SEVERAL schemes on the East Bank of Demerara are undergoing infrastructural works for over 5,000 low , moderate and middle-income residential and industrial/commercial lots that cover about 1,700 acres of land

The team first visited Block 1 Great Diamond , where over 1,100 house lots have been allocated Minister Croal emphasised the strategic location of that area , as it is in close proximity to the Eccles to Great Diamond Highway, which, upon
completion , will provide easier navigation between the East Bank of Demerara and Georgetown Meanwhile, for Block 7 Great Diamond (approx 750 house lots) and Block 11 Golden Grove (approx 650 house lots), which are situated adjacently, Minister Croal said that the future alignment for the Ogle bypass road will be nearby At Block 13 Golden Grove , the Minister stated persons who were allocated Block 18 Golden Grove will now be occupying this area
He explained that the low-lying land at Block 18 posed several challenges, resulting in the delay of infrastructural works Works at Block 13 are currently progressing, and allottees will soon be able to access the land to construct their houses, while Block 18 is now repurposed into an industrial zone Minister Croal expressed, “when we’ve examined the two lands, we think this is a better land This is much more suitable for the residents for that allocation, and what we ’ ve done is rede -
First Lady, Chinese Embassy facilitate vulnerable children’s medical outreach
–– over 140 receive care
FIRST Lady Arya Ali, along with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China organised a medical outreach on Wednesday to provide free medical care for children in Orphanages and Homes across Guyana
At State House , 142 children from ten Homes and Orphanages across the country were provided care, including blood pressure testing and lung and heart examinations
First Lady Ali briefly spoke at the event, saying that her Adopt an Orphanage initiative has received significant support from private sector and other organisations since its launch some years ago
The Embassy of China , which has always supported the initiatives of the Office of the First Lady, provided medical assistance to children in need on Wednes-
day by sending 16 medical professionals, including 14 doctors, to the area
“
When I launched the Adopt an Orphanage initiative two years ago , I mentioned that we want to ensure that we were providing holistic support to our children in institutional care, and to do so in a sustainable way,” the First Lady said
She emphasised that children in institutional care require greater medical care and attention for a number of reasons, and as such, through her Office, she was happy to extend such a service to the group

Construction is also tak-
ing place at Golden Grove’s Block 15 and 17
According to Minister Croal, land allocations along the East Bank Demerara corridor in Region Four have been depleted, so the emphasis will shift to allocations in the East Coast Demerara schemes
The scale of ongoing construction works across the country was emphasised by Minister Croal , which amounts to approximately $ 64 billion and includes the construction of major highways.

Mahdia residents engaged on developmental projects
MAHDIA residents in Region Eight had a discussion with Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai and Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Anand Persaud about infrastructure, land, and garbage disposal.
Speaking at the Mahdia Secondary School, Minister Sukhai, while noting the town’s large size highlighted that each area requires a different level of development.
“The people living in this township must always benefit, and with that, issues and challenges will always be resolved by government,” Minister Sukhai assured.
As it relates to roads, the minister said engineers will visit the town to conduct as-
sessments, and those projects will be catered for in the next budget.
She informed residents that the town council will also be inviting the Environmental Protection Agency shortly to discuss and identify a plot of land for a dump site.
“The development will not only be prioritised for the central area but rather, it will have an impactful result across the township,” the Amerindian Affairs minister pointed out.
Meanwhile, Minister Persaud said government will be supporting the town council to ensure that major works get underway.
“I want to assure you that much more development is going to come to Mahdia and
the villages in Region Eight, to kick start the works of the Mayor and City Council,” Minister Persaud assured. He encouraged both adults and children to take their education seriously so that they can take up jobs in the various sectors.
“Billions of dollars are being spent in the education sector, in the health sector, in housing and water. We have crafted a plan for this country and its people, and every day we are executing these plans,” the minister said.

