SINCE being elected to office in 2020, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic ( PPP / C ) Government has spent almost $ 4 billion to upgrade and install infrastructure in the communities of Zeelugt and Tuschen, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).
This was according to President, Dr Irfaan Ali, during his address at the commissioning of a $200 million school, the Victoria Lily Primary School at
He said that the Ministry of Education completed an infrastructural analysis based on the population and students, giving them a clear understanding of what additional infrastructure is needed based on the demand and the education system
“We know now that we have to invest in the short term in 10 new facilities across the country, but in this region , we ’ re going to build two additional facilities, hopefully before the end of the year or to be ready for the next term
Additionally , the school commissioned on Tuesday, is one of the first schools that will begin teaching Spanish from Grades One to Five
President Ali said that there are now more than 1,000 re - migrant or migrant children who speak Spanish, being enrolled in the school system in Region Three.
“So, in this region, particularly, we need to improvise in our education system in a way in which we ensure that the children, many of whom are
the fact that the old Tuschen Primary School was affected by severe overcrowding
“So much so that your children were on shifts , which means that your children were not getting education like the rest of the country and that immediately put them at a disadvantage,” she said
Manickchand said that President Ali, upon hearing this, said there cannot be children not going to
primary school, especially given the issue of having Region Three be the home for over 750 new children in the system from migrant families
The Victoria Lily Primary School is 60 feet by 150 feet long and is 9,000 square feet with 12 classrooms , which can hold approximately 330 pupils
The school comprises an auditorium, a kitchenette , an air - conditioned ( AC ) staff room , a prin -
cipal’s office, a sick bay, four male washrooms and five female washrooms
There is also a wash room for Special Education Needs (SEN) learners and a ramp for wheelchair access
Each classroom has two ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers , there are also outlets for smart devices and each classroom has been outfitted with WIFI routers.
Tuschen, on Tuesday
“ So , if you look at Zeelugt , and Tuschen as combined areas, since we assumed office in the last three years, we have spent almost $ 4 billion in infrastructural upgrades in these two communities,” he said
Further, in addition to the newly commissioned primary school which will boost education delivery in the region , President Ali announced plans to construct two additional schools, one each at Crane and Nismes
which is in January ,” he said President Ali said that the school in Crane will be about 30,000 square foot and will be able to hold some 1,000 learners, while the new school at Nismes will be about 12,000 square feet and capable of holding some 600 learners.
Apart from this , the Head of State said that a recreation park is being built to support Tuschen and Zeelugt; this will contribute to the holistic development of children in the region
re migrants and migrants, are not locked out of the education system because of language barriers and deficiency,” he said
The Head of State related that because the region is now heavily and highly influenced by the influx of the migrant population and the re-immigration of Guyanese back into the country, the integration of Spanish is important Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, said that the school is timely for many reasons , with one particular factor being
THIRTY more Region Six police ranks will soon be better equipped to handle cases involving gender-based violence
They are presently participating in a three-day COPSQUAD training programme under the Spotlight Initiative in partnership with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Ministry of Home Affairs
The United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA ) is funding the training which is being held at the Police Academy at Adventure, East
Berbice-Corentyne According to Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus , the officers will be exposed to both theoretical and interactive training which will assist them to be on par with their international counterparts when dealing with domestic and gender-based violence cases, especially those involving women and girls
Having observed and being privy to the training being delivered, Bacchus is hoping that the programme continues so that all the ranks
under his charge can receive the training which will help to raise the standard of service provided to residents
“With the COPSQUAD training programme, we saw over 2,000 persons trained so far nationally , while in Region Six, 62 persons were trained so far and this batch of 30 will now take the total to 92 ranks of the total of 332 ranks We have a lot more work to do as it relates to gender - based violence and we are hoping the team can continue to be here so that all the ranks within Region Six will be trained so that we can have a stronger posture in terms of how to deal
with gender based violence in division number six,” he added
Meanwhile in an invited comment, one of the facilitators, Training Consultant
Dr Wanda Chesney, noted the significant increase in the number of cases of domestic violence
She said that for this reason, it is imperative that key stakeholders that interface with the public , especially the victims and survivors , are properly empowered to do so with tact and professionalism
“ Right now as we see it, one in every two women within our society would have been exposed to some form of violence either as a child or an adult It really requires we tackle it , we confront it and we deal with it in a way where persons are aware and where our officers are knowledgeable and empowered to treat with these cases expeditiously,” Chesney said
Speaking specifically about the training, she noted that it is all about educating and training the police officers so that they are able to treat the survivors of violence better
The training seeks to pro-
vide more insight into the Domestic Violence Act and provide a hands-on approach with different scenarios so that the officers can be able to assess and know what the best course of action for the victims is
“It’s about giving better service to the public and making the officers more aware of their roles and responsibilities because as you know, there is zero tolerance for domestic violence and gender-based violence generally.”
Further , she noted that persons visiting the force and interacting with the trained officers will notice the difference from prior visits
“With training provided , officers are going to be more service-oriented So apart from enhancing their knowledge base, their rapport will be different It will be better and therefore persons will have a better quality service and a better experience after having visited the force or the station,” she added.

“I left to go to the hospital and stopped at the scene I saw the motor cycle burning and a truck park in the corner”, he said Ramchand said his entire family is still in a state of shock
He described his son as a friendly and kind person
A project summary was recently submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for review
Owing to the demand for building stone , the company is targeting the growing needs by providing a modern quarry
According to Depoo: “The granite will be used for construction , road building, and the development of physical infrastructure in Guyana’s economic boom , made possible by the emerging oil industry,” adding: “ About 26,000 tonnes per month of granite are estimated to be produced from the mine.”
The summary highlighted that the quarry area is

The project summary further outlined that 10 to 12 trained individuals will be onsite full-time and on a rotational basis with the necessary accommodations near the operations areas Depoo Consulting Inc said that with this investment, they hope to meet the growing demand for aggregate domestically , as the economy continues to be boosted by increasing construction and infrastructure
Building on the progress made in 2022 through increased public and private investments , Guyana’s vibrant construction industry has been expanding even further in 2023
This growth is linked to massive government investments in new and improved roads and bridges, housing developments , educational and health facilities, agricultural infrastructure, and private sector investment in the oil and gas and hospitality industries.
