Plethora of opportunities on the horizon for Region Two

–– electricity bill to be slashed by 50 per cent, more employment, house lots, better drainage

–– farmers’ livelihoods top priority, President Ali affirms

RESIDENTS of Region

Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam ) will see more benefits and opportunities over the next few years , ranging from more employment to cheaper electricity , President Dr . Irfaan Ali announced in front of a massive crowd at the Supenaam waterfront on Tuesday.

The President said the A Partnership for

National Unity + Alliance For Change ( APNU+AFC) destroyed the livelihoods of the residents of Region Two during 2015-2020 , but the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has been able to not only restore what was taken away, but also give the people more than what was promised

While advocating for synergy between Central Government and local authorities ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGEs), the President guaranteed that the governing PPP/C will continue to enhance the Cinderella County

The aim is to slash electricity bills by 50 per cent , create more jobs and houses , construct better roads , and enhance the drainage and irrigation network within the region Those were among several of the commitments made by Dr Ali and his team

Reflecting on what

has been achieved so far , the Head of State said that apart from the massive injection of $3.5 billion from the Ministry of Housing’s budget to establish new schemes , more than 720 house lots were allocated within the region

He also said that $5.8 billion was invested to construct community roads

With an atmosphere of relief, the crowd applauded the president along with his cabinet ministers for their outstanding work, and their efforts towards destroying any hindrances in the way of development

Although farming , for instance , is one of the main economic activities within the Pomeroon - Supenaam region, the APNU+AFC “sucked the positivity” out of those communities by stymieing national development.

REPAIRING

THE DAMAGE

Calling out the visible mistreatment under the APNU + AFC with their implementation of harsh taxes, a large increase in land licences and leases , President Ali said the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), under the PPP / C , has invested over $1.6 billion to repair the damages “We came back into government, and we removed all those increases, and we reinvested in drainage and irrigation to give our farmers a better shot at life ,” the President affirmed Highlighting that the Opposition is only parading with a mask of honesty and dignity, the Head of State said that they “trampled upon the backs of the Guyanese people.”

The President also boldly remarked that

Guyana plans to be ‘constructive’, ‘engaging’ member of UN Security Council

–– President Ali affirms that country will assume position with utmost seriousness, dedication

GUYANA was, on Tuesday, elected as a non - permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) following the presentation of its candidature during the elections

“It is a responsibility that we will assume with utmost seriousness and dedication, mindful of the complex and challenging times in which we live,” the Head of State

said

Further , he related that the theme for Guyana’s candidacy was “Partnering for Peace and Prosperity,” which serves as a guide to Guyana’s approach to service on the Security Council

Dr Ali affirmed : “ We intend to be a constructive and engaged partner with the members of the council and the wider international community in the search for solutions to the myriad of momentous challenges that beset our human family.”

He went on to express gratitude to UN member states for the support of Guyana’s candidature and further expressed gratitude to the team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Permanent Representative to the UN and the permanent mission for the efforts in advancing Guyana ’ s candidature and securing the result

Meanwhile, during a live briefing following Guyana’s election , Minister of For -

eign Affairs and International Cooperation , Hugh Todd , affirmed that Guyana’s tenure will be guided by a firm adherence to the rule of international law and the charter of the UN.

Todd said: “Our engagement as a council member will be aimed at contributing constructively to the man -

dates and to enhancing the well - being of our world ’ s people.”

He said that while the international security landscape is extremely complex and threats to global security are rising, Guyana will work with all council members and the UN to address these issues

Additionally , he added that Guyana will bring its strengths and experiences to the work of the council to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of those impacted by its work

Meanwhile , the Opposition , in a statement , said : “ The international security landscape presents complex challenges that require concerted global efforts to address We in the APNU+AFC believe in managing these challenges through the rule of international law and constructive dialogue among nations Guyana ’ s appointment to the Security Council provides us with an opportu-

nity to advocate for these principles and contribute meaningfully to the Council’s work

“ We express our gratitude to our dedicated Foreign Service personnel for their efforts in this regard as

well as to the international community for their support throughout Guyana’s bid for this prestigious seat.” Guyana was elected along with Algeria, the Republic of Korea , Sierra Leone, and Slovenia.

Plethora of opportunities on the horizon...

it was the PPP / C that freed the people from these sufferings, so they can recover from the Opposition’s trauma.

Referring to APNU + AFC ’ s “ betrayal of the nation ” like the song , “ American Shoe ”, he said: “That is the song that is applicable to the APNU+AFC for the pain they inflicted on the people, but under the PPP, I am strong to say I am fine again.”

From page 2 his promises to people , that keep his promises to people and one that has no honour in its promise to people.”

Moreover , while addressing the importance of the upcoming elections, President Ali said : “ We must always elect people who will facilitate development ; embrace development , and who could support development.”

He added: “Today you have a choice , a choice between a political philosophy that believes in people ; that believes in

A section of the crowd at the Supenaam waterfront

The Head of State further said that despite the naysayers calling the government ’ s promises “ gimmicks ”, they have managed to defeat these claims and deliver to the people Addressing issues of

employment, Dr Ali said: “... Right here in this region, we are building call centres so that we can have jobs created for young people, and women who can be trained to work in these call centres adding to the disposable income of the families in the home.”

He continued: “Ensuring that we put back more money in the pockets of people is what this gov -

ernment is about ; giving to the people, empowering the people of our country That is what you must be proud of the record of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government.”

ONWARDS TO CHANGE

Meanwhile , Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton urged the massive

crowd to not fall prey to the race - baiting tactics the Opposition tries to use

He also told Afro-Guyanese that they should no longer feel pressured to vote for someone simply because they look like them

Instead , the minister said: “You have joined the

dependable party”, echoing that the PPP/C is the party that gives while the PNC is the party that “takes money out of your pockets.”

He also reiterated that come June 12, they must cast their vote to not only better their lives but also their families’ own along with the future generations to come.

‘Commendable’ that education grant is extended to private-school children

– parents say

AS the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant distribution continued on Tuesday, the Department of Public Information (DPI) spoke with some of the parents and guardians, who said that the additional funds will enhance their ability to purchase essential supplies.

The $40,000 cash grant sees children registered in nursery, primary, and secondary public and private schools receiving a $ 35,000 grant, together with $5,000 for school uniforms and other supplies.

“I think it is a good initiative to provide this cash grant to families, to help financially ‘prep’ them for the new school term. It’s

also, if I recall correctly, a promise that the government had made before they came into power, that they would restore the cash grant to families, which they did. So, it’s quite remarkable and commendable that they did,” Darren Crawford, a father of three commented at Morgan’s Learning Centre.

He expressed his appreciation for the gesture, noting that often, the assumption exists that students in private schools are financially well-off, which is not always the case.

“So, it is also commendable that the government would have extended it [the grant] to the private school students, and I must say kudos to the government of Guyana in assisting families in the ways that they are doing,”

he said.

Angelina McKenzie-Sookram, who has two school-aged children told the DPI that the distribution of the cash grant in private schools is a ‘great effort’ that the government has made towards ensuring every school-aged child is adequately prepared for the new school year.

