North Woods Sportsmen Association Inc. is a Hunting, Fishing, and Shooting Club. Shooting activities include Rifle Range, Trap Shooting and Archery Shooting. We take all these activities very seriously and go to great lengths to ensure they are done safely. In the 75 years of existence we have never had an incident.
All of our ranges have a large 20 foot high bank backstop and behind that is over a ½ mile of thick woods. At the top of the high bank is an old railroad bed. is has become a convenient short cut for kids on dirt bikes to get from Church Road to Circular Hill Road. ese kids are traveling this posted area at random times and are sometimes traveling while our members are shooting high powered rifles, shotguns and bows! We have posted warning signs in this area which they are ignoring and we are very concerned for their safety. If you know who these kids are, please discuss with them. is is a dangerous area and they cannot ride in this private posted area.
North Woods is doing everything possible to avoid a potentially very unfortunate and possibly fatal situation. e local authorities and the Sheriff ’s department have been contacted and if these kids continue to ride in this area and are caught they will be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law. If you know who they are please tell them to stop!
Questions or if you know these kids and would like to share information, please contact; Dave Ehrhart – North Woods Sportsmen Association President or Brian Wardell - North Woods Sportsmen Association Secretary

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY
Familiar faces: Some diners enjoy being a “regular” at their favorite local restaurants. Local dining spots also become gathering locations for residents in the know, instead of passing-through tourists or commuters.
Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR
WEAR A BASE LAYER. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that wicks away moisture. There are even some that are made to be water repellent and stain resistant with anti-odor properties for those in warmer climes.Since this is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin, you want something that will allow moisture to escape as you sweat.

Father’s Day arrives the third Sunday in June and presents a special way to show the fathers in one’s life how much they are cherished. People shower dads with gifts but may not know just how Father’s Day came to be. The concept of Father’s Day was inspired by Mother’s Day celebrations and was initiated by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to do something to honor her single father.TheconceptofFather’sDay was slow to take root. However, the retail industry helped propel Father’s Day to a national holiday. In the early days of Father’s Day, Dodd worked with her local YMCA and local churches to adopt what was supposed to be a religiously influenced holiday. But in the early 1900s, dads did not necessarily have the same hands-on role that manyfathershavetoday.Cartoons published in newspapers, such as the Washington Star in 1913, portrayed Dad as the breadwinner and a distant fellow who wasn’t as involved as his wife in day-to-day interaction with his children. A 1915 issue of the St. Johns Herald and Apache News from Arizona joked that fathers probably didn’t want another holiday and would be more content to drink, smoke and sleep in late. Dodd and others realized that marketing would be key to Father’s Day’s success. Clothing manufacturers, people who made tobacco and other merchants of products made for men found Father’s Day a way to sell merchandise. It just took a while for them to come around.
AFather’sDayCouncilwasstarted in the 1930s and was propelled by a group called the New York Associated Menswear Retailers. Many people joke that, because neckties are so often given on Father’s Day, the necktie industry must’ve had a hand in endorsing Father’s Day. And there is truth to that. The council was responsible for selling shirts, hats and, of course, neckties.
In 1938, the National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day was formed, primarily due to poor menswear retail sales. Dry goods, clothing and tobacco associations help promote Father’s Day, and after they held a “Father’s Day Sports Day” parade in 1941, Father’s Day sales increased, and the holiday became more popular.

Atrial fibrillation, is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, which consists of the heart’s two upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly.

My phone number appears to have gotten on another list somewhere, and the potential scammers are coming out of the woodwork -- again. I have my suspicions about where they could have found my number this time, but I can’t prove it, of course. All I can do is keep fending them off ... by not answering the phone if I don’t recognize the number or hanging up quickly if I’ve answered and realize it’s a scam. After a period of time, it will wind down as they don’t have the satisfaction of anyone answering or falling for their scheme.
I try to stay off their radar by keeping to a minimum the number of places that have my information, but sometimes it’s just required that you provide a phone number. We have to weigh the value of what we’ll get -- perhaps it’s the grocery store loyalty card that requires a phone number to sign up, or even for voter registration -- versus the potential abuse of our phone number when the scammers get it.