GUYANA is known for its multiculturalism and religious freedom.
The Constitution of Guyana speaks to a secular state where religious freedoms are enshrined in law and where there is separation of the state from religion
There is complete freedom of worship and all religions and religious beliefs are treated equally There is no state-sponsored religion as is the case in some jurisdictions
What makes Guyana unique is the degree of religious tolerance among its citizens We are blessed with a country characterised by ethnic, cultural and religious diversity We not only respect, but we also celebrate our religious diversity as is manifested in the manner in which Guyanese from all religious beliefs celebrate each other’s religious festivities
Simply put, there is no place for cultural or religious bigotry The Constitution pro-
vides for freedom of religion and worship and the right to choose and change one’s religion
No citizen is compelled to take part in any religious education, ceremony or observance of a religion without the individual’s consent
The Constitution forbids taking an oath contrary to one’s religion
The Constitution mandates the establishment of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) with the aim of promoting ethnic harmony, eliminating ethnic discrimination and encouraging respect for religious diversity In fact, the ERC includes representatives of the country’s main religions, namely Christianity, Hinduism and Islam
Unfortunately, such principles and values are not universally observed and there are instances of ethnocentrist tendencies
Only recently President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali had cause to lash out at what he described as ‘Islamophobia,’ which he said
is a social malaise that fosters hatred, prejudice, bias and discrimination against persons based on their identification as Muslims This ‘social disease’, according to President Ali, could be countered through education and dialogue.
The above observations were made by President Ali during the opening ceremony of the two-day International Symposium on the History and Legacy of Muslims in the Caribbean
The conference was hosted by Guyana in collaboration with the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) and the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation
Guyana is home to a sizeable number of Muslims whose contributions to the economic, cultural and architectural landscape of the country have been significant Guyana now has the distinction of being the only country
in the Caribbean and the Americas with a Muslim Executive President This speaks volumes of our multiculturalism, religious diversity and tolerance
In the words of President Ali, ‘Guyana can be a ‘case study for the rest of the world where persons of different faiths make up the cabinet, the parliament and the seamless integration through which each supports the other is one that not only warrants attention, but warrants a case study.’
We are indeed fortunate to live in a society that is evolving to a new and higher levels of inclusivity and tolerance based on the “One Guyana” concept as envisaged by President Ali where every Guyanese, regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs or political affiliation is treated equally and is provided with an opportunity to grow and develop to the full extent of his/her potential
Dear Editor,
ONCE upon a time ( no , not the 91 nominated awards movie), is a famous opening line for fables , fictions and facts.
An unpopular leader (his colleagues slowly but surely abandoning him), impolite (has a problem with formal greeting), boyish ( throws tantrums ), lost ( going north instead of east to find the wisemen), tongue - twister ( claiming victory after losing the LGEs), unbalanced (sliding on slippery ground), confused (using 2019 statistics to reflect 2023 status ), bully (refusing to leave an executive meeting when Hoyte asked him to), among other negative introductions, once went to the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Phillip Davis, then incumbent Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
He reportedly went all the way to The Bahamas to complain about the Ali-led government, accusing them of being both racist and corrupt He thought he was going to meet someone who will see eye to eye with him
Not formally (uninvited), Mr Davis decided to accommodate him out of courtesy, showing respect for the man’s office (not necessarily for the person who colludes with his collaborators to engage and encourage attempts to influence the outcome of an election).
He forgot, his integrity preceded him The type who hides SoPs are not warmly
welcomed with open arms VP Jagdeo once said of him: “He is very upset about who holds dances on the ground and all of that A very petty-minded person But behind this, all is a narrative They are very sour, they don’t want Afro-Guyanese to make any progress, for the simple reason that they can go and campaign that the PPP has been discriminating.”
Prime Minister Davis was both amused and humoured, but with much discernment and diplomacy, he casually but carefully dismissed the disillusioned detractor , publicly saying firmly and finally, “In my interactions with Irfaan Ali, I find him to be a man of integrity.”
Prime Minister Davis was reported as stating that his impressions with President Ali and his government differ from the concerns raised by the trespasser
He added: “[He is] someone who we can join forces with on issues that impact particularly those of us in CARICOM [and] whenever he is called upon, he is there for CARICOM.”
The Prime Minister stressed: “I never got the impression of corruption, I never got the impression of racism.”
Nevertheless, the Prime Minister said he advised him to pen his concerns to the CARICOM Secretariat If warranted, CARICOM will deliberate over those concerns Did he dare put pen on paper to incriminate himself, fully knowing that there will be a permanent record on file about his lies?
All the Heads of CARICOM are patiently waiting to have a laugh at his expense The demented guy seems to forget dis time na lang time This time is not the time of the Kabaka when he spun wool over the eyes of his counterparts and they siding with him and his fallacies for policies
This federation is a breed of new leaders, now firmly attuned to transformation with a difference; collaboration without collusion, transparent with no room for riggers, harmony with honesty, co-operative and not subjective and a no-nonsense approach towards regional integration, justifiably, equitably and fraternally
That luckless leader who is food for a fairytale, the man doesn’t know his head from his hide apartheid? Here, in Guyana? He just made Sarah-Ann Lynch’s day! At least she will have something to smile about on her journey home and something funny to joke about in Capital Hill with Hakeem Jeffries
And now another PNC fabricator has joined the bandwagon to claim that “the Ali government, in many ways, is not different from the colonial masters and enslavers.” Careless talk is cheap but also bears serious consequences The man has just ridiculed his generations of strugglers and tainted his roots
His thoughtless verbatim has backfired and allowed Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips to expose his lapse by pointing out that the parliamentarian
has “trivialised the magnitude of slavery.”
Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, refers to President Dr Irfaan Ali as her brother President Ali, in fact, enjoys the warm cameraderie of all the Heads of CARICOM He is welcomed with open arms any time because he is no “sanctimonious gangster.”
No CARICOM leader will stand by idly and see the lying PNC try to degrade one of their own, who is supportive of ideals and principles of true democracy
Outgoing US Ambassador , the gracious, generous and glorifying Sarah-Ann Lynch laid the final nail in the PNC’s coffin, when she remarked: “We know positive change takes continued effort, but the United States government is proud to be a partner who is here to stay We will continue to partner with Guyana in the critical areas of governance , economic development and security and we will also continue to invest in Guyana’s growing and vital civil society.”
