THE government, as part of its community development vision, aims to make communities cleaner, safer and more modern.

Vice President and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, recently elaborated on President Dr Irfaan Ali’s five-year agenda, which will see investments in lighting, security and recreational spaces.

President Ali, during a recent address, spoke extensively on how his government intends on raising the quality of life for all, noting that every policy, every initiative, every programme, every project, targets this aim.

He said: “That vision is bold and is grounded in service. It is a vision of a Guyana that works for its people. A Guyana where opportunity is the birthright of every citizen.

A Guyana where our vast resources are the lifeblood of dignity, of hope, and of shared prosperity. A Guyana where Guyanese can work, live, and retire in communities that are safe, clean, and have adequate and comfortable amenities, where children can run free.

“In this era, when more Guyanese are working, earning, saving, and experiencing a better quality of life, their perfectly understandable expectation

is that they should be able to enjoy a certain level of comfort in the communities in which they live.

“We recognise that a modern community in Guyana should have, at a minimum, paved roads, concrete drains, clean carpets, welded streets, greenery and recreational spaces. No garbage, no stray animals, and no noise nuisances. These are minimum and eminently reasonable expectations and my government will meet these expectations.”

The President then turned his attention to Georgetown’s revitalisation plan, affirming that the government’s “plan of stronger, safer, more beautiful communities is not only for Georgetown.”

While stating that it will stretch all across Guyana, in every single region, President Ali said: “Sustainable communities are built on a shared commitment to use and care for the spaces in which we live. This is a commitment that requires responsibility, consistent action, and civic duty.

It is incumbent upon us to build social capital to nurture our living environment and develop a culture of care.”

The comprehensive city revival plan, developed with the support of the Kings Foundation, targets restoring Georgetown’s status

Earlier this year, President Dr Irfaan Ali joined hundreds of citizens across the country in a national clean-up exercise

as a source of national pride.

Over the past five years, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government has invested billions of dollars in infrastructural projects across the city, including upgrades to drainage systems, roads, and public spaces.

These efforts are part of a broader national strategy for sustainable urban development, with Georgetown as the focal point.

“In the next five years, we will continue to build the infrastructure for sustainable communities that are safe and clean, where streets are well lit, where drains are not clogged or polluted, and where noise nuisances are no more.

Guyanese will be able to enjoy the basic right to affordable housing, clean water, proper drainage, and a clean and healthy environment,” President Ali

said.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Dr Jagdeo supported the President’s vision, noting that the government is committed to ensuring that citizens live in dignity and there are improved environmental standards including better drainage and regular garbage collection.

He further stated: “We don't want polluting businesses located in the centre of our communities. We don't want people to park their derelicts and other things on their parapets,” adding: “We're now looking for land to move out the people who are parking in some of the communities, the polluting business, so you can move it slightly out of the village, but those people to still have a chance to ply their trade. You know, not do it in a manner that's very disruptive.”

The Vice President also noted that in order to attain safer communities, the government is ensuring there are well-lit communities and he said they now have 94,000 street lights coming in the country, which they are going to start installing soon. “…We want safe communities. That means police outposts, a lot of technology, cameras, etc. This is

where, and we want a lot of recreational facilities, parks and playgrounds well maintained. So, that's the kind of place that we want our children to be brought up in and in which we want all of our people to live. That's the vision.

And we'll keep every day investing in every one of the budgets, we'll go closer to achieving that,” the Vice President said.

President Ali swears in Justice Rafiq Khan as seventh appellate judge

SENIOR Counsel Rafiq Turhan Khan was officially sworn in as a Justice of Appeal during a ceremony held on Tuesday at State House, presided over by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The appointment follows a recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission and is made in accordance with Article 128(1) of the Constitution of Guyana. Justice Khan’s swearing-in completes one of the seven appointments to the Court of Appeal announced earlier this year, marking the first time such a significant number of

judges were appointed to the appellate court simultaneously.

Delivering remarks at the ceremony, President Ali highlighted the critical role of the Court of Appeal within Guyana’s judicial system, describing it as a central safeguard in the administration of justice. The Court, he noted, serves as an essential intermediary between the High Court and Guyana’s apex court, the Caribbean Court of Justice, ensuring consistency, accountability, and the correction of judicial errors.

“With this appointment, we are not only securing the service of a jurist of exceptional calibre but also advancing judicial efficiency to ensure timely hearings and well-reasoned judgements,” the President said.

He added that access to fair and expeditious justice is vital to civic trust and social cohesion.

constitution and administer justice without fear or favour, with the president expressing confidence that he will bring diligence, intellectual rigour, and integrity to his new role.

The president also commended Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire, Chief Justice (ag) Justice Navendra Singh, and Director of Public Prosecutions Mrs Shalimar Ali-Hack for their ongoing efforts to modernise and strengthen Guyana’s judicial institutions through improved systems and processes.

“Strong and resilient systems are what ensure the survival and effectiveness of the justice we deliver,” President Ali noted, underscoring the importance of institutional reform along with individual excellence.

Guyana to host inaugural National Creative Industry Development Conference - in bid to support integration of culture, creativity into the wider economy

SIGNALLING a major push to integrate culture and creativity into the wider economy, Guyana in January will host its inaugural National Creative Industry Development Conference.

This was recently revealed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali who while outlining the government’s economic plans for the next five years in an address to the nation, stressed that culture and creativity are essential to Guyana’s development.

Guyana’s recent participation at CARIFESTA in Barbados in August was also cited as a clear demonstration of the administration’s ongoing support, with local artists continuing to gain recognition on the global stage.

The President noted that the mainstreaming of cultural and creative industries into the national development strategy has become a timely and necessary step.

