Gov’t holds stakeholder consultations on second Voluntary National Review of UN's SDGs

— Dr Singh reaffirms commitment to advancing implementation of Agenda 2030

SENIOR Finance Minister Dr Ashni K Singh and the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (in conjunction with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation), led Guyana's Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) Consultation on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal.

The VNR reports Guyana’s progress in effecting its Sustainable Development Agenda. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines a transformative vision for economic, social and environmental development.

The engagement presented an opportunity for government, private sector, and NGO stake-

holders to report on and provide feedback on the progress made thus far on Goal Six - Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal Seven - Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal Nine - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 17 - Partnerships

for the Goals.

Speaking at the forum, Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips, who delivered the feature address, said government is committed to attaining the SDGs.

“We recognize the importance of the SDGs and their aim to put a global end to poverty, to

protect the planet and to ensure peace and prosperity for all. These goals are crucial to building a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations. Ladies and gentlemen, the SDGs are important because they address some of the most pressing challenges fac-

ing our world today-climate change, poverty, inequality and conflict are just a few examples that these SDGs aim to tackle by setting clear targets and mobilizing resources. The SDGs provide a roadmap for governments, businesses and civil society to work together towards a common goal,” the Prime Minister noted.

He added that the importance of the SDGs also lies in the fact that they are interconnected, and the progress achieved in each goal can have positive impacts onwards, but noted that to tackle the ambitious goals requires collective action; that achieving the goals requires the participation and collaboration of all sectors of society.

During his remarks, Minister Singh reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing implementation of Agenda 2030, aimed at achieving the SDGs, notwithstanding the challenging global economic context.

“This engagement is not to be seen as an isolated activity because in fact this government prides itself on its consultative approach to governance-the Manifesto itself was prepared out of a consultative process, our LCDS benefitted from National Consultations around the country, the various sector strategies and sector initiatives benefitted from consultation across the country. Our national budgets benefitted from inputs from several stakeholders, our micro-level interventions whether it be the roads we are building, the D&I structures that we are repairing, the interventions that we are making in our hinterland villages,” Dr

Singh explained.

He added that President Ali is constantly on the ground visiting communities to be able to hear directly from citizens, while government ministers are constantly on the ground engaging with citizens as these engagements inform the national budgets and government’s strategies.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira during her remarks explained that the goals are not always easy ones to attain simultaneously, as every country is at different levels of development in relation to the various goals that were set. She said the VNRs and consultation allow for measuring progress being made, the challenges being faced, whether it be a resource problem, human, financial, equipment, infrastructure, connectivity, electricity etc.

“All these things allow us to measure the progress we are making and to recognize where the gaps are and whether we address them as a nation,” she added.

In attendance and making presentations on their ministries progress on the SDGs with the various technical teams from their ministries were Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill; Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal; Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond; Minister of Local Government Nigel Dharamlall and Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, as well as various private sector and civil society groups.

Minister Indar addresses household level issues on visit to Wakenaam

AS a sign of the government’s commitment to engaging with every community to promote development, the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, and a group of technical officials visited the Island of Wakenaam (Essequibo River) on Tuesday.

The Minister met with the local leaders of the island along with the residents of various communities and addressed their concerns regarding drainage, agriculture, public assistance, and other issues that the residents raised.

The Guyana Chronicle spoke with Minister Indar, who explained that he was on the island recently and realised that the residents were facing some issues that needed urgent attention.

The Minister said that "I revisited the communities and decided to do a houseto-house visit so that I could understand, at a household level, what some of the issues

were that they were faced with personally, and on a community level and try to address them the best way that I could.

While some people had simple drainage issues that were bothering them, some people had issues with their pension books, disability

benefits, and public assistance issues, and some voiced their concerns about the speedboat operators."

According to Minister Indar, the visit to the island and the other community visits throughout the country are instructed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who believes

in taking the government to the people.

The Minister said that having a meet and greet/ walkabout in the different communities enables him and the other Ministers to understand better what is happening on the ground and see how best they can work to bring relief to the citizens of Guyana.

Apart from addressing the more minor issues in the community, Minister Indar also stated that they would continue to help the small contractors and persons in the communities throughout Guyana who are "willing to work" towards bettering their lives and the lives of others.

He said, "We are trying to ensure that the people of the community do the work in those communities rather than employing people from other villages. That will be done as long as there is a willingness and capability among the people. We are trying to help those who are interested and are willing to start up their own small

business."

Speaking with the Regional Democratic Council, Sheikh Ahmad said Minister Indar’s visit was very "fruitful," and the residents were pleased with his addressing and resolving some minor issues affecting them.

The RDC councillor also said that "we, the residents of Wakenaam, cannot complain, the PPP/C administration has invested approximately $800 million for infrastructural works on streets, the main roads, street lights, a new Arthurville Primary School, and a Health Centre among other developments on the Island."

The RDC councillor also thanked President Ali and his government for all the work that has been done and the continuous developmental progress on the Island. Ahmad said, "Over 500 residents were once walking through the mud to get to and from their destinations, but now they have roads and street lights, and we are thankful."

KENISHA Thomas , the woman at the centre of the controversy surrounding the death of her neighbour ’ s husband , Omar Ally, who died last Friday while at a Quamina Street guest house, has come forward to put “rumours” to rest and to recount what had transpired.

According to a police report , Ally and Thomas checked into Room 104 of the Quamina Guest House on April 28 A few minutes later, hotel staff were summoned to the room where they found Ally ’ s nude body on the ground with blood oozing from his head

A half-dressed Thomas was later captured on CCTV camera jumping from a second-storey window She landed on her buttocks in the walkway below She quickly jumped up and was seen limping away after hurriedly pushing her feet into a pair of slippers

In an exclusive inter -

view with HGPTV Nightly News journalist Travis Chase, the woman, who is wanted by the police for questioning, opted to “share her side of the story” and maintained that she did not kill her lover She declined to disclose her location and said she is awaiting the results of the autopsy which is scheduled for today before she surrenders herself to the police

Thomas explained that she was involved in a romantic relationship with the 49-year-old for the last four years, and they would frequently visit the hotel

The woman related that on Friday, they met at the hotel as they normally did and Ally bought three beers for her along with two bottles of Guinness for himself before entering the room

So , I went into the room, and he came in with the beer and the Guinness While sitting on the bed, he started to chat with me and told me that he had been sick for a couple of days

“He told me that he had acid reflux We gyaff and he said how stressful things were at home, and he wasn’t going through anything nice Anyway , we drank the beer, and we went on to have sex,” the woman said during her interview with Chase

Home Affairs Ministry increases efforts to prevent human trafficking

–– Illegal brothels demolished in Region Seven

THE Ministry of Home Affairs announced that on Monday the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission ( GGMC ), in collaboration with the Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons , launched an operation to demolish two illegal Brothels or Kaymui situated in the Barakatt Backdam and Crusher Landing, Region Seven

These establishments were operated by Ms Mayelin Josefina Cordova, a Venezuelan national who was recently convicted and sentenced under the Summary Jurisdiction (Of-

fences) Act, Chapter 8:02, in the Bartica Magistrates’ Court on April 26th, 2023, for using a brothel.

As investigations continue into this case , the ministry noted that it will keep the public informed

Further , the ministry stated “ we would like to thank the Guyana Police Force – TIP Unit, Counter Trafficking in Persons Unit, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) for their continued support in our fight against human trafficking in Guyana.”

said she went into the bathroom first while Ally stood by the door

“ While bathing all I hear is bladaps! When I look around, I see him lying on the toilet bowl panting for breath, So, I run out of the bathroom, wrap up with the [towel] and run down to the receptionist and I seh ‘ come quick , he falls down,’” the woman said as she narrated the moments leading up to Ally’s death

Thomas said the receptionist accompanied her to the room and told her they would have to call the police and ambulance.

