Cu ivating Inclusion and Purpose:

THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF JENNYRAE BRONGO AND HOMESTEADS FOR HOPE O

Nestled

historic Erie Canal on Rochester’s west side, lies a 55-acre sanctuary known as Homesteads for Hope Community Farm. is unique haven, where people of all abilities can learn, work, and live together, is the brainchild of Jennyrae Brongo, a visionary entrepreneur and passionate advocate for individuals with disabilities. e farm embodies her dedication to creating an inclusive community, turning her personal challenges into a mission of hope and empowerment.

A er graduating from Spencerport High School in 2007 and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management Engineering from Alfred State College in 2011, Brongo joined her father’s construction business. Her father passed away just two months later, leaving Jennyrae to lead the family business. She transformed their 15-acre gravel pit into Brongo Supply, focusing on construction recycling and landscape supply. Despite her success, her heart was set on a different mission: creating a better life for her family and others raising children with disabilities.

e seed for Homesteads for Hope was planted during a moment of desperation and hope. Her brother, Charles “Chucky” Brongo, has autism, and Jennyrae is full-time guardian for him. Struggling to find suitable services for Chucky a er he graduated to adulthood, Jennyrae and her mother, Luann, spent countless hours seeking solutions. A visit to a nearby farm sparked an idea that would change their lives. Inspired by the therapeutic potential of nature and community, they envisioned a place where individuals with disabilities could find purpose and belonging. Jennyrae and Luann founded Homesteads for Hope in 2013 to create such an inclusive campus offering educational and vocational programs on a public farm.

Homesteads for Hope is not just a farm, though; it’s a community where people grow together. Under Jennyrae’s leadership, the farm has evolved into a vibrant hub that serves over 600 families. e farm offers a range of programs, from vocational training and social engagement to skill development, all designed to empower individuals with disabilities. e community’s support has been instrumental in this journey, transforming the farm into a beacon of inclusion and opportunity. At Homesteads for Hope, “individuals with and without disabilities thrive, finding purpose and belonging through the transformative power of agriculture.”

e farm’s impact is profound. With 17 staff members, over 30 volunteers, and 65 full-time apprentices, Homesteads for Hope provides a lifeline for families navigating the challenges of raising children with disabilities. e programs offered at the farm help individuals transition from childhood to adulthood, fostering independence and confidence through hands-on learning and community involvement.

One of Brongo’s proudest achievements is the completion of the Forever Homestead, a 6,500-square-foot community center housed in a renovated 200-year-old estate. is project, completed just before the grand opening in October 2023, provides classrooms, a teaching kitchen, offices, and residential space, serving as the heart of the community. e center’s grand opening was a testament to the power of hope and community, welcoming over 1,000 guests and marking a significant milestone in Homesteads for Hope’s journey.

Brongo’s vision for Homesteads for Hope continues to expand. Her immediate goal for 2024 is to close the gap on a $2.5 million fundraising campaign, which will secure the farm’s future and support the development of inclusive residential housing on the property. is ambitious project aims to provide a much-needed living space for individuals with disabilities, further enhancing the farm’s mission of inclusion and empowerment. She emphasizes her personal goal “to ensure my brother and our farm family have everything they need, and then maybe [she’ll] consider slowing down a bit.”

Brongo is deeply involved in every aspect of the organization, from strategic planning and community outreach to program development and hands-on farm work. She thanks everyone who works on the farm and supports its mission.

Homesteads for Hope stands as a testament to Brongo’s vision, offering a model of inclusion and empowerment that transforms lives and inspires hope. As the farm continues to grow, so does the legacy of love and community Brongo and her family have cultivated, proving that with determination and a shared vision, anything is possible.

VENT BRIGHTER

Thank You

Noise Ordinances

I’m a 94 year male who uses a cane to get around. Do a lot shopping at Caledonia Market. Just want to thank the kind lady who help me load my car in the rain. Thank you

Thank You

We were at [restaurant] in Avon this morning. When we were getting ready to leave and pay our bill, the waitress told us the young man seated at the table nearby paid our bill. We are an older couple and thought it was a wonderful gesture for this young man to do. You have no idea what that meant to us. We just came back from an appointment and we normally sit in the same spot, and it was such a nice thing for the young man to do. Thank you, and God bless!

To the person complaining about others mowing between 7am and 9pm, claiming it is unreasonable to mow during those times, most towns and cities have noise ordinances that allow those kinds of activities from those hours. When you factor in some blocks have 30+ houses that all need mowing, of course you’re going to hear mowing all of the time. It's a part of what summer is! Most towns also have a law about the height of grass, so mowing is necessary, and also helps keep the growing tick population at bay. So I'm sorry that people are following their local regulations.

