INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

AI-assisted scams against seniors It’s not that scammers are getting smarter, but they have a new tool now: AI, artificial intelligence. For our own protection, we need to learn about AI and how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

If you’ve posted any pictures on social media, take them down.

Make it your task for January to remove any photos you’ve put up, especially if -- heaven forbid -- there are snaps of your children and grandchildren.

If you routinely attach photos in emails to friends and family, and if they tend to post those on their own social media, ask them to remove the pictures. If they don’t comply, stop sending them photos. I know, that’s harsh. But you have to protect yourself and those dear to you.

Photos are the tip of the iceberg, however. Consider what scammers can do with innocent information about a vacation you took. They can personalize their scam against you and pretend to have met you on that trip. If you’ve posted the names of family members, or even the name of your dog, they can pretend to actually know you. It will sound so innocent if they then ask for your home address or the correct spelling of your name so they can send you a souvenir.

It gets worse: Scammers can clone voice samples they find online. If you’ve posted a video of a teen grandchild, scammers can convert that into a fake video call wherein the child appears to be upset and asks for help, which is another version of the grandparent scam.

One of the best sites I’ve found to learn about AI scams is McAfee’s Guide to Deepfake Scams and AI Voice Spoofing at www.mcafee. com/learn/a-guide-to-deepfake-scams-and-ai-voice-spoofing.

Also go online and search for “how scammers use AI against seniors.”

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

Ruby & Dean Ruby and Dean are 10-month-old Scottish Fold cats who are excited for their first Christmas. While they are already spoiled, they are hoping Santa brings them more springs to play with because they hide them so well no one can find them. When they aren’t playing, they are either snuggling up with their human sisters or “keeping watch” in their tower.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

My mom always has a lot of activities and decorates the house all over, and I’m worried that Max will eat decorations or food. How can I keep him safe? -- Jayde S., Brooklyn DEAR JAYDE: Excellent job keeping Max’s safety first and foremost in your mind! The holidays can be a perilous time for curious puppies. Here are a few ways to maximize his safety while celebrating.

Talk to your family. Sit down with them and explain that decorations, food and treats need to be placed out of your dog’s reach.

Reinforce basic obedience skills. Work with Max on recall commands and behavioral training.

Stay on schedule. The holidays are super busy, but it is important to keep Max on his regular daily schedule of walks, feeding and training.

Store dog food and treats securely. The pantry often sits open during holiday preparations. Make sure Max can’t get into his dog food and overeat, causing serious complications like bloat.

Create a “safe room” for Max during holiday events. Parties, dinners and the fun of unwrapping gifts can all overstimulate a young dog. During the height of festivities, place Max in a quiet room with his favorite toys and bedding. When the wrapping paper is cleaned up, bring Max out to greet everyone.

Note behavioral patterns for later. Keep an eye on how Max behaves during this strange, exciting time of year. Is he reactive toward strangers or shiny, unfamiliar things? Do you have a difficult time getting him to obey commands? Resolve to work with Max on these issues after the holidays.

Rooted in Community: South Lawn Farm Expands Fresh Food Access and Urban Farming Opportunities B Y R A C H E L D E V O N A , C O R N E L L C O O P E R AT I V E E X T E N S I O N U R B A N G A R D E N E D U C AT O R

As the growing season concluded on Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County’s South Lawn Farm, the field told a story of abundance and impact. In 2025, South Lawn Farm grew, harvested, and distributed a recordbreaking 1,562.75 pounds of fresh produce that supports three local Rochester food pantries (The People’s Pantry, Trillium Food and Nutrition pantry, and The Irondequoit Community Cupboard) as well as CCE Monroe’s nutrition education programs. These donations help fill a critical gap in fresh food access, working towards providing healthy options to those who need it most.

South Lawn Farm is home to the Gaining Relevant and Outstanding Work Skills (GROWS) program, a transitional workforce program that serves Rochester urban adults facing barriers to employment. Those participating in GROWS learn soft work skills and responsibilities through the hands-on experience of urban farming, teamwork, and community engagement.

South Lawn Farm and GROWS, both established in 2022, were created to provide urban farming education and opportunities to Rochester communities experiencing a disconnect with land, agriculture, and food systems. This year, efforts to reach more marginalized communities strengthened through expanded outreach, new partnerships, and inclusive programming designed to make urban farming more accessible and welcoming.

In addition to GROWS participants, South Lawn Farm became a weekly worksite for groups from Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD), Lifetime Assistance Inc. (LAI), and Arc of Monroe’s ExperienceWorks! and employment training programs.

Throughout the growing season, an average of 20 individuals returned week after week to gain work experience on South Lawn Farm. Each of those regular individuals spent approximately 32 hours on-site at South Lawn Farm and CCE Monroe grounds and gardens, participating in demonstrations, trainings, workshops, and hands-on clinics.