“When she turned to me and said that she will have to call the police , I said , ‘No! Don’t do that I can’t stay; this is my neighbour’s husband I started to panic.”

She added that upon hearing what the receptionist said, she became nervous and picked up her clothes, jumped through a window and ran away

When questioned by Chase as to why she chose to run away, Thomas said

that she didn’t want Ally’s wife and family to find out about their relationship

Asked if she and the victim had a fight in the room , Thomas responded in the negative and insisted that she “voluntarily” went into the hotel with her lover

“No, I’m innocent. Now, if I went into the hotel voluntarily with this man, why would we have to fight ? We never had an argument. We never had a problem So why would I have to kill him? I think maybe the

medication that he’s using, his body couldn’t have taken the Guinness; maybe that made his heart give out ,” Thomas said

When asked about the cause of Ally’s death, Thomas suggested that it could be due to a combination of factors, including the medication he was taking and the high intensity of intercourse they had

Thomas maintained her innocence and indicated that she plans to cooperate fully with the investigators

She believes that the autopsy report will clear her name and reveal the truth about what led to Ally ’ s death

“When they do the autopsy , I ’ m going to turn up with a lawyer because I ’ m innocent Because I was hearing all sides of the story I’m sad about the situation because his family is terrorising my family Pelting down my grandmother’s place, and nobody knows anything,” she said The investigation is ongoing.

The taskforce and its sister agencies, the Home Affairs Ministry noted , will continue its focus on increasing awareness of human trafficking , strengthening enforcement efforts , international co-operation, and enhancing work with all stakeholders ( government, civil society organisations and the private sector) to prevent human trafficking and thwart the efforts of traffickers.

Freedom and Responsibility

Today, May 3, marks World Press Freedom Day - a day designated by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and to remind governments of their duty to uphold it.

The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy and a fundamental human right. It enables journalists to investigate and report on issues that are crucial to the public interest; to hold those in power accountable, and to provide citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions.

However, in many parts of the world, journalists face harassment, intimidation, imprisonment, and even vi -

olence for their work. Governments and powerful entities often try to suppress the media's reporting and criticism, leading to a lack of transparency and accountability.

In the era of digital communication, press freedom is more critical than ever before. The internet and social media have provided new platforms for journalists to disseminate information and reach wider audiences. However, they have also enabled the spread of disinformation, propaganda, and hate speech, which can undermine the public’s trust in the media and weaken democracy.

On this Press Freedom Day, we should reflect on the challenges that journalists face in fulfilling their vital role

and renew our commitment to protect and promote the freedom of the press. Governments should ensure that journalists can work without fear of retaliation or censorship, and that they have access to information that is essential for their reporting.

We should also support independent media outlets and responsible journalism, as they are essential for maintaining a healthy public discourse and holding those in power accountable. Let us stand together to defend the freedom of the press and the democratic values that it represents.

Guyana is generally considered to have a free and independent press, with a constitution that guarantees freedom of expression

and the press.

The media landscape is diverse, with a range of private newspapers, radio and television stations, and online outlets.

However, there have been concerns about incidents of harassment and violence against journalists, particularly those probing political persons, as was seen recently when a Guyana Chronicle journalist was verbally attacked by Chief Scrutineer of the PNC/APNU, Carol Joseph. There have also been questions regarding the treatment of reporters by the Opposition Leader and other persons close to the Opposition.

Local journalists have also been subject to vile attacks on social media attacks from unknown characters.

Overall, while press freedom in Guyana is generally respected, there are still some challenges and risks facing journalists and media organisations.

Calling press freedom “our way of life” in any democratic society, President Dr. Irfaan Ali had said last year that the media plays a critical role in society, particularly in Guyana, given the important development juncture that the country is at, with its burgeoning oil and gas sector.

“I believe in the full freedom of the press. I am open to constructive criticism. Freedom and press freedom… to understand what it is is understanding our way of life; it is a culture. All of us have to have it in us to accept it as a

way of life, of culture,” President Ali declared.

However, the President pointed out that as with any democratic freedoms, there must be regulations against abuses.

“When we speak of freedom, we are speaking of the ability to conduct ourselves in an open, free manner. But the ability to conduct ourselves in such a manner is within the confines of rules and the constitution that exists in a democratic society,” the Head of State said.

In essence, while the media has the responsibility to ask probing questions and highlight injustices, there is also the implied understanding that this must be done ethically and responsibly at all times.

President Ali is on a mission

Guyana has seen remarkable growth in recent years and the quality of life has definitely improved under Dr. [Irfaan] Ali’s stewardship.

The President of Guyana has been resolute in bringing all the people of our nation together and Guyana will consolidate its position as a global leader.

Like any true patriot, I am thrilled with the level of human and capital development in my country and the facts will always remain; those opposed to development, unity and progress are not worthy of leadership posts and respect.

The damning revelations from the report of the Commission of In -

quiry into March 2, 2020 elections unequivocally point to the “shockingly brazen attempts” to steal a country by a few who preach good governance and transparency today. The country will forever remember and salute those who protected our freedoms and rights; the world will never forget those who tried to subvert

basic human rights.

The fact that the People’s Progressive Party is contesting in all constituencies across the country at the upcoming elections shows people’s unwavering support to our leaders and the government. The strong performance of the ruling administration makes it an obvious choice for people at polls.

The enormous support and love shown to the People’s Progressive Party on Nomination Day is a true representation of President Ali’s ‘One Guyana’ initiative.

The transformation of this great country is visible and the government has demonstrated a willingness to sit and address issues squarely. Guyanese are valued,

empowered and inspired by such management of this country. Not only is the President revolutionising Guyana, but the wider region.

Yours sincerely, Rajiv

Support for President Ali’s policies and his ‘One Guyana’ initiative is widespread

Dear Editor,

After 57 years of independence and 53 years as a Co-operative Republic of Guyana, many presidents from the two major parties have tried to heal the racial divide and unite the races, but unlike President Dr. Irfaan Ali, they met with very little success. And the reason being is that they did not have the vision like His Excellency, who since being sworn in as President in August 2020, had the foresight, wisdom, and courage to initiate his ‘One Guyana’ vision to unite the people and build a prosperous Guyana for all. The One Guyana initiative is the first of its kind to have ever been introduced in the country to unify the races.

From the inception, and given the oil resources, President Ali has embarked on some bold and gutsy economic policies to develop Guyana, improve the lives of the people, particularly the poor and the downtrodden and move the country from a Global South (Third World) and underdeveloped status to a Global North (First World) developed nation. These policies along with the One Guyana vision have resonated with the people in almost every district and village and have gained widespread support across the country including the hinterland regions.

Not only is President Ali’s One Guyana vision a brilliant idea that is good for the country, but the fact that he grew up in the multi-ethnic village of Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara, he therefore saw the need to heal the racial divide and unite the people. His sincerity and passion to unite Guyanese is evident in his call on all Guyanese to join as one people for the single purpose of building our beloved country. He is an inspirational and visionary leader; compassionate,

sociable, and humble and as President, Dr. Ali has achieved a lot due to systematic preparation for the imponderables and vicissitudes of public life. While no one can predict the future, yet many believe that President Ali will become one of, if not the greatest president of Guyana in our time and his One Guyana vision will be part of his legacy which historians will most likely write about.

The truth is no one can dispute the fact that the country should and must be united because in unity lies the greatest strength of all, especially since our covetous and barefaced neighbour to the west continues to make the false, obnoxious, and atrocious claim of two-thirds of Guyana’s territory. However, the Ali government has recently won a preliminary round at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague on the border dispute. And while the ICJ decision is being viewed as a success for Guyana, it has been a major disappointment for President Maduro’s autocratic regime.