The US is here to stay and will not support riggers of any election and the PNC knows no other way to win The PNC can no longer “try a thing” to get into power through the back door
The US has turned her back on the PNC! The PNC is now a “once upon a time” fairytale.
MY daily offering since the day of Tuesday, March 3, 2020 when the general and regional elections were being derailed to erase the legal results, has had a number of underlying themes
One of these is that those who want to save Guyana’s democracy from political and intellectual assault, from class forces embedded in the privately owned media and civil society groups , must offer counter narratives
If we fail to offer counter narratives , then false constructs of these groups seep into people’s head and they become accepted I will devote an entire column to rebutting the editorial of the Stabroek News (SN) of Sunday, September 3 in which the meaning of democracy was corrupted
For now, it is important to note that a government can undermine democracy A political biased media landscape can do terrible damage to democracy The judiciary, if not neutral , can weaken democracy The business class can set about hurting democratic foundations
State security , opposed to the government, can shake the foundations on which democracy rests My published research into the Buxton mayhem – 2002-2006- can testify to that
Do not be fooled if you are a young mind that it is only the government that can ruin things in a country The mainstream media and now social media are powerful tools that can endanger social stability
In this country, the privately owned mainstream media and their cohorts in civil society pose a clear and present danger to democracy. A recent poll by credible and eminent institutions in the US reveal that American democracy is threatened by the changing nature of the media, a sentiment repeated by Barack Obama in an interview with CBS
If we did not offer counter - narratives , democracy in this country since 2020
would have died already
Here is an impeccable example of the need to have counter narratives
The anti-government organisation, Red Thread (RT) published a statement through SN that a well-known businessman and his son sent a hit man , who was paid 10 million dollars, to harm them and that it was Mikhail Rodrigues, alias, Guyanese Critic that informed them of the impending attack
This story had all the makings of a publicity conspiracy to attract attention to a faded, jaded superstar of yesteryear Examination of the story made no sense, and Rodrigues is suing RT since he denies informing RT of any such imminent attack
When analysis was put to the exclamation of RT, it fell flat on its face; the story died immediately
No one in his / her right mind believes RT or no one in this country believes anyone wants to attack RT because no one knows what RT does to warrant a businessman and his son paying someone 10 million dollars to harm the group
How counter - narratives are important can be seen in the fact that SN and civil society groups dropped the story and not one opposition party followed up on RT’s claim Counter-narratives exposed the comicality in RT’s outcry. It is in this context I will soon apply my mind to the last Sunday editorial of SN
For now , the question must be answered as to why Joel Bhagwandin cannot get one, not even one, letter published in the Kaieteur News (KN) and why SN informed Professor Randy Persaud that his letters cannot be carried because they attack civil society organisations SN specifically mentioned, the entity named Article 13
What is the explanation for these two decisions? Glen Lall, owner of KN, knew he was entering politics and selected criticising the oil industry as his platform Lall
has a number of individuals, the likes of which include Janet Bulkan and Melinda Janki, to enhance his claims But Bhagwandin , a fine , astute mind that is excellent in financial studies, stands in his way.
Bhagwandin offers brilliant counter - narratives about the oil industry that if Lall allows his paper to carry Bhagwandin, it would destroy Lall ’ s credibility Lall , of course , is unable to comprehend the reality that Bhagwandin has other avenues to succeed in his analyses and he does
Across to SN, that newspaper works closely in hand with civil society groups that have a frenetic anti-government agenda (for the latest take on such groups, the column by Ralph Ramkarran in last Sunday edition of SN).
Professor Randy Persaud provides a strong intellectual counter-weight to these civil society groups He writes with strong intellectual incisiveness. He literally exposes the hypocrisy and hidden anti-government agenda of these people
In other words, his counter - narratives demolish the credibility of these so called neutral civil society entities SN decides it would be better to lock him out rather than have him exposing its acolytes in the Mulatto/ Creole class.
ATTORNEY-GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C., has accused former Alliance For Change (AFC)
Leader Khemraj Ramjattan of using sugar workers to further his political agenda
Nandlall made those remarks on Tuesday during his weekly Facebook programme , Issues in the News , during which he shed light on the contentious history between the APNU + AFC , and sugar workers , with allegations of broken promises and neglect
“From the moment the APNU+AFC got a one-seat majority in the National Assembly after the 2011 elections, they started to attack the sugar workers In fact, it is sugar workers, I believe, that’s allowed them to get the one-seat majority
“ It is the sugar workers that allowed them to get that one-seat majority Khemraj Ramjattan went into the sugar belt , they went into the order lines,
and they used to speak to the workers and made all sorts of promises to them And the workers believed them and gave them the votes,” Nandlall said
The Attorney - General further detailed that despite the promises made by Ramjattan and his party during the 2015 elections, the coalition government closed multiple sugar estates, leaving thousands of workers jobless
“
got a one-seat majority, and one of the first things that they began to do when they got that one-seat majority was to cut all subsidies to sugar,” Nandlall lamented
He highlighted instances where Ramjattan, as part of the APNU+AFC government , allegedly promised support for the sugar industry and assured workers that it was “too big to fail.”
