World Cup win was a total team effort - Hetymer By Rajiv Bisnauth

WEST Indies recovered from losing their first three matches on tour, all to Bangladesh, then their first in the ICC Under-19 World Cup tournament to England by 61 runs, before going on a run that would land the region a first world title at the Under-19 level. After the defeat to England, they crushed minnows Fiji by 262 runs before eking out a narrow two-run win over Zimbabwe in controversial circumstances in their final group game to reach the quarter-finals. West Indies then produced clinical run chases to beat Pakistan by five wickets and Bangladesh by two wickets in the semi-finals to clinch their spot in the final against previously unbeaten India Under-19s. However, in an invited comment recently, captain Berbician Shimron Hetmyer said the win was a total team effort, adding that “it’s a very

that the pitches would not have been much different from those in the Caribbean but when we played our first practice game and even in the net sessions we found that the pitches were mostly green and had some bounce and pace as well.” The West Indies became the second cricket-playing nation to win every trophy in world cricket when they won the ICC Under-19

World Cup, beating India by five wickets last February 14. It was the first major title for the West Indies at any level since Darren Sammy’s senior team won the ICC Twenty20 in Sir Lanka in 2012. The West Indies added the Under-19 title to the senior World Cup titles (1975 & 1979), the Costcutter Under-15 title (2000) and Champions Trophy (2012).

Dottin five-for derails South Africa Women Windies seniors must step

Deandra Dottin FIFTIES from Hayley Matthews and Britney Cooper, followed by a five-wicket haul from fast bowler Deandra Dottin, set up West Indies Women’s 16-run win against South Africa Women in East London. West Indies, opting to bat, lost their opener Shaqua-

na Quintyne early, but a 56run stand for the third wicket between Matthews and Dottin lifted the team past 100. Matthews top-scored with 56, but both she and Dottin were trapped lbw by Sune Luus in quick succession, pegging the visitors back. Cooper, though, pro-

vided West Indies with much-needed impetus, stroking an unbeaten 55 off 66 balls, with six fours and a six. Cooper added 48 runs in the company of Shemaine Campbelle, as West Indies ended with 214 for 7. South Africa’s opener Trisha Chetty made a steady start to the chase, scoring 47, but her dismissal in the 23rd over led to a slide, as quick blows from Dottin and Anisa Mohammed reduced the hosts to 120 for 7. Marizanne Kapp (69*) and Shabnim Ismail (34) put up a brief resistance, combining for a 70-run partnership, but Dottin and Quintyne eventually ran through the tail to bundle South Africa out for 198. Dottin was the pick of the bowlers with 5 for 34, her maiden five-wicket haul, while Quintyne and Anisa chipped in with two scalps apiece. (ESPN Cricinfo)

up for World Cup - Ambrose

WEST Indies bowling legend Curtly Ambrose believes the team is an excellent position to claim the World T20 title based on the glut of talent available. Few T20 Leagues around the world could afford to have the likes of stars Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo in the same squad, but it is the embarrassment of riches so to speak that the regional team will have at its disposal next month. “Look at the team that we have, half of the team are in demand across the world for different T20 leagues. So you may find one guy here, maybe two in this league and two in another league but we have all at once so we have a great chance of winning this T20 tournament, just look at

Chris Gayle

our squad,” Ambrose said. The former player and current bowling coach, however, believes that a key component of success will rest on the shoulders of the senior players.

“The senior players, Marlon Samuel, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, captain Darren Sammy and all the senior players have to lead from the front. From my experience over the years, when the senior players - the guys that we expect to really take the mantle and take the team forward - are doing well, automatically the younger players will step up to the plate,” Ambrose added. Samuels, Gayle, Sammy and Russell were all a part of the team’s successful triumph in T20, but it will be without the services of Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard who withdrew from a named 15-man squad for separate reasons ahead of the tournament.
