Karrau residents protest contamination of creek

UPSET over contamination of a creek that runs nearby, residents of Karrau, in the Mazaruni area near the township of Bartica, yesterday blocked a roadway which passes through the community.

A standoff between the residents and police ensued, as no one claimed ownership of a truck which was placed across the roadway.

The roadway leads from a landing at Karrau into the

Mazaruni, where several mining operations are located, including one at Blue Mountain.

Toshao of Karrau, Bertille Thomas, told the Guyana Chronicle that the residents were not co-operating with the village council when the road was blocked. He said the police at Bartica were called in, and the officer in charge and several ranks hurried to the scene. He said the road provides a linkage for several persons, many of whom are not associated

with the state of the creek.

CREEK DISCOLOURED Residents noted that the creek has been polluted for several months by a miner who sat on the village council, and the situation grew worse last week when the water became completely discoloured.

However, Thomas said, no one is currently mining near the creek, and the breach of an unused tailings pond caused the discolouration of the water.

The residents were also upset that no one from the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs had paid any interest in the issue, even though a team from that Ministry was in the area recently.

Thomas noted, however, that a team of officials was indeed in the area -- at nearby Fairview village – but they were pressed for time.

PRESIDENT David Granger’s bust, like those of the country’s former Heads of State, will be placed in the Presidential Park on the Merriman Mall and become part of its infrastructure.

UNITY THEME King said the plan to mount the busts of the former heads of state and President David Granger’s fits into the current leader’s ‘unity theme’, and will provide the populace with a chance to consider the contributions those persons have made towards the country’s development.

Brass Aluminum and Cast Iron Foundry (BACIF) will undertake the casting of the busts of the former heads of state and the current president.

King noted that a number of other features, such as fountains and seating accommodation, will decorate the park. “It really is a unique piece,” he said of the project, noting that it was initiated by the Georgetown municipality.

He said the council continues to open recreational green spaces for the city’s

children and the elderly.

NEW-MODEL BINS K ing noted that the council has unveiled a new model of garbage receptacles, a new design which will allow persons to separate their waste when discarding it.

The model was unveiled yesterday in front of City Hall on Regent Street.

“So we are trying this out as a pilot to raise awareness to the city and other communities,” he said.

He said the bins -- some 50 in number and costing $40,000 -- are being built locally and will be placed in various parts of the city, and business entities which are willing to partner with the council will have their corporate brands placed on the receptacles.

Belgian police hunt bombing suspects

BELGIAN police have issued a wanted notice for a suspect after bomb attacks at Brussels’ main airport and a metro station left more than 30 people dead.

The man was seen walking with two other suspects shortly before twin explosions tore through Zaventem airport.

Both men died in the attacks after detonating suicide devices, a Belgian prosecutor said.

Anti-terror raids have taken place across Belgium.

So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the attacks.

An online statement from the group said the locations were “carefully selected” and warned of worse to come for “Crusader states allied against the Islamic State”.

The US State Department has urged US citizens of “potential risks” of travelling to Europe.

“Terrorist groups continue to plan near-term attacks throughout Europe, targeting sporting events, tourist sites, restaurants and trans-

portation,” a statement said.

Belgian prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw said police were seeking a man wearing a hat and light-coloured jacket.

He said searches were taking place “in several parts of the country”, adding that an explosive device containing nails, chemical products and an IS flag were found in an apartment in the Schaerbeek area of Brussels.

reportedly followed a tip-off from a taxi driver who had driven the three suspected bombers to the airport.

The explosions happened in quick succession shortly after 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT), with some victims reportedly hit by the second blast as they tried to escape the first.

Another bomb was later found and destroyed in a controlled detonation at the scene.

The Zaventem Mayor, Francis Vermeiren, told the AFP agency the suicide attackers used bombs hidden in their suitcases.

About an hour after the airport blasts, another explosion struck the Maelbeek metro station near EU headquarters.

It has not been confirmed what caused the explosion but IS said it too was a suicide bombing.

Belgian officials put the

death toll from both attacks at more than 30, with at least 11 killed at the airport and about 20 at the metro station.

About 250 people have been injured, many of them severely.

The blasts came days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in last year’s Paris attacks which were also claimed by IS. “This is a day of tragedy, a black day,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said. “I would like to call on everyone to show calmness and solidarity.”

Belgium has raised its terrorism alert to its highest level. Three days of national mourning have been declared.

Some local transport has re-opened following a shutdown, but flights from the airport have been cancelled and the airport is unlikely

to open for several days.

Eurostar services in and out of Brussels have been suspended.

World leaders have sent condolences and messages of solidarity.

US President Barack Obama called the blasts “outrageous attacks against innocent people” while the 28 EU leaders in a joint statement - said the bombings were an “attack on our open, democratic society”.

The UN Syria envoy, Staffan de Mistura, said the attacks showed the urgent need to “extinguish the fire of war” in Syria so the focus could turn to IS. International landmarks, such as the Trevi fountain in Rome and the Eiffel Tower, have been lit up in the colours of the Belgian flag in tribute to the victims. (BBC)

Obama invokes “future of hope” for Cubans

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has invoked “a future of hope” for Cuba in an unprecedented live TV address delivered from the Grand Theatre in Havana.

President Obama said he had come to Cuba “to bury the last remnants of the Cold War” after decades of conflict. He told Cuban President Raul Castro that he did not need to fear a threat from the US nor from “the voice of the Cuban people”.

Mr Obama is the first sitting US President to visit Cuba in 88 years. In his keynote speech on the last day of his three-day visit to Communist-run Cuba, Mr Obama said it was time for the United States and Cuba to leave the past behind and make a “journey as friends and as neighbours and as family, together” towards a brighter future.

He urged Cubans to “leave the ideological battles of the past behind” and to define themselves not through their opposition to the US, but as just Cubans.

“For all the politics, people are people and Cubans are Cubans,” he said.

He said the time has come for US policy towards Cuba to change, because it had not worked and was

The embargo remains one of the main sticking points in US-Cuban relations but can only be lifted by the US Congress.

He insisted that the United States would respect the two nations’ differences and would not attempt to impose changes on the communist-run island.

But he also said he believed that citizens should be free to speak their mind without fear and to choose their Government in free elections.

He said it was no secret that the Cuban and US Governments disagreed on many

issues.

Mr Obama acknowledged that there were “flaws in the American system: economic inequality, the death penalty and racial discrimination”.

He said those were just a few samples and that Raul Castro had “a much longer list” of US shortcomings and had reminded him of many of them.

“But open debate is what allows us to get better,” he said. “Democracy is the way to solve these problems,” he added.

After the speech, Mr Obama met in private a group of prominent Cuban dissidents, the most controversial part of his itinerary in the eyes of the Cuban Government.

President Castro was visibly angered on Monday when a US reporter asked him about

political prisoners held in Cuba.

Not accustomed to prob-

ing questions from the media, President Castro challenged the reporter to give him a list of political prisoners and denied Cuba was holding any.

Just hours before Mr Obama landed in Havana on Sunday, Cuban security arrested dozens of members Ladies in White, a group which campaigns for the release of political prisoners.

President Obama ended his three-day visit after joining President Castro at the Latinoamericano stadium in Havana.

The two leaders observed a minute of silence for the victims of the attacks in Brus-

sels and watched an exhibition baseball game between the Cuban national team and the Tampa Bay Rays, which won 4-1.

From Havana, Mr Obama has travelled to Argentina.

His presence will coincide with the 40th anniversary on Thursday of the military coup that brought to power of the most brutal military regimes in the region.

Some groups are planning protests because of the alleged support American Governments gave to the military coup of 1976.

Only righteousness prevails THE holy festival of Phagwah is once again upon us, and Guyanese from all walks of life will be soaking up the spirit of the jolly occasion.

Phagwah, the Festival of Colours, as it is also called, was first brought to these shores with the arrival of Indian indentured labourers from Bharata (India), more than 170 years ago; and from the simple celebrations of the festival in their community, the occasion has, over time, grown in popularity, attracting participation from citizens of all ethnic backgrounds and beliefs.

Phagwah undoubtedly is among the unifying events in Guyana, as it brings all together and washes away, even though temporarily, vexatious issues of race, culture, religion and political affiliation. After all, the occasion is about the celebration of good over evil.

But this is just one way of looking at the ancient Spring festival Guyanese Indians today have inherited from their forefathers of a different land.

The story of Phagwah has its genesis in the story of a tyrannical king, Hiranyakashyapu, who tried for all he was worth to kill his son Prahalad, because the latter refused to worship him as god.

Legends regale us that the king was wealthy, lustful, haughty, deceitful, and arrogant; and these blinded him to his real purpose in life. But his son, even though recognising the value of obedience to his father, vehemently refused to see and honour him as the Supreme Being of Man. And this was only natural, for the boy was given in divine birth.

According to the stories, told eons ago, the Prince was a devotee of Lord Vishnu (the Sustainer of the Universe) and his arrival into the family of the despotic king happened at a time of great adharma, or unrighteousness.

Naturally, his birth was an act to restore righteousness (Dharma) in his father’s kingdom, who was a mortal, even though no ordinary human being.

King Hiranyakashyapu had been granted a boon by Brahma (the Creator), after great penance, that he would not be killed by any living or non-living creature created by him (Brahma); will not die within or outside his residence during the day or night, on the ground or in the sky, or by any weapon; and have no worthy rival in the

Protest well attended Dear Editor,

RECENT media reports about a protest organized

by Red Thread, calling for the Government to take disciplinary action against Minister of Social Protection (MSP) Volda Lawrence, have suggested that only Red Thread members were present at that protest.

In fact, Help and Shelter, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, ChildLink Inc. and Forward Guyana had also supported that protest.