Terrible Roads

Good Guy

Shout out to Ben Burgess who was nice enough to put my spare tire on when I got a flat in Shortsville, NY. I am not from the area so I did not know anyone personally I could call and although I tried calling several service stations in the area they were all busy and I was stuck. Ben was definitely a lifesaver as I had a couple of appointments in Irondequoit that afternoon that I had to keep and thanks to Ben I made them both.

They put in water lines throughout [local town]. They then "fixed" the huge crevices they made in the roads but didn't even make sure they were even with the existing road. There is one spot that is so bad that they have to keep filling it with gravel to make it easier to cross in your vehicle. Why not just fix them properly?! If you're going to mess the roads up for a project you should be held accountable to fix them properly when you're done.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

Be reasonable when pricing items. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS

Cataract diagnosis and treatment: An eye doctor will examine dilated eyes to diagnose cataracts. A slit-lamp microscope can make it easier to spot abnormalities, states the AOA.

The eye professional will consider age and the severity of cataracts to determine a treatment strategy. Early loss of vision due to cataracts may be mitigated by stronger lighting or a change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.

Johns Hopkins says cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries. It is safe and effective. An ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial, clear lens. If cataracts are present in both eyes, each surgery will be performed separately. A possible complication of cataract surgery is when a part of the natural lens that is not taken out during surgery becomes cloudy and blurs eyesight. This can be remedied with a laser treatment.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL

SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS

is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Can Sciatica Be Relieved Through Steriod Shots?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering what the best treatment is for sciatic pain. Would a steroid shot help? The pain is behind my knee, down the outside of my leg, and now on my foot. -- J.F.

ANSWER: “Sciatica” is a general term for a process that compresses the nerve roots, which causes symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and a loss of reflexes. The sciatic nerve supplies much of the innervation to the leg. The area that you describe is most likely the first sacral nerve (S1), and pain here is most frequently caused by disc herniation at the L5-S1 space. This can cause acute symptoms that are often quite severe.

Initial treatment is usually conservative, consisting of anti-inflammatories and avoiding activities that worsen pain. While bed rest was sometimes prescribed, it is seldom necessary for more than a day or two, and many people actually feel better when they are up and about. After a week, most people are able to do light activity, and I tell my patients neither to push themselves to do more than they can, nor force themselves to rest if they feel OK with light activity.

Steroids have certainly been used in this situation, and they are injected into the epidural space by an expert who uses imaging. Although there is a slight improvement in pain around three months among those who are treated with epidural steroids, there was no longer a benefit found around six months. This means that you get better only a little faster than normal at the cost of a small risk from the injection. If a person isn’t recovering well within a few weeks, I often refer them to physical therapy. If they aren’t getting benefit at all (or they are getting worse), then it is time to find out what the cause is with an MRI and a referral to an expert.

WHEN A TOOTH DIES

Underneath the layer of protective enamel, a tooth is a living organism with nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If a tooth is damaged and the blood supply is limited or cut off, it can cause the tooth to die. A dead tooth should be treated immediately because it can become infected and affect your gums, jaw, and other teeth. The term “dead tooth” is somewhat of a misnomer because, when treated in time, the tooth’s pulp is still alive, and it can be saved with a root canal and a filling or crown. When a dead tooth has significant damage, it may need to be extracted and can then be replaced with a bridge, denture, or implant.

Losing a tooth, especially to poor oral hygiene, is an eye-opening

experience, one that often leads to a vow to be better at home care.

To help maintain a healthy oral profile for a lifetime, keep in mind that annual checkups keep teeth happy and healthy. For quality, compassionate care from a team of highly trained, professional individuals, we welcome your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances.

P.S. A painful or discolored tooth may be the sign of a dying tooth. Tooth decay, oral injuries, and using your teeth to open things can all cause a dead or dying tooth.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadiantravelersabouttodepart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percentisconsideredacceptable.

Here’s A Tip

• To clean out your coffee grinder in order to use it for spices, add about a half-cup of white rice, then pulverize it. Repeat until scent is gone and rice powder comes out clean.

• It’s food-smart to separate utensils and cutting boards used for veggies, meats, poultry, etc. Here’s a handy chef’s trick: Color code. Paint a different color stripe down the edge of cutting boards and around the handle of utensils for each variety: green for veggies, yellow for poultry and red for beef.