“For me, I benefit from it; it helps with so much. And the fact that the amount is increasing yearly makes it even easier on us as parents,” she said.

Siand Dhurjon, who has two young children, said that while this is the first cash grant he is receiving from the government, he is appreciative of the gesture.

“I feel good about this; it is a very good initiative,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Marcel -

la Jameer, a mother of two children attending the School of the Nations, expressed similar sentiments.

“Since the government started the distribution, I have been collecting, because I have three children. I’m very happy to receive it [the grant], because it will really help with the uniforms and the bags and

so on. So I really appreciate it, Mr. President,” she said.

In 2021, the government reintroduced the cash grant distribution for school-aged children, as per its Manifesto promise. The distributions at the time saw each child benefitting from $10,000; $15,000 from the ‘Because

We Care’ grant and $4,000 for their uniform vouchers.

In 2022, the government increased the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant amount from $15,000 to $25,000, and the uniform voucher from $ 4,000 to $5,000.

This meant that each child went from receiving $19,000 to $30,000. (DPI)

$1.3B in contracts signed for roadworks in Yarrowkabra, ‘Parfaite Harmonie’

SOME 18 contracts totalling over $ 1.3 billion were on Tuesday signed for roadworks in the Lamaha/Yarrowkabra and Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra Neighbourhood Democratic Councils ( NDCs ) on the Soesdyke-Linden highway.

The contract signing was spearheaded by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar, and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs Kwame McCoy

These contracts are aligned with President Dr Irfaan Ali ’ s commitment to facilitate infrastructural interventions during an outreach to the communities earlier this year

They also follow an engagement in January led by the ministers, which saw a commitment to construct a number of concrete roads within the communities at reference

This engagement also saw residents complaining of water contamination in the area, to which the ministers committed to having 60 black tanks given to the affected families True to their word, sixty black tanks were delivered to the community in February Minister McCoy said that these developments in the community are indica-

tors of visionary leadership by the PPP/C government “ This government is a visionary government ; a government that has planned and has set out to work with the people to set our country on a footing that will match any other country in the world, and to lift the standards of its people And this is the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government,” the minister said.

Further, Minister Indar urged contractors to cooperate and communicate with the residents during the execution of the project, as well as to employ residents from within the community

“What we have today is a contract being fulfilled by a government that is working for you; these projects are intended for good The way communities and contractors communicate with each other is very important,” he said.

Additionally, the public works minister pointed out that the majority of the contractors for these projects are new contractors , and this diversity indicates that new persons are being awarded opportunities to contribute to their communities , as well as to gain employment

“This country is building at an explosive rate, and a lot

of contractors are required to build out this country This is the opportunity for new people to come onboard; many of them bid , and many of them got work,” Minister Indar noted

The rigid - pavement concrete roads will be designed to last for decades, and will benefit residents in the communities of Swan, Kuru Kururu, and Yarrowk-

abra

Many residents expressed gratitude to the government for the interventions

Community Development Council (CDC) Chairman for Kuru Kururu John Raphael said, “I want to say thank God for the growth that is going on Through this government, I am wit-

nessing a miracle, and I see the vision.”

Meanwhile, 58 contracts totalling over $2.8 billion were signed for roadworks across Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), including in the ‘Parfaite Harmonie ’ Housing Scheme, bringing to fruition another commitment made by President Ali

The contracts provide for the rehabilitation of some 29 kilometres of road in communities such as Cornelia Ida, De Kindren, Meteen - Meer - Zorg , Zeelugt, De Willem, Ruby, Leonora, Anna Catherina, Den Amstel , Wakenaam , and Zeelandia among others

The contractors, many of whom are relatively new to the industry, lauded the bidding process , and are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their communities

One such contractor was Jason Atkins , who said the bidding process was a smooth one . “ I think the government is giving a lot of small contractors like me a fair chance to get into the system by tendering and ensuring that we have our registration intact so that we can qualify ,” Atkins said

Another contractor, Neil Dookhan, said, “Putting in the bids was very simple; once you follow the simple procedure, it is very simple I’m glad I got a contract I did try, and I finally got one, and I’m very happy about that.” (DPI)

A Catalyst For Change

PRESIDENT, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali in a recent address to a large gathering of party supporters described the PPP/C administration as an “all-weather government.” The President highlighted the transformation that is taking place in all the regions of Guyana.

The PPP/C, the President said: “Is about improving the well-being of people It is about investing in communities and investing in the lives of people This is a party you can rely on This is a party that sticks to its commitment This is an all-weather party We come in the sunshine and in rain.”

No one can deny that the face of Guyana is changing in positive ways This is evident in all sectors of the economy and in all spheres of life Guyanese are experiencing unprecedented levels of growth and development

The economy is expanding and an increasing number of Guyanese are finding employment in the construction sector and

the government’s part-time jobs initiative There is a much higher level of disposable income and a corresponding bigger basket of goods and services

Inflation has been largely contained in the face of rising income levels and stable foreign- exchange rates There is no shortage of foreign currency, contrary to what is being peddled in some quarters All of this augurs well both for the private sector and the consuming public

These developments are the direct result of visionary leadership by President Ali and the PPP/C administration, which has been successful in mobilising resources for development

And while it is true that there are significant inflows of resources from oil revenues, this does not, in any way, diminish the importance of prudent fiscal management and the ability of the administration to garner the requisite development resources to enhance the standard of living of the Guyanese people

all across the country

Only recently, a US$150 Guyana-Saudi Fund agreement was signed for critical infrastructural works in the housing sector and construction of the Wismar bridge in Region 10

In his address at the signing ceremony, President Ali said that the Wismar bridge project is essential for modernisation of the township and, more importantly, to the infrastructure master plan which will see Guyana becoming much more competitive along the path of sustainable development

Among the key components of the master plan are Silica City; new interconnecting highways linking Guyana with Brazil; new bridges and improvements in drainage and irrigation in support of the country’s food-production goals

These are all transformative projects which will impact the lives of all Guyanese in positive ways The PPP/C administration has become, as pointed out by Vice-Pres-

ident and PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, a force for development and change

It has transcended the boundaries of party politics and has become a national developmental institution This explains the warm embrace of the party and its leaders in all parts of the country, including traditional APNU strongholds

Without any doubt, the PPP/C is going into the local government elections on Monday, June 12, 2023, with a solid record of progress As a government and party, it certainly has momentum as could be seen from the huge turnout at political meetings and rallies organized by the party

This came about as a result of the hard and dedicated work by President Ali, Vice-President Jagdeo and indeed the entire PPP/C administration

Guyanese will no doubt want to see the wheels of progress continue to turn as they cast their ballots at the upcoming local government elections

Time for the PNC to close up shop

Dear Editor,

WITH less than a week to go, the Local Government Elections (LGE) campaign is certainly gaining momentum, building up a crescendo and marching onwards and upwards.

