DID YOU KNOW? New Year’s resolutions are made every January, and many people use this tradition as a chance to declare their intention to change jobs in the year ahead. The reasons why people change jobs vary, but the most popular reason to do so might surprise you. According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. While that may encourage employers to find ways other than pay increases to keep their employees happy, it’s also important to note that the LinkedIn survey found that money was the second most popular reason job switchers, 74 percent of whom received higher salaries at their new jobs, chose their new positions.

Local Sodus family needs a Christmas miracle On November 20th Michael Laird was rear ended in a horrible auto accident on Rt. 104 in the town of Williamson. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination.

Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight.

I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars. ***

The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery.

It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions.

However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare.

What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

Many people consider the Times Square section of midtown Manhattan the epicenter of North American New Year’s Eve celebrations. While there are plenty of places throughout North America to ring in the new year, few, if any, can compare to Times Square, where revelers have been celebrating the dawn of a new year for well over a century. According to the Times Square Alliance, New Year’s Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904. But the New Year’s Eve ball, an iconic symbol of the holiday across the globe, did not make an appearance until 1907, when it descended from a flagpole atop One Times Square.

Made of iron and wood, that first ball weighed 700 pounds and was outfitted with 100 25-watt light bulbs. One hundred light bulbs might have seemed like a lot back in 1907, but a century later the special ball made to mark the centennial celebration was illuminated with more than 32,000 Philips Luxeon LED bulbs, which organizers felt greatly increased the brightness and color capabilities of the ball.

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun.

Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

Gym Etiquette Guide for the New Year

, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year! The holidays are behind us, and 2020 is here. We hope many wonderful memories were made during the “most wonderful time of the year,” but, as we enter the New Year, some new pounds many have snuck up on some of us. We may be looking a bit more jolly than healthy. So once again, some of us determine to get healthy by joining a gym or fitness center. There is a lot of advice on how to stick to your resolutions, and we will leave that to the fitness experts. One thing we know: information and etiquette are power. Here are some gym etiquette tips that will empower you and springboard you toward success!

Get to know the gym and rules: Schedule a tour of the facility during non-peak hours. Also, schedule an appointment(s) with a staff member to walk you through the equipment usage, as well as learn the rules and guidelines of the facility. Get class and fitness schedules, as well. Knowing what to expect helps add that comfort level, and that confidence that will help you achieve your goals.

you have to wait for the equipment, showers, swimming lanes and more. Patiently do so. Also, give those working out space; no one wants to feel crowded. With that said, do not monopolize certain pieces of equipment while others are waiting. Tis’ the Season... there are going to be masses of people in the facility and parking lot, too. Take a deep breath and do not let that rob your goals or joy.

Cell phones: Unless you are using your phone for a music or fitness app, timing yourself, or are truly “on-call,” put your phone away. Your phone will cause unnecessary distractions for you and others around you. “Techiquette” applies to the gym for certain. Refrain from loud talking, talking too much and sharing personal details. No one wants to hear about that medical procedure your aunt had! As always, no cell phone use in the locker rooms. That is a huge “no-no” and a safety issue.

Remember, you are there to get fit and healthy, not to be distracted by those dings and rings.

Celebrate! If you achieved a month of consistent workouts, then reward yourself with a healthy lunch out or movies with a friend where you can practice either mealtime etiquette or movie etiquette. Be sanitary and tidy: Be certain to wipe down and sanitize your equipment after use. This is not a scene from Rocky where the grimier, the better. Remember to throw away paper towels and other paper waste. Recycle your water bottle and remember to take yours home if it is the refillable type. If towels are provided, place them in appropriate laundering bins. Also, put equipment away during and after your workout.

Practice good manners by being kind to yourself: Give yourself time to adjust to your new goals and new schedule. If you miss a day or two, (or week or so) do not let that discourage you. Get right back at it and realize that each workout is progress.

Remember the quote: “Work Out. Eat Well. Be Patient. Repeat.”

