doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence.

Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however.

Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful.

Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot.

I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”?

ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.

Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days.

The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting.

GREEK SALAD IN JARS Courtesy of Simply Recipes • Makes: 4 salads Salad Dressing: Salads: 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/4 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved pinch of black pepper, plus additional, to taste 1/2 large English cucumber, sliced 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 yellow or orange bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 cup California black ripe olives 5 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup (4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese 4 pint-size canning jars with lids 4 small handfuls fresh baby spinach or other dark, leafy greens 4 pita bread rounds, halved (optional) To prepare dressing: In small bowl, whisk together vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano and honey.

Gradually whisk in oil. Taste. Add additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Divide dressing between four pint jars.

To assemble salads: Divide onion between four jars. Divide tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, olives and feta cheese between jars. Pack remaining space with spinach, compressing leaves slightly.

Secure lids and refrigerate up to two days.

To serve: Empty salads into bowls and toss with dressing. Serve with pita bread.

Servings: 24

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 5 ounces Brie cheese 1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1/4 cup pecans, chopped Heat oven to 400 F. Grease mini muffin pan.

Press seams of puff pastry sheet together. Cut sheet into quarters then each quarter into six pieces.

Use rolling pin to flatten each piece of pastry into square shape. Place one square into each muffin cup.

Put 1/2 teaspoon brie, 1 teaspoon apple butter and 1/2 teaspoon chopped pecans into each muffin cup.

Bake 13-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic.

Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper.

Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender.

Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks.

Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender.

To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook.

Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired.

44th Annual Used Book Sale Speaking of the Used Book Sale, it’s always held during Dogwood Week, May 13-18th at the Library.

All items in the sale have been donated by community members or culled from the library’s collection. Books range from A to Z in both fiction and non-fiction, adult and children’s titles. In addition, there will be assorted videos, CDs and puzzles available too. Sale hours will coincide with regular library hours. We will need volunteers again this year to act as cashiers and to help re-stock the tables. Training is provided and we are recruiting for new workers. On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn?

When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!

How was this discovered?

Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light.

1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt by Dinky Doo Petting Zoo a Success

T

he atmosphere inside Dinky Doo Petting Zoo was alive with excitement and anticipation which the drizzling rain could not dampen. Families had begun to trickle in just before noon, and several arrived before 12:30pm, although the Easter Egg Hunt was not scheduled until 1pm. Families were welcome to line up for free face painting as they waited. They could also walk down a nearby hall area to visit the Easter Bunny and pet furry guinea pigs.

Costumed characters were there to greet them, including a clown, Pooh Bear, the Cat in the Hat, a chicken and, of course, the Easter Bunny.

Parents bought tickets in an Easter 50/50 raffle and perused the merchandise around the store area. Tack, furniture, stuffed animals, jewelry and more lined the walls and stood along the edges of the main room.

As the time for the hunt drew near, the room continued to fill with families. Children between the ages of 2 and 9-years-old were welcome to participate in the hunt itself, although children of all ages came along for the excitement and the petting zoo. Dinky Doo Petting Zoo Owner, Cherie Carter, began announcing the time until the hunt, which only served to heighten the anticipation. Each participating child was handed a pretty plastic bag in which to collect eggs, and each bag was numbered.

Cherie reminded children to hold onto their bags as each number corresponded to a special prize which they would receive after the hunt.

At last, with the main room packed full of eager children and their families, it was time.

Everyone poured outside to the pine trees blossoming with brightly colored eggs. The Easter Egg Hunt area was cordoned off with yellow tape so that everyone knew where to look. Young children were invited to the front, along with their parents if needed, and a few guidelines were put in place. Then, they were off, scurrying everywhere and quickly pulling egg after egg from the trees. Little children, in the arms of their parents, reached deep into the branches for hidden eggs others left behind, their faces full of delight.

At last, there were no more eggs to be found, and guests made their way towards a decorated room set up with tables where many of them opened their eggs. This room, conveniently located off the main hallway, is available for rent on such occasions as birthday parties, for example.

Families then had the option of visiting the petting zoo for a small cost, and many did so.

Petting zoo guests were given small bags of food for the rabbits and the pigs. First, when children entered, they were met by sheep, goats,

llamas and donkeys. They made their way to a separate space at the back of the room to find many rabbits eager for food. These rabbits were friendly and were willing to be petted in exchange for the tasty veggies the children carried. Children then moved out-of-doors into a play area surrounded by more enclosed animals, such as peacocks, donkeys and even pigs, their little tails wagging happily, which gently took veggies from visitors’ hands.

As people made their way back inside, the winning number for the 50/50 raffle was called, and the winner exclaimed with delight as she made her way to the front. Bag numbers were being called and prizes given to the children, including bubbles, books and stuffed animals. As each child received his or her prize in turn, families began to make their way home.

Guests truly seemed to enjoy and appreciate the free Easter Egg Hunt, face painting and prizes which Cherie Carter and Dinky Doo Petting Zoo hosted for their community. The event was successful, a highlight of the season in spite of the rain. One guest was overheard commenting how pleased they were to be able to attend this event even with the rain. This feeling, that even the rain was more enjoyable when Easter Egg hunting at Dinky Dooís, was the sentiment of the crowd that day.

Around 100 children participated in this hunt, exceeding all expectations. Cherie Carter could not be more thrilled. The children had fun hunting for eggs and also enjoyed the petting zoo. Dinky Doo Petting Zoo would like to thank the community for making this event such a huge success and hopes to see everyone again soon.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4.

What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it.

To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions.

1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood.

2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives.

4. What are the signs and symptoms?

• Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure.

Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor.

5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one.

6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org.