While a lot can be said of the People Progress Party/Civic (PPP/C) as they drive fear in the Opposition, the President and Vice President are definitely covering grounds and storming their way as they traverse from region to region, pulling mammoth crowds with diversified Guyanese from all walks and ranks of life, male and female, young and not so young, gleefully dressed in their red attire , gathering jovially and proudly waving a colossal display of PPP/C flags of different sizes

This panoramic view is an antonym to the PNC party’s show of desperation, desolation and dislocation

Their devastation has offended their constituencies and many are not favoured to be encouraged to turn out at any gathering, if any at all! It was reported that some PNC meetings were non-supportive with no one in attendance and thus, they had to resort to a zoom meeting!

The upcoming LGE will definitely witness a crowning and overwhelming victory for the PPP/C party

In fact, they have already won by default, there being no contest wins in 13 of the Local Authority Areas, and also, a combined 291 of

the 610 constituencies within the LAAs. Being a well-oiled machine, well organised and well-prepared, the PPP/C is the only effective and efficient party that is possibly capable to compete in all 610 constituencies throughout the length and breadth of Guyana

After taking a set-back in 2011 and a defeat by 1 seat in the 2015 general elections, the PPP/C has been successful in regrouping its application to reprogram its strategies, so that, they were able to overcome all hurdles to regroup as an unstoppable unit to forge a victorious path and reclaim its role as the leading party to govern this land

The Opposition Party has been bisected and dissected with a constant tug - of - war taking place with more questions asked than answers provided to describe the poor state of the party’s quagmire

It is of no surprise that the PNC is perpetually losing its members who are crossing the floor to leave behind a desultory imposition and a clueless and perplexed leadership, to join hands with the confident PPP/C party which is sound, sober and sure of its visionary leadership and a party tasked to provide the realisation of Guyana’s growth through fair and not foul means

A quick look at the pictures provided by the media on these PPP/C campaigns shows Guyanese of all ethnicities in attendance and their faces express satisfaction in the messages proclaimed by the speakers

All Guyanese are firmly and ultimately waking up to consciously accept the fact that

they can no longer flag “dead meat” and it’s time that they jump on the band wagon with the winning trophy

What a laugh the world enjoyed with the PNC’s 34 is half of 65 Norton proposed that “at present $1 million dollars can be handed to households” in a “structured, transparent, accountable and not politicized.”

The VP’s quick calculation resulted in his concluding, “Now, since we started producing oil, we have not received $1.7 billion as yet but he wants to give out $1.7 billion a year That is APNU’s (A Partnership for National Unity ) economics and we don ’ t need to go back there because we know of the ineptitude.”

Guyanese know that accountability and transparency are key factors which are crucial to manage the administration of this developing nation in order to be the richest nation per capita in this hemisphere and to be the leading country poised with the highest GDP

But it takes a party with mathematical geniuses who know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide in order to keep track of numbers and not be fooled by others This is where Guyanese can trust the PPP/C party to take charge of accountability and to mistrust the PNC Party, based on the past and present bitter experiences

Guyanese will never forget nor forgive the PNC for making themselves complete fools at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). Rigging is the survival mode for the PNC Burnham taught them well.

“They tried to rig the [2020] elections for five months Three times they tried to swear in [ former APNU Presidential Candidate David] Granger We still defeated them in 2020 That takes a party that has credibility

No ordinary party in the face of all of these odds could stand up and defeat a force like APNU And we have not remained static from that time to now because of our credibility What did they do in the five years [in office]? It was evident to the country that they had no plan to develop Guyana,” Dr Jagdeo had remarked

Former supporters of the PNC are distancing themselves from their skullduggery “ We saw an Opposition that tried every single day to stop these elections, to stop the evolution of democracy…,” the President had related, while adding that APNU is ashamed to face the people of Guyana considering their past of neglect and lies Now they have become PPP/C supporters, they feel at home with the words of the President,

“My dear friends, since we came back to the office, we have put more money back into the pockets of people We have created more jobs We have built new industries We have protected our Indigenous peoples’ rights We are enhancing the welfare of women and children, the elderly and the vulnerable,” he said

The writing is on the wall It’s time for the PNC to close up shop and call it a day

Yours respectfully, Jai Lall.

Don't forget the past —

Jagdeo tells Region Two residents; says PPP/C is a ‘government for all’

She said that since the government took office the region has benefitted from many transformational projects, including the upgrading of many roads.

De Silva highlighted the government’s continued support for Pomeroon farmers, especially as it pertains to proper drainage in their communities.

She said that there are currently machines working to improve drainage in the Pomeroon River, which has never happened before.

AS he played up his party’s “sound” track record, the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Tuesday assured Region Two residents that everything that is being done is for their benefit and in their best interests.

He was at the time addressing residents and supporters during a rally at the Papa Junction in Charity.

During his address, Jagdeo urged the gathering to never forget the transgressions of the opposition, whom he said “stole” from the country.

Jagdeo emphasised that because the opposition has always approached its supporters with lies, Essequibians

must make the “wise” decision on June 12 and vote for the PPP/C.

He told residents that the PPP/C government restored democracy and has successfully made communities safer and better for everyone. He said that for this level of progress to continue, the PPP/C would need the support of citizens, including those residing in Region Two.

Jagdeo reminded residents that billions of dollars have been invested in the region to improve the health, education and agricultural sectors. He assured them that tremendous development is on the cards for the region.

He added that parents in the region are also benefitting from the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant

which was discontinued by the APNU+AFC. On returning to office, the PPP/C government not only restored the grant, but increased it.

Government has promised that by the end of its first term in office, each

school child should be receiving $50, 000.

Jagdeo said too that as part of the development plans for the region, street lights will be installed to improve security and the housing sector will be further expanded to ensure

that all residents become homeowners.

Meanwhile, Region Two Chairperson Vilma De Silva said that she was elated to see so many persons wearing “red,” which indicated their support for the governing party.

At the end of the rally persons used the opportunity to interact with Jagdeo and other officials and take photos. Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, was also in attendance.

Jones cannot hide from the PNC’s heist of state lands

See full statement by Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy

THE PNC cabal continues to operate in an alternate universe where they believe Guyanese have forgotten their corrupt, evil and abhorrent policies and actions that inflicted severe pain and suffering on ordinary Guyanese whom they, in opposition, now pretend to embrace.

Christopher Jones and other PNC executives should be ashamed to speak publicly on land matters in light of the party’s horrendous land-ownership policies that catered for their rich friends and families, while the

hopes and dreams of countless Guyanese, who wanted simply to own their own homes, were shattered.

The PNC sought to profiteer from the opportunity presented by the self-inflicted turmoil that followed the party’s attempts to rig the 2020 elections.

Thousands of acres of state lands were hurriedly transferred into the hands of families, friends and cronies of the PNC, most of it done during the final seven-month period while the party operated a caretaker government.

Land as much as three times the size of Barbados was secretly and illegally given to one crony. The acreage of land shared among the PNC boys sur-

passes the total amount of land transferred by the PPP to ordinary Guyanese in 23 years.

This irrational land-grabbing crusade by the PNC is indicative of their general approach to policy-making in government and which earned

them the exclusive distinction of being the most corrupt government in the history of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Instead of spewing ridiculous and unfounded claims, Jones should instead, take the lead in ad-

The PNC apologists and sycophants will always seek to shift the focus away from their corrupt heist of state lands by changing the narrative with lies and distortions that seek to make government the bogey man.