Constructing a brighter future
IN a society where progress is measured not only by economic growth but also by the well-being of its citizens, the government’s initiative to “house the nation” stands as a remarkable testament to the commitment of ensuring equitable opportunities, and uplifting the lives of its citizens.
The construction of core homes for low-income earners, and the availability of land and houses across all income brackets exemplify a monumental stride towards a more inclusive and prosperous future
Housing is not merely a roof over one’s head; it is the cornerstone upon which individual lives are built, families are nurtured, and communities flourish Beyond the physical structure, a house represents security, stability, and dignity
It fosters a sense of belonging and identity, providing a space where dreams are dreamed, aspirations are nurtured, and the next generation is raised. A house is more than a place to reside; it is the foundation for education, health, and economic progress
For low-income earners, the realisation of owning a home can break the cycle of poverty, and instill a renewed sense of hope
Evidence of the benefits of a house is
the story of 45-year-old Sonia Thomas, a mother five who was among some of the most recent beneficiaries of core homes from the government
It was reported that for this mother of five, life was not sunshine and rainbows, but she demonstrated that through perseverance, no matter how difficult the road, one should not give up, but keep working towards his/ her goals
Forced to take up residence in a deplorable unit that was riddled with holes, Thomas told this publication that she is now happy to give her grandson, kids, and even herself a proper home to live in
“I’m feeling overwhelmed, overjoyed and happy, not just for me but for my kids,” the mother of five said
Thomas, although unable to contain her tears, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Housing and Water, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP).
While a core home costs $4.4 million, the beneficiary will only pay $100,000, and according to the mother of five, her eldest sons were the ones who pooled together the money to ensure that she got the home
Affordable core homes empower families to escape the rent trap, and redirect their hard-earned income towards other essential needs such as education, healthcare, and skill development Moreover, stable housing reduces stress and anxiety , enabling individuals to focus on personal growth, and contributing positively to society
However, the initiative does not stop at catering solely to the economically challenged The availability of land and housing options across all income brackets promotes social cohesion and diversity , creating neighbourhoods that reflect the rich tapestry of society
When people from varying backgrounds and income levels reside, side by side, there emerges a dynamic and inclusive environment where cultural exchange, empathy, and understanding thrive This not only enhances community bonds, but also contributes to a vibrant economy by fostering collaboration and innovation
The benefits of a house extend beyond the individual and family unit to encompass the broader national landscape
Adequate housing stimulates economic activity through the construction industry, generating jobs and bolstering local econ-
omies
Increased home ownership cultivates a sense of pride in one’s community, leading to the establishment of well - maintained neighborhoods and improved urban aesthetics Additionally, as individuals invest in their properties, the housing sector becomes a catalyst for personal wealth accumulation, which, in turn, can drive broader economic prosperity
Housing plays a pivotal role in sustainable urban development By providing well-designed, energy-efficient homes, the government contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and promoting responsible resource consumption As urbanization continues to reshape our societies, well-planned housing initiatives pave the way for a greener, more environmentally conscious future By constructing core homes for low-income earners, and offering housing options for all income brackets, the government is constructing a brighter future, where every citizen has a chance to thrive, contribute, and lead a life of dignity.
This commitment to housing for all will, undoubtedly, create a nation that is stronger, more cohesive, and poised for enduring success
Death opens a floodgate of memories
Dear Editor,
OVER the past few weeks, Guyana lost some famous sons of the soil, namely, Ashton Chase , Dr . Roger Luncheon and Justice James Patterson.
Each scholarly gentleman was distinguished for different commendations and would be remembered for various reasons and challenging issues.
Guyanese of different generations , in particular, the elderly, will pause on a memory lane reflective of plaudits for compliments and criticisms They certainly significantly contributed to the composition of Guyana’s history
Senior Counsel Ashton Chase passed away on July 10 at the age of 96 He exemplified his character in the arenas of politics, law and labour, having identified himself with the PPP, the court house and NAACIE
President, Dr Irfaan Ali paid a glowing tribute : “ His death represents an incalculable loss to our nation His name and contributions will forever be etched in our country’s political, labour and legal
history. He made an exceptional contribution to Guyana’s nationalist struggle and political history and was the last surviving member of the Political Affairs Committee established in 1946 He was among our finest legal minds and was a pillar of our country’s early trade union activism, authoring the most authoritative work on our trade union history.”
General Secretary of the PPP/C, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo added : “ Our country owes an eternal debt of gratitude to this outstanding son of the soil Guyana has lost an amazing human being.”
Dr Roger Luncheon departed this earth on August 2 at the age of 74 His prominence prevailed in the fields of medicine and politics , having served as a medical doctor and as Head of the Presidential Secretariat for the PPP / C Government and Cabinet Secretary for not one but five Presidents of Guyana.
President Dr Ali was loud in his praise: “It is a painful and deep-wounded loss for the Government and Party He offered me unflinching support throughout my political career, both within the PPP
and in public life. This man has shaped me in many ways and placed tremendous trust and confidence in me Onward fearless warrior and pure nationalist, your work is done but, the product of your labour will live on forever.”
Vice President Jagdeo described him as: “A true son of the soil who helped to shape the lives of many Dr Luncheon left a rich legacy of true commitment to service, patriotism, and a deep sense of national pride and hard work for the people of Guyana.”
More recently, Justice (Ret’d) James Patterson waved a final goodbye to all on the August 13 at the age of 89, just short of two weeks from being 90 Having served the courts of Guyana and Grenada, he was a former Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission To date , only the Chairman for CRG has paid a public tribute.
Patterson’s death opens a floodgate of memories, reminiscing the “mother of all elections,” the Guyana General and Regional Elections held on March 2, 2020, the year the “sanctimonious gangster”
and his cabals, a band of rebels, tried to hijack the election and install an unelected president!
At least five occasions were noted but their unsuccessful attempts were a breeding ground for denigration, distrust and division within the PNC
It was the turning point for the PNC when the local, regional and international communities refused to accept the PNC’s daring and glaring attempts to rig the result of the election The US played a major role in the restoration of democracy in Guyana, both in 1992 and again in 2020 The legal and legitimate winner both times, the PPP/C, was then able to govern the country after being duly elected by the people
The winner for Election 2020 was the determining factor as to who will manage the revenue generated from the oil sector to propel Guyana to world fame, economic development and prosperity
The stake was high and the PNC knew that they couldn’t win in a