It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips is fully aware of the benefits of unity because as the head of the unified Guyana Defense Force, he has become one of strongest advocates of President Ali’s administration policies especially his One Guyana initiative. He believes that unity is a key ingredient to the development of the country. Truth be told, Brigadier Phillips is a pacesetter with a good understanding of politics and of the people and the ability to build trusting and lasting relationships in the exercise of his duties.

Like President Ali, Brigadier Phillips’ oral communication and leadership skills are second to no one. And Guyanese are blessed to have both as leaders with the required competence, expertise, and qualities to discharge their duties Today, Guy-

ana has two great leaders in President Ali and Prime Minister Phillips who are honest, trustworthy, brave, determined

and energetic to advance the economic growth and development of our country and the well-being of the people. There is no

doubt that they will leave our beloved Guyana in excellent shape economically, politically, socially, and culturally and as a

unified nation for the next generation. We should be proud of them.

Sincerely, Dr.

Real Estate Bill brings accountable, transparent and legal framework for agents

–– Bill to be laid in National Assembly as soon as practicable says AGw

ATTORNEY General

( AG ) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, stated that the draft Real Estate Bill would be presented to Cabinet for

approval and laid before the National Assembly as soon as is practically possible

This is according to a press release from the At-

torney General’s chambers following his meeting with members of the Realtor Association of Guyana and the Guyana Association of Real Estate Professionals

on Tuesday

During this meeting , Nandlall presented a copy of the draft Real Estate Bill 2023 to the stakeholders and highlighted its provisions and objectives

He said, “The Bill will provide the requisite accountable and transparent legal framework in which real estate agents will operate and by which their transactions will be governed.”

Nandlall added that the economic expansion in Guyana results in billions of dollars passing through the sector, which is currently without necessary regulation He said this is a grave risk, and this state of affairs cannot continue

The bill was drafted after consultations with local real estate bodies and the consideration of industry best practices and international standards.

The release added that while the bill allows the sector to be as self-regulatory as possible, it includes a structure that brings together the government ,

private sector and real estate operators

The bill further addresses the licensing of realtors, the required qualifications , ethical rules governing transactions , disciplinary procedures , and the establishment of a governing authority, and also creates offences for non-compliance

He then explained that Guyana ’ s Anti - Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terro-rism (AML/CFT) framework is set to undergo evaluation in September by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) and the Financial Action Task Force (FTAF), and as a result, the real estate sector has been pegged as one of the areas WHERE regulatory framework is needed

As such, agents present from the two organisations were given two weeks to offer comments in writing on how the draft could be improved

Over two weeks ago , Nandlall said that his chambers had completed

drafting the Real Estate Legislation following extensive engagement with stakeholders and other key parties

At that time, he noted that the draft bill would be circulated and the consultative process would continue

Nandlall indicated that key components of the legislation include a code of conduct for real estate agents , formalisation of the current transaction process with enhancements , and improved protection for buyers, sellers, agents, and brokers.

In June 2022 , at the launch of the Realtor’s Association of Guyana, it was said that, as the country’s real estate sector continues to grow, the industry needs heavy regulation

He indicated that while legislation was in the pipeline, the government would only play a regulatory role and would only pass a law to establish a structure to regulate the players in the industry.

Media freedom essential for democracy, transparency and accountability, says diplomatic community

Below is

tion of the European Union, H.E. Ambassador Rene van Nes, join to observe World Press Freedom Day under the theme, “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s decision, proclaiming the international day for press freedom and it brings us to a point of reflection on the state of media freedom in Guyana after 30 years. As we reflect on this year’s theme, we recognise and acknowledge that media freedom is deeply imbedded within the freedom of expression and all other human rights.

The media plays a pivotal role in society by disseminating facts for public consumption and helping citizens in Guyana stay informed, establish opinions, make informed choices, and participate meaningfully in society. The availability of facts and information is fundamental to exercising such rights as access to health, education, justice, and to fighting against gender and economic inequalities. The media’s charge to responsibly deliver the facts fairly and without bias to all people, benefits all of society.

In addition to providing access to facts and information, media freedom allows for transparency and accountability, important components for Guyana’s management of resources during a time of rapid growth. It is imperative that all stakeholders, including decision- makers such as the government and the opposition, maintain a mutually respectful relationship with the media in its capacity as the fourth

estate and as a vital part of democracy in action. This means granting the media access to public officials and to information should be the norm. Requests for public information should be honored. The 2013 Access to Information Act should be effectively implemented to empower the media to do their job.

Media workers should not be restricted nor have to work under unnecessary duress or risk to their safety in order to have access to information. They should not face abuse, threats, intimidation or personal attacks in the execution of their duties, nor should they be expected to align with any specific idea, person, entity or political party, whether directly or anonymously. The media’s role is to provide objective and impartial reporting, which is essential to maintaining a healthy democracy and ensuring that all voices are heard. Therefore, it is important that employees of the media are protected and are able to carry out their duties without fear.

We discourage the practice of selectiveness in granting access to information or to public officials under the guise of media bias.

As we reflect on the past thirty years of advocacy for media freedom, we recognise that despite how far we have come, work remains. Together we must continue to develop the role that the media plays in promoting democracy, transparency and accountability and work collectively to understand the expectations of all stakeholders.

We therefore call on the media, Government, Opposition, and all stakeholders to recognise the roles and responsibilities of the media and its benefits to the people of Guyana. We thank all journalists for their hard work, sacrifice and service to society, and we urge all stakeholders to continue supporting media freedom and promoting a culture of open and honest communication in Guyana.

tion of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the 2023 HLPF.

The VNR aims to facilitate sharing experiences, including successes, challenges, and lessons learned, to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 agenda.

Prime Minister Phillips said the SDGs are crucial to building a sustainable future for "ourselves and future generations."

However, it requires the working together of various sectors towards the common goal.

“To tackle these ambitious goals we must do so with the collective action. Achieving the goals require participation and collaboration of all sectors of society. By working together we can leverage our collective resources and expertise to make progress towards the SDGs,” Prime Minister said.

He further added: “We must consider effective ways that we as government, in participation with the private sector, civil society, individuals and institutions, can work towards achieving SDGs in ways that will be beneficial and impactful on the lives for every man woman and child, with an aim that truly leaves no one behind.”

His sentiments were also shared by Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, who said: “This engagement is not to be seen as an isolated activity. This government prides itself on its consultative approach to governance.”

Dr. Singh shared that even though the government has been implementing a comprehensive national development agenda, very closely aligned with the SDGs, challenges remain, particularly as the country, like many others, continues to navigate ongoing global setbacks.

Over ten government ministries and agencies participated in the event, including the Ministries of Agriculture, Public Works, Local Government and Regional Development, Housing and Water, Tourism Industry, and Commerce, Office of the Prime Minister, Bureau of Statistics, Guyana Power and Light, Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) and the Hydromet Office.

“Today’s consultation will see presentations made by the various sectors on where they are and perspectives looking ahead. It will present an opportunity for interactions by and amidst the stakeholders,” Dr. Singh said.

Though there are 17 SDGs, the second VNR will focus on work under five particular SDGs, namely: Goal Six: clean water and sanitation, Goal Seven: affordable and clean energy, Goal Nine: industry, innovation, and infrastructure, Goal 11: sustainable cities and communities, and Goal 17: partnerships for the goals.

Prime Minister Phillips stated that Guyana has been making strides in these areas.

“Government’s progress includes improving our disaster preparedness, liberalisation of the telecommunications sector, expanding connectivity in the hinterland and remote communities, and equipping healthcare and education facilities in our rural communities. Our government is guided by the holistic vision of ‘One Guyana’. We are building a prosperous Guyana that can be maintained,” he said.

