Bristol’s Burning Springs B Y K AT R I N A M . R A N D A L L

The saying goes that opposites attract. Of course, that’s not usually the case when it comes to fire and water. But in a running creek in Bristol, igniting the water may spark a flame.

Aptly called Burning Springs, the creek is thought to predate the Iroquois and was considered a sacred place to the Seneca. The theory is that the tribes found it either after the water had been ignited by lightning or they saw the bubble of the stream and lit it with torches.

Records report that French explorer Robert La Salle and missionary René Bréhant de Galinée traveled to Bristol on their way to Ohio when they were shown the springs. According to Bristol Hills Historical Society director Tracey Howe, Galinée wrote: “I applied a torch, and the water immediately took fire and burned like brandy and was not extinguished until it rained.”

Of course, while it may seem like Burning Springs harnesses magical properties, the phenomenon can be explained. If you watch for the bubbles, you’ll see the spots where natural gas bubbles up beneath the water.

Natural gas in shale creeks isn’t isolated to this one spot. According to Beth Thomas, Bristol Town Historian, her husband and friends used to play in the creek’s gulleys around his house and light fires in the water to cook hot dogs when they were kids. “That’s how the kids grew up in Bristol, tromping around in the creek,” she says.

Burning Springs got its claim to fame because of its historical significance. “That one is consistent, perpetual, you’re always going to find it there,” Thomas says.

Once a year, property owner Alan Jones opens his land to the public for all to view the Burning Springs and the beautiful, sprawling gardens that decorate the idyllic property. According to Howe, this event is the historical society’s biggest fundraising event.

When the water isn’t quite so high, visitors can also travel up the stream to see a horseshoe-shaped rock waterfall that pours over slate layers. About halfway down the rock face is a niche about three feet wide where you can smell the gas coming out of there, and if it’s lit, it looks like a little oven, Thomas says.

But visitors don’t just come to see the burning water, they also come for the sprawling gardens, particularly the tree peonies, which Jones and his wife brought back from China. Lisa Moore, Bristol Library board of trustees president, was enchanted with the gardens, saying “The gardens are so amazing, it’s like walking around England.”

Jones’ family bought the property in 1946, but it was designated a historical place in 1937, Howe says. The original house on the property burned down in the early 1900s, and a new one was built before 1910. Today, that house still stands. According to Thomas, Jones and his family are turning it into a foundation, adding, “They’re trying to keep it pristine forever and carry on the stories of all this history.”

On a rainy spring weekend this year, people gathered to hear about the history of the land and creek and to view the burning water. Some years, the flame is high, and some years it’s low. For the Senecas, a high flame was an indicator that the crop season would be good.

If the flame was low, it indicated they’d have a poor season. Logically, it makes sense, both Thomas and Howe explain. When the flame is high, the water is high, meaning there’s been rain. When it’s dry, there’s been less rain, and the flame is lower. When there’s more water, it also forces more of the natural gas up, hence the bubbles.

Considered the oldest tourist attraction in the region, Burning Springs is also the earliest place to be put on Western New York maps, explains Thomas, who has been attending the event for the past 10 years and brought her grandchildren there for the first time this year. She says, “They were so blown away by the lighting of the water on fire. Not to mention their absolutely incredible gardens. When you walk into the woods and those gardens, it’s almost like walking into a portal. You can feel it, it’s palpable.”

To concentrate the flame for visitors, a can with a hole is placed over the bubbles and then lit like a candle.

This year, the stream ran strong—and so was the flame, allowing visitors to see the fire across the water surface even without a can.

Exercise videos on AARP Here’s one more reason to keep checking back on the AARP website: the big selection of fitness offerings in the healthy living section.

There are the articles, of course: complete guide to pickleball, link between sugar and cancer, ways to get an energy boost and others.

But it’s the workout videos that have caught my eye.

New York Steam Engine Association 65th Annual Pageant of Steam

The site (aarp.org) has videos on cardio, walking, balance, stretching, core exercises and more. The knees get a lot of much-needed attention with videos on improving knee mobility and building stronger knees. Strength training has videos on building both the upper and lower body muscles.

