granddaughter, recently married, came down with ulcerative colitis.

Right now, she is getting two Humira injections a month. She has lost so much weight and her diet is so limited. Do things normally get better? Will she ever be able to become pregnant? It has been about four months. She is presently seeing a GI doctor. Should she be under the care of a specialist? -- L.M.O.S. ANSWER: Ulcerative colitis is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases. The underlying cause is not known, but there is a familial predisposition. Women are more often diagnosed, and the leading time of diagnosis is in the 20s.

There is a wide range of severity, with some people doing well with topical treatments (suppositories or enemas), some needing oral medication, and people with more severe disease needing much more powerful agents, such as the adalimumab (Humira) your granddaughter needs. Fortunately, those kinds of drugs have approximately a 60% to 70% success rate.

Diet is important for people with UC of any severity; however, as the disease becomes better controlled it is likely that she will have a less restricted diet.

A GI doctor is a gastroenterologist, the specialist for inflammatory bowel diseases. There are some gastroenterologists who specialize even further, making IBD their area of particular expertise.

Pregnancy is certainly possible in women with IBD. However, they should be in remission before attempting pregnancy, and her medications may need to be adjusted for maximum safety.

There are many places to get additional information, but I recommend the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation website as an excellent starting point. It can be found at www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them?

-- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well.

The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules).

Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect.

Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. To All Residents of the Town of Wayland In light of all the news reports surrounding the coronavirus I want to assure you that we are closely following the situation and will respond and follow the directives as received from the County, State and Federal government. Based on the information we currently have we have made the following adjustments to town departments.

TOWN COURT: Word has been received that all courts in New York State will be closed as of 5pm on March 16, 2020 until May 1, 2020 or until the order from the State Unified Court System is lifted. This means that no one will be available at the Court House for any court related activities. If you wish to pay a fine you may do so by mail. However, if you have included a postage paid envelope for a receipt please be advised that no receipt will be sent until the court reopens.

TOWN ASSESSOR: The assessor’s office is closed to the public at this time.

You may call her at 728-9010 and leave a message. She will get back to you. You may also contact her by mail or by email at assessor@townofwayland.com.

Shawn Dunwoody: Mount Morris Mural to Legion of Legends

C

reativity flows around Shawn Dunwoody like a living aura.

The self-described director, producer, designer, maker, influencer, developer, and artist leads Dunwoode Visual Consulting and a group called the Fruitbelt Project. He also collaborates with communities to create local murals and creates the Rochester-inspired comic book series, Legion of Legends.

“The creative process is how I approach things,” shared Dunwoody. “It surrounds us in every breath. Art is a way to connect with individuals and surrounds us in every way, shape and form.”

Dunwoody added that everyday items like street signs and even the very way a town is planned is an extension of that creative community. “It is a way to connect with communities and families to shape the future,” he added.

Dunwoody recently completed the colorful mural on the corner of Main and Chapel Streets in Mount Morris which embodies the vibrant complexity of the town’s history and culture. “I first sat down with the lead team of folks in the community,” shared Dunwoody. “I couldn’t have community participation due to space and level of detail, but people could share ideas with me.” Dunwoody explained that while he had a preliminary concept, the mural grew and developed along the way.

He recalls being impressed by the town’s leap of faith. “It was trust,” he said. “When I presented my project, it wasn’t a finished piece. To have someone trust me to do this without absolutely knowing the outcome was incredible.”

“Women’s rights and the Haudenosaunee, photos people showed me, the town’s Puerto Rican population and the Coqui... all these were stories and connection points,” he recalled. “I was learning and figuring out what would go where.” The result is a stunning” Not everyone embraced the project at first, but as Dunwoody welcomed and incorporated input during his project, many came to believe this mural would be beneficial. These feelings were further strengthened when residents were invited to add their signatures to the mural, recording the voices which had shaped it and made it a part of their community.

This aspect of art-helping people find their point of engagement and connection– particularly interests Dunwoody. “I think that is what it is really all about,” he explained. “Feeling that one point of connection with a creative moment. That is why I engage the community as much as possible.”

Speaking of community connections, Dunwoody has also launched a new twist on superheroes, his Legion of Legends. This groundbreaking comic book series centers around the well-known historical figures and landmarks of Rochester. These include such people as Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and George Eastman while making reference to iconic buildings in Downtown Rochester, Genny and K3G, the Red Wings’ based Red and the Amerks’ inspired Moose, the Royals, even garbage plates combined with plate tectonics!

“Everyone has been a superhero at some point,” observed Dunwoody. “We can address issues like nuclear weapons and racial divide if it is put in the context of the superhero world. It can become tangible and accessible. I am working with a writer to address current issues like human trafficking but in the context of slavery combined with someone who can fly.”

Dunwoody has visited schools to share his work, and students have taken an interest. “They want to know how my characters got Shawn Dunwoody with cutout of Legion of Legends character, Frederick Douglass, during his visit to their powers. For example, Susan B. Byron-Bergen Central School, Photo Gretchen Spittler Anthony has superwoman strength and impenetrable skin. Students drew their own superheroes as well, which was cool to see.”

Dunwoody wants to be an example for students. “I want to be what I wanted to see when I was little,” he clarified. “When I was a kid, I wanted to see that it was possible to do what I am doing now.

