Is my cat going blind?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 12-year-old cat, “Gaston,” may be losing his vision. He used to jump on high objects easily; now he avoids jumping up or down. He loved chasing his laser light; now he just huddles down and seems to ignore it. At night, he meows loudly until I let him into my bedroom, where he insists on curling up with me. I have an appointment with the veterinarian for next week, but can his vision loss be reversed? -- Jeanne in Evanston, Illinois
DEAR JEANNE: I’m very glad that you’re taking Gaston to see the vet. With suspected vision loss, it’s very important to get your cat tested to determine how severe it is and the underlying cause.
Blindness in cats can be gradual or sudden, and there are many conditions that can cause it. Age, infection and common eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts or retinal detachment are all in play here.
Can Gaston’s vision loss be reversed? That really depends on what the vet finds. I can say that the sooner a problem is diagnosed, the better the chances of treatment to reverse or at least halt vision loss.
Cats whose blindness is progressive or irreversible can adapt. Those who develop it gradually tend to adapt better, while those whose vision loss is sudden may experience more anxiety and be less prone to adapt.
You can support your vision-impaired cat by keeping them indoors (if they must go out, create a fenced-in area of your yard for them). Avoid moving furniture too often. And don’t coddle your cat by carrying them around. Let them explore and adapt -- their resilience will surprise you.

Each year, Holley Middle/High School’s Homecoming celebrations culminate with a PTSA-sponsored, themed parade that awards points for the coveted spirit stick. When this year’s theme of “States” was announced, the freshmen class chose Iowa, never imagining it would spark a heartwarming interstate collaboration.
Freshman class adviser Samantha Zelent and volunteer co-adviser Jessica Seaward knew the state would hit close to home due to the Holley community’s farming connections. On a whim, they reached out to a few Iowa-based agencies to see if they might contribute materials for the float. e response was overwhelming.
Numerous Iowa organizations and affiliates including the Iowa Tourism Office, Iowa State Fair, Iowa State University, Historic Hills Scenic Byway, Iowa Department of Transportation, and the governor’s office sent donations, ideas, and encouragement for the Class of 2029. News of the float spread quickly throughout the state, and soon packages filled with Iowa-themed goodies began arriving from organizations the school hadn’t even contacted.
“Every day for about a week straight, a package arrived from Iowa,” said Paula Barrus, the attendance clerk who accepts all packages at the front desk. “ e excitement was contagious and gave us a smile every day. It really was exciting to see what the class got and how nice everyone in Iowa was to help out.”
Students embraced the opportunity, hoping to represent everything people love about Iowa, including emulating the Davis County Future Farmers Association’s sculpture “Hog Wild” as the centerpiece for their float.
Mason McGuire, Holley High School class treasurer, said, “My favorite part of the float was building it with everyone. It felt like the whole state of Iowa was cheering us on, and it made me happy. People didn’t understand why we picked Iowa, but it turned out to be the most fun float we’ve worked on because of the teamwork between the Class of 2029 and Iowa.”
“I loved our hay pig,” said Logan Lane, a freshman class member. “We actually got that idea from an email from Iowa’s Historic Hills Scenic Byway Trail. I think Iowa is a pretty cool state for everything they did for us.”

Students loved the help from Iowa and had so much fun with the float. We have been a part of their Facebook page, and they made us honorary members of the Historic Hills Scenic Byway’s Annual Bale Trail. Now, Iowa has a whole group of fans from the Holley Central School District’s freshman class!”

Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

Managing Cholesterol and Stubborn Skin Conditions

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you wrote about reducing cholesterol levels with the help of statins along with a PCSK9i, such as Repatha or Praluent. My question is: Are these PCSK9is at all beneficial if one cannot take statins? -- D.C.S.
ANSWER: Yes, PCSK9 inhibitors are very effective at lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart attacks in high-risk people. Because these drugs are given by injection and are quite expensive, they are not usually the first-line treatments. We have decades of experience using statins, so they remain the first choice for most.
However, if a person cannot take a statin, or one of the alternatives such as bempedoic acid, then PCSK9i drugs are a very reasonable choice. In people with familial high cholesterol and extraordinarily high levels of cholesterol, combination therapy with two or three drugs (a statin, a PCSK9i and sometimes ezetimibe) is frequently used.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter (62) was diagnosed about three years ago with a skin disorder called prurigo nodularis. Her dermatologist has tried three different injections, but they’re not working. She still gets very itchy breakouts. Please give me your thoughts and more information about this. -- K.M.A.

