Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

AuctionsAnd ANTIQUES Leaving An Estate To Charity One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

D id you k now ? Before education reformists began to campaign for tax-funded schools in the late 1800s, only the very w ealthy w ere able to get an education in the United States of America. Children w hose parents could finance their education attended costly private schools. Education eventually became available to more youngsters, but it w asn’t until the 1930s that people attended school beyond the customary eight years. In fact, “ high school” w asn’t even heard of before the Great Depression, w hen it w as apparent that it w as more productive to keep teenagers in the classroom so they w ouldn’t be competing for the scarce jobs available. M illions of kids now attend school each year, and public schools enable students of all socioeconomic backgrounds to earn an education.

D id you k now ? According to recent data compiled by the United States Census Bureau, Latinos make up roughly 17 perc ent of the total U.S. population. The state of California claims the greatest numbers of Latinos overall. Latinos make up a young and fast-grow ing populace of the United States and w ill continue to shape the country and gain greater influence in the years to come.

When an American says that he loves his country, he means not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies glistening in the sun, the wide and rising plains, the great mountains, and the sea. He means that he loves an inner air, an inner light in which freedom lives and in which a man can draw the breath of self-respect. ~Adlai Stevenson

Get a head-start on tax season The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men and women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return. • Gather dependents’ information. While you might know your own Social Security number by heart, if you have dependents, you’re going to need their information as well. New parents or adults who started serving as their elderly parents’ primary caretakers over the last year will need their kids’ and their folks’ social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers upon filing, your return will likely be delayed and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits. • Gather your year-end financial statements. If you spent the last year investing, then you will have to pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest earned on the majority of savings accounts is also taxable, so gather all of

your year-end financial statements from your assorted accounts in one place. Doing so will make filing your return, whether you do it yourself or work with a professional, go more quickly. • Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. If these forms are not received in a timely manner, speak with your lender. You might even be able to download them from your lender’s secure website. • Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While it’s easiest to maintain a list of all charitable donations you make as the year goes on, if you have not done that, then you can make one now. Look for receipts of all contributions, contacting any charities you donated to if you misplaced any receipts. • Book an appointment with your tax preparation specialist now. As April 15 draws closer, tax preparers’ schedules get busier and busier. The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier and receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker. Tax season might not be right around the corner, but it’s never too early to start preparing your return.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Is Increasingly Common DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 59 years old and am having problems with my lower abdomen. After colonoscopy and ultrasound, my doctor called to say I have a fatty liver. When asked what that means, I was told to lose weight. I weigh 170 pounds, and am 5 feet, 6 inches tall. Research online suggests that alcohol is an issue, but I don’t drink. I may have a drink or a beer when I go out, but most times I am the designated driver, so I don’t drink. The only medication I take is estradiol-norethindrone 0.5-0.1; I take one daily. Diabetes does not run in my family, and I have not been tested for it. Can you give me information on “fatty liver” and treatment? -- J.A. ANSWER: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an increasingly common problem; in fact, it is the most common liver disorder in industrialized countries. Recent studies have suggested that 30 percent to 46 percent of people in the U.S. have NAFLD. Most people are diagnosed in their 40s or 50s. Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity (as opposed to fat around the hips and thighs) is common in fatty liver disease. People with suspected NAFLD should have other possible causes evaluated, especially viral hepatitis (types B and C), hemochromatosis and autoimmune hepatitis. Simple fatty liver is a benign condition; however, some people will develop the more serious condition non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Seventy percent of people with NASH are obese, and up to 75 percent have Type 2 diabetes. NASH without treatment can lead to fibrosis and even cirrhosis of the liver. Your body mass index is 27, so you are considered overweight, not obese. Still, I would recommend gradually losing 10 pounds or so. I also would recommend that you continue to drink very moderately or not at all. Exercise also can help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77, female and in great health except for being diagnosed with achalasia. I know it is rare, and I was happy to find out why my digestive system had discomfort. Do yoga twists or shoulder stands worsen this? It seems worse when I do these. -- E.H. ANSWER: Achalasia is a disease of abnormal movement in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the back of your throat to the stomach. It is caused by damage to the nerves in the esophagus, possibly from destruction by the body’s immune system. Because of the nerve damage, the food gets stuck in the esophagus, leading to difficulty swallowing and vomiting of undigested food. Both solids and liquids are affected, as opposed to esophageal cancer, in which the problem is mostly solids. Gravity helps us swallow, so being upside down will make gravity work against you, and I would expect the condition to worsen with yoga positions that turn the esophagus upside down. I wouldn’t recommend those types of positions, especially since they may cause or worsen vomiting. Treatment of achalasia should be done by an expert in the condition, and may include dilation of the esophagus, injection with Botox into the muscle or surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Power into a New Year with Protein Begin with a bang. With a busy day ahead, it can be tempting to rush out the door and skip breakfast. However, countless studies have shown this first meal of the day is extremely important. Skipping out on a balanced breakfast can drag you down all day, both mentally and physically. Being hungry later in the day may also make you more likely to overeat or nibble on high-calorie snacks. For those mornings when you’re crunched for time, grab a protein-rich ready-to-drink shake or sandwich with egg, cheese and lean meat to give yourself sustained energy for the rest of the day. Work in a workout. In addition to helping ward off disease and manage your weight, regular exercise helps lift your mood by stimulating feel-good chemicals in the brain and boosts energy by helping your body work more efficiently. A combination of aerobic or cardio activity (walking, jogging or running) and muscle-strengthening activity (lifting weights, resistance training or yoga) is the winning formula, according to the most recent Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Power with protein. Your body gets energy from three main sources: carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein plays a major role in repairing damaged cells, tissues and muscle. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and vegetables, but the best sources deliver lots of protein without a lot of fat, carbs and sugar. A protein-based snack is a good way to recharge during the day. Keep up on sleep. Quality sleep - and an adequate amount of it - is critical to your overall wellbeing. While you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work healing and repairing from the day, as well as regulating your hormonal balance and protecting your immune system. At the same time, your brain is also recharging to help your mental function, including learning aptitude, problem solving and emotional health. Most adults need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep for optimal performance.

