The Avon Cub Scouts Bottle and Can Drive will be held the 1st Saturday of every month, November-June from 9am-12noon.

We like to knock door to door, but don’t often have the numbers, so we do a lot of drive by pick ups.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 59-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis. I have never been a drinker. I was treated with Harvoni for three months. I understand the medication is intended to cure the hepatitis C. What about the cirrhosis? My doctor hasn’t explained any of my long-term effects from taking this. -- C.J. ANSWER: Hepatitis C is a common infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus, which can be transmitted by blood and blood products, as well as through sharing needles for injection drugs.

It is rarely transmitted sexually.

Anyone with a history of injection drug use, who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before 1992, or who received clotting factors before 1987 should be tested, as should anyone with a known blood or sexual exposure to someone with hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends testing all adults born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, anyone who is HIV-infected, who received hemodialysis or was incarcerated.

The treatment you have taken (Harvoni) is a combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir, and has an excellent cure rate. The cure rate is 99 percent in people who had never been treated before and who did not have cirrhosis. Even people like you, with cirrhosis, had a cure rate of 94 percent with 12 weeks of therapy in the trial that got the medication approved.

Cirrhosis is liver damage and scarring as a result of liver disease.

Once it has developed, it is not reversible; however, a successful cure of the hepatitis C virus greatly reduces the risk of further damage, specifically reducing the need for liver transplant and the rates of death, liver cancer and other liver-related complications.

These medications are so new that I can’t estimate how much lower your risk of further damage to your liver is post-treatment; however, there is little doubt that your likely successful treatment will substantially improve your expected length and quality of life.

But, since you still have cirrhosis, you will need to take some important precautions. These include continued abstinence from alcohol, careful monitoring of prescription and non-prescription medications, avoiding raw shellfish and making sure your immunizations are up-to-date. You should keep asking your gastroenterologist questions until you are satisfied. I recommend you make a list of questions to ask, and bring a friend to help make sure you understand the answers you get. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Should your blood pressure go higher as you age? Is the top number or the bottom more important? I don’t like medicine, and my blood pressure was 145/82, but the top number sometimes goes to 150-158. -- J.S. ANSWER: Both the systolic (top number) and diastolic blood pressures are important, and the difference between them is occasionally important (for example, a blood pressure of 160/60 is more worrisome than 160/85). Blood pressure does go up with age, but even in people over 60, the recommendation is still to get the BP down below 150, and I try to aim for 140 if there aren’t too many side effects. It often takes several tries to find a regimen that gets the blood pressure where it should be without affecting quality of life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Tommy enjoyed following the NY Yankees, the Buffalo Bills, and NASCAR Racing. He was a machinist for many years in the Rochester area working in several shops.

Dick was born on January 20, 1937 in Honeoye Falls, NY to parents Theodore & Clara Jopson. He served in the Army National Guard during the 1960’s and also was a member of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and the Village of Geneseo Police. He always had a love of music and enjoyed to play guitar and perform. He was very proud to be a member of the NYS Country Music Hall of Honor, the NYS Country Music Hall of Fame, and was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Country Music. He also received the Livingston County Legend Award for his many years of music performance in our community and ␣received the WCJW Achievement in Country Music Award. Dick was a member of the Civil Defense and also owned Jopson’s Slab City in Hemlock, NY. He was well loved by all his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Terry was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and loved to spend time with family and his many friends.

Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Joan was born on August 10, 1934 in Rochester, NY to parents Kenneth & Beatrice (Schultz) Mattice. She was a graduate of Nunda Central School and later moved to Livonia Center, NY. Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She had many friends in the Livonia Community especially on Wildbriar Drive where she has resided for the last ten years. Joan loved going on bus trips, playing cards, gambling, and she enjoyed gardening. She was always a hard working person that was always willing to help others.

Joan’s Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 20th, 10:30am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. On October 1st I was shopping at Honeoye Falls Marketplace.

A nice couple was in front of me paying for their groceries. They bought two baked chickens. I said "your dinner is ready". The man smiled at me and waved to the cashier. He pointed at my groceries and said "add those on my bill" What a wonderful experience! Thanks again!

Grateful to the City of Batavia for the scarecrows on Main Street. So fun and festive! It's nice to drive down Main Street and see how creative people are!

To the "boy" who was behind me on his motorcycle in the middle of the busy [local town] intersection going to the left. I'm not turning quickly rushing the already gone arrow just because you need to get where you're going. Then you make a scene and scream at me about being a bad driver and calling me disgusting names. You're clearly the one who needs to get off the road. I hope your license gets revoked or you get arrested for road rage because that was shameful and rude.

Don't assume she knows the neighbors can see her. When the sun is shining it reflects off the windows making it hard to see inside. Why don't you try talking to her about it? If all else fails, you could just not look into her yard. People have a right to be nude in their own homes.

It's hard to find time these days with work, home, family, etc. to spend on any volunteer activity but there are so many areas in your own community that need help. To those who volunteer, keep up the good work!

Fences do not keep vermin out, and twenty foot fences would be necessary to keep deer out which is against village code. Last note, flowers are a gift from God too that we have tried to nurture also and those won't eat holes in screens and cause property damage.