However , Nandlall contended that within the first year of the coalition government’s tenure, they closed the Wales Estate , leaving over 2,100 sugar workers unemployed Subsequently , Enmore , Rose Hall, and Skeldon estates were also shuttered, leaving over 7,000 workers jobless “ They promised them severance which they never paid GuySuCo ( Guyana Sugar Corporation) never paid,” Nandlall recalled
had a profound impact on the lives of the sugar workers Nandlall said that some workers were driven to desperate measures as they struggled to provide for their families
He said that while in opposition , the People ’ s Progressive Party made a decision that if the party got into government, it would pay the severed sugar workers a $250,000 grant
Instead, they had continuously worked, earning more than those who were laid off
They [ APNU + AFC ]
He continued, recalling the legal battle fought on behalf of sugar workers seeking severance pay He accused the APNU + AFC government of resisting the
workers ’ claims in court , causing significant delays in receiving their rightful compensation “ They defended the case , causing the matter to delay even more the judges had to rule , and ruled against them they didn’t consent to the judgment They didn’t pay We had to go to arguments, and then the judges ruled in our favour,” Nandlall said
He highlighted that the delayed legal proceedings
“These are workers who were dismissed since 2017 They haven’t worked since 2017 Those who are protesting never got dismissed and those people who got dismissed in 2017 were paid $250,000 We already rehired 1,500 from 2020 to 2022 And now we are hiring 1100 more for Rose Hall estates,” he said
Turning his attention to the current protests by sugar workers who are now demanding severance pay, Nandlall argued that these workers were not dismissed in 2017, as their counterparts who received the grants
“Now, because we are hiring those people, this set who were working all the time , now want compensation They want severance you can’t get severance if you have not been severed They were working This is just envy And that is what the protest is,” Attorney-General said
Nandlall labelled Ramjattan’s involvement with the protesting sugar workers as politically motivated opportunism
“...That is why Ramjattan is rushing down there like a sympathising Judas And Ramjattan will stand with them only because it suits him politically
“The first opportunity he gets to kick them, he will do that. The first opportunity he gets , he is going to ill - treat them , and they will still have to come back to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP),” he said.

“And I think companies like that what they ’ re doing is they’re coming here, they ’ re doing their homework, they’re coming here to explore Guyana and they’re listening to the people and government and others in their conversations and that’s a more encouraging thing to do and that’s resulting in that case real deals,” she said Furthermore, she stated that there are businesses interested in road infrastruc-
ture projects , and others that are already working on building hotels
Further, the Ambassador said that agriculture is also an area that the U S has been exploring in Guyana
“There are a lot of tools that are needed to modernise the agriculture sector here and there are a lot of companies that have those tools A lot of US companies have those tools so they have been here and they will continue to explore ,” she

IN response to the alarming surge in excessive speeding and reckless driving on the nation's roadways, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has issued a stern warning that reckless drivers will be held accountable and required to cover the cost of replacement and repairs to damaged property.
In recent months, the nation has witnessed a surge in accidents leading to significant loss of lives and damage to public infrastructure. Minister Edghill has acknowledged the growing problem, stating: "We
cannot turn a blind eye to the rising destruction of public property resulting from reckless driving on our roadways."
The minister vowed to take decisive action to address this issue, including the introduction of stricter fines and penalties for those responsible for such destruction. In cases of reckless driving leading to damage of public property, drivers will be held financially responsible for the cost of replacement and repairs.
“It is imperative that we send a clear message to all citizens that reck-
less behaviour will not be tolerated. When individuals cause damage to public property, they
SOME 244 persons in Region Six , including 24 , will over the next three months be trained to become heavy - duty equipment operators.
The programme was launched on Monday. Participants will be taught at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute ( NATI ), Hampshire Civic Centre and the Upper Corentyne Training Institute
These three locations will cover New Amsterdam / Canje, Lower Corentyne and the Upper Corentyne
Upon completion of the programme , the participants will be certified and li-
where the economy is going -- oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, mining, construction, logistics, manufacturing – we have enough skilled labour to meet the needs of that economy that is emerging and at the same time we want to ensure that every family has one, two or three persons with relevant skills to be able to get a decent job and to earn a decent income and to live a decent and fulfilling, rewarding and happy life,” the minister said
He used the opportunity to urge the trainees to remain committed and diligent during the course
Thus far for 2023, 279 persons including 42 females have been trained at a cost of $237 million Additionally 107 apprentices are presently involved in six programmes at the GuySuCoTraining Centre Another 282 persons are being trained in six different programmes in New Amsterdam
“What is happening here today is an addition to what is happening and has been happening since we took office It ’ s not a start of something, it’s a continuation of something”, he said While underscoring the importance of being multiskilled, Minister Hamilton also announced that two programmes -- tractor driver
and forklift operator – will soon start
The regional chairman in his remarks said that there is a considerable amount of equipment in the region, but not enough persons to operate them He emphasised that because of this, the training of over 200 operators is very significant.

Minister Singh , while speaking at the Upper Corentyne launch, reflected on the challenges the area is facing due to the closure of the Skeldon Sugar Estate
He said that government having recognised those
challenges is committed to creating opportunities to ensure that every Guyanese has an opportunity to earn a decent income “
We as a government , are committed to doing what is necessary First of all to repair the devastating damage that was done to the Upper Corentyne and in particular to restore and reignite economic activities

With the developments and the emerging energy sector, a skilled labour force is paramount , hence the government’s commitment to providing training opportunities for all Guyanese
“ I want you to understand and situate this training course within the context of government ’ s broader policy agenda .We want to make sure that given

Meanwhile , Minister Hamilton said the programme is one of many that’s ongoing in the region and throughout the country
He related that over the past three years , 10,000 persons have undergone training in various skills as compared to an average of 1,300 - 1,500 per year under the previous administration
Regarding Region Six, Minister Hamilton disclosed that in 2021 , 428 persons including 249 females were trained at a cost of $ 139 million
In 2022 , training 968 persons including 630 females cost the government $338 million

must bear the financial burden of rectifying it,” the minister said while stressing the seriousness of these measures.
The move to hold reckless drivers financially accountable for the destruction of pub-
lic property aligns with the ministry's broader efforts to promote road safety and reduce accidents. It also serves as a deterrent to those who engage in risky driving behaviours.
The minister reaffirmed his ministry’s
commitment to ensuring safer roadways for all citizens and visitors while protecting valuable public assets.
He also voiced deep concern over the irresponsible behaviour exhibited by many drivers, raising questions about
the societal cost of development.
Startling statistics from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) revealed a troubling trend. From January 1 to August 28, 2023, 109 people lost their lives in 91 accidents, a significant increase compared to the same period in 2022.
“The government's transformative agenda includes expanding main roads and infrastructure to accommodate growth in population and vehicle traffic. This is to ensure the safety of every citizen and visitor,” Minister Edghill said.
Edghill underscored that while the government is taking steps to
improve infrastructure, citizens themselves are the country's greatest assets.
The National Assembly recently passed a regulatory framework for the use of electric bikes. It will address the alarming increase in road fatalities and incidents involving electric bikes. Meanwhile, in November 2022, the National Assembly passed the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2022 to promote and enforce safe driving.
