DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of

time after a full charge is ideal.

Learn the tech yourself: Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all the safety features in the vehicle. Salesman demonstrate these features every day, so it shouldn’t take long for them to show you the ropes.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The first thought we have about those over 55 communities is sure, others will be like us, our every need and want will be taken care of.

But is that always true?

There is, of course, a long list of good things about living in a seniors community. In most cases there will be activities with lots of social opportunities. Depending on the community, there might be a pool, a golf course and tennis courts, a fitness center with classes, scheduled activities, excursions and trips.

For the most part, homes in these communities are smaller since many of us will be downsizing anyway and outdoor maintenance and yardwork will be done by others.

Sounds great, right?

There is another side, though, to the 55+ communities, and some of the negatives are fairly significant.

Variety in social opportunities may be very limited. After all, everyone there will be our age with few opportunities to interact with younger people. If your family situation changes and you need to move your child and grandchildren in with you, it likely won’t be possible in a 55+ community, and even visits will probably have a time limit. And there’s the issue of inheritance: If you want to leave your home to a child in your will, they couldn’t live there.

If you ever decide to sell, your target buyer pool will be limited to other 55+ seniors. Even renting, if that’s allowed in the community, will be limited to senior occupants.

Then there are the high fees to cover all the amenities, HOA and taxes -expenses that can go up at any time. Even in the beginning, your monthly costs could be in the thousands of dollars.

Before buying into a 55+ community, get advice -- a lot of it. Ask questions, get feedback, visit a potential community more than once and talk to people who live there, if possible.

Hip and Leg Pain Persist Ever

Q.

DEAR DR. ROACH: In 2022, I took a trip to France to visit friends and sightsee. My hip/leg pain started after I spent my days walking around and climbing stairs in Paris. (I walked 16 miles one day!) I rested during the evening and took ibuprofen before going to bed. I did not stop my activities because this was a special trip. Later during my vacation, I hiked trails in the Alps. There are stairs everywhere in France with very little adjustments for those who have mobility issues. It was very debilitating. When I came home, my doctor ordered an X-ray, then diagnosed me with hip bursitis on both sides.

I was in physical therapy for many weeks. Every now and then, if I pursue activities like hiking or long walks, I can feel some pain. I don’t like limiting my activities because I am relatively healthy.

Now I am 60 years old and returning to France. What can I do to prevent this pain from happening again without restricting my activities? Or what can I do to alleviate the pain if it occurs? I don’t want to become sedentary. -- J.M.C.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

ANSWER: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is still mostly called “trochanteric bursitis,” despite the fact that the hip bursa really isn’t inflamed. But this condition does sound like your diagnosis. It is caused by the overuse of the muscles and tendons in the hip, particularly those of the gluteus medius and minimus muscles.

A.Stair and hill-climbing are the activities that are most likely to cause a recurrence of your symptoms. However, you may be able to prevent symptoms from recurring. The muscles you want to strengthen are your hip abductors (those that move your leg away from the midline of your body).

By strengthening these muscles, the abnormal forces on your gluteal muscles and tendons can be avoided. Your physical therapist can show you how to do this, either with a springresisted sliding platform or an elastic resistance band. This should prevent the recurrence of GTPS.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.

Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Put a healthy spin on an old family favorite

Meatloaf is a dinnertime staple for many families. A favorite of adults and children alike, meatloaf can be prepared however cooks see fit, making it a versatile dish for family dinners. Parents who want to enjoy meatloaf with their families and do so while promoting healthy diets can try the following recipe for “Turkey, Vegetable & Oat MiniMeatloaves with Marinara Sauce” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds).

Turkey, Vegetable & Oat

Mini-Meatloaves with Marinara Sauce

Serves 6

Expeller-pressed canola oil spray

1 8-ounce package crimini (baby bella) mushrooms (about 21/2 cups)

1 small yellow onion, cut into eighths

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon extra-virgin oil

1 cup dry rolled oats

2 large eggs

1 pound lean ground turkey (or beef or bison)

13/4 cups pasta sauce, divided

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1 tablespoon Italian herb seasoning

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic.

Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside.

Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended.

Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture.

