Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

Look for a new job or fresh income streams.A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.
Makes 4 servings
4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.
3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.
To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

e BUM Players were born from the dissolution of the Brockport Community Players, carrying forward the legacy of local theater in Brockport. Founded by Gary omas – veteran of both the Brockport Community Players and the D’Agostino Lincoln Dinner eater – this new group allowed omas to continue sharing his theatrical talents. A seasoned member of SUNY Brockport’s eater Department and an active leader at the Brockport United Methodist Church, omas found both inspiration and support to launch a worship-drama group within the church: the BUM (Brockport United Methodist) Players. What began in 1990 as a creative addition to Sunday services, replacing sermons with dramatic performances, soon evolved into something more enduring. One of omas’s early works, , depicted several soldiers discovering faith amidst the horrors of the Vietnam War. is worship-drama format continued until 1997, when the church faced a financial crisis. In response, omas and others staged a full-length comedy, Scrambled Eggs, selling tickets to raise funds for the church. e show was a hit – and it sparked a tradition.
Since then, the BUM Players have presented an annual fulllength comedy (with the exception of 2020-2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic). While many productions have featured lesser-known titles, the group has also staged popular plays such as Neil Simon’s e Odd Couple and e Sunshine Boys, Mitch Albom’s Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, and Jean Giraudoux’s e Madwoman of Chaillot.
In 2008, the BUM Players began producing original works. Longtime member David Hansen penned Plausible Deniability, marking the group’s first step away from royalty scripts. It wasn’t until 2016 that omas followed suit with Tavern. Since then, six consecutive comedies have been written by members of the troupe, including another by Hansen and five original scripts by omas.
In addition to their comedies, the BUM Players partnered with the Kiwanis Club of Brockport in 2003 to present an annual fall “whodunit” murder mystery. ese interactive performances ran through 2019, with a total of 17 shows – most written by omas, except for two, including 2018’s Expedition to Murder by fellow BUM Player, Chuck Edwards. e group hopes to revive this tradition this fall.
Meanwhile, this month, the BUM Players are excited to share the sequel to Lake Effect Blues, performed two years ago. Return to Draspar is the troupe’s sixth consecutive full-length comedy written by a BUM Players member, this one written and copyrighted by Gary “Turk” omas. Return to Draspar is artistically directed by omas, with omas and Steve Richardson serving as co-technical directors.
e story unfolds in DeWitt, NY in the apartment of Marty (Steve Richardson) and Martina Stone (Marcy Miceli). Rex Collins ( omas), weary of the music industry, returns home for his brother Bob’s funeral and begins to consider staying in DeWitt. Bob’s widow, Amber (Marita Keys), is deep in denial and believes she is the Queen of England.
As the drama unfolds, Marty and Martina, once fused as one being, are now free to live separate lives, but search for a way to return to their beloved home on the planet Draspar in the Andromeda Galaxy. Unbeknownst to them, Draspar’s Supreme Commander believes they’ve deserted and sends

spy/bounty hunter Taylor Cole (Helen Schofield), disguised as a young girl, to bring them back. Will Marty and Martina return home? Will they be exonerated or be found guilty of desertion? Will Rex find what he seeks? Will Taylor collect her bounty? Will Amber recover her sanity? e answers await on stage!
Performances take place in the Brockport United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 7pm May 15th, 16th, and 17th, and at 2pm May 18th. Tickets are available at the Church Office, at the door, or by calling 585-637-4240 or 585-261-7381. DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
HOW TO MAKE FATHER’S DAY MORE ENJOYABLE FOR DAD
BEACH BOUND: A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favorite foods and a cold beer, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet.
At a fast-food place I dropped a coin as a teenaged couple was walking by, he quickly picked it up and returned it. I said, “Thank you, your Mom taught you well.” Minutes later I met up with her in the restroom, I remarked to her that she’s very fortunate to have a special friend like him. We need well-mannered young people like them to make the world a better place.
Thank you for sharing the stories of folks around town in the Hometown Stories column. In this world of egocentrism and tunnel vision, it’s so nice to read of people doing good around town. Thank you to all who give of their time and energy to make the world a better place.
Two neighbors have floodlights that go on at night, EVERY night, and it’s like the literal sun is beaming into my bedroom. It’s so obnoxious, bright, and surely must violate code enforcement. How would you like if someone had the brightest flashlight in the world beaming into your room while you tried to sleep? Some people have no sense and no thought to their neighbors. We live in a safe neighborhood too... just get motion detectors and stop being an a-word.
Visiting the local library, I had an annoying person talking to a group at full volume near me. He kept it up for 15 minutes and would not stop or keep it down. There were other places for him to talk, but he stayed there. When was it acceptable to talk in a library? I was told that it was not tolerated and you were notified if you did not abide. People should realize others need to concentrate on their work or reading and it is our right to not be disturbed. www.featuredmedia.com

