AHEAD WITHAAA TIMBERLINE’SSEASONAL TIPS!

FALL

Before cool evenings inspire you to start your first fire of the season, have AAA Timberline inspect your chimney and fireplace inside and out. Our 360-degree camera will aid us in preforming a detailed inspection running the entire length of your chimney. If you’re not especially comfortable with your fireplace or stove, AAA Timberline can inspect it and provide instructions to help you feel a little more at ease using your fireplace, especially with memories of last year’s storms and people being without power or heat for days.

WINTER

As you more frequently use your fireplace, you may notice areas that could use refacing, refabricating, or other repairs. AAA Timberline is always available to restore your fireplace to excellent condition, and they recommend repeat chimney sweeps around every 40 extinguishes to keep your fireplace working eficiently throughout the season.

SPRING

Warmer weather means it’s once again time to inspect the condition of your chimney and external masonry, including walls, patios, steps, columns, etc. Pay particular attention to any leaks and water damage. Water that has found its way into crevices may have damaged mortar and created larger cracks.

SUMMER

Call AAA Timberline for masonry repair or installation around patios and pools, outdoor firepits and fireplaces, as well as steps, home masonry and brickwork, windowsills, and pedestals.

I’m Sir Kingston Lewis, but you can call me King. I’m a 4½-year-old French Bulldog. My human, Sam, knew I was “the one” from the moment they laid eyes on me. A Frenchie had always been Sam’s dream dog with our personalities, quirks, and cute squishy face, and I fit the bill.

Finding a reputable breeder was a top priority for Sam, given the health issues Frenchies can face. It was pure luck that the breeder had a litter available with no waitlist in years, and just like that, I became a cherished member of the family within a week.

My owner says I have a staring problem. I’ll lock eyes with you until you give me attention. It has made for some hilarious elevator rides, let me tell you. And when I want something, I make Kermit the Frog sounds. It gets the message across loud and clear.

Sam and I are inseparable. I tag along everywhere—on walks, out to eat, you name it. If the distance is too much for my little legs, Sam pops me in a backpack, stroller, or just carries me. I’m a lap dog through and through, happy to sit on Sam’s lap and people-watch wherever we go.

We’ve discovered amazing pet-friendly spots around Buffalo, like The Beer Keep, Overwinter Coffee, Ballyhoo, Remedy House, and Hydraulic Hearth, and we love visiting Letchworth State Park. Vacations are a blast with Sam by my side. We’ve taken road trips to Louisville and Toronto, and I love stroller rides. Sam regrets not bringing me to dog-friendly Asbury Park, NJ, but we’re planning to go soon.

I’ll eat just about anything, but my absolute favorite treats are the pumpkin treats from The Buffalo Barkery. As for toys, my favorites change daily. I come up with new games all the time. There’s this one go-to game I made up, in which I put a toy at each end of the hallway and do a shuttle run like human children do in gym class. Maybe I need a furry sibling to play with!

Sam says I’m the best dog ever! I’m friendly, lovable, and I let Sam dress me up for the most ridiculous photos. I’m the perfect little sidekick, and we’re lucky to have each other.

Hedgehog Adventures

Hi there! I’m Potato, but my humans call me Tater Tot or Mr. Potato Head. I’m a 3½ year old African Pygmy hedgehog living with Marisa and Sal. My journey to become part of this family was remarkably quick. Sal surprised Marisa with a stuffed hedgehog for Valentine’s Day, and when she wished for a real one, he challenged her to find one in Buffalo. Challenge accepted! The next morning, they went out, and I won their hearts as soon as they met me.

I have some pretty fun characteristics. Nocturnal, I run up to 10 miles every night on my wheel. I’m quite the swimmer too! But when it comes to food, I’m a picky eater. Despite the wide variety of foods my humans offer me, the only things I’ve ever enjoyed are sweet peppers, Thanksgiving turkey, and green beans. Oh, did I mention I’m a HUGE Buffalo Bills fan? GO BILLS!