A banker is saying this about Guyana? Really!
AWARD winning Mashramani costume designer in 1979 and the 1980s, Mr. Bernard Ramsey , writes often in the letter section of the newspapers.
Here is what he wrote on August 12, 2023 in the Stabroek News: “I was recently interviewed by a well-known past Kaieteur News contributor and feature writer.”
Mr Ramsey was referring to me All he had to pen were the following words: “I was recently interviewed by Freddie Kissoon.” Mr Ramsey has a saying that he includes in most of his letters It goes like this: “Nothing prepares you for Guyana.” Each time, he uses that phrase, he applies it in a negative way in relation to the government
But the saying is applicable to all and sundry in Guyana including Mr Ramsey himself. Couldn’t Mr. Ramsey simply say, “I was interviewed by Freddie Kissoon?” When I saw Mr Ramsey’s failure to mention my name, I said to myself - “Nothing prepares you for Guyana” Let’s continue to examine, Mr Ramsey’s favourite exclamation and see to whom the words are applicable
I quote Mr Ramsey again from a letter he wrote on July 14: “A good friend and prominent Guyanese banker who has lived in Canada and the USA and worked extensively in the Caribbean, and who currently works here, recently remarked that ‘Nothing can prepare you for Guyana.’ That statement resonated with me for days.” My first reaction on reading what the banker uttered was: “Look who is talking.” Was Mr Ramsey serious when he transmitted that banker’s observation?
I don ’ t think Mr Ramsey knows this country If he did, he would not have cited
that banker The commercial banks in this country have become a symbol of harassment to Guyanese across class structure.
From labourer to white collar worker to wealthy citizen to Cabinet minister, the commercial banks are a source of nightmares
Commercial banks are competing hectically with a section of the Joint Services, a popular telecommunications company, and the source of “light” in Guyana for the number one spot for source of frustration
GO-Invest head, Dr Peter Ramsaroop, was the guest recently on the Freddie Kissoon- Gildarie Show and, in praise of Guyana’s future, he said the only thing left to fix is the banking system
Former head of the Guyana Manufacturing Association, Mr Timothy Tucker, on the same programme just weeks before Dr Ramsaroop’s appearance was acidic in his comments about mistreatment of Guyanese by the commercial banks
Mr Ramsey in that very letter of July 14 went on to criticise the government and observed that “Ministers and high officials drive big SUVs and live in fancy communities with fully air-conditioned homes.”
On the Freddie Kissoon-Gildarie Show, when Mr Ramsey was our guest, I pointed out that there are other people who live in far fancier houses than ministers He did not agree So I ask again, is he living in Guyana?
Now here is a challenge to Mr Ramsey I am betting him that the banker he referred to lives in a far more ostentatious ambience with far greater housing luxuries than government ministers
If he can prove to me that his banker

straight and clean fight and that they had to resort to the way Burnham taught them, i.e., to win by fraudulent means via wholesale rigging of the election
Back in 1985, the executive secretary of the Guyana Council of Churches, Mr Michael McCormack said: “The question of rigging is paramount You cannot have a discussion without this coming up Basically, everybody is just watching for the rig.”
The PNC prospered for 28 years through foul and not fair means But the PNC ’ s brain box were poor learners They lacked Burnham’s touch to drive home the final nail and ‘bamboozle’ everyone to claim the crown by deceit!
Granger’s partnership with Patterson raised eye brows Guyanese and their country became a laughing stock after the PNC argued that 33 is not the majority of 65, a simple deduction any primary school boy knows, except the brilliant PNC scholars, including Granger, Trotman and Williams!
No wonder the PNC led this country to bankruptcy not once but twice during their governance! Not surprisingly, the
PNC signed the most lop-sided oil contract in the world, thanks to their mathematical geniuses! What a shame! The judges at the CCJ refused to listen to the PNC ’ s mathematical hocus - pocus and mumbo - jumbo attempted presentation of dividing bodies and rejoining them to make a whole!
The CCJ upheld that the Motion of No Confidence moved in December 2018 was valid Charrandas was not the only person holding dual citizenship! That was the beginning of the end of another PNC era Granger’s selection of Patterson as GECOM’s chairman in 2019 was refused by the CCJ The election petition by the PNC was annulled by the CCJ The PNC members were sanctioned and asked to “step-aside.”
Has anyone sighted any more Russians or had a “bomb-scare” interruption?
The reliable , resourceful and resilient Freddie Kissoon reminds us of what a British writer quipped, “There have always been stupid people in the world and plenty of nasty people too But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid”.
Yours respectfully, Jai Lall.
friend dwells in a less fancy structure than the ministers, I will stop writing this column
Since Mr Ramsey found it wise to cite what his banker friend told him, then he must face up to the challenge If he can’t, he should cease sending letters to the press
Ministers work hard You have to be a poisonous bigot to deny that Generally, all over the world, ministers work from day to night In Guyana, our ministers travel incessantly, meeting the ordinary folks all over the 83,000 square miles of this country.
Ask that banker how many complaining customers he has ever spoken with Ask that banker how many ordinary people he meets in a year if he meets any at all.
I am stating my email address and cell phone number (fredkissoon @yahoo com and
614-5927). I will ask that banker to contact me I assure him on the woman I love more than life itself - my wife – that I will keep our conversation forever private Let him show me four things: He works harder than ministers; he lives in a modest dwelling; he tends to the complaints of ordinary customers and fourthly, he draws down a lower salary than ministers
I am saying he cannot and will not accept that challenge because his saying that “nothing prepares you for Guyana” applies to him with more force than the government officials he complained to Mr Ramsey about
I don’t mind the ordinary folks criticising the government, but not Mr. Big Fancy Banker Come on Mr Ramsey! Get to know your country’s sociology!
President Irfaan Ali: The obvious choice
Dear Editor,
THREE years have already elapsed into the first term of President, Dr. Irfaan Ali’s tenure as president.
His government has surpassed all targets which were set out to be accomplished prior to assuming office and it has fulfilled the promises which were made to Guyanese
This demonstrates the vibrancy , will and commitment of the government to alter the course of a sinking economy which was inherited in 2020
Undoubtedly , the People ’ s Progressive Party government has proven since its inception that it is a party for the people and President Ali has achieved substantial success as president because he is connected to the populace He has a well-defined mandate; his vision for our beloved Guyana is magnanimous and his love for people is unparalleled
He utilises his energy to bring peo-
ple together; not float around like the helpless, callous and oblivious few Every sector has been growing considerably and this has to be attributed to the governance which we have today
The status of this great country has risen and Guyanese are enjoying a better standard of life The future of our children is in good hands and there will be opportunities for all Guyana’s transformation is unimaginable and one more term of President Ali will create the paradise we all dream about
He stands miles above the political opposition and he is cementing his place in history as a man who genuinely works for the advancement of his people and his country
The community of Windsor Forest fully endorses President Ali’s bid for a second term in office

