EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

According to the Zillow HomeValue Index, the median value of homes in the United States increased dramatically between 2019 and 2024. Data from the online real estate listing service indicates the median value of a home in the U.S. inAugust 2019 was $243,386.Just half a decade later, that value had risen to $361,282, marking a 67 percent increase in median home value over that time. Housing prices have experienced an even greater uptick in Canada, where data from the Canadian Real Estate Association indicates that the average selling price of homes sold in August 2024 was $717,800 CAD ($529,427.75 USD), a roughly 73 percent increase since August 2019, when the average homes sold in Canada went for $522,700 ($385,527.84 USD). The spike in housing costs has greatly outpaced inflation. In fact, according to a 2024 report from the real estate data firm Clever, if home prices had increased at the same rate as inflation since 1963, the median price of a home in the U.S. would be $177,511, which is less than half the median value reported by Zillow in August 2024.

TIPS TO GET CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT EXERCISE

Make things social. The more people involved in an activity, the greater the chance kids will want to be involved. Therefore, invite their friends, cousins, classmates, and other relatives to participate.

Tips om Green leans

Green Orleans is a small grassroots organization open to local citizens who are commi ed to encouraging members of our community to incorporate actions that will help to preserve our environment.

1. Give window shopping a try! When you go shopping for one thing, do you o en leave with a bunch of items that you never even needed? Remember, every purchase that you make comes with packaging, so when you’re shopping, think to yourself “Do I really need this?” An advocate of this approach summarized it this way: “Once I stopped purchasing things I didn’t need, I found that my money went further, my house was less clu ered and my carbon footprint was

ou are planning to shop, consider skipping the mall and choose an independent thri or second-hand store. They have everything that you could ever want – from vintage jewelry, to fashionable clothing, to interesting household items. They’ll likely be in near-perfect condition and won’t need new resources to make or package. And, put your items in a recyclable bag. If you didn’t bring one, if possible, just carry your items to your car without a bag. Swapping in energy-efficient LED lightbulbs is an easy way to both save money and help the planet. Durable LEDs are made with high-quality materials, so they last longer and

4. When it comes to food, fresher is be er. When you eat what’s in season, you’re basically eating in a farm-to-table lifestyle as you are enjoying foods that were just harvested by local farmers. This way, you get very tasty produce and there is li le transportation involved. A fan of of this lifestyle says “This is a fun and easy way to reduce the environmental impact of the food you buy and expands your skills as a cook.”

5. Use less water when showering. By turning off the water hile you lather-up, you’ll be conserving H20. And, studies show that if you get out two minutes earlier, you’ll save about 10 gallons of water.

Green Orleans holds its meetings the third Thursday of every month at 11:30am at the Hoag Library (Albion). All are welcome! If you have any questions, contact Green Orleans coordinator, Sr. Dolores O’Dowd at

HERE’S A TIP: “Plastic grocery bags are handy for so many uses, but keeping them organized was always a pain, until I discovered that I could use an empty tissue box to store them. I just ball up each bag individually (so there is no air trapped) and stuff it in the tissue box. You can do the same thing for larger amounts of bags by using an empty 12-pack box from soda. I store one of these in my shop.” -- Fred C. from Pennsylvania

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I are traveling across the country to a relative’s wedding in about six weeks. We decided to make it a road trip so that we can bring along our two small dogs, “Jeannie” and “Peppy.” Jeannie loves traveling by car, but Peppy gets anxious even on short trips. What’s your advice for keeping him calm? Will hotels allow the dogs in? -- Carol and Ginny in Philadelphia

DEAR CAROL & GINNY: A road trip with a dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. But planning ahead of time for your dog’s comfort and safety is really important.

Collaborate with the veterinarian as you prepare -they can recommend specific training, calm-down techniques and prescribe antianxiety medication as well.

Desensitization and counterconditioning may help. It takes consistent daily training, and could take longer than you have before the upcoming trip.Start outside the car with Peppy on a leash. The moment he shows stressed behaviors (yawning, lip licking, barking, pulling away) pause or back away until he relaxes again. Then, using lots of praise, move toward the car. Ideally, you’ll get closer each session until you finally climb into the back seat with Peppy and sit together for a short period. Here’s a link with more details on this training method: www.preventivevet.com/dogs/ preventing-travel-anxiety-and-carsickness-in-dogs

Meantime, plan your driving route. The major booking apps now have a “pet-friendly” filter setting so you can locate accommodating hotels and reserve rooms. You’ll also want to mark rest stops along the highways and set a timer (every two hours or so) to stop and stretch.