Nonetheless, our government’s record of accomplishments on land distribution and home ownership is respected and admired by thousands of Guyanese across the country who are benefitting significantly from the transformational policies

The PNC plundered land and other national assets while in government and this is replicated at the municipal level. Despite subventions from the government, rates, taxes and other financial inflows, several of our towns, particularly Georgetown, have remained stagnated for close to 60 years.

Therefore, we must use the opportunity to vote on June 12 to send an unequivocal message that municipalities are terminating the disastrous policies of the PNC which has led to dilapidated community infrastructure such as roads, bridges, community centres and grounds.

Guyana’s LCDS 2030 shaped by climateadaptation, energy-transition consultations

TO engage with stakeholders about the programmes included in its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, the Government of Guyana conducted a nationwide consultation process last year to address some of the most pressing issues the world is currently facing and how these have been impacting communities and livelihoods in Guyana.

At a consultation session that was held in Bush Lot village in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), the Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha shared with the large gathering that Guyana launched the first Low Carbon Devel-

opment Strategy (LCDS) in 2009 as a developing nation. He explained that the strategy outlined a vision for inclusive, sustainable development, while simultaneously maintaining forest cover on about 85% of our landmass.

The minister added that since then, Guyana has developed several systems that establish the enormous contributions that the nation’s ecosystems make to the health and economy of the globe, as well as its status as one of the most crucial nations for the protection of biodiversity. Given its recent oil and gas discoveries, Guyana has had one of the hemisphere’s

fastest-expanding economies in 2022, but even so, the country has managed to keep the second-highest percentage of forest cover on the planet, with more than 99.5 percent of the forest, or roughly 18 million hectares, remaining undisturbed, which is mainly attributable to coordinated efforts by the state, the private sector, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities.

During a series of engagements that Minister Mustapha led, he shared with stakeholders that Guyana’s new LDCS 2030 aims to transition the country to a low-carbon economy. He said, “Guyana’s Low Carbon

Development Strategy

2030 sets out a vision for expanding a low-carbon economy in Guyana. This will be achieved through low-carbon energy, employment and development opportunities for all sections of our society, a transformation of digital,

marine, and transportation infrastructure, and massive investment in adapting to the impacts of climate change. With this strategy, new incentives for a low-carbon economy will be created; systems will be in place to reduce the impacts of

climate change and reduce biodiversity loss; future growth through clean energy and low-carbon development will be stimulated, and Guyana will be further aligned with global climate and biodiversity goals.”

Mustapha further explained that by implementing the policies in the LCDS, Guyanese will

eventually benefit from a less expensive and more dependable power supply when the nation produces its own natural gas and

There will be an increase in capacity and increased dependability for the Demerara-Berbice Interconnectivity System (DBIS). On the DBIS, the combination of natural gas and facility will be used,

The minister explained that the continued replacement of heavy fuel oil, growth in wind and solar energy, and the opening of Guyana’s second hydropower project, the location of which will be determined by 2025, are all goals for the years 2027 to 2032. Peeping Tom: A fault line in Homo sapiens

WHEN I started writing for the Kaieteur News about 30 years ago , I took objection to an anonymous columnist named Peeping Tom

In several columns , I argued that it is moral ugliness to have a commentator openly attacking people personally yet hiding under their mother’s dress

In several columns, I opined that such conduct could never be defended by any philosophical school of thought It is

completely unacceptable for a commentator to hide behind a mask and fictionalise the lives of real people.

I also postulated that a newspaper should only accept pen names when the analyst writes on issues There is nothing wrong with a financial expert , without identifying him/ herself, assessing financial and economic issues in a country

I am still confused as to how the forensic experts in the Guyana Police

Force cannot trace the origin of a social media operator that goes under the guise of “mudwata”.

No one using a pseudonym on any social media platform can threaten a head of government anywhere in the world without being traced Why Guyana continues to tolerate a social media platform named “mudwata”, in which people’s character are sadistically lambasted is beyond comprehension

For decades now , Peeping Tom has described public figures in

unflattering terms But it is a mutual relation between “Tom” and the owner of the Kaieteur News “Tom” acts as a surrogate for the owner, who finds in “Tom” someone who can massage his ego. This was a role asked of me when I was at that paper, which I rejected over the past 30 years with vehement

arrogance. “Tom” enjoys doing what he does, maybe courtesy of a paycheck But 30 years is a long time to dwell in such depravity

Recently, “Tom” has been promoting the wannabee politician, Mr. Glen Lall.

I am enraged at a majority of the emanations of Peeping Tom, but felt compelled to compose this

piece here by Tom’s derogation of Bharrat Jagdeo’s frequent rebuttal of Aubrey Norton’s positions It is commonsensical for government leaders to reply and criticise fiction and propaganda uttered against them Politics demands that

GUYANA CHRONICLE, Wednesday, June 7, 2023 11

Peeping Tom: A fault line in Homo ...

you confront narratives that are false.

Electoral politics requires you to debase false claims, because your constituencies expect that of you

Your constituencies want to know if the Opposition Leader is correct when he said you spent $ 100 million in one village, and right in the next

village, you spent just $1 million It is incumbent upon you to deny that, if it is not factual You must address that mischief by the Opposition Leader, if the figures are complete fiction

In the United States , President Biden founded the Disinformation Board; it is designed to reply to disinformation spread

by people who are out to attack the government When politicians become government leaders, they still have to explain things to their constituencies, because at the next election campaign, they have to go into the fields and beg for votes

Three times I read where the Stabroek News, in the paper’s editorials,

castigated the President , Vice - President and the Attorney-General for confronting the prejudice, disinformation and viciousness of biased civil society organisations

Two examples should suffice The Vice - President described the Guyana Human Rights Association as a one-man band without credibility It is incumbent on a Prime Minister or President to defend his /her government record against actors in society that have no credibility

In that way, the society and the constituencies of the PM or President become aware that there are critics of the government that are in no moral position to judge ruling politicians The second example

is that on many occasions, the Vice-President would cite the hypocrisy of governmental critics, because these actors call for transparency and accountability from State actors, values that they themselves shun.

No one in Guyana knows who the major shareholders in Stabroek News are

That is information

citizens are entitled to The name of one major shareholder would shock you, and though he wants the government to be transparent, he is not prepared to be so himself

It would shock you to know who the main financier of Demerara Waves is; he is insanely anti-government , but Demerara Waves would not name

him Yet this financier wants government to be transparent

Why would any newspaper castigate government leaders for not being transparent , and when these government leaders call on sections of society to be open and accountable , the private media accuse them of being abusive to civil society organisations?

The story of Peeping Tom will go on, because the Kaieteur News that encourages him has no moral compass It is for decent citizens to understand how hypocritical those that criticise the government are Surely , there must be moral rules which all humans must adhere to.

GCCI reiterates call for visa-free access to Canada for Guyanese

THE Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) has reiterated its call for visa-free access to Canada for Guyanese.