For persons living with disabilities, the minister emphasised the significance of providing assistive aids
As she explained : “ No such programme existed before, and coming into office in 2020, I was struck at how difficult it was for persons who lived with disabilities, especially those with mobility issues, to access these assistive aids.”
Taking into account this gap, the ministry acted swift-
ly to ensure access to essential aids such as wheelchairs, walkers , and white canes
Persons can now request these aids and have them delivered directly to their homes or communities
Additionally , the ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has developed a well-established referral pathway for persons to access free hearing aids
The government has taken a holistic approach to empower persons living with disabilities through development training, to improve their quality of life
These programmes include basic computer training, job access with speech (JAWS) for the visually impaired, garment construction, adult literacy, and numeracy
As a result, nearly 500 persons living with disabilities have received specialised training tailored to their unique needs
Additionally, to foster entrepreneurship and economic independence among persons
Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud interacting with a citizen living with disabilities , the government has established the Revolving Fund, specifically dedicated to supporting micro-enterprises initiated by these individuals
Meanwhile, in late 2021, an eye care programme was
launched to provide vision care to underserved communities and vulnerable citizens.
The initiative has already made a profound impact , with over 3,000 pairs of spectacles distributed to date
The government has also been actively involved in providing hampers, assisting with funeral expenses, and helping individuals affected by property damage , particularly due to fires

FlyAlways aircraft incident investigated, resolved
- Civil Aviation Authority
IN a swift response to ensure passenger safety, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) recently concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a "Pan-Pan" call issued by a FlyAlways aircraft.
The aviation community recognises a "Pan-Pan" call as an urgent communication indicating a non-life-threatening situation of distress or concern.
On August 14, 2023, a FlyAlways aircraft, with 44 passengers on board, took off from CJIA at 10:37 hours, en route to Bonaire International Airport.
Approximately 18 minutes after takeoff, at 10:55 hours, the aircraft's pilot alerted Air Traffic Controllers to an engine warning light indicating an oil pressure limit issue with the right engine. The crew urgently requested clearance to return to the
CJIA and also reported that they were in the process of shutting down the distressed engine.
At the time of the pilot's request, the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of 26,000 feet, with a fuel reserve of six hours. The swift response of the authorities allowed for a safe return to the CJIA, and the aircraft successfully landed at 11:23 hours without further incident.
Subsequent to the landing, necessary maintenance procedures were conducted to ensure the aircraft's airworthiness. With passenger and crew safety as a top priority,
the aircraft was deemed safe for flight after the required maintenance. It was then ferried to FlyAlways' home base in Suriname for further in-depth investigation into the specific issue that prompted the "PanPan" call.
Later in the day, at 16:28 hours, the aircraft departed from CJIA for its destination in Suriname, effectively marking the conclusion of the incident and its immediate aftermath.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority emphasised that the correct protocols were rigorously followed throughout the operation to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members on board. That incident served as a testament to the effective coordination between aviation professionals, ensuring that the necessary precautions and actions were

$294M Vigilance Magistrate’s Court commissioned
–– AG says gov’t committed to rolling out new, modernised courts

THE government ’ s commitment to maintaining law and order in the East Coast of Demerara is evident with the commissioning of the $ 294 million Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, especially given the area’s rapid transformation in all sectors
This is according to Attorney General ( AG ) and Minister of Legal Affairs , Anil Nandlall, on Wednesday, during the commissioning of the new facility
He said that his government recognises the need for a more modern and revolutionary justice system and it is committed to injecting the necessary investments in order to enhance it
In his feature remarks , the AG said : “ It [ the new court] demonstrates vividly the government ’ s commitment to investing heavily in the judicial system and
in the legal system of our country It demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that there is equal and ready access to justice right across the length and breadth of our country.”
The AG further announced that the newly-commissioned Vigilance Magistrate’s Court is one of several modernised facilities that the government is rolling out
Moreover, Mabaruma, Anna Regina , Cove and John , among others, will soon see the same
“So this certainly is not an isolated edifice and investment It is a continuous one …” he remarked
Reflecting on how the area and the court hold a special place in his heart , Nandlall said : “ I grew up a stone’s throw away from this location and I also hold Parliamentary and political responsibility for the East Coast of Demerara When
I began my legal career as a member of the practicing bar, I spent many weeks in this compound,” adding that the previous ancient building brought back memories.
From the traditional windows to the wooden floors and benches , he remarked that the new facility was a step in the right direction in seeing the East Coast Court becoming modernised
Meanwhile , Chancellor of the Judiciary , Yonette Cummings-Edwards, lauded the new court and said that the enhancement of the delivery of judiciary services was long overdue
She said: “This Vigilance Magistrate’s Court opening signifies, not only improved access to justice, but also the commitment and dedication of a team of judicial officers and staff to achieving that
end.”
From an ancient building that lacked space and proper facilities , the Chancellor could not help but reflect on how far the justice system had evolved
She said: “The residents of the East Coast starting from Spareendam all the way to Cove and John, this is your court.”
Moreover, Acting Chief Justice , Roxanne George , said that the introduction of the modern court comes at the right time, since massive developments are occurring on the East Coast corridor, such as new housing schemes
“ We appreciate the resources that the government provides to the judiciary, the third arm of the state, so that it can carry out its mandate of upholding the rule of law and
providing access to justice to all,” she stated
Referring to the newly - commissioned court as a ‘ baby ’ that is tech - savy and well - equipped , Acting Chief Magistrate , Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, stated that it demonstrates an innovative manner of enforcing justice
The new Vigilance Magistrate ’ s court houses two court rooms , a drug treatment department, domestic violence room and living quarters
The new court is part of the transformation of the justice sector in Guyana and is expected to serve the staff and people of the east coast more efficiently. The court also features a modern digital payment system for bail and other fees through GTT’s Mobile Money Guyana (MMG).