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell. PO Box 58

Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses.
While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My partner and I are first-time campers, planning to go on our first outing in late May at a state park. We have an adult dog, “JayJay,” who will come along with us. What tips do you have to keep him safe and having fun all weekend?
– Kerry in Atlanta
DEAR KERRY: Camping with your dog can be a lot of fun if you prepare correctly. Keep some key points in mind:
– Make sure your dog doesn’t bother other campers.
– Ensure that your dog is leashed and under control at all times.
– Clean up after your dog.
– Make sure your dog has ample water, food and bedding. One way to prepare is to set up a test camp in your backyard, if you can. Set up your tent and set out all of the items you’ll be using during the outing -- cooler, chairs, stoves, etc. Put JayJay on his leash and walk him all through the mock campsite, and into the tent, so that he gets familiar with all of these things. Then roll out your sleeping mat and bedding inside the tent, including JayJay’s bedding, and climb in. Let JayJay roam the tent interior and have him lie down on his bedding. (This is also the perfect time to test all your new gear, put sealer on the tent seams, and shake things down.)
Once at camp, follow the campsite rules about pets. JayJay will need to be on a leash anytime he’s outside. It’s important that he comes back when you call him, if he gets loose. If you’re worried about your dog barking at night, try to book a campsite that is farther away from others.

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.
Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.
While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.
In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.
Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

Several years ago a big university decided that we should no longer be called seniors or elderly. Instead, we should be called “a person over 65” or maybe “older adult.” They went so far as to direct students at the university to follow “various guidelines” to ensure that ... well, what? That we’re not insulted by being called seniors? That they’re not inviting bias by calling us elderly?
What hooey.
The problem is that those guidelines don’t all agree. While one says to avoid the label “elderly,” another says it is “permitted in headlines due to space constraints.” In other words, it’s OK to use the offending word when it’s more convenient?
Again, what hooey.
Scrolling around the internet I see that universities, institutes, corporations and others are all copying off each other’s paper and deciding that certain words ought to be banned when it comes to age. Instead of saying “a group of seniors,” they want writers to insert a specific number, such as “persons 65 years and older.”
Many of the style guides seem to be fixated on age 65, yet others suggest leaving the actual number out altogether if possible. It’s safer that way.
I don’t care if someone wants to call me a senior as long as they’re willing to help me by reaching for the item on the high shelf at the grocery store. I do care that nobody at the dealership tries to sell me an unnecessary service for my car just because I’m an older female. I do care that the guy at the cellphone store doesn’t doubt me when I say that my phone battery is defective. I do care that my Social Security check is deposited on time.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary, bless their hearts, lists several definitions for “senior.” I like the second one: a person with higher standing or rank.

“I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who does not like reading…”
~ Macaulay
The person who loves to read is never alone…he has his choice of good friends, all available in the pages of books. Reading gives unlimited access to every point on earth, or even into far corners of the universe.
The man who has plenty of books is wealthy…wealthy in terms of travel, of adventure, of knowledge that he can put to use in countless ways. He is much better off than others, even a mighty king, who have never learned of the satisfaction to be found between the covers of a book.

Avoid tobacco: Not only does smoking cause between 80 and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it also contributes to many other forms of the disease, including cancers of the pancreas, liver, bladder, and cervix. Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke can reduce cancer risk.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DEAR DR.ROACH: Severalmonthsago,Ideveloped a case of a bigeminy heartbeat, so my cardiologist prescribed metoprolol. At about the same time, I had reduced my intake of magnesium from about 50% of the daily value (DV) to 35%. (This may have preceded the bigeminy onset.)
Quite by accident, I read an article recommending magnesium for a heart arrhythmia. Within a week or so of reading the article, I started magnesium gluconate at 100% of the DV. I have been taking this and metoprolol for about a month, and my condition has improved about 95%.
The question is: How can we tell if shorting down the magnesium to 35% was actually the cause and increasing it to 100% was the cure? -- L.R.
ANSWER: Bigeminy, more precisely ventricular bigeminy, is a term most people probably haven’t heard of, but most people have heard of a premature ventricular contraction (PVC). Ventricular bigeminy is when every other beat is a PVC and alternates with regular beats.
While this rhythm can happen in people without any heart disease or risk factors, your cardiologist will have considered many underlying causes such as excess alcohol use, anemia, low oxygen levels, and thyroid disease. A beta blocker like metoprolol is usually the first drug that is used as beta blockers reduce adrenalin levels, reduce the oxygen needs of the heart, and are proven to be effective at reducing the number of PVCs.
A low magnesium level is another risk factor for PVCs and ventricular bigeminy, and there are case reports of the rhythm going away completely with magnesium. So, while we can’t be sure whether your bigeminy was caused by a low magnesium level, the story is suggestive that it’s a real possibility.
I don’t recommend taking magnesium except in people who have low levels, but 100% of the DV of magnesium is quite safe to take.

“Junior Conesus Lake Association Earth Day Heroes!”
“Lilah is only 8 years old and has been an Earth Day Hero since she could walk. She picks up trash any time she comes across it and has planted trees and flowers for Earth Day the last few years. Her dedication is so pure at her age. Go green and blue!”