Also making remarks at Tuesday's consultation, Senior Director of Climate and REDD+, Pradeepa Bholonath, delivered an address on how the SDGs are integrated into Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and national implementation framework.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixiera, spoke on Guyana’s international reporting obligations and participation in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Developed in 2015, Agenda 2030 was created by the United Nations as a future global development framework to succeed the Millennium Development Goals covering 2000–2015.

Improved connectivity can boost tourism in remote communities

says Tourism Minister

MINISTER of Tourism , Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond , said that improving internet connectivity in remote communities can boost tourism in those areas and move the industry into a new frontier

The Tourism Minister made those remarks at a recent launch of a connectivity project to provide satellite and broadband connectivity to rural and hinterland areas in the country

During her remarks , Walrond told the gathering

that the government wants improved connectivity in the hinterland regions with tourism products to enhance their marketability, among other things

This came on the heels of the Minister ’ s visit to Costa Rica where she noted that, though she visited a very remote eco - lodge there , she was connected and could continue her work there

Walrond stated that that is the type of product that is needed in Guyana, “Our tourists they all have busy lives as I did and I didn’t have to be separated from

my work and the anxiety that that brings, but I can be

under a waterfall and enjoy the scenery and still be able to be connected.”

As such, she added that she wants Guyana to have better connectivity in places like Regions Eight and Nine so that tourists can stay connected while in those remote communities

With this, the Minister indicated that tourism can be boosted, and the country

can even host ‘digital nomads’ who would usually travel to different countries on extended stays as they can continue their work remotely

She remarked , “ That is what we want Could you imagine that you have a tourist who spends , on average, $1,000 a day having an extended stay of six weeks because he or she is

working in that village Do you imagine the benefit that can come to those villages.”

To this end, she stated that the Government of Guyana will support whatever initiatives that can aid in this process even as she commended the connectivity project which GTT Inc. launched in collaboration with WANSat Networks Inc

'Don’t hesitate, get vaccinated!'

Ministry of Health’s outreach aims to save lives, promote immunisation

THE government continues to deliver accessible , quality healthcare to all citizens of Guyana and has planned a vaccination campaign to target Human Papillomavirus (HPV), yellow fever, Hepatitis B,

COVID - 19 , measles , mumps and rubella ( MMR ), and tetanus , among others during this month.

The Ministry of Health is collaborating with the Maternal and Child Health Department of the George -

town Public Hospital ( GPHC ), the United Nations International Children ’ s Emergency Fund ( UNICEF ), and the private sector on an evening and weekend vaccination outreach for the month of May

Since entering office

in 2020, the government has been progressive in the fight against a number of diseases in Guyana HPV is among the many being targetted to reduce the number of preventable deaths across the country

HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause various health issues, including genital warts and cancer

As cervical cancer remains a leading cause of death in women across Guyana, the government continues to expand the vaccination campaign to reduce the number of infections and deaths

In October last year, HPV vaccines were available for women up to age 45

The move was a monumental step in the fight against the virus, as previously, only males and females between the ages of 9 and 15 were offered the vaccine

During the opening ceremony for the SMART Hospital in Paramakatoi just last month , Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony , said , as government strengthens its immunisation programme across the country, citizens must also work with healthcare providers to bring their children to the respective facilities to be vaccinated.

“We don’t want any child that is eligible for a vaccine that can help them to fight whatever disease it is , that they don ’ t get the vaccine We want to make sure that all of them get all of the vaccines,” he stated

The minister noted that often when women visit clinics or hospitals,

it is too late for them, as the virus has already progressed to cervical cancer, which is much harder to treat

“But this type of cancer is preventable…. If you get a vaccine early in life, we can prevent it from happening We have [expended] a lot of money to acquire these vaccines, so that we can prevent cervical cancer in Guyana And if we are spending this money to prevent cancers, we want everybody to become partners in helping us to prevent cancer ,”

Dr Anthony said

Persons interested in receiving any of the vaccines offered by the Ministry of Health are encouraged to visit:

• The Massy Mega Store at Turkeyen , Georgetown, from May 2 to 6, from 16:30 hours to 19:30 hours Tuesday to Friday , and 09:00 hours to 14:00 hours on Friday and Saturday

• Massy Stores Providence, East Bank Demerara on Saturday , May 6 from 09:00 hours to 14:00 hours

• Ministry of Health Brickdam Tarmac and East La Penitence Health Centre , from 16:30 hours to 19:30 hours

Mondays to Fridays, and 09:00 hours to 14:00 hours on Saturdays.

• Ministry of Health Vaccination Centre and Sophia Health Centre on Saturdays from 09:00 hours to 14:00 hours

The vaccination outreach will continue throughout May and is being held under the theme: “Don’t hesitate, get vaccinated! #VaccinesSaveLives!”

Case against Winston Jordan adjourned until May 16

THE case against former Finance Minister Winston Jordan, who is accused of misconduct in public office, has been adjourned until May 16

At the last court hearing, Jordan’s attorneys had chosen a paper committal inquiry rather than a full-blown trial

On Monday, the trial was scheduled to commence before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court

One of Jordan’s lawyers, Dawn Cush , asked for the matter to remain indictable and proceed through a paper committal

As a result, Special Or-

ganised Crime Unit (SOCU) prosecutor, Neville Jeffers, requested an adjournment to prepare for this new procedure

Tuesday , May 2 , 2023 , was scheduled for reports on the matter However, this was later fixed to May 16 by the Magistrate.

Jordan appeared in court for the first time in December 2021 and was released on $3 million bail He was not required to plead to the charge since it was an indictable offence

It was alleged that, while serving as Finance Minister under the APNU + AFC coalition government , Jordan

committed willful misconduct by acting recklessly when he signed the NICIL ( Transfer of Property ) Order, No 50 of 2020 NICIL, the government ’ s holding company, fell under Jordan’s ministerial portfolio

The substantive matter relates to Jordan transferring and vesting to BK Marine Inc all buildings, erections , stellings , platforms , and further appurtenances at Mud Lots One and Two, F of Mud Lot Three, A, B & D, amounting to more than 2.553 acres

In that transaction, it was reported that $ 20,260,276 was paid for a proper -

ty initially valued at over $5,000,000,000 The selling price was reportedly grossly below the actual value of the assets sold

The prosecution argued that this amounted to an abuse of the public ’ s trust without reasonable excuse or justification.

During the last hearing of the case, Jordan’s lawyers contested that their client was not a ‘Public Officer.’

The former Finance Minister is also being represented by fellow APNU coalition party members , attorneys - at - law Roysdale Forde S C., Khemraj Ramjattan, Joseph Harmon, and

The prosecution had previously submitted that Chief Justice Roxane George addressed the precedent in the case of Winston Brassington and Dr Ashni Singh versus the Chief Magistrate

In that case, Dr Singh, who was also a finance minister, was considered to be a Public Officer, and Article 232 of the Constitution of Guyana provides that a ‘Public Officer’ means the holder of any public office and includes any person appointed to act in such an office

Magistrate Daly has reserved her ruling on the issue and will proceed with the

This prompted Cush to inform the court that the defence would move to the High Court to challenge Daly’s decision.

ACM: Journalism remains an essential tool for maintaining regional transparency, accountability

Below is a statement by the Association of Caribbean Media Workers to mark World Press Freedom Day 2023:

GREETINGS to all media

workers across the Caribbean on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day being observed on May 3

The theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day“Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”- throws the spotlight on the invaluable role of the freedom to receive and impart ideas.