We share Red Thread’s outrage over this incident, and reiterate that it is unac-

ceptable for Minister Lawrence to respond to repeated allegations of child abuse by saying that “this is a family issue that has been going on and on and on and on for whatever reason; I can’t tell you, because if I had a brother, even if there was an accusation, this is not how I would go about helping him.”

In the first place, the Minister should know that no incidence of child abuse is a “family issue.” As her own Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CPA) repeatedly tells the public, the protection of children is everyone’s business.

That being so, it is the

MSP who must take the lead to ensure that all allegations are thoroughly investigated and all victims receive supportive services.

In addition, the Ministry’s role is to provide services and support for victims and non-offending family members; not to help perpetrators.

The Minister should also be aware of the seriousness of the allegations repeated against Mr. Harding, since the CPA has been directly involved with the children who have allegedly been victimized. It remains unclear why, despite the Ministry’s knowledge of these allegations, the issue has been allowed to “go

on and on and on and on”, as the Minister stated.

At best, the Minister is unaware of the role her Ministry is required to play with respect to the protection of children; at worst, she has turned a blind eye to allegations against a member of her party. Either way, the Government must deal with this issue swiftly and decisively.

How effective is the GFF’s P.R Department?

Dear Editor, I POSE this question publicly since, to the best of my knowledge, the term/ usage of “sub-association” has ceased being used way back in 1999, and by extension has been removed from the constitution and statutes of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF). That is if my memory serves me correctly.

I was therefore left bewildered on the morning of March 16th when, upon tuning into the VOG (102.5FM) Sports News, the GFF President publicly expressed his concern about the senior national football squad being selected from a mere 3 or 4 sub-associations affiliated to the GFF!

I subsequently contacted the NCN Sports Department/VOG for confirmation of the public disclosure emanating from the GFF president. This was confirmed to be authentic, and I made the relevant observations in addition to airing my concerns regarding the national squad’s selection.

Notwithstanding, it would be remiss of me not to mention a previous question I had posed last year, prior to the commencement of the Elite League: “Would the selection of locally-based players for the senior national squad consist of Elite League players only?”

The question went unanswered at the time.

“Whenever there is decay of righteousness and there is exaltation of unrighteousness, then I myself come forth for the protection of good, for the destruction of evildoers, for the sake of firmly establishing righteousness; I am born from age to age.”

It was in keeping with this promise that Lord Vishnu came in the form of a half-man, half-lion to end the reign of King Hiranyakashyapu within the boon granted to him by Lord Brahma.

The Lord, in the Hindu Trinity, in abiding by the promise made by Brahma, visited the demonic king at twilight, which

needs to be reminded that he was once the president of an Elite League club participating in football! If it didn’t matter then, should it matter now?

Further, with a lull in activity in other associations at the senior level presently, how can the coaching/ technical staff be able to assess the performances and required standards of other players from various associations when, apart from the GFA & UDFA, Senior League matches are not being played elsewhere?

In the UDFA, costs would have to be offset for accommodation, meals and transportation! Is this within the annual budget of expenditure of the GFF? In the final analysis, it would be prudent for

the GFF President to channel his public disclosures via the Public Relations Department, if one does exist. Since whatsoever enters the public domain must always be able to withstand scrutiny, moreso within the context of constitutional and technical matters, suffice it to say that the onus is upon the GFF to ensure the sport of Association Football is being played by all of its affiliates. And it must be confirmed by each association submitting its annual calendar of activities within a specified time-frame.

The Prince in refusing to worship his father as a god, the destruction of a wealthy and powerful king, and the establishment of righteousness as supreme show that material power is all but fleeting.

So, as Guyanese celebrate Phagwah today in fun and frolic, they should all make it a duty to end the evils of hatred, greed and arrogance, and strive for a unified Guyana where all can live and work in harmony.

After all, as narrated in the story of Phagwah, only righteousness will prevail.

CoI into prison deaths…

‘Hero’ inmate saw headless body after fire AS the Commission of Inquiry into the Georgetown Prison riots continued yesterday, prisoner Steve Bacchus recounted that while he was among the first to enter the burnt Capital A block on March 3 after the deadly fire had eased, he observed a single burnt skull on a mattress, but it was severed from the prisoner’s body.

Bacchus is the prisoner who has ben credited by other prison witnesses with breaking out of his own cell on the Old Capital block to rescue those who were still alive in the burning Capital

A dormitory. He testified for the first time before the CoI yesterday.

A fire which was lit during a massive three-day prison riot ended the lives of 17 inmates and injured at least three others within the Capital A block of the Georgetown Prisons on March 3.

“I see a skull on a bed frame,” Bacchus told the Commission of Inquiry. Bacchus made the disclosure under cross-examination

by Joint Services Counsel Selwyn Pieters. He said he was at the time alone in the building after his other as-

sistants had gone downstairs with the last man who had been rescued alive. He said he observed the burnt skull while searching for his friend Germaine Otto, called ‘Fungus’, whom he had already realised was dead after his rescue mission proved that Otto was not among the survivors he and other prisoners had pulled from the building.

Only three of the dead prisoners -- Ashraf Ali, Randolph Marques and Anthony Primo -- were recognisable at the time, as the others were burnt beyond recognition, and none of the three was his close friend.

‘BURNT OFF’ After Pieters suggested to him that the dead prisoner’s head might have been chopped off, the witness said he does not believe the man was beheaded by another inmate, but that his head could have been burnt off instead.

He said he was at a window in the old Capital moments before, when he observed smoke emanating

from the Capital A building.

When he heard prisoners “hollering for help”, he did not realise they were serious; but after the cries became incessant, he began paying more attention and noticed the blaze.

Bacchus said he began shouting to officers who were in the compound to “Let us go” and put the fire out, and after he realised an

officer was not able to open the front door of Capital A with a chainsaw, he and other prisoners broke out of the Old Capital dormitory and ran to the rescue of their trapped inmates.

He said he had asked the prison officer what happened to the chainsaw after he observed that though the See page 8

Minister of Public Telecommunication with responsibility for Tourism, Cathy Hughes

and inns all across the capital city, Minister Hughes noted that Guyana is setting

the stage to be further recognised internationally.

With a massive influx of overseas-based Guyanese and tourists expected during this time, she revealed that every facility in the hospitality business in Guyana has been solidly booked from the end of April to the beginning of June. This, she said, has resulted in the Ministry lobbying homeowners in Georgetown and other parts of the country to make their spare rooms available to visitors under the bed-andbreakfast programme at the Tourism Ministry.

But the challenge is that almost every family approached has indicated that they, too, have members returning during this time.

This event provides an opportunity for producers of local goods and services to benefit significantly, once they are prepared.

Over the years, Guyanese who produce local goods and services have complained about their products being stifled because of importation of foreign good and their inability to compete on regional markets.

The limitation of packaging and export opportunities has also hindered their ability to compete at these levels, but with a projected huge arrival of tourists, Minister Hughes advised, is would be the perfect opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products and services, since many

eyes and ears would feast on Guyanese products.

“With the amount of tourists, that’s thousands of mouths to feed with Guyana’s tasty foods; thousands of feet that will walk into your businesses; thousands of people to sell your products to; and thousands of people to entertain,” she said.

And this underscored the need for businesses to advertise during this time, since, according to her, it can provide entry to them in new foreign markets.

Minister Hughes also recommended the expansion of businesses to include other products. “This is a wonderful opportunity to literally catapult our economy onto the strato-

sphere,” Minister Hughes said.

This event, though, is not centred on a commercialised theme. In fact, it is one which facilitates the gathering of like-minded souls with the Guyana Festival, exhibits, performances, and other cultural orientations dominating the festival. It is a fair where local craft rub shoulders with fashion shows, gastronomy, music and other creative art forms.

saw was working, it could not cut the door lock open, and he replied that the blade was dull.

RESCUE Bacchus called for the prisoners as he passed each of the four windows, but heard no answer until he reached the back door along the southern corridor, where he observed Michael Lewis and other prisoners panting for breath. He then alerted the prison officers that men were still alive on the block, and an officer immediately ran past him with keys and attempted to open the back door. That failed, and as prisoners assisted officers in opening the front door, thus the rescue began.

Bacchus said he and other prisoners were not directed by officers to bring out the inmates, but they did it “just went off our own free will.”

He said he and other inmates first pulled Rayon Paddy from the room and took him straight to the stretcher into the ambulance, after they observed that he had already suffered burns and was “breathing slowly”.

They were assisted by officers who made the way for them to take the then injured Paddy out.

He cannot recall who was the second victim rescued, but remembers holding

up Marcellus Verbeke while he walked out the block with burns. Officers and prisoners collected Verbeke from him, and it was then that he returned inside the block and began to cry.

Back inside the building, he saw Owen Belfield in a kneeling position and he cleared the area, removing beds while two other inmates on the rescue team lifted him out. Belfield complained that he was burnt to his side, and was at the time “just panting for breath” the witness testified.

When he returned inside the block alone, he said, “I was looking to see if I could make out my friend ‘Fungus’…to see which one of the bodies was ‘Fungus’ own,” Belfield told the CoI. Upon doing so, he saw more than nine bodies in one corner at the front of the building, while one was flat and partly out the opened door.

He saw the lifeless bodies of Ally in the toilet and Marques inside the bathroom.

Primo was in the front part of the building, while Shaka McKenzie was face down on Primo’s leg.

The prisoner expressed concern that the prison officers did not assist the prisoners while many of them had gathered at the front inside the burning building crying for help. While the lawyers suggested that the

prison officers took their own safety into consideration first, the prisoner said taking the profession of the prison officers into consideration, “they should be concerned for everybody’s safety.”

He said that although the officers had shields and some were armed with guns, they stood in the yard while prisoners broke their cells to save the helpless inmates.