One of the recent incidents that prompted more action was an accident which resulted in the death of four teenagers. The driver of the
car the teenagers were in was reportedly speeding when he collided with a parked truck and a concrete fence at Canal #2 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD), Region Three.
The victims of this devastating accident were identified as the driver, 17-year-old Daveanand Singh, 19-yearold Amiesha Jaikaran, 18-year-old Divyanie Narine and 19-year-old Daniel Tirbeni. Further, 10-monthold Zainad Boyer recently died in an accident at Dennis Street, Sophia. The infant’s father was reportedly speeding when he collided with another car.

THE community support officers (CSOs) who were reinstated by the government in 2020 are helping to cushion the heavy workload in Amerindian communities.
This was expressed by several Toshaos and Chairpersons of various Indigenous Community District Councils (CDC) during the five-day National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference.
Toshao of Akawini, Region Two, Rudolph Wilson said the CSOs are going above and beyond.
“For my village, we got
12 CSOs and I could tell you they are doing well. They are going to the length and breadth of my community to perform census work,”
he said.
Wilson added that the CSOs are even working to professionally establish themselves in the commu-
nity health centres through programmes that are provided by the government.
Another Toshao, James Davis from Tiger Pond, Region Nine was lucky to get a total of 15 CSOs. He also applauded the CSOs whom he described as ‘hard workers’.
“We have CSOs in the different sectors such as the education sector, health sector, infrastructure, and GWI etc…They are a real help to the village council…because they have taken off some burdens from my hands,” Davis said emphatically.
Meanwhile, the CDC
THE Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) has recorded a successful year so far, as the authority continues to display its immense capabilities in not only enhanc-
ing Guyana as a whole, but in particular the tourism industry.
Blossoming like a flower, the GTA has achieved myriad accomplishments within August, such as
granting the official GTA licence to 148 tourism accommodation establishments, tour operators and tour guides, among others.
According to a statement from
the GTA, 33 properties have been officially entered into the GTA’s Cricket Carnival Bed & Breakfast Property database. Some of these establishments include: Amari’s
Chair of Wauna, Region One, Ammon Thom stated that the CSO’s are showing good leadership in the communities.
He added that they are able to take on tasks that have been assigned to them.
“So, the CSO programme, for me, is a very good programme because it cushions some of the areas in my village,” the young chairman said.
Similar sentiments were also shared by Roxanne Skeeke, another CDC Chairperson, from the village of
Barabina, Region One.
“They are working handin-hand with the council. Where and when we have projects, they are placed there to assist,” Skeeke pointed out.
Further, the Toshaos and Chairpersons expressed much gratitude to the government for dispatching the CSOs to the various Amerindian villages as they noted that these persons are major contributors to development in the Indigenous communities. (DPI)

The tourism authority related that the property owners and managers benefitted from a series of training initiatives and support to improve their levels of service.
The GTA said that to date, 148 tourism accommodation establishments, tour operators and tour guides have received their official GTA licence. This list includes 12 tourism accommodation establishments, 10 interior lodges and resorts, 31 tour operators and 76 tour guides.
Among the numerous licensees are 592 Tours, Wild Tales and Evergreeen Adventures.
Additionally, in August, the GTA facilitated five training sessions for the tourism and hospitality sectors, inclusive of virtual food-safety training, quality-service training, tour guide and interpretive training at Iwokrama and a renewable energy workshop.
In the area of product development, the GTA has scored several achievements.
The GTA stated that between August 9-24, their product-development team, alongside two foreign consultants and one local consultant from SOFRECO, facilitated Mission One in the Rupununi as part of an EU-funded project - Scaling Up Community Led Tourism Development In Guyana.
The GTA also launched a Tourism Product Development Playbook. According to Director of the GTA, Kamrul Baksh, the manual is just a component in a much bigger picture of the GTA and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce
Moreover, through the Guyana Development Initiative during August, the GTA hosted Glenn Jampol, an eco-tourism consultant and owner of Costa Rica’s luxury eco-boutique hotel -Finca Rosa Blanca.
“During this trip, Mr. Jampol prioritised meeting with owners/ managers of eco-lodges to comprehensively assess the locations and provide guidance on implementing the global best practices in managing a lodge, focusing on sustainable practices,” the GTA statement read.
Targeting the enhancement of data-collection procedures within the tourism sector, the GTA’s Statistics and Research Team has embarked on a project to gather Occupancy Data from Tourism Accommodation Establishments in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, and 10.
Notably, more than 50 establishments have been engaged, specifically in Regions Four, Five, and Six, coupled with the enormous support received from various stakeholders.

THE Public Utilities Commission (PUC) announced the impending launch of Number Portability, a pivotal development in the country's telecommunications sector.
This initiative is part of Guyana's broader efforts to liberalize the telecom industry, which began on October 5, 2020. The liber-
tral database of telephone numbers and overseeing the technical aspects of number porting upon consumer requests.
alization promises a future of improved service quality, competitive rates, and better options for consumers.
The PUC noted that Number Portability is at the forefront of these liberalization efforts, as it seeks to foster competition and empower consumers.
With the implementation of Number Portability, subscribers will gain the ability to switch telecom service providers while retaining their current telephone numbers.
As the regulatory authority for the telecommunications sector in Guyana, the Commission holds the responsibility for overseeing the process of implementing Number Portability. To this end, the Commission has established a dedicated Number Portability Working Group (NPWG) to manage the process. This working group, chaired by a Commission member, includes representatives from all major telecom service providers in the country, namely GTT Inc., Digicel, and ENet, along with the Telecommunications Agency.
The Telecommunications Agency, responsible for processing telecom licences, issuing phone numbers, and regulating radio communication spectrum usage, plays a pivotal role in this initiative.
Central to the technical aspects of Number Portability is the Clearinghouse service provider. Porting XS, a Netherlands-based Clearinghouse provider now licensed in Guyana, is responsible for administering Number Portability services to telecom providers. This involves managing the cen-
Although the Commission had originally anticipated an earlier launch date for Number Portability, delays in licensing the Clearinghouse provider and the completion of rigorous testing processes, including numerous porting tests among service providers, impacted several key milestones.
Nevertheless, the PUC noted that live testing of numbers among service providers is now a daily occurrence. This testing phase is a complex process that encompasses interconnecting with the Clearinghouse provider, exchanging telephone numbers for porting tests, and certifying each completed test.
