AS Guyana continues to position itself as a re g i o n a l t e c h n o l o g y hub, the government is pushing aggressively to attract artificial intelligence (AI) companies and build tech parks, while simultaneously

upskilling the workforce for the digital economy ahead.

It was People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary and Guyana’s Vice-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, who last Thursday at a

press conference expounded on the government’s national push to prepare the nation and its citizens for the fast-growing hightech sector.

Dr Jagdeo said: “We will train more people in those sectors. We will recruit people from abroad for the new hospitals, so we get the best quality service. We will open up tech parks. We'll create incentives for AI companies to operate here because that's the future.”

Earlier this year, Dr Jagdeo had disclosed that several companies were eyeing opportunities, noting that there were a number of AI companies looking for opportunities in Guyana.

Just last month, the Government of Guyana signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US-based company Cerebras Systems to build and operate a state-of-the-art 100-megawatt AI data centre at Wales, West Bank Demerara.

The facility, hailed as one of the largest of its kind in the hemisphere, marks a decisive step in Guyana’s ambitious plans to become an AI-first nation and a leader in regional digital transformation.

Cerebras Systems, a global pioneer in high-performance AI computing, will deploy its CS-3 AI supercomputers and related infrastructure to serve international clients, while establishing Guyana as a destination for startups, researchers, and enterprises seeking next-generation computing capabilities.

President, Dr Irfaan Ali had described the partnership as a bold declaration of Guyana’s technological aspirations.

The data centre will serve as the cornerstone of a wider technological ecosystem in Wales and is expected to spur job creation, attract investment, and advance education

through research and innovation.

Cerebras CEO and co-founder Andrew Feldman had praised Guyana’s leadership in embracing the future of AI under the company’s “Cerebras for Nations” initiative, which helps governments build and scale sovereign AI infrastructure.

The MoU also underscored a shared commitment to data sovereignty and digital protection, with Guyana poised to introduce forward-looking legislation safeguarding national interests in the digital age. Cerebras will invest in capacity building and education, offering training, internships, and partnerships with international universities to upskill Guyanese talent.

FAST-GROWING DIGITAL SOCIETY The VP had made reference to the government’s efforts to equip citizens with the requisite skills and also digitise public services, in order to improve access and enhancing efficiency for citizens.

In his live address to the nation last Wednesday, President Ali outlined a digital-transformation agenda for Guyana, centred on a citizen-centric online portal and a national e-wallet that will change how Guyanese interact with government services and manage everyday payments.

PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali has signalled a decisive shift in the posture of the Bank of Guyana, outlining plans to modernise the institution and sharpen its role in safeguarding macroeconomic stability through proactive, data-led policymaking.

In a recent address, the Head of State said the government intends to transform the Central Bank into a forward-looking institution capable of supporting sustainable growth, protecting purchasing power, and strengthening confidence across the economy.

“Over the next five years, our government will also establish a modern, more efficient Bank of Guyana that is proactive, data-driven, and fit for the digital age. Its foremost mission will be to safeguard stable prices and a resilient exchange rate, ensuring a sustainable cost of living for all Guyanese.”

President Ali emphasised that the enhanced mandate would be underpinned by stronger and more precise monetary policy, reinforcing credibility with investors and the wider private sector.

“We will strengthen monetary-policy tools, deploying the policy interest rate and open-market operations with precision to manage liquidity and inflation expectations, while enhancing forward guidance and expanding statistical capacity to anchor private-sector confidence, innovation, and investment.”

He also pointed to sweeping reforms in payments infrastructure and capital markets as central to improving financial inclusion and unlocking new opportunities for businesses, particularly through a modernised regulatory and securities framework.

“To make financial transactions faster, safer,

and more inclusive, we will modernise the payment system and transform money and capital markets by upgrading the securities framework, thereby creating new opportunities for the private sector. The Central Bank will not be passive and will act with urgency, intelligence, and credibility to secure Guyana’s economic future.”

The President noted too that over 600,000 Guyanese are now integrated into the country’s financial system.

“We firmly believe that everyone should have equal access to participate fully in our economy, beginning with the fundamental ability to open a bank account. That is why we drastically simplified the requirement for opening bank accounts.

“These simplified procedures are already in operation. Today, more Guyanese than ever be-

fore are part of the formal banking system. In fact, the number of bank accounts has grown by more than 65,000 since 2020,” President Ali added.

Earlier this year, the President called on Guyanese to ensure they open bank accounts, as the government aims to deliver social cash transfers via the banking system.

Additionally, online banking is operational at four local commercial banks, making the process of creating a bank account much easier, including for those in the hinterland regions.

To further modernise the financial system, President Ali announced that a junior stock exchange will be created.

“We'll establish a junior stock exchange such to allow small and emerging companies to raise capital under less stringent regulatory requirements applicable to the main or senior stock exchange,” he said adding: “This will also provide an investment vehicle.

For Guyanese with savings seeking to invest with minimal risk. Together, these initiatives are designed to create a powerful

ecosystem where financial knowledge, unprecedented access to capital and new avenues for investment converge.”

Back in September President Ali announced a series of immediate policy measures to strengthen foreign exchange management and protect Guyana’s financial system.

President Ali said the government must ensure that such financial trends do not compromise the country’s economic stability or create opportunities for capital flight.

Through this portal, citizens will be able to complete a wide range of tasks digitally, including applying for vital documents, paying taxes and accessing social benefits.

President Ali highlighted the national e‑wallet as a core feature of this new ecosystem, designed to streamline how money is received and spent.

To ensure that no region is left behind in the transition to digital services, the government will complement the online platform with physical “One‑Stop Centres.”

He acknowledged that some may resist these changes because of the increased transparency

and accountability they bring, but he signalled a firm commitment to making the system work for citizens.

Ultimately, the President framed the e‑wallet and digital portal as people-centred investments aimed at making government simpler, more predictable and less dependent on in‑person bureaucracy.

“Someone must be able to either do it online by themselves or walk into one service centre and conduct all of their government business with limited interaction with public servants, because of predictability, transparency, efficiency,” Presi-

dent Ali said.

He further explained that the ‘GovConnect’ platform, a new digital appointment system aims to improve access to public services and enhance efficiency across government ministries, is currently being tested. ‘CitizenConnect,’ a new portal that allows citizens to bring matters of interest to the attention of the relevant authorities, is expected to soon go live.

Further, a new public service upskilling platform was unveiled last month and aims to transform the nation’s public sector into a world-class, agile and technology-driven force.

The platform, built in collaboration with Coursera, represents a decisive shift away from outdated systems and towards digital adaptability and human capital development.

