Being Insistent About a Scan Saves the Life Of a Cancer Patient &body mind

DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one. Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.

This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.

It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. -- F.B.

ANSWER: : Although doctors should read these carefully and act on them appropriately, important findings can be overlooked sometimes. You are absolutely right that you are your own best health advocate, and you did the right thing by bringing the finding up to your new doctor.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PTSD

Who can get PTSD? - The APA notes that exposure to an upsetting traumatic event is necessary before a diagnosis of PTSD can be made. However, that exposure can be indirect. For example, police officers who are repeatedly exposed to details of heinous crimes can develop PTSD even though they are not victims of those crimes and did not witness them. But the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that individuals are more likely to develop PTSD if they are directly exposed to a trauma or injured.

Tips for Keeping Kids Safe During Home Renovations

Home renovations, especially larger ones, can be risky for young children due to their natural curiosity. To keep kids safe, it’s essential to communicate with contractors about the presence of children in the home. Contractors can take extra precautions by sealing off rooms and keeping tools and debris out of reach, particularly at night. Additionally, parents should set clear boundaries by informing their children that certain areas are off-limits and explaining the reasons behind this rule to make it more effective.

Parents should also lead by example, avoiding any temptation to sneak into renovation spaces when contractors are gone. If you’re curious about the project, schedule a tour when the kids are at school or with you. At the end of each day, ask the contractor to turn off the electricity in rooms being worked on to prevent any accidental injuries. Once the renovation is complete, hiring a professional cleaning service ensures that all remnants of the project, such as nails or debris, are removed before the kids use the space. These steps can help ensure a safe environment during the renovation process.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

PREVENT DOG-RELATED LAWN DAMAGE

Work with a dog trainer. Dog trainers might be able to work with dogs so they only urinate in certain areas of the yard, greatly reducing the damage they can cause to a lawn. Trainers also might help curb digging and clawing behaviors that can damage lawns as well as gardens.

DR. TEMPLE GRANDIN WITH “ANT AUNT” SUSAN HERRNSTEIN’S FAMILY AT THE AUTISM NATURE TRAIL

r. Temple Grandin

FIRST ADVISOR TO THE ANT VISITS LETCHWORTH AND PERRY HIGH SCHOOL

e ANT Alliance, Inc. welcomed Dr. Temple Grandin to Letchworth State Park on March 28th for her first visit to e Autism Nature Trail ( e ANT). Dr. Grandin was the initial expert resource contacted in 2014 by the late Susan Herrnstein of Silver Lake and Loren Penman of Batavia about the idea of creating a nature trail specifically designed for persons with autism spectrum disorder.

ey described Letchworth’s setting, with the moving water of the Genesee River and the abundance of pine forests, and relayed stories they were gathering that told of amplified calming effects for many visitors, especially those with autism.

Dr. Grandin, who is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and world-renowned autism advocate, was intrigued by the concept. She called Penman and identified seven parameters for developing such a trail, including its location, design, safety considerations, amenities, and staffing. Herrnstein and Penman never strayed from these parameters as they forged ahead.

What followed over the next seven years was planning, fundraising, designing, building, equipping, staffing and endowing e Autism Nature Trail ( e ANT) at Letchworth State Park. e Autism Nature Trail ( e ANT) is a one-mile ADA-compliant loop with eight interactive stations located in Letchworth State Park, closest to the Castile entrance, and less than five minutes inside the Park.

“Her positive reaction means the world to all of us who put our hearts and souls into the Trail.”
SERVENTI,

Gail Serventi, a retired speech and language pathologist with a background in working with autistic children, joined Herrnstein and Penman, and the three became known as e ANT Aunts.

As the project progressed over the years, the Ants kept Dr. Grandin apprised of the Trail’s progress. Penman and Serventi were able to show her in person the schematic design produced by Perry’s in.site: architecture before construction drawings were dra ed. Regular emails and an occasional phone call kept Grandin in the loop right up until e ANT’s opening to the public on October 1, 2021.

Although invited to both the groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremonies, COVID made Grandin’s attendance problematic. Sadly, Herrnstein, who passed away several weeks before the Trail’s ribbon cutting, never got to meet Grandin.