Kymesha, Morgan, and Cliff, all community volunteers through LAI that visit with a Career Preparation Specialist, expressed interest in starting gardens at home.

Dave, a fellow LAI participant, said “the experience was interesting,” and “I got to do different things I normally wouldn’t do.” Most everyone said they loved getting to know new people.

South Lawn Farm’s GROWS participant, Miyana Campbell, had an extremely successful season of personal and professional growth, contributing 286.5 hours to South Lawn Farm and GROWS. In that time, she completed her OSHA-10 certification, registered for and completed three driving classes in pursuit of her driver’s license, took a course to improve her Microsoft Word skills, gained confidence in her social skills, gave public farm tours, and participated in a panel discussing the merits and importance of accessible healthy food and nutrition education. She took a three-part class series from Monroe County’s Nutrition Educator on “How to Extend the Harvest,” learning how to preserve produce through dehydration, fermentation, and freezing. Miyana also took it upon herself to learn the detailed craft of insect pinning to support Cornell’s IPM team’s spotted lanternfly educational display.

Participating in GROWS marked Miyana’s first ever job experience, and by learning work skills on South Lawn Farm, she now feels confident in her gardening knowledge and in her ability to navigate her young professional goals, saying, “Prior to working at GROWS, I had very little gardening experience and I thought when I was done with it, that’s all I was gonna have. But gardening ended up meaning much more than I expected. I’m not really a social person, but working there made me socialize and be more outgoing. I met tons of cool people who have impacted my life differently in such amazing ways. I’m so happy I got the opportunity to grow closer with my community and will continue to.”

GROWS organizers are already planning for next year’s program and invite new participants to join. Interviews for the 2026 season open in mid-January for young adults aged 18-24 from Rochester who face barriers to employment.

South Lawn Farm is a worksite for RochesterWorks, and all interested participants are paired with a Navigator from a local agency (Community Place of Greater Rochester, Greentopia, RochesterWorks, Starbridge, or The Center for Youth Services) to help navigate career opportunities and life changes and challenges.

Learning how to grow food generates more than just healthy vegetables; it cultivates a sense of connection to something greater: community amongst peers.

GROWS participants partnered with RochesterWorks Navigators get paid by the hour, and those interested in building skills in horticulture, urban agriculture, food systems, and connecting with a passionate community are encouraged to contact me at rad346@cornell.edu to learn more. Other local organizations that support a paid workforce development program are also welcome to reach out to learn more about connecting with GROWS. GROWS is designed to be a stepping stone to develop work skills and build a stronger resume, with a goal of securing long-term employment or enrolling in further education, and GROWS and Navigators are present to support each step of the way.

Lynch Syndrome Patient Is Unsure Whether To Stop Colonoscopy

Q.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old female who is currently on biannual infusions for osteoporosis and high cholesterol. In 2018, I was diagnosed with Lynch syndrome with an MSH6 deviation. The genetic testing was done after I had breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and a colectomy for three years in a row. Yearly colonoscopies have been included in my preventive care.

In 2022, during my colonoscopy, I experienced excessive vagal tone and needed atropine to restore my heart beat. Since this time, I have been given Robinul prior to the procedure, which has prevented another incident of bradycardia. My gastroenterologist isn’t recommending any more colonoscopies due to this cardiac issue and my age.

I have always been told that colonoscopies are necessary to prevent cancerous polyps from occurring. Is the risk of a colonoscopy under these circumstances greater than the risk of my getting colon cancer due to Lynch syndrome? -- F.M. ANSWER: People with Lynch syndrome are at an increased risk for a variety of cancers, especially of the colon but also other parts of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, pancreas and bile duct). People with Lynch syndrome are also at an increased risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer (in women), prostate cancer (in men), and other cancers including skin and brain cancer. Gastroenterologists know that cancer of the colon can arise without a polyp.

For people with Lynch syndrome, a genetic analysis is recommended.

The exact gene may help determine the optimal beginning time and frequency of a colonoscopy. The decision of when to discontinue screening via a colonoscopy is not agreed upon by experts, but clearly when the risk of performing a colonoscopy is greater than the expected benefit, it’s time to stop. This is less about reaching a certain age than it is about underlying medical conditions.

You have a slow heart rate during sedation for the colonoscopy, and it sounds as though your doctors have found a way to do the colonoscopy safely. Your lifetime risk of colon cancer, given your MSH carrier status, is estimated to be 20%, but at age 79, you have outlived much of your risk.

Most cases of colon cancer in Lynch syndrome occur before age 80.

In my opinion, both the risks of a colonoscopy and the risk of developing colon cancer are low, which means that it is difficult to make a recommendation as to which way you should go. Stopping is reasonable, but if you feel strongly that you want to continue, this is also reasonable.