Additionally, configuring call routing during number porting and testing short message signal (SMS) procedures are all part of the foundation for a seamless Number Portability regime in Guyana.
The Commission reassures the public that it remains actively engaged in monitoring each testing phase and is fully committed to the successful implementation of Number Portability.
Acknowledging the significance of telephone numbers in today's digital age, the Commission understands that assigned numbers, particularly mobile ones, have become synonymous with personal identity and recovery contacts for social media and other electronic platforms.
As the Commission strives to make Number Portability a reality in Guyana, the PUC stated that the public can rest assured that regular updates will be provided, including the official launch date. The initiative is expected to bring new opportunities, improved services, and greater choice for telecom users in the country.

ON Tuesday, at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) defeated West Demerara by 37 runs to win the Demerara leg of the Republic Bank/Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Under-23 50-over tournament and book their national playoff spot against Albion who won Berbice’s leg.
Under the watchful eyes of rising star coach, Darien Best, DCC amassed 207 runs batting first. Indrajeet Nanan top scored for the winners with 55 runs (61 balls), stroking 10 boundaries inclusive of eight 4’s.
DCC’s skipper, Nikosi Beaton hit 43 runs (from 54 balls) with three 4’s and two 6’s while Ezekiel Wilson’s quick-fire 30 runs (26 balls) were both instrumental to the Queenstown club reaching the competitive figure.
Ushardeva Balgobin took a five-wicket haul for West Demerara from 10 overs, conceding just 39 runs inclusive of two maidens.
In reply, West Demerara’s score of 170 was the most conceded by DCC in the tournament thus far but it was not enough. Sachin Balgobin belted 75 runs in a losing effort. His innings comprised eight 4’s and one 6.
DCC’s Daniel Mootoo led the bowling attack with three wickets for 29 runs from his 10 while Kareem Whitney and Jonathan Van Lange grabbed two wickets each.
In an invited comment, DCC’s coach, Best, shared with Chronicle Sport that, “To get to this point it wasn't one player. In every game thus far a player has stepped up. It has been a good collaborative effort.”
“Our game plan is to be aggressive and we stuck to it although we batted subpar total at the top, the middle order really helped us get to a competitive score.”
Meanwhile, DCC’s captain, Beaton, highlighted that, “It’s a great group of guys. Very talented. On paper our skill set are better that any opposition and today we came out and did what mattered most, we delivered.”
“I am hoping to get some guys from my team into the inter-county and national-side and the only way to ensure that is by continuing to win.”

American teenager Coco Gauff stormed into the US Open semi-finals for the first time with a superb, dominant victory over Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko.
Gauff, 19, won 6-0 6-2 in 67 minutes to record her best run at the tournament.
The American dropped only seven points in a 20-minute first-set demolition and then claimed a closer second set. She will play 10th seed
Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic or Romania's Sorana Cirstea, the 30th seed, in the semi-finals on Thursday.
"It feels great, I'm so happy," said Gauff. "I lost in the quarter-finals stage last year and wanted to do better this year. I have a long way to go but I'm happy and will get ready for the next one.
"I didn't feel comfortable at all the whole match, even at match point. She has the
ability to come back no matter the scoreline so I was just trying to play every ball and hit it deep. I was trying my best to be aggressive when
I could.
"She has had a great tournament and I speak and get along with her well off the court.
"The defence has always been there, but I've been improving my offence and that's showing on the court.
"I played well. This is my shortest match of the tournament by far so maybe I will get back and hit the [practice] courts."
Gauff, aiming to win her first Grand Slam title after losing to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final, had seen three of her first four matches at this year's US Open go to a deciding set.
But after only nine minutes of action in Tuesday's
opening match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gauff had raced into a 3-0 lead with a double break of serve, as Ostapenko, who knocked out world number one Swiatek in the last 16, made 10 unforced errors.
Gauff did not lose a point on her second serve in the opening set and then broke the 20th seed's serve in the first game of the second set. Ostapenko did immediately break back for her first game of the match, only for Gauff to regain control a few minutes later.
Quinton de Kock will retire from ODI cricket after the World Cup in India but is likely to continue playing T20Is for South Africa until the 2024 World Cup.
Although no reason was given for de Kock’s sudden decision to step away from the fifty-over format, less than two years after giving up Test cricket, ESPNcricinfo understands that his availability for South Africa was becoming an issue as he seeks to get more T20 league contracts around the world.
The situation came to a head when de Kock was picked up by Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s BBL and committed to playing for them between December 10 and January 5.
That meant he was going
to make himself unavailable for the home white-ball series against India, which
consists of three T20Is and three ODIs, from December 10 to 21.
On Monday, when CSA held talks with de Kock, sources told ESPNcricinfo that since de Kock remains centrally contracted, CSA expected him to be available for the T20Is.
By Tuesday, de Kock’s ODI retirement took him out of the picture for the ODIs against India.
He also appeared to have reached a compromise with CSA that will allow him to go to the BBL and still play for South Africa at the T20 World Cup on the understanding that he is getting some game time –albeit not with the national side. (ESPNcricinfo).
DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka, (CMC) – Opener Pulindu Perera struck a half-century as Sri Lanka Under-19s made a measured start on the opening day of the first Youth “Test” against West Indies Under-19s here Tuesday.
Following a rain delay which resulted in only 38 overs at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, the hosts reached 163 for three at the close, with Perera top-scoring with 71.
Captain Sineth Jayawardene chipped in with 34 while Ravishan Nethsara struck 31, as Sri Lanka Under-19s batted well in partnerships after winning the toss.
Once the weather cleared, Perera took the initiative in stitching together two successive half-century stands to keep the visitors starved of major success.
The 17-year-old, who belted 155 in the final Youth ODI against West Indies U19s last week, again scored quickly, striking eight fours and two sixes in a 66-ball knock as he posted 64 for the first wicket with Jayawardene and 57 for the second wicket with Nethsara.
Jayawardene, another left-hander, scored at a run-a-ball with seven fours while Nethsara, in contrast, produced a patient innings lasting 81 balls and including three fours.
Once Perera fell, the right-handed Nethsara held the innings together and guided Sri Lanka U19s safely to the close.
Rahul has been named in India's Cricket World Cup squad, having been out of action for four months.