REBELLION Though he admitted the situation which led to the disaster could be termed a massive rebellion, with prisoners all around the prison chanting against the prison officers for assaulting a prisoner, Collis Collison, he said that should not have prevented the officers from saving the men, who were at that moment desperate for their lives.

“They would not assault anybody… At that point in time they would glad fuh anybody come and save them, even a lil baby,” the prisoner stated.

PILGRIM HAILED Meanwhile, the witness praised the efforts of Officer-in-Charge Kevin Pilgrim in making life better within the walls of the penitentiary in the short time he was placed in that position. He said that while Director of Prisons Carl Graham is also doing a great job, there was

something admirable about the way Pilgrim operates.

Bacchus said he saw Pilgrim and another prison officer whose name he gave as ‘Charles’ assisting inmates who were injured in the fire on March 3.

“Mr. Pilgrim, who is the present OC, since he turned the OC of the prison, I don’t know if it was an act of impulse or if it was a strategy he came with, but the prison is running kinda smooth,” the prisoner stated. He said he has been impressed with the new prison boss giving prisoners new opportunities and privileges with more involvement in sports, a lot of activities going on. “He had a lot of classes conducted.”

OVERPOPULATION “The strategy he was using, he had the jail at a calm level,” the prisoner said, adding that prior to March 2, the prison had been incident-free and without fights.

Bacchus said that although Pilgrim and Director Carl Graham were attentive to prisoners’ needs, overpopulation is still an issue within the central penitentiary.

“More beds is needed because presently the prison is getting overpopulated.”

In the old Capital in some cases, two prisoners sleep on one bed, he disclosed. This overpopulation has resulted in more quarrels, since in-

dividuals are uncomfortable with others touching them.

He also pointed out that many less fortunate people become part of the jail population “and they does pick up people stuff.”

Asked if he is satisfied with the food at prison, Bacchus responded, “I don’t complain because whatever comes I still gatto rap with it.”

Under re-examination by the Commission’s Counsel, Excellence Dazzell, Bacchus said ever since he has been a prisoner at the Camp Street jail, the standards there have risen “a bit” since Pilgrim was placed there as OC. He said that when Pilgrim assumed leadership, the prison started to “run smooth” and prisoners get an opportunity to speak with the new OC more regularly than in the past, and he would try his best to address prisoners’ matters.

He said Pilgrim also ensured that prisoners engage in games and other activities, and more programmes have been introduced into the prison for the benefit of prisoners.

Bacchus told the Commission that prisoners are usually searched thoroughly for illegal items before entering the prison.

SMUGGLING PHONES He said mobile phones

are in prison, and explained that for the phones to get into the prisoners’ hands, sometimes “people does bomb it” or throw it over the fence, and sometimes the “officers would bring it” through smuggling, “maybe if they are paid to do so.”

According to the prisoner, lighting of fires in the prison is nothing new, since there have been fires which have been put out by prison officers.

Prisoners light fires because they want to have their cases heard before the court, or because they were being victimized by the police or magistrates, or were wrongfully charged.

He said that in such cases, when the fire officers put the fire out, the prisoners would get an opportunity to speak to the officer-in-charge or other prison officials. However, sometimes the prisoner’s problem is beyond the control of the officer-in-charge, and needs the attention of other officials.

As much as the prison officials could do, they would try to do, the prisoner said, and he observed that when officers come, if the prisoners complain of needing beds, the officers would provide those beds if they can.

George Talbot is new Ambassador to Brazil

THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Agrément was received from the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil for the appointment of George Wilfred Talbot as Guyana’s next resident Ambassador to Brazil.

A release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday noted that Mr. Talbot is a career diplomat who joined the Foreign Service in 1993. He currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, a position he held since January 2012.

He is also the current non-resident Ambassador to the State of Israel and non-resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Namibia.

Mr. Talbot has extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy. He has represented his country at the UN and at other international fora on economic, social, political and related issues. He headed the delegation in New York during Guyana’s chairmanship of the Rio Group in 2006, and the Union of South American Nations in 2011.

He has held several posts on UN intergovernmental bodies, including Chairman of the Economic and Financial Committee of the UN General Assembly at its sixty-seventh

No salary increase for sugar workers

THE Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has officially informed the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) that there will be no increase in wages and salaries for sugar workers for the year 2015.

GuySuCo said in a statement yesterday that it met with the unions to discuss the claims submitted on increases for 2015 at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Estate, and that through its Finance Director Paul Bhim had laid out the details of the current financial status of the corporation -- details that paint “a very grim picture of the realities for 2015.”

As such, the company says, Bhim made it clear there will be no increase in wages and salaries for 2015.

“The Corporation also informed the unions of the impact that the El Nino situation will have on the sugar production target for the first crop,” GuySuCo said.

“The projected figure is 80,270 tonnes for the first crop, and the variance is likely to be 12,500 tonnes,” it added.

Noting that the meeting between the two sides was cordial and was “conducted in a most professional manner,” GuySuCo said: “While the unions expressed some disappointment with the position taken by the company, a decision was arrived at for a subsequent meeting to discuss other benefits.”

Noting further that the Corporation has, in recent weeks, been informing employees about its current financial position and the relevant actions being undertaken on the road to recovery, GuySuCo said in closing: “We would therefore like to express our gratitude to our employees, who are our most valuable asset.

“In addition, the management wishes to express its appreciation to our employees for their patience, support, and hard work as the organization navigates a new path to its recovery”, the

Three murder accused remanded CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday remanded three men who appeared before her accused of the murder of remigrant Soesdyke farmer Anthony Breedy.

Paul Moriah, 28-yearold vendor of Grove Squatting Area, EBD; and Donnel Trapp, 21, and Kemo Corbin, both of Timehri, East Bank Demerara were not required to plead to the capital offence.

The three men are charged jointly with having, between March 12-14, 2016 at Hill Foot, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, murdered the

60-year-old pensioner. The men were all unrepresented.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers did not reveal the facts to the court, but explained that the post-mortem performed on Breedy was incomplete and a few statements were still in the process of being completed.

Magistrate McLennan adjourned the matter until April 18.

The battered body of Breedy was found in his home two Mondays ago. His head was bashed in and his hands and feet were bound.

His SUV was also missing.

Police, acting on intelligence,

went to Nabaclis and arrested Moriah, who was in possession of the dead man’s ATM card and his missing SUV. After his arrest, Moriah confessed to the murder and implicated Trapp and Corbin.

They were subsequently arrested in Ithaca, West Bank Berbice, in a house which police and members of the SWAT Team had swooped down on.

After their arrest, they are reported to have taken investigators to a location where they had hidden a gun and matching ammunition.

During their subsequent interrogation, they also admit-

ted that they had conspired to commit the heinous crime.

Breedy was the lone occupant of his house at the time of the incident. The gruesome discovery of his murder was made by a friend who had gone to the Hill Foot residence to check-up on him. Breedy was last seen by residents on the Saturday night of March 12.

Breedy had previously worked as an Agriculture Officer in Montserrat.

He reportedly returned to Guyana last year, and had since spent most of his time farming in the vicinity of the Soesdyke Highway.

Berbice man hospitalised from chopping incident

A cane harvester of Belvedere Squatting Area on the Corentyne Coast in East Berbice has been brutally chopped by three cutlass-wielding men who invaded his home on Monday.

Twenty-year-old Yuvraj Ramphal, called “Head”, has been hospitalised following the incident. According to the man’s wife, Bibi Khan, called “Shabana”, she was awoken by a noise around 03:00hrs, and went to see where the sound was coming from, thus she encountered three men in their one bedroom house.

She said she immediately called out to her husband, but by then the men were already in their bedroom and had dealt him several chops.

“Me hear ah door chain knock and went fe see wha happen, and me see three man in the house with cutlass, me call out to me husband, ‘babe, somebody in the house’ but them man reach the netting as he been a come out and start firing bare chop on he.”

She related that her husband pleaded with the men to stop chopping him, and even enquired who they were looking for.

“He ask them, ‘oow, ah yuh stop nah; a who you come fah?” but the men did not relent, and her husband ran out of the net and through the back door with the men in chase “firing chops”.

Yuvraj Ramphal Khan said as the men exited, she ran to check on her two children, who were awoken by the incident.

Thankfully, they were not hurt, and she went outside to see where her husband was.

“Me go outside and see blood on the ground, and follow am to couple house away, whe me see nuff nuff blood on the ground and them people them carry he to hospital already,” she related.

Khan said she immediately called the Albion Police Station, but did not get any response. Several other attempts proved futile.

She then called the Whim Police Station, but was told that the matter is for Albion, since it happened in

that jurisdiction.

Frustrated, the woman called the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, but a rank who answered the phone asked what the issue was, and when she told him, he said he would make contact with his colleagues at the Albion Police Station.

Khan tried calling the Albion Police Station again, but in all her attempts the phone rang out, and she decided to again call the Whim Police Station.

The policeman at Whim who answered the phone promised to send the patrol.

When the police eventually came, Khan related, they looked at the bloody bed and her neighbour’s yard, and asked her to relate what had happened.

The woman said she did, and the law enforcement officials promised to return later in the morning to conduct their investigations, but they never returned.

Khan told this publication that she is frustrated by lack of cooperation from the police. She related that although she does not know the men, she can positively identify them.

Meanwhile, Ramphal, who lost a finger in the chopping, is recovering at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

He sustained chops to the left hand and shoulder, and has a gaping wound to the head.

Guyana Chronicle understands that this is the third time an incident of this nature has occurred to Ramphal. He is described as a quiet person by his mother. His mother wants answers as to who and why someone would want to hurt her son.

The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

representation of being the first of its kind in the Caribbean, but is often taken for granted.