THE FUTURE OF ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

(AVON PROFESSIONAL CENTER)

Fifteen million “root canal” procedures are performed in this country annually. These procedures are undertaken when a tooth’s nerve becomes infected or the pulp (the soft material inside the tooth) becomes damaged and bacteria in the pulp chamber cause an infection or abscess. The goal is to preserve the tooth by removing the pulp, the nerve tissue, and blood vessels and replacing them with rigid natural latex produced from tree sap called “gutta percha.” Because traditional gutta percha cannot ward off residual infection and has limited rigidity, researchers have begun to test an improved version that includes nanodiamonds (tiny diamond particles from diamond mining) and antibiotics (amoxicillin). Future testing will reveal if the new formulation warrants wide-scale use. Hearing “root canal” or “extraction” may send shivers down your spine. However, a smart dental patient will look logically at the pros and cons of each service. Join us and enjoy the benefits of professional and expert dental care. Schedule your appointment today! Our goal is to help preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime. Let us help you smile. We have been serving the dental needs of our community for many generations. P.S. It is the abscessed pulp, not the root canal treatment itself, that is painful. Most people find the root canal procedure no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.

Our sincerest thanks to the S. Byron Volunteer Firefighter who came to our rescue around 11pm on Christmas Eve. We had just struck an 8 point buck that totaled our truck on Rt. 33 in Bergen. Not only did you stay with us until the sheriff arrived, you offered to take us home to Brockport. We didn’t get your name but we will always remember your kindness.

Thank you to the person who, in a random act of kindness, paid our breakfast bill at Critics on December 19th. It was truly a surprise. Please know that we have paid it forward. Happy New Year! May you be blessed with health, happiness & rewarded for your kindness.

Thank you so much to the wonderful couple who surprised us by buying our dinners on Thursday, December 17th! We had just come from the funeral parlor and your kindness and generosity truly brightened our day and touched our hearts. Thank You! God Bless you both!

The Dansville Lions Club wants to thank everyone who participated in the Fantasy of Lights this year. Those with a tree, please take your decorations down by January 2, 2016. Thank you!