Marisa and Sal love spending quality time with me. We go to the park, swim in the pool, and explore new restaurants and coffee shops around Buffalo. Some of my favorite spots include Niagara Falls, Delaware Park, and all the charming coffee shops in town. While I don’t get to go on every vacation, I come along when my humans drive. Unfortunately, planes don’t allow me to fly, even though I could easily fit in Marisa’s purse without anyone noticing!

My favorite treats are green beans and crickets. I enjoy spending time with Marisa and Sal, keeping them company and providing endless entertainment. Unfortunately, they had to relocate me within the house because they’re expecting their first human baby in October (they keep assuring me it’s not a demotion). Life with Marisa and Sal is always full of love, laughter, and new adventures!

Tips for Hedgehog Ownership

Hedgehogs are very solitary animals; they cannot live with other hedgehogs and are not naturally social animals. You can only get them as pets as babies or they will never adapt. When they are scared, they roll up in a ball and you cannot tell where their head/butt is. For the first 2-3 months we owned Potato, he never once came out of his ball; our vet kept telling us to be patient and to let him get to trust us. They cannot see well so they rely on their hearing and scent to navigate the world, so at first he slept with pieces of fleece in our shirts and put them in his tank, and would constantly talk and sing to him so he could learn our voices. Now, he is comfortable with us and unrolls as soon as he hears our voices; it is so special!

Care of Hedgehogs

They are warm-climate animals, meaning they need to be in an environment that is between 72-78 degrees. Potato lives in an aquarium tank in which we keep a heat lamp on to stay at temp; he cannot be outside in Buffalo’s winters. They also require wheels in their tanks as they do a lot of running at night. We have a light in his room that goes on every morning at 8am (when he goes to sleep) and off every night at 8pm (when he wakes up) to help regulate his schedule. Some hedgehogs can even be potty trained (Potato is!). He eats dry grain-free cat food, but only about 1 TBSP per day! And we clip his nails biweekly. Other than that, he is pretty low maintenance as long as his environment is stable.

@hitherepotatohere

I’m Tucker. I’m three years old and humans call me a Cockapoo. My person, Emily Polonkiewicz, calls me Tucky, Tuck, or Bubba, and we have amazing adventures! Find me and my cuteness on Instagram @lifewithtuckerthecockapoo.

Emily fell in love with me the moment she saw my adorable face. She says I’m playful, loving, energetic, and intelligent. My superpower is spreading love to everyone I meet. It’s my best trait.

Emily and I have a blast together. We love going for walks, exploring farmers markets, and getting yummy ice cream treats. We even go on exciting rides! Our favorite local spots include Lucia’s on the Lake, Mulberry Italian Ristorante, and El Canelo. Emily is a foodie who loves trying new places.

Emily takes me to amazing places like First Line Brewery, Resurgence Brewery, The Grange Community Kitchen / The Grange Outpost, New York Beer Project, and Taffy’s. Wagging tails and warm welcomes make me feel like a VIP.

While I usually stay at a boarding facility during Emily’s vacations, I love our camping trips. I’m a “go with the flow” kind of dog! If you bring your furry friend on a trip, be sure to pack toys and treats for them.

Let’s talk about my favorites! I can’t resist ice cream, bacon, cheese, and pup cups from Dunkin or Starbucks. Yummy! My go-to toys are my ring, Rosé All Day bottle, and boy do I love all of my balls; I could play with them for hours.

I’m quite the character! I know when Emily spells words, especially “Greenie.” I love chasing every leaf that blows in the wind. I try to catch them and carry successful scores around. I also LOVE daycare. Whenever Emily just asks if I want to go to daycare to play with my friends, I get so excited I’ll cry, whine, and jump until we leave!

That’s me, Tucker, the lovable Cockapoo. Follow my adventures for more wagging tails and furry fun. See you around, fur-loving friends!

We are Tulip and Teddy, inseparable bunnies who bring immense joy and fluffiness into the lives of our people, Katherine and Darren. I, Tulip, a white and grey 7-year-old Holland Lop, and my friend Teddy, a mischievous brown 3-year-old Mini Lop, make the perfect duo. Follow our adventures on Instagram at @tulipmeetsteddy.