Then there is the Demerara Harbour Bridge, which is the first floating bridge to be constructed in the Caribbean. Measuring 6074ft, this bridge was designed by a Guyanese, Captain John Coghlan. What is noteworthy ,too, is the fact that it was designed only to last 10 years but has been in existence and full operation for 38 years.

However, Guyana’s achievement is not limited

to infrastructure development.

And Minister Hughes sought to highlight this by referencing outstanding Guyanese who all gained international recognition for their contributions in various sectors.

And there waAmong them are former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Sir Shridath Ramphal; the first female Chief Justice and the first female Judge at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Madame Desiree Bernard; Mohamed Shahabuddeen, a Judge at the

International Court; and former West Indies Captain, Clive Lloyd.

According to the Minister, the Jubilee Celebration has been carved into six main components, with the opening night facilitating spiritual upliftment through ceremony. The second night will showcase “everything Guyanese” including exciting performances from each of the country’s ten administrative regions and by each of the six ethnic groups.

The third night of celebration will present a kaleidoscope of Guyana’s living

musicians who have been touring the world over the past 30 years. The following night will be the ‘Next Generation’ which puts on show Guyanese who are international recording artistes, dancers, dramatists and other internationally-recognised persons in the arts.

This will be succeeded

by Guyana’s biggest fashion extravaganza, which will be staged in the afternoons from Thursday to Sunday. According to her, every acclaimed Guyanese designer will put on show their best designs.

Also, the Guyana festival which will be hosted at the Guyana National Stadium will showcase Guyanese products, including tasty dishes and beverages, arts and craft items, and other art forms.

And with the Jubilee Festival being a rare opportunity to show the world the best of Guyana’s culture, Minister Hughes noted, the country will get the recognition that it has always been striving for.

“We have to present our country as it is: strong, united and free,” she said passionately.

Caribbean could benefit from better Cuba/US relations ‒ Greenidge A SHIFT in the United States’ foreign policy towards Cuba could be of benefit to Guyana and the Caribbean in particular.

This is according to Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge, who said Guyana has been pushing for closer relations between

Four Miles land issues to be settled soon RESIDENTS of the Region One (Barima –Waini) community of Four Miles have been assured that their outstanding land issues would not only be investigated but completed within three months.

The assurance came from Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, during a recent meeting with the community’s residents.

He was accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes; and Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe.

The residents raised concerns over their community being designated an Amerindian reservation, since 80 per cent of the persons residing there are non-Amerindians.

Samuel Benjamin, who has been residing in the community for about 28 years, explained that when he first settled in the area, “It was an open expanse run by the Port Kaituma Neighbourhood Democratic Council.”

He said that, subsequently, the residents agreed to form the area into a community. However, on the day when they were to elect councillors, they were told that only a person of Amerindian extraction could become chairperson of the community, thus most of the residents objected to this decision.

Benjamin noted that, over the years, letters were sent to the previous government, requesting that officials visit the community and investigate the matter, but no one came.

He said the election of a toshao without prior consultation with the residents caused a division within the community.

He is asking that the present Government intervene and resolve the issue, so the community can move forward with its development.

During the meeting at the Four Miles Community Centre, Minister Trotman asked that government be given three months to investigate the matter.

“Let us hold the peace,” he urged, adding: “And I am expecting that within a matter of three months the most, not that the process will start, but it will be started and completed.”

He, however, asked that, in the meantime, residents remain calm. “Mr. James did not name himself the toshao,” he said. “And so I will ask that, in the meantime, show each other some respect. Every problem has a solution. These are difficulties we have inherited, but it doesn’t make sense we go back to who did what.

Right now, we have to find solutions to an issue, and that is why we are here,” the minister explained. He added that he now has information he could take to Cabinet.

“We have a serious problem in Four Miles, and we will have to fix it for the benefit of everyone,” he assured.

According to Trotman, a team of officers from the Lands and Surveys Department and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs will be visiting the community shortly, and the issue would be settled definitively and in accordance with the law.

timate the value of greater dialogue between the countries in this wider region,” Greenidge noted.

He is of the view that the new relationship will help Cuba and the region, as improved prosperity is something that the region can benefit from, because Cuba is potentially a very significant player in the region.

“Cuba, it must be noted, was a major player in the global tourist sector. It still has the capacity, and it is also a place where technical skills are pretty high compared to many other

parts of this hemisphere,” the Foreign Minister noted.

Greenidge said that in these circumstances the improved relations would enable the region to integrate at a lesser cost and with positive benefits for all the players in the region.

“To the extent that the political dialogue facilitates greater economic cooperation, greater technical assistance, and integrated and larger markets, Guyana stands to benefit; and the rest of the region will benefit from that enhancement of the relationship with the US,” Greenidge said.

The Caribbean and other nations have long called for an end to the various embargos placed on Cuba by the United States. US President Barack Obama recently ended a three-day visit to the island state, the second by a US President. The first visit to Cuba by a US President was in 1928, by then President Calvin Coolidge. The US formally restored diplomatic ties with Cuba on December 14, 2015, a move which was welcomed by Guyana and other regional countries. (GINA)

According to her sonin-law Krishna, his wife received a call from her mother after 2am on Monday and was told that bandits were trying to gain access to her home. Elsie was subsequently advised to secure the locks and valuables.

He then decided to enter the building by removing some louvre panes. Sensing something amiss, he visited her bedroom and discovered the lifeless body lying on

Elsie was described as a peaceful and easygoing individual who never wore jewelry or anything that would attract unnecessary attention. According to the dead woman’s daughter, the house was broken into, but nothing was missing.

“Her mouth and face had marks like if someone strangled her with a pillow,” Elsie’s daughter said. She added that her mother was also a hypertensive case, and was living alone for the past 20 years, but was never the victim of a break-in.

Relatives are hoping that a Post-Mortem can be done early, in spite of the current holiday period.

Linden minibus driver shot dead

FIFTY-THREE-year-old ELVIN Lorrimer of 184 Cato Street, Old Kara Kara, Linden succumbed during surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being shot by two armed men at the Linden bus park on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

The gunmen reportedly pulled up at the side of the bus Lorrimer drives and opened fire on him, hitting him in his chest and foot before escaping on a motor cycle.

Police confirmed that the incident occurred at 21:00hrs.

Lorrimer’s only daughter, Mary Lorrimer, said the family was informed of the tragedy by another driver, who told them that Lorrimer was shot and robbed of his money and cell phone while soliciting passengers to return to Linden.

Family members then rushed to the city, but were unable to see him, as he was in surgery.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited Lorrimer’s home, his wife was too distraught to

Asthma patients unhappy with treatment at GPHC, Diamond Hospital

AT LEAST three asthma patients have complained bitterly about the treatment meted out to them when they sought emergency help at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the Diamond Hospital.

All three individuals were told by those in charge

In one instance, a young woman who lost consciousness fell off the bench at GPHC; and even then, all that the nurse said was that there was no attendant to

help her up.

A kaleidoscope of colours: Phagwah explained

PHAGWAH, or Holi, as it is popularly called, is unique, and is the Hindu Festival of Spring. India is called the cradle of different civilisations and cultures, and the seed-bed of many festivals. The Phagwah, or Holi, festival is unique among all these, as it represents the social and religious values of the Hindu people.

Phagwah in Sanskrit literature is described as “Vasant Utsav”, meaning ‘spring festival’. In North East India it is called Phagwah, but in all other parts of India it is known as Holi. Phagwah is etymologically based on the word ‘Phalgun’, the name of the month which begins from Mid-February and ends Mid-March.

This is the last month of the Hindu Year, or Hindu Calendar. The first month of the Hindu Year is called “Chaitra”, which falls in Phalgun. On this joyous occasion, people ring out the Old Year, as it is with the traditional Western Old Year’s Night celebration, and herald the coming of the New Year with great joy. This is done through the celebration of the Phagwah, of Holi, Festival.

This grand festival is also based on the legend of Prahalad and his father, the demon king Hiranyakashyapu, who had a sister by name of Holika. Holika, the Aunt of Prahalad, offered to help her brother, the wicked king, to destroy the innocent and divine child Prahalad by sitting in a bonfire with him.

Because of his love, devotion and adoration for God (Lord Vishnu), Prahalad suffered all sorts of persecutions from the hands of his own father. Despite these tribulations and untold miseries, he did not give up uttering the hollowed name of God. Fire, water, wild elephants and the venom of poisonous snakes did not harm Prahalad because God walked with him in all of his difficult moments. Thus the all merciful Lord rescued his devotee from many dangers and difficulties. However, even today, throughout the Hindu world, a bonfire is being made to symbolise the destruction of Holika and to remind us that those who molest or distress the devotees of God will eventually be punished by their own actions. The story is well known: that Lord Vishnu, in

the form of Nar-Simha (man-lion), killed Hiranyakashipu and re-established righteousness by installing the virtuous Prahalad on the throne of his father to rule the Kingdom.

INCE the indentured labourers brought the festival to these shores, it has been celebrated with much pomp and flair.

Throughout the years, as the celebrations grew in size as well as popularity with the Guyanese public, all ethnicities have joined in.

It’s not uncommon to see Afro-Guyanese throwing buckets of water on each other. In recent years, communities like Albouystown, Charlestown and Sophia -- considered Afro-Guyanese areas -- have been “playing Phagwah”.

“As a child growing up, you looked forward to Phagwah Day,” recounts Elizabeth, a senior citizen who grew up on the Essequibo Coast.

“We use to lurk in alleyways and throw water on our school friends.”

She went on to talk about how Africans and Indians in her younger days did not enjoy close relations, but Phagwah used to be a unifier, as all would indulge in the frolic.

