REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills.

A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.

Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly.

Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney.

Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation.

Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. ‘Cotton Ball’ Sensation Is a Sign of Neuropathy ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 63-year-old male diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control.

For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body.

In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported.

People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause.

Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear.

Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight.

ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing.

Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same.

The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing.

While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron.

However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

n January 2020, Rush Seniors president, Jim Wilkins, presented a check for $500 from the Rush Seniors to Mark Heinz and Audrey Buck from the Rush-Henrietta FISH (Friends In Service Here), and RHAFT (Rush Henrietta Area Food Terminal). Heinz and Buck were the featured speakers at the Rush Senior monthly meeting. The monetary gift is just one example of the gratitude area seniors feel for FISH and RHAFT. FISH / RHAFT, Inc. volunteers, serving RushHenrietta School District residents, dedicate themselves to helping their senior neighbors with certain transportation needs as well as providing food for them and their families. Filling these needs is necessary for the health of our community. FISH / RHAFT, Inc., a nonprofit organization, is associated with the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce and a mission of the Rush-Henrietta Interfaith League.

Joseph Gordon Young February 26, 2020 Mr. Joseph Gordon Young passed away peacefully on February 26, 2020, at the Veterans’ Home in Batavia, NY. Mr. Young leaves behind his loving wife Harriet of 68 years; three children, Patricia Jo Ferguson (Richard), Jeffery Young (LuAnn), and Larry Young; and four grandchildren, Veronica, Sarah, Ariel and Brandon Young.

Joe, as he was called, was born on August 30, 1931, in Corning, NY where he was the youngest of 5 children. Following high school graduation, he spent time in the Army, worked on a farm, then worked at Foster Wheeler Corp for 12 years, and Eastman Kodak for 27 years. He was a certified welder and welding instructor at both Foster Wheeler and Eastman Kodak.

Mr. Young was a skilled craftsman, focusing on woodworking. He rebuilt, remodeled and upgraded each home he owned over the past 60 years.

In recent years, Joe built wooden toys each year for distribution to local children. He was known for making wooden signs and cabinets in his community and created beautiful decorative wooden pieces. His wood shop was his second home. When he wasn’t working with wood, Joe was restoring his many old classic tractors.

A love of the outdoors was evident throughout Joe’s life. Camping was a main attraction for the family as his children were growing up. Annual vacations were always camping experiences. Starting with a tent, moving on to pop-up campers, a pull-behind camper, and, finally, a 5th-wheeler, these were useful equipment not only for vacationing but also a necessity when Joe was volunteering with the SOWERS. Throughout his lifetime, Joe was always active in his church community.

At one time, he and his wife assisted with a church plant, hosting the new congregation in their home every week.

After retirement, Joe utilized his trade skills and his love for volunteer mission work through working with the SOWERS group. With his wife, he traveled to many sites to refurbish Christian camps and schools over a ten-year period. They consider this a most rewarding and enjoyable time in their life together.

Mr. Young’s friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at a Memorial service to be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 7th at Peace Memorial Church on Buffalo Rd, North Chili, NY.