I do believe trained service animals serve an important role. But they don't belong in grocery carts! And that nasty pad used to line the cart isn't cutting it. I do applaud [local store], they post at entrances service animals CANNOT be placed in carts.

In both cases, these dogs weren't service dogs, and they did not belong in the stores shopping with their owners.

I like dogs, but there is a time and place for your pets, and shopping in a store is not the place.

You're going to be the ones in a coffin someday, when you don't get back in time of oncoming traffic.

You people who pass our wide trailer and my car and the truck pulling the trailer, I've seen you barely have time to get back in on time from traffic in opposite direction. You seem to have a death wish because one of these days, you being in a huge hurry, you're going to get nailed from you taking stupid chances. Your choice. You think your lawlessness is permissible, I'm sure one day you will pay the price.

Anyhow putting all this aside, if you haven‚'t noticed it's not the Fourth of July. But if I ever hear them again, first boom, I will be calling the sheriff's office Not even four months ago myself, as well as other residents of this small hamlet received notice that our sidewalk would be extended. This was joyous news, for children walk on this road, people walk their dogs, and people in general are out walking or exercising. This is a busy route and this was long overdue. However, here we are now the summer is over, yet no sidewalk. I find it frustrating and embarrassing that this around 1/2-1 mile sidewalk extension is so hard to produce.

Whether it's the town to which this hamlet belongs is at fault, or the community itself taking it's time to "take the right or low bid" it's inexcusable. It's been four months and it's a sidewalk! So if you are in charge of this project and are reading this, please hurry it up and lets extend it before winter comes.

How you can benefit from having a pet Pets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles.

Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends beyond their appearances and temperaments.

• Pets can help prevent loneliness. Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion.

• Pets can save lives. Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with everyday tasks.

• Pets help lower allergy risks. Keeping pets around can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall.

• Pets provide socialization opportunities. A pet can be the common denominator to strike up new friendships and connect with others. Whether walking around the neighborhood or being part of a pet obedience class or interest group, pets can help their owners expand their social circles.

• Pets can help combat stress. Talking to or stroking a pet can

make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found having a pet around can lower blood pressure, ease anxiety and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder.

• Pets help teach responsibility. Taking care of a pet can help children and adults become more responsible. According to the American Pet Product Association’s 2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding of the animal.

Pets are more than mere companions. In fact, pets can offer numerous health and well-being benefits to people of all ages.

In keeping with the spirit of ‘no soldier left behind’ the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club NY6: Finger Lakes Chapter and the American Legion Post #294 came together to help one of their own. In conjunction with assistance, support, time, supplies and, in some cases labor, from the Harper Mobile Home Trailer Park, the Home Depot located on Ridge Road, the Ontario Gun Club, Rush Gravel of Rush, NY, PGR and Hoth, Alandscape & Design of Lakeville and Steve Verdi and his building crew, on the morning of Saturday, October 6th, these veterans worked hard, free-of-charge, to construct and attach a secure ramp to the home of veteran Robert Stoll.

Mr. Robert Stoll is a 92-year-old World War II veteran who served his country for 31 years with honor and distinction. Mr. Stoll came to the defense of his country when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. When he then enlisted, he was only 17 years old. In the war, Mr. Stoll served aboard the LSM 226, one of the first ships to land during the invasion of Okinawa. After the war, he served in the submarine fleet and was responsible for other duties until he retired from an exemplary 31-year military career.

Now an elderly gentleman, Mr. Robert Stoll’s several front steps had become problematic for him. As U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club Vice President of the Finger Lakes Chapter, Darryl Williams, shared, the goal of this project was to ensure that Mr. Robert Stoll could enter and leave his home safely and with as little difficulty as possible. The handicap ramp had to be constructed according to very specific codes, and Mr. Williams gave special thanks to Mr. Verdi who ensured that this code was properly followed. The teamwork and dedication among veterans and other volunteers were inspirational to witness as they built Mr. Stoll’s new handicap ramp along the side and front of his home. Mr. Stoll, overlooking the construction from his seat on his front porch, seemed so pleased with his fellow veteran’s generosity and progress.

By mid-afternoon, the project was well underway. The old front steps had been removed; concrete had been poured around supports and lumber construction was progressing steadily. Camaraderie was in the air, and while the volunteers were working hard, they were enjoying each other’s company, as well. Congratulations on your new ramp, Mr. Stoll, and thank you for your service.

PEST CONTROL HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace.

For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Although Oktoberfest originated in M unich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn w eather w ith music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer.

Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first w eek of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, w hile many others attend festivities closer to home. W hile many people are familiar w ith the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins.

According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, w hen Bavarian Crow n Prince Louis, later to be know n as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of M unich w ere invited, and the festivities w ere held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the city gates and elsew here across Bavaria. The festival and horse races w ere held once again the follow ing year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event w as expanded from one day to a few w eeks, stretching through September and into October.

The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crow ds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a tw elve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the M ayor of M unich w ith the cry “ O’zapft is! ” (“ It’s tapped! ” ).

M illions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun.
