In Avon, a striking obelisk dedicated in 1877 remains the centerpiece of Memorial Day activities. These monuments were paid for by the public, nickel by nickel, bake sale by bake sale, making them community-built testaments of gratitude. Featuring these monuments in Memorial Day observances connects today’s generation with those who built them.

Do your part. If you’re traveling by air, confirm everything you’ll need to get through security and onto the plane as quickly as possible. Make sure passports and other forms of identification are current. Pack bags wisely so there are no surprises at check-in time. The more details you tend to in advance of your departure, the less stressful your travel day will be.

BEAT THE TRAVEL CROWDS THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Consideralocaldestination. Another way to beat the crowds is to avoid joining them. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration estimates that roughly 40 percent of the American population lives in coastal communities. That means more than 120 million Americans can drive to coastal areas without having to traverse potentially congested highways and interstates. Stay local for busy travel weekends like Memorial Day and reserve longer trips for other times of the year when fewer people are on the road.

Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

MASONRY & BASEMENT

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

FAIRPORT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

Located along the Erie Canal, this peaceful park in Fairport features a striking black granite wall engraved with the names of area service members. It honors not just those who served in combat, but all veterans. Opened in 2007, the site includes flags from each branch of the military and is surrounded by benches for reflection. Each year, Memorial Day ceremonies here draw a large crowd, a space created to remind a new generation that sacrifice lives in every town.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES

Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year.

CREATE MORE CLOSET SPACE WITHOUT MAJOR RENOVATIONS

The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing thatnolongerfitsoritemsthatcanbestoredelsewhereshouldberemoved from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.

Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY

Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

ROLL-OFF

DIY MEMORIAL DAY LUMINARIES

Honor fallen heroes by creating handmade luminaries to line your front walkway, porch, or driveway. Use clean mason jars, red/white/blue tissue paper, and LED tea lights. Kids can help cut tissue into small pieces and mod-podge them onto the jars. Add a small tag with the name of a veteran you’d like to remember or simply write “Thank You” or “We Remember.” At dusk, the soft glow is a moving tribute that neighbors and passersby will appreciate.

“Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it all into words is all that is necessary. ”

FLAGS AND FRONT PORCHES

One of the most meaningful ways to participate in Memorial Day is to fly an American flag.Whether it’s a full-sized flag on a front porch in Caledonia or a small grave marker in Mount Morris, the sight of red, white, and blue fluttering in the breeze is a quiet tribute that says: We remember.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY

Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrantsof MemorialDay.Thatdebate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Retirement: Now at?

Some of us are new to retirement and the questions quickly become: Now what? What do I do with my days? Do I continue to set the alarm for the same time in the mornings?

If you planned in detail for your retirement and have a long list of things you intend to do, you know where to begin.

But the questions about what to do with our retired days can be poignant for those who perhaps didn’t have a choice about retirement. Maybe there were health considerations. Maybe there were expectations of retirement upon reaching a certain age in a certain career. But for whatever reason, here’s retirement, ready or not. Now what?

Start with a piece of paper and a pen. Make a list, the longer the better, of every interest you have. Ideally, somewhere on that list are the makings of worthwhile activities that are physical, social and mental.

Here are some random possibilities: explore photography, teach swimming at the YMCA, write a novel, knit or crochet hats and mittens for the local Santa fund next winter, create a family scrapbook with genealogy information and photos for the next generation, play pickleball at the rec center, become a Citizen Scientist (see CitizenScience.gov), join a walking group, take a pottery class with a grandchild.

Then there are the all-important brain-stretcher activities: learn to play piano or guitar (or brush up on old skills), take a college course, play chess online, take a computer class to upgrade your skills, learn a language online (see Duolingo.com), read a book a week or start a book club.

My personal list includes dogs at the animal shelter. There are lots of dogs who need to be taken on adventure walking afternoons to pick up their spirits. I can do that a few times a week.

1 pound cuttlefish, cut into pieces

1 pound lobster tail meat, cut into pieces

Salt, to taste

3 cups chicken stock

1 cup dry white wine

2 cups Arborio rice

2 dozen fresh mussels

2 to 3 dozen fresh clams

1 tablespoon saffron

1. In a large paella pan, sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium heat. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the squid, cuttlefish, lobster, and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring, for a minute or so more.