Remember to mind your manners: Treat the front desk staff and all staff politely and greet them with a “Good morning” or “How are you?” Remember the four foundational words and phrases of etiquette – Please, Thank You, Excuse Me and I’m Sorry – all apply to the gym when appropriate, which, in our book, is often. Be kind and remember that there may be times

Baxter is a rescue from Lake Erie, where he wandered the docks until he was discovered by a passerby. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. The only trick Baxter knows now-a-days is how to get treats. He knows where the treats are (in my right pocket), so he will routinely sit, like a good boy, on my right side, look up and stare until I cave in to grant him his wish.

Nancy L. Bryant December 18, 2019 Canadice: At age 81, Nancy passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was born in Sodus, NY to the late John and Anna Ekkebus. Nancy was predeceased by her son, Ronald Bryant. Survived by her beloved husband, Charlie Bryant of Canadice; her children, Raymond (Sheila) Bryant of Bloomfield, NY; Linda (Daniel) Fox of Conesus, NY; Susan ( Jack) Holmes of Canadice, NY; Nancy (Darin) Thomas of Allentown, PA; her daughter-in-law, Jeanette Bryant; her grandchildren, Timothy Bryant, Missy Bryant, Erica (Tom) Case, Ann (Chris) McDuffie, Marie Bryant, Lacey (Zack) Fox-Smith, Jacob (Shawnee) Fox, Allison Holmes, Mac Thomas, Ben Thomas, Abbey Thomas, and her great-grandchildren, Elise, Morgan, Ella, CJ, Brianna, Norah, Derek, Maeve, along with her dog Zinnia.

Nancy was very proud of her Dutch heritage. She loved knitting, her plants, playing rummy with her kids, baking, her smart phone and playing Words with Friends. Loved her wonderful husband of 62 years who cared for her ever so dearly.

Joseph C. Bader December 19, 2019 HONEOYE: Joseph C. Bader, 102, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2019, in Canandaigua, NY. Joe was born on October 13, 1917 in Rochester, New York, the son of the late Charles and Anna Bader. He was the youngest of 5 children. He went to school in Rochester and to Monroe High School. He was on the baseball team at Monroe. Baseball was a real love of Joe’s. Following school, Joe worked at Eastman Kodak Company in the Roll Coating Department, eventually becoming foreman, and staying at Kodak for 35 years. Joe fought in WWII, serving in Okinawa and Alaska for the United States Army. He played 3rd base on the US Army team during his service.

On August 19, 1944, Joe married the love of his life, Estelle Doyle Bader. They had 62 wonderful years together. Both Joe and Estelle were very active in their church, St. Ann’s of Rochester until 1977, and then St. Mary’s in Honeoye. Joe loved to hunt and fish with his family and play “Love Thy Neighbor” card games with his family anytime. He spent the last 2 years living at Quail Summit in Canandaigua, NY. He made friends wherever he went, and Quail was no exception. A hobby of his was macrameing beautiful folding outdoor chairs for all his family and friends. In the summer of 2019, Joe was granted a wish to hit a baseball again, and thus, at the Rochester Red Wings game, on July 13th, he was pitched 25 balls and hit many, one to third base. He was given a Veteran’s standing ovation for his military service at the game. Most of his family came as well as residents of Quail Summit to cheer him on. In recent years, Joe was a big part of his great-grandchildren’s lives, all 19, as well being known as “Papa Joe.” Joe is preceded in death by his wife Estelle, his parents, his sister, Dorothy, and brothers, Raymond, Carl and Leonard and many family and friends. Joe is survived by his 6 children, Tom ( Janice) Bader, Patricia (Tom) Seeley, Bill (Michelle) Bader, Peggy (Dave) Brady, Michael (Connie) Bader, John (Karen) Bader, 14 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Joe will be greatly missed.

Family and friends called on Sunday, December 22nd, from 2-4pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street, Rte. 20A, Honeoye, NY. Joe’s Funeral Mass was held at 10:30am on Monday, December 23rd, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8961 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye. Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of advanced education/ training/and with several years’ proven related experience in the operation of similar regulated housing. Experience in developing highly accurate documents, reports, and other financial or numerical materials related to the position.