The 31-year-old has not played any competitive cricket since suffering a thigh injury during an Indian Premier League match on 1 May.
He is set to join the national team in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup's Super Four stage, which starts on Wednesday.
The World Cup, in India, starts on 5 October, with the hosts chasing a first title since 2011.
Rahul will be in contention along with fellow wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, who hit 82 against Pakistan in the group stages of the Asia Cup on Saturday.
"We have said earlier that problems like these are good, that boys are fighting for spots," said
captain Rohit Sharma.
"We will have to see who is in form and who is the opposition to face. All this will be calculated and the best 11 will be picked.
"For Ishan's confidence, the last match he played was brilliant - under pressure, batting at number five for the first time, [being a] left-hander gives us another dimen -
sion."
Jasprit Bumrah is included in the 15-man squad after recovering from a back injury that kept him out of the game for almost a year, but off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is absent while Rishabh Pant is also out as he continues his recovery from injuries sustained in a car crash last December.
India World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-capt), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.
ENGLAND were convincingly beaten by six wickets by New Zealand in the fourth T20 at Trent Bridge as the Black Caps fought back to draw the series 2-2.
The tourists were always ahead of the rate in pursuit of 176 and completed the chase with 16 balls to spare.
Opener Tim Seifert provided a quick start with 48 from 32 balls and Glenn Phillips took on the charge with 42 from 25.
Only 19-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who dismissed Seifert and Phillips in his 2-27, was able to slow the flow of runs.
England failed to capitalise on their own rapid rapid start provided by Jonny Bairstow's 73 from 41 balls as they fell away and posted only 175-8, having been 63-0 after six overs.
Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone both failed to cut loose in making 26 and Harry Brook missed the chance to
further press his case for a World Cup selection U-turn by holing out for four from eight.
With the World Cup a month away, Bairstow added further worry by not taking to the field because of right shoulder pain.
The preparation for England's defence of the 50over title ramps up when the sides meet in the first of four one-day internationals in Cardiff on Friday.
Bowlers unable to stop New Zealand's charge England started this fourmatch series with two dominant victories. The Black Caps' wins in the final two matches have been equally as one-sided.
England's score felt below par on a small ground and so it proved.
New Zealand spinners
Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi changed the momentum with 3-30 and 2-21 but, in contrast, Adil Rashid was hit for two fours and a six by Seifert in his first five balls.
Ahmed bowled wellhe had Seifert caught and bowled and Phillips taken in the leg-side deep - but New Zealand managed a short boundary better and England's seamers, plus Rashid and Moeen Ali, went the distance.
Bairstow's injury, which he played down afterwards, meant captain Jos Buttler, who had originally rested himself, took to the field with the gloves.
He will hope for more consistency in the ODI series with Joe Root and Ben Stokes among those set to return.
Brook misses chance to impress
When Bairstow peppered the leg side and struck five fours and six sixes, England looked on course for 200.
Instead, the spinners stemmed the flow before the seamers came back with far more control. Will Jacks missed another chance to impress as opener when nicking behind off Sodhi for 15 in
the seventh over. Bairstow then hit Santner to long-on in the 12th.
That meant Brook joined Malan in the middle, but the righter-hander struggled for eight balls before he skied a catch off Sodhi to deep square leg.
Given he is not in the ODI squad, it could be Brook's last chance to impress before the World Cup while it also gave Malan, one of those at risk if he is recalled, the opportunity to cement his case.
Malan, though, could not find top gear, despite hitting four fours. He was caught taking on the leg-side boundary, as was Moeen Ali and Sam Curran for one and five respectively.
Livingstone swung hard but only hit two boundaries at the end. New Zealand only conceded 38 from the final five overs with two boundaries - Tim Southee and Matt Henry particularly impressive.(BBC Sport)
JORGE Vilda, Spain’s Women’s World Cup-winning head coach, has been sacked amid the ongoing Luis Rubiales scandal.
Montse Tome has been named as his successor, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
Spain’s win was overshadowed by the country’s football federation president Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso, which she said was not consensual.
Most of Vilda’s coaching staff resigned and 81 players refused to play for Spain in the aftermath. Rubiales has refused to resign but has been provisionally suspended by Fifa, football’s world governing body.
In a statement, Spanish federation the RFEF did not give a specific reason for Vilda’s dismissal, saying he had been “a promoter of the values of respect and sportsmanship in football”.
However, the RFEF has been exploring whether it could sack 42-year-old Vilda – considered a close ally of Rubiales – since last week.
The RFEF called the move “one of the first renewal measures” announced by interim president Pedro Rocha, who has taken on the role while Rubiales is suspended by Fifa.
Vilda was spotted applauding Rubiales at the RFEF’s extraordinary general assembly earlier in August – when Rubiales repeatedly insisted he would not resign and said he would offer Vilda a new deal – though he has since criticised his behaviour.
“The RFEF appreciates [Vilda’s] work at the head of the national team and in his functions as the head of sports for the women’s teams, as well as the successes achieved during his time crowned with the recent achievement of the World Cup,” said the RFEF.
“We value his impeccable personal and sporting conduct, being a key piece in the notable growth of women’s football in Spain.”
Tome, a former midfielder who won four caps for Spain, was part of Vilda’s coaching team.
The 41-year-old will lead Spain into Uefa Women’s Nations League qualifying later this month, with fixtures against Sweden and Switzerland on 22 and 26 September. (BBC)

NOVAK Djokovic reached a record 47th men's Grand Slam semi-final with a straight-set win over Taylor Fritz at the US Open.
The Serb, 36, prevailed 6-1 6-4 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to continue his pursuit of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic achieved his victory despite temporarily appearing to struggle with the heat and humidity in New York.
The three-time champion faces Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton in the last four.
The winner of Tuesday's all-American quarter-final between Tiafoe and Shelton will now carry the host nation's hopes of a first men's singles champion for 20 years following world number nine Fritz's defeat.
Djokovic maintained his perfect record in US Open quarter-finals - with this his 13th win in a row at that stage - to overtake Roger Federer for most Grand Slam men's semi-final appearances. The
victory also moved him within two wins of equalling Australian Margaret Court's tally of major singles triumphs. Djokovic overcomes physical issues to reach semi-finals
Despite an admirable effort, Fritz could not earn any reward as Djokovic delivered a devastating performance in hot temperatures at Flushing Meadows.