When Penman went to hear Grandin speak in Syracuse in 2023, she took photos of the completed project and again invited her to visit Letchworth and the Trail. “I’ll get there in 2025,” said Grandin, who still was making up postponed speaking engagements post-pandemic.

March 2025, Grandin was able to visit e ANT and learn how her very specific advice was incorporated into the Trail’s design and operation. “You’ve done a great thing,” she told Penman and Serventi. “Now you have to maintain it.” She emphasized the importance of upkeep, especially since e ANT is not part of the New York State budget. Grandin commented that she thinks more projects of this magnitude will have to come from local efforts.

“Having her understand how much we have taken her advice to heart was really satisfying,” says Serventi, who now chairs the allvolunteer Board, ANT Alliance, the non-profit established to provide stewardship and oversight for the Trail. “Her positive reaction means the world to all of us who put our hearts and souls into the Trail.”

LEFT ANT ALLIANCE CHAIR GAIL SERVENTI AND VICE CHAIR LOREN PENMAN WITH DR.

IN THE PERRY HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY

“Susan strongly believed in the adage, ‘Nothing about us without us,’” said Penman, referring to the importance of incorporating advice from persons on the spectrum in developing the Trail. Herrnstein’s two sons and eldest grandchild were part of a small group that met with Grandin at e ANT.

Grandin also spoke informally with Penman, Serventi and several others in the library at Perry High School prior to a public talk on livestock behavior, production, and product quality which was arranged by the Wyoming County Cooperative Extension.

All persons are welcome to visit and enjoy e ANT any time that the Park is open.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS

“Appreciation
” Margaret Cousins

Trainers train owners as well. Trainers won’t just work with pets, but also with pet owners. Obedience trainers will work with pets to teach them how to behave while also teaching owners various ways to positively reinforce the animals. This is a great way for owners to get hands-on experience and learn proper obedience training techniques, which are not always as easy to learn as owners may think.

Is this puppy ready for a long hike?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a beautiful pup at about 3 months old this winter. Now that the weather is warming up and “Blondie” is about 6 months old, I can’t wait to start going on hikes with her. How far can a puppy that age walk? Do you have any safety tips? – Carl J., via email

DEAR CARL: Blondie sounds like an amazing pup! With the correct training, she will eventually be able to accompany you on some hikes – but not this season.

Puppies at 6 months of age should only take limited walks, ranging from five to 10 minutes max, on level ground. Don’t take them farther – pushing them too soon can cause a host of physical problems because their growth plates haven’t fused.

Most experts recommend lengthening walks gradually starting from about 9 months. For longer distances over uneven ground, and when training dogs to carry their own panniers, wait until they are 12 to 18 months old.

So, you won’t be able to take Blondie with you on day hikes this year – unless you carry her. There are special “sport sacks” just for carrying small- to medium-size dogs. Think of it as a fitness challenge for you, and a way for your pup to learn to love the outdoors.

In the meantime, you can work on Blondie’s obedience training. It’s critical that she respond immediately when you call her, especially out on hikes. She should also be well socialized to people and other dogs – this prevents a lot of grief on the trail. Right now is the perfect time to do that, and to bond with your dog so that you have fun whether you’re outdoors or not.

Car Accident Witness

[A couple months ago] my vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road while I was stopped at a signal light. Because my focus was on the red light I did not see the vehicle coming toward me going thru the red light and was blindsided at the impact, with the car then continuing on to collide head on with a 3rd vehicle. She was kind enough to follow this vehicle for quite a distance knowing it would cause an accident and to speak with me and the police as a witness. I am extremely grateful for the time she spent to set the record straight in which some explanations as to who is at fault or what actually happened can be twisted around by some insurance companies.

Grave Concerns

On a recent visit to my parent’s grave to place an Easter wreath, I was saddened to see so many dead X-mas wreaths and plants still on graves in April. We’re blessed to be able to leave flowers, flags and objects as some cemeteries don’t allow it at all. People need to be more considerate and respectful of the deceased and their families and remove the dead plants in a timely manner or replace any faded artificial flowers and flags. The presence of litter detracts from the peaceful and solemn atmosphere of the cemetery.