The government is leveraging global educational platforms such as Coursera to provide free training in artificial intelligence, data management, cybersecurity, and digital communications. These courses, delivered by world-renowned universities and companies, are designed to upskill every Guyanese public servant to international standards.

TECH DEVELOPMENT Speaking further on

the government’s aim to accelerate growth within the technology sector, the VP Jagdeo also pointed out that in each region there will be a technical/ innovation hub to work with farmers and fishermen, providing them with training and product development, and with small businesses in the regions across Guyana, so that they can find support for the ventures they are pursuing.

This move, along with the broader strategy reflects the PPP/C government’s vision to diversify the economy beyond traditional sectors and align Guyana with global technological trends.

Plans in place for digital mapping of drainage & irrigation systems countrywide

PRESIDENT Dr Irfaan Ali has announced a major step forward in addressing Guyana’s long-standing drainage challenges, revealing that comprehensive plans are now in place for improvements to the country’s drainage and irrigation infrastructure starting with Georgetown.

Following extensive consultations, the government has completed detailed mapping and a full-scale assessment of existing drainage facilities, alongside an implementation plan that includes digital mapping of all pump stations and the identification of new sites.

“After consultations,

we now have detailed mapping of all drainage facilities, a full-scale assessment, and an implementation plan for Georgetown and every single region, including digital mapping of all pump stations—where they are and where new ones will be located—because drainage is an important aspect of development, especially for a country that is below sea level,” the President said last week during an address where he outlined the government’s economic plans for the next five years.

Central to the government’s plans for the beautification of the country too is the improvement of waste

management and sanitation countrywide upgrading landfill sites, deploying more critical waste-management equipment, upgrading

and Beautification Initiative, which includes funding for new and expanded landfill sites and the development of green and recreational

country, noting that the plans presented are not merely conceptual.

“My government remains committed to ensuring cleaner

The National Drainage Task Force concluded its public consultations on the Georgetown Drainage Improvement Project back in November.

Alongside the consultations on drainage and irrigation the government has also commissioned Railway Courtyard located at Lamaha and High Street, erected a community hub at the Stabroek market square ushering in the festive season with Christmas décor and fanfare.

New incentives to push business, jobs into outlying regions - VP Jagdeo says; touts establishment of economic zones, other initiatives to foster growth - gov’t to roll out special instruments to help ordinary Guyanese build wealth

OVER the next five years, the government aims to accelerate job creation and investments beyond Region Four (Demerara- Mahaica), People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary and Guyana’s Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said, noting that targeted incentives will be introduced to encourage businesses to establish operations in outlying regions.

During a press conference last Thursday, he said while there has been significant progress made under the PPP/C administration in terms of providing jobs and driving inclusive growth, the government will push even further to correct long-standing regional disparities in development.

Dr Jagdeo made these comments in light of President Dr Irfaan Ali’s sweeping five-year agenda, which he revealed last Wednesday, and described as “the most ambitious phase” of Guyana’s economic and social transformation, anchored in diversification, digitisation, and broad-based prosperity.

“The President made it clear, consistent with what we do now, to even out development. So, we recognise that to get jobs and high-paying jobs in the Amerindian communities, in the hinterland and riverine areas, in places like Region Ten or Six or the other regions, outlying regions, Essequibo Coast mainly, we have to drive more businesses to go there,” the VP said.

While the services, and oil and gas sectors have led to an economic boom in Region Four, creating an increase in the establishment of hotels and the provision of a range of services, as it relates to outlying regions, the Vice-President said: “It's not reaching these areas as quickly as we wish.”

To address this imbalance, President Ali has touted a wide-ranging package of tax incentives aimed at deepening economic diversification, encouraging private investment, and easing the financial

burden on households, small businesses, and vulnerable groups.

Central to this is the creation of special development zones which will be detailed in the 2026 national budget.

These zones will operate under a tax-free incentive regime, targeting sectors that generate export earnings, or replace imports, with a particular emphasis on agricultural technology, agro processing, and non-oil economic activity.

Dr Jagdeo explained that these measures form part of the government’s broader strategy to diversify the economy, reduce regional imbalances and ensure all Guyanese- regardless of where they reside- benefit from national, inclusive development.

He further noted that the nation can expect to hear the details of the incentives and the eligible sectors in the 2026 National Budget, which is expected to be presented in January.

“We will build out a rural credit programme at scale, through the Guyana Development Bank. We will create value chain and market access,” President Ali said.

In fact, the soon-to-beestablished Guyana Development Bank, capitalised with US$200 million, will provide zero interest, zero collateral, micro credit to small and medium-sized enterprises, women-owned businesses, young entrepreneurs, and persons living with disabilities, alongside structured mentorship and training.

SMEs will be able to access up to $3 million without collateral at zero interest, with a further $7 million available through co-financing with commercial banks at preferential rates. Agent-banking networks, digital banking, and mobile wallets will be rolled out to reach remote communities, supported by legal and regulatory reforms, and a modernised Bank of Guyana.

In addition to this, a series of investments is expected to open new agricultural acreage, while a revamped taxation

framework will eliminate duties on agricultural, veterinary and agro-processing inputs within existing trade rules.

Further, additional incentives will support agro-processing ventures, agri-value chain development, large cold-storage facilities and a graduated corporate tax system based on turnover.

This structure is designed to bring small and medium-sized agribusinesses into formal compliance, enabling them to improve standards and meet regional and international market requirements.

Measures to encourage land conversion and value-added production are also planned.

INDUSTRIAL & TOURISM INCENTIVES The President had disclosed that industrial expansion will be anchored by new manufacturing hubs benefitting from enhanced incentive regimes. At Wales, where the country’s flagship gas-to-energy project is taking shape, a significant programme is already under design, featuring a fertiliser plant, a gas bottling and logistics facility, two power plants, a data centre, the potential development of a glass factory and a small industrial estate.

“For the two investments of the bottling plant and the fertiliser plant, where the expression of interest is already out, we want those to be owned by Guyanese here and in the diaspora and our regional partners, and we will have guaranteed returns on these investments that no other can match,” he said.

Meanwhile, the country’s tourism industry is earmarked for rapid growth, supported by improvements in transport infrastructure, increased airlift capacity along with special incentive zones dedicated to tourism development will be introduced across several locations.

EXPAND INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES Other instruments will also be established to expand investment opportunities for

PPP General Secretary and Guyana’s Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo Guyanese, Dr Jagdeo said, pointing out that soon the government will introduce a government bond aimed at expanding financial inclusion and giving ordinary Guyanese a chance to attain higher and more lucrative returns on their savings.