New NCN ‘Made in Guyana’ initiative creates meaningful marketing opportunities
11 other programmes also being rolled out
THE Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( GCCI ) has welcomed the launch of the National Communications Network (NCN)’s “Made in Guyana” television series , and congratulated the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) on being the first business to be showcased on the programme
In his address at the launch of the initiative at NAMILCO ’ s Headquarters on the East Bank of Demerara on Monday , GCCI President Kester Hutson commended NCN for this initiative, which, he said , provides meaningful marketing opportunities for businesses , while also filling a gap that currently exists in Guyana
Hutson commended the Chamber’s support for the programme , and its commitment to work along with the communications giants on this initiative
He said that the programme aligns with the Chamber ’ s current mandate of emphasising the importance of collaboration , and the pooling of resources to build Guyana in a very sustainable and meaningful manner
He also commended NAMILCO for being a company that continues to strive to maintain high standards “Made In Guyana” is a new TV programme by NCN that will be aired twice per month, featuring a different business on each episode.
The series will give a walk-through of how products are being made by each featured local business The first episode , which premiered on Monday, showcased how flour is made at NAMILCO
According to NCN ’ s Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) Michella
Abraham - Ali , the programme will highlight the hard work and dedication
of members of staff of the companies being featured, as well as the integrity of the items they produce , and the environmental conditions under which they are being manufactured among other information of note
She said that given the growth of the oil-and-gas sector, the concept of local content has become ever more popular, so they aim to ensure that in the journey to progress and prosperity, they leave no one behind “ That is essentially what we are doing in this series ; we are showcasing the well - known but also the not so known in Guyana businesses, their products , because each has a role to play in this fast - growing economy ,” Mrs. Abraham-Ali said.
According to NCN ’ s Marketing Manager Christine Gooding, the objective of the programme is to highlight and promote the innovation and entrepreneurship behind locally made products , and to broaden the imagination of other leaders and industry practitioners to the possibility of growth in Guyana
“
NCN sees this programme, one of many new productions from our side, as meeting the moment since Guyana’s manufacturing sector will expand considerably , owing , in part, to direct measures of
the President , Dr Irfaan Ali - led administration , and in equal part to the ingenuity of local business people,” Gooding said
She related that collaboration between NCN and the private sector is important “ Productions such as this one will not only be aired via NCN stream television stations , making the content viewable in multiple administrative regions across Guyana, but it will also be accessible through our Facebook , YouTube , and Tik Tok accounts posting hundreds of thousands of combined followers,” Gooding said
NCN ’ s production department will circle the country through programmes such as Studio Beats , which is already being aired; Eat Well Live
Well, a focus on nutrition and health, which is in the editing phase; and a reality-type television show, “The Next Broadcaster”. Made in Guyana is part of 12 new programmes being rolled out by NCN
“NCN will continue to deliver on its mandate to the Guyanese people, and as we do this, we welcome partners from the private sector as we grow these visions, episode by episode,” Gooding said
For Cordell McClure of
the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, it’s a pleasure to be able to participate in an initiative which seeks to promote and encourage local production
“You’re aware that the
government has clearly articulated the position on food security, and the fact that there has been a projection of a reduction of food imports by 25 per cent by 2025 And beyond the borders of Guyana, our president has been holding discussions with leaders from across the globe, ex-
ploring opportunities for local manufacturers and agro-processors to export produce to those countries, while also seeking investment,” he said
McClure said that this programme creates an opportunity for the production of local products to be attractively packaged and promoted across the nation.
“
This Made in Guyana initiative is laying the foundation for deeper interest and appreciation in local products, and this can have a multiplying effect on the economy, including greater employment,” he related
In the words of Nizam Hassan, Executive Director of the Guyana Manufacturing & Services Association (GMSA), any Facebook post or article promoting Made in Guyana is doing justice to local manufacturers.