Over the next five years, sustained investment in the sector is expected to enable artists to reach their full potential, while creating employment opportunities and generating income across the economy.

“As we work to integrate culture and creativity into the wider economy, our continued investment in these industries will see Guyanese artists reaching their true potential, creating jobs and generating income.”

As part of its long-term vision, the government plans to construct a new National Museum and establish a National Art Gallery to showcase the work

of Guyana’s leading visual artists. These institutions will be supported by digital infrastructure to market creative output locally and internationally. Additional plans include the development of a digital gallery to catalogue Guyanese visual art over the years, as well as a digital marketplace to facilitate the sale of local artwork.

Further investments are planned for fashion, film, music and literature, with a focus on incentives, talent development and commercial infrastructure. Among the proposed projects is a grand cultural market at Palmyra, alongside ongoing restoration works at heritage sites such as the Lamaha railway embankment in Georgetown, being undertaken in collaboration with The King’s Foundation. “ We ' r e c o m m i t t e d to investing in fashion, film, music and literature, focusing on incentives, talent development and commercial infrastructure like our planned grand cultural market at Palmyra. As well as the restoration work already on the way at locations such as the Lamaha railway embankment in Georgetown and elsewhere in the city in collaboration with the King's Foundation.”

The government’s aim is to move beyond in-

dividual projects to the deliberate development of a self-sustaining, globally competitive cultural and creative industrial sector.

The upcoming National Creative Industry Development Conference is expected to mark the first major step in advancing Guyana’s national orange economy.

The conference will seek to establish a clear policy framework, institutionalised support mechanisms, infrastructure development, innovation, integration and investment for the creative sector.

“Not only is the aim to deliver on every single one of these promises but

to go beyond them to the deliberate development of a self-sustaining, globally comparative, culturally cultural and creative industrial sector,” he said.

The President also emphasised that beyond economic returns, the orange economy serves as an important unifying force within Guyana’s diverse society.

He underscored the need for long-term development to be based on an integrated economic model in which agriculture supports industry, technology strengthens tradition, creativity is valued and opportunities are accessible to all, reinforcing the view that diversified economies are more resilient, balanced and inclusive.

“Our vision is based on a clear and evident premise that our economy is integrated, an economy where agriculture supports industry, where technology strengthens tradition, where creativity is valued, and where no talent is left behind because the system is too to support it. Economies that diversify are stronger, more resilient, more balanced, and more inclusive,” the President said.

Justice Delayed No More

FOR decades, Guyana's justice system has faced delays, backlogs, and the troubling reality that access to the courts seemed to depend on wealth rather than rights.

Citizens have watched cases sit idle for years, legal precedents collect dust and trust in the judiciary fade with each postponement.

In this context, the government's plan for judicial reform represents not just minor adjustments, but a true commitment to the constitutional promise that justice belongs to all Guyanese, not just the wealthy elite.

President Irfaan Ali's

vision for a fair, predictable, and efficient justice system directly addresses the democratic gaps that have long affected our courts.

The announcement of legislative reforms aimed at enhancing judicial accountability, along with practical technological upgrades and staff improvements, shows that the government grasps a fundamental truth that delayed justice is denied justice, and unevenly applied justice weakens the rule of law.

Vice President Jagdeo's clear example, showing that two citizens committing the same act can receive very different sentences seem-

ingly because of wealth, highlights the main injustice these reforms seek to fix.

This is not about political interference, it is about restoring the essential fairness that courts must uphold.

The practical measures being put in place inspire real confidence. The High Court's removal of civil backlogs and its shift to a paperless system demonstrate that technology can work effectively when implemented correctly.

The ongoing development of a magistrates' court case-management system, created with the help of the U.S. Department of Jus-

tice's National Center for State Courts, promises standardised, data-driven court operations by mid-2026.

These are not empty promises, but rather they are real milestones. Also important is the release of updated Laws of Guyana and law reports covering 2008 to 2021—initiatives that make legal knowledge accessible and ensure that judges follow consistent precedents instead of personal judgment.

The growth of judicial capacity through new appointments—10 puisne judges to the High Court, three Commissioners of Title, and nine magistrates

since 2023—addresses the ongoing understaffing that has hampered case processing.

The Judicial Service Commission's plan to hire judicial research assistants will strengthen the court's ability to handle complex cases effectively.

These personnel upgrades, along with electronic payment systems for fines and bail and real-time case-file access, change the judiciary from a paper-driven, personality-dependent system into a modern and transparent one.

However, the success of reform depends not on government announcements,

but on the judiciary's commitment to independence and accountability.

The reforms must strengthen, not weaken, judicial autonomy. The government's plan for judicial modernisation offers a route to that promised future. The real test now lies in whether these efforts lead to faster resolutions, consistent sentences, and renewed public trust.

If they succeed, Guyana's shift from a justice system plagued by delay and inequality to one marked by efficiency and fairness will be the government's most lasting achievement.

Dear Editor, “CHESTNUTS roasting on an open fire, jack frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir and folks dressed up like Eskimos…Although it’s been said, many times, many ways Merry Christmas to you.”

So, another year has almost passed, and Christmas is upon us once again. It is the time of year when Christians reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ whom they worship as their Lord and Saviour. While Christmas is a festive season that represents peace on earth and goodwill towards all mankind, our sympathy goes out to all those who are sick and bedridden in hospitals and to those who have lost loved ones during the year.

This Yuletide season should serve as a period of reflection on our lives and how we must redouble our efforts in 2026 to uplift others, live in peace and harmony and to make Guyana a

prosperous nation.