The bond, which will be exclusively available to Guyanese is expected to have a low entry point, which could start at $50,000, with an upper limit of around $1 million, making it accessible to lowto-middle income earners and public servants and others who traditionally have limited investment options.

He said: “So, if you have a bank account now, say $500,000, you are probably getting 1-2 per cent interest at the bank. You will get a guaranteed 5 per cent interest.”

To ensure flexibility, the Vice-President said the government is also planning to develop a bond market, which would make the bond a more liquid instrument, similar to fixed deposits, while still offering high returns.

The bond initiative is part of a wider financial inclusion strategy and the Vice-President underscored that the government wants to promote a shift in mindset, from relying solely on wages and cash grants to actively managing savings, investing and build-

ing assets.

He said: “Too often, people just park their savings in the banking system and they don't look at the return on the savings and we want to give small people especially a higher return on their savings.

That's one. Two, there would be other opportunities for people who have more money so they can invest in bigger instruments, Guyanese. It's only for Guyanese.”

ALL GUYANESE ARE INCLUDED Dr Jagdeo had also firmly stated that the government

is working assiduously to ensure that every Guyanese feels included in the development agenda, acquiring opportunities for growth and development and seeing their concerns being reflected.

The government continues to work on ensuring every citizen is heard. Just last week, President Ali led a two-day Cabinet outreach in Region Three, taking government services directly to the people.

The President, ministers, Members of Parliament, Advisers and technical officers engaged residents in dozens of locations including Leonora, Uitvlugt, Farm, Patentia and Stewartville. They provided platforms for residents to raise concerns, share their views and learn about government programmes and services.

Moreover, the Vice-President explained that governance is serious business and he rejected the notion of “dumbing down” government communication to buzzwords or a few talking points but instead, he made it clear that the philosophy of governance needs to be balanced, anticipating future challenges and avoiding short-term gains which could lead to long-term decline.

The Season of Light and Unity

THERE is no season quite like a Guyanese Christmas. It is a time when the air seems to change, bringing the rich scent of black cake baking in the oven and the savory aroma of garlic pork curing in the jar.

In homes from the coast to the hinterland, the tradition of sprucing up the house by scrubbing walls and hanging new curtains remains a cherished ritual.

It is a physical way to welcome new blessings. The excitement for Christmas morning pep-

perpot and homemade sorrel connects us to our history.

This year, the spirit of the season has spilled out of our living rooms and onto our streets, thanks to a government committed to celebrating our unique identity.

The heart of these public festivities is the "One Guyana Christmas Village and Supermarket" on Main Street. Launched earlier this month, this initiative has turned the avenue into a dazzling corridor of light and sound that does more than

just entertain; it uplifts.

By placing the "One Guyana Supermarket" at the centre of the festivities, the government has created what President Dr. Irfaan Ali calls a "marketplace of dreams."

Here, the focus is on local excellence, giving small business owners, farmers, and artisans a chance to showcase local products, from cassareep to handcrafted gifts. It is a wonderful mix of economic opportunities and cultural pride, reminding us that buying local is an act of patriotism that

strengthens the whole nation.

Beyond Main Street, the transformation of the historic Stabroek Market Square shows a strong symbol of renewal.

Through the teamwork of the First Lady’s Office and the Ministry of Local Government, a space often connected with busy shopping has been turned into a "renewed community hub."

The recent lighting ceremony and concert drew hundreds of people even in the rain. It showed that our public spaces can be safe

and beautiful places for families and celebrations.

The glowing Christmas tree and festive lights at the square are a source of joy for every commuter and vendor who passes by.

They brighten up daily life with the warmth of the holidays.

Supporting these main areas is the Farmers’ Christmas Market at the Kingston Seawall Esplanade, another effort highlighting our local producers.

These government-led actions have successfully created a "Guyanese

Christmas tourism package."

They ensure that the warmth we feel at home is reflected in our public squares. As we enjoy the steel pan performances and the laughter of children painting gingerbread houses, we are reminded that unity is not just for the season, but a national value.

This Christmas, amidst the lights of Main Street and the renewed glow of Stabroek, we are celebrating not just a holiday, but the rising spirit of One Guyana.

IN the Western world, classified documents are generally released between 40 and 60 years. Based on the nature of the historical events and people still living, the documents are made public 60 years after.

In most circumstances, the documents are redacted.

For example, the declassified documents in relation to the American request to the British Government to assist in removing Premier Cheddi Jagan are heavily redacted. One CIA document dated July 17, 1964, about the bombing of the Michael Forde Bookshop has parts that are wiped out.

Now imagine a man at 50 years becomes the Prime Minister or President of his country. His government falls because a particular unpleasant incident in his past is revealed. His deputy assumes power. Suppose his deputy was working with a foreign

intelligence agency to bring down the Prime Minister or President? The fallen leader will never know what his deputy did because he would have to live to 110 years before he knows what his friend did to him.

The closet person to President Forbes Burnham that Burnham trusted at a deep level was Elvin Mc David.

Long after the PNC lost power, Mr McDavid told me in his home in Queenstown that the Burnham government had a well-placed informant in the WPA’s leadership. I tried my utmost to ask Mr McDavid for the name, but he told me to “stop it.”

Hamilton Green in his home told me that the PNC government knew everything the WPA was doing. Green went so far, in my recorded interview, to tell me that they knew that Ohene Koama had guns in his car trunk and the police were waiting for him.

Koama left a WPA meeting

in Tiger Bay and travelled home in South Ruimveldt.

The police intercepted him in South Ruimveldt and killed him. Only persons high in the WPA leadership knew Koama had those guns in his car.

Koama was killed in 1979. Classified documents on the mole(s) inside the WPA will not be released until 2040. Eusi Kwayana is 100. Clive Thomas is 89.

Rupert Roopnaraine is 85.

Will they be around to know who that mole was?

The AFC was born in 2005. It had deep and extensive connections with the USAID that helped to form and fund it. We have to wait for another 50 years through declassified American documents to know who the key players in the AFC were that the USAID chaperoned. Will the current founders of the AFC be around the next 50 years given their current age?

This column was written on the basis of the reactions I

got yet again about my pieces on Martin Carter.

I did two pieces on Carter.

One was on the 14th. Based on the response to that, I did another piece last Saturday.

This column is in response to the reaction I got from the Saturday piece.

This is my last reflection on Martin Carter for a long time to come. I have written revisionist, iconoclastic history on Carter. I believe my arguments and points are valid and plausible and cannot easily be rebutted.

I am concluding my discussion on Carter with a comment from a well-known Guyanese who defied my request to name him. I got four comments from my Saturday piece, but I will reply to only one of them.

