By JoAnn Derson * Fill a 2-liter soda bottle with water, then plunge the top upside down into a potted plant for self-watering while you are on vacation. Use smaller bottles for smaller pots. * Going to the beach for your vacation? Here’s a handy hint to take great care of your swimsuit.

(They get more expensive all the time!) Pack at least two suits and bring a box of baking soda.

Soak the suit for 15 minutes in a baking soda and water solution, then lay flat on a towel. Roll the towel up and wring lightly.

Unroll and hang to dry. Rotate suits. -- JoAnn * Help for a sunburn: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) right away. Soak a cloth in cold milk and drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer. * Use your Christmas light timers to set different lights to go on or off at certain times of the day while you are away on vacation. You can even use a timer on a radio, so it comes on sometimes too. The variation will make people think you are home. * To ease the ache of a brain freeze, simply cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Blow out hot air, and it will recirculate to warm your palate in seconds.

Works like a charm.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.

Obesity is on the rise among pets.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016.

That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago.

The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

The AKC urges dog owners who plan to crate train their puppies to find appropriately-sized crates before they begin training. Crates should be just large enough for dogs to lie down, stand up and turn around. Dogs won’t embrace crates that are too small, and crates that are too big will give dogs the impression that they can use one corner to defecate and use the rest for sleep or play. That’s the wrong message to send, as dogs should never be encouraged to relieve themselves in their crates.

Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis.

This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them.

This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure.

Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms.

Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses.

EBeauty at Noyes Offers Free Wigs for Cancer Patients in Need

G

etting a cancer diagnosis is never easy. Between juggling doctor appointments, treatments, and uncertainty about the future, many patients also have to worry about something more cosmetic, but still difficult–losing their hair.

Ashley Derrenbacher wanted to help patients struggling with the loss of their hair, so she started EBeauty at Noyes, a program to give out free wigs to patients in need.

“I thought this would be something good for this area,” said Derrenbacher, who was the Office Coordinator for Community Outreach Services when she started the program. She is now a Human Resources Assistant. “Before starting EBeauty at Noyes, patients would have to travel quite a distance to get wigs. With Noyes having a cancer center, I thought it would be a good program to have locally.”

“We get the wigs through a program called EBeauty Community out of Washington D.C. The wigs are all professionally cleaned through Paul Mitchell Schools,” said D e r re n b a c he r.

“Then they are packaged and sent out to hospitals across the nation.”

The program has been in place at Noyes since July of 2019. To date, 28 cancer patients have received free wigs from Noyes. Any patient who has lost their hair in the area is eligible for a free wig. They do not need to be undergoing treatments at Noyes Memorial Hospital.

“This is a completely free service,” said Derrenbacher. “Patients get the wig, a wig stand, wig caps, dry shampoo and dry conditioner. There are many styles to choose from. We have long wigs, short ones, and many colors.”

According to the EBeauty website, each wig is valued between $700$5,000. The wigs are provided to the hospital free of charge to distribute.

Derrenbacher makes the process as simple as she can for the patients.

“A lot of times if a patient is already coming for a medical oncology or radiation oncology appointment, the staff that works there let’s me know they are interested,” she said. “I can go down during their infusions and treatment and I just talk with them right there instead of setting up a separate time to come back. I can bring wig options in for the patients to look at and try on, then they can leave that day with their new wig.”

If someone were to come back as wigs age or get damaged, they are able to be replaced.

She said the feedback from the program has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People are very shocked they are free and very grateful for this service,” said Derrenbacher.

“Some people have a very hard time dealing with hair loss as they undergo treatments. It doesn’t bother everyone, but the majority of people struggle while watching their hair Pam Wolf models one of EBeauty’s fall out. I think it is a relief to many available wigs! hear that this free service is available to them.”

DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can.

Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough.

His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you.

Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant.

If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight.

During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America.

Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it!

(As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!

Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home.

Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest.

Love your pets?

Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

Elizabeth Romaine Doyle passed away peacefully on May 29, 2021 at age 51 at Strong Memorial Hospital after her long battle with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD). She was born April 19, 1970 to Peter Hraber II and Catherine Romaine Doran Hraber.

We would like to thank the Livonia First Responders and Ambulance, Our Friends and Neighbors on Pennemite Road, Lifetime Care, and our Family.

Elizabeth, known as “Bizza” to friends, was a Licensed Practical Nurse and loved caring for the Elderly. She was an avid reader.

Her greatest pleasure and motivation in life was being a mother.

Richard J. Estruch June 12, 2021 Age 62 of Avon, formerly of Mount Morris, died Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was born the son of Ricardo and Mary (Sciarrino) Estruch Jr. on September 24, 1958 in Dansville, New York. He graduated from Mount Morris Central School. He married Holly Cortelyou on October 27, 1990. Prior to his retirement in 2009 he had worked for Griffith Oil in Rochester for nearly 15 years. He was a member of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish and attended services at St. Mary’s Church in Geneseo.

He loved the New York Yankees and spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 31 years, Holly; 2 sisters, Mary Alice (Geary) Provo of Florida and Janet Wilkerson of South Carolina; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear and loving friends. He was predeceased by his father, Ricardo in 2020 and mother, Mary in 1993.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