This call follows an announcement emanating from the Government of Canada which indicates that 13 countries have qualified to receive visa-free access to the North American country The list includes Latin American and Caribbean territories, and others.

“ The GCCI welcomes

that the Government of Canada remains receptive to allowing visa-free access to its territory and views this as a positive move to engender economic growth

“ In light of this move , the Chamber of Commerce would like to take the opportunity to reiterate its call for visa-free access for Guyanese to Canada Having established diplomatic relations with Guyana since 1964, the two countries have developed strong economic

and commercial ties, developed on mutual respect for democracy and enterprise,” the chamber said

Guyana, as it is now, is the third largest merchandising partner with Canada in the Caribbean Community and is one of the fastest growing economies in the world

The GCCI itself continues to deepen relations with Canada, having established MoUs with a number of sister agencies in the country, hosting and fielding trade missions and continuing to work to support partnerships between Guyanese and Ca-

nadian companies

With a diaspora in excess of 85,000 in Canada , the GCCI believes that removal of the visa restriction of Guyanese to Canada will serve to engender improved trade relations, support deeper commercial and economic ties, and support economic growth for both territories

“The GCCI thanks the Government of Canada and the Canadian people for [ their ] continued leadership role in global

affairs, support for Guyana ’ s development and anticipates continued cooperation with both the government and private sector of Canada ,” the chamber said.

PM Phillips calls on dissatisfied APNU supporters to join PPP/C

reaffirms government’s support for residents of Port Kaituma

PEOPLE say crowds do not matter, that big crowds at political meetings do not necessarily indicate anything positive, but persons at Port Kaituma, on Tuesday, would say otherwise, given the massive turnout at the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C) public meeting.

The crowd braved a

President , Dr . Irfaan Ali ’ s One Guyana initiative

The people of Fitzburg, Arakaka, 4 Miles, Matarkai, and surrounding areas, by all indications, are ready to roll Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, was in his element Like Prime Minister Phillips, Croal reminded the audience of all the good works done by the PPP / C

Prime Minister Phillips drew an “Atlantic” applause when he said how many APNU supporters in Linden , Bartica , Georgetown , and New Amsterdam have crossed over to the PPP/C He issued an open invitation to the good folks of the Barima - Waini region to come over to the PPP/C

The Local Government

heavy downpour of rain to listen to an impassioned speech by Prime Minister , Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips

The retired Brigadier pumped up the crowd by reminding them that the PPP/ C’s colours represent democratic values, and that this Local Government Elections (LGEs) is about the defence of Guyana’s democratic institutions

Prime Minister Phillips enthusiastically called for the dissatisfied supporters in APNU to join the PPP/C

An earlier speech by the young and talented Jason Ramjohn, who recently crossed over from APNU to the PPP/C ticket, had already set the stage for a stinging rebuke of PNC / APNU incompetence

The young Ramjohn received sustained applause when he belted out – “ the PPP/C does not fight character attack politics.”

The comment was made because numerous PPP / C candidates who happen to be Afro-Guyanese are currently being harassed with foul name-calling by APNU operatives in the area Ramjohn went on to say that the PPP/C fights “policy politics.”

Sarah Browne Shadeek, currently Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs , delivered a powerful speech , calling for PPP/C supporters from Matthews Ridge to Port Kaituma to turn out in their numbers and cast their ballot for economic development and

since it was elected to office in August 2020

The list was so compelling it would have made any listener from APNU afraid, very afraid The audience went into overdrive when Minister Croal spoke about the restoration of the “Because we Care Cash Grant” that had been snuffed out by the APNU-AFC

The programme which started under the PPP/C with $10,000, then wantonly cancelled by the APNU-AFC, is now paying $40,000 to every child of school age in Guyana

What the APNU should truly be afraid of is the sheer diversity of the PPP/C list of candidates for the LGE They span decades by age, come from different social backgrounds, and most poignantly, come from multiple ethnic backgrounds

If ever anyone doubted that Guyana is a land of six “ races ,” they should have been at Port Kaituma The diversity of candidates is visible, authentic, and real There is no token candidate

The PPP/C has a track record of keeping promises This was a central point for numerous speakers

Consistent with this , Minister Croal declared that immediately after the LGEs on June 12, the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, will be in Port Kaituma and surrounding areas to discuss how the region can contribute to self-sufficiency in local food supply , and to the food security of the country

Elections are now only days away. Persons are of the view that the PPP/C’s “ showing ” at Port Kaituma should be seen as a shot across the bow of APNU And they believe that too many people are switching from the APNU to the PPP/C and it is too late now to attempt any reversal . Boland pips Neser for WTC Final spot, Cummins confirms

SCOTT Boland has gotten the nod to play his maiden Test in England as Australia all but confirmed the team they will take into their World Test Championship final against India at The Oval this week.

Captain Pat Cummins con-

firmed Boland, whose bowling average of 13.42 is the lowest of any Test cricketer to have sent down at least 1000 deliveries since the start of the 20th century, had pipped Michael Neser for the final bowling spot in Australia's XI.Cummins' subsequent ex-

planation there would be "no surprises" in the XI picked for one-off clash in south London suggests Australia's team would revert to its familiar balance of five batters ahead of allrounder Cameron Green, wicketkeeper Alex Carey, then three quicks and a spinner.

Likely Australia XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland Neser had been called into the Aussies' official 15-player squad for the ICC-run contest beginning Wednesday after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out due to injury.

But Boland's supreme record cultivated over seven Tests since his remarkable debut during the last Ashes series in 2021-22 will see him join Cummins, Green, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon in Australia's expected bowling attack.

Cummins admits the Victorian is "very close" to being considered an equal to the 'big three' fast bowlers in the selection hierarchy, but rejected the idea of a "pecking order" being in place.

"We're big on kind of everyone bowling slightly differently," Cummins told reporters.

"Scott is a seam bowler on a good length, but he just offers something slightly different to Joshy Hazlewood, and Starcy being a left hander is bit different.

"So I don't think there's ever a pecking order. You think about the three guys that you want to go out and play."

It feeds into the likelihood that Australia will mix and match their pace bowlers through a seven-and-a-halfweek stretch in which they will play six Tests.

It means Neser and even Sean Abbott could face England during the ensuing Ashes campaign, with Cummins suggesting their bowlers have no excuse not to go all-out in every Test

"That's the luxury of having bench strength," he said.

home.

"In the past here in England, because the ball does talk a little more, I've seen players get too caught up in trying to take wickets every ball because you've suddenly got the ball swinging and seaming," said Cummins.

"Someone like Scotty, it's just a really simple game-plan – you hit your good areas and you stay there all day and hopefully the ball will do the work for you

"'Hoff' (Hazlewood) was really close to being available for this one so he'll be available for the first (Ashes) Test.

"'Ness' (Neser), you see how well he's been doing in county cricket, Sean Abbott's here, so I'm sure we'll be calling on a lot of resources.

"You don't want to finish off a Test match with something (left) in the tank knowing that you've got other guys fresh that you could bring in a few days later."

Cummins, however, will carefully manage Green's bowling workloads through the next few weeks, particularly given he is coming off a T20-heavy lead-up having only finished his maiden Indian Premier League campaign less than two weeks ago.