Commodore Stephen Decatur wrote one of the first recorded descriptions of sailors’ uniforms in 1813, describing the men on the frigates of the U.S. and Macedonia as wearing “glazed canvas hats with stiff brims, decked with ribbons, blue jackets buttoned loosely over waistcoats, and blue trousers with bell bottoms.” In the early 19th century before the U.S. Navy uniform was standardized, some sailors chose a style of wide trousers that had bell-shaped cuffs.

Senior needs help ge ing cats prepared for flea season

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The weather is getting warmer, and that means the flea invasion of my apartment will soon begin. I have two cats, and they suffer mightily through the summer -- as do I, with my legs covered in flea bites. I’m in my 70s and can’t give my cats flea baths. How can I get fleas under control? -- Jim G. in Acworth, Georgia

DEAR JIM: Yep! As the weather warms, especially in the southern states, the onslaught of fleas begins. Treating your pets for fleas before their eggs begin to hatch is especially important right now.

If you have issues that keep you from beginning flea treatment -- whether giving a monthly bath using a pet-safe shampoo, placing a flea collar, or applying a monthly topical flea treatment -- please ask for help. There are resources in your community. Call your area senior center (for you, that’s Cobb County, Georgia: www.cobbcounty.org/senior-services) and explain your dilemma; they can connect you with resources. You can also call your cats’ veterinarian and explain the situation; they can talk with you about solutions -- such as getting a trusted friend or family member to help.

Preventing fleas also requires treating or eliminating places where they can hide. Fleas love carpet; they’ll lay eggs in it, beginning the infestation cycle anew. Vacuum carpets weekly. If you have hardwood or laminate floors, run a dust mop as frequently as possible. Take up area rugs and have them cleaned. You may qualify for homemaker services -- these invaluable people handle light household chores like vacuuming, trash and laundry.

You have to make your apartment a hostile environment for fleas -- one they’ll struggle to live in.To do that, you’ve got to enlist every organization that can help.

A new edition of “Fighting Fleas” is coming, and 10 lucky readers will get a free, signed copy! To enter, email ask@pawscorner. com.© 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes:

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)

Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

Volunteering: Local environmental groups often sponsor cleanups at parks and waterfront attractions like beaches and lakes. Volunteering with such organizations is a great way to get outside and give back, and working with like-minded individuals can be a great way for seniors to meet new people. In addition, a national study sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2019 found that 88 percent of Senior Corps volunteers who initially reported a lack of companionship reported a decrease in feelings of isolation after volunteering.

DID YOU KNOW?

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Victor Volunteers Make STEAM Magic Happen

AT ANNUAL SUPER SCIENCE SATURDAY

Whether helping children build toothpick structures with marshmallows or teaching the finer points on robot driving, junior and senior high student volunteers led stations and science experiments at the Victor Central School District’s annual Super Science Saturday event on March 22 at the primary school building.

Hosted by the Victor Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), Super Science Saturday has been going on for so long, the volunteers who run it say they can’t even remember when it started. is STEAM-focused event (short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initially began to provide younger students opportunities to pique their interest in science, noted Carol Prescott, a Victor Board of Education member and past president of Partners in Education (PIE), a volunteer-run program that first imagined the event and is now part of Victor PTSA.

“Experiential learning has an impact,” Prescott said. “If you think about your own education, you might not remember your math class, but you remember the class field trip or the first time you looked into a microscope.”

Over the years, the event has evolved. While parent and adult volunteers oversaw stations in the early years, their availability waned, so organizers turned to students like Elani Kanellopoulos. A sophomore at Victor, she ran a busy station helping kids create blooming paper flowers, capillary action, walking water, and growing rainbows with water, markers, and paper towels.

Kanellopoulossaid,“Ithinkit’sgoodforthekidstogetextrascience. It’s hard for teachers to do something like this in a classroom.”

Kanellopoulos is also a member of Victor Key Club, which was critical to the event’s success.

Many of the student volunteers this year were from Key Club, a community service club at the high school level sponsored by Kiwanis International. e students clean up area parks, organize food drives, and assist with district needs. Community members looking for help with an event can fill out a page on the Key Club’s website requesting volunteers.

PHOTOS: T VAL, ELAINA, AND MILES LEGGETT OF VICTOR BUILD LEGOS. B RYAN AVERILL, GRADE 7, BRYSON MENDOLERA, GRADE 8, AND TEDDY PAPPAJOHN, GRADE 7, VOLUNTEERED FOR VICTOR ROBOTICS.