ANSWER: Prurigo nodularis is an uncommon disease that affects about one person per 1,000. I have seen a handful of cases, and fortunately the cases I’ve seen have responded well to potent steroid creams.
Regular use of skin lotions,avoiding scratching especially at night (I recommend cotton gloves), and sometimes antihistamines like Benadryl are also the firstline therapies.
If a patient needs more effective treatment and only has a limited area of itching, then a dermatologist will often inject the area with a high-potency steroid. Since it sounds like this hasn’t been successful for your daughter, there are other options.
One is a topical cream called ruxolitinib. About 45% of people responded to this treatment, compared to 20% who responded to a cream without an active drug. Ultraviolet light (narrowband ultraviolet B) showed about 80% effectiveness.
For people in whom none of these therapies work, a very expensive injection treatment, dupilumab (Dupixent) or a similar drug called nemolizumab (Nemluvio), can be used, although the response rate is not as good as desired (roughly 40%).
Since many people with prurigo nodularis have other skin diseases, and some may have (or develop) depression or obsessive skin-picking, these conditions may also need to be treated to successfully improve symptoms.

Social Security Increase for 2026
The news is in,a week late this year due to the current government shutdown: The expected increase in Social Security benefits will be 2.8% for 2026.
For the average monthly benefit of $2,015, that equates to an increase of $56, up to $2,071 for 2026 for a single person. For a couple, the $88 increase will net a $3,028 monthly benefit for 2026.
The actual Social Security increase will be less, however, because, as is typical, the Part B cost has gone up. A $21.50 increase will bring the monthly cost up to $206.50, and that comes out of the Social Security benefit.
The COLA (cost of living adjustment) is calculated every year by the price index from third quarter 2024 to third quarter 2025. Once again they’ve used the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which many think is the wrong index. (How many of us are clerical workers?) To be more accurate, the Social Security increase should be calculated by the Consumer Price Index for Elderly People (CPI-E), as that has the costs and expenses more in line with where seniors spend money.
Meanwhile, Medicare open enrollment will be in effect until Dec. 7.You still have time to look over your options and see if you need to make some changes. For example, are you taking different drugs? Visiting your doctor more now? Then there is your current plan -- has the cost changed or any of the benefits you get?
You can review plans in your area at Medicare.gov/plan-compare. Remember, scammers are everywhere and would love to have your Social Security information. They’ll approach in person, via mail, on the internet or over the phone. Don’t give out your personal information!

Veteran appreciates generosity
I was wearing a ball cap which identified me as a veteran, and dining with my wife on 10/29 at Applebee’s in Geneseo. You can imagine my surprise when our waitress said, to thank you for your service, your dinner has been paid for by an anonymous person. This kind gesture meant so much to me. Wow, I hope that person knows how much I appreciated this thoughtfulness and generosity. It was a moment I will not soon forget. I am so thankful for this reminder that goodness in the world still exists and will find ways to spread my thanks as I pass it on.

What is going on lately with so very many lost cats and dogs? It seems like every day there are notices of lost or missing cats and dogs. I’m sad for the animals and owners who are heartbroken. The other side of that is the sad amount of cats found wandering in back yards, mewing at people’s door steps, and lost dogs wandering on roads at all hours. There is info online to help pet owners understand about securing their homes, windows, and yards and providing an excellent safe pet home. Learning about a cat, dog, or any pet, is essential and understanding that by saying ‘Don’t go out’ or ‘No’ doesn’t do it. Sometimes loud noises, strangers, poorly socialized pets, getting ‘stuck’ someplace, or being just plain fearful can make an animal look for safety and escape, not knowing of course what the ‘big world’ out there is. While humane societies offer so many enticing adoptions, people should not get a pet ‘on a whim’ but rather study pet care. Let’s all keep our pets safe and happy at home. www.featuredmedia.com

After stopping at a stop sign when turning left, if you find yourself in the oncoming lane of traffic, you’re doing it wrong. Speed limits. If you can’t at least do the posted speed limit, please pull over and let the forever growing line of traffic go by you. We all make mistakes. If you pull out in front of someone, get going or pull over. Common courtesy needs to make a comeback!

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs.