What I appreciated in these videos is that many of them can be done while seated or holding a chair for balance, if necessary, and none require expensive equipment. A couple of light hand weights (or even soup cans), maybe a mat for the floor, and that’s all you need.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has recently set new requirements on who can get the vaccine, and they have done so without the input of experts -- the basic scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists who should all be giving input on vaccine policies. In short, administrators have removed your doctor’s ability to decide whether you are appropriate for the vaccine.

Since you are over 65, you and your husband should still be able to get the vaccine unless the FDA further restricts the ability to get vaccines. For others in similar situations, I recommend getting the vaccine while you still have this choice.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Quite a few readers asked me about a recent high-profile case of advanced prostate cancer -- President Joe Biden -- and how this could have happened.

I first answer with humility. I don’t know what the screening was like for President Biden. Although I have read reports that he was not being screened, I am not confident that I know enough to have an opinion on the appropriateness of the screening strategy used in his case.

Second, I answer from my knowledge on the biology of prostate cancer, which is that not all prostate cancers can be caught through screening. A PSA level can be low even with advanced cancer. Also, some prostate cancers can grow very quickly in between screenings. Both of these would be uncommon, however.

Screening does reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer but does not eliminate it. Prostate cancer death rates have decreased by about half in the U.S., partly from screening and partly due to improvements in medical, radiological and surgical treatment.

Third and most importantly, I answer with compassion. Looking backward is not helpful to the person who is facing a difficult diagnosis. David A. Lockwood July 18, 2025 Honeoye: At age 78, David passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by his family at his home in Honeoye, NY. He was born on November 30, 1946, to the late Donald G. Lockwood Sr. and Florence VanName. Survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl L. (Laman) Lockwood; his daughters, Jill M. (James) Gerringer and Karen R. Lockwood (Lenny Hayes); his grandchildren, Kailyn Lockwood, Amber Gerringer, Cory Lockwood; and his siblings, Gloria Dibble, Carol Gormley, Donald Lockwood Jr., Toni Gardner, Tammie Lowe, Donna Mallette, and Dawn Christiansen, along with several, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

David was a proud native of Afton, New York, where his strong work ethic and spirited nature first took root. He began working at just 12 years old, emptying coal and wood stove ashes for neighbors and taking on various odd jobs throughout the town. A natural athlete, David played all sports in high school and carried that same drive and dedication into every chapter of his life.

While still in high school, David began working with Agway Petroleum.

After graduation, he relocated to Honeoye to help launch Agway’s propane service in the area. When Agway later closed its Hemlock location, David went on to work with Wendal Coye constructing steel buildings and later at Alger’s Hardware in Honeoye. He eventually joined Suburban Propane, where he began as a repair technician and later transitioned into sales. Even while working full-time, David ran his own small engine repair business, a testament to his industrious spirit. After retiring, he continued to expand his knowledge, earning his EPA certification in lead testing from the University of Buffalo.

He took great pride in completely remodeling his historic 1863 home and found joy traveling and camping in his motorhome. A lifelong dream came true just three years ago when he acquired his beloved 1956 Ford Victoria.

Whether sharing a story, a joke, or simply his presence, David had a way of lighting up any room he entered. He was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and joyful laugh—traits that drew others to him and made lasting impressions. Above all, David was a devoted husband, father, and provider. He shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Cheryl, whom he met during their time at Afton Central School. They were married on March 11, 1967, and together built a life grounded in love, laughter, and enduring partnership. David was the proud father of two daughters, Jill and Karen, and a beloved Papa to Kailyn, Amber, and Cory. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication. He will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life service will take place at 2 PM on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the Honeoye United Church of Christ, 8758 Main Street in Honeoye.

Although David was not a veteran himself, he held great respect and admiration for those who have served our country. In his memory, contributions may be made to support veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8516.