This gentleman said that Mrs Janet Jagan admired

Carter intensely and was the person solely responsible for Carter being honoured when he died with a burial place in the Seven Ponds. He said Mrs Jagan would have been furious at anyone referring to Carter as a spy. I was annoyed but held back my anger because I respected this gentleman.

Mrs Jagan died without knowing that British intelligence had a mole inside the PPP leadership in the 1950s.

It was only through declassified MI5 documents that we now know that and that his code name was Lascar.

Mrs Jagan died years before MI5 declassified its files on the PPP party in the 1950s and the PPP government in the 1950s. Both Dr Cheddi Jagan and Mrs Jagan died without knowing about Lascar. Had they lived after the

MI5 files were released, there is no doubt in my mind they would have reflected on who Lascar might possibly be.

Because Mr Burnham was disliked through his autocratic government, many people who would have been alive today would probably want to point to Burnham as Lascar as former President Ramotar did. But logical deduction and circumstantial evidence indict Carter.

I have made my point. I am finished for now with the Carter controversy, unless I see an intellectually based rebuttal to my work on Carter.

GHK Lall: a model of Reprobation?

GHK Lall has a daily attack column in the Kaieteur News. He dedicates every line to deriding every action of President Ali and his government. Given the results of the last elections and the robust performance of Dr Ali, Lall does not see a strong government and a weak opposition.

He sees a one-party state committing every atrocity under the sun.

He even sees the number of cloudy days as a suspicious government undertaking. While Lall is out there casting aspersions, he is yet to properly defend potent allegations of links to, and actions taken to facilitate gold-smuggling by the embattled Mohameds, while he (Lall) was the head of the Gold Board.

Further, GHK Lall has not uttered a word to clarify accusations of not only embellishing his accomplishments, but outrightly concocting an academic and professional profile that does not exist in the real world, an unflinching, audacious liar in full ‘superfluousity.’ It would therefore not be difficult to associate Lall with terms such as diddle, chicanery and pseudo-intellectual flimflam.

Phoney moonlighters such as GHK Lall were part of the bad omen that was unleashed on this nation when President Granger rubbed the gerontological genie lamp.

As if immersed in the opening scene of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” we saw the resurrection of some pale, wishy-washy, old, vapid, tired and retired gully creepers, Lall being Exhibit A and the poster-boy.

Because of their deeply flawed middle-class instincts, the leadership of the AFC was happy to facilitate the sudden apparition of these political discarnates. Raphael Trotman, then leader of the AFC and Minister of Natural Resources, was

willing to overlook, and possibly stifle an army of young, talented and qualified people with solid contributions to his party’s development, in favour of GHK Lall to head the Gold Board.

I often clashed with the cabalist inner temple of the AFC leadership over their inability to reckon “political dividend.” When making an administrative appointment, leaders must also calculate the political dividends the governing party is likely to receive from each appointee over time. People, the ilk of Lall had no political capital from which to extract a dividend that could have helped to win the 2020 or any subsequent elections.

GHK Lall was looking for his place in the sun. Apart from artifice, he brought neither new ideas, financial support nor political suasion. He was simply a barren, opportunistic gatherer who benefitted from the gerontological predilection and approbation of the APNU+AFC, and for some time, was able to fool the gullible. The simple question is, what has Lall contributed politically or administratively to the Gold Board that any of the displaced younger and more vibrant politically immersed people could not have? There is enough on the public record directly from Lall that can be termed as barefaced lies that exposes the totality of his outpourings snugly under the classification, “incredible.”

It was easy for Trotman and the AFC to find Lall attractive, because they didn’t bother themselves with inculcating new leaders, exposing new people to administrative leadership or showed any interest in the development or growth of anyone outside the tight cabal. So that, any mature person who peddles snake-oiled credentials, purveys political Ponzi schemes coupled with

feigned middle-class membership, AFC will plunge head first with.

I challenge either Nigel Hughes, Cathy Hughes, Raphael Trotman, David Patterson or Khemraj Ramjattan to offer the name of just one person (young or otherwise) that they, either individually or together mentored or exposed to leadership that eventually gained any form of national recognition, or that produced any form of political dividend which the AFC can cash in on today.

It is not surprising that the AFC is now relegated to a barren social club of jaded, middle-class old guardsmen with no young leaders of any stripe to move the party forward, dividends of their political

investment.

Lall denied the existence of a document containing the names of the Mohameds in relation to suspected gold- smuggling during his tenure on the Gold Board. Within hours he ‘get skin up’

Trotman admitted that as minister, he was aware of a dossier from the US Government, shared with the Gold Board, that contained the names of the Mohameds.

Lall is still faced with a myriad of conspiracy

theories, for which no plausible body of information is available to extricate him from allegations that, at the very least, he turned a blind eye to prolific levels of gold trans-shipment and smuggling, which occurred under his tenure.

I guess Lall thinks that by washing his mouth daily on every conceivable government policy, we will somehow forget his record of debasement. Lall has no moral rectitude to lecture anyone on the virtues

of governance. Shakespeare has a question concerning “the state of Denmark” and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might ask, “can you smell what Lall is cooking?” In comes Volda Lawrence with an apt answer, “sink a fish.”

UN agencies welcome news of famine reduction in the Gaza Strip - warn fragile gains could be reversed without increased, sustained support

THE following is the full text of a joint press release issued recently by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World

Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organizaton (WHO): “The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis for Gaza confirms that no areas

of the Strip are currently classified in famine following the October ceasefire and improved humanitarian and commercial access. This welcome progress remains extremely fragile as the population con-

tinues to struggle with massive infrastructure destruction and collapsed livelihoods and local food production, given restrictions on humanitarian operations.

“Without sustained, large-scale expansion of food, livelihood, agriculture and health assistance, together with increased commercial inflows, hundreds of

malnutrition through April next year. Four governorates (North Gaza, Gaza Governorate, Deir al-Balah, and Khan Younis) are currently classified in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) through April 2026, with Gaza Governorate downgraded from the previous Famine classification. This phase still indicates severe food insecurity marked

limited access to basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, health care, and the widespread destruction of cropland, livestock, fishing activities, roads and other critical infrastructure pose tremendous challenges for people and for ongoing relief efforts.

– Ministry’s SPU takes over Princess Street Road Project after contractor terminated

THE Ministry of Public Works’ Special Projects Unit (SPU) has taken over the Princes Street road expansion project following the recent termination of the contractor due to poor performance.

The project was originally awarded to Yhardram & Sons Construction Establishment.

During an inspection of the $631 million road project last Monday, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill stated that the contractor had failed to meet the contractual obligations.

“The contractor has failed to execute his contractual obligations.