It is not uncommon to see Guyanese of all ages coming together in a spirit of unity that gives life to this holiday.

From the streets of urban communities to the open fields of the country areas, to the National Stadium, each community does it differently.

In the communities of Albouystown and Charlestown, residents, as early as 06:00 hrs, awake and arm themselves with buckets as well as water guns in preparation for the water battle that will ensue.

Who is their enemy, you may ask? And the answer is a simple one. None; but anyone who is walking on the road or driving is set upon by the multitude, and gets a good soaking.

On the other hand, there are the other communities and villages, whose celebrations are quite as “wild”. Their celebrations come in the form of powder, abeer, and water. The schools do it best, using water balloons and baby powder.

These children, in a sense of camaraderie, break the rules to enjoy the fun even that occurs once every year.

Phagwah is, no doubt, the festival of colour. It gives us an opportunity to reunite with family, friends and dear ones. This festivity brings colours into the lives of people when they can take a break from life and share the joy with loved ones.

On this joyous day, Hindus also go to temples in the morning, and share sweetmeats in the afternoon.

This afternoon, the National Stadium is the place to be, as Inspire Inc will be hosting their annual Phagwah Festival. The programme is expected to commence at 15:00 hours.

altation of unrighteousness, then I myself come forth for the protection of Good, for the destruction of evildoers, for the sake of firmly establishing righteousness; I am born from age to age.

Lord Vishnu came in his fourth avatar (i.e. Nar-simha) and destroyed the wicked King, thus fulfilling what Bhagavad Gita has declared in the abovementioned verses. Prahalad here represents a believer of Supreme power, which exists everywhere in the world. This power is a spiritual one and is based on true faith in God. Hiranyakashyapu, on the other hand, represents the materialistic power, as he regarded himself as Supreme and had no real idea of God. The story shows the triumph of spiritualism over materialism.

The story of Prahalad is significant in its message, especially to the youths of today: that waiting for a special time in life to turn to God is procrastination beyond any reasonable judgment. More things are wrought with prayer than the world dreams of.

God will take care of our anxieties, and restore in us faith and confidence in those who turn to Him. Such self-confidence will build today’s youths morally as well as spiritually, and establish in us character, caliber, and the capacity to be ideal men and women of today’s society.

We look for scientific answers even in religion today. Hinduism provides answers to all of Man’s questions. What man shall sow with the new ideas, the new opportunities which science is showering upon him does not depend on science itself, but upon what man wants to do with them; and this, in turn, depends upon his scale of values.

It is here that religion can become a dominant factor. Religion and science do not oppose each other: Science supplies matter, Religion prescribes matter. Without science the world would be poor, without religion it would be barbarous.

Religion enhances our idea; science gives it in a practical shape. Religion and science maintain the balance of power, and reinstate in man a state of mental equilibrium. Religion gives tone to life and helps us to develop the proper attitude towards life. It gives an ethical outlook which leads to the proper embellishment of life.

Religion is generally understood to define man’s relationship with God; but, really speaking, it defines all types of relations: between man and God, between man and man, and between man and his surroundings. Thus religion is all-comprehensive and embraces life in all aspects. Therefore Holi, or Phagwah, the Festival of Spring, recreates Man’s identity with Nature.

The story of Prince Prahalad reminds us that the drama of life is the enacting of the lessons of wisdom and innocence that mould and shape out lives and our personalities from the earliest years of our indentured fore-parents, who brought these festivals such as Phagwah from India to such lands as Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname, Jamaica, Mauritius and Fiji, etc.

The saga of life is to be proud that we belong to such ancient culture and tradition, which had influenced our attitudes and decisions; for we, too, like our foreparents, are garnered by the ideals of our rich civilisation and culture. Holi, or Phagwah, transcends all barriers of creed and sectarianism in true spirit of inner holiness in everyone.

This festival of renewal most likely predated the Sarasvati Valley Civilisation, the world’s first significant civilization, which flourished between 5000 BCE and 2600 BCE. Even though the culture landscape in Bharat had changed, from time to time, from the introduction of the Negroids followed by the Proto-Australoids, Dravidians, Mongoloids, Caucasians, Persians, Greeks, Shakas, Kushanas, Huns, Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Mughals and Europeans, the festival of Holi emerged, survived, and flourished in Bharat, the world’s first melting pot.

Holi was brought to British Guiana by Hindus who arrived here as indentured labourers to work on sugar plantations 177 years ago, and was sustained by the majority of approximately 239,000 Bharatiyas who arrived on these shores between 1838 and 1917.

Phagwah was transplanted from a large sub-continent characterised by the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, to Guyana, a small South American land of dry and rainy seasons; and even though global warming is creating climatic havoc, the symbolism of Holi must not be lost.

The IAC therefore calls upon all the citizen of this multi-cultural land of Guyana to regard the great festival of Phagwah, or Holi -- which celebrates life and hope, regardless of demography or geography -- always as a focus for national unity.

Holi emphasises oneness

HOLI, or Phagwah, is a unique and colourful Hindu festival. It possesses an unparalleled social dimension which is conducive to reunion, exchanges, and togetherness in an atmosphere of absolute cordiality.

The social aspect of Holi does not, in any way, obscure its rich spiritual values and message of resistance to evil, which were demonstrated in the life of the devoted Prince Prahalad.

Prahalad’s determination not to accept any mortal as Supreme, and to resist any imposition which curtails Man’s inherent freedom to think and to enjoy free will and unhindered freedom of expression in a just and fair system is recalled on the eve of Holi -- Holika Dahan. The pyre built on Phalgun Purnima is reminiscent of Prahalad remaining untouched by the fire through the dint of faith and devotion.

Utsav, or Spring Festival. It commemorates the advent of spring and the regeneration of nature from her slumber. It is a time when nature smiles in all her grandeur, and the trees and plants blossom forth into vivid colours, combining the rich hues of the flowers with the pleasant odours of the fruits.

The word Holi comes from the Sanskrit word hola, meaning grains. The word Phagwah is derived from phalgun, the name of the last month on the Hindu calendar.

Thus Holi, or Phagwah, heralds the Hindu New Year.

Phagwah is the loveliest of our festivals, and is celebrated in an atmosphere of absolute equality. Every barrier is removed, and celebrants are virtually lost in the pomp and gaiety which Holi brings.

Our celebration must match this beautiful season, and all unhealthy practices which mar and pollute this unique and colourful festival must cease. Drenching each other with water, dumping each other in trenches, and dabbing noxious substances must be stamped out. Phagwah must be played only with persons who are desirous of doing so.

Celebrate, and do so happily; but do remember the significance of the festival, which sends a clear signal of respect for human rights, so bravely fought for and won

by Prahalad. No event alien to Sanatan Dharma should be held, and if so held, it should not be supported. Though a happy season, Holi has its profound spiritual content.

How Phagwah is celebrated around the world

UST as with the many other major Hindu festivals, the large Indian majority (about 63 per cent) celebrate Holi with a lot of enthusiasm in the island of Mauritius.

It is an official holiday in the country, and therefore people get all the time to make merry and drench themselves in the spirit of Holi and, of course, coloured water.

Hindus in Mauritius duly perform the tradition of Holika Dahan, or lighting of bonfire, on the eve of Holi, and celebrate the victory of good over evil.

PAKISTAN Hindus residing in Pakistan also celebrate holi, though of course in not as grand a fashion as seen in India.

People celebrate the victory of good over evil forces by lighting bonfires, called Holika.

The tradition comes from the legend of Prahalad and Hiranyakashyapu. In fact, people follow the same traditions and rituals as in India, due to their roots in India. People clean their houses and prepare special delicacies like gujiyas, papri and dahi badas. They meet up with friends and play with the colours, dance, and generally have a good time.

SOUTH AFRICA Indians, wherever they may be, take immense delight in celebrating the festival of Holi, and South Africa is no exception.

The vibrant Gujaratis and other Indians settled in South Africa have made it a point to keep the tradition of celebrating Holi alive in the country.

They play colours; light bonfires, called Holika; sing Holi songs, and make merry. The evenings are spent in meeting friends and relatives, and exchanging greetings and sweets.

People believe that it is becoming all the more important to keep the ancient customs alive in this conflict-ridden society. The festival of Holi is vital in this aspect, as it is believed that Holi helps people to get closer.

It generates warmth in relationships, and even enemies turn friends in the spirit of Holi.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO Holi is celebrated with a lot of pomp in the twin-island state of Trinidad and Tobago, which has a large Indian diaspora. There, it is largely known as Phagwa.

Holi is said to have come to Trinidad around 1845, by the Hindus who migrated from Bihar as contractual labourers on the sugarcane field. Since then, it is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm.

In the early days, the festival was observed very modestly because of the many constraints that the Hindus had to deal with. But today it is celebrated at a national level in a grand style throughout Trinidad.

Just as their counterparts in India, Hindus in Trinidad and Tobago celebrate the festival with colours, songs, music and dance. A variety of water colours are mixed and sprayed on all those who participate in the celebrations till they become unrecognisable. People also exchange sweets and greetings with each other. Hard feelings or animosities, if any, are also washed down with the coloured waters of Holi, and general harmony prevails.

UNITED KINGDOM Hindus settled in UK do not miss out on the excitement of Holi celebrations, and enjoy same to the hilt. Zeal for the festival is particularly marked in this country, as Indians constitute the second largest ethnic minority.

Celebrating festivals helps them to feel close to their families and their cultural roots.

The celebration of Holi is noticeable at places that witness a large congregation of Indians.

The British city of Leicester is particularly known for its love for celebrating Indian festivals.

Excitement reaches its peak when the occasion is that of celebrating a joyous festival like Holi.

Children love to use their spray cans and colour each other. Holi parades are also staged, and in the evening people visit their friends and relatives to exchange greetings and sweets.