Lastly, make sure to include the dogs’ medications, food, toys, leashes and medical records in your packing list, and have them wear their collars with vaccination tag and ID tag in case you’re separated.© 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.

A MORE RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP

There is no magic formula to ensure long-term health. However, if there were such an equation, sleep would be a critical component. Though adults may be able to function with less sleep than doctors recommend, the National Institutes of Health note that consistent lack of sufficient sleep can interfere with work, social functioning and driving ability.

The National Institute on Aging notes that adults of all ages generally need the same amount of sleep, typically between seven and nine hours of rest per night. That’s an important distinction, as busy adults in mid-life might feel as though they can operate on less sleep without adversely affecting their overall health. However, in addition to the problems noted by the NIH, the NIA reports that ongoing lack of sleep, or even consistently poor sleep quality, can increase risk for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and obesity. Sleep is an important component of a healthy lifestyle.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL KIDS’ BIRTHDAY PARTY

Arrange for entertainment. Plan to have one or two games that are ageappropriate just in case the children start to get antsy. But keep in mind that kids are adept at finding their own entertainment; just ensure they are safe. Consider board games or active games like kickball in the yard. Bounce house businesses cater to kids’ parties and these can be a worthy investment. Kids also may be happy to visit a favorite local ice cream shop or run around a nearby park.

TIPS TO FOSTER POSITIVE ATTITUDES IN KIDS

Be a good role model. Children learn many behaviors from watching and listening to their parents. Children who see Mom and Dad bouncing back from setbacks and exhibiting a willingness to give things another try are more likely to do the same.

Woman’s T-Score Continues To Worsen Amid Treatment

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old Asian woman. Each day, I walk 4 miles and do 30 minutes of stretching, as well as 1 hour of cardio, strength or balance exercises by following videos provided by my health insurance. Also, my brother and sister who are in their 60s and 70s have weak bones and muscles. It seems to run in my family.

In 2000, with a T-score of -1.9, I was diagnosed with osteopenia and commenced three episodes of treatment. For the first treatment, I took Fosamax in 2001, then started Actonel in 2002 for a total of six years. My T-score was -1.7. Three years later, my T-score was back to -1.9, so in 2009, for the second treatment, I restarted Actonel but switched to Boniva in February 2010 for a total of four years. My T-score was -1.4. Then, after four more years, my T-score was -2.2. For my third treatment, I restarted Boniva and took it from 2018-2025. My T-score is now -1.4. My primary care doctor has me on a “pill vacation” for one year, and I’m awaiting further treatment until a bone density test at the end of 2025. But I fear that without treatment, my aging bones are only getting worse. I try to eat right, stay active, and have started doing yoga pose videos that claim to strengthen my bones. Will they? Which shots or other treatments might help me avoid further deterioration of my bones? -- R.M.H.

ANSWER: Osteoporosis is a condition of bones that predisposes someone to getting a fracture. Anyone can get osteoporosis, but white and Asian women are at the highest risk.

Treatment of osteoporosis includes lifestyle adjustments such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake (if appropriate), and regular exercise. Both muscle-building and weight-bearing exercise are important. Yoga and stretching probably do have some additional benefit on top of your stamina-building (“cardio”) and strength exercises. Even though the evidence isn’t very strong, most people with osteoporosis are treated with calcium and vitamin D.

I use the FRAX score to decide whether medication therapy is indicated for a patient. In men and women who are at a high risk of fracture, medicines in the bisphosphonate class -- such as alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel) and ibandronate (Boniva) -- are the most commonly used firstline treatments.

Bisphosphonates last for a long time in the body’s tissues. We don’t want to use them for too long since they suppress the normal amount of bone breakdown that is key to maintaining healthy bone.Treatment for too long can lead to atypical femur fractures.A “drug holiday” is a common strategy, and given how long you have taken various bisphosphonates, I wouldn’t worry too much about the year off.

You have had less of a response than most of my patients have had to bisphosphonates, and many experts would change the class of drugs if you remain at a high risk via your FRAX score. Should you need further treatment, a different type of medicine like teriparatide (Forteo) or romosozumab (Evenity) might be considered. At this point, you should be seeing an expert such as an endocrinologist who specializes in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Finally, although celiac disease has been thought to be less common in Asians, it often leads to poor absorption and osteoporosis, so it’s worth considering a test. Symptoms of celiac disease can be very subtle.

Grateful

Recently, I received two blood transfusions provided by the American Red Cross. As a retired Red Cross Apheresis nurse, I was so proud and grateful for the compassionate two people who took time out of their day to donate this precious liquid gold. Until the need is there, we don’t often think about donating. Please, if you can, call the Red Cross and ask if you are eligible to give this great gift.