FATHER Lemon Drizzle Cupcakes Makes 12 Cupcakes: 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 cup self-raising flour Zest of 1 lemon Drizzle: Juice of 2 lemons 5 1/2 tablespoons sugar Lemon Buttercream: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 1/4 cups powdered sugar Juice of 1/2 lemon Sprinkles Lemon Zest

Preheat the oven to 350° F and get 12 cupcake liners ready. Beat the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, self-raising flour and lemon zest and mix until combined. Spoon the mix evenly into the cupcake liners and bake for 18-22 minutes until they are baked through and springy to the touch.

Mix together the lemon juice and sugar for the drizzle in a bowl. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, carefully spoon the drizzle over the cupcakes, then leave them to cool fully on a wire rack while you make the buttercream.

Beat the butter until smooth; this can take a couple of minutes. Add the powdered sugar in two batches, beating well after each addition, then add the lemon juice and beat again.

Pipe or spread the buttercream onto your cupcakes, then sprinkle each one with some sprinkles and lemon zest.

A rave to praise Hidden treasures that lie within, long forgotten, buried deep inside behind a wall where no one has ever been. We take for granted things in this life. We put nothing in perspective, just leave it to strife! I write this rave for Hocus-Focus’ artist, Henry Boltinoff, for waking a talent that was long ago lost... drawing! Mr. Boltinoff is very talented in bringing to life his art and others’ “hidden inspiration” and love of drawing. HocusFocus has saved my life in so many ways; words cannot express my gratitude and attitude for his art. The Penny Saver is very blessed to have him as an artist and contributor to the many lives he has touched... especially mine. Telephone Crimes The disgusting behavior of phone users has really gotten out of hand. I attended an outdoor concert, and people could not just sit and listen. They had to hold their phones up to record portions of it, blocking the line of sight for everyone behind them. Some in the front row even stood up to get a wide sweeping view, and then they had to share it with their partner while still standing. I finally had to move to the open area in the rear where no one was around me so I could get an uninterrupted view.

Quiet Hours mean ‘Be Quiet! ’ As much as we know that everyone loves to blare their music while driving on these lovely summer days (keyword: DAYS), we do not need to hear ‘your’ loud car stereo system past 10pm. Some of us prefer to not be woken up to our homes shaking or being shaken out of bed because you decide that the entire neighborhood needs to hear your music.

Leash training 101 DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a rambunctious dog who is really difficult to take for walks. “Sharpe” is just over a year old and is friendly, but big -- about 70 pounds already!

How can I keep this big guy calm on the leash? -- Vance K. in Minneapolis

They are sister and brother from the same litter and recently celebrated their 3rd birthday.

DEAR VANCE: Congratulations on your new dog! And kudos for prioritizing his behavior training.

The most important factor in your dog calming down on the leash is consistency, consistency, consistency. You need to work with him first thing in the morning -- during and after his morning walk -- and in the evening. Sessions can be just five minutes long.

Positive reinforcement is another factor. When Sharpe starts to associate good behavior with a positive stimulus -- a treat or extra affection -- he’ll repeat that behavior more often, and willingly.

WARM WEATHER = WATCH FOR WILDLIFE As spring and summer settle in, animals across our area get more active, and that includes the ones your pets might meet. Keep an eye out for turtles crossing trails, groundhogs darting across yards, and even the occasional deer wandering too close for comfort. Dogs may see these animals as playmates or threats, so it’s best to keep them on leash during hikes or visits to town parks. It’s their home too, and most would prefer to be left alone!

Start in an area free of exciting distractions (a dog park full of other dogs, for example, will pull Sharpe’s attention away from you). Carry a pocket full of treats (chopped into tiny pieces so he never gets too much). Hold the leash correctly with Sharpe on your left side. If he’s standing calmly, give him a single treat.

If he’s tugging and pulling away, stand still until he becomes calm -- and reward that with a treat.

Next, say “heel” calmly and step forward. The aim is to have Sharpe start walking beside you, at your pace -- not pulling ahead or diverting to sniff something. If Sharpe starts with you, treat. Then two steps forward, and if he starts with you, treat. Progress from here; most dogs start to get it after a few sessions, and you’ll eventually walk around the area multiple times with Sharpe at your side.

You will need to reinforce Sharpe’s training throughout his life, and you won’t ever regret the time you spend with him.
