LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS

Bag it, don’t wrap it. Shoppers who wait until the very last minute likely won’t have time to wrap all the gifts they pick up for loved ones. Gift bags conceal gifts just as well as wrapping paper, but it takes a fraction of the time to place a gift in a bag as it does to wrap it in paper. Quality gifts bags also are reusable, which can appeal to anyone looking to create less waste this holiday season.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?

Althoughthecauseofdepressionremainsamystery, certaindistinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.

In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

DEAR DR. ROACH: DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you wrote about reducing cholesterol levels with the help of statins along with a PCSK9i, such as Repatha or Praluent. My question is: Are these PCSK9is at all beneficial if one cannot take statins? -- D.C.S.

ANSWER: Yes, PCSK9 inhibitors are very effective at lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart attacks in high-risk people. Because these drugs are given by injection and are quite expensive, they are not usually the firstline treatments. We have decades of experience using statins, so they remain the first choice for most.

However, if a person cannot take a statin, or one of the alternatives such as bempedoic acid, then PCSK9i drugs are a very reasonable choice. In people with familial high cholesterol and extraordinarily high levels of cholesterol, combination therapy with two or three drugs (a statin, a PCSK9i and sometimes ezetimibe) is frequently used.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife had COVID and has lost most of her smell and taste. This has lasted for two years. She is in her late 70s. Strong flavors like barbecue sauce and onions can be detected. Is there any hope that her condition will improve? -- P.M.

Q. A.

ANSWER: Most people recover their loss of smell after COVID. Having had this for two years is a bad sign; however, the fact that she does have some sense of smell is a good sign.

The most effective treatment for the loss of smell after a viral infection is olfactory training. The same scents that were used in clinical trials can be purchased online. Recent evidence has shown that a supplement combination, ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide and luteolin, along with olfactory training, led to greater improvement. The dose used in studies was 770 mg.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter (62) was diagnosed about three years ago with a skin disorder called prurigo nodularis. Her dermatologist has tried three different injections, but they’re not working. She still gets very itchy breakouts. Please give me your thoughts and more information about this. -- K.M.A.

ANSWER: Prurigo nodularis is an uncommon disease that affects about one person per 1,000. I have seen a handful of cases, and fortunately the cases I’ve seen have responded well to potent steroid creams.

Regular use of skin lotions, avoiding scratching especially at night (I recommend cotton gloves), and sometimes antihistamines like Benadryl are also the first-line therapies.

If a patient needs more effective treatment and only has a limited area of itching, then a dermatologist will often inject the area with a high-potency steroid. Since it sounds like this hasn’t been successful for your daughter, there are other options. One is a topical cream called ruxolitinib. About 45% of people responded to this treatment, compared to 20% who responded to a cream without an active drug. Ultraviolet light (narrowband ultraviolet B) showed about 80% effectiveness. For people in whom none of these therapies work, a very expensive injection treatment, dupilumab (Dupixent) or a similar drug called nemolizumab (Nemluvio), can be used, although the response rate is not as good as desired (roughly 40%).

Since many people with prurigo nodularis have other skin diseases, and some may have (or develop) depression or obsessive skin-picking, these conditions may also need to be treated to successfully improve symptoms

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

ANSWERS TO COMMON PET FOSTERING QUESTIONS

What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires.

Is my cat going blind?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 12-year-old cat, “Gaston,” may be losing his vision. He used to jump on high objects easily; now he avoids jumping up or down. He loved chasing his laser light; now he just huddles down and seems to ignore it. At night, he meows loudly until I let him into my bedroom, where he insists on curling up with me. I have an appointment with the veterinarian for next week, but can his vision loss be reversed? -- Jeanne in Evanston, Illinois

DEAR JEANNE: I’m very glad that you’re taking Gaston to see the vet. With suspected vision loss, it’s very important to get your cat tested to determine how severe it is and the underlying cause.

Blindness in cats can be gradual or sudden, and there are many conditions that can cause it. Age, infection and common eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts or retinal detachment are all in play here.

Can Gaston’s vision loss be reversed? That really depends on what the vet finds. I can say that the sooner a problem is diagnosed, the better the chances of treatment to reverse or at least halt vision loss.

Cats whose blindness is progressive or irreversible can adapt. Those who develop it gradually tend to adapt better, while those whose vision loss is sudden may experience more anxiety and be less prone to adapt.

You can support your vision-impaired cat by keeping them indoors (if they must go out, create a fenced-in area of your yard for them). Avoid moving furniture too often. And don’t coddle your cat by carrying them around. Let them explore and adapt -- their resilience will surprise you.

King CROSSWORD

MOMENTS IN TIME

The History Channel

* On Nov. 19, 1915, British airman Richard Bell Davies performs a daring rescue, swooping down in his plane to whisk a downed fellow pilot from behind the Turkish lines. The British government awarded him the Victoria Cross.

* On Nov. 21, 1934, teenager Ella Fitzgerald wins Amateur Night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Putting her name in the hat on a bet, she’d originally planned a dance number. History was made when she changed her mind and sang “The Object of My Affection.”

* On Nov. 22, 1988, the Northrop B-2 “stealth” bomber is shown publicly for the first time at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. Although the aircraft had a wingspan of nearly half a football field, its radar signal was as negligible as that of a bird. The B-2 also successfully evaded infrared, sound detectors and the visible eye.