They hug each other and also apply the tilak as the meet Holi in a traditional manner.

With a large population of Indians settled in the United States of America, Holi is celebrated with gaiety and lots of fanfare in this country.

Different societies formed by the Indians and religious organisations help people to celebrate this joyous festival and feel close to their cultural roots. Musical programmes and Holi Meets are also organised by them to mark the occasion. These meets help the new generation to identify with their cultural roots. Children learn to understand the significance of celebrating festivals, and know legends associated with them.

Holi, or Phagwah, is a seasonal festival which predates the Vedic era. From remote antiquity, this festival was celebrated with great pomp and joy by all cross-sections of the Hindu community.

Phagwah symbolises the freedom from confinement in every regard. It is a time when nature exhibits its beauty with the introduction of the spring season. With the advent of spring, Life

blooms in every kingdom.

The plants, animals, birds and humans welcome and celebrate the freedom influenced Mother Nature’s hospitality.

The season offers many opportunities for human reflection. Every human being should aspire to be a product of liberation. In simple terms, Man should recognise he is more a product of divinity than sin. Liberation, the high point of the Hindu Life, can

be achieved only when the divine inherent potentialities in the individual is explored and exploited to its fullest extent. The capacity for such an exploration solely depends on the discriminate power of the aspirant; i.e. to be loyal to our conscience, rather than be a slave to our minds and senses.

Phagwah also sends the message of integration and cohesion. The multi-colours associated with the festi-

val are a clear testimony of varieties adding to nature’s beauty.

It is the conflux of different flowers that influences the delight of the gardener; likewise, when there is human integration and cohesion, God, the great gardener, becomes delighted.

The changing season also sends the undisputable message of the dynamics of change. All changes at every level are influenced by Mother Nature’s hospitality: whether the movement of sea shells, the flow of the river, and the changes in body structure or even organisational changes; all inevitably are materialised by the power of nature, and should be accepted, like the different seasons. The phenomenal changes of life are transitory, and are not considered adversely by the wise.

The message of good triumphing over evil must not be overlooked. The story of Bhakt Prahalaal and his tyrant father Hiranyakashipu should never be forgotten.

There is no crime in civil resistance.

Bhakt Prahalaal never resorted to violence; he excluded himself from the political affairs of the kingdom, which was ruled through dictatorship. He didn’t allow himself to be bullied by the opposing forces created by his father.

As a matter of fact, he never wanted to inherit a kingdom that is rooted in violence and atrocities.

It was this type of resistance Mahatma Gandhiji emulated to confront his oppressors. Gandhiji’s victory over the British oppressors was a clear indication that hate, violence and war are not the answers to any crisis.

It is Bhakt Prahalaal who set the standard to befriend the one all-pervasive God, and strengthened his faith with that all-powerful Lord to weaken the dictatorship of his father and to create a new epoch, where righteousness and Dharm were established.

Holi is also a time for sharing. It is a time when farmers and peasant celebrate the harvesting of their crops and, at the same time, indulge in yagnas and pujas, thanking God for his benedictions and also securing blessings for their future crops. Basant therefore sends a universal message which has the potentialities to remove hopelessness and reinstate confidence.

May all be blessed through the significance of the festival.

In the story of Phagwah, there is evidence that the dark forces of evil were eventually conquered by the forces of truth. The symbol of the burning of Holika serves to reinforce the fact that no matter what, once our intentions and actions are malicious, the results will always remain destructive.

Sowing evil will result in degeneracy and decay.

Wrongdoers will be punished in order for them to change.

‘Next Generation Foundation’ geared to help underprivileged kids THE ‘Next Generation Foundation’, a facility that intends to assist any underprivileged child, was yesterday officially launched in Guyana by overseas-based Guyanese Keevi Browne.

A simple ceremony held to signify this opening was held at Malteenoes Sports Club on Thomas Lands, Georgetown and saw in attendance local Director Shawn Holder and Deputy Commander of Police ‘A’ Division, Fazil Karimbaksh; and Commanders of ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions: Ian Amsterdam and Marlon Chapman respectively.

Children from the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre and the Joshua House also comprised part of the audience, and enjoyed many goodies, compliments of Ms. Browne.

UNDERPRIVILEGED KIDS The foundation, originally from the United States, decided last October to work along with overseas sponsors to build community centres for the benefit of underprivileged kids and shelters throughout Guyana.

“This foundation and its work (are) very humbling.

It’s one thing to receive these blessings, but another

thing to give back,” said Browne.

The facility will help children and young adults -- even those who are disabled -- to learn how to do little things, such as preparing a resume and using a computer. The first event it held was a toy drive in December.

“A lot of my fundraising is done overseas, and I bring everything here.

We will be working with Joshua House; the GPF, that work with kids in bad communities, and anyone who needs it. We are still looking for office space and property. We have a lot of work to do,” Browne explained.

She recalled her family always being into charity and said that this may have influenced her interest in being of help to others.

“When I came back to Guyana last year, I realized how much I can be of help here when I saw how many kids can be helped through this foundation,” Browne said.

Within the next two to five years, she disclosed, they intend to build four or five shelters in various communities across the country.

means of the foundation, every child will be given the opportunity to learn, dream and develop. “I was once underprivileged like them. The idea is not about presenting gifts and learning ideas, but we want scholarships to be provided to help these children qualify and further develop their skills. Plans are also ahead to introduce the children to various sporting activities.”

According to Holder, the Malteenoes Sports Club will be made into one of the buildings at which the children can learn to develop their skills in cricket, table tennis and the like. “It’s a burning desire of mine to help in this way,” said Holder.

GuyExpo aims to revive economy UNDER the theme “Promoting Enterprise, Driving Productivity”, GuyExpo 2016 is aiming at reviving Guyana’s economy through marketing of goods and services; and through partnership with the private and public sectors and the diaspora.

Handling preparations for the event are Coordinator of GuyExpo 2016, Temeca Sukhdeo-Singh, Public Relations Manager Lloyd David, and Hospitality Manager Chevon Lim. Dawn Holder-Alert is the Chair of the Expo.

Speaking with Guyana Chronicle, the coordinator said this year the Expo fell under the Ministry of Business, and the focus was to ensure that there was a business focus which targeted micro, small and medium and large enterprises.

Adding that the aim was to increase productivity, Sukhdeo-Singh explained that there was need for businesses to aim for the export market in all industries and sectors.

“There are markets available, but one of the problems we find is that we can’t produce enough to export, and we are trying to promote or facilitate that environment (wherein) businesses can have the opportunity to increase their production and assist them with that export market,” the coordinator said.

She said there would be workshops for the exhibitors, which will run concurrently with the exhibition.

Other areas of focus include marketing and packaging, promotion, business plan, access to financing, training and education.

Girl power! Breaking the taboo

By Becky Pemberton THE Holi festival in India is one of the world’s most extravagant and colourful celebrations, and this year’s festivities have been no different.

Except for the fact that tradition has been broken in the holy city of Vrindavan, where about 1,000 widows who are expected to live out their days in quiet worship have been able to allowed join in.

The country’s millions of observant Hindu widows are typically barred from all religious festivities because their very presence is considered Women singing and praying before the start of the celebrations inauspicious, but images show beaming women in saris showered in rainbow-coloured petals and powder, joy etched on their faces.

The celebration at the Gopinath Temple, 112 miles south-east of New Delhi, is a joy long denied.

“I am so happy; I am playing Holi after 12 years. I am happy; very happy,” said Samaddar, who appeared to be in her early 30s.

The powder made her white sari and those of the widows around her shimmer in myriad colours.

So deep is the ostracization of widows that they’re often shunned by their families, and forced to seek shelter in temples.

CITY OF WIDOWS The holy city of Vrindavan in India’s Uttar Pradesh state is known as the City of Widows, because it has given so many women shelter. And in recent years, widows have found a bit of colour and joy here as well.

Aid group Sulabh International has been organizing regular Holi celebrations in Vrindavan since 2013. Samaddar and more than 1,000 other widows gathered in the courtyard of one of the city’s oldest temples devoted to Krishna, the most playful of the Hindu gods.

The festival of Holi falls on Thursday this year, but in Vrindavan and many other parts of the country, the playing of colours begins a week ahead.

Hindu priests chanted religious verses as hundreds of widows splashed coloured powders and played with water pistols filled with coloured water. Showers of flower petals filled the air.

As loud music blasted, the younger women jostled with each other as they played with the colours.

For dozens of older women, years of social conditioning proved hard to break. They applied only tiny dots of colour to each other’s foreheads.

“Their participation in Holi symbolises a break from tradition, which forbids a widow from wearing a coloured sari, among many other things,” said Bindeshwar Pathak, the head of Sulabh International.

Sulabh was asked to oversee the lives of widows of the city by India’s Supreme Court, following news reports of the widows being forced to beg for food and go into prostitution.

President puts nation in Phagwah mood

––with spirited chowtal session at State House PRESIDENT David Granger last evening joined members of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangha for a Chowtal session on the lawns of State House.

Chowtal is a genre of folk music which originated from the Bhojpuri Region of Northern India and has been preserved for over 178 years in Guyana.

In brief remarks after a spirited round of Chowtal singing, President Granger said the festivities associated with the festival of Holi are an expression of a culture that is part of the Guyanese experience, which started to flourish here after the country gained Independence.

He explained that these festivals contribute to national unity, in that they help citizens to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of the country’s diverse cultural mosaic.

The President, however, pointed out that most of the festivities are confined to the coastland, and urged the religious groups to visit riverine and hinterland communities and host some of these cultural activities there, so that people would get a better understanding of the Guyanese society.