Co liment Made My Day

To the (much) younger man who complimented me today at Walmart, telling me I’m beautiful, you absolutely made my day! I don’t often receive those kinds of compliments, aside from my husband, which is why I awkwardly mumbled a thank you and hurried away, lol, but your words were very sweet. Somebody raised you well.

Cigare e Bu s

It’s always so sad to see people just throwing their cigarette butts down on the ground, especially if there’s somewhere to dispose of them close by. It makes the surrounding property look terrible and unkept. You would think people in their area of where they live would want to keep it clean. Perhaps you live like that, but others don’t want to, they choose clean areas.

Come O People!

Travelers on [local road], PLEASE obey the 35mph speed limit. This is the worst year ever with very few vehicles going the correct speed. It’s a nice neighborhood where people walk little ones in strollers and with their dogs. They should be able to do this safely and there are no sidewalks so they are on the roadside. Thank you to those who drive the posted speed limit.

Grocery Carts

Stop being lazy! Return your grocery cart to the store or those cart stalls. We sat there watching a lady put her groceries in her car. We bet she was going to leave it. She sure did. Having kids is no excuse either. If you can walk to get a cart, you can return it and walk back. Just laziness!

DID YOU KNOW?

What do Bingo® and pizza have in common? It appears each originated in Italy and are enjoyed across the globe. Bingo is derived fromtheLoGiuocodelLottod’Italia, which is the Italian national lottery that has been played since 1530. It is still played every Saturday in Italy. The game was later introduced to France, where it was known as Le Lotto, and Germany, where it was a child’s game to help students learn key subjects. Bingo soon found itself on American soil, and originally was called “Beano.” Players at country fairs would mark their numbered cards with beans after dealers selected numbered discs from cigar boxes. When players won the game, they’d yell out “beano.” An enterprising New York salesman named Edwin S. Lowe came across the game at a carnival in Georgia, and overheard someone accidentally yell “bingo” in stead of “beano” upon winning. Lowe renamed the game and hired a Columbia University math professor to come up with a higher number of combinations for playing cards so there would be fewer non-repeating groups. Lowe ultimately marketed the redeveloped game as “Bingo.”

SERVICES OFFERED BY FUNERAL HOMES

The period surrounding the death of a loved one can be difficult to navigate. Mourning a recently deceased family member or friend can dominate individuals’ thoughts, compromising their ability to devote much time and energy to anything else.

Some people decide to pre-plan their funerals in an effort to ensure their wishes are honored upon their death. Pre-planning also can afford survivors more time to grieve and ensure they won’t need to make hard decisions at a difficult time in their lives. When a deceased individual makes no such plans, family members are tasked with planning the funeral, a process that can be simplified with the help of experienced staff at a nearby funeral home. Funeral homes offer an array of services that can ensure ceremonies honor the life of the deceased and take some of the pressure off that person’s surviving family members.

Orleans County Sheriff Christopher M. Bourke is pleased to announce a Child Passenger Safety Seat Check Point Event will be held on Saturday, July 26th at the Orleans County Public Safety Building from 10am-2pm.

According to data, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 13. Preventative measures, such as proper installation of car seats, booster seats and seat belts can reduce the likelihood of death and injuries. Informing and

instructing parents and caregivers on child passenger safety and proper installation of car seats is critical to saving young lives.

Our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect your car and/or booster seats to ensure that your child is in the appropriate seat for their size and age. For Child Passenger Safety Seat questions, please contact Certified Technician Kevin Colonna at 585-589-5527 or Kevin.Colonna@orleanscountyny.gov.

Christopher M. Bourke

Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

HERE’S A TIP: Lock your device! Just as you wouldn’t leave your door unlocked, so too should you not leave your phone unlocked, particularly if you have applications on your smartphone thatcanbeeasilyaccessed.Lockit up, and be smart.

HERE’S A TIP: “I just finished packing up my house to move, and this little tip was a dandy: Use a toothpick to keep the open end of your tape from disappearing. When you cut the tape, slip a toothpick at the end that’s still on the roll. You will never have to go fishing for it again.” -- L.K. in New Mexico

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY Local libraries are invaluable resources for residents, including students and their families. The value of libraries has been recognized for far longer than many may realize. The Franklin Public Library, opened in 1778 in Franklin, Massachusetts, is considered the first lending library in the United States. Since then, libraries have become integral components of communities across the nation and even the globe.

It’s easy to overlook a local library, but they are more than just places to borrow a book. Residents can utilize an array of services to make the most of their local libraries.