It means using all the types of keys on the keyboard: upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers. Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

I could see how people get scammed with fake phone calls, texts, or links. Some of them are clearly fake, but this past month I’ve gotten multiple spam calls about back taxes. I have an accountant, I know they’re fake calls, but I could see how someone would believe them or simply clicking a link can leave a pixel on your computer, grabbing your information. I’m not too old and could fall for some of these scams. Makes me feel bad for the elderly who could get these and not know any better.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.
Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Several years ago, my family’s dog “Aker” passed away when his heart stopped. We were never sure why this happened, and I was just a kid. But I’ve always wondered if it was possible to perform CPR on a pet if this happens in the future. I adopted a puppy recently and I want to be able to help him whenever he’s hurt or injured. -- Becca R. in Boulder, Colorado
DEAR BECCA: You can perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a pet whose heart has stopped -- in fact, you can even get training on pet CPR and first aid through the Red Cross.
The process for pet CPR is very similar to that of human CPR. If a dog or cat becomes ill and collapses, you first check for breathing and heartbeat -- look to see if their chest is moving, and place your hand on their chest to feel for a heartbeat. If there is no heartbeat or breathing, place the pet on their right side and perform chest compressions directly over their heart at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Give rescue breaths every 30 compressions. Keep performing CPR until they begin to breathe on their own, or until you reach the emergency vet clinic.
Those instructions don’t reveal some key factors, like: What if a dog is barrel-chested? How do you give rescue breaths to a large dog? Pet CPR and first-aid training will answer those questions, and help you feel confident that you can provide immediate care for illness, shock or injury until your pet can get to the vet for advanced care.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.
Monitoring: Throughout the procedure, a pet’s vital signs are monitored and IV fluids are administered to keep the animal comfortable and safe. Before the pet is brought out of anesthesia, dental x-rays also may be taken to check for problems not visible to the naked eye.The pet also will be monitored after anesthesia in the recovery room.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently begun seeing a new physician who dictates into a recorder during my entire exam. I find this very off-putting and don’t know what to do. Here is an example:
Doctor: What brings you in today?
Me: I have a sore throat.
Doctor speaks into to the recorder: Patient presents a complaint of a sore throat today.
Doctor: When did it start?
Me: Thursday.
Doctor speaks into to the recorder: Patient states that it began Thursday. This back and forth into the recorder continues for the entire visit. I don’t feel as if I can really have a discussion about a concern with him when he continues to interrupt me to dictate. I feel as if I am bothering him while he is working if I want to add a detail or expound on what I said.
I understand physicians are under pressure to complete their charting, and their schedules are very full, but I also believe that building a rapport is important for the doctor-patient relationship. This is not possible when I am stopped every few sentences so he can dictate.
There is no head physician or practice manager to discuss this with. Do I bring it up directly with him or say nothing? Or should I find a new physician? -- N.F.H.
ANSWER: I would also feel frustrated if my doctor did this to me. It does make it seem like writing the note is more important than listening to the patient. Even the doctor who stays behind a computer screen to make notes may not seem present in the exam room, and I certainly have been guilty of this on occasion.
I will say that newer technology may help solve this problem. When I saw my own doctor last month, I noticed that he placed his phone down, but I didn’t pay any more attention until he showed me (after the visit) what the “AI scribe” wrote as a chart note without him doing anything. I was impressed with the quality and thoroughness of the note that was seemingly written without him having to change his usual questions. (I did agree to the use of this technology before the office visit.)
I have also had human scribes in the room when I’ve seen a doctor (dermatology in particular), and while it’s easier to connect with the doctor who is paying attention to me instead of their charting, having another human in the room does feel less private.
What your doctor does seems clunky and, in some ways, the worst of both worlds. It won’t be easy to bring it up with him directly, but this is the only alternative to finding a new doctor. Even if you do find a new doctor, your original doctor should know that his using a dictation machine is costing him patients.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features

Drink more fluids. Drinking more fluids is one of the easier things people can do every day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET
by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.
What do we know?
Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.
While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.
On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.
You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.
How can we help protect the bees?
It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive.

Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Everyone cleans their windows, but few remember to dust window blinds and drapes -- places that can be havens for dust mite matter and other inanimate allergens. Using a Swiffer Duster (unscented, of course) can trap inanimate allergens two times more than a typical dusting cloth and three times more than a feather duster because it picks up dust and locks it away with thousands of flexible, fluffy fibers, designed to reach into nooks and crannies.

Advertise the sale. The more shoppers the better, so advertising yoursalecanbeadvantageous.
Choose the right date and time
Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares.
Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

Anyone with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, though some groups are more affected than others. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and older adults are at an elevated risk of diabetes-related vision loss or blindness. It’s also important that pregnant women with diabetes recognize the risk of eye problems. The NIDDK reports that women with diabetes can develop eye problems very quickly during pregnancy. Women who have already been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, the most commonly diagnosed diabetic eye disease, may have their condition worsen during pregnancy. The link between diabetic eye disease and pregnancy has to do with the changes a woman’s body undergoes when she is with child. The NIDDK notes that changes the body undergoes to support a growing baby can put stress on the blood vessels in the eyes. Damaged blood vessels can harm the retina, thereby increasing a woman’s risk for diabetic retinopathy. Individuals with diabetes who are at a heightened risk for diabetic eye disease, including pregnant women, can speak to their physicians about what they can do to protect their vision in the short- and long-term.

In a showcase of vibrant color and culture, Gates-Chili High School students sashayed down the stage, using their best model walks in the traditional garb of their heritage. Countries and regions represented included Nepal, Vietnam, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, Ghana, Ukraine, Jamaica, and, of course, the United States in the school’s first-ever multicultural fashion show.
According to the high school’s vice principal, Gigi Parchment-Magnussen, who organized the show, their student population comprises cultures from all over the world, with some students o en wearing clothing representing their heritage to school. e diverse representation inspired her to propose the fashion show to elevate the cultural wardrobes on a larger scale. She says, “We have all these people from different backgrounds—let’s showcase them in a fashion show.”
A er putting out the news to staff and students, 35 students were interested in participating. e requirement was that the students bring their own garments. For a month, students practiced twice a week, including how to walk like a model. ey learned how to do half and full turns and walk in a formation on both sides of the stage so everyone could see them. Practice was also helpful because it helped students become comfortable walking in front of their peers.
Parchment-Magnussen knows all about fashion shows. While working in the Rochester City School District, she organized fashion shows during Black History Month to celebrate AfricanAmerican culture, but never on the scale of the multicultural fashion show in Gates. e GatesChili Performing Arts Center’s magnitude of stage, backdrop, and lights, made it a nervewracking but exciting endeavor for the assistant principal.
Strutting alone or in groups, each student was announced by name and the country they represented, accompanied by special music representing their culture to the backdrop of the country flag. Parchment-Magnussen says, “Colorful, colorful, colorful. It was an array of colors.”
e performing students were applauded and supported during their performances by roughly 600 of their peers, with Parchment-Magnussen saying students were so engaged and so respectful. “ ey were into it.” e student tech crew also got involved by running the music and other technical logistics. e district’s communications director, Iva Petrosino, also adds, “ ere was definitely a great energy in the room, from the kids to the models.”
e event also featured performances by Gates-Chili dance groups, Womba Africa Drumming, the Spartan Steppers student step team, and Boots on the Ground line dancing by faculty.
Petrosino says, “As a spectator that day, the energy was palpable in the room. It was like you stepped into New York Fashion Week. Everybody was so hyped up. e audience was so supportive and so amped up to cheer on their peers, it brought a tear to my eye. It was heartwarming.”
Students who modeled may have felt like it was actually Fashion Week, with Parchment-Magnussen adding that at the end of the event, they lined up outside, while other students snapped pictures with them like they were movie stars. “It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. ey stayed in their costumes throughout the day—they were so proud.”
Now that they’ve held their first successful multicultural fashion show, the hope is that it becomes an annual tradition—and that it gets bigger. ey may even try to represent each culture through movement as well. e sky seems to be the limit, with this year’s show’s success. “I think we did what I wanted to have happen,”
“There was definitely a great energy in the room, from the kids to the models.”

Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.

Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships.
Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues.
Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu.
Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake.
Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant.
Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage.
Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first.
Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies.
Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