If there is ever a time when politics should take a holiday, that time is at Christmas when families come together to celebrate. It would be very easy to dwell on the negative, but in this blessed and joyous season, let us choose happiness over sadness and embrace the special joy of a Guyanese Christmas.

Those who can enjoy the warmth of the sunshine in Guyana and its fine dishes: pepperpot, curry, cook-up, garlic-pork, pot-roast chicken, ham, black cake and ginger beer should think of the cold winter their fellow Guyanese have to endure in the diaspora and are overwhelmed with nostalgia at this time of the year.

Christmas is a time of healing and goodwill to all mankind. What more appropriate time can there be for us Guyanese to forget the hurt, the animosity, the persecution, the frustration and the bitterness of the past?

We call on each one of

you to renew your spirit of love towards one another, hold out the hand of friendship and forgiveness to neighbours, friends and to those from whom we have been estranged and have done you wrong.

Let us recapture the spirit of the message that brought joy to the world 2000 years ago by the Baby of Bethlehem.

Let us celebrate and be happy and pledge to work together to free Guyana from the monsters of malevolence, unkindness, poverty and crime. We must spare no effort to understand the true meaning of peace, love and happiness.

In this festive season, we join our brothers and sisters to pray for Guyana as one nation, to make sure all the 83,000 square miles of our territory remain intact, the prosperity of all Guyanese and for commonsense and understanding to always prevail in their actions.

We must also pray for peace, happiness and goodwill towards all, hatred and

bitterness towards none and for love towards one another.

Perhaps the holidays will give our leaders of every ethnic background a genuine chance to harvest plans that will be inclusive of all in our society, embrace the new year as one of healing, comforting, atonement and co-operation.

There is no shortage of sharing and goodwill in Guyana, especially at this time of year. There are stories everywhere of people giving to the less fortunate, the homeless, the elderly and to children.

There are many more acts of kindness displayed throughout the holiday season but which are not reported.

To those who have extended and continue to extend a kind, courteous, and helping hand to others, we thank you for a job well done. For if that display of human compassion helps to change the life of just one person for the better, it would have been worth the effort.

The spirit of giving has

not been made easy for many because of the high cost of living. In fact, there are many others who wanted to give, but are not able to do so because they could hardly provide for their families.

However, the government has shown compassion in giving toys to children in almost every community across the country. But the true meaning of Christmas continues to elude many Guyanese because of their poverty and unbearable living conditions.

Too often, it is the greedy, not the needy; the rich and powerful and not the poor and the powerless who get most of the attention at Christmas.

We commend and admire those who are helping the poor, who through no fault of their own are struggling to make ends meet.

Our fervent wish in this festive season of goodwill is that all will put their shoulders to the wheel to help develop and build Guyana

so that all, not only a selected few, can share in the bounties of its prosperity.

We love politics but more importantly, we love Guyana and our fellow Guyanese, especially those who are dedicated and are working tirelessly not only for their own success but for others and the nation.

We graciously ask the Almighty to continue to bless our leaders, our beautiful, beloved and picturesque Guyana and its resilient, loving, caring, peaceful and God-fearing people. We remain proud of the people of Guyana and wish them a bright, successful and happy future and sincerely hope that they live to see and enjoy many more Christmases.

Saluting Rohan Kanhai at 90 not out

Dear Editor, ON December 26, 2025, Rohan Kanhai will celebrate his 90th birthday. While this is an important milestone for anyone, it is particularly important for our nation as a whole.

Rohan was indeed our country’s first superstar in sports. He bestrode the cricketing areas throughout the world like a giant. His batting was sheer genius as he played every stroke in the book and invented some of his own. He was a fantastic fielder, partic-

ularly in the slips and in his early stage was one of the best wicketkeepers of his time.

Rohan began his career in the 1950s. It was a very difficult period in our country. At that time the progressive forces in Guyana were confronting colonialism and imperialism as we fought for the independence of Guyana. That movement was led by a fellow villager of Rohan, the great Cheddi Jagan.

The anti-colonial struggle here had grasped the imagina-

tion of freedom-loving people the world over, but more particularly the people of Asia and Africa. The struggles in British Guiana, Kenya and South Africa had captured international headlines in the 1950s and 60s.

The Guyana cricketers of that period in many ways reflected the struggles of our people.

But no one more than Rohan with the bat and Lance Gibbs with the ball.

While batting, sometimes Rohan would ex-

plode and then no bowler could keep him down. It did not matter if it was pace or spin, he would hit them to all parts of the ground, seemingly merciless yet with an unmatched elegance.

We saw the same with Gibbs and the ball.

When he exploded, he was almost unplayable.

Rohan not only played many magnificent innings of which it is almost impossible to pick his best. They were all stupendous. Those cricket lovers who never saw the master “blasting

for runs” must be considered as unfortunates.

He was also a very astute captain of the West Indies. When the team fell into bad times and began losing a lot, it was Rohan who put it back on its winning ways. He was succeeded by Lloyd under whose leadership the West Indies enjoyed its longest period at the top of the game.

Rohan became a successful coach after he retired. His period of coaching in Jamaica is still remembered fondly. Many Jamaicans at

that time named their children after the great man. This included Bob Marley who had a son named Rohan.

On this occasion of his 90th birthday I wish to thank him for the pleasure and pride he provided for the cricketing world and for us in Guyana and the Caribbean.

I say Happy Birthday Great One and keep going for the century!

Govt’s Christmas Market initiative ends on high note

Dear Editor, THE Government of Guyana’s Christmas Market has ended, and it did so with a sense of success. A public programme with potential to be hampered by weather, traffic, or just organisational problems, Guyana’s Christmas Market was instead a model example of the genre.