"You would think the fast bowlers are probably going to bowl more overs at the start (of the tour), and Greeny ends up taking a bit more of a load towards the end of the series. That normally naturally pans out that way anyway," said Cummins.

"Greeny is available, he is fit, but it is probably not in our interest to burn him and put 40 overs into him in a game, which is a conversation we have pretty much before every Test match, and he has never really red-lined so far."

Boland, who played the first match of this year's Test tour of India before Australia went in with three spinners for the rest of the series, is likely to be one of only two Australians featuring in their first international matches in England (Green is the othe

The 34-year-old's only prior UK playing experience came on a 2018 Indigenous tour.

But Cummins insisted he does not need to change from the bowling style that has made him such a force at

"He's had a few bowls over here now and has looked good. But he looks good whenever he bowls."

A green surface greeted the teams two days out from their inaugural Test encounter on neutral territory, though Cummins expects the grass to be trimmed before Wednesday.

Abbott, who has played at The Oval in three first-class games this northern summer for the ground's home county Surrey before joining the Test group as a reserve bowler in recent days, has told the Australians to expect a surface that is fast and bouncy by English standards

Andy Flower, England's former head coach who led them to their breakthrough 2010-11 Ashes series win down under, has also helped the Australians get up to speed with local conditions.

The former Zimbabwe batter, who played a season for South Australia in 2004, is now a freelance coach and was roped in by Andrew McDonald to help with their preparations for the WTC Final.

Flower is also expected to assist the Australians at stages during the forthcoming Ashes series.

"Today was his first time around the group," said Cummins. "He'll dip in and out, a different voice.

"He knows these conditions really well, hopefully knows the opposition. If he can give us one little bit of insight into playing in England that we haven't thought about, then it's worth it.

"Andrew's worked with him quite a bit and you've seen us over the years bring in different people at different times. Pretty lucky to have someone as experienced as Andy."

IBA wants boxing in Olympics but will not be run by third parties - Kremlev

PARIS, (Reuters) - Boxing must stay in the Olympic Games and the International Boxing Association (IBA) will do everything for it to happen but the sport also wants respect and will not be run by third parties, IBA President Umar Kremlev said.

Kremlev told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday that any decision to exclude boxing based solely on feelings of revenge against the IBA and its Russian president, and without any direct consultations, was "even worse than terrorism."

The International Olympic Committee's Executive Board will meet today to discuss the state of reforms by the IBA with the sport's Olympic future in the balance.

"We would like IOC President Thomas Bach and all the executive board members and IOC members to know that we

want to be part of the Olympics," Kremlev said.

"We will do everything to achieve that but we don't want to be dictated and governed by third persons. We will not let it happen. We would like to be respected."

The IOC suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance, fi -

nance, refereeing and ethical issues and did not involve it in running the boxing events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

It has already provisionally excluded the sport from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and has demanded immediate reforms but has warned repeatedly the IBA was not doing enough.

In an IBA report sent to the IOC recently the association blamed the Olympic body for intransigence and false statements.

It also said the IOC completely ignored the involvement of former boxing boss and thenIOC member CK Wu, who was banned for life by the AIBA, now the IBA, in 2018, for the association’s financial and governance problems dating back to 2016.

IOC CRITICISM

"I would like to ask ... why did the IOC keep its eyes shut

Djokovic & Alcaraz to meet in French Open semi-finals

and keep silent (over CK Wu's involvement)," Kremlev said. "The current crisis situation and the past scandals were all situations created by the member of the IOC, Mr CK Wu."

The IOC has not sanctioned CK Wu, who in 2020 resigned from the Olympic body citing medical reasons.

Taiwan's Wu could not immediately be reached by Reuters but he has always denied any wrongdoing.

"We would like everyone to know that the IBA has accomplished 95% of the recommendations," Kremlev added. "We have wiped out the debts, ensured financial stability..."

He said the IBA was now offering prize money at its world championships while also supporting dozens of smaller national federations in the development of the sport.

"Our medals are also produced from pure gold to prove that everything is pure, clear and sincere," he said, in a thinly-veiled dig at the IOC whose

Olympic gold medals contain only small amounts of the precious metal.

Kremlev also called on the IOC to start a direct dialogue and not "speak through correspondents."

According to the IBA report, repeated efforts by IBA officials to meet with IOC officials were ignored.

The IOC has repeatedly warned the IBA more needs to be done. Other issues such as a sponsorship deal with Russian energy giant Gazprom that has since been terminated further complicated the IBA's position with Russia invading Ukraine last year.

"We are the home of boxing. We would like the IOC to also achieve this principle of becoming the home of the Olympic movement," Kremlev said.

He noted that other problems like refereeing and competition issues had been resolved and denied Russia's war in Ukraine, which Moscow call a 'special military operation', had added

to the IBA's problems as the association had a responsibility towards all member countries, including Ukraine and Russia.

BREAKAWAY GROUP

Kremlev, a Russian businessman with close ties to the Kremlin, said those critical of the IBA should attend tournaments and witness the "high level" of organisation.

Kremlev has been in charge since 2020 but the IBA's actions in past years have led to the creation of a breakaway group called World Boxing with several countries having left his organisation to join it.

"I would like (some sports officials) to be fully engaged and cooperative with us and leave out personal ambitions," he said.

"If boxing is just excluded from the Olympic family without any negotiations, meetings, or participation as observers, if the decision is to take revenge and punish the IBA, it is even worse than terrorism," he said.

Alcaraz will face Novak Djokovic in the French Open semi-finals after crushing Stefanos Tsitsipas to set up the highly anticipated clash.Spain's Alcaraz, 20, won 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7-5) against the Greek fifth seed.

Serbia's Djokovic survived a quarter-final scare from Karen Khachanov to keep his bid for a record 23rd men's Grand Slam singles title alive.

Djokovic, 36, was in danger of falling two sets behind against the Russian but prevailed 4-6 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 6-4.

The third seed could become the first man to win all four majors at least three times.

But if he is going to do that he must come through his toughest test yet when he meets US Open champion Alcaraz in the last four on Friday.

"This match is what everyone wants to watch and it will be a good one to play," said world number one Alcaraz.

"If you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Djokovic is one of the best in the world and I'm looking forward to it."

In the absence of the injured Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Alcaraz have long been considered joint favourites to take the 14time champion's crown - what they have showed so far in this tournament strongly suggests that remains the case.

Tantalising semi-final awaits as pair finally meet at a major

From the moment the French

Open draw was made almost a fortnight ago, eyes were drawn to the potential men's semi-final that many fans had dreamed of seeing.

With Djokovic seeded third after injury issues in the buildup to Roland Garros, the draw pitched him in the same half as the youngster who has replaced him as the world's leading player.

The unpredictable nature of sport means things do not always pan out as expected, but the fine form of Alcaraz and Djokovic has ensured a blockbuster semi-final in Paris.

Djokovic, who has won five of the past seven majors he has played, and Alcaraz have been two of the standout players on the men's tour this season.

However, duels between the pair - either head-to-head or even being present in the biggest

tournaments - have been rare.

