
I believe personal style should be celebratory. I dress in a way that makes me happy and that feels like a work of art. That ethos sometimes results in more attention than I’m comfortable with. (I’m very much an introvert!). But my desire to support that day’s story when I go to a festival, a museum opening, a U-Pick farm, or a picnic with friends is stronger than my natural introversion. When I see the smile my outfits bring to other people’s faces, it doesn’t feel like such a superficial choice to make. Not everyone wants to be asked whether they’re wearing a costume in everyday life. (Given my qualifications, I don’t exactly mind!) But I love seeing others dress in any way that feels unique, authentic, and joyful. If it tells a story that’s all your own…there’s nothing more special!
It all comes down to my insatiable need for a good story. My background in performance has allowed me to immerse myself in other worlds, embody different characters, and chronicle new Rochester has so many stories to narratives. Ditto for the work I Rochester has so many stories to tell – tell – yet another reason I’m glad I do in digital marketing and with ended up where my own story began. yet another reason I’m glad Dear Blossom Studios, the portrait have a plethora of historic sites, I ended up where my own story began. We photography business I run with my several organizations that preserve co-founder, Emma Rizzo. the legacies of local legends, and more community-created art, music, dance, theater, and special I approach personal style in much the same way. My thematic events than one person can ever hope to experience in a lifetime. method of dressing means I always feel like the main character in I’m constantly inspired by this city. Even if the story being told is my own book. But more than that, it brings me a lot of joy. It gives hundreds of years in the making, Rochesterians are doing their part me something to look forward to and always provides an excuse to to keep it alive (and make it better) through commissioned murals, experience something new. local agriculture, seasonal soirées, and new traditions in the making. Whether I’m taking a stroll through the sunflowers or appreciating local art and architecture, I always dress for the occasion. I think that makes life much more vibrant.
That said, not every Rochester story is a rosy one. Our not-sodistant past can be painful to recount. Telling those stories is crucial, even when they aren’t celebratory…especially when they aren’t.
Fairport Canal: As a water sign, I love living so close to the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario. This outfit is perfect for a walk along the waves! I’ll be the first to admit that my fashion philosophy provides a bit of welcome escapism, much like a visit to the Lamberton Conservatory or a walk down the Ontario Beach Park boardwalk. Is it always practical? Nope. But we need light to combat the darkness. It might be delusional to think that a dress can do all that, but what we wear can be powerful. So, I try to use my style choices for good. This summer, I’ll make my annual visit to the Wickham Farms Sunflower Spectacular, head to an amusement park or carnival, grab some frozen custard from Abbott’s by the water, take my pick of local art and music festivals, and appreciate the natural beauty of this region. And you can bet I’ll be dressed to the nines – and always on-theme. It’s my attempt to make the everyday extraordinary. I hope to see you there, dressed in a way that tells your story.

Rochester to Skaneateles:
A PERFECT WEEKEND ROAD TRIP BY LAUREN LEONE Does it seem like summer is in full swing, and you’ve pretty much seen and done all there is to see and do in your neck of the woods? Weekend getaways—while you have the time—are such a great way to break up your routine and see new places that you normally don’t get to see! Even more so, turning that getaway into a road trip with stops along your drive adds an extra element of adventure to your travels. There are few better places to road trip than the beautiful Finger Lakes Region with so much to take in and explore. One awesome weekend getaway destination for you and some friends or family is Skaneateles. Not only does this cute little town boast charming shops and restaurants, but it’s also home to Skaneateles Lake, crowned the “Jewel of the Finger Lakes Region.” Looking to live that lake life and soak in the surroundings of a new place? Skaneateles is the place for you. Planning an entire itinerary on where to stop along the way to eat, shop and explore may seem daunting, so here is some inspiration to get you started!
A route along I-90 and US-20 will help you hit some great spots along the way. The first stop is MONTEZUMA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE in Seneca Falls. This home for wildlife is at the north end of Cayuga Lake. Here would be a great spot to kick off your trip, unplugging from your daily worries and connecting with nature. If you’re looking for a quick stop, the Visitors Center is where you’ll want to go. If you have a bit more time, the Wildlife Drive is the most popular attraction. This drive ends at an access point to more viewing areas as well as walking trails.

