ANNUAL REPORT 2024

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Greetings! In 2024, I began my second term as the Chair of the Department of Global Health. I remain amazed by the high-impact work produced by our faculty, students, and staff. I’d like to share the significant developments and achievements of our vibrant department.
I proudly announce that 2024 marked an exciting year of expansion and innovation for our department. We welcomed three outstanding new full-time faculty members —Dr. Adam Koon, Dr. Carlos Mendes de Leon, and Dr. John Quattrochi—whose diverse expertise significantly enhances our academic and research capabilities. Dr. Koon investigates the complex interplay of politics in global health, Dr. Mendes de Leon brings extensive experience in social epidemiology focusing on health changes in late life, and Dr. Quattrochi contributes valuable insights into global health and sustainable development, with a particular focus on populations affected by fragility and conflict.
We also welcomed Grace Singer as our new Internship Abroad Coordinator, continuing to build our experiential learning program. Under the direction of Dr. Margaret Baker, our global health practice and research course placed ten students with five organizations across the globe, including

new pilot opportunities through collaborations with the Georgetown University Center for Global Health Practice and Impact in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and West Virginia Health Right in Charleston. Lisa Waldo, who has contributed to the program, continued to advise and also teamed up with talented producer and Georgetown Alumni Mr. Timothy Casey to build our department’s website and social media, and documented department achievements with many hours of video footage for our department’s outreach. Our students and alumni continue to make us proud. The Class of 2024 included 25 outstanding bachelor's degree recipients who have gone on to prestigious graduate programs and impactful careers.

Notable student achievements include Shreyaa Venkat being selected as the 2024 Tropaia Speaker, Alaina Anderson receiving the Dean's Medal, and Shreya Arora winning the Department of Global Health's Outstanding Student Award. Our alumni continue to excel in their respective fields, with achievements including Alexandra Scott receiving a Baratta Prize for Global Impact and Aeysha Chaudhry earning her PhD in Community Health Sciences.
The Department of Global Health continues to be home to a dynamic community of scholars engaged in cutting-edge research and practice. Our faculty, staff, and students demonstrate unwavering dedication to addressing health-related issues in a global context. In 2024, our department's research portfolio expanded significantly with grants from prestigious organizations, including the RAND Corporation, World Health Organization, Open Society Foundations, UNAIDS, the Ford Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and many others, supporting critical work in areas such as health inequality, worker rights, climate change impacts on health, and aging populations worldwide. In total, our faculty secured 32 grants with total funding of nearly $8,550, 000 demonstrating the strength and relevance of our research agenda.
Our faculty's scholarly contributions have been equally impressive. This year, 47 journal articles, policy papers, and book chapters were published, including numerous high-impact publications in leading journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, and Health Affairs, as well as RAND Research Reports that have made significant contributions to public policies.
The department's faculty have also demonstrated exceptional commitment to service in 2024, participating in numerous committees and advisory roles at Georgetown and beyond. Faculty members served on university committees including the Executive Faculty, Main Campus Core Curriculum Committee, Academic Dispute Committee, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism initiatives, the Faculty Senate, and various departmental and program committees. Externally, our faculty contributed as editorial board members for prestigious journals, reviewers for NIH panels, technical advisors to the Global Fund, World Health Organization, and World Bank, and members of international working groups addressing critical global health challenges.
Our partnership with the Global Health Instituter has flourished through two key collaborative efforts this year. The department co-hosted with GHI and other partners on an impactful Global Public Health Seminar Series featuring faculty research from both our department and across the university. The Student Fellows Program provided vital funding for eight Global Health undergraduate and graduate students to conduct meaningful research with faculty mentors throughout campus. These student-faculty collaborations spanned diverse and critical topics, including infectious disease interventions in conflict settings, mental health in Senegal, laboratory biosecurity, long COVID in Kenya, Chinese health aid impact in Africa, and maternal health in Zanzibar, demonstrating the breadth and significance of our joint commitment to global health education and research.
Our global reach extended through faculty research trips and conference presentations in Geneva, Doha, Cape Town, Shanghai, Nairobi, Freetown, and many other cities worldwide. These international engagements have strengthened our global partnerships and enhanced Georgetown's reputation as a leader in global health education and research. These contributions continue to advance our understanding of complex health challenges faced by communities around the world.
As we conclude this annual report, I would like to express my gratitude to each member of our department for their unwavering dedication and hard work. It is through our collective efforts that we continue to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the field of global health.
I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you for your continued support, and here's to another successful year of advancing global health and promoting social justice and health equity.
Warm regards,