2023 also marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the mandate of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights

Freedom of Expression is not only enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but is listed as a fundamental right in many of our constitutions in the Caribbean Indeed, a small number of countries have gone a step further and have enshrined press freedom

World Press Freedom provides an opportunity to focus on the immense importance and connection of freedom of expression to all other human rights such as education, health, freedom of movement, rest and leisure, and the free will of the people to elect their leaders

In the absence of freedom of expression, more often than not through the media, the public cannot be properly educated and informed about the other human rights to which they are entitled

Therefore, the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) urges Caribbean deci-

sion-makers to utilise the rapid advances in Social Media as a mass communication tool to facilitate the two-way flow of information on all public interest subjects that touch and concern the many facets of the other human rights The ACM takes a dim view of the increasing practice of decision - makers , especially those in the political sphere, who have resorted to oneway communication through Tweets and Facebook video and text posts. This approach appears to be a clear avoidance of scrutiny at press conferences and interviews We urge an end to such a practice that robs the public of details that will potentially allow them to make rational decisions These deficiencies in freedom of expression are leading to dysfunctional societies

With the proliferation of Social Media and all its attendant ills of misinformation and disinformation , the ACM ’ s unwavering position is that there is invaluable space for journalism as means of freedom of expression

Professionally practiced to ensure accuracy and fairness , journalism is the only conduit to cultivate the public as change agents for transparency , good governance and accountability.

On behalf of the executive and members of the ACM as well as all other media workers across the Caribbean , the ACM urge all of us to be vigilant and guard against new laws, regulations and practices that violate the tenet of freedom of expression.

DHB ‘Span Nine’ replacement to enhance retraction operation, increase capacity

THE Demerara Harbour Bridge ’ s (DHB) ‘span nine’ which is valued at $1.2 billion, was, on Sunday, transported from the dockyard for installation.

This is a massive undertaking that requires careful planning and coordination, as the installation cannot be done while traffic is flowing

The replacement process will leave a significant gap on the bridge, making it imperative that everything is done correctly to ensure the process is executed flawlessly

Minister of Public Works , Bishop Juan Edghill, said there is much to be considered before the replacement of the

span, such as timings and tide

“We have to get into position [and] get everything in place We have to get an agreement with all of the stakeholders because once it is going to be installed, it is going to cause interruption,” he said

The minister emphasised that there would be announcements and pre-planning, which would involve consultations at all levels, to ensure that the movement of people and supplies is catered for while the span is being replaced

With the replacement of span nine, citizens will see an enhanced retraction operation with greater capacity to move vessels through the bridge.

of Amateur bouts including a female match-up.

Bristol informed that this Card is his first Promotion in over a year, as he explained the reason for its name ‘return of the scorpion.

“We have the best young boxers in the Caribbean at the these Events which helps to give them the type of exposure they deserve” added the experienced promotor.

Since they will be females on show I have gotten Shondell Alfred to work with the female boxers” continued Bristol who revealed that in addition to a well stocked food and drinks bar, there would be a special Door prise for lucky fans who will be entertained by pulsating music from a massive Sound System.

Alfred is one of only two Guyanese women to win a World title; the other being Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O'Neil who beat American Kathy Rivers in the first ever World Title fight staged in Guyana, in 2004 at the National Park.

Blake, representing GBA’s President Steve Ninvalle, who is also Guyana’s Director of Sport, spoke proudly of this crop of Guyana’s Amateur pugilists.

“We (Guyana) are the headquarters of Amateur boxing in the Caribbean and some of those on this Card are the group ‘B’ of our boxers, noted Coach Blake.

Blake affirmed the Joel Williamson will match gloves with an opponent from either TT or Guadeloupe; Tiquan Sampson will battle St Lucian Arthur Henry; Shakquian James will face another St. Lucian while Emanuel Pompey will clash with a fighter from Suriname, while Jamal Eastman takes on Bajan Joel Bish-

ops.

“We are also looking at having the Jackman sisters and Tafina Barker on show. In order for us to provide our young talent with International experience, the GBA is looking for boxers from the Caribbean, mainly Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados. Guadeloupe, Curacao, Aruba, Suriname and St. Lucia to come here to compete against them.

“We also want to identify the boxers from their community and geographical locations so fans in their area can know where they are from and come out and support their boxers” divulged Blake.

The Coach said that Williamson and Eastman are Berbicians, the Jackman sisters are from East Ruimveldt while Sampson and James live in Laing Avenue and Pompey is from Sophia.

Abdool, the GBB’s Head, noted that Bristol has been around for a long time and has promoted Cards for both Professional and Amateur boxing and it was good that this is a Pro-Am card.

“Amateur Boxers are very important for Pro fighters since this is the nursery that produces most of Guyana’s best boxers.

Without Amateurs there would be no Professionals, so it’s important that we find space and time for them to get oppertiuinites to compete on the same Card as the Professionals” stressed Abdool.

The GBB top-man said the May 21 Card comes at an opportune time since it should provide Dharry a great chance to get a warm-up fight ahead of his WBC Silver encounter in July.

Dharry will fight for WBC Silver which is one level down from a World Title and according to Abdool, that fight is slated for July 15, 2023 at the Everest Cricket Club on Camp Road.

Dharry last fought in Guyana on April 23, April 2022 at the National Stadium at Providence when he Promoted his own fight and beat Orlando Penal for the vacant WBC International Super Fly title.

Kohli vs Gambhir: 'If you can give it, you got to take it'

FOLLOWING a fractious end to Monday night's IPL game, with Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir having to be separated from each other, the Royal Challengers Bangalore batter addressed the situation in a video published by his team on YouTube.

Captured candidly as he was celebrating with the rest of the players, Kohli was seen saying, "That's a sweet win boys. A sweet win. If you can give it, you got to take it. Otherwise don't give it.

RCB came from behind to beat Lucknow Super Giants in a low-scoring tussle, which bore striking resemblance to a grudge match. The two teams had already been involved in previous game that also turned out to be an emotional roller-coaster when LSG secured a last-ball,

...The RCB batter and the LSG mentor got into an altercation at the end of a tight game in Lucknow

one-wicket victory in Bengaluru

In celebrating that win, Gambhir was seen shushing the Chinnaswamy crowd, a gesture which Kohli reprised at Ekana stadium.

Back in the dressing room, and speaking directly to the camera, Kohli added, "It was a really important win for us. The fact that we got more support from the home crowd is an unbelievable feeling. It tells you all about how much we are liked as a team and how people come out and back us. It's a very sweet win. Feels very good for many reasons but most importantly for the kind of character we showed defending that total [126]. I think everyone had the belief that we could do it and we were on the winning side which is great."

The IPL took note of the

altercation and fined both Kohli and Gambhir 100% of their match fees. They were found to be in breach of article 2.21 of the tournament's code of conduct, which covers all type of conduct that brings the game into disrepute, including unruly public behaviour.

While the players were shaking hands after the game, there seemed to be words exchanged between LSG bowler Naveenul-Haq and Kohli. Naveen was fined 50% of his match fees.

RCB director of operations Mike Hesson admitted that some of the needle stemmed from the two teams' first meeting at this IPL. "I guess after the last match at the Chinnaswamy, where we lost off the last ball, it always felt like we were really desperate to get this one. So I think you probably saw a little bit of that

Salt out first ball but Delhi beat Gujurat in IPL

ISHANT Sharma expertly defended 11 from the final over as Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by five runs in the Indian Premier League.

Chasing 131, Gujarat were 32-4 but Hardik Pandya and Abhinav Manohar shared 62 to keep them in the game.

Rahul Tewatia then hit three successive sixes to leave 12 from the final over, but Ishant got Delhi over the line.

Delhi battled to 130-8, after being 23-5, including losing England's Phil Salt to the game's first ball.

Gujarat were on top from the get-go when Salt slapped Mohammed Shami's first ball to cover.