Alcaraz stylishly set up their first meeting at a major by demolishing an opponent who reached the Roland Garros final in 2021.

After breaking for a 2-1 lead in the opening set, the Spaniard moved quickly through the gears and found his top level, leaving 24-year-old Tsitsipas befuddled.

Alcaraz showcased the full range of his mercurial talent, including wondrous returns off both flanks and deft drop-shots, to win the first set in 34 minutes.

Already looking forlorn and needing encouragement from the Chatrier crowd, Tsitsipas lost his serve in the opening game of the next set to love and won just 13 points as Alcaraz moved two sets ahead with little over an hour on the clock.

The third set looked to be following suit. Alcaraz broke at the first opportunity as he surged to a 3-0 lead and looked likely to serve out a one-sided contest before Tsitsipas produced a late rally.

After saving two match points at 5-3, Tsitsipas earned his first break points of the evening and put the set back on serve at 5-5, only for Alcaraz to control the tie-break and reach his first Roland Garros semi-final.

"It wasn't really that much fun out there in the first two sets. I felt completely off," Tsitsipas said after the match.

"I just wish it never happens again. It sucks."(BBC Sport)

Moeen Ali is considering a return to Test cricket for the Ashes

THE offspinning allrounder, who retired from the format at the end of the 2021 summer, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he has been approached by the England management to answer a mayday call after Jack Leach was ruled out of the five-match series with a back stress fracture.

Moeen, 35, has amassed 67 Test caps, scoring 2914 runs and taking 195 wickets at an average of 36.66. His decision to step away from the format came with a view to focusing solely on limited-overs cricket, believing his race had been run in long-form cricket, partly because of issues with his spinning finger. His final Test, against India at the Oval in September 2021, was also his last first-class match.

Since then, he has helped England win the 2022 T20 World Cup and secured a second IPL title with Chennai Super Kings earlier this year. He has also returned to his home county, Warwickshire, from Worcestershire, and is currently captaining their T20 side, Birmingham Bears, in the Vitality Blast. He is also due to undertake media duties for the Ashes.

Replacing Leach would be

no mean feat. The Somerset spinner has played all 13 Tests under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, with 45 dismissalsno Englishman has more - and sending down 515.1 overs, more than any other bowler in the world in that time.

Following the 10-wicket win over Ireland at Lord's England will only meet up for training for the first Test at Edgbaston a week on Tuesday, after a team-bonding trip to Loch Lomond this weekend.

As such, a decision on Leach's

replacement does not need to be made imminently.

Moeen does not have a great record against Australia, with 20 dismissals across 11 matches at an unflattering average of 64.65. That is a little better at home (47.86) with 15 wickets in six Tests, 12 of those coming in 2015 during England's last successful Ashes campaign.

He was dropped after the first Test of the 2019 series.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo during the IPL, Moeen said he believed his bowling was

returning to something close to his best after falling away since his Test retirement. He took nine wickets at 21.66 during the tournament.

"I actually feel like there's things I've been missing over the last couple of years," he said. "I've just started to get it back again: a bit of rhythm in my action.

"When I was playing Test matches, I always felt like I was bowling well in white-ball cricket. You can kind of lose that rhythm, I guess. I think I've got to have that mindset of still bowling with that same energy as I would have done in Test matches."

Speaking on Monday, Stuart Broad championed Moeen's qualities, regarding him as an ideal fit for the current regime.

"We know Mo is a phenomenal cricketer and someone who would fit into Stokes and Baz's philosophy beautifully," Broad told Sky Sports. "I don't know if he's being considered by the selectors or if he would consider red-ball cricket again. But he's a mighty fine cricketer."

McCullum had approached Moeen to come out of retirement last summer, with a view to tour-

KARIM Benzema marked his final Real Madrid appearance with a goal as they drew their last game of the La Liga season at home to Athletic Bilbao.

The 35-year-old, second on the club's all-time record goalscoring list, slotted in from the penalty spot after Eder Militao was fouled in the box.

Real confirmed the end of Benzema's 14-year stay at the Bernabeu on Sunday, before a reported move to Saudi Arabia.

Oihan Sancet had earlier lashed the visitors in front from close range.

Sancet fired home after Thibaut Courtois had kept out his initial attempt, while the Belgium goalkeeper also saved a first-half penalty from Mikel Vesga following Toni Kroos' handball.

Rodrygo wasted Real's best chance to win the game late on, diverting Vinicius Jr's low cross over the bar

ing Pakistan in December. That was eventually turned down with Moeen citing an already packed winter schedule with the T20 World Cup and ILT20 commitments with Sharjah Warriors at the start of 2023. At the time, McCullum did not regard Moeen's lack of red-ball cricket as a barrier for his inclusion.

If Moeen turns down the offer this time, consideration will be made to other spinning allrounders in Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed - who both took five-wicket hauls in Pakistanand Liam Livingstone, who left that tour after sustaining a knee injury in the first Test. Hampshire's Liam Dawson, a left-arm spinner and accomplished batter, is also an outside shot.

"The like-for-like is Liam Dawson," Alastair Cook, the former England captain, said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "He could do exactly the same as Jack Leach [but] he's a better batsman... but it's the conservative option, it's the bloke who could

from inside the six-yard box.

Benzema cut a largely peripheral figure throughout his final game, but his spotkick - rolled into the middle of the goal - provided a fitting conclusion to a glittering career in Spain which included five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles.

The France striker was replaced by Luka Modric in the 74th minute, leaving the field to a superb ovation from the home crowd.

Marco Asensio, whose own eight-year spell with Real will come to an end this summer, received a similar reception when he was taken off during stoppage time.

But there was no farewell appearance for former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard, who was an unused substitute prior to his departure on 30 June.

hold an end up and won't let anyone down. His bowling has got a lot better over the last few years, but that just seems very unlike Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum to take the safe option, the conservative option.

"I would probably go for Dawson for that role... but I think England will take the more aggressive. They're trying to get Moeen. It's a tough one for Mo because he won't want to let Ben Stokes down. He's really close with him. But it's a big ask. When you know what Test cricket - and certainly an Ashes - can do to you mentally, you've got to really want to be out there in the battle.

"Obviously in the last few years, he kind of felt like he'd done his time in Test cricket. It's whether a bit of time away has changed that. It's easy saying yes over a phone call but actually, when the pressure gets on, do you really want to be there?"(Cricinfo)

India worried about form and fitness before facing Australia

INDIA will be concerned about injuries to some of their leading players and their lack of preparation time going into the World Test Championship final against Australia today.

The squad of 15, plus three reserves, left for London in three batches.

Five of them, including Ravindra Jadeja, were part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) final in Ahmedabad which, because of rain, went into a third day and only finished at 01:35 local time on Tuesday - just eight days before the WTC final.

Without any warm-up matches, India will be hoping their players can quickly acclimatise as they transition from T20 cricket in India to Test cricket in England.

One man who has had plenty of time to acclimatise is batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who is one of the few top Indian cricketers who does not play in the IPL.

Instead, he has been captaining Sussex in the County Championship and has scored three centuries against the red ball at an average of 68.