2. In a saucepan, bring the chicken stock and wine to a boil. As it boils, add the rice to the fish mixture in the paella pan and blend thoroughly. Ladle three-fourths of the boiling stock over the rice and bring to a boil. Season the rice with more salt to taste. Reduce the heat to low and mix well, distributing rice evenly in the paella pan. Continue to cook the rice for 18 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. While the rice is cooking, heat about 1 inch of water and a drizzle of olive oil in a separate sauté pan, then add the mussels. Steam until the mussels open, then transfer to the paella pan with a slotted spoon. Steam and transfer the clams in the same way. Take 1 cup of the clam water and whisk together with the saffron in a small bowl. Add to the paella pan, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes more. Serve the paella directly from the paella pan.

NATIONAL SCAVENGER HUNT DAY

Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. Elsa Maxwell was dubbed “hostess with the mostest” and had an affinity for throwing luxurious and entertaining parties. She often organized scavenger hunts for the guests that involved roaming around town, seeking objects from a list.

OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT

Keep licensing up to date. Licensing will keep dogs registered in the area and help have current contact information available. Pet owners often license and microchip their pets to ensure safety all around.

Should indoor cats wear flea collars?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: At my cat’s last veterinary visit, it was recommended that she wear a flea collar or get a monthly flea treatment. “Belle” is a completely indoor cat and has never had fleas. Why do I need to prevent her from getting them? -- Carla G., Gulf Shores, Alabama

DEAR CARLA: While it seems totally reasonable to not treat Belle for fleas, there is always a risk of getting them. This is the same logic behind routine vaccinations -- it’s unlikely that an indoor cat will be exposed to rabies, but there is always a chance.

I’ll give you a personal example. Last fall, I took care of a friend’s dog for a few weeks while they were away dealing with a family emergency. On the first day, I noticed that “Kerry” was chewing on his tail and his hair was almost gone at the base of his tail. I knew right away that he had fleas, and a visual check confirmed it. All of my pets are treated for fleas, even though my cat stays indoors. With my friend’s permission, I treated Kerry with a topical flea treatment and kept him separated from the other pets for a few days until no live fleas could be found in his fur. I also monitored all my pets for fleas during his visit.

I hadn’t planned on Kerry arriving with fleas, but his owner had forgotten to give him his monthly flea treatment for a couple of months. This unplanned situation could have been a real problem for me and my pets.

There’s an old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that is certainly the case with fleas, which can be hard to eliminate from your home once they get a foothold. There are many options today -- not just collars -- to prevent fleas from getting on your cat. Talk to your vet about the treatment they recommend for Belle.

Please don’t pull in close behind the automatic car washes. I can tell you when you prepaid every month and you have to go through and trigger it to your windshield tag, it never works the first time. I have to back up and try it again. With somebody so close behind me I can’t back up and I’m stuck there. In other words, it never works the first time; you have to back up and try it again every single time. Please give us space.

Act of Kindness

Recently, while dining at T’s Restaurant in Webster for breakfast, I had to help my husband sit down in the booth, and cut his pancakes and bacon for him. He has some disabilities. When we finished, the waitress came by and said that we were all set regarding the bill. I looked at her, puzzled, and she told us that another patron had noticed how I had cared for my husband, and paid our bill! We were so taken aback by that gesture. Our deepest gratitude and thanks to that kind soul. May God bless you!

Auction Never Paid for My Goods

An auctioneer came to my home and told me he could sell all the things I had to sell, giving me 75% of the money he received and he’d keep only 25% for himself. I said good. He seemed like a decent man. October 2024, he loaded a large trailer with all my stuff, including a bedroom with all the furniture. They were in my garage about four hours taking everything they could. To this day, I haven’t gotten anything from him. I do have pictures of all the stuff they took. I don’t know what to do at this time. Do not trust anyone who comes to your house telling you they want to auction off your goods as they did mine. Be aware and beware.

Avon American Legion Post Honors Fallen WWI Soldier, Joseph Gallipeau

e Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 was named the Avon Post for Joseph Gallipeau, an Avon resident killed in action in France in 1918. His biography will be presented at the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26th.

Joseph Leo Gallipeau 1898-1918

David and Viola Carrie Gallipeau of Lakeville welcomed their third child and first son, Joseph Leo Gallipeau, on October 12, 1898. ey moved to Avon when Joseph was about 10 years old and Joseph lived on Wadsworth Avenue for many years with his little brother, Spencer, his two older sisters, Ruth and Eunice, and his younger sister, Sophronia. David was a barber in town and Viola was a homemaker. Joseph worked as a messenger boy for the Railroad as a teenager. e family lost Spencer to a car accident in 1915 when he was 10.