Initially, I enjoyed a quiet life until Katherine and Darren decided I needed a companion. Bonding bunnies is quite a personality-based process and after a thorough search, my people matchmakers found Teddy, a bunny with an easygoing, fearless personality who had been abandoned in a field. The moment we met, Teddy and I became inseparable. We eat and sleep together, and we even give each other little kisses throughout the day. Teddy has helped me come out of my shell, and I follow him to places I otherwise find terrifying

We are free to roam the second floor of our people’s home, which we love. I love head pets, and if a human finds the right spot, I melt to the floor in complete bunny bliss. Teddy’s favorite activity is treat time. He sits in his ball pit and stares at the humans until they go to the treat jar. When the jar is open, Teddy hops on our bed, waiting for them to serve him the treat on his throne.

When Katherine and Darren go on vacation, we stay home, cared for by our “Bun-gram” and “Bun-gramps.” Our daily routines are maintained as closely as possible, providing us with a sense of security. Our people set up cameras and leave a piece of clothing with their scent to comfort us when they’re away.

Our humans don’t give us treats often, but when they do, we LOVE bananas. When we eat them, we do an excited butt-twitching danc We get to play with a variety of toys like a ball pit, houses, tunnels, and chew toys, which is fun, but Teddy’s favorite “toy” by far is the toilet in the people’s bathroom.

Last year, I had a flare up of E. cuniculi that sent me to Cornell for over a week, which was terrible. I suffered some permanent neurological damage and now have a slight head tilt, but at least I’m alive to share this life with Teddy and our humans. I guess my strength and courage inspire Katherine and Darren every day.

Tips for Bunny Ownership

Bunnies make wonderful pets; however they are considered exotic animals and require specialized care. We encourage others to do research on proper house rabbit care (rabbit.org) before making this 10-12 year commitment.

No-Fuss Dinners for Summer

Growing up in Texas, Megan Johnson was surrounded by incredible Tex-Mex cuisine. While she loved to eat such flavorful and authentic dishes during her childhood, her passion for cooking didn’t blossom until after she graduated from college. At that point, she decided it was time to explore new ways of putting dinner on the table, especially during a busy work week. In 2017, Megan started her blog – Megan Vs Kitchen – and began crafting new recipes and creating dishes worthy of praise in the kitchen.

As her blog title suggests, Megan started sharing her cooking journey in an attempt to “befriend” the kitchen and its many possible recipes. Starting any new hobby or developing a new skillset is tricky and requires patience. Now several years into her cooking journey, Megan has created a collection of recipes that are quick, easy, and incredibly delicious, and she wants nothing more than to share them with us!

Megan loves to create meals that are very user-friendly, only require a few ingredients, and won’t have us shouting at the stovetop in frustration. “I try to make life easier by sharing quick and easy weeknight meals that your family will love,” shares Megan.

Living in Buffalo, Megan is never short on new ideas for an incredible meal. She loves exploring the bustling food scene around the city for inspiration –her favorite spots are Deep South Taco

and The Terrace at Delaware Park! With the mix of local influences and a heavy influence on cooking from her Texan roots, anyone and everyone is guaranteed to find an easy, comforting recipe that works for them on Megan Vs Kitchen.

Prep Time

While Megan prioritizes the “quick and easy” approach to her meals, she spends hours perfecting each recipe before sharing it with her followers. To ensure all the flavors and spices are just right, she tests each recipe at least three times before sharing it. “I want the meal to be a success for people,” she says.

Pasta with Peas & Lemons

The name of the dish alone is enough to conjure up fresh tastes of summer. With the perfect amount of mint added to the dish for a bright flavor, this recipe is the definition of summer comfort food.

INGREDIENTS

3/4 lb. orecchiette pasta or any short pasta

1 cup frozen peas

1/4 cup mint leaves, chopped

3-4 tablespoons lemon juice (about 2 lemons)

3 tablespoons butter

1 cup finely grated pecorino romano

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook pasta as directed on packaging.

2. Add frozen peas to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 2-3 minutes or until they are warm.

3. Once the pasta is al dente, carefully scoop out ½ cup of pasta water. Drain the pasta and return it to the pot.

4. Add ¼ cup of pasta water, pecorino romano, butter, and pepper. Mix until a creamy sauce is formed. Then mix in the peas, mint, and lemon juice. If the pasta is dry, add more pasta water 1 tablespoon at a time.

5. Salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately.

Megan wants us to really enjoy the food we cook. Her approach to dishes is to ensure cooking doesn’t feel like a chore, but rather a way to round out our day with a little extra happiness.

Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos

Staying loyal to her Tex-Mex roots, Megan’s Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos make a perfect meal for a sunny summer’s evening. Thanks to the slow cooker, this recipe couldn’t get much easier – by the time you are home from work, dinner is ready to eat!

INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 cup salsa (I used Tenayo original salsa)

1 package taco seasoning or

1/4 cup taco seasoning

1.5 lbs chicken breast

1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped Juice from 1 lime

10 tortillas

1 1/4 cup cheese like cotija, cheddar, Mexican, or Monterey Jack

Other toppings like lettuce, guacamole, pico, pickled onions, sour cream, lime, tomato

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Mix together salsa and taco seasoning in the slow cooker. Add chicken. Cook on high for 3 hours or low for 6 hours.

Help! You were just invited last minute to a potluck and need an idea for a stellar and easy dish. Well, this recipe could be your answer. From the juiciness of the turkey meatballs to the rich mozzarella folded into each bite, this dish is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. ground turkey 94% lean

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

1/3 cup panko bread crumbs

1 egg

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

32 mozzarella ball pearls (I used BelGioioso pearl sized mozzarella balls – you will use most of the container)

2-4 tablespoon olive oil

1 24-oz jar of your favorite marinara sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF.

2. In a large bowl, mix ground turkey, parmesan, panko, egg, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper with your hands.

3. Form 16 balls, about the size of a golf ball. Make a well in the center of the meatballs, place two mozzarella balls in the middle, and reform the meatball. Make sure the mozzarella is completely covered.

4. Add enough olive oil to a large oven-safe skillet to coat the bottom. Heat the oil over mediumhigh heat. Once the oil is hot, add the meatballs. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until brown, then flip and cook another 3-4 minutes or until brown.

5. Transfer the meatballs to a plate and drain the excess oil from the skillet. Add marinara sauce to the skillet, then nestle the meatballs in the sauce.

6. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked through.

7. Serve immediately with pasta or a salad.

Notes

If you don’t have an oven-proof skillet, you can use a regular skillet to sear the meatballs and then a casserole dish to bake the meatballs in the oven.

REMEMBERING THE SWEETEST IN BUFFALO: Mary Alloy

When we think of “Sweet Buffalo,” with its positive, inspirational stories of hope, love, and kindness, we think of Mary Alloy, a devoted mother of four and the proprietor of Just Pizza & Wing Co. in Amherst, who was known not only for her successful business but, more importantly, for her boundless compassion and generosity towards animals, children, and numerous charities in the Buffalo area and beyond.

One of Mary’s remarkable contributions was the groundbreaking idea of putting shelter dogs on pizza boxes— an initiative that gained international recognition. In 2020, Mary eagerly embraced the opportunity to collaborate, defying usual constraints faced by businesses in advertising. She eagerly awaited the arrival of each batch of flyers featuring the adorable, adoptable dogs. The campaign took flight, facilitating the adoption of countless dogs and cats. The impact was so profound that even a television station from Germany traveled to Just Pizza to interview Mary, capturing her infectious joy and unwavering commitment to animal welfare.

Mary’s kindness extended far beyond her efforts for animals. She selflessly provided free pizza and food for various causes, including parties for children battling cancer, young patients at Oishei Children’s Hospital, and schoolchildren who displayed acts of kindness. Just Pizza’s countertop always hosted donation boxes overflowing with contributions for her favorite charities, a testament to the community’s appreciation for her unwavering support.

During the pandemic, when small businesses faced unprecedented hardships, Mary continued to exemplify compassion. She generously distributed $50 gift certificates to those who adopted shelter dogs, ensuring that both humans

and animals found solace and companionship during trying times.

