ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Carole Hemmelgarn Program Director
This past year has seen exciting change for the Executive Master’s in Clinical Quality, Safety and Leadership (EM-CQSL). The program started in Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) in 2017, and recently moved to the School of Health in July of 2024. Our program aligns with the mission, vision and values of the School of Health. Through this alignment, faculty, students and alumni can flourish in an academic community, fostering an environment of collaboration, learning, and personal and professional growth.
This report highlights the achievements of our students, alums, and faculty.
Here are a few I want to call out:
• In 2024 we proudly graduated 18 master’s and 6 certificate students that are now part of our growing alumni community.
• We added three faculty members this year: Chris Bonk, MSN, RN, CNL, Kelly Haynie, DHA, MPA, FACHE, and Barb Pelletreau, RN, MPH. They bring diverse experience in human factors, healthcare leadership and operational management, patient safety, communication after harm events, and High Reliability Organizations (HRO’s).
• Our faculty and alumni continue to publish and present nationally and internationally sharing their knowledge to improve patient safety and quality.
• On the promotion side, Raj Ratwani become a full Professor and Jackie Stark was promoted to Associate Director of Graduate Studies.
• The EM-CQSL program is part of the Georgetown University and MedStar Health strategic partnership to collaborate on premier educational opportunities.
We are excited to be part of the School of Health and looking forward to our first full academic year.
Gratefully,
Carole

What did you learn in the onsite that you will apply in your professional career?
“Skills to positively influence others and to have courageous conversations, but most importantly I learned that I am capable to make change occur.”
What did you enjoy most about the onsite?
“Meeting everyone and being able to learn the topics among friends. I enjoyed the presence of the two coaches, they were very helpful and professional.”
• How I show up in my career
• how to influence others by connecting with what already motivates them
• changing the language we use
• how to give feedback and communicate with patients and families
• changing our perspectives and the power of the stories we tell
“The time spent on emotions, introspection and mindfulness were invaluable to me. I so appreciate the cohort for being so open that we can learn from each other. This has been a life changing journey for me being in this class.”
What did you enjoy most about the onsite?
“Everything. It was absolutely wonderful. I have never attended a live course over 3 days in which I have not lost attention or focus until this one. I really enjoyed all the simulations and the active engagement of everyone involved. The face-to-face interactions with the coaches, instructors and my fellow students was very rewarding. We have been working with our fellow students for almost a year so it was wonderful to get to know them better. The instructors were so knowledgeable and so kind demonstrating what great leadership is all about. I also really enjoyed how everyone was able to be present in the learning without the distractions of phones or computers. It made a big difference in my ability to attend. The care and attention put into making the onsite is evident.”
What did you learn in the onsite that you will apply in your professional career?
“Pretty much every aspect of the onsite I will be able to apply in my career. The breadth of topics covered was large but they all wove together which was extremely helpful. I realized how far I have come in my knowledge of many topics but at the same time how far I still have to go.”
“Active listening, self-reflection, setting and establishing a safe space, feedback from presentations was very motivating, how to communicate with patients and support persons.”