Continuing on from Montezuma, you’ll want to stop in AUBURN. This town is full of culture and history. The main attraction here is the HOME OF HARRIET TUBMAN. This house is a historical park that you can walk around before moving on to her nearby grave in the cemetery of the A.M.E. ZION CHURCH. Stop by the SEWARD HOUSE MUSEUM, the historic home of William Henry Seward and his family. This beautifully preserved home has one of the largest collections of American art in the United States. Also in Auburn, you’ll find EMERSON PARK. This park is at the end of OWASCO LAKE with large, beautiful trees and lush greenery. Plan ahead to bring some food with you for a nice little picnic on the lake. If you’re jonesing for some refreshments, CJS VINEYARDS and AURELIUS WINERY are situated nearby. Sip on some wine and take in the views at this wonderful family-owned winery.

WELCOME TO SKANEATELES The first order of business should be to explore what this quaint town has to offer. A pier in the center of town is a great starting point from which to view the lake as well as the village. Take a stroll through town and pop into some of its unique shops. Genesee, Jordan, and Fennell are streets filled with exciting window shopping. You can find tons of handmade crafts and one-of-a-kind gifts all throughout these streets. There’s also a lot of “Upstate” swag to be had if that’s something you’re hunting for!
38 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
All that shopping is definitely going to work up an appetite, and there are a number of delicious spots around town to get your flavor fix. It’s rumored that this neighborhood is home to one of the best fish frys around! THE PATISSERIE offers excellent seasonal treats and an adorable garden courtyard; linger over coffee and cookies and the lake! Lake activities in Skaneateles are endless. Take a swim, go for a kayak ride, or break out your fishing pole to see what you can catch. If you’re in need of some relaxation and want to enjoy the water from afar, soak in free live music at CLIFT PARK every Friday. You can also take a navigation cruise along the lake, gazing at shoreline views while sipping on a summer drink.
Visit the Skaneateles Curbstone Festival! JULY 21-23, 2022 The family-friendly event runs along Genesee, Jordan and Fennell streets. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. “Curbstone is a longstanding tradition in the village—one that families plan their summer vacations around,” says Hilary Fenner, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “The streets come alive with unique offerings, while children are enchanted by balloon art and juggling.” As in past years, more than 30 merchants will take part along with non-profit organizations and sightseeing cruises.
If you’re in the mood for some exercise, CARPENTER FALLS has a short hike to several waterfall viewpoints. Looking for even more picturesque scenery? Enjoy a bike ride along Skaneateles Creek on the CHARLIE MAJOR NATURE TRAIL or bring a picnic lunch. Whether you have a significant amount of time or just a couple days to spare, getting out of town always seems to feed the soul. There’s no better way to do that than exploring an area that’s full of history, nature, and delightful sights along the water. So, gather your bags and your favorite people to travel with and hit the road!
Enjoy shopping, live music and entertainment!

The Willow Cottage design was just built on Seneca Lake and will soon be available as an Airbnb! Amanda enjoyed working with her clients from start to completion to get the floor plan just right. While the front of a home is usually more detailed than the rear, lake houses are the opposite. This house plan specifically features a layered deck and outdoor living space with large windows and picture doors. The cozy cottage design invites guests to unplug and connect with the natural environment.
“Working with GLA has brought our vision to reality! We have been so pleased we designed a Carriage House and Cabin with Amanda and recommend her talent to friends and family!” – Calvin A mother of a two-year-old and baby on the way, Amanda says she and her husband are building themselves a farmhouse she designed: a threebedroom ranch house which brings outside views in with large windows and a nice deck.