Even in the face of her own battle with stage 4 cancer, Mary’s indomitable spirit shone bright. When her illness took a turn for the worse this spring, her family questioned the custom of waiting until someone’s passing to shower them with flowers. Thus, Rose-Mary Day was born—a day dedicated to celebrating Mary’s remarkable life and honoring her enduring legacy of kindness. On May 6-7, 200 people gathered, laden with fl owers, to pay tribute to the woman whose heart knew no bounds.

Mary’s oldest son, Charles Alloy, aptly described her as “the spice of life for everyone.” Rose-Mary Day embodied the essence of her spirit. The overwhelming turnout on RoseMary Day was a testament to the love and admiration that radiated from every corner of the community.

Mary’s children said, “All we can say is wow. With each smiling face of man, woman, and child walking up our mother’s driveway ready to honor her with a bouquet in their hands, the process of grieving became a little lighter. This overwhelming feeling of joy took over us like a sweeping whirlwind lifting our spirits. We can’t thank the community enough. We are so grateful for this one-of-a-kind event, honoring our one-of-akind mother.”

As we mourn the loss of our dear friend Mary, we know we will never forget her. Mary’s impact on our lives was immeasurable, and the spirit of kindness she embodied will continue to inspire us. Rest in peace, dear Mary Alloy, knowing that you have left an indelible mark on the world and that your memory will forever be cherished.

Nestled within the communities along the Niagara River are towns and villages filled with charm, history, culture, and an abundance of hometown pride.

The Niagara River Region is known worldwide for its beauty, majesty, and tourism. What comes to mind for most when they think of Niagara is its namesake falls. However, insiders know that Niagara Falls is only a part of what makes the Niagara River Region great. Nestled within the communities along the Niagara River are towns and villages filled with charm, history, culture, and an abundance of hometown pride.

Located approximately seven miles north of Niagara Falls, the Town and Village of Lewiston welcomes visitors year-round. Organized in 1818, the Town of Lewiston was controlled by France and Britain before becoming part of the United States. With its prime location on the Niagara River, Lewiston served an important role in our country’s expansion and development. During the mid-

1800s, it is believed Lewiston often served as the last stop on the Underground Railroad, providing refuge for escaped slaves seeking freedom across the Niagara River in Canada.

Today, Lewiston’s storied history can be viewed in monuments honoring its past, including the Freedom Crossing Monument on N. Water Street, the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Portage Road, and Lewiston Veterans Memorial Circle of Honor in Memorial Park. Frontier House holds the stories of its honored guests, which include 19th-century presidents and historical figures.

In addition to its historical significance, Lewiston is a gateway to the Niagara Wine Trail and is a vibrant social center for the Niagara River Region.

Lewiston

Lewiston is a hub for many of the Niagara River Region’s festivals. The spring and summer months hum with activity with the Smelt Festival in May and the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market opening for the season in June. In July, GardenFest draws crowds to historic Center Street, the heart of the Village of Lewiston. The fun continues in August with the Lewiston Jazz Festival and Lewiston Art Festival.

In September, the Niagara County Peach Festival sets up shop in Academy Park for three days of peach-filled desserts, fair food, entertainment, and carnival rides. The Harvest & Hops Festival is a fall favorite. In late November/early December, the Lewiston Christmas Walk welcomes families for a festive holiday celebration with old-town charm.

Lewiston resident, Lewiston Love co-owner (@LewistonLoveNY on Instagram), and Historical Association Secretary, Leandra Collesano describes holidays in Lewiston as a sight to behold. “A drive down the twinkling lights on Center Street on a December night is nothing short of magical,” Leandra says.

No matter the time of year, Lewiston is a prime shopping destination. Trendsetters head to Research and Design on Center Street for the latest women’s fashion and beauty products. Take a short walk down to Cheri Amour for jewelry and gifts. Round out your shopping spree with The Rose Hanger Shop. For spice lovers, Sgt. Pepper’s Hot Sauces, Etc. has a wide selection of sauces, spices, cheeses, snacks, pickled items, and more. Find that rare home treasure at Antique to Chic or add a

little color to your life at The Plant Shack When you’re done pounding the pavement, find more unique wares at LewistonLove. com, the online home of the former Center Street brick & mortar shop.