Not only did he fail to execute his contractual obligations, but he also left the thoroughfare in a mess, causing inconvenience to residents

The minister also underscored the importance of the project, noting that it is intended to facilitate the smooth flow of westward traffic along the corridor.

He said that the SPU is now in charge and that residents and road users can expect the immediate commencement of rehabilitation works to improve traffic flow and accessibility along the critical corridor.

“So immediate relief is here to the residents of Princes Street, and all the users of Princes

of Princes Street, putting in better drainage arrangements so that when the traffic comes off of Cemetery Road to four lanes, we will have an upgraded Princes Street to help move the traffic westward,” Minister Edghill said.

The roadway spans 1,070 metres with a width of 10.37 metres and is designed to inte-

grate seamlessly with the Cemetery Road expansion, improving connectivity between Cemetery Road and High Street.

In addition, the government has prioritised stabilising and improving the road surface to ensure smoother travel for motorists and safer access for nearby residents. (DPI)

remain scarce and prohibitively expensive, leaving 79 percent of households unable to buy food or have access to clean water. No children are reaching minimum dietary diversity, and two-thirds experience severe food poverty, consuming only one to two food groups.

“The situation is w o r s e n e d b y o v e rcrowded makeshift shelters, damaged sewage systems, unreliable water supplies, and families burning wood or trash to stay warm.

Together, these conditions are driving disease outbreaks and accelerating the spread of respiratory infections, diarrhoea, and skin diseases, especially among children. “ FA O , U N I C E F, WFP and WHO stand ready to further scale up their responses. However, the strain caused by import restrictions,

access constraints and major funding gaps is severely hindering their capacity to operate at the necessary scale, particularly for interventions supporting food security, nutrition, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, agriculture and livelihood recovery.

“Gaza’s farmers, herders and fishers are ready to restart food production, but they cannot do so without immediate access to basic supplies and funding,’ said Rein Paulsen, Director of FAO's Office of Emergencies and Resilience. ‘The ceasefire has opened a narrow window to allow life-sustaining agricultural supplies to reach the hands of vulnerable farmers. Only funding and expanded and sustained access will allow local food production to resume and reduce dependence on external aid.’

“Gaza's children are no longer facing deadly famine, but they remain in grave danger. After more than two years of unrelenting conflict, children's bodies and developing brains carry deep, lasting scars,’ said Lucia Elmi, UNICEF Director of Emergency Operations. ‘Food is now in markets, but many families simply cannot afford to buy it. Health facilities are barely functioning, clean water and sanitation services are scarce, and winter is bringing increasing suffering to displaced people huddling in makeshift shelters. These fragile gains could vanish overnight if fighting resumes.

We need sustained humanitarian access, restored basic services, and above all, lasting peace. Gaza's children have suffered enough.

The world cannot turn away now.’

“Once again, we

have shown that we can push back on famine when we have the access, security and funding to deliver food and vital support,’ said Ross Smith, WFP Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response. ‘Now is the time to double down on these gains and ensure people can reliably access essential services.

WFP stands committed to support families in Gaza to move from aid dependency towards self-sufficiency and a future free of hunger and grounded in hope, stability, and prosperity.’

“The ceasefire has created space for recovery, but it has not erased the damage of two years of conflict.

Only fifty per cent of Gaza's health facilities are partially functional and many have been damaged during the conflict,’ said Altaf Musani, WHO's Direc-

tor for Humanitarian and Disaster Management. “Even functioning health facilities face shortages of essential supplies and equipment which are subject to complex entry procedures and restrictions with many classified as potentially dual use.

Malnutrition remains high, especially among children and women.

WHO is supporting seven severe acute malnutrition stabilization centers across the Gaza Strip. Much more is needed to address the vast health needs. To scale up life-saving services and expand access to care, WHO urgently calls for the expedited approval and entry of essential medical supplies, equipment, and prefabricated hospital structures.’

CALL TO ACTION “ FA O , U N I C E F, WFP and WHO urge all parties to: guaran-

tee sustained, safe, unimpeded and timely humanitarian and commercial access across Gaza; lift restrictions on essential imports, including agricultural inputs, food commodities, nutrition and healthcare supplies; rapidly scale up funding for essential services including food, nutrition, health, water and sanitation, agricultural and livelihood support to prevent further deterioration and enable rehabilitation and recovery and reactivate local food production and value chains.

The agencies warn that without decisive action now, the gains made since the ceasefire could unravel quickly. Only access, supplies and funding at scale can prevent famine from returning and help Gaza move from survival to recovery.”

Over 200 children of Fort Island, nearby communities enjoy Christmas festivities

MORE than 200 children accompanied by adults and parents were feted on Saturday at the fourth annual Christmas party and Christmas tree light-up held on Fort Island, Essequibo River.

The event was hosted

by Community Health Worker, Pretty Debideen, her family, and donor partners.

Among the attractions were Santa Claus and Mrs Claus, who were there to spread Christmas cheer and to distribute toys to the excited children.

There were also Santa helpers and volunteers who came together to ensure that the children had an enjoyable time with lots of food, drinks and goodies available.

The Christmas party started just after lunch.

The children who came out in their numbers were ferried from St. Lawrence, Morashee, Baboon Hole, Upper, Lower Bonasika, Bonasika Mission, Quarter Benabo, Bendroff, Hubu, Namless, Caria Caria and other riverine villages via boat to Fort Island.

Debideen told this publication that a lot of effort went into ensuring that the children had something to take home for the holidays.

She added that this was her way of giving back to society and it is a family tradition that was started a few years ago by herself and children.

Debideen reported that some of the donors who contributed to the

event included Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill; Mike West, owner of Medina Restaurant; Mike Gibson, David Mahmalji and others.

She expressed her gratitude for the support, noting that family, friends and others also contributed to the success of the event. She emphasised that she was happy to be able to spread cheer in keeping with the spirit of the Christmas season.

A solid meal of fried rice with chicken, dhal puri with chicken curry, rice, duck curry, beef curry and boil and fried channa were served as lunch, along with a goodie bag, each containing festive cakes, candies and beverages. Toys were later distributed.

At 18:00hrs, the Christmas tree was lit.

Meanwhile, Mahmalji told the Guyana Chronicle that he first came to Guyana in 1989 to manage Hunt Oil company and fell in love with the country.

While here, he met and married a Guyanese woman and later made Guyana his second home.

He added that this year, he took some time out to visit Fort Island because he wanted to be involved in the spreading of joy and cheer to the children, who reside in riverine areas.

He is a retiree and has made it his mission to give back to society.

“Aside from contributing to the event, I am really happy to be here to spend time with the peo-

ple, especially the children, the future generation, and 35 years ago, I went on a similar event at Santa Mission with some friends to deliver good cheer to the people there,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of boys were observed

happily playing with their toys following the distribution exercise.