“The fact that you have been able to preserve this tradition and this custom and still find joy in it, and other people can find joy in it, shows the power of culture; the power of retention of these norms,” President Granger said.

He also said the vibrant colours and fun associated with Phagwah, which heralds the beginning of spring, make it one of the most joyous festivals in Guyana. The festival itself, he said, encompasses everything about regeneration and rebirth.

Speaking about the high level of religious tolerance that exists in Guyana, the President said it is important for all citizens to appreciate each other’s faiths and roots so as to better appreciate themselves.

“We are not entitled to be exclusively hateful of other religions. We must be tolerant, because other religions may have truths which we ourselves may not be able to discover…

“All of our religions teach compassion; and when we lose that compassion, when we lose that love for fellow Man and woman, we take a dangerous road…. We see what is happening in countries where there is hatred,” President Granger said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ravi Dev, also a member of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangha, said that a strong, all-embracing cultural policy is needed to bring together Guyana’s six peoples and move the nation forward.

Exposure costs him $10,000 A MINIBUS conductor was yesterday fined $10,000 by city magistrate Dylon Bess after he was found guilty of indecent exposure.

Sixty–four-year-old Keith Kendall pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on March 16, 2016, at Brickdam and Cornhill Street, Georgetown, in a public way and in view of the public, he exposed himself in an indecent manner to Michelle Hughes.

He was also charged with using abusive language towards the virtual complainant, but he pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Cow without ‘brand’ had no rightful owner

BECAUSE A. Persaud, a cattle dealer of Leonora, West Coast, Demerara, claimed a cow that was not branded as his property, a charge of larceny against Selwyn Fontonelle was dismissed.

Magistrate Liverpool dismissed the charge last Monday, during the trial of Fontonelle, after Persaud admitted under cross-examination by defence counsel J.M.F. Coddett that he never sought to get a brand for his animal.

Fontonelle was freed after Persaud failed to properly identify the cow as his property.

De Kinderen driver dies in crash INVESTIGATIONS are being conducted into a fatal accident that occurred on the Le Destin Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, on Monday at about 23:30hrs.

Thirty-year-old taxi driver Derron Elexey, known as ‘Spice’, of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, lost his life when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed after colliding with another vehicle he was attempting to overtake, as per the police report.

Elexey was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Dead: Derron Elexey Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was a former minibus conductor before working as a taxi driver on the Parika/Vreed-en-Hoop route.

Delivery man shot, robbed of CG bike FAST-FOOD restaurant deliveryman Satyhatram Karran has been hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his left hand, the result of a robbery on Monday night in Lamaha Gardens, here in the city.

A police release detailed that at about 21:20hrs on Monday, Karran, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was making a delivery in Lamaha Gardens when a man armed with a gun confronted him. The perpetrator shot Karran to his left hand before taking away his CG motor cycle and escaping.

Jailed again for armed robbery NICO Layne, currently serving a 58-month sentence for armed robbery, was yesterday sentenced to one year and three months’ imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, after she found him guilty of a similar offence.

Layne, of 59 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was convicted of committing a knife-point robbery on Ivelaw Hartman, during which he relieved Hartman of his cell phone and $19,000 cash, all totalling $30,400.

Yesterday, during summing up of the evidence, the Magistrate told the court that she had considered the evidence led by witnesses for the prosecution, led by Police Inspector Neville Jeffers. According to the magistrate, Layne had told the court that he could not recall where he was on the day in question, and that he did not rob anyone.

Magistrate McLennan said she disbelieved Layne’s story, and that he had premeditated and planned the robbery. She took into consideration the time the convict had spent on remand pending trial before imposing the prison term.

Layne’s new prison sentence will run concurrently with the sentence he is now serving.

Layne was, last November, convicted by City Magistrate Judy Latchman after he had been found guilty of robbing at gunpoint taxi driver Shafeik Mohamed of his Digicel phone valued $39,000 and cash worth $26,000 on May 6.

Court facts reveal that on the day in question, at about 17:05hrs, Mohamed was driving along Parade Street, Kingston when he was stopped by Layne and another man, who inquired whether he was working and subsequently boarded the vehicle.

Layne sat in the back seat while his accomplice sat in the front passenger’s seat as they requested that Mohamed take them to a certain location. On arrival at the location, Layne and his partner pointed a knife and gun at the taxi driver and demanded that he hand over his valuables. They then made their escape.

A report was made at the East La Penitence Police Station, and investigations carried out led to Layne’s arrest.

Five on bail for attempted ‘break-and-enter’ CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday placed five men on $25,000 bail each after they appeared before her jointly charged with attempting to break into the building housing an insurance company.

Steve Singh, 23, of Yarrow Dam, East Ruimveldt; Leonard Allicock, 53, of James Street, Albouystown; Trevor James, 38, of Durban Street, Lodge; Clinton Kissoon, 47, of William Street, Kitty; and 34-year-old handyman Torrel Timmerman of Albouystown all denied the charge when it was read to them.

Particulars of the charge allege that on March 20, at Brickdam, the five men attempted to break into the MP Insurance and Brokerage Company.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers, made no objection to bail since nothing from the firm was missing, therefore bail was granted and the men were ordered to return to court on April 14.

Brazilian refused bail on guns, ammo charge A BRAZILIAN national was on Tuesday refused bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, charged with unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

It is alleged that on March 19, at Eyelash Backdam, Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD), Sebastiad DeOlivera Moura had a 9mm pistol and twelve live rounds of matching ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.

With the help of an interpreter, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Defence lawyer Rahamat explained to the court that her client has operated a shop in the Port Kaituma area for the past six years and has a $20M business Brazilian national Sebastiad operation in Guyana.

DeOlivera Moura She further pointed out that because of his strong financial ties to this country, Moura did not pose a flight risk.

According to the lawyer, on the day in question, police went to her client’s shop and conducted a search.

“The gun and the ammunition were found on a counter top, and not in Moura’s possession,” Rahamat said as she told the court that multiple persons would enter the shop.

The prosecutor told the court that Moura speaks fluent English, and even admitted to police that he was the owner of the gun. He contended that the defendant was only tricking the court.

Moura was remanded to prison until May 2. He will make his next appearance at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

Chopping incident at Stabroek Police Outpost Shirley Thomas THIRTY-NINE-year-old shopkeeper Mark Rodney, of Section “D” South Turkeyen, in South Sophia, is currently warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital, nursing severe chop wounds about the body after being viciously attacked by a man outside the Stabroek Police Outpost on Monday night.

Rodney, who vends on Commerce Street Georgetown, was late yesterday in theatre undergoing an operation. Relatives recall that, moments before the chopping incident, Mark and his assailant’s mother had turned up at the Police Outpost, each claiming that the other had verbally abused them.

As Rodney was exiting the Stabroek Police Outpost, a man, said to be the woman’s son, allegedly pounced on him at the foot of the stairs and started chopping him. He sustained several wounds to the head, on both hands, and to the fingers. Persons who claimed they witnessed the attack said that when the man began to chop Rodney, two young male police ranks on duty in the outpost panicked and ‘dived for cover’, retreating deeper into the building; but as the victim began crying out for help, another policeman – a plain clothes rank -- fired three warning shots in the air, at which point the knife-wielding man ran away.

The plainclothes cop hotly pursued Rodney’s assailant, apprehended him and took him to a police station.

Police investigations are continuing.

Golden Jaguars roar to 7-0 win over Anguilla

By Rawle Toney GUYANA began their quest for Caribbean Football Union (CFU) supremacy in a dominant fashion, hammering Anguilla 7-0 last evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

It was the first Group 5 CFU Caribbean Cup match and playing against the team that inflicted on them their largest margin of defeat (14-0), Anguilla looked hapless against the Golden Jaguars who from the sound of referee Sandy Vasquez’s first whistle stood out as the superior team.

Dwight Peters, who netted two of Guyana’s goals, opened his account just 11 minutes into the contest when he casually found the net from point-blank range when he timed nicely a through-ball from Vurlon Mills.

Three minutes later, Christopher Nurse made it 2-0, scoring a header from a corner taken by Samuel Cox. Things were never in the Anguillans’ favour. In fact, the game was as if Guyana were playing by themselves.

Neil Danns was sensational with the ball, creating the bulk of Guyana’s play and his magic on the pitch brought sporadic cheers from the little over 1 000 supporters in the stands.

Danns’ work resulted in Eon Alleyne serving Peters with a sweet lob, which the Alpha United forward headed home, much to the delight of the very partisan crowd.

Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson refused to be left out of the goal hunt, scoring just at the end of the first half as Guyana took a 5-0 lead at the close.

Things did not improve for Anguilla, who didn’t get a shot on goal in the first half. The visitors’ nightmare continued when Vurlon Mills’ right-footed volley from just inside the penalty area pushed the score to 6-0.

Head coach Jamaal Shabazz made the first of three substitutes when he replaced Mills with UK-based Marcel Barrington.

It didn’t take long for the Englishman to get his first international goal, scoring on a rebound after Devon Millington’s rocket was spilled by Anguilla custodian Kasem Thompson to put Guyana up 7-0.

The Bolton Wanderers midfield maestro made his way off the pitch to a standing ovation as he was replaced by Millington.

The second half was no different from the first.

Anguilla never got off a shot and Guyana salvaged an important opening win.

The competition will take place during officially-sanctioned FIFA international match periods, giving member associations the opportunity to select their best possible teams.

Round two of the Championship is scheduled for May and Round three in October. The 5th Place playoff will take place in November and the final in May 2017. The top four teams will qualify for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Guyana, after last night’s engagement, will travel to Puerto Rico for their second Group 5 match on March 29.

Beckenbauer among six being investigated over 2006 World Cup

GUYANESE boxing treasurer Cliff Anderson lost a close eight-round decision to Tony Lombard on March 22, 1949. The fight was held in the Royal Albert Hall in London, England and was the fifth that year for the Guyanese featherweight.