It was the 30th time a wicket had fallen to the first ball of an IPL match, and the third time it has happened to an England player after Michael Lumb in

2010 and Joe Denly in 2019.

It is the second time Salt has been out to his first ball in four innings in this year's tournament.

Shami was superb, bowling four straight overs and taking 4-11 to put Delhi on the back foot.

But Aman Hakim Khan made his maiden professional half-century in 50 and 53-run stands with Axar Patel and Ripal Patel to drag Delhi up to what was ultimately a winning score.

Gujarat struggled for fluency throughout their innings, with the run-rate consistently creeping up, but with Hardik at the crease they were favourites throughout.

Tewatia's devastating hitting off Anrich Nortje turned them into strong favourites in the final over but Ishant nailed four yorkers, including having Tewatia caught at cover.

"We would have taken 129 but we just lost a couple of wickets and Rahul [Tewatia] got us back in the game," said Gujarat captain Hardik, who finished 59 not out off 53 balls.

"I could not capitalise - it boils down to me as always. I should have won it for us at the end but I could not get my rhythm."

"Our bowlers were absolutely amazing," said Delhi Capitals captain David Warner.

"We keep finding a way to lose wickets in clumps. I don't know what is happening with our batting at the moment but we won and got the two points."

Delhi remain bottom of the 10-team table but join Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders on six points. Gujarat are still top but missed the opportunity to pull four points clear.(BBC Sport)

boil over tonight."

The RCB captain had no problems with the spectacle.

"That's the best version of

Virat, isn't it?" Faf du Plessis said. "To see him pumped up like that. That's when he's at his best. It's really awesome

Former Yorkshire players set to be sanctioned for racist language today

SIX former Yorkshire players are set to be sanctioned today for using racist language.

Five individuals – John Blain, Tim Bresnan, Andrew

Gale, Matthew Hoggard and Richard Pyrah – were found to have used the word ‘P***’ towards former Yorkshire team-mate Azeem Rafiq or other people of Asian ethnic-

ity in an independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel decision issued on March 31.

All five had withdrawn from the disciplinary process

prior to a hearing taking place in early March to determine liability, with the cases against them heard in their absence.

A further ex-Yorkshire player, Gary Ballance, admitted a charge of using racist and/or discriminatory language prior to the hearing and did not appear. He too will be sanctioned today.

The CDC panel cleared former England captain Michael Vaughan of using racist and/or discriminatory language.

Yorkshire admitted four charges in the case, which stemmed primarily from allegations made by Rafiq and the club’s handling of those allegations.

A separate hearing will deal with the sanctions the club will face on June 27.

Former England international Hoggard was found to have used the term “P***” towards Rafiq and other Asian players during the 2008 season, and the term ‘Rafa the Kaffir’ towards Rafiq.

It also found he had used the term “token black man” or “TBM” towards former Yorkshire team-mate Ismail Dawood, and dismissed Hoggard’s assertion that Dawood had created the nickname himself.

Gale, a former Yorkshire captain and head coach, was also found to have used the term “Rafa the Kaffir” to -

wards Rafiq and the term “P***” towards Rafiq and Yorkshire academy player Mosun Hussain.

Blain was found to have used the term “P***” in 2010 and/or 2011 while at Yorkshire, while Bresnan and Pyrah were found to have used the term “fit P***” or “FP” about Asian women.

The panel will issue sanctions after considering any written submissions and verbal representations put before it by the six individuals.

The PA news agency understands as of Tuesday afternoon written submissions had only been received on behalf of Ballance.

The six individuals were charged with breaching England and Wales Cricket Board Directive 3.3.

The Directive states: “No such person may conduct themself in a manner or do any act or omission which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute.”

Among the panel’s sanctioning powers are the imposition of suspensions and fines, and ordering an education or training course be completed.(Sportsmax).

Philadelphia 76ers beat Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets take 2-0 lead over Phoenix Suns

JAMES Harden inspired the Philadelphia 76ers to a thrilling 119-115 victory over the Boston Celtics in game one of their Eastern Conference semi-final.

Harden scored 45 points, including a three-pointer to put the 76ers ahead with eight seconds remaining at TD Garden in Boston.

"He was awesome," said Sixers coach Doc Rivers. "Kept his cool, knew when to attack, knew when to give it up."

Game two of the best-ofseven series is at the same venue tomorrow.

The Sixers were without the injured Joel Embiid. The six-time NBA All-Star suffered a knee injury in game three of the first-round playoff series against the Brooklyn Nets and it is not yet known when he will return.

Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points for the 76ers, while Jayson Tatum led the way for the Celtics with 39.

Two free throws from Tatum put Boston 115-114 ahead late in the final quarter, but Harden held his nerve to sink a three-pointer from 25 yards and give Philadelphia the lead.

"He had just the perfect mindset," said Rivers. "I'm so happy for him because it just tells you what he can do on a

given night.

"It's amazing - the guy's a Hall-of-Famer and all you hear is the other stuff about him. He's fantastic."

In the Western Conference, Nikola Jokic scored 39 points as the Denver Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns 97-87 to take a 2-0 series lead.

"Nikola's an MVP for a reason. He can take over a game. He can beat you in a lot of ways. I love an aggressive Nikola Jokic," said Nuggets coach Michael Malone.

Aaron Gordon added 16 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 14 for the Nuggets in a game dominated by defences at the Ball Arena in Denver.

Devin Booker scored 35 points and Kevin Durant 24 for the Suns, who lost Chris Paul to a groin injury in the third quarter.

Game three is in Phoenix on Saturday.(BBC Sport)

Pele FC Alumni Educational Programme 2023 was deemed a resounding success

CHAIRMAN of the Pele FC Alumni Corporation, Denis Ivor Carrington has deemed the 2023 Educational Programme, which made a return after being halted by COVID-19, a resounding success.

Carrington, along with a number of other Executive members including Treasurer, Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton along with other members in the Diaspora, spent two weeks in Guyana last month to run off this marquee activity among others.

Having returned to the USA where most of them reside, Carrington informed that after reviewing this year’s re-

bound edition, they can only conclude that its success was heartwarming.

“We are of the collective position that this year’s activity was very impactful and we were able to achieve the desired objectives amongst which was ensuring that the kids were exposed to life skills sessions over the three days of the programme. We owe a depth of gratitude to all those persons and entities that contributed to the success of all the activities that we held whilst in Guyana, especially, the Lions Club of Georgetown, Durban Park which co-ordinated and ran the Life Skills Camp.”

This programme attracted 126 students and took place at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary, from April 11-13. Commissioner of Police (ag) Clifton Hicken paid a surprise visit and interacted with the participants.

Among the topics dealt with during the three days were Acceptable Social Behaviour, facilitated by Ms. Dawn Braithwaite; Life Skills – Self Awareness, Dental Hygiene (Dr. Watson), Health Care – Mental Health (Cecil Jacques), Life Skill-Decision Making, and Social Etiquette.

The participants at one of the lunch sessions were treated and exposed to eating with

the relevant cutlery, many said that it was the first time they were exposed to eating with the correct cutlery whilst observing all the required protocols.

Dr. Mark Kirton delivered the feature address at the opening. Apart from each receiving a backpack with educational material including a tablet on the final day, the opening day saw each participant being presented with a back sack containing personal health items.

Additionally, eight of the participants were rewarded with laptops for being attentive during the sessions and answering questions when

posed by each facilitator.

The final day of the Life Skills Camp saw the kids going on an educational tour which took them to the Caricom Building in the morning and then to the University of Guyana in the afternoon.

Mr, Carrington concluded that whilst it was very hectic, they are very pleased with what was achieved.

