A Sense of Place, a Sense of Time by John Brinckerhoff Jackson Summary by Gustav Kjær Vad Nielsen Through examples from Jacksons own experience of the American monotomy and ‘the grid’ used in urban planning he discusses two opposite views on what is essentially considered ‘a sense of place’. Jackson states that he believes that a sense of space is something human create in the course of time as a result of habit or custom and in addition he also claims that this is the believe of the average American. Disagreeing with him are those of the believe that a sense of places ‘comes from our response to features which are already there’(p151). A general attention attached to the notion of time should be emphasized in the construction of places as time also is the parameter separating public spheres from private.
