According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders.

Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC).

We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F. DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option.

The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized.

Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate.

Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family.

But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people.

EMC Selects Richard D. Thomas for Earth Day Award 2022 US E D BY PE R M I SS I O N O F L I V I N G STO N CO U N T Y, E X PA N D E D

T

he Livingston County Environmental Management Council (EMC) has chosen Richard D. Thomas to receive this year’s Livingston County Earth Day Award. This annual award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize outstanding achievements that are directed to help preserve, improve, or educate about the Livingston County environment. Earth Day is a global event celebrated on April 22, and this year marks the 52nd anniversary.

The EMC recognizes Mr. Thomas for his long-term commitment to the health and protection of the natural resources in Livingston County. During Mr. Thomas’ 32-year professional career in environmental law enforcement with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, he was charged with protecting the natural resources of 11 counties in Western NY, including Livingston County.

Mr. Thomas attended Finger Lakes Community College, received his degree in Conservation, and began working for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). “Growing up, I thought the dream job would be to be what in Livingston County is called a Conservation Officer,” Thomas said. “I am one of the few that grew up to become what I had dreamed of being and for about three decades. Conservation Officers do it all from handling pesticides, medical and hazardous waste, and enforcing returnable container laws to protecting fish and game.”

The EMC notes that Mr. Thomas is also known locally for land conservation and protection of his forever-wild 23-acre nature preserve, White Hawk Marsh, and the family Walnut Woods Farm, which he maintains under an active conservation plan. These thriving habitats in the Town of Caledonia are rich with wildlife, pollinators and trees. As a public speaker, he inspires and educates students and the community on natural resource conservation, and makes use of these areas for hands-on learning.

“Being a Conservation Officer is about protecting public health and safety, and it has instilled in me a sense of responsibility to others,” explained Thomas. “I will forever have an appreciation for our natural resources and will forever try to instill that sense of responsibility in others. There is nothing more important than the quality of our air, our water, and responsibilities as stewards of the planet. We have an obligation to protect these things.”

The EMC was pleased that, upon retirement, Mr. Thomas has continued his passion for environmental appreciation and knowledge through his captivating professional photography business. He shares his expansive photographic collection with others, reaching far and wide.

During the Earth Day Award presentation, Mr. Thomas recognized Livingston County for its environmental leadership.

In appreciation, Mr. Thomas presented the Board of Supervisors with a framed print of a majestic bald eagle that he photographed in Caledonia.

“Livingston County is predominately open space which works with its agricultural community,” continued Thomas. “It is home to the Livingston County Environmental Management Council and the Genesee Valley Conservancy, exceptional organizations.

It is critically important to all of us on an emotional level that we continue to set aside open spaces which will remain undeveloped.”

The EMC commends Mr. Thomas for his impressive work on behalf of Livingston County. His achievements have contributed to the protection and conservation of Livingston County’s natural resources and to the quality of life for our residents.

“I am immensely grateful to Paula Smith who nominated me for this award,” said Thomas. “She recognized me on more of a cumulative level which included both my career and personal life.” Mr. Thomas also expressed appreciation towards Livingston County for recognizing the value of EMC which it established in 1980.

“People have to start thinking more about our obligations to everything else we share the planet with than we do personal wealth,” Thomas advised. “We need to ask ourselves how responsible we are to our environmental obligations. We have a long way to go with how we treat our planet.”

Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful.

While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal.

Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library.

According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present.

While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter.

Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners What do I need to start composting?

Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead.

Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs.

• Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend.

What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more.

Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them.

How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily.

There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available.

Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket.

Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. If you’re on Medicaid or SNAP benefits, see if you qualify for the Lifeline discount.

And remember: Keep it charged!

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT

A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

for over 20 years.

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure.

The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted.

“It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.”

Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips.

Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.”

Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next.

-- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started.

Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried.

The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought.

A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough.

Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials.

Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Tony was born on July 13th, 1932 to Mary (Winter) and Anthony Diemoz Sr. in Buffalo, NY. He was a graduate of Alexander High School class of 1950, and went on to receive his BS degree at Canisius College. He entered the military in 1954 and was a member of the Army’s Counterintelligence Corps stationed in Tokyo, Japan. After his honorable discharge in 1956, he went on to obtain his MS degree from the University of Buffalo. Tony started his career in education as a history teacher and coach at Byron-Bergen High School and finished as a professor in the Social Sciences Department at Alfred State College, where he was also the head basketball coach. His family moved from Alexander, NY to Nunda, NY in 1967 upon commencement of his career at Alfred State.

Tony spent most of his life involved in athletics as a participant, coach and referee. He coached everything from little league baseball to high school golf, cross country and basketball, ending his career coaching college basketball. He was an avid golfer and took great pleasure in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Carpenter) Diemoz. His children, Stephen (wife Nancy) Diemoz, Timothy (wife Kathleen) Diemoz and Renee Diemoz Wager. His grandchildren, Andrew and Bryan Wager, Alexandria, Luke, Benjamin and Nathaniel Diemoz and Marc (wife Sarah) Federico and great-grandson Samuel Federico.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.

The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior.

During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.

Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