This is intended for the person who complained about the soccer game and being unfair. I honestly do not know who you’re talking to, but if you do not like the way the other team plays soccer then get your child off the field. It seems to me that you want to make sure your child does not get hurt. If that’s the case then make him a ballerina and dress him in a tutu. I am not trying to agree with the other team, but when you play sports, it’s for fun yes, but it’s competition too! I played soccer, ice hockey and football; when we got down and dirty no one complained. In closing, grow up, stop being a sissy and let your child play the game! To the person who shot our cat in November: You caused our family emotional pain and a very large pile of vet bills (which no one needs at the holidays). Also, much time was spent caring for our pet that may never fully recover. I want people to know pellet guns are not toys and injuring pets with them is animal cruelty and it is a crime. I live on a country road it’s very dark in early

morning, yet we have one or two people walk in dark clothes. You can’t see them! Why do they do this to drivers? Buy a yellow or orange vest and pants so you can be seen. Safety is good! I think you got the term landlord mixed up with lord of the land, which you are not. All the years I rented from you and all the stunts you pulled while I was moving out. Having the driveway sealed so I couldn’t pull in or out. I never asked for the deposit back but you said you’d mail it to me. You just wanted to know where I was moving to. There are more things just too numerous to mention.

Harlo E. McMindes December 27, 2015 Conesus Lake: December 27, 2015 at age 72 years. Predeceased by son Larry McMindes and brother Lester McMindes. Survived by loving partner Carol Mixon; children, Laura (Russ) Page of Leicester and Michael (Pam) McMindes of Rochester; Grandchildren, Brandon McMindes, Melissa McMindes, Tricia (Matt) Gallo, Sarah Page, Christopher Page, Alex McMindes, Lizzie McMindes, Tommy McMindes, and great-granddaughter Emma Gallo. Also survived by sisters; Shirley (Bob) Kuehne, Sharon (Vince) Peek, and Sheila (Joe) Callahan, daughter-in-law Lisa Knick, several aunts & uncles, many nieces & nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Strong Memorial Hospital Burn/ Trauma ICU. Harlo was always young at heart. As a young man working on the family farm Harlo learned the work ethic he passed on to his children and grandchildren. His passions emerged early on, wrecking every car he owned as a young man and restoring them as an old man. His sisters share stories of his love and of his torturing them as only a brother can. As an adult his love of motors and speed were apparent to all. He was known for his motorcycles, boats and cars. As a life-long hunter, the time spent with family and friends was more important than the hunt. The highlight of his year was the 3rd of July celebration at his home on Conesus Lake. Carol and Harlo shared their love for the lake with everyone, and everyone was welcome. Family was the most important gift to him and he was the best gift to them. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the family home on Conesus Lake in the Summer of 2016. Memorial contributions may be made to Teresa House, 21 Highland Road, Geneseo, NY 14454 or Geneseo Parish Outreach Center, 4520 Genesee Street, Geneseo, NY 14454. Arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., Livonia-Honeoye. To send a condolence please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

MAKING PLANS FOR OURSELVES “Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”

~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

The emotion that accompanies the loss of a loved one is difficult enough to endure without being obligated to assume the responsibility of having to make important decisions regarding the funeral and final disposition of the body. To alleviate the stress that funeral planning and burial/cremation decisions can place on others, we should all have a plan in place that outlines our funeral wishes. Doing so allows our families to better focus on grieving and recovery. In funeral planning, it is best to start with the last step and work backwards. The choice of final resting place will influence how a body is prepared, what products or services are required, and how much final arrangements will cost. Ceremony planning follows. When planning ahead, deciding whether you will be buried or if cremation is preferable will help you to determine how to proceed. Our caring staff at KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, is here to present you with a wide variety of options to help you make those decisions. Reach us today at (585) 346-5401. We will arrange an initial consultation. We invite you to tour tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Thank You

My sincere gratitude to family and friends for your cards, food, and especially your prayers while I was in the hospital and since my return home. It is a slow recovery, but each day gets better. I especially want to thank Jerry, Jennifer and Gerad, and Colleen and Bryan for all they’ve done for me. Hours spent at the hospital and help since my return home have played such a big part in my return to good health. The doctors and nurses at Strong Memorial Hospital and Dr. Balaji have been wonderful and I appreciate all they have done for me. I wish everyone a very healthy, happy and peaceful New Year.

Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.