On July 15, 1917 at 18 years old, Joseph enlisted in the Regular Army Division at the beginning of the World War and was trained at Camp Syracuse. He was one of the first Avon boys to enlist. On September 7, 1917, he went overseas on the USS Huron as a Private First Class. In October, while stationed in France, he turned 19. He was assigned to Company D, 23rd Infantry 2nd Division.

During his service, Joseph was in the trenches for many months before he was killed in action on June 6, 1918 at Belleau Wood on the deadliest day of e Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1 - June 26, 1918). Joseph and so many others that day gave their lives in a wheat field on their way to Belleau Wood. His mother received a telegram informing her of his death on July 24, 1918.

In 1919, e American Legion first applied for an Avon charter and chose the name Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294. American Legion Posts are named for a veteran(s) from the community who gave their life in service to their country. Post 294 received their permanent charter in February 1925.

Joseph was first buried in France, but his body was brought back to America aboard the U.S.A.T. Cantigny in late September 1921. e body was then brought to the home of his parents on Wadsworth Avenue. A full military funeral was held on a Saturday morning at St. Agnes Church in the charge of the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post, including a mounted guard of honor, a firing squad from Troop M and the 54th Regiment Band of Rochester. e Legion, members of the Women’s Relief Corps, the G.A.R., Spanish War Veterans, and men who were on the border were in line. Schoolchildren also marched. Joseph’s body was reburied in Avon’s St. Agnes Cemetery near his little brother, Spencer.

On August 26, 1928, the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 applied for a headstone from the War Department for Joseph L. Gallipeau. It was delivered to the St. Agnes Cemetery in January 1929 and placed next to the family headstone.

Not Everyone Who Has Artery Blockages Requires Surgery

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have HIV and pulmonary hypertension. I was part of a research study, and a scan found blockages of about 50% in my carotid arteries. I’ve never had any symptoms or a stroke. Do I need to have surgery? -- V.P.

ANSWER: In general, screening for blockages in the carotid arteries that provide blood flow to the brain is not recommended, but occasionally, I do see people who get the diagnosis made as part of a study or as a result of a diagnostic test that was performed for some other reason. Screening means that there are no present symptoms, and the management of asymptomatic blockages is different from symptomatic ones. Not everybody with blockages needs surgical intervention. Guidelines recommend against surgery in people with no symptoms who have less than 70% stenosis. Only when the blockage is greater than 70% is surgery considered.

Medical treatment is effective at reducing the risk of a stroke and includes a high dose of a potent statin agent, aspirin, the careful control of high blood pressure and diabetes (if appropriate), quitting smoking, a healthy diet (such as Mediterraneanstyle), regular exercise, and weight reduction in some people.

HIV itself increases the risk of stroke by about 40% compared to people without HIV, so it is appropriate to be more aggressive at reducing risk factors. This is similar to what we see in people with chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, who have a higher heart disease and stroke risk than what would be expected based on their other risk factors.

Your HIV provider may wish to consult an expert in cardiovascular disease prevention to help you reduce your stroke risk, although many HIV experts are also skilled primary care doctors themselves. Keeping HIV under control (ideally with no detectable virus) may help reduce inflammation and consequently bring down the additional risk of heart attack and stroke associated with HIV.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My spouse is frustrated by a nagging case of plantar fasciitis. It’s been continuing for five or six months now. No amount of stretching, icing or resting seems to help. They are considering using a plantar fasciitis sock device that holds the foot in a specific position to provide relief. I am wondering if you could provide any other suggestions on how to reduce or eliminate this problem. -- M.R.

ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is among the most common causes of foot pain, with nearly 1% of people complaining of plantar fasciitis pain during the previous month. Inflammation and pain most commonly occur at the bottom of the foot, just in front of the heel. The pain is often worst during the first step in the morning.

Rest and cushioned shoes or heel pads are helpful for most people. I am cautious about recommending stretching, especially when the pain is severe, as overdoing stretching can make things worse.Still, most people find stretching to be of benefit. When symptoms do not get resolved with conservative management, I refer patients to a podiatrist. Some people just take a long time to heal, but 80% are better within a year. When conservative measures have failed to bring relief, your spouse’s podiatrist might consider an injection of a steroid.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

MOMENTS IN TIME

The History Channel

On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe.

PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT

Plan your transportation. If a night out entails enjoying a few alcoholic beverages, then arrange for safe transportation home in advance. Utilize a ride-sharing service or taxi company; otherwise, figure out who will be the designated sober driver. Groups of friends may want to pay for the sober driver’s meal as a token of their appreciation.

AccordingtoGallup’s2021EconomyandPersonalFinancesurvey,theaverageindividual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire.Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting,as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs.By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