It delivered a warm, festive atmosphere where Guyanese could go shopping, artisans could get attention and families could enjoy being out together.

Christmas is an expensive season for most families, not least because

so many goods in Guyana are imported. Guyanese consumers can be expected to shop more locally when presented with convenient, attractive alternatives—and in many ways, this market provided just that.

By supporting artisans and entrepreneurs to access high-volume traffic with their products, it also provided sellers an opportunity to improve their businesses that could translate into future success, making the market a cost-effective, low-risk investment in the economy.

Christmas in Guyana is also a time of cultural pride and, while food,

craft, music, and other aspects of the market are all year-round activities for many Guyanese, a festive public marketplace was also a means to recognise and participate in the cultural aspects of the season.

Guyana’s Christmas market, as a free and family-friendly activity, was one that could be enjoyed across economic and social classes, and where Guyanese culture was not only expressed in consumption, but in production.

A seasonal market’s success should be determined not just by how many people attend, but

by how much it allowed its participants to do.

The current edition’s organisers are to be congratulated, and an opportunity exists for the government to build on this year’s event to make

Guyana’s Christmas market an even more important and impactful event in the coming years.

Through proper logistics, organisation, and support, the mar-

ket can be a yearly opportunity to help the small Guyanese business, local shoppers and the broader national culture.

Obligation: Stabroek News and Kaieteur News

THE English philosopher, John Locke, paid special attention to the concept of obligation. It forms an important part of his philosophy.

Obligation forms a huge part of the nature of civilisation. It is the binding wire that holds civilisation together. Locke believed that each human has an obligation to the preservation of mankind.

Obligation is never nuanced; it is all pervasive and general. Obligation inheres in natural law. In every sphere of life obligation should reign. Once obligation is absent or derecognised then moral foundations on which civilisation rests are jeopardised.

Whether it is a supermarket and its customers, government and its subjects, parents and their kids, professionals and their clients, employers and their employees, the media and their watchers and

readers, the police and the citizens, obligation must underpin all relationships.

I have never seen in the world of the media in any country, two newspapers in Guyana –Kaieteur News (KN) and Stabroek News (SN) – where even at an elementary level, there is no obligation to readers.

Two names come to mind. Vishnu Bisram and GHK Lall. Leonard Craig did a devastating dismissal of GHK Lall in last Monday’s Chronicle, a route I would have avoided because 10 years ago, I detected the psychological fulcrums of Lall.

It was clear that Lall was a nobody in the US and when he came home, he wanted to be someone.

The method he used was publicity intoxication. He simply craved publicity and he found it by latching on to firstly, the Stabroek News then the Kaieteur News. More on Craig’s political erasure of Lall be-

low. Let’s look at Bisram.

Writing in the letter pages of Monday’s edition KN, Bisram once more stated he has multiple doctorates and multiple masters. I quote him: “I have multiple doctorates and several MAs.” In his Monday letter, Mr. Bisram did not state a number. Elsewhere, he mentioned six doctorates and six Masters. No one in the world has six doctorates and six masters.

But why the KN and SN do not feel that they have an obligation to ask Mr. Bisram for a description of these 12 higher degrees. If he has them, then the newspapers have an obligation to their readers who do not believe Bisram.

A request from Mr. Bisram to state qualifications and universities they came from, publications and institutions that he worked at is obligatory.

Once that is done, it

puts the matter to rest. I stress that in any other part of the world, if Mr. Bisram was a frequent letter-writer to newspapers and he boasts about having 12 higher degrees and that disclosure generated controversy, the newspaper would have made a request of Bisram. It simply boggles the mind that KN and SN do not want to ask Bisram for an elaboration which they owe it to their readers to do.

Now for Lall. People have told me, credible people with more experience and education than GHK Lall, that they cannot get their letters in the SN. Former President, Donald Ramotar, said to me last week these words: “Freddie, I know you don’t like Kaieteur News but you can get your letters published there more than Stabroek News.” Put an interpretation to what these words mean.

So GHK Lall publish-

es a daily letter in SN, but there isn’t an editorial note about Lall’s refusal to offer an explanation as to why his former boss, then Minister, Raphael Trotman, when Lall was head of the Gold Board, glaringly contradicted him over Lall’s statement on Azruddin Mohamed and his father.

Lall said during his time as chairman of the Gold Board, the name of the Mohameds never came up in documents sent by the Americans to the Gold Board. Trotman said the Mohameds were named.

Even if Lall does not see the need to display obligation to his readers, SN has an obligation to its readers because it carries Lall’s verbal rampaging every day. These two newspapers are the lead critics of the Guyana Government. They rant all the time about the need for the government to show obligation to the citizenry. The

SN wrote about that very subject of obligation in its editorial Monday last.

Yet these newspapers have displayed barefaced arrogance in not showing obligation to their readers who patronise them and the Guyanese people in general. If you know the management of these two newspapers, the way I do, you will be disgusted at how they see their obligation – They dismiss it.

They do not for one second feel that they have the obligation to explain controversies their newspapers are involved in.

Yet these people want us to accept their criticism of the Guyana Government.

Linden miner remanded on murder charge over Issano killing A 27-year-old gold miner from Linden has been remanded to prison for the fatal shooting of Samuel Marciano, a 22-year-old miner of One Mile, Wismar, Linden.

Mike Caesar, also known as “Lil Man” or “Spanish Man,” of Blue Berry Hill, Wismar, appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge of murder was read to him.

He was not required to enter a plea.

Caesar was remanded to prison until February 5, 2026.

The charge arises from the alleged murder of Marciano, which occurred on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 14 Miles Landing, Issano, Middle Mazaruni River.