The American, 25, had a break point in the opening game and showed he would not be overawed by Djokovic when he broke back in game three.
However, Djokovic subdued the growing optimism among the home crowd, efficiently closing out the first set with four successive games.
Despite appearing to struggle with the conditions amid a heatwave in New York - the three-time US Open champion crouched down following a couple of points - Djokovic was able to assert himself in set two.
The second seed held firm under pressure, further frustrating Fritz by saving
It did not take long for the hosts to see off their opponents, with victory coming just 15 minutes into the day’s play when Jordan Clark bowled last man Chris Rushworth for six with the last ball of his second over.
In Division Two, Leicestershire kept themselves in the hunt for promotion with an eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire.
After Rishi Patel and Sol Budinger lost their wickets early in the piece, an unbeaten partnership between Colin Ackermann (93) and skipper Lewis Hill (62) which yielded 161 runs guided the hosts to their 168-run target inside 42 overs at Uptonsteel Grace Road.
The Foxes still have work to do but have a game in hand away to Sussex next week, victory there could set up an intriguing final couple of games in which Leicestershire and their chief promotion rivals Worcestershire both face the same opponents – Yorkshire and Durham – in their last two fixtures.
Worcestershire, who sit one place above Leicestershire, strengthened their grip on second place with an 80-run win defeat of Glamorgan at New Road. Their fifth victory of the campaign came with more than a day to spare and handed Glamorgan their first loss in the competition this season. (Sportsmax)
four break points for a 3-1 lead.
Overcoming the physical issues he had faced, Djokovic would not falter and lost just one point in his next three service games.
The third set was by no means straightforward. But, fuelled by the frustration of seeing Fritz immediately break back for 4-4 and angered by the behaviour of an individual in the crowd, Djokovic responded in typical fashion and broke again.
To his credit, Fritz pushed his opponent all the way and reached break point, but Djokovic clinched his second match point after two hours and 35 minutes on court.
Djokovic & Alcaraz remain on collision course
This was Djokovic's fourth straight-set win at this year's US Open - although his only scare was a major one, when he was forced to come
back from two sets down to overcome compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round.
Victory over Fritz extended his dominant head-to-head record over the American to 8-0. He has won both previous meetings with Tiafoe but never faced 20-year-old Shelton.
Having missed last year's tournament because of his vaccination status - and therefore with no ranking points to defend in New YorkDjokovic is guaranteed a return to the top of the world rankings after the tournament.
And he remains on course for another epic showdown with top seed Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final, just two months after edging a thrilling five-set Wimbledon final against the 20-year-old.
THE Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has officially selected a five-member roster that will compete at the impending Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, from October 20th–November 5th.
The fight squad, which is one of the largest in recent participation in the competition, comprises Desmond Amsterdam [79 KG], Keevin Allicock [57 KG], Emmanuel Pompey [92 KG], Joel Williamson [63.5 KG], and Alesha Jackman [66 KG]. The Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole, will oversee the technical staff, which also comprises Cuban coach Franciso Roldan.
Boxing is slated to be staged from October 21st–27th at the La Reina Community Sports Center. It will serve as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, as the two respective divisional finalists will secure automatic berths.
GBA Technical Director Poole said, "Training has officially commenced since last Monday, though it has been a
continuous process. They are working, and though it might not be at full intensity, they will eventually get to that required level, as we get closer to the tournament. Training occurs daily, that is, Monday to Friday from 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. at the Andre "Six Head" Lewis gym in Albouystown.
We also train on Sundays. I think it is a great opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. While they have other qualifiers that will occur, this is an easy chance
for the fighters to qualify. It's a good opportunity, and the boxers should make the most of it."
Meanwhile, GBA President Steve Ninvalle said, "This is the beginning of an important journey in our objective to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France. Traditionally, boxing has flown the Golden Arrowhead with aplomb at this regional juncture. As such, the GBA has formulated a rigorous training regimen to achieve its ambitions."
"International competition remains a significant element of our developmental agenda. The Pan American Games are at the forefront of this marriage given its sporting significance to the region," he further said.
Guyana’s previous participation in this prestigious event occurred at the 2019 edition. Allicock was boxing’s solitary representative in Lima, Peru.
Clive Atwell secured Guyana's last medal in the discipline of boxing at the 2007 edition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He won bronze in the 54-kg segment. Prior to the aforementioned, Guyana won two bronze medals in the 1991 Games in Havana, Cuba, via Poole [81 KG] and Stephan Rose [51 KG].
Overall, Guyana has won one silver and seven bronze medals in the history of the event, which started in 1951. This is second only to Jamaica in the English-speaking Caribbean, which has captured a total of 11.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Guyana Amazon Warriors opened their account in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League with a comfortable 21-run victory over Trinbago Knight Riders.
The visitors rattled up 132 all out in the final over after choosing to bat first at Queen’s Park Oval here Tuesday, before restricting TKR to 111 for one off their 20 overs.
Amazon Warriors had lost both their previous matches to Barbados Royals in the first leg of the tournament in Bridgetown last week.
New Zealander Sophie Devine top-scored with 48 from 39 deliveries in a Play-
er-of-the-Match effort, providing the early momentum for Amazon Warriors – first in a 36-run, opening stand with countrywoman Suzie Bates (16) and then in a critical 56-run, second wicket partnership with captain Stafanie Taylor.
Devine counted four fours and a six in her knock while Taylor struck four fours in a measured 29-ball innings.
West Indies off-spinner Anisa Mohammed (4-28) and England Marie Kelly (4-30) finished with four wickets apiece.
In reply, former West Indies batsman Deandra Dottin top-scored with a 19-ball 35 in her first outing in the tour-
nament, but lacked support and TKR’s challenge fizzled out.
At one stage, they were 46 for one in the 10th over but with the required run rate rising, the innings collapsed underneath the pressure built up.
Entering at number five, Dottin counter-attacked superbly with four fours and two sixes but her demise in the 17th over with 35 runs required, erased any chance of a TKR victory.
Off-spinners Shreyanka Patil (2-15) and Karishma Ramharack (2-16), along with the new-ball pair of Devine (2-27) and Shabnim Ismail (2-29), all finished with two wickets each.