Restaurants to visit include The Silo on N Water Street, open May through September. An old coal silo famously featured on Travel Channel’s Man v. Food, The Silo is known for its steak sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, and more. Be sure to try The Original Haystack, a ribeye hoagie loaded with melted cheese and toasted hashbrowns, or try it as The Footlong Haystack. When you’re finished, walk over to The Silo’s Caboose for ice cream.

The Brickyard Pub & BBQ on Center Street is a favorite for its beer, bourbon, and

smoked meats. For Italian fare, Casa Antica is an excellent choice. In the mood for tacos? Hit up Taquito Lindo, a family-owned taco shop with a traditional Mexican vibe. Apple Granny whips up classic American fare and is the perfect spot to enjoy a patty melt. Griffon Brewery and Gastropub on S Water Street offers expansive views of the Niagara River, an extensive drinks menu, elevated pub fare, and live music on the patio. To indulge your sweet tooth, delight in a cupcake at The Village Bake Shoppe or pastries at Di Camillo Bakery.

Collesano’s insider take: On a Friday night, linger over mahi-mahi at The Spicey Pickle. Afterward, enjoy drinks with friends at Brewed & Bottled Craft Beer Shop or Battle Flag Tavern. On Wednesday through Saturday nights, Carmelo’s Coat of Arms is a must-visit. Try the soft-shell crab in late spring or the pan-seared filet mignon with blueberry gastrique. On a Saturday morning, listen to birds chirp as you stroll down Center Street and grab a bite for breakfast at Orange Cat Coffee Co (order the corned beef hash!)

Looking for an outdoor adventure? Artpark State Park is home to award-winning concerts overlooking the Niagara Gorge, unique festivals, and family-friendly camps and events. Take a walk at Stella Niagara Preserve. Devil’s Hole State Park provides adventure with hiking, fishing, and exploring. Kiwanis Park and Toohey Park offer fun, modern playgrounds for kids.

Before you leave, take a guided boat tour of the Niagara River with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, then make your way north to Youngstown for another day of learning and fun.

Youngstown

Located seven miles north of the Village of Lewiston, the Village of Youngstown bears an equally rich history and awe-inspiring topography. Positioned at the intersection of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, Youngstown played a prominent role in our nation’s history. Keeping that history alive, Old Fort Niagara is a historical gem that welcomes visitors year-round.

The awe-inspiring French Castle dates to the 1700s. Built by the French to guard its interests in North America, Old Fort Niagara played a prominent role during the colonial wars. Its position at the mouth of the Niagara River was crucial for access to the Great Lakes and westward expansion. Today, the Old Fort offers daily tours where visitors can stand within its great walls and feel the weight of its history.

In addition to historical significance, Youngstown serves as a hub for shopping, dining, and recreation in the Niagara River Region. The Youngstown Yacht Club holds many events throughout the summer. Every July, the Club hosts the CanAm Challenge & Great Lakes PHRF Fest, a sailing contest between American and Canadian boats. During the summer, the Youngstown docks on the Niagara River are the place to watch sailboats and sunsets. Youngstown is also home to Porter on the Lake Summerfest in July.

The riverside village has several retail shops, a small grocery store, dining options, and farmers markets. Youngstown Marketside offers fresh produce, meats, and products from farms throughout New York State. Stop at the Youngstown Village Diner for breakfast. Enjoy a slice at Grandma D’s Pizzeria or Main Street Pizzeria, or grab a late-night bite at The Ontario House aka Stone Jug, an historic inn and tavern serving the Niagara Frontier since 1942. Somewhere on Blairville Road draws in diners with comfort food and live performances. Bandana’s Bar & Grill on Lake Road is a must-try for its casual ambiance and innovative menu. Dine inside or order food to go. Try the Jamaican jerk chicken—served with sweet potato fries and banana aioli—and have a picnic lunch on the grassy knoll at Fort Niagara State Park. On a clear day, you can see the Toronto skyline, and if you listen closely, you may even hear musket fire from a demonstration.

Fort Niagara State Park boasts exquisite natural beauty along with family-friendly amenities. Take a walk along the sandy shoreline or enjoy a secluded hike on its nature trails. Kids enjoy the playground, pool, and waterslide. Nearby Joseph Davis State Park is perfect for fishing, beautiful river views, picnics, and disc golf. Surrounded by trees, a visit as fall leaves change color is unforgettable.