Adita Wahid, Samuel Joseph and Delroy Wong said this was their first time at the event and they were enjoying it.

Somaria Singh, Veda Evans and Angelina Harry

were also having a good time.

Annette Singh from Upper Bonasika Creek told the Guyana Chronicle that she brought three children from the community with her. She explained that they will be hosting a similar event at

the El Shaddai Church.

Singh said that they would be hosting 30 children from the riverine areas and toys will be distributed to them as well.

She was one of the many volunteers who contributed to the success of the event.

Works underway to quell stench at Eccles landfill site WORKS are underway at the Haags Bosch/Eccles landfill site to address complaints about foul odours from residents of nearby communities.

This was according to Minister of Local

Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand who visited the landfill on Sunday.

“The residents of Eccles and Windsor [Estates] and Providence, used to get really foul

smell and I know because I myself had complained about it a few times, and it used to be from garbage that was uncovered,” Minister Manickchand said.

She noted that the foul smell usually occurs

during the rainy season and in the evenings.

According to the minister, addressing the situation at Haags Bosch was a priority when she took office.

“This was one of the first places I visited

when I came into office, and we immediately began covering garbage,” she said, adding that the conditions previously observed were unac-

ready improved, saying, “Actually, I don't get any smells anymore, and residents would be able to say the same thing.”

“President Ali has said very clearly… what kind of community we want.

“You could go into your backyard, you can barbecue, you can plant your vegetables. You can just chill out after a hard day. And so that's the effort,” the minister said.

To this end, Manickchand noted that conditions at the site have al-

managed by contractors, the minister said the state had a responsibility to intervene to protect residents’ quality of life.

“The state, I believe, had a duty to fix this and fix it quickly. And so we stepped up from the ministry,” she said, noting that contractors would also be required to adhere to standards as per contract going forward.

She went on to explain that only a small section of the landfill remains to be covered, with work expected to be completed shortly.

“So, this is just the small space we have left to cover, and we hope within the next two days to be able to completely cover this,” she said.

Gov’t will continue push to achieve universal access to secondary education - Minister Parag says

WITH significant investment and expansion taking place in the education sector over the last five years, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, has noted that sights are set on achieving universal access to secondary education over the next few years.

Minister Parag made this known while speaking at a recent event during which she noted that the country has already achieved universal primary education and is now steadily advancing towards full secondary-level access, underpinned by large-scale infrastructural development and policies aimed at inclusivity. “ We h a v e n o w achieved universal primary education. We're moving towards universal secondary education. We have made from nurs-

ery to tertiary free. That means that there is access, that there is inclusivity,” she said.

Minister Parag credited the progress made in the sector to investments over the past five years, pointing to what she described as extensive groundwork laid by the current administration.

“In the last five years, the government of Guyana, under the excellent leadership of Dr Mohammed Irfan Ali, did heavy lifting in education, in terms of infrastructure,” she said.

As part of the investments, a major focus of the government’s education drive has been addressing geographic and access challenges in remote and hinterland regions.

Against this backdrop, the government has pursued an aggressive school construction programme with schools constructed

across all regions in the country between 2020 and 2025.

Minister Parag added that the expansion of infrastructure has been central to making education more accessible nationwide. “So, we're making access to education easier. We're making inclusivity a priority for education, and we're hoping that by the time next five years, we'll be able to achieve universal access to secondary education,” she stated.

The minister said the country is at a pivotal stage in its development and noted that as the nation changes rapidly, it comes with opportunities and responsibility.

To this end, the minister reiterated that the government would continue its push to ensure there is access to education at all levels across the country.

Everywhere the team went, they were met with joyful laughter, cheerful greetings, and the infectious happiness of children.

Parents expressed heartfelt gratitude as they watched their sons and daughters receive gifts, many capturing the moment with photos and warm embraces. For some families, this simple act of kindness made the season brighter and more meaningful.

The distribution was

not only about toys, but about connection— bringing communities together, uplifting spirits, and reinforcing the values of generosity and compassion.

Minister Ramraj said the distribution served as a reminder that Christmas is about sharing joy, spreading hope, and standing in

unity with one another.

He said that he was happy that children received a toy.

As the smiles of children lit up villages across Region Two, it became clear that the joy of Christmas is greatest when it is shared.

“I am very grateful for the gift for my chil-

dren as a single mother sometimes it's hard and at least all my children received” a mother said Through this thoughtful initiative, the season was made memorable for many, leaving behind lasting happiness and reinforcing the message that no child is forgotten.

Gun, ‘ammo’ found in murder suspect’s car

POLICE ranks, during an intelligence-led operation on Friday, arrested a 27-year-old male of Blueberry Hill, Linden, at a popular night spot in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

According to a po-

lice press release, the suspect is under police investigation in relation to the alleged murder of Samuel Marciano, which occurred on November 2, 2025, at 14 Miles, Issano Landing, Middle Mazaruni.

“Following the arrest, a search was conducted on a motor vehicle being used by the suspect.

During the search, ranks discovered one 9MM Taurus pistol along with eleven (11) live 9MM rounds which were found

Klass explained that Caria Caria, which is on mainland, is a developing village. It is located in a remote place and river transportation is very expensive to reach the nearest shopping district, Parika.

He is of the view that a general store selling building materials and hardware should be established in the village to reduce the costs for

the village has about 280 locals, most of whom are related. It is a close-knit community where residents are always willing to assist each other.

He said the village spread is about six miles and it is bordered by two creeks, Caparwarrie on the north and Awarria on the south.

Caria Caria has a primary school and a nursery school, a guest house, a health post, a community centre ground and building, an administrative building, a funeral home, an ICT hub, and a sports bar.

Klass related that he, like other residents, are very pleased with the recent community-based projects.

He pointed out that in addition to the general

store, he would like to see the village become a tourist hotspot, offering visitors a unique and nature-centred experience.

Klass added that the main economic activities of residents include small-scale farming and fishing. The young people

often seek employment outside of the village.

Recently, residents have benefitted from much-needed drainage and irrigation interventions while lands were being prepared for farming.

CWI puts Breakout League on hold amid packed calendar CMC – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken the decision to put next year’s Breakout League on hold due to a packed international and domestic schedule.

Hosted by CWI in collaboration with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the inaugural six-team Breakout League was held in Trinidad and Tobago from April 25 to May 10, 2025.

However, in a CWI release on Saturday, the organisation said a hectic schedule meant the 2026 edition could not be held during that period.

“CWI, in collaboration with the CPL, has completed a review of the proposed window for the Breakout T20 League in 2026.