PAW’S CORNER

Senior cat’s arthritis is impacting his quality of life.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sticky” is 14 years old and still in great shape. He loves chasing a er a laser beam and rolling around with his toys. However, I’ve noticed that when he comes over to leap up on my lap, he hesitates and just puts his paws on my leg and meows. I have to encourage him to leap, and he doesn’t seem happy about it. Could something be wrong with him? -- Janine in Gulfport, Mississippi

DEAR JANINE: At age 14, Sticky is definitely a senior cat, and it sounds like he’s beginning to develop a common senior cat problem: arthritis. Just like us, cats can suffer from stiff, achy joints as they get older. You’re doing a great job of observing his behavior and spotting changes in the way he interacts. Arthritis (typically osteoarthritis, sometimes abbreviated as OA) is progressive, and sometimes not noticeable right away. ere are four key things to watch for:

Running -- Does your cat run with a fast, fluid motion, or in stops and starts?

Jumping -- Does your cat hesitate to take jumps that were effortless in the past?

Climbing -- Does your cat walk or run confidently on the stairs, or hesitate on each step?

Playing -- Does your cat keep up with the laser pointer, or start to lag behind?

Other noticeable behaviors, like excessive meowing, hiding away or even occasionally missing the litter box also signal that your cat is uncomfortable or in pain.

Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes.

While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.

When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

It’s important to consult with Sticky’s veterinarian at this point. Together, you can evaluate his pain level and function, and discuss options for improving his comfort. ere are treatments for cats with OA that will greatly improve his quality of life and get him back to his old self.

SWEET POTATO BLUEBERRY YOGURT MUFFINS

(NAPSI) — If you’re looking for a healthy start to your day, give California Sweet Potato Blueberry Yogurt Muffins a try. Chock full of nutrient-dense ingredients such as blueberries, yogurt and whole wheat, these powerhouse muffins have a secret ingredient: shredded California sweet potatoes. A designated superfood, California sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Plus, they keep the muffins moist and tender and add just the right amount of sweetness.

Bake a dozen (or more) and store in individual bags in the freezer for a healthy portable breakfast the entire household will enjoy.

California Sweet Potato Blueberry Yogurt Muffins

Makes 24 regular or 10 jumbo muffins

4 large eggs

1 1/2 c plain yogurt

1/2 c butter, melted

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 c all-purpose flour

1 1/2 c whole wheat flour

2 c shredded sweet potatoes

1 c sugar

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2 c blueberries

In large bowl, whisk eggs, yogurt, butter and vanilla. In medium bowl, combine flours, sweet potatoes, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Mix flour mixture into egg mixture. Gently stir in blueberries.

Divide batter between 24 regular or 10 jumbo muffin cups. Bake until golden brown and set, about 25 minutes for regular muffins or 30 for jumbo.

What time of year is best to prune everything? Are different times/seasons are best for different plants?

Whenitcomestopruning, thebesttimeof year varies depending on the specific plant and its growth habits. Different plants have different pruning requirements, and timing is crucial to ensure optimal health and growth. Here’s a generalguidelineforpruningdifferenttypesof plants throughout the year:

1. Deciduous Trees and Shrubs: Late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, is usually the best time to prune deciduous trees and shrubs. Pruning during this period allows for better visibility of the plant’s structure and promotes vigorous growth in the upcoming season. However, it is important to avoid

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

pruningduringfreezingtemperaturesorwhen the plant is actively flowering.

2. Evergreen Trees and Shrubs: Evergreen plants can be pruned throughout the year, but the best time is typically in early spring before new growth starts. This timing allows the plant to recover quickly and minimizes the risk of damage from extreme weather conditions. Light pruning can also be done in late summer to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased branches.

3. Flowering Shrubs and Trees: The timing of pruning flowering shrubs and trees depends on whether they bloom on old wood or new wood. Plants that bloom on old wood, such as lilacs and azaleas, should be pruned immediately after they finish flowering. This ensures that you don’t remove the flower buds

for the next season. For plants that bloom on new wood, like hydrangeas, it’s best to prune them in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

4. Fruit Trees: Pruning fruit trees is usually done during late winter or early spring while the trees are still dormant. This timing allows for better control of the tree’s shape, improves fruit production, and reduces the risk of disease. It’s important to follow specific pruning techniques for each type of fruit tree to maximize yield and maintain overall tree health.

5. Perennials and Herbaceous Plants: Perennials and herbaceous plants can be pruned at various times throughout the year depending on their growth habit and flowering pattern. Generally, it is best to

prune these plants in early spring before new growth emerges or in late fall after they have finished flowering. Removing dead or spent flowers, known as deadheading, can also encourage prolonged blooming and tidy up the appearance of the plants.

Remember, these guidelines are general recommendations, and it’s always best to research the specific pruning requirements for eachplant in your landscape. By understanding the best time to prune different plants, you can promote healthy growth, enhance aesthetics, and ensure the overall vitality of your garden. Additionally, pruning is a tool to help promote health and well-being, not as a means to make a plant work in a location where it isn’t suited. “Right plant, rightplace”shouldalways beemployed.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements.

Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.

If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