For kids who want to be in a creative field, those role models typically aren’t coming to their school. I want to let young folks know that there are creative career paths that can be attained.

Hold tight and don’t be afraid to dream!”

Dunwoody insists each person has creativity and is uniquely valuable. “You write your name, don’t you? That’s a drawing!” he exclaimed. “You dressed yourself this morning? You’re a fashion designer! Even each walk is individual unto itself and has its own beat.”

“To deprive the universe of your smile or your being is to rob the universe of the once-in-a-lifetime piece of artwork that will never exist again,” he continued with conviction. “You will only exist once in the universe, so be a unique, creative force for change and be beautiful.

Be that one moment in time that will never be seen again!”

Dunwoody is currently planning projects in Avon, Livonia and a second project in Mount Morris. All of these will be community projects where everyone is welcome to join.

How to practice social distancing during a pandemic

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel --* On March 22, 1765, in an effort to raise funds to pay off debts, the British government passes the Stamp Act. It levied a direct tax on all materials printed for commercial and legal use in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and dice. * On March 21, 1804, the Napoleonic Code is approved in France. The Code strengthened the authority of men over their families, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens also were granted equal rights under the law, but colonial slavery was reintroduced. * On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” is published. The novel was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.”

Social distancing protocols encourage people to avoid crowds, such as those at concerts and sporting events.

As COVID-19 continued to spread across the world, it quickly became evident that the public would have to take drastic measures to slow the transmission. In addition to practicing generalized sanitation and good hygiene, people in some of the hardest-hit clusters were advised to take additional, more aggressive measures. Quarantines and travel restrictions were implemented, and the term "social distancing" became a buzzword.

Social distancing involves people keeping a physical distance from each other during disease outbreaks in order to slow transmission rates. Social distancing also is employed to lessen the impact of the disease on the medical care system, which quickly can become overwhelmed with a high number of cases presenting in a short period of time.

In best-case scenarios, social distancing also may enable a few people to avoid infection until a vaccine is available.

So how can people socially distance themselves? Here are some of the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other leading health groups. · Opt out of group events. Steer clear of events, whether meetings, sports games, conferences, and other gatherings where large amounts of people congregate together. · Stick to non-contact greetings. Avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes. Substitute a smile, a wave or a bumping of elbows, instead. · Work from home. Many companies are now equipped to allow employees to work from home all the time or a portion of the time. Businesses can encourage employees to stay home and utilize the internet to get their work done. · Alter shopping schedules. Try to visit stores in the early morning or late at night when they are less likely to be crowded. · Make changes in worship practices. Celebrants may have to make modifications to the way they worship. The Catholic Diocese of Trenton, NJ, recently advised all diocesan churches to halt the distribution of the most precious blood (wine) from communal chalices; encouraged clergy and eucharistic ministers to sanitize their hands before

distributing the eucharist; and parishioners to avoid contact during the sign of peace.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library…

Wayland Free Library is closed effective immediately. The decision to close is only one part of the broader public health attempt to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Board of Library Trustees will work with Library and Town staff to determine what, if any services, may continue to be available, such as electronic and digital resources, ordering and picking up books.

We urge ALL residents to evaluate their own health and determine if they are feeling mildly ill with a head cold, headache, cough and/or experiencing any CDC identified symptoms of COVID-19. If you are feeling any symptoms, we advise you to contact the Wayland Health Department at the Coronavirus Hotline 508-358-6805 and your primary care physician for guidance.

A delightful surprise on March 5, 2020 at Cracker Barrel, Henrietta when my lunch bill was paid by someone unknown to me.

I have heard of this happening to others but never expected to be the recipient of such a thoughtful gesture. It made my day in fact, probably the whole week! And I certainly will “Pay It Forward!”

Community members are supporting each other by offering hard-to-find items, support and resources, filling requests for help and just general kindness. All Cindy from the safety of home.

My son is heavily into collecting basketball cards, but we have not been able to find any. The shelves are always bare, and the stock man said that grown men are following him and buying up all the cards for eBay value. Thanks. I bet when you grown men were little, the grown men at that time let you enjoy card collecting. I bet you even had a binder full! Thursday the 12th, we had a service call with Spectrum because of difficulties we were experiencing. I was very hesitant because it was quite bothersome not having internet and phone service. I didn’t know what to expect. We were at our wit’s end. Well, I was very pleased with the TQA representative they sent to our home. Ryan was right on spot, courteous, and did indeed find the problems.

He rectified them, explained what was going on, and I am very pleased and satisfied. He renewed my faith in Spectrum. Thank you very much for your help, Ryan.

This is for the people who have a pet cat that they don’t want anymore and decide to drop it off on my property to let it roam because I have a lot of barns.

In the past, I know one cat was taken to the hospital for mental health issues, one was taken to jail for trespassing, and two were eaten by coyotes. I’m not sure about the others. Now if you can’t afford to put an ad in the newspaper to give your pet a new home for free or if you can’t take it to the Humane Society or Lollypop Farm, then knock on my door, tell me the cat's name and drop off some food once a month.

I am an elderly person with many underlying medical conditions. I was in [local store] last week in [local town] getting my final medications before I socially distanced to protect myself. I was wearing my mask to protect me, and two young men