Gail Galewski and Anna Gerace, both juniors at Victor, managed the “Fun with magnets” table and have been in Key Club since freshman year. Galewski said she likes volunteering at events involving children most. Gerace joined Key Club for its “volunteering opportunities and interacting with the outside community.” Meanwhile, Delaney Pipes, student president of Victor Key Club, was busy keeping up with children who wanted to try making Magic Milk by mixing milk, food dye, and soap.

Other stations involved microscopes, stomp rockets, electrical circuits, and more. Nearby the LEGO-building station, the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) junior high robotics club helped younger students and visitors learn how to drive their robot through this past season’s game, which involved the robot picking up blocks and putting them in buckets at different height levels. Jeff Edwards, who volunteer runs the junior high FTC club at Victor, noted that it’s been a great experience for the club and the children, and noted “It’s a big recruiting event for us.”

Many stations were designed years ago, but occasionally students come up with their own ideas. “A high school student with an interest in the environment created a seed planting activity, and one year, students in the high school Medical Explorers Club created a station about what to expect at a visit to a doctor. We are open to new ideas and presenters willing to share their passion about a topic,” Prescott said.

Typically, the annual event hosts around 100 families, and the most recent event was no exception, with a constant buzz of activity as families filtered in and out for the two-hour event.

roughout the event’s history, Victor’s National Honor Society, Girl Scout troops, college students, and alumni have also lent a hand to make it a fun and successful event for all who attend.

Prescott reflected, “Having the older students more involved is a win-win. Younger students who attend get to interact with older students and many enjoy that opportunity to talk with the ‘big kids’ and see what it will be like when they are older. Sometimes for younger students, teens are more approachable than an adult. For the older students, it is an opportunity to work on leadership skills and be a role model. ey have a chance to give back to their community. A high school volunteer told me she remembered loving Super Science Saturday when she was younger and was so happy to help make it fun for younger students. And, of course, they all get to learn a little science.”

Perfume / Fragrance

Brighten someone’s day

My sweet adorable grandmother asked me to post a message on Facebook for her. She had dinner at the Redwood this evening with two of her girlfriends and a local anonymous gentleman paid for their meals. This act of kindness made her feel special and wonderful. When you brighten someone’s day - it passes that positivity on to others. Thank you!

Good Samaritan

I would like to extend a sincere Thank You with deep appreciation for a gentleman we know only as “Steve” from Kendall. On Saturday March 22, my husband & I purchased an area rug from the Lowes store in Brockport. We struggled to load it into our small Kia Soul SUV, unaware of its cumbersome fit in the vehicle. After several unsuccessful attempts, my husband went back into the store to seek assistance Several minutes later he was accompanied by a fellow shopper, who immediately offered to load the large rug into his van which had more room than our vehicle, however he had to keep the trunk ajar to hold it. He was kind & gracious enough to not only follow us home to our residence in Clarkson, about a 5 mile drive from the store, but also helped unload and carry into our house without accepting any monetary gesture my husband offered him. He even stayed and chatted with us, as our three rescue pooches welcomed him. He simply stated that he was paying it forward. Extraordinary kindness!

Brighter Vent

To all of you who work in public places: schools, apartment buildings, stores, DMV or other public areas. Please consider how much body spray perfume or cologne you wear as it really does affect a lot of people. COPD. ASTHMA. It’s seriously affects breathing and just gives others a headache. And then when you got two three or even more in the same area wearing it, it can be extreme. Thank you. I understand some of you just aren’t aware how badly it can affect others. Thank you for listening as this is such an important issue.

Fast Drivers

Several streets in the village are many blocks long but with no crosswalks. The 25 mph the state requires for school children walking to school has been disregarded for decades. The mayor refuses to do anything about the extreme speed every day, all day long, about 50-60 mph. Once a year a speed monitor is put out but no one ever slows down and no tickets are issued. Even school buses and cars speed. Pedestrians in general are in grave danger crossing streets at every light. The crossing light only lasts 18 sec and not everyone can cross that fast. A number of people have been hit and seriously injured. I was within 2 inches of me and my dogs getting killed. The cross light was on, all 3 of us were wearing reflective coats and flashing lights. I had to scream and flash my light in the drivers face to get his attention as he raced to make a left turn right into us. The mayor, nor the police department cared about my letter of complaint. He puts us at risk every day and has never cared.