According to a police press release, ranks apprehended the suspect and subsequently searched a motor vehicle he was us-

During that search, police discovered “one 9mm Taurus pistol along with eleven (11) live 9mm rounds,” which were concealed in the driver’s side door. The firearm and ammunition were processed and lodged as part of the investigation.

According to information from the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development’s Facebook page, many of the businesses operating in the market have been established for over 50 years, with ownership and traditions passed down from generation

to generation.

The visit reflected the warm and festive atmosphere of the Christmas season, as the market continues to offer a wide range of goods and services, including clothing, restaurants, footwear, groceries, hardware, and jewellery, across

both single-level stalls and two-storey establishments.

Stabroek Market, the ministry said, remains a vital hub of commerce and community and continues to play an important role in Guyana’s cultural and economic landscape.

NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon has described Guyana as the new frontier as he talk-

“Guyana now is the new frontier because of the oil discovery, so the demand is so high for housing and international standards,” he said.

He was speaking specifically of recently joining TAJ DIAMOND as an investor and homeowner in the planned luxury residential community, which was announced in November.

He noted that when he saw what the group was doing in Guyana, he was very inspired to join forces.

He indicated, “With the team that I have right now, we have a big vision and also the expertise to do more affordable housing for the local [sic] and also the international [sic] that’s [sic] coming in.”

Olajuwon went on to add that Guyana’s infrastructure is in its boom-

ing stage, and this further led to his decision.

In November, an announcement was made by U.S.-based Coastal Rim Properties, the developer behind TAJ DIAMOND, G u y a n a ’s f i r s t m a s ter-planned luxury residential community, that the NBA Hall of Famer would join forces as an investor.

Olajuwon, had long been active in real estate markets across Houston and internationally, recently visited Guyana several times to explore opportunities in both real estate and the oil and gas sector.

He purchased two luxury residences within the TAJ DIAMOND community and signalled his interest in pursuing additional joint ventures with the developer, both locally and internationally.

New water systems transform life in Baramita

THE residents of Baramita celebrated a major milestone with the commissioning of two new water systems.

Home to more than 600 residents, the community nestled in Region One and accessible only by plane or the rugged trail from Matthew’s Ridge or Port Kaituma, has long struggled with the challenges of its remote location in the Matarkai Sub-Region.

The new water systems now mark a turning point, ending years of dependence on creeks and the long walks to distant standpipes for daily water needs.

The first site, commissioned on Monday at Barama, now provides clean water to over 400 people.

Water from the newly-drilled well, which came with a price tag of $23 million, is distributed through a 2.3km network, powered by an eco-friendly photovoltaic pumping system.

The project was made possible through a partnership between GWI and the Baramita Village Council, reflecting the community’s collaborative spirit.

The second well, situated at Return within the village of Baramita, is fully operational and supplies water directly to more than 40 households. Costing $21 million, it is a collaboration between GWI and the Village Council.

The new facilities were officially commissioned on Monday in a ceremony attended by Parliamentary Secretary, Thandi McAllister, M.P.; Director General of MPUA, Alfonso DeArmas; and GWI’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaik Baksh.

Residents gathered to celebrate their first-ever access to potable water at home, openly expressing gratitude for the Government of Guyana’s unwavering efforts to uplift their quality of life.

McAllister emphasised

that these new wells stand as a powerful testament to President Ali’s pledge to drive development across Guyana. She reminded those present that just five years ago, Baramita had no wells.

Now, with over 90% of households benefitting from direct service, the community’s progress is undeniable.

DeArmas echoed the same sentiments, noting that true development extends beyond the grand structures of Georgetown and must reach into the hinterland.

“The elders of the community, the children and families no longer have to walk far distances to access water.

Water scarcity is something of the past for residents here in Baramita,” he stated.

Baksh commended the government’s investment and President Ali’s visionary approach to transforming the water sector. He revealed that by the end of 2026, the target is 100% access to treated water along the coast.

Baksh added that GWI’s strategic plan includes a programme to extend coastal water treatment to the Hinterland.

He said this will help people and enhance their quality of life. The plan is to implement this over the next five years, making the future feel attainable for Baramita.

Also present at the commissioning ceremony was the Director of Hinterland Services, Ramchand Jailall and other technical officers of GWI. The installation of water systems in Baramita proves that no community is too remote.

As clean water flows into homes for the first time, Baramita’s transformation becomes a powerful beacon for other hinterland communities, demonstrating that dedicated investment and genuine partnership can decisively turn long-held dreams into reality. (DPI)

Deputy Commissioner Budhram praises crime reduction, professional standards at Region Three police awards ceremony

THE Guyana Police Force’s Regional Division Three recorded a 25.4 per cent reduction in serious crimes for 2025, a development Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Ravindradat Budhram described as a notable achievement amid rapid growth and expanding infrastructure in the region.

Deputy Commissioner Budhram made the disclosure while addressing the division’s Annual Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, held on Tuesday, December 23, at the Diamond Tip Entertainment Venue in Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara.

The event recognised the performances and service of officers and staff within the division over the past year.

In his remarks, Budhram commended the division’s leadership and ranks for maintaining discipline and operational effectiveness despite increased population movement, new road networks and improved connectivity brought about by recent infrastructural projects. He said these developments have heightened policing demands, making consistent enforcement and coordination essential.

“The reduction in serious crime reflects sustained policing efforts, improved supervision and stronger operational coordination across the division,” Budhram said, while noting that declines were also recorded in other crime categories.

He emphasised that the expansion of major roadways and bridges has improved access throughout the region, but has also required a more strategic and responsive policing approach to ensure public safety.

He encouraged ranks to pursue academic and professional advancement through available programmes, including CXC studies, tertiary education and scholarship opportunities, while maintaining discipline and job performance.