Anderson was born Clifford Matthew Anderson on October 22, 1921 and started his professional career 18 years later. He would have his first seven fights at home before switching to the United Kingdom.

On November 3, 1947, was disqualified in round seven of a scheduled 10-round fight against Englishman Hat Bagwell. Anderson was found guilty on not “trying” during the contest, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Perfect New Zealand go through to World T20 semis MOHALI, India (Reuters) - New Zealand became the first team to book a spot in the World Twenty20 semi-finals after opener Martin Guptill smashed his 10th fifty in the game’s shortest format to set up a 22-run win against Pakistan in their Super10 stage match yesterday.

The right-handed Guptill hit 10 fours and three sixes in his 48-ball 80, sharing an opening stand of 62 with captain Kane Williamson, after an unchanged New Zealand won the toss on a green-tinged surface at Mohali to post 180-5.

Kenya unlikely to beat April WADA deadline

ELDORET, Kenya - Kenya is unlikely to beat the April 5 deadline set by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to put in place laws needed to make it “code-compliant”, a Kenyan legislator who is playing a key role in the process said yesterday.

Kenya faces the threat of being ruled non-compliant with the WADA code and, although that could eventually lead to sanctions, the IAAF said this month that it is highly unlikely the distance running powerhouse would be suspended from this year’s Olympic Games.

Wesley Korir, who has drafted a bill proscribing doping in the east African nation which has been hit by a wave of drug transgressions, said Kenyan authorities may seek an extension to the deadline to be able to complete the legislative process.

“The Bill has not been brought to Parliament as we are speaking and even if it is brought today, we cannot complete the process in two days because we shall be going on recess on Friday and returning on April 6,” Korir told Reuters in this North Rift Valley town, a centre of excellence for distance running, yesterday.

Korir, who won the Boston marathon in 2012, said Parliament’s Committee for Labour, Social Welfare and Sports had summoned the Minister for Sport last week to impress upon him the importance of the process.

“We also wanted to discuss how to merge the two

Olympic legend Kipchoge Keino bills, but he did not show up,” said Korir, a Member of Parliament for Cherangany Constituency in the North Rift, said before boarding a plane to the capital.

“I am requesting the President (Uhuru Kenyatta) to intervene in this matter to save the future of the youths of this country.

These people (Ministry of Sport) don’t seem to care about the future of our youth,” Keino, winner of gold medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, said.

ADAK CEO Japhter Rugut said last week the Bill was ready and was only awaiting ratification of a few aspects by WADA. Kenya failed to meet the first deadline of February 11 to prove it was doing enough to tackle doping.

About 40 Kenyan athletes have failed drugs tests in recent years. The country has set up its own national anti-doping agency and WADA said on February 11 it had put Kenya on probation, adding that there was still a lot of work to do.

In a closely contested match, Eric Williams’ 86th minute stunner was the separator between the two sides. Herstelling enjoyed the better run and could have easily won the match by about five goals but kept missing chance after chance.

In the opening match Grove had to dig deep to pull off a win against the determined Soesdyke Falcons. Denzil Crawford, who hammered in a brace, had given Grove the lead in the 7th minute but the advantage was short-lived, as Soesdyke responded in the 14th minute through the first of two goals from Alvin Adams.

The first half ended 1-1 as pressure continued to mount on defending champions Grove. The home team finally found the goahead goal in the 62nd minute that was headed home by Lloyd Matthews.

For a moment it seemed that that second goal was enough to secure full points for Grove but, with three minutes to full time, Adams fired in the equaliser for Soesdyke.

With one minute to the full 90 minutes, Soesdyke buckled under pressure and scored against themselves - Delwin Boston being the culprit.

Grove kept on applying the pressure and secured their fourth goal. Crawford put the icing on the cake in the fourth minute of added time, 90+4.

Mekdeci made light work of opposition to win Category A BENJAMIN Mekdeci made light work of his opposition to win Category A of the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Kraft Toucan Industries/DIGICEL-sponsored Junior Skill Level tournament which concluded last Sunday at the Georgetown Club courts.

Playing his final game of the one-week tournament, Mekdeci, who lost a single game in the entire tournament, defeated Alec Melville in straight games 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 to be crowned champion in category ‘A’.

The other two matches contested in Category A on the final day were much closer battles as Larissa Wiltshire had to call on all her reserves to secure a hardfought 3-1 win against Taylor Fernandes. GLTA strengthens club tennis through interclub competition THE Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) has made progress in strengthening club tennis through this year’s interclub competitions, which followed the Rebel Tennis Club’s successful tournament.

Interclub featured competitions between five clubs that formed six teams.

Sheltez Tennis Club entered two teams while the other clubs Rebel, Non Pareil, La Resouvenir and Roraima Tennis clubs entered one team each.

According to a release, the match format is best of 17 games and a round-robin format which means all clubs will face each other to determine the best club.

FORMER shifter-kart driver Stepfan Jeffrey made a successful re-entry to motor racing, finishing on the podium twice in last Sunday’s first National Race of Champions of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club.

The former shifter kart competitor said, “We still managed to bring home a second and a third which I intend

“For now my interests will be definitely local, want to develop the car properly before I hit the Caribbean scene.

WICB has plans to rekindle fast-bowling - Pybus

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) - The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) says it wants to stage a series of fast bowling camps as part of a plan to rekindle an area of the game that has been struggling in recent years.

WICB Director of Cricket Richard Pybus made the announcement at the conclusion of the ten-round Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional four-day Tournament on Monday.

The WICB is pondering the introduction of an off-season training programme targeting fast bowlers after spinners dominated the just ended four-day tournament.

“We are prioritising and looking at some camps for our fast bowlers possibly some measures off season to prioritise fast-bowling in the four-day competition,” said Pybus in an interview

with WICB media.

“This is going to be central to us getting that back at the heart of West Indies cricket again”.

Spinners featured prominently during the tournament including the top wicket- taker, Jamaican spinner Nikita Miller who had 65 scalps in nine matches.

“The competition has been still dominated too

much by the spin bowlers,” said the WICB Director of cricket.

“That is something that we will have to seriously address during the off-season to make sure that we are prioritising the fast bowlers.”

“I think something which is exceptionally positive is the quality of the batting. We are getting a consistency in the scoring,” said Pybus.

“We got a core group of young players who have put their hand up all the way through the competition. We

are getting consistent with hundreds being scored. Volume of hundreds and volume of runs which I think is very positive”.

Guyana Jaguars were crowned champions of the R4-Day for the second straight year.

They finished with 149 points – seven clear of nearest rivals Barbados Pride – to regain the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy, symbol of regional first-class supremacy.

“The first season of the PCL was very rushed and the systems we wanted to put in place to be able to support it were not where we wanted them to be,” he said.

“So this year is closer to where I would like to see the system in terms of providing support to the players and the structure of the season regarding the off-season programmes for the players.”

TRINIDAD and Tobago Red Force coach Gus Logie has been highly critical of the team’s performance in the final round of the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) on Monday.

Djokovic clarifies comments amid backlash WORLD number one Novak Djokovic has apologised for suggesting men deserve more prize money than women, with the 11-time grand-slam champion insisting he wants fairer pay for all.

Djokovic took to social media to clarify comments that have disappointed some on the WTA Tour.

Djokovic sparked outrage among some on the WTA Tour, namely world number one Serena Williams, after claiming men should “fight for more because the stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men’s tennis matches”.

His comments followed those of former BNP Paribas Open chief executive and tournament director Raymond Moore, who started the row after he claimed NOVAK DJOKOVIC females “ride on the coattails of the men.”

With 21-time grand-slam winner Williams left disappointed by Djokovic, the Serb then took to his official Facebook page to clarify his comments, which he felt were not articulated well.

“I typically use this page to share my excitement with you, especially after big wins. But this time I had to take a few deep breaths before addressing you,” Djokovic wrote.

“As you may have seen, I was asked to comment on a controversy that wasn’t of my making. Euphoria and adrenalin after the win on Sunday got the best of me and I’ve made some comments that are not the best articulation of my view, and I would like to clarify them.

“As you all know, I care deeply about the future of the game and all of the players. Tennis helped me so much in my life and being where I am today, I felt the need to speak about the fairer and better distribution of funds across the board - this was meant for both men and women. We all have to fight for what we deserve.

This was never meant to be made into a fight between genders and differences in pay, but in the way all players are rewarded for their play and effort.

“Tennis is a sport that I love and that gave me the opportunity to help others who still have a long way to go to achieve their dreams. This was my view all along and I want to apologise to anyone who has taken this the wrong way.” (Spoetsmax.com)

CARIFTA Games team departs for Grenada

By Tamica Garnett THE Guyana 2016 CARIFTA Games team of 15 athletes and three officials left these shores early yesterday morning for Grenada, ahead of representing the Golden Arrowhead Guyana at the esteemed meet which will run from March 26 to 28.

The team of seven girls and eight boys, consists of sprint star Kenisha Phillips, Avon Samuels, Claudrice McKoy, and Chantoba Bright in the Girls’ Under-18 category; Andrea Foster, Natricia Hooper and Jevina Sampson in the Girls’ Under-20; Samuel Lynch, Jeremy Garrett, Daniel Williams, and Tyrell Peters in the Boys’ Under-18; and Matthew McKenzie, Odwin Tudor, and Compton Caesar in the Boys’ Under-20 category.

Some 26 countries will be taking part in CARIFTA Games this weekend. It will be the second time in 16 years the Games will be staged in Grenada That country hosted the regional event in 2000 but could not do so in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan (September, 2004) which resulted in the relocation to Tobago.
