“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.

The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment.

Group Supports Brockport through Community Hygiene Bank

By Amanda Dudek At noon on Saturday, January 12th, volunteers at Concordia Lutheran Church will reach out to their neighbors offering them free personal necessities. For those struggling to make ends meet, there is all too often not enough money left over for products such as toiletries and paper goods.

The cost for these items can add up and are not provided through government assistance programs. Scarlett Aeckerle LMSW, Coordinator of the Community Hygiene Bank of Concordia Lutheran Church in Brockport has made it her mission to fill this need in the local community. Ms. Aeckerle, along with many other volunteers, run Concordia Lutheran Church’s Community Hygiene Bank every other month, and the need is only growing.

With her diverse background as a social work practitioner as well as a college educator, Scarlett Aeckerle has long had a deep and abiding interest in poverty and trauma and the issues related to them. Ms. Aeckerle became the Executive Director of LINC (Lutheran Intercity Network Coalition) Rochester in 2014, one of a number of LINC branches across the country. Rochester has some of the most extreme poverty in the nation, so working with a class of Masters social work students at the GRCMSW program in 2014, they conducted and completed a community needs assessment of Rochester and discovered an urgent gap in available resources: personal hygiene products. They presented these findings to the LINC Rochester Board and began a hygiene bank program in the City. Unfortunately, there was not enough funding available from the area churches to sustain the LINC Rochester work, and the program closed formally in 2016. Aeckerle then turned her attention to Brockport, believing its community experienced the same resource gap. With no literature to review on this, she could not have known how right she was.

Working through Concordia Lutheran Church, a strong partner of the former LINC Rochester and with the active support of Pastor David Triplett and his wife, Sue, and other church members, Scarlett Aeckerle created the first community hygiene bank in the area. She says she knows this cannot be a unique idea. “You hear about this sort of thing all the time, such as teachers getting a washer and dryer at their school so that students can wash their own clothes,” says Aeckerle, and it is not just young people who are in need. “About 40% of those who come [to the Community Hygiene Bank] are seniors on a limited income,” Aeckerle continues. The elderly sometimes find themselves in need of products, including incontinence items, which can be a huge expense. Meeting these needs is clearly an enormous undertaking, and Ms. Aeckerle praises the many volunteers who help make it happen. “Along with many volunteers from our church and community, we receive student volunteers from the College at Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan College and support from local businesses. For example, the Stewart Insurance Agency and AddRed help with our printing needs, Dr. Ophardt and Dr. Clasquin regularly donate cases of hygiene items. We also belong to the BHN-Brockport Helping Network, whose members also provide support and resources to us,” says Aeckerle. “It definitely takes a community to offer this outreach program for our community.”

Just like those they serve, these volunteers span all ages, from 6 to 85 years old. These volunteers help ensure that “Personal Care Blessing Bags,” as these hygiene product bags are called, are not simply “handed out,” but rather that every guest feels welcome, comfortable and accepted. Visitors receive a ticket with a number. They are offered coffee, water, something to eat. “They chat with others who have come in,” says Aeckerle. “It has become a bit of a social event for some of them,” a

positive thing since some guests can become isolated.

The intake process for guests is confidential and helps with efforts to connect visitors with additional resources. “We also offer to take prayer requests,” says Aeckerle. “This is by no means required, but many of our visitors share their prayer requests with us. These are prayed over by our congregation.” When guests are called by number, they are greeted by a runner with a canvas bag and plastic bags. They enter an entire “shopping area,” where they then select one of each type of product they need, typically 15 items in total, including two feminine hygiene products as needed. All items, which are provided through monetary and product donations, are offered free of charge. These full-size products typically include such necessities as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, cleaning items, dish soap, laundry detergent, combs, bar soap, disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products and adult incontinence products (when available). “We also like to have a Surprise Table with unexpected extras as well any additional hygiene products we have received above and beyond our standard items,” explains Aeckerle. “We are always blessed above and beyond with items to give every time.” She explains that there is always enough for everyone who visits, and people are gracious and kind in support of this ministry which has grown from serving 11 families at its first event in March 2017 to assisting 65 families at its most recent event in November 2018.

All Brockport families and individuals in need are welcome to attend the Free Community Hygiene Bank, from young children to college students to seniors. Those who wish to participate in the program must bring a photo ID and proof of residency such as a current bill with their address or a Brockport CSD or SUNY Brockport Student ID. Distributions are on Saturdays from noon-2:00pm,and dates for 2019 Community Hygiene Bank are as Follows: January 12, March 9 , May 18, July 13, September 14 and November 9 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 6601 Fourth Section Road in Brockport. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.

Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves.

The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 47-year-old female in good overall health. About six months ago, I began to take several supplements, one of which was vitamin E (200 IU). I had no noticeable adverse reactions to any of the supplements. About 10 days ago, I started taking 400 IU of vitamin E. Right about the same time as this increase, I began having painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and tiredness. After a week of this, someone suggested that the vitamin E might be the cause. I have stopped taking it and have even avoided foods high in vitamin E. Three days later, I’m still having the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the vitamin E was the cause of the symptoms, shouldn’t they have gone away by now? -- K.B. ANSWER: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is possible for levels to build up in the body if it’s taken in high doses for long periods of time. However, toxic effects are unlikely at less than 1,500 IU daily, which is far higher than what you have been taking.

Bleeding is one risk at high doses, as is a theoretical deficiency of vitamin A and D. I think it is far more likely that you happened to get a case of gastroenteritis -- inflammation of the stomach/intestines, often caused by a virus. It’s unlikely to be due to the vitamin E. However, since vitamin E supplementation hasn’t been shown to improve any of the many conditions it has been studied for, I don’t recommend that you continue to take it.

Go easy on eating for a few days after gastroenteritis: The timetested BRAT diet (bananas, white rice, peeled apples and dry toast) is effective. You can get enough fluid through water or apple juice, along with some salt, like chicken or vegetable broth. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told that due to the way our food is processed and grown, most people lack magnesium and should take a magnesium supplement. Should I? I read that one symptom of low magnesium can be constipation or irregularity. -- C.B. ANSWER: The prevalence of low magnesium depends on the population. About 2 percent of the general population has low magnesium levels, but among people with diabetes, the rate is about 25 percent. In people who abuse alcohol, the prevalence may be as high as 30 to 80 percent. Some diuretics used for high blood pressure predispose a person to magnesium deficiency. High magnesium foods include leafy green vegetables, nuts, cereals and avocados.

The most common symptoms of severe low magnesium are loss of appetite and muscle tremors and weakness. Magnesium is necessary for potassium and calcium balance, so these can be deficient in cases of low magnesium. Since only a small amount of body magnesium is in the blood, magnesium deficiency should be considered in people with unexplained low calcium and potassium.

Low magnesium is rare in nondiabetic people who eat a good diet.

I don’t recommend magnesium supplementation for low-risk people with no symptoms. Symptoms of low magnesium should be evaluated by a physician and not self-treated. Only those with diagnosed low magnesium should take a magnesium supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