He noted that once programmes are accredited and approved, the force will continue to support officers in balancing education with their professional responsibilities.

Minister Mustapha hands over new houses to Bloomfield residents

MINISTER of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday, handed over two newly-constructed houses to Savitri Motielall and Kamal Devi Bissessar of Bloomfield Village, Corentyne, bringing renewed comfort, safety and stability to their families.

The housing handover done under President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s Men on Mission (MOM) initiative formed part of the government’s continued efforts to improve the living conditions of vulnerable citizens and uplift communities across the region. The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support, noting that the new houses will provide them with a renewed sense of security and dignity.

Motielall, who was born with a disability, resides alone, while Bissessar resides with her niece and her husband, four children and a son-in-law.

If you want to hold national office or you want to hold public office then we should be truthful, we should not use an area to get famous.”

Residents gathered noted that all of the streets in the community have been upgraded as they spoke highly of Minister Mustapha. Most of them said they have a personal relationship with him.

During the visit, Minister Mustapha also hosted a toy distribution exercise for children of the Whim/Bloomfield area, ensuring smiles and joy for the younger residents. Additionally, hampers were distributed to senior citizens, not only offering assistance but spreading holiday cheer and goodwill throughout the community.

The outreach exercise underscored the govern-

ment’s commitment to social development and community care, particularly for families, children and the elderly.

Minister Mustapha told those gathered at his house on Tuesday, that “this is just a way of telling you how important you are. You are important to us, you are important to the government.”

He added, “What we are seeing today, we are seeing a lot of changes to bring ease to your life, and you know for a fact that you have a government that is responsive to your need.”

He then outlined sections of the PPP/C government’s next five year plan which will continue to improve the livelihood of residents countrywide.

Also present at the activity were Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain, Regional Chairman Junior Basant, and Regional Vice-Chairman Wajid Saheed Khan, along with other community representatives.

Together, the officials reaffirmed their dedication to continued development and meaningful support for residents of the region.

‘Untrue, fallacious, and devoid of merit’ - Agriculture Minister flays US-sanctioned Azruddin Mohamed for ‘propaganda’; vows to take legal action

AGRICULTURE Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has rejected allegations being circulated on social media

by United States-indicted Azruddin Mohamed.

Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood

(WIN) party, has sought to imply that Minister Mustapha’s residence at Bloomfield, Berbice, was acquired through corrupt means.

The minister, however, has shot down those allegations, describing them as

false, malicious and politically motivated.

Mustapha maintains that the construction of the property was financed solely through a mortgage from Demerara Bank Limited and personal savings earned

through lawful employment.

He pointed to his more than three decades in the public service, including stints as a Member of Parliament, Regional Chairman of Region Six, and, since 2020, a minister in the People’s Pro-

gressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government.

He said his statutory declarations to the Integrity Commission were up to date, and that he could account for all assets in his possession.

“I have been up to date with my declarations with the Integrity Commission, and I wish to assure my supporters and the general public that all my assets were acquired through lawful means. I can account for every asset I own,” the minister wrote in a statement.

Mustapha also addressed separate social media attacks

by Mohamed on his son, Javed Mustapha.

He described those claims as misleading and harmful, and insisted that his son’s business activities and medical career were conducted with professionalism, transparency, and integrity.

He added that his son had previously distanced himself from Mohamed after becoming aware of what were described as unlawful and unethical practices; this is a

decision the minister believes triggered a personal vendetta.

“Mr. Mohamed’s hypocrisy is glaring, and must not be countenanced. Instead of pretending to be the guardian of [anti-corruption], he should be addressing, in public, his own corrupt practices.

Clearly, these nasty attacks on my family and me were designed to divert attention from his own corrupt practices," Mustapha said.

He added: “I am issuing this statement to inform the interested public of our innocence regarding the purported allegations made in the Facebook posts, and to clarify that his attacks on us were personal. Therefore, we will not engage in a tit for tat with him."

He stressed that the family would not engage in public exchanges over the matter, but had sought legal advice, with instructions given to attorneys to review the posts and consider appropriate action to prevent further defamatory publications.

Single mother among beneficiaries of homes at Christmas

AFTER 35 years of paying rent, this Christmas brought an extraordinary turning point for single mother Rosanna Gobin.

In a moment filled with emotion and gratitude, she received the keys to her brand-new home under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme, marking the end of a long journey and the start of a new chapter grounded in stability and hope.

“For me, receiving these keys is the best Christmas gift I have received in 35 years,” Gobin shared.

She reflected on the challenges she faced along the

way, recalling how she was once turned down by the bank but never lost faith.

Gobin added: “When you put your trust in God, anything is possible. I kept praying for a rent- and debtfree house, and today it is a reality.”

She was among 18 families from the East Bank and West Bank of Demerara who received homes through the programme, which is being implemented through a partnership between the Government of Guyana and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), earlier today.

To date, 243 of the 283 homes under the initiative

have been completed, directly improving the lives of vulnerable families.

The simple act of handing over keys, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Bishram Kuppen, noted, represents far more than bricks and mortar.

While such events may seem small, he emphasised their deeper significance.

CARICOM private sector organisations reaffirm commitment to CSME, regional integration

The following is the full text of a statement from the CPSO: “IN October 2020, the CARICOM Private Sector Organization (CPSO) became an “Associate” institution of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and has since worked with fellow private sector companies and business organisations to advance projects and representations to pursue the noble objectives of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The CPSO and fellow private sector organisations in the Region reaffirm that the CSME has delivered tangible benefits to firms and workers throughout the Region, supporting significant intra-regional trade, strengthening regional supply chains, and contributing meaningfully to foreign-exchange earnings and economic activity in Member States, including Trinidad and Tobago.