GPHC, HERO celebrate successful surgical mission
THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has announced the successful completion of another surgical mission in partnership with the Health and Education Relief Organization (HERO).
Operation Hero, a longstanding partnership between GPHC and HERO, has once again demonstrated its commitment to delivering vital medical care to those in need.
During this recent mission, GPHC and HERO combined their expertise to perform eight paediatric orthopaedic surgeries, targetting lower extremity deformities in children. Additionally, 10 plastic surgeries were undertaken, primarily breast reduction procedures for women in need.
The surgical procedures have not only provided life-chang -
ing transformations for patients but also exemplified the dedication of both organisations towards enhancing the quality of life for those who need it most.
HERO’s support
extended beyond surgical procedures, as their skilled anaesthesia assistance proved instrumental in ensuring the safety and comfort of the patients throughout the operations. This collabora-
tion underscores the importance of teamwork and cross-border partnerships in delivering comprehensive medical care.
Since its inception in 2007, Operation Hero has facilitated
hundreds of surgeries for patients in dire need, significantly impacting their lives and well-being. The partnership has also enabled GPHC’s medical team to gain valuable hands-on experience, exposure to intricate cases, and access to advanced surgical materials and equipment. This dynamic exchange of knowledge and resources has contributed to enhancing the overall capabilities of GPHC’s medical professionals.
HERO, a US-based nonprofit organisation, was founded by Guyanese physicians in the United States who shared a common goal of giving back to their homeland. Their commitment to making a difference is evident through their biannual visits to Guyana, usually occurring in March and August. These visits encom -
pass not only surgical missions, but also educational and medical initiatives aimed at uplifting various communities.
While HERO’s medical and educational missions extend across different communities in Guyana, the surgical aspect of their efforts is primarily conducted at GPHC. This strategic focus allows for the concentration of expertise, resources, and facilities to maximise the impact of each surgical mission.
As Operation Hero continues to make a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals in Guyana, both organisations remain committed to upholding their shared vision of enhancing healthcare, medical education, and surgical practices for the benefit of the people of Guyana.

Pomona farmer found dead at Mashabo trail
GANESH ‘Krishna’ Ramcharran, 35, a farmer who was found dead along the Mashabo trail, Essequibo Coast, on Tuesday, allegedly lost control of his motorcycle, tumbled, and suffered injuries to his body.
The Ramcharran family of Pomona Public Road, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), is in a state of shock after they received the tragic news that the body of Ramcharran was found lying motionless at Gave Hill, Mashabo.
According to his mother Baitwattie Ramcharran, her son left home around 5:00 am Monday morning for work.
She said he is self-employed and would usually cut wood and burn charcoal for a living. The mother, in tears, said that Ramcharran was her only son and he would work
hard to maintain his family.
His father, Harrinarine Ramcharran, said that he received the news Tuesday afternoon and subsequently visited the scene.
He said nothing was wrong with the motorcycle and he had on his helmet, but when he took the helmet off he noticed his son’s neck broken.
“The helmet had blood,
the chainsaw was nearby and nothing wrong with the motorcycle, no marks of violence I really don’t know what happened” the father shared.
The family said they are eagerly awaiting a post-mortem examination. Ramcharran was a father of one and was described as a hard-working son. He was the only son of his parents.
Information revealed that Ganesh was the owner of motorcycle CL 5021 and would normally cul-
tivate a farm at Gave Hill, Mashabo.
On his way home around 4:00 PM, he fell off his motorcycle after supposedly losing control. His motorcycle was found on the trail, but his body was discovered six feet away and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital. The doctor examined him and declared him dead. The Suddie Mortuary is where his body currently is, awaiting a post mortem examination.

Gov’t delivers on promise to Linden agro-processors
- $23.6M facility commissioned at Watooka
A SECOND agro-processing facility was commissioned by Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, in Watooka, Linden (Region 10), less than two weeks after the
commissioning of a similar facility in Karaudarnau village in Region Nine.
The Ministry of Agriculture through the New Guyana Marketing Cor-
poration (New GMC) expended some $23.6 million to construct and outfit the facility providing much-needed agro-processing services to approximately 600 persons
in and around the region.
Minister Mustapha in his address at the commissioning noted that the government has made large sums of money available to fund initiatives to develop Guyana’s agro-processing sector.
He explained that while farmers are encouraged to produce more, value-added production will enable them to maximize profits and extend the shelf life of their commodities.
“The commissioning of this facility at Watooka clearly indicates the ongoing development in the agriculture sector. Our farmers are producing primary products and are selling them to middlemen. There is no value added. We sell our fruits and we are purchasing juices from overseas. So, at the ministry level, a decision was taken to develop these facilities because we have sufficient products to help our farmers get involved in value-added production. When we do this, our country is able to move to a higher level. We are not only focused on primary production. Now our farmers are having these facilities because this government is interested in development, especially in the agriculture sector,” he explained.
Minister Mustapha also said that over the last three years, approximately 300 new agro-processed products were introduced through collaboration and support from the New GMC.
He added that by the end of 2023, some 13 agro-processing facilities will be commissioned and put into operation to assist farmers in rural areas with
value-added production.
While noting that Guyana produces most of the food consumed locally, Minister Mustapha said that focus is being placed on increasing production in order to lower Guyana’s and the region’s food import bill.
“We, in Guyana, are very fortunate because we are producing 60% of the food we are consuming. But, as a government, we are not satisfied with only 60%. We are still importing a number of commodities that we can produce locally. A lot of effort and emphasis is being placed on ensuring farmers are able to produce more and have the necessary infrastructure and inputs to do so. We are also working at the level of CARICOM to lower the regional food import bill,” he added.
New GMC’s General Manager Teshawna Lall said that the establishment of the facility stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to bolster commercial agro-processing within the region. She added that the facility was constructed and outfitted to satisfy international standards, fortified with efficient technology to minimize wastage and spoilage.
The facility is said to have the capacity to produce in excess of 4,300 liters of sauces and seasonings monthly and is equipped with an array of machinery such as mixers, blenders, stoves, stainless steel containers, heavy-duty scales, and chillers. It also has the capacity to operate on a 24-hour base offering mechanized processes to allow for lower operational expenses.