The man of the moment, though, is undoubtedly Shubman Gill.

The 23-year-old, who watched Saturday's FA Cup final in London alongside team-mate Virat Kohli, was named player of the tournament in the IPL for his three centuries for Gujarat

Titans.

For India, he has scored centuries in all three formats in the last six months.

India, however, will be without their leading fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, and iconic wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, because of injuries.

They were further hit by the back injury suffered by stylish batter Shreyas Iyer earlier this year and then to opener KL Rahul, who suffered a leg injury in the IPL.

Rahul has been replaced in the squad by uncapped wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.

Kishan will compete with Srikar Bharat to take the gloves. Bharat, who has played four Tests, is regarded as a better keeper.

"The selectors, captain [Ro-

hit Sharma] and coach (Rahul Dravid) believe in tried and tested players," said ex-India wicketkeeper and BCCI general manager, Saba Karim.

"This is a one-off so they would not like to risk playing someone with no Test experience. I had backed Kishan for the recent home series against Australia but Bharat was chosen.

"In England where the ball wobbles after crossing the stumps, it is experience that counts.

"After Rahul's injury I felt they should have chosen Wridhiman Saha, as technically he is the best in India with the gloves.

"But now that the choice is between Bharat and Kishan, the team management will surely go for Bharat."

Bumrah has been plagued with back issues and had surgery in New Zealand in March. He has not played a Test match since July 2022.

Pant was lucky to escape with his life after being pulled out of his burning SUV following an accident in December. He is doubtful for the rest of the year.

The usual selection headache when India play abroad is whether to include two spinners in the playing XI - Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin - or just one to augment the pace bowling attack.

"If the Test was at Lord's I

would have gone with three or four seamers and one spinner," said ex-India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.

"But at The Oval where there is some bounce and turn in the second innings, two spinners are essential if you want to win a Test match.

"With both spinners being good batters as well, you will have five specialist batsmen and two all-rounders. That is the perfect balance."

Though crowds for Test matches have thinned considerably over the past two decades, interest in the Test team's progress is still high and is followed avidly.

India, which last year overtook China as the world's most populous nation, has more active smartphones than anywhere in the world, except China, and this has led to a surge of interest in the national team on handheld devices.

The World Test Championship, introduced by the ICC in February 2019, has considerably increased the following for Test matches and interest peaked as India tussled with Sri Lanka for the second spot in the final following Australia's qualification.

India have not won an ICC trophy since the Champions Trophy in England in 2013.

Ten years later, they have another chance in the same country. (BBC Sport)

ICC preps back-up pitch for WTC final in case of protestor disruption

The ICC has been preparing a back-up pitch at The Oval for the World Test Championship final, as a precaution against the threat of potential disruptions by activists from Just Stop Oil.

The move to prepare another pitch is to guard against a worst-case scenario and the strip that will be used for the Test, which begins today, remains the same one which has been tended over the past few days.

The move comes after a series of disruptions by Just Stop Oil activists, a coalition made up of environmental action groups fighting to raise awareness about climate change, at sporting events across UK over the last year. Premier League football, the World Snooker

Female U-19 InterCounty cricket washed out at Everest ground

2nd round set for Port Mourant ground in Berbice tomorrow

Championships and Premiership Rugby Union have all been affected.

Last week the England men's team bus, en route to Lord's for the one-off Test

against Ireland, was held up briefly on the first morning after being blocked by activists. On Monday morning, the Australia team bus was similarly delayed, stuck in

traffic because of Just Stop Oil protests, as they headed to The Oval for training.

The ICC has updated its playing conditions for the WTC final with a clause

HEAVY overnight and early morning rain left the outfield of the Everest ground in a soggy condition yesterday forcing the Umpires to call off the second round of the female U-19 30-over game between Berbice and Essequibo just after lunch, just as the sun came out in all of its glory .

The GBC has taken the decision to switch this

accounting for the use of another pitch in case the one in use is damaged, or is deemed dangerous. The initial step in the playing conditions is to see if the existing pitch can be repaired and the match to restart from the point it was stopped subject to the surface not affecting either team.

In case the original pitch cannot be repaired a new pitch will come into play. Only if it is not possible to resume the match on that other pitch will the match then be abandoned and deemed a no-result.

Both teams have been informed by the ICC of the development. "It's something we got in the security briefing a couple days ago," Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, said. "I've heard that they're aware of it and kind of keep an eye out. But that's as much as we've heard.

"So hopefully, it doesn't happen, obviously. But I've

game to the Port Mourant ground in Corentyne from noon tomorrow.

The third and fourth rounds will be reduced to T20s and both will be played on Friday at the same venue. This tournament will be used to select Guyana's team for next month's Regional U-19 female tournament.

heard there's a few different events that have been affected."

Cummins has been a vocal advocate on the climate and formed the Cricket for Climate group along with fellow Australian cricketers to reduce the sport's carbon footprint.

"First of all I have to say I haven't really followed it at all, so I don't really know what these protests are about, but my view is always there's right ways to go about things and potentially not the right way to go about things," Cummins said on what he thought of method used by Just Stop Oil protestors. "Whenever anyone's got any beliefs, you just hope you take the right option."

Security has been beefed up for both teams as well as for the Test, which is a sellout for all five days.(Cricinfo).

King, Charles hit fifties as West Indies beat UAE by 78 runs to secure series win

Brandon King and Johnson Charles both struck fifties as the West Indies took an unassailable 2-0 lead over the UAE with a 78-run win in the second ODI at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The day started brilliantly for the West Indies as the opening pair of King and Charles put on 129 for the first wicket after West Indian captain Shai Hope won the toss and chose to bat first.

In the process, Charles brought up his fifth ODI half-century before being dismissed for a rapid 47-ball 63. The St. Lucian hit eight fours and three sixes in his knock.

King, who brought up a maiden ODI hundred on the way to a man of the match performance in the first encounter, continued his good form with 64 off 70 balls including four fours and as many sixes.

The tourists then got solid contributions from Odean Smith (37), Keacy Carty (32), Kavem Hodge (26) as they were eventually bowled out for 306 with one ball to spare.

Zahoor Khan led the way with the ball for the UAE with 3-44 from 9.5 overs while Aayan Khan (2-45), Ali Naseer (2-69) and Sanchit Sharma (2-69) also provided good contributions.

The UAE reply looked to be coming to an end quickly at 95-5 in the 24th over before a fighting 80-run partnership between Basil Hameed and Ali Naseer brought some respectability to proceedings.

Hameed batted valiantly, facing 84 balls before he fell for 49. He hit a boundary and three sixes in his knock.

Meanwhile, Naseer, who struck a fifty in the series opener, got his second straight half-century with a 53-ball 57 including six fours and three sixes.

Vriitya Aravind also contributed 36 and Aayan Khan 23* as the UAE eventually made 227-7 off their 50 overs.

Kavem Hodge (2-46 from 8) and Roston Chase (2-49 from 10) were the day’s best bowlers for the West Indies while debutant, Akeem Jordan, Odean Smith and Yannic Cariah were the other wicket-takers.