“This is something we plan for and work towards doing. We love it and are energized when we see these kids coming out daily and being actively involved in each session. This is just our way of giving back to the country of our birth and what better way

to do it than by empowering the next generation to become rounded citizens that can go on to do well for themselves and Guyana.”

A number of the scholarship students who are being sponsored by the Pele FC Alumni on various programmes at UG, as well as at the Secondary level participated by sharing their experiences with the kids attending the programme.

This was used as a tool to encourage the participants, who themselves can one day become recipients of a Pele FC Alumni, scholarship at the Secondary level or UG.

Brian Lara Stadium to host T20Is in money-spinning England tour

ST JOHN’S, Antigua

(CMC) – The Brian Lara Stadium will host an international involving England for the first time when the World champions tour the Caribbean next December for a money-spinning eightmatch white-ball series.

The venue, located in Tarouba in south Trinidad, will stage the final two fixtures of the five-match Twenty20 International series on December 19 and 21, Cricket West Indies announced Tuesday.

Only last year, the stadium hosted its first-ever in-

ternational when West Indies went down to India by 68 runs in the opening T20I of that five-match series.

Kensington Oval in Barbados will host the opening T20 International on December 12 before the series moves to the National Stadium in Grenada for the second and third T20I on December 14 and 16.

The tour will get underway with One-Day Internationals at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua on December 4 and 6, with the Kensington Oval staging

the third and final ODI on December 9.

“We are delighted to be able to confirm the England match schedule and to welcome once again their many travelling fans to the region for a pre-Christmas whiteball tour,” said CWI chief executive, Johnny Grave.

“This tour will be a major economic boost to the host countries, as well as providing our fans with the chance to see some of their favourite players in action against one of our biggest rivals.

“The tour will also help

with our ongoing venue preparation and event planning for one of the biggest events ever to be staged in the region, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which takes place in June next year.

“We also look forward to announcing the fixtures and venues for the India tour of the West Indies in July and August very soon.”

England toured the Caribbean last year January for a five-match T20I series which the hosts captured 3-2, and then returned in March for a three-match Test series which

they lost 1-0.

England are the reigning ODI and T20I World champions while West Indies are ranked seventh in T20Is and ninth in ODIs.

Arsenal outclass sorry Chelsea to return to top of the Premier League

ARSENAL delivered an emphatic warning that they remain serious title contenders as they outclassed abysmal Chelsea at Emirates Stadium to return to the top of the Premier League.

The Gunners had gone four league games without a win and were heavily beaten last time out at reigning champions Manchester City, who replaced them at the summit with victory at Fulham on Sunday.

Arsenal responded by producing a magnificent first-half display, racing into a 3-0 lead inside 34 minutes courtesy of two crisp strikes by captain Martin Odegaard and a scrambled finish by Gabriel Jesus.

Chelsea, who fell to a sixth straight loss under interim manager Frank Lampard, were thankful to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga that the scoreline was not even more embarrassing and even pulled one back through Noni Madueke.

Arsenal, however, were never in serious danger and are now two points clear of City having played two games more than

their title rivals.

Arsenal not going quietly

Arsenal answered all the questions about their character following a recent mini-slump as they tore into Chelsea from the kick-off, backed by fervent supporters who have not given up despite City's relentless surge back to the top.

The Gunners have been unfairly tagged as "chokers" by some following a recent run in which they lost two-goal leads at Liverpool and West Ham United, drew at home to struggling Southampton and were simply overwhelmed 4-1 at City.

This was the Arsenal who have made an outstanding contribution to this season, made the title race a serious contest and provided a feast of attractive attacking football along the way.

Mikel Arteta's side were assisted by a truly appalling firsthalf display by Chelsea, but Arsenal were nevertheless quicker, showed more intensity and ran their London rivals ragged with the quality of their play.

Arsenal looked full of self-belief but they will be a lit-

tle disappointed that they did not add to their tally after the break and also allowed Chelsea to give themselves the faintest glimmer of hope with a goal.

There will also be concern over an injury to defender Gabriel, who struggled on after taking a knock when Madueke scored Chelsea's consolation but eventually had to go off.

In all other respects, however, this was a highly satisfactory night for Arteta and his players.

Something rotten at the heart of Chelsea

Lampard's return to Chelsea is turning into a nightmare in what was already a season of unrelenting misery under the chaotic co-ownership of Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Chelsea's performance, especially in the first 45 minutes, was a gutless fiasco and suggested there is something deep-rooted and rotten at the heart of the club.

The lack of effort, competitive edge and desire will have felt like a new low for Chelsea fans who have suffered so much

Australia batter Steve Smith says Sussex stint is not about gaining Ashes advantage

AUSTRALIA batter Steve Smith says he has nothing left to learn about English conditions as he begins a stint at Sussex before this summer's Ashes.

Smith, 33, is available for three County Championship matches before Australia face India in the World Test Championship final from 7-11 June.

The first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston starts on 16 June.

"I've been around for a while now, so hopefully I've got it all in my kit bag," Smith told BBC Sport.

Smith has hit six centuries at an average of 65.08 in his 14 Ashes Tests in England.

When asked if his spell at Sussex could give Australia an advantage in the Ashes, he said: "It's my fourth time playing an Ashes series in England, so I don't think the conditions are too foreign to me."

Australia have held the Ashes since 2018 but have not won a series in England in 2001.

They won the last Ashes 4-0 in Australia in 202122, part of a dismal run by England in which they won just one of 17 Tests.

However, under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, England have adopted an ultra-attacking approach, winning 10 out of 12 Tests since they took over.

England bowler Stuart Broad said "it would be great" if Australia tried to mirror the hosts' tactics this summer as they could make mistakes.

"I probably won't change

too much how I go about things," said Smith, who has a strike rate of 53.89 runs per 100 balls in Tests.

"We'll wait and see what the conditions hold and I'll play what's in front of me.

"The way England have been playing for the last 12 months and the way we've gone about it, it's going to be two really good teams clashing against each other and I hope it's a really entertaining series."

Smith scored 774 runs, including three centuries, at an average of 110.57 in the last Ashes series in England in 2019, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

He was booed by sections of the crowds, having recently returned to the Australia team following a year-long ban for his part in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Smith said he was "not entirely sure" whether he will get a negative reception from the stands again this summer.

"It doesn't really faze me too much, I just go about

this season.

Lampard's decision to start former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang backfired as he had only nine touches - four of which were kick-offs - before being replaced at the break.

If Lampard thought his short stint at Chelsea was a chance to prove he is better than he appeared when he was sacked by Everton and might pave the way for new opportunities, it has not worked out that way. He is now suffering serious reputational damage.

Raheem Sterling's struggles

are symbolic of how Boehly's big-money buys have failed to deliver and it was no surprise when he was substituted.

Chelsea, now languishing in 12th place, are a team seemingly lacking any structure or gameplan.

And supporters who hoped the chance to dent Arsenal's title challenge in a London derby might finally fire up their under-performing stars were left feeling betrayed by another dreadful showing.

"It's always good fun playing in England and there's always good banter."

Sussex have won one and drawn two of their Division Two matches so far this season.

Smith is set to make his Sussex debut at Worcestershire on Thursday, before another away game at Leicestershire on 11 May, followed by a home match against Glamorgan, which starts on 18 May.

The right-hander, who had a spell playing T20 for Worcestershire in 2010, said that as a "traditionalist" he has "always wanted" to play in the County Championship.

"I'm really excited by coming over here to play a few games and I'm looking forward to getting started," he said.

"Hopefully I can score some runs along the way and help the boys get some success."(BBC Sport).

Administrative Manager of Queensway Security Service Inc., located at 153 Regent Road and Oronoque Street, in the city, Ms. Cindy Girwar made a timely donation on behalf of her company to the Guyana National Rifle Association (GuyanaNRA), ahead of next week’s Caribbean Championships.