Child Health Screening Programme launched in Region Two
By Indrawattie Natram
MINISTER of Health
Dr Frank Anthony on Friday launched the Child Health Screening Programme in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) at the Mainstay Health Centre in the Mainstay/Whyaka community.
The programme will guarantee that children undergo preventive check-ups to detect any condition at an early age.
“Every child will be screened at least once during nursery, primary education… some of you are aware that there may be a child in the classroom but not paying attention; but sometimes closer examinations and maybe that child won’t be able to see properly, so part of the programme we will be working with
the Ministry of Education to detect some of these issues” Dr Anthony said.
He stated that the programme offers measures that are appropriate for a child's age and enable the monitoring of their health. Children's eyes,
ears, mouth, and body will be examined as part of the services, according to Dr. Anthony. As soon as a condition is detected, appropriate care and attention can be given.
“This programme will do a lot of good things
for our children. We are starting it from the nursery level and by the end of the year we are hoping over 27,000 children at the nursery level will be screened,” Dr Anthony said.
According to Region-
al Health Officer Dr Ranjeev Singh, every child will have a chance to get a check-up before starting nursery school. He stated that the region will begin screening and he requested parents to assist.
Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit commended the Ministry of Health for implementing such programme in the school system. Oodit said that detecting a disease or condition in an early stage can ensure a healthier society. He therefore called on parents to support the programme and to work with the medical officers.
According to Dr. Farrah December, the Ministry of Health will be introducing several child and youth programmes, as she spoke on child health screening. Accord-
ing to her, children leaving the clinic at age five often do not have regular health check-ups. Until they reach adulthood, Dr December said the programme will keep a close eye on a child's health. It's an initiative for the well-being of children, involving the Ministries of Health and Education, as well as the Mount Sinai system, she said. The screening aims to identify any emerging alignments. The alignments may not exhibit any symptoms yet, but early detection is crucial for proper treatment, she said.
Attending the launch was Member of Parliament Yvonne Pearson, Prime Minister representative Arnold Adams and Regional Executive Officer Susannah Saywack.

Archer misses out on selection for world cup
(ESPNCRICINFO) - Jofra Archer has missed out on selection in England's World Cup squad after running out of time to prove his fitness and will only fly to India as a travelling reserve, barring "something miraculous" in his recovery from injury.
Archer was England's leading wicket-taker when they won the tournament four years ago and closed out their triumph in the final with a nerveless Super Over, but has not played since the IPL this year due to an elbow stress fracture.
Luke Wright, an England selector and Archer's former Sussex team-mate, said that England were "desperate" for him to be fit but that they were reluctant to "force him into playing" ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.
"There has got to be a duty of care with Jof," Wright said. "We know how desperate we all are to have him -- there's no doubt about that
-- but we've also got to get it right for him. He's been very unfortunate with these injuries… regarding the World Cup, unfortunately, we're just running out of time.
"He's not going to come round quite quick enough, especially for the first part of the World Cup. There is
a duty of care with him. We have to make sure that longterm, we get it right because we see him as a huge asset for a long time. As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately, we're just going to run out of time."
Speaking while working on the BBC's coverage of the Hundred, Archer said he would retain some hope of featuring in India: "I'm feeling alright, I'm a bit hopeful as well. Right now, I'm feeling OK and rehab and everything is going as planned. You just need a little bit of
luck and a little bit of hope."
England have picked six frontline seamers in their provisional 15-man squad -which can be tweaked until September 28 -- and anticipate a gruelling workload for their seamers, with nine group games scheduled in 37 days and flights required between venues across India.
Most of their first-choice fast bowlers have suffered injuries at some stage in the last two years and England hope that Archer would be available to play a part in the second half of the tournament in the event that one of them goes down again.
"I don't think we can, unfortunately, have him in the squad to start with," Wright said. "Best-case scenario for Jof really at the moment would probably be [that he is] available for the back-end of the tournament. That's best-case scenario, which obviously, in a squad of 15, is going to leave us quite light.
"The last thing we want to
do is really to put a massive time [limit] on him and try to push him and force him into playing before he does [feel ready]. We've got to get him right, first and foremost.
"But is there an opportunity or a place where potentially he could play at the back-end of a tournament, if all things go well and there was an injury? Yes, there's a potential chance. But obviously, a lot of things have still got to go right with this rehab before then.
"When you look at that squad, you cannot have a bowler that might not be available for the second half and definitely not for the first half. Unfortunately, we couldn't do it. If something miraculous happens with him, we have time to change things but I just don't see it happening. It is just coming too soon and we can't rush this decision on Jof this time."