“Given the increasingly congested international and domestic cricket calendar, coupled with preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World

Cup, it has been determined that the tournament cannot be staged in its originally planned window,” the release stated.

While no new dates were given, CWI’s chief executive officer, Chris Dehring said the competition, which was won by the Trinidad and Tobago Legions, remained a key component of the region’s player development pathway and a critical bridge to regional, franchise, and international cricket.

“While we have not yet identified a suitable window for the Breakout League in 2026, it remains an important pillar of our domestic tournament strategy.

“This pause, particularly during a stringent fiscal peri-

od, provides an opportunity to assess the league’s structure and to determine whether it is optimally positioned within the World Cup cycle to deliver the best possible developmental outcomes,” Dehring said.

“We must cast a wider net across the Caribbean to ensure we are identifying players with the skill, athleticism, and mindset required for the modern game, including those who may emerge later or who have not yet had sustained exposure to elite environments.

“That requires stronger scouting, improved data capture, and clearer alignment between the Breakout League and our high-performance systems, so that progression

to the senior international level is intentional and measurable.

“With the Under-19 Men’s and Senior Men’s teams focused on upcoming World Cups, this is an especially demanding period for our players. While the Breakout League remains part of our forward planning, it will not be staged in the same window.

“Both CWI and CPL agree that the tournament must have sufficient space to make a meaningful developmental impact and to truly engage our fans. We will continue to look for a space for this event in 2026,” he added.

Meanwhile, chief executive officer of the CPL, Pete Russell said it was important to ensure the competition’s long-term viability and developmental value.

“The CPL fully supports the Breakout League and its role within Caribbean cricket.

“Although we have not yet been able to secure a suitable window for 2026, our commitment to the competition remains unchanged. This period will allow us to refine the format, timing, and supporting structures to ensure the league fulfils its intended role within the regional development system, both now and in the future,” Russell said.

Aruba’s Lynell Koolman who won the ‘Lord of the Ring’ event finished in second place overall for the $4000 USD. George Dutton of the UK was third after winning the ‘Going Dark’ event allowing him to pocket the $3000 USD for the bronze medal finish.

The senior RX Female class saw Guyanese Delice Adonis topping the ‘Row Climb Run’ event but she could not finish in the top three which was won by USA’s Bryleigh Hansen who snapped up the USD $5000 prize.

Hansen won the ‘Hammer Up and down’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ to grab first place ahead of Aruba’s Veronique Antens and Heather Hudson also of the USA. Meanwhile Devesh Rameshwar showed his chops to claim victory in the U15 category.

Guyana’s Rameshwar won overall Under 15 Title ahead of Guyanese Samuel Alexander and Suraj Jhaman who captured second and third place respectively.

Alexander copped $750 USD and Jhaman $500 USD for placing in the top three.

Rameshwar took the ‘Row Climb Run’, ‘Hammer Up and down’, ‘Lord

of the rings’, ‘Going Dark’ and ‘Walking Dead’ events to take a clean sweep of the five events which incorporated weight lifting gymnastics and aerobics.

The Scale Female category was won by Pauline Vackier of Aruba who took home the $3000 USD on offer for the overall winner.

She won the ‘Row Climb Run’, ‘Hammer Up and down’ and ‘Going Dark’.

The ‘Jumping Jacks’ and ‘Walking Dead’ was won by Shanika Estwick of Guyana who collected third place, Second place went to Ester Vermeulen of Aruba.

The scale male division was won by Christen Goeloe of Aruba who claimed a $3000 USD prize money Guyana’s Vladimir Woodroffe copped third overall after winning outright the ‘Jumping Jacks’ and ‘hammer Up and down’ categories, he finished with $1000 for his efforts, The 2nd place winner was Dimitri Stomp of Suriname who collected $2000 USD. The competition saw over 60 cross fit athletes emanating from the around the world to compete for the 40,000 USD on offer in prizes.

The Guyanese would overcome athletes from the USA, United Kingdom, Aruba, Suriname, France, French Guiana and Curacao to collect handsome winnings.

Australia retains the Ashes in 11 days (ESPNCRICINFO) - IN the third Test, they rose again, but there was to be no Christmas miracle.

Despite a gutsy fight from England's lower order that hauled an already lost cause deep into the afternoon session of the final day, Australia held their nerve - and their catches - to seal the 2025-26 Ashes with their third victory in a row on only the 11th day of the series.

The winning moment was delivered by Scott Boland, who induced a thick edge from England's No. 11, Josh Tongue, straight to Marnus Labuschagne at first slip, who swallowed his fourth take of a truly sensational display in the field. That left Brydon Carse high and dry on 39 not out; his efforts, alongside fighting but ultimately thwarted knocks of 60 and 47 from Jamie Smith and Will Jacks, had given England genuine hope that their performances at other key moments of the Test, and the series, simply hadn't warranted.

Labuschagne's efforts included his second one-handed screamer of the match, this time to prise out Jacks at first slip, and it was a fitting reminder of one of the key differences between the sides. The winning margin of 82 runs was exactly the same score that Usman Khawaja had reached on the first day of the match, after being dropped by Harry Brook on 5, while the 71 runs that

Travis Head made after the same fielder had reprieved him on 99 would prove to be the death knell of England's series hopes.

For the first time in the series, the Player-of-theMatch award would elude Mitchell Starc, but his claim to the Compton-Miller Medal is now beyond any further discussion. On a day when Australia's resources were stretched by a potentially series-ending injury to Nathan Lyon, Starc stepped up with the first three of the final four wickets required. His left-arm angles and command of seam and swing were able to extract rare life from an unthreatening Adelaide surface, and once armed with the harder new ball, the end was always nigh despite England's doughtiest day's work of the series.

The day of reckoning had dawned with 17 overs remaining until Australia's new ball, so Lyon and Cameron Green shared the early workload to keep the senior seamers fresh. Despite some early alarms against the short ball, Smith and Jacks settled quickly into a confident stand, with Smith smashing a brace of sixes over the leg-side off spin and seam alike to whittle the requirement below 200.

Guyana's youth Chess stars overcome travel chaos to ‘medal’ in Puerto Rico IN sports, they say the most important ability is availability. But for the Guyana National Youth Chess team, just getting to the board proved to be their most formidable opponent of the week.

The Guyanese contingent arrived at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Youth Chess Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, staring down a nightmare scenario: a flight cancellation that forced the entire team to forfeit their opening round. Yet, what followed wasn't a collapse—it was a masterclass in resilience.

Kataleya Sam continues to prove she is one of the region's most clinical finish-

ers. The 12-year-old standout, already a former U-10 bronze medalist, ignored the first-round setback to storm into the U-12 Girls’ top five.