Brighter Vent

To those of you who are standing right at the doors of an elevator waiting to get on, please allow people to get off the elevator before you try to get on. It does no good for you to hurry and get on the elevator before people get off. Please use elevator etiquette.

BREEZE THROUGH SPRING CLEANING

Spring heralds a season of fresh starts and growth -- and what better way to start anew than with a little spring cleaning?

Taking the time to get organized can make all the difference -- and it can make the most cluttered closets and dirtiest corners a breeze to clean. With the right tools in hand, organizing any messy space becomes a mangeable task. You can save time and money by getting cleaning supplies, like dusters, sponges and automated air fresheners.

Richard:

I wouldn’t be able to do it, as I represent President Donald Trump, and actions like this always present potential conflicts of interest if I represented you and President ump. I am a bit out of the loop on who knows their way around Washington. I wouldn’t know who to use, myself.

“Richard, could you help us? You’re so strong. We had one can of vegetable beef soup for the month of March for my family of 5. We took a 5-gallon pail of water and dumped it into the can of soup. We began to believe it’s a way of life now in this country to have to eat soup 3 times a day. My family and I start laughing when we see a vegetable floating around on top of the water. Our mother died because we couldn’t buy her insulin. Can you help us? You’re so strong. ey told us that if we try to come near the US Department of Agriculture building or if we try to go near any of the farmers on the county committee that they would sell our cows and equipment. ey told us if we try to go near the US Department of Agriculture building or any of the farmers on the county committee that they would sell our farm and home. Stanley, no one can tell you you can’t go into a government building. ese government employees don’t own these government buildings. Richard, they told us if we try to go near the US Department of Agriculture building or any of the farmers on the county committee that they would sell the clothes right off our backs if we come near the Department of Agriculture building. Richard, can you help us? ey told us our loan payments to the government were more than our income on the farm. ey are taking all our money. 100% of our money. We have no food, no heat, no electricity, no medicine, no nothing. ey take all our income from the farm. Our mother died because we couldn’t buy her insulin.”

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

55+ active living

DID YOU KNOW?

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

CHARRED GREEN BEANS WITH LEMON VERBENA PESTO

Serves 2 to 4

Green Beans

11/2 pounds slender green beans

2 teaspoons olive oil

Lemon Verbena Pesto

1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves)

2 garlic cloves

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts

1/2 cup olive oil

Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Prepare a hot fire in your grill.

Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.

For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.

Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

SENIOR NEWS LINE

The list of food recalls is growing

It seems that there’s one recall after the other lately, mostly for our foods. To stay safe with what we eat, we need to keep an eye on those recalls. Some of them have been scarily bizarre. The latest ones include pieces of plastic in sausages, wood in frozen meals, stones in chocolate bars, botulism in juice and tree nuts in cheesecake.

Then there are the undeclared allergens, like the milk that was in tortilla chips and chicken salad, which can affect people who have a dairy allergy.

And we have the hot sauce with undeclared sulfites, which can seriously affect people who have an allergy to sulfites.

Then,in a potentially very dangerous mistake for those with heart and blood pressure problems, ground coffee was labeled as decaffeinated when it actually had caffeine.

And when you thought you’d recover from an illness with some over-thecounter help, we had a cough and cold medication recalled for being contaminated.

Humans aren’t the only ones to be affected by the wrong ingredients in our foods. A recent recall was for a dog snack that was contaminated with salmonella.

Nobody likes extra email to wade through, but in the case of recalls, we really do need to pay attention.

Signing up for email notifications is the best thing we can do right now, especially with the increase in the number of recalls. Go to www.recalls.gov/ food.html,www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls and www.foodsafety.gov to sign up for email alerts. Or if you really don’t want extra emails in your inbox, make a point of going to those sites once a week and scrolling through the list of new recalls.

Even if you think you probably don’t have a recalled item, if you’ve ever bought it in the past, check your freezer and cabinets. That item might still be there.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.