From the 1989 Declaration of Grand Anse which initiated the process towards

the CSME, to the signing of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas in 2001, which established the CSME and the launch of the CSME in 2006, the vision of CARICOM leaders to create a common market which would provide greater economies of scale to regional business and more opportunities for CARICOM citizens to thrive remains a relevant aspiration for our Countries.

The CARICOM private sector places great value on the benefits derived both

from intra-CARICOM trade and from the Community’s strong trading relationships beyond the Region, including with the United States - the largest collective external trading partner for CARICOM. From a private-sector standpoint, these relationships are not in competition, they are complementary, reinforcing economic resilience and diversification.

At a time of global economic uncertainty, the private sector depends on con-

fidence, stability, and constructive engagement among Member States. In these times, the phrase “stronger together" is particularly relevant.

CARICOM continues to serve as the forum for leaders, governments, institutions and the people of our community to join hands and stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity to transform vulnerabilities into assets by building resilience and strategically integrating into the global economy.

We are joined by private sector organisations from across the Region in recognising that we all have a role to play in improving the CSME such that it may work better for the benefits of all Member States and their citizens. In a world of increasing isolation, we recognise that CARICOM and the CSME’s vision are critical for our joint sustainability.

Businessman in custody over illegal gun, ‘ammo’ found during East Coast operation

Suspected illegal firearm, ammunition recovered POLICE have recovered a suspected illegal firearm and ammunition following an intelligence-led operation at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, on Tuesday.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the operation was conducted between 12:00 hours and 13:00 hours on December 23, 2025. During the exercise, ranks observed a 33-year-old businessman of Vryheid’s Lust behaving in a suspicious manner.

Police said they approached the man, who

then discarded an object into a nearby trench. A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of a suspected 9mm pistol along with a magazine containing six live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was arrested and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station along with the suspected firearm and ammunition, which were lodged pending further investigation.

The businessman remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Santos secure win as Super-16 cup heads into quarter final stage

SANTOS again grabbed a vital victory in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super 16 Cup beating Fruta Conquerors 1-nil on Sunday at the National Training Centre.

In the overall men’s physique Anthony again came out on top.

The middle weight was won by Delrae Mclean with Orlando Dublin taking the

heavyweight class.

The men’s fitness was won by Romelton Siland with Warren George second and Kadeem Bowen third.

The men’s physique was claimed by Roley Chandler ahead of six other competitors with Yusuf Khan finishing in second place.

The new category, Fit Model was won by Siland for

the men and Savita Boodhoo for the women.

The Miss Bikini winner was Christina Ramsammy while in the Bikini Wellness Melitha Anderson took that title.

Arsenal’s Kepa sends team into Carabao semi finals (BBC) - Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero as he saved the decisive penalty from Maxence Lacroix to help Arsenal beat Crystal Palace in a shootout and progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in a game packed with late drama.

The Gunners thought they had won the match when the unfortunate Lacroix scored an own goal in the 80th minute, bundling the ball into his own net when trying to clear after an Arsenal corner.

However, Palace got a dramatic leveller in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Adam Wharton floated in a free kick, and Marc Guehi was the quickest to react to Jefferson Lerma’s knockdown to score from close range.

Declan Rice then had a chance to win the match for

Arsenal with the last kick of the game, but he could not score past the excellent Walter Benitez.

The stand-in Palace goalkeeper had been their best player throughout the match, making two excellent saves from Gabriel Jesus to keep the scores level until the latter stages.

The Palace centre-back’s night got worse when he stepped up with the score at 8-7 in a high-quality penalty shootout, and Arrizabalaga got down well to his right to push the ball away and give Arsenal the win.

The Gunners move into the last four of the competition, and will face London rivals Chelsea over two legs for a place in the final.

Arsenal analysis: Gunners through but Arteta will not be happy

Fifteen penalties were scored before Maxence Lacroix’s effort was saved to put Arsenal through

Mikel Arteta will be pleased that his side managed to get through penalties to reach the semi-finals, but the

way that his players managed the tie will have disappointed the Arsenal manager.

The Gunners were again

far from their best, and missed a host of chances before Lacroix’s late own goal.

Arsenal had a small wobble recently, with draws against Sunderland and Chelsea, and a loss to Aston Villa.

And even though they have started a new run of victories, Arsenal are not near to the levels of performance they set at the beginning of the season.

Crystal Palace analysis: A brave performance but not enough For Crystal Palace, 2025 has been one of the best years

in the history of the club.

With the FA Cup and Community Shield in the trophy cabinet, and a first European campaign underway, things are pretty good in south London.

However, there is the feeling that things could be even better if their top-class manager Oliver Glasner had more options in his squad.

The Palace boss made three changes to the side thrashed at Leeds, but the Eagles have started to falter and look tired in recent weeks, as their increased fixture schedule starts to catch-up with their relatively small squad.

However, in the main, Glasner has made them exceptionally resolute, and it was that belief that helped them equalise late on.

Palace are without injured key player Daniel Munoz, lost Chris Richards to what looked like a serious injury during the game, and have striker Jean-Philippe Mateta carrying an injury, but Glasner is still managing to keep his side competitive in multiple competitions.

The Eagles almost forced their way through to the last four, but, although disappointed, they should be pleased with the fight they showed against a top team.

England to investigate reports of ‘excessive drinking’ during ashes series

(BBC) - England will investigate reports of players drinking excessively during a break from the Ashes series in the beach town of Noosa.

The England squad spent four nights on the Queensland coast between the second and third Test.