It’s summertime, which means it’s the perfect time to find our next favorite read, whether enjoyed on the beach, during a road trip, in a hammock with a refreshing cocktail, or lounging in your own backyard! While the kids have theirs, we sat down with local book enthusiast, Jess Takatch of @readwithjesstagram to get her take on our own summer reading list. With a range of books and an entire summer before us, we have you covered.

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune
for her
This debut novel is the perfect nostalgic, binge worthy, summer read! This friends to lovers romance will offer you an escape to a summer cottage that you’ll never want to put down. You’ll smile, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and best of all, you’ll find your new favorite book!
50 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM | Rochester
The Paper Palace
by Miranda Cowley Heller One of my favorite and most thoughtprovoking reads of last summer, The Paper Palace takes place in late summer on Cape Cod and will have you on the edge of your seat. This Women’s Fiction novel follows Elle, a 50 year-old mother and wife, whose world is suddenly turned upside down. This story is full of secrets, loves, and lies with an ending that will have your head spinning! This book is best read alongside a friend or two who you can immediately discuss and dissect the author’s every word with.
28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand
Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors to read in the summertime! 28 Summers is one of my favorites by Elin, especially if you’re looking for a summer read that will also move you and stick with you long after you finish. From 1993 to 2020, you’ll experience an epic and heartbreaking love story that takes place on the island of Nantucket and find yourself looking up travel prices to visit the island yourself more than once. While this is one of my favorites, almost any Elin Hilderbrand book will transport you to Nantucket and give you a memorable love story, too.
The Wish by Nicholas Sparks
If you’re a fan of the old-school Nicholas Sparks novels, this story will bring you right back and feel like home. Told as a story within a story, I fell in love with the characters in this beautiful, heartbreaking story about first loves and how the choices we make can impact our lives forever. There was also a surprising twist at the end that I never saw coming! This story makes for a great summertime read, but make sure to have some tissues nearby!
Beach Read by Emily Henry
This story is the ultimate “beach read” romance book (if the title didn’t already give that away)! This enemies-to-lovers story is extremely funny and witty, but also heartwarming and emotional as two writers spend their summer as neighbors trying to get out of a rut while each dealing with their own difficulties and setbacks. Emily Henry is another great author to bring with you on your next beach trip, poolside, or just outside on your hammock! Her writing is beautiful and her characters are fun and easily lovable.

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams
Don’t knock it ‘til you try it! This story is the first book in a hilarious series about men who create a book club and read romance novels in order to better understand women, how to be more romantic, and how to save their struggling marriages or relationships. I truly think anyone, man or woman, would truly enjoy this fun read this summer!
Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
Whether you’re a Matthew McConaughey fan or not, this memoir was a fascinating story! I listened to the audiobook, which added an extra special element as it is told by Matthew McConaughey himself. He tells his own story with such humor and wit, it’s hard not to enjoy this one.
Survive the Night by Riley Sager
For fans of mystery/thriller novels, this is one of my favorites by Riley Sager! It reads like a screenplay of a true crime movie or TV show, which was so addicting. This eerie story, set in the early ‘90s, takes you on a road trip through the night with a complete stranger. Full of twists and turns, this was a great binge-worthy thriller that I couldn’t put down.
We Begin at the End
by Chris Whitaker For any man (or woman!) who loves crime drama series, this book is for you! Following the chief of police, who sent his best friend to prison thirty years earlier, this story is about both loss and hope. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone who will listen! This fiction novel was an easy read that I recommend reading outdoors, specifically under a shaded tree on a breezy day.
Beartown by Fredrik Backman
While this book doesn’t take place in the summertime, this is a great book for any time of year. Beartown follows a youth hockey team in a small town where hockey is everything! This story is about loyalty, commitment, friendship, and hardships. It’ll warm and break your heart many times. There is also a great sequel, Us Against You, that I loved as well.