Take in one of our spectacular sunsets we have yearround that paint our waterfront and skies from fiery red and deep purple to soft pastels.

Finally, every fall, the streets of Lewiston and Youngstown serve as the course for the Mighty Niagara Half Marathon, which welcomes athletes from across the globe. During the event, Youngstown is also the starting place for the Hospice Dash 5K.

For those visiting the Niagara River Region, Youngstown has several drop-off and pick-up stops on the Discover Niagara Shuttle, a free shuttle service offered MayOctober, providing transportation from Youngstown and Lewiston to Niagara Falls. No matter when you go, your visit to the Niagara River Region is sure to make an impression that will last a lifetime.

Our Ice Cream Truck cruises local south town neighborh oods weekl y, serving up sweets for the streets that patrons are going nuts fo r. Based out of East Aurora, Paige Huetter and her moth er Lynn spearhead this womanowned business, with four of Huetter’s children heavily involved in promotion.

The ice cream truck hit the road last April, and this is the second business Huetter and her mother started, the first being Tap Truck Buffalo. Huetter said they bought five Mr. Cool trucks, two of which they rebranded in a pink and blue theme, designed by her children. The original plan was to convert them into more tap trucks, but Huetter explained they had different ideas in mind: “My mom and I went back and forth. My husband was in on a lot of the conversations, and we said screw it, and we just pulled the trigger and it’s been a fun adventure thus far.”

THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM 45

Our Ice Cream Truck is the hottest thing on the block. More than selling ice cream, the venture is heavily involved in the community, supporting fundraisers and school events.

Huetter says, “We mostly stick to the south towns, which is where we’re based out of. We have fun with it. We make sure we are doing our best to give back to a community that has given so much to us.”

Among their charitable endeavors, they were posted at the Classic Rink - East Aurora for East Aurora Little Loop Football & Cheerleading Flag Football to raise funds for a local mom and cancer survivor riding in the Ride for Roswell. Huetter says the ice cream business donated the proceeds from that event to the family to meet their fundraising goals.

Being a single mother for a period before marriage as

well as a coach for their children’s sports teams, Huetter says she understands the importance of being involved in schools and being an active community member. “I think it’s important to provide fun, healthy, and safe environments for our kiddos, and if we can give back to schools, we do a lot of that as well,” she says.

Our Ice Cream Truck offers a variety of flavors as well as stone-cold classics. They have dairy free, gluten free, and kosher options, so everyone can enjoy all the ice cream truck has to offer. Huetter says, “We offer a ton of characters like Batman, Ninja Turtles, Spongebob, Minions, and Spider-Man. The kids all seem to get really, really excited for [them], which is fun to see. And the adults love the classics of the ice cream sandwich and the strawberry, chocolate crunch bars, and the Nutty Buddy cones, so it’s fun to see the range of what people reminisce about.”

46 THEHOMEPUBLICATIONS.COM

Our Ice Cream Truck also offers dog-friendly ice cream with flavors such as Nutly & Cheese and Peanut Butter. Huetter says they offer dog ice cream options when they offer street vending services and at events related to dogs, such as when they served ice cream for dogs for Sadie’s Safe Harbor Canine Rescue last year. “We kind of try to check a lot of boxes to get a lot of people and animals covered,” she says.

Going forward, Huetter says they will continue to grow business by being visible in the community they serve and by booking events. As of now, she said they gain notoriety through word of mouth. “Our trucks are well-branded.

They’re familiar. We have business cards we hand out,” she says as she explains how they get creative with marketing. They also hand out ice cream tokens at events for patrons who can use them the same day or later when they come through the neighborhood.

Although the ice cream market is a rocky road, Our Ice Cream Truck manages to stay ahead through their effective model of becoming a tenet of the community. When asked why take the risk in a business landscape that’s an increasingly niche market, Huetter says, “Why not?”

“My grandfather used to say you don’t have to be crazy to do stuff, but sometimes it helps,” she says. “We just kind of take a chance and go with it.”