Several media outlets, including the BBC, reported that some players were drinking for a significant portion of their time in Noosa, as well as on two previous days in Brisbane, the venue for the second Test.

A video was shared on social media on Tuesday which appeared to show England opener Ben Duckett drunk.

Although England produced an improved performance in the third Test in Adelaide, Australia won to take an unassailable 3-0 lead and retain the Ashes in only 11 days of cricket.

“We’ll be looking into seeing what the facts are as opposed to the things that have been embellished or elaborated on,” England director of cricket Rob Key told BBC Sport.

“Headlines can be misleading at times, saying it’s a stag do and stuff like that.

“Stories of players drinking six days solid - that’s unacceptable.”

In the video, which has not been verified by BBC Sport, Duckett is asked if he knows how to get home. He

says “no” and later swears.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said it is “establishing the facts” around the video and that it has “high expectations” around player behaviour.

Duckett was dropped from the England Lions squad during a tour of Australia in 2017-18 after pouring a drink over England bowler James Anderson.

The break in Noosa was arranged before the tour and went ahead despite England falling 2-0 behind after two Tests.

While the entire squad were present in Noosa, former Kent and England batter Key was in another part of Queensland.

Players were told to expect media attention and were captured by TV cameras and photographers.

That included shots of some players drinking at an outside table of a bar on the main high street in the town.

“When you see a picture of five or six guys sitting down for lunch, a couple of them having drinks, you need to see what’s going on with that,” said Key. “If it’s true that it became a stag do and people are out drinking all the time excessively, that’s not acceptable.

“I don’t agree with a drinking culture. I don’t like a drinking culture.”

Former Australia batter and head coach Darren Lehmann told Australian radio

station ABC he spent time with some England players in Noosa.

“They were actually really well behaved. They mixed with the locals and had a good time,” he said.

“The reports of them on a stag do are just wrong. I will defend them there.

“They played golf, swam on the beach and played soccer with the locals - they were liked by the locals.

“I will defend them a little bit because it is a little bit out of order. I didn’t see a stag do. I saw people just relaxing and enjoying Noosa for what it is.”

Duffy’s heroics against WI help him smash 40-year record

CMC – New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy grabbed a sensational 23 wickets in the just concluded three-Test series against West Indies to become his country’s highest-ever wicket taker in a calendar year.

The 31-year-old pacer, who was named Player-ofthe-Series, had only played in one Test match prior to the series against West Indies, but grabbed three five-wicket hauls to end the year with 81 wickets across all formats.

He broke the previous record of 79 wickets set by Richard Hadlee in 1985.

Jacob Duffy was outstanding in the Test series

against West Indies, snaring 23 wickets.

Duffy’s 23 wickets at an average of 15.43, also set a new New Zealand record for most wickets in a single home Test series, surpassing Trent Boult’s 20 wickets which he took in 2013, also against the West Indies.

During the series, Duffy emerged as New Zealand’s pace spearhead amid an injury-hit bowling attack that saw the home side lose senior quicks Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke to injuries.

His impressive performance helped New Zealand clinch the Test series 2-0, to go along with their 3-1 victo-

ry in the T20I series and 3-0 win in the ODIs. “I’m just enjoying my career, I don’t know. I don’t look at things too holistically I guess,” Duffy said after the series-clinching win.

“It has been an awesome ride; it’s been testing with all the bowlers going down and obviously the workload is pretty high.

“But I guess the fact that Tommy [Tom Latham] keeps asking me to bowl the ball, I’d like to view that as a bit of a privilege.

KFC Goodwill international football competition deemed a success

AFTER the dust has settled, the Petra Organisation said the sixth edition of their year-end football tournament, the KFC Goodwill International Competition was a resounding success.

Chase Academic Foundation on Sunday captured the second KFC Goodwill title in a row.

Director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, says that their goal is to provide the premier schools football competition for the region.

“From an organisational standpoint, all the logistics involved, we tried out[sic] best, we had minimum situation but based on what we know happens in the Caribbean, the teams from Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname these guys really stepped up in a manner that suggests improvement from year to year,” Mendonca added.

While acknowledging the shortcomings of the pitch, Mendonca added that the Ministry of Education ground has been the bedrock of their competitions.

According to the Petra Co-Director, “While a lot of people might question the facility, this same facility that provided a platform for 100 percent of these youngsters, local players who represent this country at U15 to U20 levels, developed right here; we have seen what we have done from under 11 through to under 18. That in itself is very pleasing for us.”

Wilson said they made a decision to change the mode of the scholarship. “[In] this year which will be the sixth edition and our second, the idea is that we want to raise the level, so I have confirmed with a club in Brazil, which is a second-division club in Brazil and they have offered me, one to three months for the MVP player, which is why I have changed from a developmental club

into playing in a league. I am going straight into a professional club, which means that I’m putting a player into a completely professional setting and seeing where that player measures up against the highest standard of football,” he said.

He says this gives the player the opportunity to be signed by a Brazilian club, but it is not only about football, adding, “I want to

emphasise that we have much focus on education, so the player that [sic] is usually the MVP, I don’t look at the player that has the highest goal tally, football is a game you can be on a good team and be successful.

What I want is [sic] players that [sic] come from supportive family backgrounds, players whose emphasis is on education make it easy when transitioning into professionals setting, because I’m not risking any incidents while they are abroad. I want to sell Guyana or Trinidad or Jamaica or any Caribbean athlete that [sic] goes into the south American league as being a completely professional player that [sic] is willing to learn.”

The competition this year fielded three local teams in Chase’s Academic Foundation, West Ruimveldt and Annai along with teams from Trinidad, Jamaica, Suriname and new additions from The Bahamas and Brazil.

The winning school team collected 3000 US dollars.