Thompson-Herah hires MVP’s Osbourne to regain form
(Sportsmax) - In a bid to get back to her best, double Olympic sprint champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah, is now taking coaching orders from former MVP coach, Shanikie Osbourne.
According to a Radio Jamaica report, Thompson-Herah, who has been a shadow of her usual competitive self in recent times, engaged the temporary arrangement with Osbourne, after the National Senior Championships in July when she missed an individual lane for the upcoming World Athletic Championships.
However, she finished well enough to make the team to Budapest, Hungary, as part of the relay pool.
While the move may come as a surprise to many, Osbourne, who previously coached Papine High, explained that it is basically a continuation of what transpired during Thompson-Herah’s time at MVP.
“I have been working with her since we have been at MVP, so it’s similar stuff; so, I’m just working with her for now. Not sure if it is going to be permanent, but just working with her for now,” said Osbourne during the Radio Jamaica interview.
The coach pointed out that where the relationship goes after the World Championships is left solely up to Thompson-Herah, 31, who previously took orders from world renowned coach, Stephen Francis, before switching coaching duties to her

Williams gets wildcard for US open
(BBC) - Two-time champion Venus Williams is set to compete in a record-extending 24th US Open after being handed a wildcard for this month's Grand Slam event.
Williams, 43, made her main-draw debut at Flushing Meadows in 1997, going on to win the 2000 and 2001 titles.
The world number 533 will extend her own record of Open era singles appearances in New York.
Two-time finalist Caroline Wozniacki, who is making a comeback after retiring in 2020, is also among the wildcards.
Dane Wozniacki, 33, will play in her third tournament since returning to the WTA Tour earlier this month.
The US Open, which is the final major event of the season, starts on 28 August.
On Wednesday, Williams plays China's Zheng Qinwen in the second round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
The former world number one, who beat a top-20 player for the first time in four years with victory over Russia's
Veronika Kudermetova on Monday, will look to win back-to-back matches on the WTA Tour for the first time since the 2019 event in Cincinnati.
Williams could go on to meet Polish world number one Iga Swiatek, who continued her preparations for the defence of her US Open crown with a ruthless 6-1 6-0 win over American Danielle Collins.
American world number three Jessica Pegula also
reached the last 16 with a 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 6-3 win over Italy's Martina Trevisan.
Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic won 6-4 6-2 against Russia's Anastasia Popatova, while Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina also progressed by beating France's Varvara Gracheva.
In the men's singles, Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev moved into the last 16 with a 6-3 6-2 win over Italy's Lorenzo Musetti.
Medvedev, who claimed the title in 2019 before going on to reach the US Open final, faces Germany's Alexander Zverev next.

Stage for new Boxing Gym at Bayrock
Plans for the setting up of a new boxing gym in Linden went well last Saturday when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged ten exhibition bouts at the Mackenzie Car Park in Linden.
The Steve Ninvalle-led GBA brought a boxing ring to the venue since several of those pugilists are set to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships in Georgetown this weekend.
Linden has a rich history in boxing, especially at the
amateur level.
Over the years the town’s best gym ever, the Bauxite Bombers Boxing Gym, carved a name for itself, compliments of those outstanding pugilists from the Mining Town back in the 1970s and ‘80s.
In recent years, there were such gyms like the Pocket Rocket and Carryll’ Boxing Gyms, but boxers from the Linden area have been absent from competitions coordinated by the GBA for the past two years.
The GBA intends to correct this very soon.
Mr. Seon Bristol headed the GBA team to Linden last Saturday which included the GBA’s Technical Director, Terrence Poole, executive member, Daniel Patterson, and national coach, Lennox Daniels.
At the conclusion of the display by the young boxers, Bristol told Chronicle Sport,“The key (is) we did exactly what we set out to do and we accomplished everything. We planned the
work and we worked the plan and it’s been complete. I would have liked to have more registration of boxers.
He added, “This is a long-term plan (and) I am comfortable with the introduction that was made. So, with that, it is a work in progress. I am very satisfied all that was put together, all that was expected was done.”
Aspirant boxers are advised that they can visit the area at Bayrock, which is in close proximity with the newly laid synthetic track,
and get registered.
Registration is ongoing with Lance ‘Wild Line’ Easton among the co-ordinators.
“The fact that you may have about six weeks to the opening of that gym, it tells us that we will continue registration into that week and even after that, the gym registration never closes. They can go to the gym area at Barock and that is where on a daily basis registration will be done there,” emphasized the GBA official Bristol.
Technical Director Terrence Poole summed it up by saying, “We had ten bouts, nine would have been males and one female and the purpose of our exercise was achieved because it was to get Linden back on its footing in boxing and the encouragement was there where two Lindeners decided to take the ring and it is something that we had wanted, to see Linden back in the boxing arena.”

(ESPNCRICINFO) - An independent anti-corruption tribunal has found the former West Indies batter, Marlon Samuels, guilty of four offences under the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) anti-corruption code. Samuels, who was charged by the ICC in September 2021, was found guilty after he exercised his right to a hearing.
The tribunal will decide on a sanction after considering the submissions of each party.
The charges relate to the 2019 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10, a tournament held under the aegis of the ECB.
Samuels was drafted into the Karnataka Tuskers squad, but did not play the tournament.
Samuels was charged

investigation by concealing information that may have been relevant to the investigation.
The tribunal found him guilty on all four counts -- the first by a majority decision, and the other three by unanimous decisions.
Samuels announced his retirement in November 2020, after a career in which he played 71 Tests, 207 ODIs and 67 T20Is, and scored over 11,000 international runs and 17 centuries. While his record suggested he never made the most of his sumptuous talent, his highs were spectacular, most notably
when he top-scored in the T20 World Cup finals of 2012 and 2016.
He was no stranger to controversy during his career, the lowest point of which was his two-year ban after being found guilty, in May 2008, of "receiving money, or benefit or other reward that could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute".
In 2021, Samuels became one of 19 Jamaican cricketers to feature on a mural unveiled at Sabina Park as part of a larger art project that aims to turn Kingston into a "destination city"