The turning point came in round eight against the Dominican Republic’s top seed, Amelia Maia Perrone Bueno (1512).

In a high-stakes strategic battle, Sam waited for the slightest crack in her opponent’s armour. When Perrone Bueno blinked, Sam pounced—winning a pawn and converting a masterfully controlled endgame into a statement victory.

Sam finished with five points, reaffirming her status as a future Woman Candidate Master (WCM) pow-

erhouse.

The "Late Arrival" narrative didn't stop with Sam. Her teammates spent the rest of the tournament taking down tournament favourites: The Upset of the Week: National Junior Champion Kyle Couchman (2004) found himself paired against the field's highest-rated player, FIDE Master Santiago Ruiz, in round two.

Despite trailing in experience and an exchange in the middle game, Couchman launched a relentless kingside assault. Ruiz eventually cracked under the pressure, handing Couchman a massive win on his way to a 16th-place finish.

GFF Super 16 knock-out cup…

The Streak-Breaker: Current Women’s Champion WCM Aditi Joshi (1749) delivered the upset of the tournament in the U-16 Girls’ section.

Facing the undefeated tournament leader, WCM Liana Pieter of Curaçao, Joshi dismantled the Colle System with precision.

Exploiting light-square weaknesses, she forced Pieter into a resignation, handing the leader her first and only loss of the week. Joshi finished sixth overall.

The Undefeated Wall: Candidate Master Sachin Pitamber (1950) was arguably the team's most consistent force. Despite missing round one and being side-

lined by illness in round eight, Pitamber didn't lose a single match, finishing with three wins and four draws in the U-16 Absolute Category.

The depth of the Guyanese squad was on full display in the younger brackets. Vir Narine (U10) showed incredible grit, missing the first two rounds and still clawing back to 13th place with four victories. Meanwhile, Abel Fernandez and Nicholas Zhang both ground out impressive 4.5-point hauls in the U-12 and U-14 categories respectively.

Perhaps the most promising debut came from unrated Emma John, who held

her own on the international stage with 3.5 points, including key draws against seasoned opponents from Suriname and Jamaica.

The team touched down in Georgetown on Sunday, December 21st, carrying more than just rating points.

"The character shown by these young athletes after such a demoralising start is exceptional," the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) noted. Under the guidance of Head of Delegation Tanya Warren-Clement, coaches FM Anthony Drayton and CM Taffin Khan, the team turned a travel disaster into a testament to Guyanese fighting spirit.

GABA U-23 knock-out Championship

Zeelugt and Strikers secure major upsets Stabroek Eagles and Bounty Colts advance ZEELUGT and Strikers FC delivered stinging upsets on Saturday when they clashed with two Elite League sides in the yearend Super 16 cup football competition played at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) NTC at Providence.

Zeelugt first came up against Elite League side Den Amstel and the West Coast Demerara neighbours went toe to toe for much of the contest.

However it was an early goal off the cleat of Joheny Mendoza in the 27th minute that separated the two teams.

Zeelugt then managed to hold their own against the Den Amstel side despite a string of near misses to capture a needle victory at the end of regulation time.

In the other Super 16 fixture for the evening, Strikers FC achieved a surprise 3-2 win over Monedderlust.

The clash was no easy win for Strikers.

They got their opening goal compliments of Von Harding who caressed the back of the net 6 minutes into the match before Monedderlust quickly equalised in the 7th minute off a strike from Royan Solomon.

a goal on the verge of half time as they went into the half up 2-1.

It seemed as though the game was a done deal as Monedderlust held the sway for most of the remainder of the contest but Vitals Benjamin brought Strikers back into the contest in the 70th

minute with his goal which tied the scores 2-2.

Harding returned when they needed him most to record a double and shock Monedderlust with an 86th minute goal to make it 3-2 which they defended to the end with the win.

STABROEK Eagles and Bounty Colts picked up huge wins when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) continued its U-23 basketball Championship on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with semi-final action.

Colts grabbed a 118-76-point win over Nets when they clashed at the homestretch avenue facility.

Kimol Grimmond led all scorers with a bombastic 26 points alongside Jaden Simon who dropped 20 in the win by 42 points.

It was Colts that started well, leading the first quarter 28-23.

They then kept their foot on the gas to extend their lead 56-40 at the half time.

They would dominate without let up to lead the third quarter 96-54 before closing out the contest in the fourth 118-76.

Also contributing to the win for Colts was skipper Domitre Rankin, Carmelo Man-Son-Hing and Paul France with 18, 11 and 16 points respectively.

Net’s Peter Langavine led his side with 18 in a losing

effort with 13 from Chris Perez.

Stabroek Eagles also defeated Worthmanville Pacesetters 76-62 to advance to the finals.

It was another one-sided affair as Eagles led in all four quarters 18-15, 43-27, 67-46 and 76-62 in their contest.

Kadeem Beckles was Eagles top offensive player as he scored 19 points with Alaffin Jospeh playing well for his 10 points.

Pacesetters Benkham King showed fight as he finished with 17 points in the loss.

GBA’s National Boxing Championships marred by five walkovers

By Sean Devers WATCHED by a small gathering, which included Olympian Keevin Allicock and the world-rated Jackman sisters, the opening night of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA’s) National Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium on Saturday night left much to be desired and was marred by five walkovers.

Of the five walkovers, four pugilists from the Police Boxing Gym were guilty of the no-shows.

Since the death of former GDF and National Head Coach Terrence Poole, the standard of the boxers from the army fighters has taken a nose dive.

Set to start on Friday night, internal issues resulted in the card being reduced to two days with 19 bouts carded for Saturday night.

Malcolm Williams of the GDF gave a walkover to Police’s Oasis Prince.

GDF’s Colin Lewis stopped Police’s Clifton Graham in the 63-67 kg weight division in the quarter-final, before Shemar Sooklall of the GDF abandoned his fight in round two in the semi-final as Lewis qualified for last night’s final.

After beating GDF’s Terrence Barton in the quarter finals, Richard Moore lost in the 60-63 kg semi-final to Patrick Harvey. Harvey, from FYF, had got the better of GDF’s Brandon Jarrick in the third bout of the night in the quarter-final action.

Joel Williamson (RHJ) beat Kevin Semple (Police) in the quarter-final of the 6063 Kgs bout, before the Berbician knocked out Damion France of the GDF in 1:40 in the first round.

Travis Inverery (FYF) beat Police’s Cary Pulin in the quarter-final of the 71-75 kg, before beating Prince in the semi-final.

Prince had earlier advanced to the semis via a walkover.
