Making an Informed Health Decision --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization.

I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information.

A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications.

If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery.

It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery.

I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A shout out to Edgar at Cameron Community Ministries!! This organization is an urban outreach community center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY where 98% of residents in the neighborhood live in poverty. My husband and I had bicycles that we no longer rode and wanted to donate. We contacted Edgar who indicated that he knew of people who could use them. We set up a drop off time and were met by two guys who unloaded them from our vehicle. Within an hour after we dropped them off Edgar sent us an email indicating that the bicycles had already been spoken for. We appreciate Edgar’s willingness to help us give our

Why is it anyone else's business what last name a married woman chooses? I never changed my name when I married 35 years ago, and neither did my husband.

Your Seniors’ senses of smell and taste change with age Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect. Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well.

The senses of taste and smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60.

Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates. Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve endings in the lining of the nose. Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink. Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline. This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors.

Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life.

Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

D id You Know ? Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born betw een the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers w ere born in 1957, w hen numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, w ill be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up.

Ten years later, most w ill be eligible for retirement.

Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help.

It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist.

Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

Homemade hummus with truly unique taste Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread Makes 2 cups 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped Salt 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained 4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish 2 tablespoons chopped red onion 21/2 teaspoons ground cumin 11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chile flakes 2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below) Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below) In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.

Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro.

Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

Moroccan Spice Blend Makes about 2 tablespoons In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine 1 teaspoon each of: ground cumin, ground turmeric, saffron threads, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, ground smoked paprika, finely grated lemon peel.

Yogurt Flatbread Serves 4 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon coarse salt 21/2 cups plain yogurt Olive oil Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible.

Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.

Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted

by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.

Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too.

Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.

Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand.

Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