Set to be held at the Crabbs Rifle Range in Antigua & Barbuda, the GuyanaNRA has received excellent support from corporate Guyana and the Government, through the Ministry of Sport and the National Sports Commission to ensure that Guyana field the best team to wrest back the Short Range Championship from Jamaica, who won as host nation, in 2022.

In handing over the cheque to Fullbore vice-captain, Leo Romalho at the company’s Head Office, Ms. Girwar said that they were very pleased to be once again supportive of the National Rifle Team which has made this nation proud, for

decades.

“This team is well known and has made this nation proud over the years, traditionally we have support and we are more than happy to keep this going, thus our contribution again this year. Your track record speaks for itself and we extend best wishes to you and the team ahead of this year’s competition.”

Ramalho expressed gratitude to Ms. Girwar and the main principals of Queensway Security Service Inc. on behalf of the GuyanaNRA for their committed and continued partnership.

The team is scheduled to leave Guyana on Sunday for Antigua and Barbuda where Team practice is scheduled for next week Monday with the Individual Championship firing off on Tuesday and concluding on Thursday.

Friday will be a rest day with the much-anticipated Short Range Team Match set for Saturday.

Regal Masters triumph in nail-biting finish

…Speaker’s Cup ends on resounding note

REGAL Masters held their nerves to emerge winners of the Masters Over-40 category when the first-ever Speaker’s Cup ended in dramatic fashion and on a resounding note at the Everest Cricket Club ground on Monday.

Needing nine runs in the last over to claim the title, before enthusiastic spectators, Ariel Masters, who were previously unbeaten in the three-day tournament, were left high and dry on 141 for seven, in quest of 143 for victory, going down by the dreaded one run. With three needed off the last ball, Deyon Wallace, in a mad chase for the winning runs, was left stranded, prompting wild celebrations from Ariel Masters.

The victory allowed the Campbellville based club to cart off both titles after the Legends Over-50 side had earlier made light work of Vapes Guyana in a one-sided final and also avenged a defeat to Ariel Masters in the first round on Saturday.

Despite losing the wicket of former Guyana opener Azeemul Haniff (nine) in the first over, the consistent Rawle Reid (39) and Danraj Singh (22) revived the innings with 38-run second-wicket partnership. However, Singh was

forced to retire hurt.

Reid, who slammed two fours and an equal number of sixes, kept the innings together before departing in the 17th over. He received valuable support from Patrick Khan (16), Anand Nazamadeen (13) and skipper Samuel Kingston (10) but none of them stayed long enough to take their team over the ropes. In the end, the nine needed in the last over, proved elusive.

Lakeram Roopnarine finished with three for 30, Roy Persaud two for 26 and Tyrone Sanasie one for 23.

Earlier, Regal Masters, who won the toss and opted to take first strike, were given

in

a rousing start of 64 in 6.2 overs by Prashad Mahadeo (38) and Patrick Rooplall (27) before stuttering in the middle overs to end on 142 for eight in their allotted 20. The left-handed Mahadeo struck five fours while Rooplall’s knock contained one four and two sixes.

Roy Persaud smashed two fours and six in a quickfire 20 off 13 balls while there were useful contributions from Khemchand Dindial (19) and skipper Eyaaz Mohamed (12). Reid bagged three for 30 while there was one wicket apiece for Nazamadeen, Shawn Hubbard, Mark Harold and Kingston.

At the presentation,

which followed, winners Regal Masters took home $250 000 and a trophy and Ariel Masters $100 000 and a trophy. Incentive prizes of $25 000 and a trophy each went to Rawle Reid for scoring the most runs (218), Tyrone Sanasie for taking the most wickets (nine) and player of the final, Roy Persaud. Um-

pires Mark Ernest, Patrick Edwards, Albert Dass, Nadir Baksh and Linden Matthews also received tokens of appreciation.

The Regal teams dedicated their wins to long-standing supporter Vanburn Jones, popularly known as “Pangiso,” who suffered a stroke but was present to witness

both finals.

While Regal Masters captain Eyaaz Mohamed was elated with the victory and had special praise for player-of-the-match Roy Persaud, Ariel Masters leader Kingston was very disappointed, pointing out that it was a bitter pill to swallow.

WI still eighth following ratings shake up

LONDON, (CMC)

– West Indies have remained stalled in eighth in the latest International Cricket Council rankings released Tuesday.

The Caribbean side, who once formed one of the world superpowers of the game, have 76 points and are now only ahead of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

India have regained top spot in the rankings from Australia, following the annual update which has discarded results from the 2019-20 season and

now reflects all tours completed since May 2020.

The Asian powerhouses have moved up two ratings points to 121 while the Aussies lost six points to drop to 116.

India and Australia meet in the final of the ICC World Test Championship at The Oval in England starting June 7.

Meanwhile, England remained third despite gaining eight points to leap to 114, but have closed the gap on second placed Australia to

just two points.

South Africa are still fourth on 104, New Zealand lie fifth on 100 while Pakistan (86) (84) are sixth and seventh respectively.

West Indies have endured a mixed start to the year in the longest format, beating Zimbabwe 1-0 in a two-match series in Bulawayo last February and then being swept 2-0 by South Africa the following month.

Last year, Kraigg Brathwaite’s side won three of their seven Test matches played.

India become the No. 1 ranked team ahead of World Test Championship final

AHEAD of their meeting in the World Test Championship final next month, India have moved past Australia to No. 1 on the ICC rankings for men's cricket. This shift, even though neither team has played any long-form cricket for two months, is essentially the result of the passage of time and how some series from a while ago have lost a bit of their value.

India's tally went from 119 to 121 and Australia's went from 122 to 116 because this update only takes into consideration teams' performances after May 2020 and weighs series between May 2020 and May 2022 at 50 percent and the ones in the following one-year period at 100 percent.

Australia lost points because some of their wins from

the previous cycle no longer matter in this one - like the 5-0 scoreline from the 201920 home summer, when they whitewashed Pakistan 2-0 and New Zealand 3-0. Also, the weight of their 4-0 Ashes win against England in 2021-22 was halved.

India gained points because their 2-0 defeat on tour in New Zealand in 2020 went clean out of the picture, and their 2-1 away loss to South Africa in 2021-22 now drags them down only half as much as it used to. Since the start of May 2022, India have played seven Tests

out of which they have won four, lost two, and drawn one.

England also benefitted from the latest rankings update. They remain in third place but their turnaround since Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took over as coach and captain respectively has seen them win 10 out of their 12 Tests since May 2022, after having won one of their 17 previous Tests between early February 2021 and May 2022. This has closed the gap between second and third from 13 points to two.

The rest of the Test rankings remain unchanged with only two other teams - New Zealand and South Africa at the 100-point mark. The 2021-23 WTC Cycle is now complete with the next one starting after the final. (Cricinfio)

Lionel Messi has been suspended by Paris St-Germain (PSG) for two weeks after travelling to Saudi Arabia without the club's permission this week.

The trip followed the French club's home defeat by Lorient on Sunday, in which Messi played the full 90 minutes.

Messi will not train or play for PSG during the period of his suspension.

It is understood the 35-year-old asked permission to make the journey to carry out commercial work but was refused.

Messi, who has also been fined by the club, has a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.

The World Cup winner's two-year contract with PSG expires this summer.

Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste claimed

in March that the Spanish club were in contact with Messi about a return to the Nou Camp.

Messi has scored 31 goals and contributed 34 assists in 71 games in all competitions for PSG, and won the Ligue 1 title last season.

He is set to miss matches against Troyes and Ajaccio as PSG, five points clear with five games to go, look to clinch a ninth league title in 11 seasons. (BBC Sport)