November’s Child

By W. Jeff omas

Sky’s darken and hasten Winds blow strong and brave Everywhere nature rallies So few le summer like days.

Nests empty, fields bare Is there a sign to tell us at there was summer, and where?

e year has le an impression Goods are stored - feeling mild What more could God send us…

SENIOR NEWS LINE

Social Security Increase for 2026

The news is in,a week late this year due to the current government shutdown: The expected increase in Social Security benefits will be 2.8% for 2026.

For the average monthly benefit of $2,015, that equates to an increase of $56, up to $2,071 for 2026 for a single person. For a couple, the $88 increase will net a $3,028 monthly benefit for 2026.

The actual Social Security increase will be less, however, because, as is typical, the Part B cost has gone up. A $21.50 increase will bring the monthly cost up to $206.50, and that comes out of the Social Security benefit.

The COLA (cost of living adjustment) is calculated every year by the price index from third quarter 2024 to third quarter 2025. Once again they’ve used the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which many think is the wrong index. (How many of us are clerical workers?) To be more accurate, the Social Security increase should be calculated by the Consumer Price Index for Elderly People (CPI-E), as that has the costs and expenses more in line with where seniors spend money.

Meanwhile, Medicare open enrollment will be in effect until Dec. 7.You still have time to look over your options and see if you need to make some changes. For example, are you taking different drugs? Visiting your doctor more now? Then there is your current plan -- has the cost changed or any of the benefits you get?

You can review plans in your area at Medicare.gov/plan-compare. Remember, scammers are everywhere and would love to have your Social Security information. They’ll approach in person, via mail, on the internet or over the phone. Don’t give out your personal information!

If you suspect fraud, you can make a report at oig.ssa.gov/report or call the Inspector General’s Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo.

~Elizabeth J. Eames, “An Autumn Reverie,” October 1840

November is Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Hospice is care providing support to patients facing terminal illness while palliative care focuses on relieving symptoms of serious illness, whether curable or not. Comfort care homes are two-bed, independently-operated hospice homes, and Rochester is credited as having the first such homes in the US. What experience have you had with comfort care homes?

- I’ve volunteered at a comfort care home

- A family member or friend received care at one

- I’ve donated to or participated in a fundraiser for a comfort care home

- I’ve visited a comfort care home, but haven’t been directly involved

- I’ve heard of comfort care homes, but don’t know much about them

FALL HIKING: WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO KNOW

Western New York offers some stunning fall hiking opportunities, with trails that come alive in shades of red, orange, and gold. Local favorites like Letchworth State Park, Mendon Ponds Park, and the trails at Genesee County Park & Forest provide beautiful backdrops for fall foliage hikes.

To enjoy the season safely, be sure to layer your clothing. Cool mornings can turn into warm afternoons, so start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or insulating layer, and top it off with a waterproof shell. Also, don’t forget daylight fades quickly this time of year—start your hike early and pack a headlamp just in case.

Whether you’re heading into a deep gorge or strolling along a wooded path, fall is one of the best times to explore the trails of WNY.

Take a moment to let a business owner know you saw their ad in the Penny Saver, tell a friend about an upcoming event or like any of our posts on social media. These small gestures make all the difference to us.

It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet.... As Ichabod jogged slowly on his way, his eye... ranged with delight over the treasures of jolly autumn.

Bergen Fire Department

Shout out to the Bergen Fire Department for their nice Halloween setup! A truly great stop on a pretty windy, cold night. Complete with cider, mini donuts, candy to FILL my son’s basket, and we could even check out the fire trucks! Bonus of the free smoke detector for residents; never have too many. We appreciated it all, thank you!

Veteran appreciates generosity

I was wearing a ball cap which identified me as a veteran, and dining with my wife on 10/29 at Applebee’s in Geneseo. You can imagine my surprise when our waitress said, to thank you for your service, your dinner has been paid for by an anonymous person. This kind gesture meant so much to me. Wow, I hope that person knows how much I appreciated this thoughtfulness and generosity. It was a moment I will not soon forget. I am so thankful for this reminder that goodness in the world still exists and will find ways to spread my thanks as I pass it on.

You

I’m so grateful to the man with the braids and car full of grandsons. Thank you for making my day!

Keep Pets Safe

What is going on lately with so very many lost cats and dogs? It seems like every day there are notices of lost or missing cats and dogs. I’m sad for the animals and owners who are heartbroken. The other side of that is the sad amount of cats found wandering in back yards, mewing at people’s door steps, and lost dogs wandering on roads at all hours. There is info online to help pet owners understand about securing their homes, windows, and yards and providing an excellent safe pet home. Learning about a cat, dog, or any pet, is essential and understanding that by saying ‘Don’t go out’ or ‘No’ doesn’t do it. Sometimes loud noises, strangers, poorly socialized pets, getting ‘stuck’ someplace, or being just plain fearful can make an animal look for safety and escape, not knowing of course what the ‘big world’ out there is. While humane societies offer so many enticing adoptions, people should not get a pet ‘on a whim’ but rather study pet care. Let’s all keep our pets safe and happy at home.

Dangerous Roadways

Stop signs are not optional. The lines on the road are not there to just look pretty. After stopping at a stop sign when turning left, if you find yourself in the oncoming lane of traffic, you’re doing it wrong. Speed limits. If you can’t at least do the posted speed limit, please pull over and let the forever growing line of traffic go by you. We all make mistakes. If you pull out in front of someone, get going or pull over. Common courtesy needs to make a comeback!

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
